- 0:00Podcasthero.com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:05podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm our host, Andrew McGivern, and let's jump into today's
- 0:11quote from Viktor Frankel, an Austrian psychiatrist and
- 0:15Holocaust survivor who wrote the profound book Man's Search for
- 0:19Meaning. Frankel survived four years in
- 0:21Nazi concentration camps, including Oswich, where he lost
- 0:26his parents, brother and pregnant wife from that
- 0:31unimaginable suffering. He gave us this wisdom.
- 0:35When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are
- 0:38challenged to change ourselves. Think about what Frankel is
- 0:43saying here. When you can't change the
- 0:45situation, you change yourself. Most of us spend enormous energy
- 0:50trying to change things we can't control.
- 0:53The economy, other people, the past circumstances that are
- 0:58beyond our reach and we exhaust ourselves fighting battles we
- 1:02can't win and at the very least end up stressed and full of
- 1:08anxiety. Frankel learned in the most
- 1:11extreme circumstances imaginable that when the external situation
- 1:15is unchangeable, you have one option left.
- 1:19Transform yourself. Not accept defeat.
- 1:24Not give up. Transform.
- 1:27You can't change that you lost your job, but you can change how
- 1:31you respond to it. You can become more resilient,
- 1:34more resourceful, and more adaptable.
- 1:37You can't change that someone hurt you, but you can change
- 1:40yourself into someone who doesn't carry that hurt forever.
- 1:44You can't change the obstacle that's in your path, but you can
- 1:49change yourself into someone capable of navigating around it,
- 1:52climbing over it, or breaking through it.
- 1:56This isn't about positive thinking or pretending
- 1:59everything's fine. Frankel watched people die
- 2:01around him. He knew the suffering was real,
- 2:05but he also knew that the last freedom no one could take from
- 2:08him was the freedom to choose who he became in response to
- 2:13what happens. So here's the question.
- 2:16What unchangeable situation are you fighting right now?
- 2:20And what if instead of trying to change it, you focused on
- 2:24changing yourself? Because that's the one thing you
- 2:27always have control over, not the obstacle.
- 2:31You, you can't change everything, but you can change
- 2:35how you respond to everything. That's it for today.
- 2:39I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 2:44tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 2:49with another daily quote.
