- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:28Our current series is Divine Disappointments, Facing Pain
- 0:32and Sorrow at Work.
- 0:34And today we have a special guest with
- 0:36us all the way from Grand Rapids, Michigan,
- 0:39Ben Crocker.
- 0:40Thank you for joining us.
- 0:42Thank you for the opportunity.
- 0:43I'm excited to be here.
- 0:45So I know Ben for a couple different
- 0:46reasons.
- 0:47We're in the same spiritual direction training course
- 0:50right now, which is why he came in
- 0:52from out of town.
- 0:53But I like to think he came in
- 0:54out of town just so we could do
- 0:55this podcast episode.
- 0:56I did come a day early and adjusted
- 0:58my work schedule to be here.
- 1:00It's that important.
- 1:01Praise the Lord.
- 1:02And it's great to be in the same
- 1:04physical three-dimensional space while we record this.
- 1:08And for listeners, Ben, in addition to being
- 1:11a spiritual director in training, he works in
- 1:14the managed IT space.
- 1:15He's a bit of a technophile.
- 1:17He loves using technology to serve other people.
- 1:20He recently was recovering from a jaw surgery
- 1:22and sort of accidentally fell into creating this
- 1:25app.
- 1:27Scenejournal.app is where you can go to
- 1:29check out the Scene app.
- 1:31So an accidental app developer, but the app
- 1:34uses AI to create journaling prompts to help
- 1:37people reflect on their daily experience and already
- 1:40has several users and starting to take off.
- 1:43So I love all the kind of nooks
- 1:45and crannies of what Ben gets into as
- 1:48a creative and as a technologist.
- 1:50But he also wants to share a little
- 1:52bit about his story, having kind of shifted
- 1:55from a different vision of his career in
- 1:57an earlier stage.
- 1:58So excited for that, for our series about
- 2:01divine disappointments.
- 2:03So to start out, Ben, just as a
- 2:06get-to-know-you question, what helps you
- 2:08find God at work?
- 2:09What helps you welcome God's presence on a
- 2:10normal workday?
- 2:13I tend to operate very strongly by the
- 2:18clock.
- 2:19I'm fascinated by shifting my work schedule in
- 2:23order to take advantage of early mornings, things
- 2:26like that.
- 2:28And so that clockwork idea really plays into
- 2:33how I experience God at work as well.
- 2:36There's nothing better than just having a quiet
- 2:40moment in the morning before eight o'clock.
- 2:44I'm at my computer looking at the tasks
- 2:47for the day, but also just sitting with
- 2:50this thought of, it's quiet, nobody else is
- 2:54online, not my company, and it's just me
- 2:57and God kind of looking at the day
- 2:59and evaluating where to from here.
- 3:02And just the openness that that brings is
- 3:05one way that I really connect with God
- 3:09while at work, just acknowledging Him from the
- 3:13perspective of time.
- 3:15And as I approach the end of the
- 3:17day, yes, there's the excitement to be done,
- 3:20whether it's at three or five or however
- 3:23my schedule is for the day.
- 3:25But there's also just this divine sense of,
- 3:29God was with me in this workday, and
- 3:33it's helpful for me to have those benchmarks
- 3:37at the start of the day, in the
- 3:40middle of the day, and as the day
- 3:42ends, just to acknowledge that, yes, this work
- 3:46I'm doing is super nerdy, but it also
- 3:50helps me to think about the people that
- 3:52I've interacted with throughout the day, and also
- 3:55the moments that I saw God throughout the
- 3:58day.
- 3:59I love that sense of structuring time, not
- 4:01just for productivity, but also for presence.
- 4:04Being aware of God's presence, being aware of
- 4:07the people you were present to and that
- 4:09were present to you, and kind of weaving
- 4:12that work and that reflection and presence together.
- 4:15That's really beautiful.
- 4:17Yeah, it's been a very meaningful shift for
- 4:20me out of just looking at my productivity
- 4:25and really holding that presence and seeing that
- 4:30as just as important, if not more important,
- 4:35than the productivity piece.
- 4:37Yeah, yeah.
- 4:39So this series that we're doing is Divine
- 4:41Disappointments, and so I know you reached out
- 4:45to me when I was kind of looking
- 4:46for people to tell stories, because you've experienced
- 4:48some disappointment in your life.
- 4:51When we think about disappointments, we think about
- 4:53expectations.
- 4:54So when you think about the front end
- 4:56of your career, your first dream of what
- 4:59your career and your vocation would be like,
- 5:01what were those expectations that you had at
- 5:03that time?
- 5:05The expectations for my career, for a number
- 5:10of reasons, I didn't feel like I could
- 5:14actually have them for myself.
- 5:16I felt like that was something that would
- 5:19be sourced from somewhere else.
- 5:23It was almost as if I had this
- 5:26mentality from a young age that my vocation,
- 5:30my calling, my career is something that chooses
- 5:34me.
- 5:35I don't choose it.
- 5:37And that was the mentality that I started
- 5:41college and even my career with, was one
- 5:45of not one of choice, like I don't
- 5:49have a choice in this.
- 5:52I've always felt compelled to study youth ministry.
- 5:57My mentors growing up in high school and
- 6:01earlier have all encouraged me in that direction.
- 6:05So well, all these external signs are pointing
- 6:08to that, so that's what I'm going to
- 6:11go with.
- 6:11And that's the origin story of my early
- 6:16career experience.
- 6:17It was not something that I necessarily wanted
- 6:21to do.
- 6:22It was more, I felt such strong conviction
- 6:26that this is what I must do with
- 6:30my life.
- 6:31So yeah, it sounds like there was a
- 6:33lot of kind of external pressure in a
- 6:36way, a sense of this is what other
- 6:38people thought you should do.
- 6:39This is what other people saw in you.
- 6:42And you just had a sense of obligation
- 6:44to fit that mold.
- 6:47Yes.
- 6:48What was that like for you to experience
- 6:50when you were an undergrad?
- 6:51Was that something where it felt healthy?
- 6:54It felt like you could lean into it?
- 6:55Or how did that pressure affect you?
- 6:58The attention I received from my peers and
- 7:02professors was great, phenomenal.
- 7:07I came alive in a lot of ways
- 7:10with that enthusiasm and passion, but it was
- 7:17all very externally motivated and truthfully, yes, I
- 7:22was amped and excited and really living into
- 7:26this youth ministry view of myself.
- 7:31But internally, despite successes I was having early
- 7:36on, I was feeling empty.
- 7:40I was feeling dissatisfied.
- 7:42Even in college, I didn't have the vocabulary
- 7:46to name it that way quite yet.
- 7:49And so without the words to express how
- 7:52I was feeling and with the overwhelming feelings
- 7:56that were happening in my body and in
- 8:00my mind, I was in full-blown panic
- 8:04attack mode for a good portion of my
- 8:08college years because things were not in alignment
- 8:11internally versus what I was being told by
- 8:15those in my life who were important to
- 8:19me.
- 8:19So clearly there was something going on for
- 8:22you on the inside where there was distress,
- 8:26there was even literal panic sometimes, and yet
- 8:30this forward momentum of your career kind of
- 8:33continued in this trajectory.
- 8:35So fast forward, you got a job as
- 8:37a youth pastor right out of college, right?
- 8:38I did.
- 8:39I mean, it was my last class of
- 8:43my college experience.
- 8:44I had somehow managed to finish in three
- 8:48and a half years instead of four.
- 8:50And my last capstone class, one of the
- 8:53final assignments was to make a resume.
- 8:56So I created my resume and I was
- 8:59sitting in this capstone class a little bored
- 9:03and was like, you know what, I'm going
- 9:05to go online and post my resume somewhere.
- 9:08So I found the youth specialties job bank,
- 9:11put my resume up there, and within an
- 9:14hour I had heard from a pastor at
- 9:18a small church in rural Oregon of all
- 9:21places.
- 9:22And lo and behold, a few months later,
- 9:28a day after graduation, I was loading up
- 9:32my Nissan Sentra and my parents and I
- 9:34were driving across the country to Oregon to
- 9:38this church that had reached out on the
- 9:42same day that I posted my resume.
- 9:45And so again, as one who's looking to
- 9:47external forces, this must be where God wants
- 9:51me.
- 9:51It can't just be a coincidence.
- 9:53God must be at work and therefore I
- 9:56must go to Oregon because this pastor reached
- 10:00out to me and he's interested in hiring
- 10:03me.
- 10:04And so again, it was an external force
- 10:07deciding for me what my future would be.
- 10:14So that sense of kind of being carried
- 10:15along by these external forces, other people's expectations,
- 10:20carried you into this youth ministry role.
- 10:23Tell me about some good things from those
- 10:26years in youth ministry, but then also what
- 10:28was going on internally for you as those
- 10:31things were happening?
- 10:35So I served at the first church that
- 10:38I moved across the country for.
- 10:42I was there roughly three years and there
- 10:46were some pretty phenomenal things that happened in
- 10:48that span of time.
- 10:50I was able to connect with an incoming
- 10:53class of freshmen and follow them into their
- 10:56senior year.
- 10:57And one of the students who had come
- 11:00from a very rough family background, I formed
- 11:04a really tight mentoring relationship with him, which
- 11:09of course became another external thing I could
- 11:12point to and say, well, look, I'm being
- 11:14effective with this young man, so therefore I
- 11:17need to stay.
- 11:20I really saw some cool things happen, even
- 11:24though my focus was on the external.
- 11:26I did see God at work.
- 11:29And this young man who came from a
- 11:32very broken, disjointed home environment eventually found himself
- 11:39in the highest ranks of the Pentagon as
- 11:43a chaplain with access to so much data
- 11:49and so much that few civilians or even
- 11:54army personnel are privy to in the Pentagon
- 11:58of all places.
- 12:00And I just look at that as another
- 12:03confirmation almost of, okay, well, yeah, maybe there
- 12:08was something there.
- 12:09But in the background of all of that
- 12:12was this foreboding sense of disillusionment that just
- 12:18grew and grew.
- 12:21And because of the economy and where things
- 12:23were at in 2008, it was just very
- 12:28difficult for the church to afford having a
- 12:31full-time youth pastor and to make that
- 12:33a reality.
- 12:35And it came to a point where they
- 12:38were without a senior pastor.
- 12:40I didn't feel like I could fill that
- 12:42role.
- 12:43I didn't have that intrinsic motivation to pursue
- 12:46that role.
- 12:47So I instead looked for a different job.
- 12:50Ended up in a church that, honestly, I
- 12:53knew from the start wasn't really the best
- 12:56fit.
- 12:56But young family, we needed income.
- 13:00I needed a job.
- 13:02Push was coming to shove with the first
- 13:04church and the timeline that we had set.
- 13:07So I took this second job against my
- 13:10better judgment.
- 13:11And again, that was a decision made on
- 13:15external forces, not one made from a, this
- 13:21is what I feel I need to be
- 13:23doing with my life.
- 13:25Frankly, I don't think I ever stopped and
- 13:27asked that question.
- 13:29What do I want to do?
- 13:31And so I just went into the second
- 13:34church with the same mentality, looking for those
- 13:37external confirmations that I'm where I need to
- 13:40be, and they just weren't coming.
- 13:43Instead, everything was just difficult from my working
- 13:47relationship with the pastor to the issues with
- 13:50some of the students and the families that
- 13:52I was serving.
- 13:54There was nothing that I could point to
- 13:56and say, yep, this is where I need
- 13:58to be.
- 14:00And that was very disillusioning to come to
- 14:04terms with the fact that I'm on empty,
- 14:07not having an impact, and I don't know
- 14:13how in the world I got here.
- 14:17JG I love that phrase.
- 14:18I mean, I hate it for what it
- 14:20must have felt like for you, but I'm
- 14:21on empty.
- 14:22Like you've been running your ministry career on
- 14:25this certain kind of fuel, and then you
- 14:28just realize it's gone.
- 14:29I don't have that fuel anymore.
- 14:31CB It dried up.
- 14:32It was, yeah, almost overnight, it seemed like.
- 14:35And that feeling of what is there to
- 14:37fall back on at that point?
- 14:39What's secure if you don't have all of
- 14:41this external validation that you were used to
- 14:44getting?
- 14:46How did that job end?
- 14:48And then how did that lead to a
- 14:51different kind of interior experience for you?
- 14:54JG So that job ended with the pastor
- 14:59going to the board and saying, I don't
- 15:02want Ben anymore, so let's ask him to
- 15:06resign.
- 15:06And the board kind of rubber-stamped that
- 15:09decision.
- 15:10It was a very unhealthy church leadership structure,
- 15:15where if the pastor wanted something, he would
- 15:19just float that to the board, and the
- 15:21board would just kind of, without thinking, endorse
- 15:24it, and so that was that.
- 15:26Because I had a strange relationship with the
- 15:30senior pastor, that was enough to ask me
- 15:34to resign.
- 15:35And again, being on empty, that was devastating,
- 15:39because here I had given, at that point,
- 15:44four years of, well, three and a half
- 15:45years of college, and then three years at
- 15:49the first church, and now two years at
- 15:52the second church.
- 15:53We're approaching a decade of my life that
- 15:56I've given to make this dream work.
- 16:00And then I realized, I don't think this
- 16:03is really what I want.
- 16:05I don't think this is the dream.
- 16:07And so I ended up moving back to
- 16:10Michigan.
- 16:11A lot of different things happened to bring
- 16:14me to the world of sales and copy
- 16:18machines, and that was very disorienting to see.
- 16:25Something that appeared so random and so not
- 16:29what I was seeking at all, ended up
- 16:33being the thing that started to fill me
- 16:36and give me that purpose and meaning.
- 16:39I found myself selling copy machines to churches,
- 16:43and I knew how to talk church, and
- 16:46ended up actually building a pretty solid portfolio
- 16:51of churches and nonprofits in the Grand Rapids
- 16:55area.
- 16:56And that experience opened the door through connections
- 16:59that I made in those settings to where
- 17:02I am now.
- 17:03And I love it.
- 17:06I've always been a nerd by heart.
- 17:09Technology is something that fascinates me.
- 17:13I love using technology to enhance the human
- 17:18experience, to enhance even our divine connections with
- 17:24God.
- 17:26And it's just been fascinating to shift out
- 17:30of this mindset of, I have to do
- 17:34youth ministry because that's what these external forces
- 17:37are pointing me towards.
- 17:40And instead, now shifting into the tech space
- 17:44by choice.
- 17:46I'm here because I want to be here,
- 17:48because this is giving me purpose.
- 17:52And I do find God in the midst
- 17:54of my day here.
- 17:56And I love the people that I work
- 17:59with, the customers, my co-workers, the stories
- 18:04that I've been able to hear and the
- 18:07insights I've been able to share.
- 18:11It's so much more than what my early
- 18:15career offered.
- 18:18Some days I feel like I do more
- 18:19ministry now in the tech space than I
- 18:23ever did when I was trying to live
- 18:25into somebody else's dream for my career.
- 18:28Yeah.
- 18:29Yeah.
- 18:30It sounds like obviously there's a shift in
- 18:34the what of your work, but it also
- 18:37sounds like there's a shift in the why.
- 18:39Yes.
- 18:40Like there's more intrinsic motivation.
- 18:43There's more you in the work that you're
- 18:45doing than before.
- 18:47And in that sense, there's also more space
- 18:49for God to be present in your life.
- 18:52Yeah.
- 18:52It's remarkable.
- 18:54My parents had always said growing up that
- 18:57I should go into the tech space, and
- 19:00I would just kind of laugh at that.
- 19:02Like, why?
- 19:03I'm supposed to go into youth ministry, don't
- 19:05you know?
- 19:07My mom, especially, over the years has just
- 19:10been my biggest cheerleader.
- 19:12And when I made that shift into more
- 19:16tech-focused work, she, you know, the loving
- 19:20mom, I told you so.
- 19:22In a very loving and affirming way, she's
- 19:26always just been one to remind me that,
- 19:30you know, those interests and passions that I
- 19:33have are not by accident, and it's okay
- 19:36to live into those things, and to let
- 19:39those things guide and direct my career choices.
- 19:43And as I do, it's exactly as you
- 19:46said.
- 19:47God meets me there, and really cool things
- 19:50happen.
- 19:52Praise the Lord.
- 19:53Well, I wish we could keep going, but
- 19:55would you be willing to just close us
- 19:57in prayer, Ben, and maybe pray for listeners
- 20:00who might be struggling with that sense of
- 20:01other people's expectations, and might need permission for
- 20:05that interior life and that space to matter?
- 20:08Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:10Well, let's pray.
- 20:13God, in the earliest book of the Bible,
- 20:19Genesis, we encounter Hagar, the first person to
- 20:24give you a name.
- 20:25And I just cling to the truth in
- 20:28that Hagar named you the God who sees
- 20:32Elroy.
- 20:34And God, you see each of us.
- 20:36You see the unique interests and passions that
- 20:40you've instilled in us.
- 20:43You see our past, our future, and our
- 20:45present.
- 20:47You see the things that weigh us down
- 20:50and burden us.
- 20:53You see the things that give us life
- 20:55and fulfillment and peace and joy.
- 20:59God, I pray for the listeners that they
- 21:02would find comfort in being seen by you,
- 21:06and that they would also come to see
- 21:08themselves as you see them, to see the
- 21:12uniqueness in each of them.
- 21:16God, I pray against any external force that
- 21:19would try to supersede that view.
- 21:23I pray that the listeners would have a
- 21:27proper view of themselves and of you, and
- 21:32that they would truly open themselves up to
- 21:36the big questions of, where are you, God?
- 21:41And how can I meet you there?
- 21:43Thank you for being the God who sees
- 21:45each one of us in our hurting, as
- 21:49Hagar was hurting in the desert.
- 21:52And you see us in our joy, and
- 21:55you see us in all of the moments.
- 21:58So I pray that you would see us
- 22:01in our work, and that we would also
- 22:04see you in our work.
- 22:07And it's in Christ's name we pray all
- 22:09of this.
- 22:13Thanks for listening.
