- 3:06now. You should be coming home on leave pretty soon. I'll bell.
- 3:09We're glad to see him. I'll bet you will. Has Has this man
- 3:15done this sort of thing to many other people? I've had several reports in
- 3:19the last week or so. It sounds like a pair of them are working
- 3:22it together. Pretty mean thing to do, taking advantage of the situation like
- 3:27that, isn't it? Sure is? Missus Palmery I have your attention.
- 3:30Please you people out there on the other side of the wire in the audience
- 3:32room, may I have your attention? Please? Thank you. My name
- 3:36is Conker Sergeant Pete Cotger. I'll explain the lineup to you. Each of
- 3:39the suspects you will see will be numbered. I'll call up a number their
- 3:43name in charge. You have many questions or identifications, please remember the number
- 3:46of sign of the prisoners. I call his name at the end of each
- 3:49line. When I ask for questions or identifications, call out the number.
- 3:52If you're sure. You're not too sure of the suspect, can him help
- 3:54the officers who took your name and assist you. They're seated among them.
- 3:58Please be prompt with your questions identifications. When the prisoners leave here, the
- 4:01scenter of the washroom and dress back into their jail clothes. Makes it quite
- 4:04difficult to bring them back after they leave. You. Now the questions I
- 4:08asked these suspects, and merely to get a natural tone of voice, so
- 4:11they're not paying too much attention to their answers as they often lie. All
- 4:15right, bring on the line, okay, keep it moving, boys,
- 4:18right over here to the end of the stage. Now turn and face the
- 4:23screen. Answer your sides. Number ten, Get your hands out of your
- 4:26pockets. When I call out your names, step over to the circle in
- 4:29the middle of the stage. Answer my questions in a good loud voice so
- 4:31the people out there can hear you. Okay, Number one, Ambrose,
- 4:35Davy Grand theft merchandise. Where do you live right after California? Your address
- 4:43is the last place you're slept. You've heard that ever since you were booked
- 4:45in all of you. Your address is the last place you slept. Okay,
- 4:48let's have your address, Ambro Well, I don't know. It's just
- 4:53place on third Street. I don't know what the number is. What are
- 4:57you doing in town? I I don't know. Are you're working? No,
- 5:02you're looking forward? Oh I've been not particular? Allay? What kind
- 5:08of work do you do? Ambrose? Wow, I don't know. I
- 5:12don't know anybody. You don't see anybody that I know. It's just the
- 5:16first line, number three, more, Oh yeah, number seven and number
- 5:21ten Frederick Popish and Joseph Wilsman. Huh, Well, I don't know.
- 5:28I mean I didn't know what was their name. You all live at the
- 5:31place on third Street. Don't you Ambrose. Yeah, I got the same
- 5:33rule. Sleep in the same bed, matter of fact. But you don't
- 5:38know. We're always sleeping. He had time to get a clean Maybe we
- 5:43can fix that up for all of the Ambros. I'm moving down. Yes,
- 5:47number two, Richard Davidson, open shot. Where do you live?
- 5:50Richard? Why? Three sixty seven Newport Avenue? Whaty three sixty seven?
- 5:56That's where you were picked up? Yeah, there is a little nothing and
- 6:01get rid of this. You feel right? You own a car? No,
- 6:04you own a gun. I didn't make a living. I'm a painter.
- 6:08I work for a contractor. How long you've been a painter? Oh,
- 6:13I've been ever hearing since nineteen thirty eight. Anyone arrested with you?
- 6:15My brother Sam, he's in the hospital. You're putting there? Yeah,
- 6:23give me a hand. Stuff here, Let's take her up to my office.
- 6:28Yeah better now, much better? Thank you so much. Really silly
- 6:46thing to do. Well, maybe you better rest here if you wants No,
- 6:48I'm fine. Let sagean Quint will drive you home. Miss Parmer.
- 6:50That's a lot of trouble for you people. I have my own car here.
- 6:54You might get woozy again. Honestly, I only faint once every twenty
- 6:58years. I never could afford to faint. You can do boys all alone,
- 7:01if you feel like it. Tomorrow morning, we'd like to have you
- 7:03come down and look at some pictures in our files. Do you think you
- 7:06could do that? Excuse me, didn't I hear you mentioned to the sergeant
- 7:10that those other people, the ones who were cheated too, were going to
- 7:14look at pictures tonight. Yes, well, I'd like to look tonight.
- 7:16Well, tomorrow'll be soon enough, Miss palm Roy. You better go home
- 7:19and rise. But it'd be faster, wouldn't it. I mean, I
- 7:21just might recognize that man in one of those pictures. Well, I don't
- 7:25think you're feeling hot. Oh, I feel fine, and I'll feel better
- 7:28still when you arrest that man who came to my house with that awful story.
- 7:32I felt terrible when I found out that watch was nothing but junk,
- 7:35and he just brought it around and said, Ralph at ordit so he could
- 7:40cheat me out of a few dollars. I'm graving to mom with love Ralph
- 7:46did. Now, maybe if I look at some of those pictures, I
- 7:49can save some other people trouble, Okay, Miss palm Roy Sergeant Quine will
- 7:54take it down. I'll get it, even though we're anxious to get an
- 7:58identification. Missus Palmer, Yeah, if you don't feel up, No,
- 8:01Lieutenant, it seems the least I can do. Why just the thought of
- 8:05another complaints? Oh, same thing, yeah, priest said John's Cathedral.
- 8:09Oh, his brother was killed in Korea last week. There is, Lieutenant
- 8:24m pretty good looking clock, Fanny, what's that all right? But it's
- 8:28certainly not worth fifty dollars doesn't even run more like five? Did he give
- 8:33it to you in a box? Finally? Yes, I believe so you
- 8:35still have the box, Missus James, my housekeeper. No, I suppose
- 8:39it's still around. It's just a plain gift box. There was no lettering
- 8:41you any time. H hard to believe anyone to do a thing like this.
- 8:46It's hard to believe. That's it. We appreciate how you feel.
- 8:48Finner you you say he brought it this morning, Yes, right after eight
- 8:52o'clock mass. And your brother's name appeared in a casually list in last night's
- 8:56paper. That's right. I heard from the War Department about Bill. It
- 9:00was death Sunday afternoon. When I told this young fellow that Bill had been
- 9:03killed. He acted like I couldn't believe it. He seems so genuine.
- 9:07He went on how he and Bill had known each other off and on for
- 9:09years. He said they'd gone to a cathedral high together. I should have
- 9:13known something was wrong about his story. Then. This man was at least
- 9:16thirty two and Bill was only twenty six. His last birthday that was August
- 9:22eleventh. I didn't get his name when he introduced himself, and I asked
- 9:24him for his name again, and he told me it was Richard Norson.
- 9:30What did he look like? Bal where's a huskier can follow? Lieutenant?
- 9:31About six feet one hundred and seventy five eighty pounds, dark brown hair,
- 9:37brown eye. Meet him Bill? And what was he wearing? Very nice
- 9:39clothes, gray slacks and sport coat. Was blueing? Anything outstanding about his
- 9:45appearance? Scars? Something like that mole birthmark? Well, no, nothing
- 9:50I can remember. Oh wait a minute now, he wore a kind of
- 9:52perfume that was clone of some kind. Maybe it was after shave lotion,
- 9:58but it was pretty strong. Me not help you, but I remember that.
- 10:01Do you notice that he had a car parked out in front? No?
- 10:03I didn't look at all when he asked you for the money for the
- 10:07clock. What did you think, Well, he didn't ask for it.
- 10:09This bird was real good, Lieutenant Gift. After he carried on about how
- 10:13shocked he was to hear Bill's death, he said he'd like to have me
- 10:16come over for dinner Sunday with him and his wife. Somehow he mentioned that
- 10:20Bill had ordered the clock from overseas, but we had it engraved and everything.
- 10:24He said he had done it as a special favorite of Bill. Now
- 10:28I volunteered to pay for it. I had to force the money on him.
- 10:31Oh, you give him a checker cash a cash So I hooked the
- 10:35clock up, and of course it didn't work. I had the telephone number
- 10:37in the address he'd given me, and I called several times to tell him
- 10:41about it. No one answered, and I thought that was funny because he
- 10:43was supposed to be a wholesale house. I looked in the director and I
- 10:46didn't find his name either. What was the name of the wholesale house He
- 10:50was supposed to represent a gift products and corporate it. I called your office
- 10:54after I checked the school records at Cathedral. No Richard Norton ever went to
- 10:58school. We're glad you called his father. No telling how many people he
- 11:03swindled around here that haven't called in. We'd like to take this along with
- 11:05us, if you don't mind, very surely. Or by the way,
- 11:09father, what branch of the service was your brother in a marine corps?
- 11:13He was a chaplain all the fourteen to the man, but he too thirty
- 11:35seven and set to the man. Hey, money quin and tell you about
- 11:45the four new cases. Yeah, them is exactly the same on every one
- 11:48of them. Casually list is published one day and they close him the next.
- 11:52Pretty slickt operators, all right. And this one woman with three children,
- 11:56husbands and captain in the army. They took up two hundred and thirty
- 12:01dollars. What do they sell her? Toys he ordered made special for the
- 12:05kids before he left her overseas. Yasha took the complaint since she just sat
- 12:11there and cried about it. Her husband was killed three weeks ago. Any
- 12:15luck on Norton, Oh, nothing in the areas file and helps Well,
- 12:18we'll keep hauling in every known bunko artist. Those with w files on those
- 12:22without look at this stuff. Pens, pencils, watching bookends, labs,
- 12:28toys, selling it to ten times what it's worth. They must have a
- 12:33source of supply, could be anywhere, nothing standard brand. You think people
- 12:37would read the papers and think before they felt on the line. He's to
- 12:41a handing out. Yeah, working in the obituaries, the oldest one in
- 12:45the world. He just happened to specialize in war casualties. How about a
- 12:48stakeout on the homes of every name in the casualty list. Oh, that'll
- 12:52be our next step. We don't come into something pretty soon. I have
- 12:56a lot of men a boys. Got a call from Crocketty from the Mug
- 13:01Files all morning with that army widow and missus farnroy An. He let a
- 13:03picked one. Here's a package Joseph Harris and Langley. Yeah no, no,
- 13:11but I will later Tonight. Fight Band CBS Radio sends you a beautiful

- 15:09He's never routine? Is here? What's he done? You? Matters?
- 15:13You in trouble? Would you mind telling us your name? I'm Jenny
- 15:16Joe's wife. What's up? We'd like to talk to him? Missus Langley?
- 15:18Do you know where he is? No? Doesn't he live here?
- 15:20Not anymore? When was the last time you saw your husband? Miss langleysday?
- 15:24Morning? Were right here? We got a big argument to attack of
- 15:26these things and left, and I was glad to see him go. Too
- 15:28much for me, I'll tell you that, yes one didn't he forget something,
- 15:35Oh that stuff? Yeah, I suppose to. Do you think he'll
- 15:37be back for I don't know about him. I just don't know what's he
- 15:41done. Do you know where he went? I haven't the slightest, not
- 15:45the slightest, And I don't care as so long as he stays away from
- 15:46me. Where does Joe work? Joe Work told me he's been selling things
- 15:52door to door. I can imagine what he's selling. I didn't know where
- 15:56you can find him. Just believe me. If I knew, i'd tell
- 15:58you, I'd tell you right away. He had any phone calls, messages?
- 16:03You might if we look at that box? Go ahead? Yeah?
- 16:14Is this the only thing of his that's around here? Yeah? A couple
- 16:17of old shirts. Any of his friends been around to see him? No?
- 16:21You know a man named Arthur Fryes? No, tall, thin man,
- 16:26partially bald. Yeah, there he is. No why he's a friend
- 16:33of your husband's. How about this man? John Gibney's his name. I've
- 16:38never seen him before. Suppose he's a friend of Joe's too, Joe working
- 16:44one of those lousy, stinking rackets. Again, we don't know, missus
- 16:45Langley. We're trying to find out you ever see this man before? No,
- 16:52this one? No, you sure never seen him? No? Wait
- 16:57this one car Yeah, I met him last week. Well that isn't the
- 17:02name he gave me, but I met him last week where at Repose Rubiat
- 17:06Cafe. Joe and I went there for dinner and this man showed up and
- 17:08all three of us eight together. Wait he said his name was Nelson.
- 17:15No, Norton, Yeah, that's it. Norton, Richard Norton. Yeah,
- 17:18not Carl Mason. Richard Norton is all right? Do you know where
- 17:22he lives? Well? He seemed like a good friend of Joe's. Though,
- 17:26is he working with Joe on this? No, we think so.
- 17:29I'll be that cuts it. He looked a straighter in there out of me.
- 17:33Come on, what are they working. They're going to people who had
- 17:37sons or husbands killed in Korea and selling them junk, they said, in
- 17:40order before the death occurred. Are you sure that the right ones? Pretty
- 17:45sure? That's awful low, even for Joe the manager. I'm the manager.
- 18:03You want what routine investigation will? I don't do anything, just trying
- 18:07to locate a couple of people, Mister Ruppola, we know they were in
- 18:10here. Last week sometime I thought you could help us. Well, what
- 18:15is it who shown those pictures being? Have you ever seen this man here
- 18:21before? Mister rupol? No, how about this one? No, I'd
- 18:27like to talk to some of the other people who work for If you don't
- 18:30mind, it's pretty important. Oh well, then let me let me see
- 18:33this this one. Yes, huh oh you think you recognize him? After
- 18:41all, we're a little older than this. But looks like mister Norton.
- 18:45He come in here often quite a bit, once twice a week. Maybe
- 18:48he liked my food. Why this man ever with him? M well,
- 18:55I can't tell mister Norton though he live around here. How do you know?
- 19:00Will he call me sometime in sports shirts, need to shave, sometime
- 19:03in slippers, but a quick bite to the breakfast? Maybe? Do you
- 19:07have any idea where he lives? No? No, somewhell need here?
- 19:11He ever write a check for you? No, don't take checks here from
- 19:15anybody? What he don't? I just want to talk to him if you
- 19:19see him again, would you mind giving us a ring? Here's my car?
- 19:22Sure? Sure? You low key live around his own press? Does
- 19:26he drive a car? No? Never see one? Do you remember the
- 19:30last time he was here, mister Ropoulo. Oh sure, half hour ago.
- 19:45Well we know who they are, Carl Mason Halius, Richard Norton and
- 19:51Joe Langley. Now all we have to do is find him crying. I
- 19:53don't want Crocket and Murph to keep an eye on Langley's wife. Another man
- 19:56at the place on sixteenth and a man and Rubi at cafe. You and
- 20:03Ash here, and you take it here? Okay, pet I work it
- 20:07here. Now you get those blow ups? Yeah, our job covering every
- 20:11residence in that neighborhood, it's harder to face. The people will come in
- 20:15with complaints. What about here, Ben? Yeah, I'm getting chili again.
- 20:36Yeah. I kind of like it though. It makes you feel better.
- 20:38Yeah, you're a manager here? Yeah? What is it? Police
- 20:42mind? Looking at a couple of pictures for us, mhm, so ever
- 20:51seen either one of them before? Oh? Why? And what they've done?
- 20:53I just want to talk to him. Thanks for your helping. Sure.
- 21:00I never thought there could be so many places for someone to live.
- 21:03Yeah, oh that finishes this sign. Let's try the other. Poor him,
- 21:18Yes, ma'am, this one No, No, I never seen him
- 21:21before in my life. How about this one mistake. I think nobody like
- 21:26him ever lived here. Sorry, getting late, Yeah, I'm getting hungry
- 21:41me too. Hey, maybe he doesn't live in this neighborhood after all,
- 21:45And I'm beginning to think you're right. No, no, man, No
- 21:51rates are the same. I said, rates are the same. Two dollars
- 21:55a day, Yes, ma'am checking our time is through? Yes, gentlemen,
- 22:00I'd like to talk to you a minute. Yes, sir, what
- 22:03is it now? We're police officers. This man registered here? No?
- 22:08Why how about this man? No? Oh? Wait? Wait? Yes,
- 22:14oh yes, of course with the number in that haircut and everything there,
- 22:18that's mister Norris. Norris? Uh what rooms he? But he was
- 22:22in three ten? He checked out this morning, didn't leave a forwarding address.
- 22:25I did he get a taxi or a car? No? I didn't
- 22:26call it cave? No wait wait, may I see that other picture?
- 22:30Then here this man picked him up in a car. I don't know where
- 22:36they went, right back where we started from, ben. Maybe they pulled
- 22:49stakes and let out of town. No more complaints? Maybe No, where's
- 22:55the waitress you designed you? It's still usually pretty good here. I think
- 23:00I'll try to fish and no cigarette? Yeah, no, you see that
- 23:08package in Mason. Yeah, I didn't understand a guy like that. Came
- 23:12from a nice home, at a nice education, college graduate honor man.
- 23:17Yeah, he was married once to a girl in Philadelphia society. Yeah,
- 23:21divorced in forty six. Been in trouble ever since. Oh what quine All?
- 23:26I'd find you too? Here? Hi? Hi, I said,
- 23:29do identna? Yeah? Oh Crockett Murphy just falling. They picked up Mason
- 23:33Langley, were at the Robot bringing the minute. Now. People haven't got
- 23:48a thing to hold me on, you know it? Now, come on,
- 23:51I've been pretty nice up to now. Just sit down, Mason.
- 23:53Were through with you yet? I don't know what you're trying to get to
- 23:56say, Honestly, I don't. You're in Langue, have been working a
- 24:00confidence game in the city for a month now. You know we've got your
- 24:03cold on it. I just don't know what this is all about. May
- 24:07I phone my lawyer in a minute, but I like to phone them?
- 24:10No, I have that right, don't I. Where do you work?
- 24:12I told you in Philadelphia. I'm on a little vacation here as all.
- 24:17Who do you work for in Philadelphia? I told you once? I forgot
- 24:19tell me again the Golden Eagle Supply Company. Now, how about that call
- 24:22of my lawyer? Sure? Who's your Bossnon? I don't have one.
- 24:26What do you mean you don't have one? Isn't there a general manager you
- 24:30have to answer to? No? No, Look, you got the wrong
- 24:33man. I know we haven't tell me. How do you explain this newspaper
- 24:37you were carrying when you were picked up? The couple of names circled on
- 24:41the casualty list. I don't have to explain that to you. How do
- 24:45you explain that box of stuff that was in your car? I told you
- 24:48they're just samples as all. A lot of it was stolen from my hotel
- 24:52room a month or so ago. Why didn't you report it to the police.
- 24:56I did. We don't have a record of it. I don't keep
- 24:59your records. Look, I'm getting a little angry with you too. You've
- 25:03kept me here an hour. You haven't charged me with a thing. Give
- 25:07me any reason why I'm being held. I don't know how, mister Langley
- 25:11Fields, but I'm certainly going to take legal action against you too. Personally.
- 25:15You have no right to do this. You either let me go or
- 25:19charge me and let me contact my attorney. I won't answer any more questions.
- 25:30Bryan, how murfing Crockett doing with Langley? Run around? Wants a
- 25:37lawyer? Getting nowhere? How about me? Some same stuff? Let's get
- 25:41it over with. I'm just where are you taking me? I told you
- 25:55I wanted to see a lawyer? What right do you left? People are
- 25:59actually crazy? Crazy, that's what you are. Okay, we are,
- 26:02But I don't know about some of those people you swindled. Mason. What
- 26:04do you mean they're waiting to have a look at you? You and Langley
- 26:08right now, refuse I've done nothing to be brought here like a common criminal
- 26:15and held out for people to look at. And you haven't got anything to
- 26:18worry about it? Okay, Langley? What you stand over there? People
- 26:26are really gonna look silly. Yeah, we know they go off your hat.
- 26:32You know what they're talking about. I told them all they're crazy,
- 26:36just crazy? Do you understand here? I will take care of you.
- 26:40Crockett. You over there when there, Mark, you aren't going to prove
- 26:48anything. Why don't you save yourself some trouble? Just stand still? Eh?
- 26:51Okay? Then yeah, bring them in, stand up straight? Everybody
- 26:55straight? All right, folks, you could all right you any of you
- 27:07people see anybody who recognize there that third man, Lieutenant Listener. Yes,
- 27:12he's the one who came to my house. She's crazy. I never saw
- 27:15before in my life I've seen Natman Lintonant he brought the clock to you.
- 27:19Yes, he's the one. What clock? Okay? Father, Miss Promroy,
- 27:23thanks for coming down with a short notice. Mitch Sherley, you want
- 27:27to step in here, please have some verification cards for you to sign.
- 27:30Be right with him across. What do you say, Mason Langley? We
- 27:41can get twenty four more people down here to identify you both. You can
- 27:45make a stakement now and save yourself some trouble. What good would it do
- 27:48us to cop out? Now? Never mind? Joe? Never mind?
- 27:52So they got us? So what I know? People have connections. My
- 27:56family's got money. Who never make it stick. That's pretty funny. One
- 28:02bunkie trying to con another one. And why don't you book as some quit
- 28:04talking? It will be out by morning, not out of this jailer,
- 28:07won't. There isn't enough money or connections to spring you on this one.
- 28:11You're gonna pay for every rotten, dirty story you've handed these people around town,
- 28:15don cuffs. Better take him out of here. Let's go. M
- 28:22h. Hard to figure a guy like that, Ben, No, it
- 28:29is just a cheap crook with an expensive background. The line up starring Bill
- 28:51Johnstone as Lieutenant Ben Guthrie with Jack Moyle the Sergeant Pete Carger, was written

- 29:29Sunday. ME and Andy is celebrating our ten thousandth broadcasts, and we hope
- 29:33all our friends will have their radio tune this day. Remember that's next Sunday
- 29:37on most of these same CBS radio stations. Dan Cumberly speaking, and remember
- 29:52America listens most to the CBS Radio network. Welcome back. This definitely in
- 30:22so many ways, the scam described here really bears a strong resemblance to that
- 30:30in the Dragnet story The Big Betty and I know I keep comparing this to
- 30:33Dragnet, but the comparisons are very hard not to make, though I think
- 30:38this one did focus a bit more on the drudgery of the investigation and of
- 30:42course had a little bit of a different outcome. Now we're going to share
- 30:48what our upcoming video theater will be tomorrow, and it's a good one.
- 30:52It's Arthur Wanderer in The Sleeping Cardinal Cardinal nineteen thirty one Sherlock Holmes movie,
- 31:02and it's a It's a good movie, a bit slow, but not something
- 31:08to really have objection to kids seeing if kids follow detective stories. And the
- 31:15thing I like so much about Wantner is, of all the actors who played
- 31:21Holmes, he to me felt the most natural fit. Nothing against Jeremy Brett
- 31:29or Basil Rathbone, but he really feels natural in the rules. So I
- 31:33hope you enjoy it. It'll be back on Monday with yours truly, Johnny
- 31:37Dollar, and join us back here on Saturday for the lineup. In the
- 31:41meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net. But
- 31:45from Boise, Idaho, this is your host, Adam Grahamson and off
