- 0:05My childhood was pretty lonely. Today I know I have a certain degree of
- 0:10autism, so I guess that' s why it took me to socialize as
- 0:15a child, although I also consider that much of it was the abandonment of
- 0:19my two parents at a very young age. In fact, the memory I
- 0:21have of them is rather vague. I spent my childhood from one house to
- 0:26another. I usually only had one or two years left before it was too
- 0:30big a burden for family members who had agreed to take care of me.
- 0:36It was in one of these many moves that I arrived at my Aunt Margarita
- 0:40' s house. She had two other girls about my age, who were
- 0:45my cousins. But since I stepped on that house, I knew they didn
- 0:50' t agree with my arrival, as they made it clear to me that
- 0:55I couldn' t touch their things and that none of them wanted me to
- 0:59sleep in their room. So, my aunt decided to put a tent down
- 1:03the hall for me to sleep there. This scared me a lot, since
- 1:10right next to my store there was a door that was like a closet,
- 1:14although my aunt used it as a cellar to keep all the things she thought
- 1:19might serve her at some point. The reason I was so scared was because
- 1:23my cousins told me that there was a monster in there who ate people.
- 1:30It should be noted that at this moment I was barely eight years old,
- 1:34so obviously I believed everything they told me, not to mention that at night
- 1:40one was heard one of them creaking inside that closet. Although I know that
- 1:45at least at the time he was not exactly a monster, there were so
- 1:49many things that sometimes fell. I remember being bothered all the time with the
- 1:55monster telling me he' d take me and all that stuff kids use to
- 2:00scare others. I was very afraid, but I was also sick of being
- 2:04the object of their jokes and jokes. On one occasion I decided to take
- 2:08this whole thing on my behalf and when they frightened me again with that subject,
- 2:14I replied that I was no longer afraid of him, since he had
- 2:17spoken to me and he and I were great friends. At first, they
- 2:21looked at me pretty confused. However, I decided to go on with all
- 2:25that and I mentioned some more details. The truth is that they were things
- 2:30that at the time I only made things up like I was very high,
- 2:36but I could change shape if I wanted to, becoming any kind of animal,
- 2:40person or object I wanted. I told them it could also turn into
- 2:45smoke and pass under the slits of the door. Also, I told them
- 2:50that if any of them ever bothered me again, the monster would go after
- 2:53them, because now he was my friend and there was everything I told him
- 2:59and as expected, they did not believe me or laugh at me, although
- 3:02I was more than willing to convince them that it was real. Obviously,
- 3:07I knew he wasn' t real, but I really wanted them to believe
- 3:13it so they would at least stop bothering me or be a little nicer to
- 3:16me. I remember I started to invent a lot more things about him I
- 3:23told them that when he turned into smoke, he could own his stuffed animals,
- 3:28that his teeth were very sharp and that he had the snout similar to
- 3:30a dog. In addition, I told them that his eyes were very similar
- 3:35to those of a cat, that he also had huge claws and that his
- 3:39legs were like those of a big bear and his claws could be seen protruding
- 3:45from each of his legs. But, in case this was soon after,
- 3:50I started making evidence. I once told them I' d prove it real.
- 3:54So I spread a little talcum at the foot of the door of that
- 3:59closet and told them that the next day there would be footsteps, since the
- 4:03monster would go to see them at night and during the morning, when everyone
- 4:08was asleep, I left my tent and started drawing those talcum footprints clearly were
- 4:13made by a girl. Besides, my aunt was upset that she wasted so
- 4:20much talcum and punished me. That day we were all going to a trampoline
- 4:27park to celebrate the birthday of one of my cousins, but since I was
- 4:31grounded, I had to stay home to clean up what I had done and
- 4:35think about my actions, although I must point out that during all that time
- 4:42I kept holding that it was not me, but the monster who had made
- 4:47those footsteps and thrown all that talcum. But they still didn' t believe
- 4:50me. I remember when they left I was really devastated because I really wanted
- 4:58to go to that trampoline park. I cleaned everything up and went to my
- 5:01store to cry. I think I cried until I fell asleep and didn'
- 5:05t wake up until they arrived and as I looked out I saw my cousins
- 5:12very happy with all the things they had bought them and I felt a huge
- 5:15envy. At that point in my life I was a child and I didn
- 5:19' t know how to deal with all those emotions I was feeling. So
- 5:24the first thing that occurred to me was to make them think that a much
- 5:28better day had passed than they did, even if I had to make it
- 5:30up. So, as soon as they went to my store to brag about
- 5:35everything they had bought from me, I replied that I didn' t care
- 5:40about that at all, because the monster and I had spent a great day
- 5:44together. I told them it didn' t matter where they went, because
- 5:48the monster was much better and much more fun. I told them that I
- 5:53could make the side of nothing and that, in addition to eating children,
- 5:57I also fed mountains and mountains of ice cream of all the existing flavors,
- 6:02some even created by him. Besides, I told them that I could move
- 6:06things with his mind and that I could fly if I wanted to. I
- 6:11told them that he and I had been playing board games and all kinds of
- 6:15fun things while they were gone, although after that, for obvious reasons,
- 6:21they didn' t believe me for some reason that I don' t know
- 6:27to this day, I couldn' t stop. I needed everyone to know
- 6:30that I had a magical friend who lived inside the closet and who, besides,
- 6:34was a pretty cool monster who could defend me from existing evil. I
- 6:41didn' t seem to care if the others weren' t believing me.
- 6:45I guess a part of me was aware that they wouldn' t believe me,
- 6:49but I still liked to talk about it. People were paying more attention
- 6:53to me, even if it was for a few moments. I think I
- 6:57was talking about him for a long time n n n maybe l orca of
- 7:00a year, telling more and more fantastic things about his appearance, skills and
- 7:05other things that only a child of that age could invent. But at the
- 7:11same time, this also meant that, more rightly, the children in general
- 7:15did not want to be my friends, so I became more and more lonely.
- 7:20I remember one day in particular, when my cousins had been invited to
- 7:25a birthday party, but I didn' t. I was sitting in my
- 7:29tent thinking that if I had friends, everything would be so much better in
- 7:34my life. I remember while I was thinking about it, I heard a
- 7:41creak coming from that closet. Clearly a broom or something had fallen off,
- 7:45but at the time I spoke to him. It wasn' t like other
- 7:49times when I did it out loud to make sure anyone near me listened to
- 7:54me to get a little attention or credibility. No, on this occasion I
- 8:01only spoke to him, greeted him and recalled that I asked him if he
- 8:05didn' t feel very lonely in there and although I didn' t have
- 8:09any answers, I kept talking to him. I told him how unhappy I
- 8:13was and how much I would like my real parents to take me home to
- 8:18live with them. I told him a lot of things without getting any answers
- 8:22from the other side of the door, but I still kept talking. At
- 8:26some point I told him that it was very cool and that it would be
- 8:31fantastic if I could do the things he did, like make the side or
- 8:35be able to make people fly or move things with my Mind. I really
- 8:39don' t remember everything I told him, but after about 15 minutes I
- 8:45told him it would be great if he could be my friend. And after
- 8:48that I had nothing more to say, so I was silent with my head
- 8:52stuck to the wall and that' s when I heard a voice telling me
- 8:58c or of course that I want to be your little friend. This surprised
- 9:03me a lot, but at the same time it also scared me because literally,
- 9:09the voice had come out of that closet, and not only that,
- 9:13but that voice didn' t sound human at all. I don' t
- 9:16know how to explain it, but it was like a dog' s.
- 9:18I don' t mean it sounded like a dog was talking. It was
- 9:22like those weird Internet videos when dogs try to imitate some human words, but
- 9:28their vocal cords aren' t designed for that, so it sounds very strange.
- 9:33It was kind of like that, but you could understand it a little
- 9:37better. I remember at the time I got so scared that I came out
- 9:43of the store and looked straight at the door. My heart was beating very
- 9:46hard and for a moment I thought it might have been my imagination, as
- 9:52everything seemed quite quiet. However, seconds after I left the store, I
- 9:56saw clearly how the handle on that door was starting to spin. At that
- 10:01moment I couldn' t take it anymore and went down the stairs. I
- 10:05found my aunt preparing the food and although I tried to tell her what was
- 10:11going on, she didn' t believe the truth. I can' t
- 10:15blame her after all the lies she had told during that year about a monster
- 10:20who lived in the closet. And even though I begged my aunt to sleep
- 10:24somewhere else and even asked my cousins to let me sleep in her room,
- 10:28nobody let me do it and I had to go back to the store that
- 10:33night. I was very frightened, but finally I was able to sleep,
- 10:37although at some point in the morning I was awakened by a characteristic smell.
- 10:41It wasn' t a bad smell, it was quite the opposite. It
- 10:46smelled like ice cream. It was like I literally had ice cream all around
- 10:48me. It was a pretty unmistakable smell. I remember missing I opened the
- 10:54shop close a little bit to look at, but I couldn' t see
- 10:58anything. It was very dark, pure everything, but that sweet scent kept
- 11:03flooding my lungs. I think I kept thinking about this for about a minute
- 11:07until I heard his voice again. That gave me the creeps, although she
- 11:13only asked me if I liked ice cream I was really scared. I covered
- 11:18myself with all the blankets wishing that he would leave once and for all,
- 11:22that he would just disappear and leave me alone. But that didn' t
- 11:26happen. I heard clearly how the door to that closet opened and after that
- 11:31I began to hear footsteps around my shop, but they were not common footprints,
- 11:37they were not shoes, it was like cicadas. They bump into the
- 11:41floor every step of the way. I was just surrounding myself and listening to
- 11:46how he touched the fabric of the store, making it sound a little bit
- 11:50with each touch. He asked me again if I liked ice cream. I
- 11:54was close to the crying for the despair that caused me and suddenly, or
- 11:58just or remained silent. He knew that he had not left, for he
- 12:03felt his presence in the place, but he remained silent. After about three
- 12:09minutes he told me that I didn' t have to be afraid of him,
- 12:13that I wanted to be my friend and that I had asked him if
- 12:18he wanted us to be friends and his answer was that yes the truth.
- 12:20I didn' t know what to say at the time. I just kept
- 12:24quiet and asked if I liked ice cream and what my favorite flavor was.
- 12:30At that time I don' t know why, but the most logical idea
- 12:33I came up with was to answer him and without discovering my face, I
- 12:39told him that my favorite ice cream was chocolate flavor. He told me that
- 12:43he could create all the chocolate- flavored ice cream I wanted, that he
- 12:48could eat so much that he would want to throw up, and I guess
- 12:54that was enough to convince a nine- year- old girl that she was
- 12:56someone reliable. I remember then I took off my blankets and gave him up.
- 13:00I said I' d like that. At that point he told me
- 13:03to open the store for him and when I finished running completely. The closure
- 13:09was out there. The first thing I noticed was his eyes shining in the
- 13:15dark. They were green and, as I had described before, they were
- 13:18identical to data. As soon as my eyes got used to the darkness,
- 13:24I could also see that all the descriptions I had said were real for nothing.
- 13:30He looked adorable. It was pretty scary. He was a demonic being.
- 13:35I asked him what he was and he replied that he had come out
- 13:39of my imagination that I had created him. He also told me that only
- 13:43really special children could create what they imagined and told me that I was very
- 13:48special. I asked him about ice cream, but he told me he would
- 13:56prepare it later, although I couldn' t help but notice that it smelled
- 14:01of ice cream, it literally smelled of all the flavors on the side of
- 14:03the world. And as the night progressed, the truth was that I was
- 14:07more accustomed to his appearance. At least it wasn' t that important anymore.
- 14:11I had a great deal with him and told him how much my cousins
- 14:16bothered me and that I no longer liked living in that house. He listened
- 14:18to me very carefully and at some point he said yes, he wanted to
- 14:24help me with my cousins. I told him that would be fine, but
- 14:28he didn' t want me to eat them, because if everything I had
- 14:31invented was real, he would eat human flesh. He looked at me a
- 14:37little upset, but he told me that he was fine and that he would
- 14:41only give them a very good scare. When the first rays of the sun
- 14:45began to rise, he rose from the floor and went back into the closet,
- 14:48not before reminding me that he would return. Then I told him I
- 14:52was fine. I remember that was the first time in a long time that
- 14:58all day long I didn' t laugh about that monster. No one questioned
- 15:03me about it either. I suppose it was a great relief to my aunt
- 15:07that I had already left that subject for peace while my cousins were enrolled in
- 15:13a school with Morning Schedule. The school I was going to was in the
- 15:16afternoon, so I practically went into school at the time they were going out,
- 15:22and that day was no different. My aunt was after me after school,
- 15:28because it was already dark. By that time everything seemed too normal until
- 15:33we arrived at the house. As soon as my aunt parked the car,
- 15:39we could see that the door of the house was open and that it looked
- 15:41empty. Only at the foot of the stairs could you see some stuffed animals.
- 15:46This alarmed my aunt, who ran to the neighbors' house to find
- 15:50out where her daughters were, although to the relief of all my cousins were
- 15:54in the house across the street, but that was not a reassuring answer.
- 16:02They claimed that the monster attacked them. They mentioned everything I had said about
- 16:07him, but my aunt only bothered me and told me that I had scared
- 16:11them to believe those things. Almost immediately. My cousin, who was one
- 16:17year older than me, showed him her arm and told her that it was
- 16:21not true, that it was real, because she had scratched it on her
- 16:25arm. It clearly looked like something with sharp claws scratched it. At first,
- 16:33everyone thought it was a wild animal that, for some reason, had
- 16:37been in the vicinity, but no one saw anything and when they looked carefully
- 16:42at the house they found nothing either. My aunt took my cousin to the
- 16:48doctor and they told her that it seemed like a very big animal, that
- 16:52it was not something that could have caused a simple cat or a dog.
- 16:56Anyone. I remember that night, while I was trying to sleep that smell,
- 17:03ice cream came back to me. I was very scared and at that
- 17:07moment I heard the door open and that voice told me to open the store.
- 17:11I obeyed and asked him why he had caused them so much harm.
- 17:15He replied that he had kept his word and that he had not eaten them.
- 17:21I was pretty scared about all that. I just told him I didn
- 17:25' t want him to do anything to them anymore, but at that point
- 17:30he told me he hadn' t seen the best part yet and then he
- 17:36started to evaporate, becoming a lot of smoke. After that he left and
- 17:38I saw him slip through one of my cousins' bedroom doors. They had
- 17:45decided to sleep together that day because they were so afraid that that thing would
- 17:51come back and soon afterwards I heard them scream terrified. At that moment,
- 17:56my aunt left her room to help her daughters. I also ran to see
- 18:00what was happening and when we opened the door, we saw that all the
- 18:06stuffed animals and toys my cousins had were moving on their own and laughing in
- 18:11a demonic way that frozen our blood. All this while they screamed and cried
- 18:17crouched in the bed, as the dolls began to surround them. At the
- 18:22time, my aunt was brave enough to come in and get her daughters out.
- 18:26From there. After that I could see how that demon monster materialized.
- 18:32We went to a neighbor' s house and the next morning my aunt started
- 18:37looking for another place to live and although they found a place, I no
- 18:41longer fit with them, so I went to live with my grandmother, who
- 18:45accepted me for a while and after that day I never saw him again For
- 18:49a long time I thought this story was the product of my imagination, something
- 18:56that convinced me that had happened, because everyone abandoned me. However, now
- 19:00that I am an adult with my own children, I remembered the story because
- 19:07my six- year- old son drew a picture and showed it to me.
- 19:10He told me there was a monster living under his bed, but he
- 19:14was a good monster. At first I followed his current and encouraged him positively
- 19:18to tell me more about that monster. But what iced my blood was when
- 19:23he told me that the monster smelled like ice cream and as soon as I
- 19:29looked closely at the drawing, I realized that it had the characteristics of what
- 19:33I had created years ago. The truth. I don' t know what
- 19:37I' m going to do right now. I don' t know how
- 19:38bad or good that thing is. Maybe I' ll go with some witch
- 19:42or maybe a priest. I haven' t decided yet, but if there
- 19:47' s any more news, I' ll send another story. Story written
- 19:52and adapted by Lisa Hernández
