- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald. Let's join him right now. We're getting ready
- 0:02Speaker 1: for the combine ESPN Zone Jeff Lagwald. He joins us
- 0:05Speaker 1: here on a Monday afternoon. Jeff Legwald's appearances brought to
- 0:08Speaker 1: you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW Local
- 0:11Speaker 1: sixty eight. Start with a job and with a career.
- 0:13Speaker 1: What up, Leggy, We're doing great man, Leggy. We we
- 0:18Speaker 1: have been talking about the Broncos needs to upgrade offensive
- 0:22Speaker 1: skill position talent. One of your colleagues there at ESPN,
- 0:25Speaker 1: Aaron Shatz, suggested bold move trade up to draft Ashton Genty.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Before we get to the should they Let's just go
- 0:35Speaker 1: with informationally, Leggy, what would it cost to get up
- 0:39Speaker 1: high enough to think about adding Ashton Genty to the Broncos.
- 0:45Speaker 2: You know you probably gotta go from twenty to you know,
- 0:50Speaker 2: you got you gotta get a feel for the for
- 0:53Speaker 2: the board. If you're the team, do you have to
- 0:55Speaker 2: go to ten? You know you're gonna have to go higher. Now.
- 0:57Speaker 2: You know a lot of people in the league would
- 0:59Speaker 2: say you don't have to get into the top ten
- 1:02Speaker 2: to get a running back, but you know, this is
- 1:04Speaker 2: kind of an odd class of running backs because it
- 1:08Speaker 2: goes from gent as a first round grade, and then
- 1:13Speaker 2: most of the other backs. You know, the next group
- 1:16Speaker 2: of backs is probably ranked somewhere between thirty five and
- 1:19Speaker 2: forty five on people's boards. So that's kind of what
- 1:23Speaker 2: you're dealing with. My thing for trading up is the
- 1:28Speaker 2: player you're trading up for that you know, is the
- 1:33Speaker 2: gap between him and the and the player you could
- 1:35Speaker 2: get at your spot or later. Is that gap big
- 1:39Speaker 2: enough to dictate you give up what you're going to
- 1:43Speaker 2: have to give up. And you know, I personally believe
- 1:46Speaker 2: the Broncos are still at a place where they need
- 1:49Speaker 2: any and all young draft picks to keep being added
- 1:54Speaker 2: to this roster so they can be ready for the
- 1:57Speaker 2: long haul. And you know, if you're going to move
- 1:59Speaker 2: up up, you're giving up prime, prime picks. You know,
- 2:04Speaker 2: you're you're probably giving up one more pretty good pick
- 2:07Speaker 2: to move up with the first round?
- 2:10Speaker 3: All right, which player is? And I think I've asked
- 2:13Speaker 3: you this before, but I can't remember your answer, so
- 2:15Speaker 3: I'll ask it again. Which players worth trading up for
- 2:18Speaker 3: Warren or Genty for the Broncos situation for their needs?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean again, it's it's how far you got
- 2:25Speaker 2: to go. If you've only got to go a couple
- 2:27Speaker 2: of slots, then both guys are.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Well, let's say they got to go to ten.
- 2:30Speaker 3: For the sake of the conversation, LEGI, let's set the
- 2:32Speaker 3: table there. They got to go from twenty to ten.
- 2:34Speaker 3: What are we looking at?
- 2:35Speaker 2: I think that price is high. You're probably giving up
- 2:38Speaker 2: you know, I don't have the charts in front of me,
- 2:41Speaker 2: but you're you're probably giving up a day a late
- 2:45Speaker 2: day two pick in there, somewhere a third or you
- 2:50Speaker 2: know somewhere in there, and you know we all you
- 2:53Speaker 2: got to do is look at uh, you know, Nick
- 2:56Speaker 2: Benito wasn't all pro. He's a second round pick. I mean,
- 2:59Speaker 2: what kind of you want to give up when you
- 3:02Speaker 2: need players? I think one running back? Doesn't you know?
- 3:07Speaker 2: Right now? Outweigh the two guys you could get with
- 3:11Speaker 2: two picks in the first two days of the draft.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Jeff Legwell to ESPN Combine Draft. We're getting ready for it,
- 3:17Speaker 1: Leggy's let's think curveball, okay, because naturally we all just
- 3:21Speaker 1: go right to running back and tight end when we
- 3:23Speaker 1: start talking about Denver in this draft. Yeah, but there's
- 3:28Speaker 1: also a need for good young defensive linemen on this
- 3:31Speaker 1: team price controlled defensive lineman. And you've talked about this,
- 3:36Speaker 1: the need to not put yourself in a corner so
- 3:39Speaker 1: that you have to take a tight end in round one.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Let's start talking about guys that could be available at
- 3:46Speaker 1: number twenty on the defensive line. Like obviously Mason Graham
- 3:50Speaker 1: is going to be long gone out of Michigan, But
- 3:53Speaker 1: are there other pieces that you could like in a
- 3:56Speaker 1: world where Denver maybe goes defensive line at number twenty.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Well, you know, and Sean Payton has done that in
- 4:03Speaker 2: his time with the Saints. You know, they have looked
- 4:07Speaker 2: at defensive line in the first round on several occasions
- 4:10Speaker 2: in his time there, and that you could put a
- 4:14Speaker 2: bunch of names in the hopper defensive line and come
- 4:18Speaker 2: up with a player worthy of the bottom of the
- 4:21Speaker 2: first or the bottom third of the first round. It
- 4:23Speaker 2: was the strongest position group at the Senior Bowl, and
- 4:26Speaker 2: you know, just take your pick, especially on the interior guys,
- 4:33Speaker 2: and it it'll be the strongest overall position group here,
- 4:37Speaker 2: probably an Indy if you're just going by graded players.
- 4:42Speaker 2: This is kind of a big guy draft, So it's
- 4:44Speaker 2: gonna be interesting to see how the first round goes
- 4:46Speaker 2: because the big guy positions are a lot stronger than
- 4:50Speaker 2: some of the skill positions. And maybe that's that's because
- 4:55Speaker 2: those are the guys making the real money in nil that.
- 4:59Speaker 2: You know, the Broncos at that twenty spot, you know
- 5:02Speaker 2: you're looking for an upfield, attacking defensive lineman. You know,
- 5:07Speaker 2: the young guy.
- 5:08Speaker 1: From Oregon, Derek Harmon, Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Harman Mississippi. The young guy from Mississippi had a tremendous
- 5:15Speaker 2: senior goal. I mean, those are the types of players
- 5:18Speaker 2: I'd be looking for if I'm the Broncos, and there
- 5:22Speaker 2: will be more of those players available at twenty when
- 5:26Speaker 2: their pick comes around than those other spots.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I'm curious about Kenneth Grant out of Michigan. It's six
- 5:32Speaker 1: foot three, three hundred and forty pounds. My god, could
- 5:36Speaker 1: that guy be a fit in Vance Joseph's front.
- 5:41Speaker 2: He certainly could be. Again, you know you could in
- 5:44Speaker 2: rounds two, first, one, two, three, and four you can
- 5:48Speaker 2: just put names of defensive lineman in the hat and
- 5:52Speaker 2: you will pick out somebody who can compete right away
- 5:56Speaker 2: for your team. It's that deep a class I think
- 5:59Speaker 2: in in the defensive line, all right.
- 6:02Speaker 3: I want to go back to the draft chart since
- 6:04Speaker 3: you had mentioned it, then I do have another question
- 6:06Speaker 3: for you. But this is wild and Nate, you like
- 6:07Speaker 3: the math. I pulled one up that's on draft tech
- 6:10Speaker 3: dot com legy. So they're valuing the Bronco pick at
- 6:13Speaker 3: eight fifty at number twenty. That's how many points are
- 6:16Speaker 3: getting for that in order to get up to ten,
- 6:18Speaker 3: which is Chicago that drafted that pick is valued at
- 6:21Speaker 3: thirteen hundred. So if you're really going to get to
- 6:23Speaker 3: true value for value, they'd have to get up their
- 6:26Speaker 3: second round pick because that's at three eighty. Their third
- 6:30Speaker 3: round pick is only valued at one sixty five when
- 6:33Speaker 3: making these trades, and maybe I'm sure you know we
- 6:36Speaker 3: don't like a guy anyway, so let's just pick up
- 6:38Speaker 3: a pick. How close do you have to get to
- 6:40Speaker 3: the true value of the two picks there? How close
- 6:42Speaker 3: would they have to get to thirteen hundred points to
- 6:45Speaker 3: make the trade? Would you say.
- 6:47Speaker 2: It'll cost you more this year any Because it's a
- 6:49Speaker 2: center board, most teams will have between fourteen and twenty
- 6:54Speaker 2: first round grades, and that that'll be fewer than a
- 6:57Speaker 2: lot of recent years. So in teams' minds, the top
- 7:03Speaker 2: fifteen picks are higher in value. Whether that's true or not,
- 7:08Speaker 2: but they believe they're higher in value than they would
- 7:11Speaker 2: be in like four of the last five drafts. So
- 7:15Speaker 2: I think it will cost you more to get up there,
- 7:18Speaker 2: because again, it's a thin first round that drops pretty
- 7:22Speaker 2: heavy after picks, you know, player fifteen or sixteen. So
- 7:28Speaker 2: if you're the Broncos, you're hoping you have a at
- 7:31Speaker 2: least two of your first round grades still on the
- 7:33Speaker 2: board by the time pick twenty rolls around.
- 7:37Speaker 3: You're a fascinating show. On First Draft Today on ESPN,
- 7:40Speaker 3: between Field Jates and Mel Kiper, they were talking about
- 7:44Speaker 3: Travis Hunter and his value. Kuiper said he feels that
- 7:47Speaker 3: Travis Hunter would have been higher rated than any of
- 7:49Speaker 3: the receivers last year.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Do you agree with that?
- 7:53Speaker 2: I do not, at least for my study of them.
- 7:57Speaker 2: It doesn't mean he's not a spectacular player, but he's
- 8:00Speaker 2: He's a lot less refined at receiver than he is
- 8:03Speaker 2: at corner, and I think most teams even now see
- 8:08Speaker 2: him as more of a work in progress as a
- 8:11Speaker 2: receiver than as a corner.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Got those ball skills, though you can't fake that part.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Of it, you know, get him you know, give him
- 8:19Speaker 2: two routes he likes and leave it at that. But
- 8:22Speaker 2: I'm just talking as a well rounded prospect that you know,
- 8:26Speaker 2: full time receivers are going to be more refined.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Uh.
- 8:31Speaker 2: And I don't think you know, he would have been
- 8:33Speaker 2: higher than Malik Neighbors or or you know, in that
- 8:37Speaker 2: category of receiver.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Jeff Lakewald brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
