- 0:00Speaker 1: Howard, my dad was T-boned by a utility vehicle and
- 0:04Speaker 1: is in surgery now. What should I do?
- 0:07Speaker 2: I'm sorry to hear about that. It's really great that
- 0:09Speaker 2: you're getting him the medical care and treatment that he
- 0:11Speaker 2: needs right now. These are three important things that I
- 0:14Speaker 2: think you need to know. Injuries are unexpected and turn
- 0:17Speaker 2: lives upside down. I'm Howard Ankin, and I'm here to help.

- 0:49Speaker 3: and more. This is the Sox Machine Podcast with your hosts,
- 0:53Speaker 3: Jim Margulis and Josh Nelson.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Hello, folks. Welcome to the after party as the Chicago
- 0:59Speaker 1: White Sox just won game one of the American League
- 1:02Speaker 1: Division Series. I'm Josh Nelson. This is the Sox Machine
- 1:06Speaker 1: postgame show presented by Aiken Law. And, of course, part
- 1:09Speaker 1: of the Foul Territory Network as we are streaming live
- 1:12Speaker 1: from the Removit Theater. After the White Sox just won 3-0,
- 1:16Speaker 1: the comments section, you guys are already... going crazy, and
- 1:22Speaker 1: it's just great to see, and everybody's so excited after
- 1:26Speaker 1: this huge win for the White Sox. It was one
- 1:31Speaker 1: heck of a party here at the Remova Theater, and
- 1:35Speaker 1: Brian Bruin puts it best, Grant Taylor. We're definitely going
- 1:37Speaker 1: to be talking about Grant Taylor. What an amazing performance
- 1:42Speaker 1: by Grant Taylor, and yeah, well said. One down, two
- 1:46Speaker 1: to go. For the White Sox. As they are now 3-0.
- 1:51Speaker 1: To start this postseason. And just to catch up. Again
- 1:54Speaker 1: the White Sox winning 3-0. And a fantastic job. On
- 2:00Speaker 1: the pitching front. For the Chicago White Sox. To only
- 2:03Speaker 1: allow 3 hits. It started with Hagan Smith. In which
- 2:06Speaker 1: Hagan Smith retired the first 8 batters. For the Chicago
- 2:09Speaker 1: White Sox. He ended up losing his control. And he
- 2:13Speaker 1: walked 3 straight batters. And we talked about that in
- 2:16Speaker 1: the pregame show. That was a concern for Higgins-Smith entering
- 2:20Speaker 1: this game. But then Will Venable, after the bases were loaded,
- 2:24Speaker 1: went to Brian Hudson, and Hudson was able to get
- 2:26Speaker 1: that key out to get out of that jam, the
- 2:28Speaker 1: bases-loaded jam for the Guardians. And then Jordan Hicks came in,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and Hicks is just throwing heat. I think StatCast had
- 2:38Speaker 1: him at 102 miles an hour for one of his fastballs.
- 2:42Speaker 1: He did end up walking a batter, so he only
- 2:44Speaker 1: went two-thirds of an inning He did pick up two
- 2:47Speaker 1: strikeouts before Will Venable went to Anthony Kaye to get
- 2:51Speaker 1: out of another jam. Kaye, the very first pitch that
- 2:55Speaker 1: he threw, he gave up a double to Travis Bazzano.
- 2:58Speaker 1: So he ended up getting himself out of his own
- 3:00Speaker 1: jam that he created. after that double. But then Kay's
- 3:05Speaker 1: been very good against the Guardians this year. He went
- 3:08Speaker 1: one in the third inning, just allowing the one hit
- 3:11Speaker 1: to Bazzano and then walking one batter. But then Grant Taylor,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and we'll talk more about him as managing editor of
- 3:20Speaker 1: Sox Machine, Jim Margulis joins me in a moment. Just outstanding.
- 3:25Speaker 1: One of the best postseason players reliever performances ever in
- 3:30Speaker 1: white socks history. I'm not exactly sure. What would even
- 3:35Speaker 1: beat this? I mean, four scoreless innings, only two hits allowed.
- 3:40Speaker 1: It did not walk a batter and struck out six.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And he did this on 42 pitches, 42 pitches for
- 3:51Speaker 1: grant Taylor. That is just insane. And as key Fleur
- 3:56Speaker 1: puts it in the comment section, The White Sox are
- 3:59Speaker 1: basically operating with a 10-man bullpen and only two dedicated starters.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Do they have two dedicated starters right now? It very
- 4:06Speaker 1: well could just be one dedicated starter for the Chicago
- 4:10Speaker 1: White Sox and Sean Burke and then 11 other pitchers.
- 4:15Speaker 1: But just a fantastic performance by Grant Taylor and the
- 4:21Speaker 1: White Sox pitching staff to only allow three hits to
- 4:24Speaker 1: the Cleveland guardians today. And we did talk about the
- 4:27Speaker 1: walks and the pregame show for the white socks. As
- 4:32Speaker 1: we knew that that was going to be a little
- 4:34Speaker 1: bit of an issue in the past. It's been an
- 4:36Speaker 1: issue for the white socks pitchers on typically they average
- 4:40Speaker 1: about four walks a game today. They ended up walking
- 4:43Speaker 1: five batters for Cleveland. So I'm sure that manager will Venable.
- 4:46Speaker 1: We'll stress that to the pitching staff that you have
- 4:48Speaker 1: to be careful with the guardians of the walks. There's
- 4:50Speaker 1: too many free passes and, But the White Sox only
- 4:53Speaker 1: allowed three hits today to the Cleveland Guardians. And when
- 4:58Speaker 1: we take a look at the win probability graphic, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: the Guardians started really strong. Parker Messick, give him a
- 5:05Speaker 1: cap tip. He was really getting the White Sox batters
- 5:08Speaker 1: guessing the first three innings where he picked up six strikeouts.
- 5:12Speaker 1: And five of those strikeouts were looking for the White Sox.
- 5:16Speaker 1: So there was a lot of guessing the first time.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And let's say like the second time through the order.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Until Munataka Murakami came up to bat. And that is
- 5:28Speaker 1: our Fox 1 moment of the game. MLB on Fox
- 5:37Speaker 1: is streaming on Fox 1. The Race to the World
- 5:39Speaker 1: series has started. We have your front row seat to

- 5:50Speaker 1: 2026 National League DS National League Championship Series and the

- 6:03Speaker 1: Start your Fox one three day free trial on Fox
- 6:07Speaker 1: one dot com. And that moment of the game for
- 6:11Speaker 1: the Chicago White Sox is Munataka Murakami's two-run homer. And
- 6:16Speaker 1: in the first inning, Miguel Vargas drew, I thought, a
- 6:19Speaker 1: pretty tough walk against Parker Messick to really drive up
- 6:22Speaker 1: that pitch count. I had him at 23 pitches for
- 6:25Speaker 1: Messick in the first inning. And that was a great
- 6:27Speaker 1: job by Munataka Murakami to hit a single to center
- 6:31Speaker 1: field to continue adding pressure to Messick. So Munataka Murakami
- 6:36Speaker 1: was ready to go Against Messick and maybe was one
- 6:39Speaker 1: of the few White Sox hitters that was ready to go.
- 6:41Speaker 1: To face the Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher. But then that second.
- 6:46Speaker 1: At bat. What an absolute bomb for Munataka Murakami. A
- 6:51Speaker 1: 440 foot shot. This place behind me absolutely went crazy.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I posted the reaction video on social media. We're getting
- 6:59Speaker 1: a lot of feedback from Munataka Murakami's fans all the
- 7:03Speaker 1: way out in Japan. They're very excited. And what a
- 7:07Speaker 1: great moment for Murakami. That is now Murakami's second home
- 7:11Speaker 1: run against Parker Messick this season.
- 7:14Speaker 2: And.
- 7:15Speaker 1: was really the driving factor for a lot of this game.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And this is why home runs are so important in
- 7:22Speaker 1: the postseason, because they can dramatically change the direction of
- 7:26Speaker 1: a game. Because after that inning... Before then, the Guardians
- 7:32Speaker 1: had the bases loaded. They had a great opportunity to
- 7:34Speaker 1: bust the game open with a big two-out hit, but
- 7:37Speaker 1: they couldn't find the big two-out hits today with runners
- 7:40Speaker 1: in scoring position. That's going to be the thing for
- 7:42Speaker 1: the Guardians. They had good opportunities to score runs against
- 7:45Speaker 1: the White Sox, but they just could not capitalize. And
- 7:48Speaker 1: then to turn around and have Murakami hit that absolute
- 7:52Speaker 1: bomb of a home run, what a gut punch to
- 7:55Speaker 1: the Guardians, but what a huge boost for the Chicago
- 7:58Speaker 1: White Sox to take that lead. And it did appear
- 8:01Speaker 1: at one point later in the game that Tommy Pham
- 8:04Speaker 1: was going to have a three-run homer, but that was
- 8:06Speaker 1: a great defensive play by Angel Martinez at the wall
- 8:09Speaker 1: to rob Pham of extra base hits. So it really
- 8:11Speaker 1: looked like that Murakami's home run was going to be
- 8:14Speaker 1: the deciding factor. And it really ended up being because
- 8:16Speaker 1: the White Sox pitching was just absolutely fantastic. But yeah,
- 8:20Speaker 1: congrats to Munataka Murakami, his first MLB postseason home run,
- 8:24Speaker 1: I am sure. And based on social media, so many
- 8:27Speaker 1: fans in Japan who have jumped on the White Sox
- 8:29Speaker 1: bandwagon are just ecstatic right now with that big moment.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So congrats to Munataka Murakami for delivering today in game
- 8:38Speaker 1: one for the Chicago White Sox. The other big moment
- 8:42Speaker 1: is Kyle Teal's mad dash to home. And what a
- 8:48Speaker 1: daring sprint. So up two to nothing. And take it
- 8:53Speaker 1: a look again at the win probability calculator.
- 8:55Speaker 4: And with.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Teal at first base after drawing a tough walk. Colson Montgomery,
- 9:02Speaker 1: what do you want to call it? Gets one off
- 9:04Speaker 1: the end of the bat. And Jose Ramirez is not
- 9:07Speaker 1: at his typical position at third base. And Montgomery's double
- 9:11Speaker 1: just trickles down the left field line and just keeps rolling,
- 9:14Speaker 1: which buys enough time with two outs for Kyle Teal
- 9:17Speaker 1: to make a mad dash. And maybe it was too
- 9:20Speaker 1: risky for Justin Jersley to send Teal home, but it
- 9:23Speaker 1: ended up being the right call. Even though the throw
- 9:26Speaker 1: beat Kyle Teal at the plate, Austin Hedges could not
- 9:29Speaker 1: hold on to the throw and Teal was able to
- 9:32Speaker 1: slide in safely for the third out for the third run.
- 9:36Speaker 1: A big run at it, especially late on, because typically
- 9:41Speaker 1: to feel more comfortable about how a team is standing.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I always feel like if you can get the four
- 9:47Speaker 1: runs and then it requires a grand slam, then I
- 9:50Speaker 1: start feeling OK. But with the White Sox having a
- 9:54Speaker 1: three run lead and getting deeper and deeper into the game,
- 9:57Speaker 1: I just didn't know if the Guardians really had enough opportunity.
- 10:00Speaker 1: offense today against the White Sox pitchers to make a
- 10:03Speaker 1: comeback late but that was the other big moment was
- 10:07Speaker 1: Kyle Teal scoring all the way from first base We
- 10:12Speaker 1: are going to take a quick break for a word
- 10:14Speaker 1: from our sponsors, but coming up next, let's talk more
- 10:17Speaker 1: about the White Sox pitching and how Hagan Smith fared.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And of course, let's all rave about Grant Taylor. Keep
- 10:24Speaker 1: feeding us your comments and your thoughts about game one
- 10:28Speaker 1: with the White Sox winning three to nothing. A great
- 10:31Speaker 1: way to start the American League Division Series as we
- 10:33Speaker 1: continue to stream live from the Rimowa Theater, the Sox

- 11:41Speaker 1: My drop shirts after his big home run in the

- 12:03Speaker 1: the foul territory shop.com. And again, again, The postgame show continues.
- 12:09Speaker 1: White Sox winning 3-0, getting six hits today. And take
- 12:14Speaker 1: a look at the box score for the Chicago White Sox.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Murataka Murakami went 2-4. Miguel Vargas went 1-2, but Miguel
- 12:22Speaker 1: Vargas also drew two walks. A great day at the
- 12:24Speaker 1: plate for Miguel Vargas, especially after he went 0-9 against
- 12:29Speaker 1: the Houston Astros. Colson Montgomery had a great day at
- 12:33Speaker 1: the plate. He went 2-3. with that RBI driving in
- 12:36Speaker 1: Kyle Teal all the way from first base. Kyle Teal
- 12:41Speaker 1: drew a walk, and he scored on that run. Tristan
- 12:43Speaker 1: Peters had a pinch hit base hit. He went one
- 12:46Speaker 1: for two, pinch hitting for Randall Gritchick. We did not
- 12:49Speaker 1: see Andrew Benatendi in today's game. Sam Antonacci came in
- 12:53Speaker 1: late for Tommy Pham, in which Tommy Pham had some
- 12:57Speaker 1: bad luck as he flew out to left field, and
- 12:59Speaker 1: that ended up being a two-plan for Miguel Vargas as
- 13:02Speaker 1: he got thrown out of first base. Again, a terrific
- 13:05Speaker 1: defensive play by Angel Martinez for the Guardians. The White
- 13:09Speaker 1: Sox went 0-4 with runners in scoring position. So kind
- 13:15Speaker 1: of a weird game with the Guardians going 0-3. Neither
- 13:19Speaker 1: team was able to get a base hit with runners
- 13:22Speaker 1: in scoring position. But that's why the home runs are important.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Murakami's two-run homer being a big difference. And then Kyle
- 13:30Speaker 1: Teal scored all the way from first base off Colson
- 13:33Speaker 1: Montgomery's And his double. Great to see Montgomery really picking
- 13:38Speaker 1: up in this postseason and getting those sits and try
- 13:40Speaker 1: to gain more confidence at the plate. The White Sox
- 13:43Speaker 1: could definitely use that. But on the pitching front, what
- 13:47Speaker 1: a fantastic pitching performance by the Chicago White Sox. And
- 13:51Speaker 1: I am curious to know, moving forward, on how the
- 13:53Speaker 1: White Sox are going to be using Hagan Smith. Because
- 13:57Speaker 1: I feel comfortable that he's good for 35 pitches in
- 14:00Speaker 1: his outings. He retired the first eight batters. But it
- 14:04Speaker 1: just seemed like when he got past pitch 35, he
- 14:07Speaker 1: ended up losing his release point. He was having a
- 14:09Speaker 1: difficult time as far as locating... His fastballs especially just
- 14:14Speaker 1: was losing on both sides of the plate. And his
- 14:17Speaker 1: slider can sometimes be a pitch that he steals strikes early,
- 14:21Speaker 1: but he really wants to use that diving below the
- 14:25Speaker 1: strike zone to induce whiffs and get those strikeouts. So
- 14:28Speaker 1: when he ended up walking, the bases loaded. That was
- 14:30Speaker 1: kind of a bummer, and I was really worried of like, wow,
- 14:33Speaker 1: what a great performance by Hagan. I hope this doesn't
- 14:36Speaker 1: go sideways for him. But the White Sox were able
- 14:39Speaker 1: to get out of that jam. Same thing with Anthony Kaye.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I was a bit concerned about how Anthony Kaye was
- 14:44Speaker 1: throwing when he was first coming into the game. Again,
- 14:47Speaker 1: he has made it known throughout the season he really
- 14:49Speaker 1: doesn't like the opener. He really wants that fresh start
- 14:53Speaker 1: to come out of the bullpen and start the game.
- 14:56Speaker 1: So I think we're still learning what kind of reliever
- 14:59Speaker 1: that Anthony Kaye could possibly be during this postseason. But
- 15:02Speaker 1: he's had such great success against the Guardians this season,
- 15:05Speaker 1: so I'm sure we'll see him multiple times again. I
- 15:09Speaker 1: don't know if he will get a start. Again, we
- 15:12Speaker 1: joked about it. If you just joined us, as again,
- 15:14Speaker 1: I'm Josh Nelson of Sox Machine. We are streaming live
- 15:17Speaker 1: from the Remova Theater for this postgame show as the
- 15:19Speaker 1: White Sox won game one, three to nothing over the
- 15:22Speaker 1: Cleveland Guardians. And with Anthony Kaye, it'd be interesting to
- 15:27Speaker 1: see what his usage is. Because again, he's had a
- 15:29Speaker 1: lot of success. And does Will Venable have confidence for
- 15:33Speaker 1: him to go multiple innings? He didn't have a lot
- 15:35Speaker 1: of confidence in Anthony Kaye at the end of the season.
- 15:38Speaker 1: to face a lineup a third time. So we'll, we'll
- 15:40Speaker 1: see on his usage and with Grant Taylor, I don't know, man,
- 15:45Speaker 1: moving forward. Like what do you do? Like 42 pitches
- 15:49Speaker 1: in four innings. That's awesome. Six strikeouts on 42 pitches,
- 15:55Speaker 1: 34 of them were strikes. And I just loved the
- 15:59Speaker 1: way that Taylor started each at bat with that awesome
- 16:03Speaker 1: curve ball that he was throwing. And just stealing strikes
- 16:07Speaker 1: against the Cleveland Guardians. Now to join me to provide
- 16:12Speaker 1: his reaction to the game is Sox Machines Managing Editor.
- 16:15Speaker 1: It is Jim Margulis. And Jim, welcome to the post-game show.
- 16:21Speaker 1: As you just wrote the game recap for us over
- 16:23Speaker 1: on SoxMachine.com. I already talked about the big plays already.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Murakami's big home run. I want to ask you about
- 16:31Speaker 1: Grant Taylor. All these years of us covering the White Sox,
- 16:35Speaker 1: and again, 13 seasons. This is really our first postseason
- 16:40Speaker 1: wins that we are enjoying here. The Wild Card Series win,
- 16:44Speaker 1: and now the White Sox winning game one of this ALDS.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I don't recall ever a dominant reliever performance like Grant
- 16:52Speaker 1: Taylor in the postseason for the White Sox. There's been
- 16:55Speaker 1: moments where You know, Bobby Jinx has provided moments. We
- 16:58Speaker 1: all remember El Duque getting out of that bases loaded,
- 17:02Speaker 1: nobody out jam in Boston. But Jim, to go four
- 17:06Speaker 1: innings today for Grant Taylor on 42 pitches, scoreless, and
- 17:11Speaker 1: six strikeouts, that is just pure dominance.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, the White Sox haven't had many postseason
- 17:18Speaker 4: wins to really measure it against. Just in general, it's
- 17:22Speaker 4: a pretty narrow field. And yeah, just the way the
- 17:25Speaker 4: White Sox use pitchers, especially now, leaving so many innings
- 17:30Speaker 4: to cover and leaving a closer like Taylor to be
- 17:34Speaker 4: able to cover four innings, that's kind of unprecedented with
- 17:37Speaker 4: the way the White Sox go about it. But yeah,
- 17:39Speaker 4: Taylor really simplified the decision-making at the end of the game.
- 17:41Speaker 4: We talked before about How, you know, would Taylor be
- 17:45Speaker 4: able to go more than two? And I was kind
- 17:47Speaker 4: of like, no, you're not probably not going to burn
- 17:50Speaker 4: him or really extend him that long for a longer series.
- 17:54Speaker 4: But then you watched it unfold and he made it
- 17:57Speaker 4: look so simple that it seemed like Venable would have
- 18:00Speaker 4: been stupid to go to anybody else. You know, career
- 18:03Speaker 4: high four innings, but only 42 pitches. He needed 54
- 18:06Speaker 4: to throw two and a third his last time out.
- 18:08Speaker 4: So like 10 pitches, 10 pitches, 11 pitches, 11 pitches.
- 18:12Speaker 4: He got whiffs on 12 of 23 swings, 7 of
- 18:16Speaker 4: 9 on his curveball. Like he was locating his curveball.
- 18:19Speaker 4: The fastball is more or less a show me pitch
- 18:21Speaker 4: towards the end. And yeah, when it's that simple, I
- 18:25Speaker 4: don't think you.
- 18:27Speaker 4: Take it for granted. I think you're, you ride it
- 18:29Speaker 4: out and Venable had the right idea with having Sean
- 18:32Speaker 4: Newcomb warming, just standing in case Taylor hit a wall
- 18:36Speaker 4: or they started making it difficult on him, but he
- 18:38Speaker 4: didn't really throw one stressful pitch.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I'm now that you mentioned, like I'm trying to like
- 18:45Speaker 1: cycle through.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:46Speaker 1: He just, he was really in command and I don't
- 18:50Speaker 1: know what Cleveland does. Like now you have the off day.
- 18:53Speaker 1: This has got to be in the back of your mind, right?
- 18:55Speaker 1: If you're the Cleveland hitting coach, uh, development staff, just
- 18:59Speaker 1: trying to help these guys get prepared. Cause it's like,
- 19:02Speaker 1: do you really want to go after grant Taylor's curve
- 19:06Speaker 1: ball gym on the first pitch? Cause it was very clear.
- 19:09Speaker 1: That's what he wanted to use was the steel strike
- 19:11Speaker 1: one against the guardians batters is here's his 12, six
- 19:14Speaker 1: curve ball, but nobody really wants to go after that
- 19:17Speaker 1: first pitch. So I'm curious on how the guardians will
- 19:20Speaker 1: counter grant Taylor. if we see grant taylor in game two.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Yeah the uh the plate appearance i'm looking it up
- 19:28Speaker 4: right now to brian rocchio in the seventh inning that
- 19:31Speaker 4: one made me laugh because uh it was after patrick
- 19:35Speaker 4: bailey yeah it was it was after patrick bailey lit
- 19:37Speaker 4: off with a single and i think this is kind
- 19:40Speaker 4: of where you know taylor was just feeling it or
- 19:43Speaker 4: it you know from that point it tilted in favor
- 19:45Speaker 4: of like oh i know what i'm doing here because
- 19:48Speaker 4: you know Rokio for those who don't remember who have
- 19:50Speaker 4: blacked it out, he walked Taylor off twice on fastballs,
- 19:54Speaker 4: two strike fast or one was a one Oh fastball.
- 19:56Speaker 4: The other one or own fastball. The other one was
- 19:58Speaker 4: a two strike fastball and both times, you know, Teal
- 20:03Speaker 4: called for one high trying to be a put away
- 20:05Speaker 4: pitch and Rokio just got on top of it. He
- 20:07Speaker 4: was looking for fastball both times. So what happens here
- 20:10Speaker 4: is Patrick Bailey leads off with a single. First leadoff
- 20:14Speaker 4: runner the Guardians have all day. Up comes Rocchio, who
- 20:19Speaker 4: has beat Taylor twice. Taylor throws him five breaking balls. Like,
- 20:23Speaker 4: just does not give in once. Like, Ron Darling at
- 20:25Speaker 4: one point said, like, oh, now's the time you set
- 20:27Speaker 4: him up for the fastball. And I know I was thinking,
- 20:30Speaker 4: and I saw in our first pitch thread that others
- 20:33Speaker 4: were saying, like, nope, no fastballs. Like, there's, you know,
- 20:36Speaker 4: Taylor was, or Darling was a little bit... out-of-town foolish
- 20:39Speaker 4: of just like, you know, you don't know what's happened
- 20:42Speaker 4: here with fastball usage against Rokio. Don't throw unless you
- 20:45Speaker 4: absolutely have to. If he beats you on a breaking ball,
- 20:47Speaker 4: then tip your cap. But nope, just kept feeding him
- 20:50Speaker 4: sliders or curveballs until he swung over one in the dirt.
- 20:52Speaker 4: And that was like, at that point, you know, Stephen
- 20:55Speaker 4: Kwan grounds into a double play. And then it's just
- 20:58Speaker 4: super simple for Taylor after that.
- 21:01Speaker 2: So.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I shared my reaction, and again, for those that have joined,
- 21:05Speaker 1: I'm Josh Nelson alongside Jim Margulis of Sox Machine. This
- 21:08Speaker 1: is our live post-game show from the Rimbova Theaters. The
- 21:12Speaker 1: White Sox won 3-1, the first game of the ALDS. Jim,
- 21:17Speaker 1: this is obviously a huge win. When we made our predictions,
- 21:20Speaker 1: I picked White Sox in four, but I thought they
- 21:23Speaker 1: would lose today because Parker Messick has been really good
- 21:26Speaker 1: for the Guardians, and the Guardians have been 2-2 against
- 21:29Speaker 1: the White Sox. And now this is five games... that
- 21:33Speaker 1: Parker Messick has started against the White Sox. The White
- 21:35Speaker 1: Sox have not scored more than three runs in any
- 21:39Speaker 1: of these games that Parker Messick has started against them.
- 21:43Speaker 1: But now the White Sox are three and two because
- 21:46Speaker 1: the Guardians just have a terrible time providing run support
- 21:50Speaker 1: to Parker Messick. So I view this as an absolute
- 21:55Speaker 1: huge win. If you're a White Sox fan that's believing
- 21:59Speaker 1: that there's divine intervention right now, that with the Pope
- 22:03Speaker 1: being on the White Sox side, I might be with
- 22:06Speaker 1: you because what an incredible way to start this postseason.
- 22:12Speaker 1: They get a little bit of offense, but today the pitching,
- 22:15Speaker 1: this is three games into the postseason, Jim, and the
- 22:18Speaker 1: White Sox pitching have only allowed six runs so far.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I was not expecting this from this team in the postseason.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Especially since they've had moments where they've looked flawed or
- 22:31Speaker 4: mortal or like their usual selves. Like Hagen Smith, you're
- 22:34Speaker 4: hitting the wall in the third inning with that kind
- 22:36Speaker 4: of command lapse we've seen of just him losing the
- 22:39Speaker 4: ability to throw strikes. Anthony Kaye taking a batter to
- 22:43Speaker 4: get going and having to leave the bases loaded. Jordan
- 22:46Speaker 4: Hicks not being able to finish an inning when he
- 22:48Speaker 4: looks like he's cruising. Like they had opportunities and the
- 22:51Speaker 4: Guardians couldn't capitalize. And same thing with Houston, too. They
- 22:56Speaker 4: had moments where they wobbled, but just because of these
- 23:00Speaker 4: early leads and the White Sox haven't trailed yet three
- 23:04Speaker 4: games in, which is pretty neat.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Isn't that crazy? They have yet to trail in any
- 23:07Speaker 1: playoff game.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Yeah, while kind of stitching together pitching plans as they
- 23:14Speaker 4: go along. Another thing that's fascinating to me here is
- 23:19Speaker 4: the pitching's been effective, but also like the Guardian started
- 23:22Speaker 4: Parker Messick and still they use more pitchers than the
- 23:24Speaker 4: White Sox did in game one. They use six pitchers.
- 23:26Speaker 4: The White Sox use five. So, you know, that's one
- 23:30Speaker 4: way to cut the legs out from under the idea
- 23:33Speaker 4: that because of this starting pitching superiority that Cleveland has,
- 23:37Speaker 4: and I do think they have it. I don't think
- 23:38Speaker 4: this game proves that they don't have it. Like Messick
- 23:40Speaker 4: was tough. Murakami just got them good. But if you're
- 23:45Speaker 4: able to get into the bullpen like that and then
- 23:47Speaker 4: make Stephen Vogt, probably use more relievers than he wants to,
- 23:52Speaker 4: or have to, you know, dance longer than he wants
- 23:55Speaker 4: to trying to figure out left, right, left, right. So,
- 23:57Speaker 4: you know, over the course of innings and ups and downs, um,
- 24:00Speaker 4: you can, you know, make weird stuff happen. And, you know,
- 24:03Speaker 4: the white Sox probably thought they scored, you know, four
- 24:06Speaker 4: insurance runs rather than the one they did with Tommy
- 24:08Speaker 4: fam swing. Uh, but the fact that, you know, they
- 24:11Speaker 4: had that, uh, misfortune, uh, with that double play and
- 24:14Speaker 4: six inning, and then they come back and, you know,
- 24:16Speaker 4: still get a run in the seventh. Like they've been
- 24:18Speaker 4: able to, uh, reclaim that momentum that you think they've lost.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Same thing with like that. My draw Homer of just
- 24:24Speaker 4: like turning around, like they found ways of the pitching
- 24:27Speaker 4: being just good enough, just tough enough when they have
- 24:29Speaker 4: to be. And then the offense coming back and, and
- 24:32Speaker 4: stiff arming, whether it's Houston or Cleveland, just to take
- 24:36Speaker 4: away that second wind.
- 24:38Speaker 1: So the big three for the white socks, Miguel Vargas,
- 24:40Speaker 1: we're going to talk about Kami and Colson Montgomery all
- 24:43Speaker 1: had really good games at the plate. I shared what
- 24:46Speaker 1: the moment of the game was. earlier in the post
- 24:48Speaker 1: game show. And of course that was Muta Takamura commies
- 24:51Speaker 1: to run Homer. I'm just loving the reactions and still
- 24:54Speaker 1: continues to grow is I think people in Japan are
- 24:57Speaker 1: either waking up or they're noticing what happened today with
- 25:00Speaker 1: Murakami is big to run Homer to power the white
- 25:03Speaker 1: socks offense today. What a moment for Murakami and a
- 25:07Speaker 1: fantastic way to start this ALDS for him because in
- 25:10Speaker 1: his first two plate appearances, he picks up two base hits.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Yeah, that was, I mean, he had the two hardest
- 25:16Speaker 4: hit balls of the game. The single was solid against
- 25:19Speaker 4: the lefty, especially like that's, you know, when trying to
- 25:22Speaker 4: formulate a lineup against Parker Messick, and this could be
- 25:24Speaker 4: instructive for when the White Sox face him again, assuming
- 25:27Speaker 4: they do, is that, you know, Venable talked about how
- 25:30Speaker 4: the platoon splits aren't normal for Messick, that he actually
- 25:33Speaker 4: is tougher against righties. And he's still bad at his
- 25:37Speaker 4: share of righties, like Pham and Doyle and such. But
- 25:40Speaker 4: he was like, it took some, it was more than
- 25:43Speaker 4: simple platooning. It took some Figuring in terms of like
- 25:45Speaker 4: how the swings work against pitch shapes and things like that.
- 25:49Speaker 4: And the returns of what the White Sox lefties did
- 25:55Speaker 4: and some of the ugly at bats like Chase Mydroth
- 25:57Speaker 4: had and Tommy Pham had his first time up against Messick.
- 26:01Speaker 4: might change the thinking a little bit in terms of
- 26:03Speaker 4: how many lefties can go against Messick the next time
- 26:05Speaker 4: he starts because Murakami got two good swings on him,
- 26:08Speaker 4: one for a single to center and then one for
- 26:09Speaker 4: that just exceptionally violent homer to right field, which is
- 26:15Speaker 4: always enjoyable in a postseason setting.
- 26:18Speaker 1: He's just an absolute bomb. At first when he made contact, Jim,
- 26:21Speaker 1: I thought it was going foul until then the camera
- 26:24Speaker 1: panned and it was just like, oh my gosh, I
- 26:27Speaker 1: almost had a chance to go upper deck in Cleveland.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Like I thought it was followed too. And I realized
- 26:31Speaker 4: just because normally when you see like the ball, leave
- 26:34Speaker 4: the camera that quick, it's usually because like, it just
- 26:37Speaker 4: took the short route, like just, yeah, just immediately the right.
- 26:40Speaker 4: And like, this is a case of nope. It was
- 26:41Speaker 4: just hit that hard. Yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Again, awesome reaction here. A gutsy send by a third
- 26:48Speaker 1: base coach, Justin Gershley, Jim to send Kyle Teal.
- 26:52Speaker 4: Good one.
- 26:53Speaker 1: I don't know. People are saying it's an excuse me swing,
- 26:55Speaker 1: which maybe it was, but Ramirez is not there. And
- 26:58Speaker 1: a great job of hitting by Colson Montgomery to get
- 27:00Speaker 1: enough on it where it kept rolling down the left
- 27:03Speaker 1: field line. And it really paid off. I mean, if
- 27:06Speaker 1: Hedges holds onto the ball, I wonder if people would
- 27:09Speaker 1: disagree with you, Jim, about sending Teal at that moment.
- 27:14Speaker 4: No, I think with my draft coming up and, you know,
- 27:16Speaker 4: he's facing a righty. the odds of something wonky happening
- 27:20Speaker 4: on that relay, especially like coming off the sidewall, a
- 27:22Speaker 4: weird angle, or like not even a relay, but just
- 27:24Speaker 4: like the throw home from that behind the tarp on the,
- 27:27Speaker 4: you know, left field wall. Like it was a bang,
- 27:30Speaker 4: bang play. So if he's out of the bang, bang play, uh, the,
- 27:34Speaker 4: you know, Teal, like, I guess he was running well
- 27:35Speaker 4: enough to leave no margin for error and the guardians
- 27:38Speaker 4: didn't have any error. Uh, I would take those odds
- 27:41Speaker 4: or that probability better than my draft coming up with
- 27:44Speaker 4: a hit, uh, off a righty who's just coming into
- 27:47Speaker 4: the game to face him.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Yeah, as we look at the win probability for those
- 27:51Speaker 1: that are listening to the podcast, win probability added Grant Taylor,
- 27:55Speaker 1: Mutataka Murakami, Anthony Kaye. As Kaye got out of a jam,
- 27:59Speaker 1: but the big moments again, Murakami and his two-run homer,
- 28:04Speaker 1: Rokio striking out in the fourth inning, and Colson Montgomery,
- 28:08Speaker 1: his RBI double were the three big moments of today's game.
- 28:13Speaker 1: And what a day, what a way for the white
- 28:16Speaker 1: socks to start this man, Jim, it has been a
- 28:19Speaker 1: while since we have felt vibes this good. The Chicago
- 28:23Speaker 1: white socks are three and O in the post season.
- 28:26Speaker 1: And now they have a one Oh lead. They stole
- 28:28Speaker 1: at least one game in Cleveland. And for those that
- 28:32Speaker 1: are watching the live stream, if you want to be
- 28:33Speaker 1: part of the party on Monday, removal is going to
- 28:36Speaker 1: be hosting another watch party. At this moment, I'm just superstitious, Jim.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I have to be here. I don't know if I
- 28:43Speaker 1: can go to any of the home games. If the
- 28:45Speaker 1: White Sox continue to win because I'm just watching the
- 28:47Speaker 1: games at Raymova, I'm just going to have to watch
- 28:49Speaker 1: every game here until the White Sox lose, I guess.
- 28:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm looking it up right now just to confirm
- 28:56Speaker 4: my memory and just determine how the game's unfolded. But
- 29:00Speaker 4: the White Sox, yeah, they were lucky.
- 29:02Speaker 1: They swept Boston in 05, yeah.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Well, no, in terms of like since then, like the
- 29:06Speaker 4: White Sox haven't led a series. They haven't really come
- 29:08Speaker 4: close to leading a series since 2005. Like you have
- 29:11Speaker 4: both the Rays series in 08 and the Astros series
- 29:15Speaker 4: in 21. I guess they led in 2020. They did
- 29:18Speaker 4: lead that series, but nobody is there to enjoy it.
- 29:19Speaker 4: There was no crowd. So that's why it's a case
- 29:21Speaker 4: of like there was no excitement. It was Oakland. Nobody's
- 29:23Speaker 4: in the stands for that year. So it's hard to
- 29:26Speaker 4: count that year. But in terms of like ones where
- 29:29Speaker 4: fans can actually gather and make noise and respond to
- 29:32Speaker 4: a lead like The White Sox lost convincingly against the
- 29:35Speaker 4: Rays the first two games before taking game three. Same
- 29:37Speaker 4: thing the Astros with the Larry Garcia Homer won 12
- 29:41Speaker 4: to 6 but like they were still down to nothing
- 29:43Speaker 4: at the time still had a huge margin of close
- 29:45Speaker 4: and couldn't do it so the fact that they you
- 29:48Speaker 4: know won a series and are also leading a series
- 29:51Speaker 4: here is you know not unprecedented territory but for like
- 29:55Speaker 4: the youngest generation of White Sox fans who can go
- 29:58Speaker 4: to bars and watch it uh They haven't seen the
- 30:00Speaker 4: White Sox lead a series in this kind of setting.
- 30:04Speaker 4: So yeah, it feels, you know, you can say a
- 30:07Speaker 4: long series left a lot of games to play, but
- 30:08Speaker 4: also enjoy it. Like enjoy having a lead because it's
- 30:11Speaker 4: not like, that's the one thing about like the White
- 30:14Speaker 4: Sox being house money is it's one thing for nobody
- 30:17Speaker 4: expect this particular team to do it, but also like
- 30:21Speaker 4: their post-season success is so scant that you can't take any,
- 30:26Speaker 4: postseason win for granted. You can't take a postseason series
- 30:29Speaker 4: win for granted, even if it's the wildcard series and
- 30:31Speaker 4: you can't take a game one victory for granted because
- 30:33Speaker 4: then it's only happened one year, basically.
- 30:35Speaker 1: So I was going to ask, I believe Sean Burke
- 30:37Speaker 1: is going to be starting game two. Has that been
- 30:41Speaker 1: announced yet?
- 30:42Speaker 4: Let me see if he started. I know he's the
- 30:43Speaker 4: bulk guy or like he expected to carry most innings
- 30:46Speaker 4: or pitch the most innings, but. Let's see if they've
- 30:48Speaker 4: announced that.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I mean, this is an, it's an absolute must win
- 30:52Speaker 1: for Cleveland. I don't know. Like if you go down
- 30:55Speaker 1: Oh two at home, I just don't know how Cleveland
- 31:01Speaker 1: wins both games in Chicago. I could be wrong. Like
- 31:05Speaker 1: that is such a critical game. And I wonder in
- 31:07Speaker 1: how will Venable manages that game and just the mentality
- 31:11Speaker 1: that Sean Burke will have going into that game because
- 31:16Speaker 1: We joked about it earlier. The white Sox have one
- 31:19Speaker 1: starting pitcher right now at 11 relievers. Um, but if
- 31:23Speaker 1: the white Sox have had success against Gavin Williams and
- 31:26Speaker 1: if Sean Burke can be nails. into the White Sox offense,
- 31:29Speaker 1: continues to find a way to beat Gavin Williams, especially
- 31:32Speaker 1: the second and third time through the order. Oh, man,
- 31:36Speaker 1: this is exciting times. I can't wait for Monday. Everybody,
- 31:40Speaker 1: enjoy your Sunday off. We all deserve it. Enjoy the football,
- 31:45Speaker 1: I guess. But come Monday afternoon, White Sox-Guardians game two.
- 31:50Speaker 1: That's going to be a great one, Jim. Yeah, the vibes.
- 31:54Speaker 1: The vibes are amazing right now surrounding this team. They're
- 31:57Speaker 1: playing fantastic baseball.
- 32:00Speaker 4: Well, and also, thinking about Sean Burke, the way he
- 32:02Speaker 4: pitched in Houston, and especially watching the ball try to
- 32:05Speaker 4: carry to left, couldn't carry to left, the homers he
- 32:09Speaker 4: gave up in Houston to the hitters he gave them
- 32:10Speaker 4: up to, do the Guardians have those guys? Yeah, the
- 32:16Speaker 4: homer gave it to Smith. That was a blast. Maybe
- 32:18Speaker 4: Joe Adele hit something like that. But I would say
- 32:22Speaker 4: that He shouldn't deviate too far from what he did
- 32:25Speaker 4: in Houston in terms of be on the attack, make
- 32:28Speaker 4: the Guardians hit the ball out. If they do, then
- 32:31Speaker 4: you tip your cap, unless they're just absolute mistakes or hangers.
- 32:36Speaker 4: But just make them hurt you, especially if the White
- 32:40Speaker 4: Sox get a lead early. Just keep that same tack.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Don't worry about three homers and four innings to Houston
- 32:45Speaker 4: because it's two different teams. Houston, that's the one thing
- 32:47Speaker 4: they could do. and it served the purpose well enough
- 32:51Speaker 4: with the White Sox, you know, answering that with the
- 32:53Speaker 4: my draft Homer, but against guardians, if they hit the
- 32:56Speaker 4: ball out, great. But with the one game, you know,
- 33:00Speaker 4: one old lead in the series and with a facing
- 33:03Speaker 4: lineup that has to stitch together plate appearances, more or less,
- 33:07Speaker 4: you know, we saw what the White Sox did. They
- 33:08Speaker 4: got in trouble because they walk guys. So throw strikes. Yeah.
- 33:13Speaker 4: If you give up three homers again, then you can say, wow,
- 33:15Speaker 4: the guardians hit three homers in a game and just
- 33:17Speaker 4: leave it at that. But yeah, Make them prove they
- 33:19Speaker 4: can do it first.
- 33:20Speaker 1: We'll be previewing that game on Monday afternoon leading up
- 33:24Speaker 1: to the first pitch. Again, that will be on TBS.
- 33:26Speaker 1: And if you have HBO Max on that app, you
- 33:29Speaker 1: can watch the game. But Jim and I will be
- 33:30Speaker 1: back on Monday to preview game two of the American
- 33:34Speaker 1: League Division Series. Thank you guys so much for watching
- 33:37Speaker 1: both our pregame and postgame shows as we streamed live
- 33:41Speaker 1: at the Remova Theater during their White Sox watch party. Again,
- 33:44Speaker 1: the vibes are great. The energy was awesome here today,
- 33:48Speaker 1: especially after the fourth inning when Murakami hit that home run.
- 33:52Speaker 1: And everyone is very excited right now on the south side.
- 33:56Speaker 1: And how can you not be? What a great day
- 33:59Speaker 1: for the Chicago White Sox and the White Sox fan
- 34:01Speaker 1: base as they lead the American League Division Series one
- 34:04Speaker 1: game to nothing. But that will do it for this
- 34:06Speaker 1: episode of the Sox Machine Podcast. Thank you, guys. So
- 34:09Speaker 1: much for watching the live stream. If you didn't get
