- 0:54So I guess I'm doing well apropos.
- 0:58I mean, when you're on top, shouldn't you be somewhat
- 1:01cantankerous just saying Dealing with somebody, people have to
- 1:06deal with on an everyday basis. Then, you know, Love it.
- 1:12Love it. So in following suit Omar, how
- 1:15are you today? I'm good.

- 1:26know it is a Bucket Brigade, you say be part of the Bucket
- 1:30Brigade. I mean, we definitely should
- 1:33leave that for him to do. We'll leave the peanut head
- 1:38alone. Clyde, how are you today?
- 1:43Anytime we have guessed, I'm good.
- 1:45That means I hear less from the EP.
- 1:48But, you know, it's a good evening.
- 1:52And, and well. Last but very not least doing
- 1:57his job coming in, just making sure his job gets done.
- 2:02The governor, thank you for joining us today.
- 2:04Are you doing? Just making sure I'm not
- 2:06sounding like like I'm should be in a sick, sick mess hall or
- 2:11something but just getting over the flu right now but I had to
- 2:17be on the show. I was when I heard about the
- 2:20guess I was like oh yes, definitely go down.
- 2:24Going to participate. So very happy to be here.
- 2:27Just like the Jordan Flu Game for you.
- 2:29Oh yeah. Wait.
- 2:33So here's my question. Is because inquiring knows Minds
- 2:38need to know. Did you get the flu shot
- 2:40already? Oh, no, no.
- 2:43Are you a flu shot? Er, no, no.
- 2:45Okay, got it. Who you answering for him?
- 2:49You don't stick your arm out. Because any, yes, sir exact,
- 2:56they've fixed a village in baby. Don't do it.
- 2:59Exactly. All three of them tiles in the
- 3:01middle. A not one of them will have a
- 3:03flu shot. Yep, I don't have mine either.
- 3:08Oh my goodness, because this is what we do in our lives, right?
- 3:15So we've got a dynamic duo. Of course, if you don't
- 3:18recognize these people again for the second week in a row, Are,
- 3:21are you what are you doing? And who lets?
- 3:25So definitely have got One of the best jump coaches Across the
- 3:32Nation internationally, some would argue, and then one of the
- 3:35also best complimentary jumpers to make him.
- 3:38Invest, jump coach and vice versa together.
- 3:42We got Nick Peterson and a Marquise 10d.
- 3:44Thank you for joining us today. Thank you.
- 3:47Glad to be here. Yeah, I know.
- 3:49Right, right, right. Love it, love it.
- 3:53So, that was us being nice. Now, you're an Open Season, so
- 3:58get ready. Buckle up, right?
- 4:03Gentlemen, floor is yours. Every alright I'll start with
- 4:10the with a fun and I think easy one but I just really want to
- 4:15know. I mean it's been no secret if
- 4:18you're a fan of the sport that mr.
- 4:20Denny has had to battle back through some very, very serious
- 4:23injuries. And me personally, I enjoyed
- 4:27watching him this year, you know, be, you know, new top of
- 4:30his game again. And so, from both of your
- 4:32perspective, I was want to know, you know, how this season
- 4:35ultimately felt and About the journey, the long road back.
- 4:42Then I'll start, you know, I would say in a lot of ways, we
- 4:47were happy with this year and then on the same side of the
- 4:51coin, very upset, the one meat that mattered.
- 4:54The most didn't go the way either of us wanted for should
- 4:59have gone and so obviously there's something to that, but
- 5:06from a training standpoint and Denny being back at the top of
- 5:09his game, it was Less is more to be able to, didn't can't handle
- 5:16the same kind of volume and the same type of stuff that he did
- 5:20when he was a young pup. And in those early, you know, I
- 5:24joke. Now that you we do to fly 30s or
- 5:28a 120 Indy, can't do anything for three or four days.
- 5:31He's just, he's just done. Little bit less than make sure
- 6:12that he's healthy. So, that was probably the theme
- 6:15for our year. Yeah, no.
- 6:17Yeah. Excuse me, before Marquis
- 6:19answers. I want you to quit.
- 6:21Stop acting. Like he could have done more
- 6:23than like maybe one more flight. 32 he did a network card.
- 6:26You just mentioned when he was a first got here.
- 6:28So anyway, go ahead. I really only had like maybe 10
- 7:12minutes in total, like even with the extra meets on the side,
- 7:15like you really wasn't a lot if I start from indoor.
- 7:18I had a meeting New York indoor USA's in the worlds and that was
- 7:23a little scratchy. So like even in that in the
- 7:25indoor worlds, I was like, dang I really, you know, I could have
- 7:28performed better if I say you know it's whatever and then come
- 7:30out door with her early world's it just was like I can fit any
- 7:34Meats before USA's USA's was like my second third meet
- 7:37outdoor and that was the most Scratchy.
- 7:39So it was like my entire year that I felt like when I kind of
- 7:43reflect on her back was like damn I just had more
- 7:45opportunities to just kind of be high-stakes Meats like to wear
- 7:49you know that I can have that ability to go out there, get
- 7:51situated jump and then come back.
- 7:53And kind of says it really just didn't?
- 7:55I would just say that we didn't watch it love like just meet
- 7:58them but usually watch a lot of me from.
- 8:00We always watched a lot of me so it's like, kind of like our
- 8:02thing. We kind of go to me, ESS.
- 8:04We, you know, send me make those changes, but a lot of it was
- 8:06just more training, training base, which I My God who loves
- 8:09training, you know, I don't mind that but then but the but the
- 8:14line in me needs to kind of keep soccernet iron kind of pill
- 8:16Scouts back and kind of, you know, get that heart and heart
- 8:19rate moving up and kind of feeling like, okay, there's 10
- 8:22bands online. It's time that you know, it's
- 8:24time to go ahead and kind of get up instead of it being like LSU
- 8:28or like a Collegiate meet where I'm just kind of going to kind
- 8:30of go on the motion. So you know once I kind of
- 8:33realize that you're actually I just needed more more volumized
- 8:35but you know coming off of know her I told my Attending 19, you
- 8:40know, when you get hit with hit with covid and then you have to
- 8:44hurry and Scurry to get ready for Olympics and you have that
- 8:46Olympic drops. It was like a it was a little
- 8:48bit of a lull here and they're kind of fighting do that to
- 8:51which is what I kind of like assess but you know, I'm always
- 8:54hard on myself. I just really felt like you know
- 8:56this season was just a scratch again like I'm kind of I'm back
- 9:01now in that in that mirroring okay know like now with this
- 9:04whole fall training kind of getting back.
- 9:06No Hofstra definitely 100%. I'm back to her.
- 9:09Saying, so now it's just now, it's a big strong, stay healthy
- 9:12in that. Indoor private outdoor apart
- 9:14because again just like how last will 2019, I got hurt my first
- 9:18outdoor so then we had came back from that Achilles all those
- 9:22other things I would just kind of battling up in 2016 17 you
- 9:26know 18 icon. It was a little low 19 I was
- 9:28feeling really good that get hurt again so you know it's it
- 9:31was frustrating in the beginning but I feel like honestly like I
- 9:34just hit All I injuries. Now I know through my labor
- 9:38room, I tore my achilles that sort of idea.
- 9:41Those were literally the most of the the main three things I was
- 9:44bombing when I came to college. So I was like well you know it
- 9:47was it's annoying at insane part but I think what always keeps me
- 9:51you know happy and like glad the fact about you know I can wake
- 9:54up now and like I don't feel like I'm stepping on like glass
- 9:57you know I mean I can you know I can do a whole lunge you know me
- 10:01or I can bend down like 45 degrees and my knees are hurting
- 10:04us. So like so those things that I
- 10:05enjoy But yeah, it's like I'm be I had to get on a knife in my
- 10:09season. You know, people talk crap and
- 10:11all those shoes or whatever like that.
- 10:13But it's like, you know, I know that without those things and
- 10:16impacting me, you know, if, if I was good with those injuries
- 10:18because I'm a tough dude, once it, once he just being fixed
- 10:21now, I know it's just a matter of to get my, get my feet,
- 10:24right? So, you know, I'm now ready to
- 10:26take on that more volume. But this this past year was just
- 10:29a reflection of just not having enough meats and I feel like it
- 10:32was because we were trying to definitely, you know, it's not
- 10:35not not Get back into it. But again, it just was, you
- 10:38know, a lot of this, we're circumstances that were kind of
- 10:40out of my control, you know, I mean, it's hard to fly to or
- 10:45overseas meeting a lot of money and stuff like that.
- 10:47And not, it's not like American meats, you know, anything with
- 10:49American Meats, not the quality, you know?
- 10:51So, you know, it's a lot of, you know, knowing things, I can't
- 10:54control, but really just came down to just more high stakes
- 10:57and meets more meat that I just kind of wanted more volume with
- 10:59that way. I be more prepared just
- 11:02physically, not nothing was mentally but just, you know,
- 11:04because there are times where I'm going to run, Way in my
- 11:07heart is beating. I was on my chest and I have
- 11:09tons of a gentleman and a now over push.
- 11:12And then I keep over pushing in that, take an extra step, but I
- 11:14didn't you take and try to correct it and I'm on the runway
- 11:18I'm not understanding what's going on.
- 11:20It's just a matter of just knowing that okay.
- 11:21Boom. I just needed more morale is
- 11:23high stakes meat, so it just was volume.
- 11:25And I feel like that that's where it came from and I think,
- 11:28you know, you know, kind of going into the next season, you
- 11:32know, obviously, you know being doing Guess I would say decent,
- 11:37I don't think I did that well with finals but you know, we
- 11:40know who will talk about that later but I feel like now you
- 11:42know with everyone kind of like look at me.
- 11:44Oh yeah that guy was a far back again.
- 11:46Now it should be no problem getting invited to meet since I
- 11:48can I have that opportunity again so I feel like you know,
- 11:51I've had to keep proving myself and I can do to kind of like,
- 11:54you know, you get her people don't know if you're currently
- 11:56the don't know if you all the way back yet you come back and
- 11:58then you jump forward, get body and then he's got to go back and
- 12:01go back into the same smooth smooth.
- 12:03And so it just was a matter of meats.
- 12:06So now that knocked out on the getting more meets next year.
- 12:09I don't think it's gonna be any problem.
- 12:12It's it's uncanny listening to you, talk here a lot of
- 12:17parallels between what you accomplished in college and then
- 12:24what happened in your professional career.
- 12:28And first of all, let me just say that you deserve all the
- 12:32credit for being here now because a lot of jumpers would
- 12:38have already called called it a career you already doing Is
- 12:43valued, that is not appreciated, the opportunities are not there
- 12:47so we already know that part of it.
- 12:50Okay. But here's what I will say and
- 12:55this should give you some some energy and some you know
- 13:00optimism is that you have now cleared a lot of hurdles, right?
- 13:07You're 29 years old, okay. Been there.
- 13:10You've done that. Okay, by the way, do you know
- 13:15what you did in college? In terms of the long jump and a
- 13:22triple jump? Do you know what happened?
- 13:2520 years before that You and 868 yeah. 71, yeah, 20 years prior
- 13:36to that, somebody did the exact same thing. how let's, let's see
- 13:42if you, I think, I think I think Do you know?
- 14:17And 1792 in two days at the Juco Nationals.
- 14:23We won't we won't talk about where it was a vesa.
- 14:25Is is I mean we won't go there West Texas.
- 14:30I mean hey you never know but what ended up you know winning
- 14:35some World Championship medals but Your stick-to-itiveness, you
- 14:40know what, what you've done? I see a lot of parallels.
- 14:44I won the majority of my medals after my Prime.
- 14:49Okay. And the thing that you, I think
- 14:52you're understanding now is that it's all good for regular season
- 14:58and all of that, but what really matters is a championships,
- 15:01right? And you stated something very
- 15:04astutely about needing. He's okay, you cannot undervalue
- 15:12The Hope how much it means to get a couple of 840 is under
- 15:17your belt. 8:30 is under your belt.
- 15:19So now you're walking into the Championships knowing you have
- 15:23this done knowing that you've, you know, you've done it a
- 15:26couple times on a bad day and that's where the Championships
- 15:31are won. The Championships are won with
- 15:33the people that have that. Extra in reserve and they know
- 15:37that when they need to call on it either.
- 15:41Okay, so you know I'm very, very happy for you.
- 15:46I absolutely love Monaco that was fantastic.
- 15:49That was super good. So yes, I am following your
- 15:53career. I'm excited for you and 23, stay
- 15:56healthy. I think the plan right now with
- 15:59Nick is, is the planet should be in force.
- 16:04Less is more Make sure that you're ready when it counts.
- 16:08Yeah, man, excited for you. Thank you.
- 16:11Yes. Yeah, foof, like I said, this
- 16:20could be fun. What I've what I've loved
- 16:24watching with YouTube, is the number of things that the number
- 16:31of obstacles that have been thrown you guys as way.
- 16:34And there's never been a waiver. And I always thought that was
- 16:37cool because a lot of times, especially when you're younger,
- 16:42you know, when things don't go well, A lot of today's athletes
- 16:46and point fingers at coaches and don't take blame and all, you
- 16:49know, and all those other wonderful crazy things and
- 16:54YouTube have never seen to be anything other than thick as
- 16:57thieves. And I always thought that was
- 16:58really good. Yeah, I mean, it's it, it's
- 17:04really incredible because I mean, let's just from the injury
- 17:08standpoint and I save it. Wholeheartedly, he believes it
- 17:12from the day, he tore his Achilles, he woke up the next
- 17:15day. and he firmly believed you'd broken the world record
- 17:17nice and it wasn't, it wasn't fake, it wasn't like fake it
- 17:21till you make it and like bravado it was real, you know,
- 17:26and I mean shoot the day I had to pick him up out of the sand
- 17:30pit and put him in a, in a wheelchair at our own, you know,
- 17:34me, I mean that Bond, you know, there's some bonding there that
- 17:40just you don't, you don't get through any other, but Blood,
- 17:43Sweat and Tears, you know, and Yeah, he could have easily just
- 17:47and he never wavered. He's always believed in himself
- 17:50and what he can do and and never wavered it all.
- 17:54It's fantastic. And I'm for sure.
- 17:57And it was funny, is that a lot of it came from, a lot of, it
- 18:01just came out of like, college that I would personally say that
- 18:03we went. I would say that is a lot more
- 18:06turmoil and struggled, like, in our colleges and professional.
- 18:09I got hurt like old times. Like, yeah, but like, it was a
- 18:13lot of times where I just was like, you know, it was a lot of
- 18:15the, a lot of that connection just came from this Mainland
- 18:18college, cuz, and I'm always bring us up Cortana me.
- 18:21I remember what the day was summer of my freshman year.
- 18:25Coach all awake. Me, and he's like, I know you
- 18:29because because my previous goes culture knew he left me, but
- 18:33prior to the Olympic trials in 2012.
- 18:36And this is when I was like, all right, I'm gonna make this team,
- 18:39I'm be the first time be, I'm not on a team.
- 18:41Like, I've had this. When I was born, I knew I was
- 18:44thinking 1819, I'm like, all right, cool, I'm gonna make this
- 18:48team, but I start putting on University of Florida, this that
- 18:51a third and so but II really didn't have like much many
- 18:54coaching there, because they're me.
- 18:55How coach Holly was there? And caused Pearson to my
- 18:57knowledge. Now was there, but in TC
- 18:59uniform. But because I was there but
- 19:01maybe like me to quote always be having really gut got in on the
- 19:06you know on the coaching on the long jump.
- 19:07That's an aspect and now obviously great, it seems our
- 19:10ass Monica, you know? Maybe you know, we moved past
- 19:13that, you know, I said he's going for that conversation.
- 19:26This he just was like look I promise today.
- 19:29We're going to be seeing the coach by campfires, you know, a
- 19:31coach. You know I'm saying.
- 19:32So let me know. And I'll let you go anymore.
- 19:35That's why I said, listen. I was I didn't pick the school
- 19:37to be. I never wanted to be a portal
- 19:40transfer person. How that was from the beginning
- 19:42of two things. I never wanted to be.
- 19:44I didn't one of them. Then we work outside.
- 19:46Never won a person. Just like, I guess get surgery
- 19:49or like I get hurt done enough to get surgery.
- 19:51I don't know why that was in my head, but I'm down.
- 19:53I said, I wanted to like be a person that like transfers, From
- 19:56school to school to school. I never, I was like, if I pick
- 19:59this school, which is why I took so long was like, making my true
- 20:02life. I picked this school, I'm gonna
- 20:04finish out like the entire time. Good bad indifferent.
- 20:08If I put the crack team and I finished whatever that my my
- 20:11education, I'm going to finish it, but I'm not going to be
- 20:13jumping through school. So I was like because I'm gonna
- 20:15be here, um, it's really just a matter of whether or not they
- 20:19can bring the best out of me. And, you know, certain of
- 20:21course, Pearson danns me and he has sent me on a very long
- 20:25message. When he was the teeth you that I
- 20:27ignored that wasn't going is very nice.
- 20:29Message was hey I'm going to use a Universal Florida Gators.
- 20:34I was like, oh yeah. My coaches or like staff was in
- 21:0914 indoors and you know, remember the exact we were three
- 21:16was super sick. We would say it was the girl
- 21:19should have warned me me and Sierra did score at all.
- 21:24It was a bad. It was just bad.
- 21:25Like you don't really? Sobbing like that.
- 21:27First one I cried I saw him crying.
- 21:29I was like, yeah, I've never never ever, ever going to see
- 21:33this defeat like this on all of my evil even ghosts even goes,
- 21:36good cocoa talk. With just like everybody would
- 21:38just not, it was a very low period, I just was like, I don't
- 21:43care what happens after this. It's never like I'm never going
- 21:46to look around and see this ever again and then I think from then
- 21:50on it just with like you know, I ain't that kind of keeping that
- 21:53standard and I think that's what you know, just kind of kept me
- 21:56from Like, you know, like wavering at anything.
- 21:58If I feel like, you know, there's a lot more, a lot more
- 22:00battles. I felt like, you know, said we
- 22:02had to kind of go through, you know, just in college that like
- 22:05anything that kind of came in a professional standpoint,
- 22:07especially with me and like, me being hurt, because I knew I
- 22:11wanted mately, knew that people enjoyed watching me in college.
- 22:15I tell people all the time you're gonna love me now but I'm
- 22:18like stitched up. Let's so you know it just a
- 22:20matter of just getting my body back, you know on on par this
- 22:24condition wise because I mean it would be It was I think my
- 22:28husband's 15 outdoor after I did long jump.
- 22:32I was like coach, I don't even know how I'm going to get you
- 22:35four points. I was like I'm beat he just was
- 22:38like and this is the right after long job so he's like you got a
- 22:42day off. See the trainer's get ride
- 22:45getting into checked in and I just was like coaching I'm never
- 22:48say this but I don't I physically don't know what was
- 22:51going to happen, you know, 1771 and one.
- 22:55So it was like that. Everybody does it was super
- 22:57heavy but yeah I just was like but I was like hey, I did it and
- 23:01this is it we should get the dub, that's it.
- 23:03So it just was a lot of those times where I had to persevere
- 23:07through that turn when he didn't, I say no.
- 23:09I mean, I didn't verbally say, oh yeah.
- 23:11By the way, my knees is falling off the bone and I killings
- 23:14hurts. I just was like, ah, I may be a
- 23:17little sore and I always would downplaying.
- 23:19But you know in the back of my mind, I knew in my head how
- 23:22painful I felt. So I felt like if I could just
- 23:25get this fixed Then I'm going to be fine and I, but I never
- 23:29brought it to. I never wanted to go willy-nilly
- 23:31tonight because my mom's a doctor.
- 23:32She just was like, what? He's doing the surgery, don't
- 23:34ever get it and I just was like, okay, cool.
- 23:36So I would always rehab and get the massage like once it
- 23:41actually, whatever it like naturally goes through and it
- 23:43rips all been okay, but if you don't, I never willingly just
- 23:47was like, Hey I probably should get surgery which it'll probably
- 23:49save a lot of time but I just was a fighter, I always fall in
- 23:52so like you know, that's where it kind of came from that, you
- 23:54know, just kind of stand tall and And kind of like with that
- 23:57combination of collagen, kind of like dealing with the group of
- 24:00guys and I feel like, you know, it's a little rare.
- 24:04Like I mean, you know, I look around you know, recently some
- 24:07some of those same guys that are around now may not, you know, be
- 24:10able to handle it like like like as well as I have.
- 24:13I mean I see a lot of people that was in my class that, you
- 24:16know, did just get like, you know, maybe a minor hamstring
- 24:20thing and they just what I can't, you know I can't do it
- 24:22or, you know, or maybe it's just something that they just, not
- 24:24really progressing the right way.
- 24:26I never really took it as that as okay.
- 24:28Well, you know, I guess, comparing things to others.
- 24:31Always just comparing thing. Just just a cop.
- 24:34I would just say, you know, how much time do I have?
- 24:35Like you know I'm like you know when do I want to be done?
- 24:38I was like you know, 35 36. Okay cool.
- 24:40So you know I'm 26 or 27, I'm doing things better than people
- 24:44who are doing in the world. So you know, I can give him time
- 24:47to catch up as for my body to kind of heal.
- 24:50So I kind of never really had that you know, I guess fear of
- 24:56what Would happen after surgery. It just was, I'm finally better
- 24:59now. I'm finally, like, I feel so
- 25:01much better so I can walk without being in pain or I can
- 25:05get up in the morning and doing jumping jacks.
- 25:09Oh, it was. It was those things.
- 25:10I was more excited for versus the the fear whether or not I
- 25:13can long jump again or do anything athletic.
- 25:16You just was the fact that I actually felt better and so I
- 25:19think that's a lot, a lot of what carried me over to just rip
- 25:22the track and even with just my mentor and then even voice Nine
- 25:26kind of selling that to someone else who's had a similar injury.
- 25:30It's always been really easy for me, because like I said, it was,
- 25:33I would feel elated by me after my patella tendon surgery.
- 25:36I wanted to get up and walk away that right off the right off the
- 25:39bed, like, I was like, all right?
- 25:41Finally, like, my knee doesn't hurt anymore.
- 25:43Like, it doesn't like it. Finally, cool.
- 25:45So, of course, everyone restraining me and kept me on
- 25:48the bed, but I really did want to get up and walk away.
- 25:51Let's all wait a minute. Wait a minute, wait a minute,
- 25:55you referenced. A lot of some things in there,
- 25:58I'll have to ask both the oldest to the the men's horizontal
- 26:02jumps on the world stage. Take a lot of hits right now.
- 26:07Like right the The Narrative out there is that it's subpar.
- 26:13So what it used to be, what do you guys think about that?
- 26:16I know you're working to to disprove that but overall I
- 26:20would have both of y'all. Think about that.
- 26:24I mean, I think, you know, because Holly and I we had this
- 26:27discussion recently to is it, people think that, you know, and
- 26:33the, the mark coach all and I talked about it 8.
- 26:35M people think 8 meters and far he was from 27 feet this far and
- 26:39it's not until we as a, you know, whether a country USA or
- 26:44as collectively as a jumps, we have to decide the point seventy
- 26:48didn't follow, you know, and we've got to start breaking
- 26:51those barriers. Mayors and start, you know,
- 26:54training towards jumping 28 feet and pushing the envelope and
- 26:59making sure that we're leading from that, that this is where
- 27:02we're going and not being just being related.
- 27:04That we jumped 160 and that's never going to get us anywhere,
- 27:07you know. And that was, you know, from our
- 27:11program. We are, we talk about 70 meters
- 27:14isn't far. You know, that's not we're not
- 27:16trying to just jump 17 meters, you know and 60 meters.
- 27:21It's like this magic. The triple jump collegiately
- 27:23right now. It's like everybody.
- 27:24It's like just trying to send 16 meters and it's not hard to
- 27:28jump. 16. Metres, you know, for I think a
- 27:30lot of it is a mindset standpoint.
- 27:34We've got to change our mindset collectively so that we can help
- 27:37the Next Generation. Develop we've got to hold them
- 27:39accountable and and push them to where the horizontal jump should
- 27:44be. Especially with the tradition we
- 27:46have in this country, for sure. I don't get it.
- 27:48I don't envy you one bit. Because, you know, when when I
- 27:55talk to people talk to Young athletes about my era, you know,
- 28:01the fact that carlaandmike were still jumping when I got out of
- 28:07college. I mean it was pretty much set.
- 28:10It was pretty much set in stone that 858 60 wasn't good enough.
- 28:16So you had, you had the greatest duel in the Larger than the
- 28:23history of the event, just there.
- 28:26You could reach out and touch him, you know?
- 28:28And you know, when you watch what's happened over the years,
- 28:33there's been one, you know, we had to divide Phillips Arrow,
- 28:35you had the saladino era, you've had one and maybe two that were
- 28:42in that range, and it's changed now.
- 28:46I mean, so, you know, it's one of those things where You know
- 28:52II feel personally that in order to break through that barrier,
- 28:59you know it will require a man, a moment of Madness.
- 29:05I mean and I don't know, you know for you Marquis if you can
- 29:09remember what happened in that 868 but that you know, I mean,
- 29:16you know, in a nutshell, you know, you could bottle that up
- 29:19and just, you know, It there but it's a different level when
- 29:25you're going eight sixty plus, it's a different level.
- 29:29In terms of speed, it's a different level in terms of the
- 29:32speed of take off your trajectory all of that.
- 29:36And, you know, again, you know, with with Nick.
- 29:40I mean, I understand where you're coming from.
- 29:43And I, as long as you are reinforcing that.
- 29:49You know, hey, 840, no 850, no 860.
- 29:55We need to go that and Beyond. Then, there's a chance, you
- 29:59know? And as long as you're going home
- 30:01after practice, not happy with a decent date, you know, and I
- 30:07tell people all the time, right? Mike, I spent my career ending
- 30:12the year every year pissed off. I never ended a year during my
- 30:18Collegiate or professional season happy because I mean when
- 30:22you're chasing the greatest long jumper ever in the history of
- 30:25the jumps. Yeah it's humbling.
- 30:29You know so I don't envy you because you don't have that you
- 30:33know you are you're trying to create that within your within
- 30:38your own self. Yeah.
- 30:39Trying to figure that out. You know every day in practice
- 30:45Yeah. Yeah I definitely agree.
- 30:48I think I think in it's funny because a lot of people got from
- 30:51me before I think when the standards I guess like when the
- 30:55same as went up. I just was like, I mean you
- 30:57know, it's like and you wrap or whatever.
- 31:03That's ridiculous. I'm just like, I mean 22 is
- 31:10really that far as a reason, why the raising the standards and of
- 31:12course we don't even want to politicking in the rankings this
- 31:15and no one who has the Rings. I'm just like regardless you
- 31:18know, 8 20s really isn't that far?
- 31:21You know, and I remember when it was, I eat 15 pizzas back, I was
- 31:26like 13 and so it was like I was an A, and A B stamping remember
- 31:30stuff like that. So it was just like, you know,
- 31:31just kind of giving I think I think when we finally
- 31:34established that, you know, and stop giving people just I guess.
- 31:37Anybody just opportunity to just exactly beat big nose and be
- 31:41available to computers or checks.
- 31:43I think a lot about issues that people mistake, you know, more
- 31:48participants with more viewership when reality if you
- 31:51have less participants that are actually really really good.
- 31:54But you had that that'll attract more people to view it because
- 31:57there you're actually watching quality people.
- 31:59Yeah, through and through. So I think that's that's what
- 32:03the issue is that that that they're trying to increase
- 32:04viewership by increasing participants or The availability
- 32:08like you know, if you have to have local guy who's you know,
- 32:11didn't really make a varsity track team in high school went
- 32:14to you know Drew Kobe's train all his life he goes to usda's
- 32:18and barely gets on the team. He got Mel, you know?
- 32:21So it's like you know, people want that, you know, people want
- 32:23that you know, like like you know, like that that one Rudy
- 32:26story. But it's not, that's not how
- 32:27title goes. So I feel like you know and then
- 32:30you know there's there's that kind of changing that and then
- 32:33it's also more. So just all the quality guys
- 32:37like you No, like it. If if I were to have it my way,
- 32:40you know, I think, you know, a diamond League or or event with
- 32:45all the guys who have touched 864 always competing together
- 32:49should be a no brainer. It's not, it's not as many long
- 32:51jumpers as there are Sprinter. So I get how, you know, there
- 32:54there could be twenty nine. Nine guys, 98 guy that you got
- 32:58to decipher the who put in. But if you know okay boom he's
- 33:01hit this in his career. He said there's a these times we
- 33:05just want to put those guys around this.
- 33:07The person Circus, you know, I mean, I think that's no
- 33:09politics, no, yeah. You know, from this country
- 33:17let's put him in as a, you guys from our country for the team,
- 33:21you know, for the you know Summit.
- 33:22Now don't do that is if you keep hitting 50 plus at all, you
- 33:27know, I mean, because let's just make it high enough to where not
- 33:30everybody touches 850, lat. If you, if you hit that a 50
- 33:34plus at all, you know, saying you've done in your career, you
- 33:37should be able To go. Okay, boom.
- 33:38These are 89 guys for our diagonally.
- 33:41And then and so and so and then or have it to where you want to
- 33:44get to 89, you got to either outright them or beat them on a
- 33:47head-to-head. And then maybe we'll be able to
- 33:49kind of add you in some him out, but it should just be a solid
- 33:53like, like, you know, it, I can count, but six, or seven or
- 33:57eight guys. That, you know, I've jumped in
- 34:00with that him something 60s or even things like that and so for
- 34:04him to be like, oh, I did, I couldn't get invited to this
- 34:06meeting, I couldn't get it. It's crazy because it's just
- 34:09like, you know, like, you know, and so kind of getting that kind
- 34:13of making it, making it feel okay.
- 34:14Who are the, who are the core guys, who are jumping afar?
- 34:18Put them everywhere. I feel like, I mean, I mean
- 34:20because I mean they do it for the sprinters all the time.
- 34:22So I feel like, you know, it's just a matter of, you know, I
- 34:25guess. Look like you said, mine, said,
- 34:26change and kind of like, you know what I mean?
- 34:28Are I remember when I turned ACC like a dresser, I think that's
- 34:32what I'm always. Yearning to go feel that fight
- 34:35gear - listen times where I felt the same He'd not, maybe not the
- 34:39nothing. Nothing knee lift and not the
- 34:40not the are moving, but it's like something that you know.
- 34:42And then there are times where I do feel like a visitor that and
- 34:46you know, I get out and I'm excited because I felt a little
- 34:48bit of it. I'm kind of getting closer and
- 34:50closer and closer but then you know, it's like, you know, I'm
- 34:52definitely no waiting to steal that same as I fight.
- 34:55I also want to have, you know, again, just because, you know, I
- 34:59know how competition can conduct we bring out the best of you.
- 35:02I want that 2016 Olympic trials, experience.
- 35:06That was my favorite. Competition when I can make with
- 35:09I know you know 836 has six place, it was like
- 35:25that entire field. There was no one's going to
- 35:28bring that up and say you know you know long jump in America's
- 35:31big his bag set for that 16 years.
- 35:33So it's like you know it's like, you know but I mean I just feel
- 35:36like That we can do it there is that?
- 35:39I mean how many we have the Americans and we have even their
- 35:43National athletes. It's just a matter of, you know,
- 35:46one honestly staying healthy and they just kind of getting that
- 35:50Core group of people always, you know, competing with each other.
- 35:53I think Springs always do these hard times because they're
- 35:55always running against someone who is going to be around them.
- 35:58So I mean if we have just two guys that and I'm Lee who could
- 36:03jump over 830 and then you got the rest that are jumping like a
- 36:05toes. It's I mean yeah.
- 36:07It's so exciting. I guess you're a dime league but
- 36:10it's not the same when you know, right after you someone's going
- 36:13to bring 840 and then right before your someone just did it
- 36:17and it's going to be the entire green and now you got to
- 36:19actually like go and wait for the actual reward because so
- 36:22many specific numbers. I feel like when you kind of
- 36:25just can't predict, it doesn't make it as fun either, you know,
- 36:28I feel like if you have it to where it's saying, all these
- 36:31guys are within to 2018 indoor indoor world's, it was too 22 cm
- 36:38difference between first second and third place.
- 36:40It was 846 844 83 and 88 42. It wasn't that was refreshing.
- 36:45And so my stuff like that happens and so like you know and
- 36:49so like you know there there are these moments but then you know,
- 36:52it's like, you know, they want to pause some kind of change
- 36:54things around and kind of make it better for the viewer when
- 36:57it's not necessarily better. For the is not for the viewers
- 36:59for the athletes. And so like you know the the
- 37:02athletes can bring out all the viewership, but I feel like if
- 37:04you if you put us on a higher pedestal you know saying And
- 37:07make it for us. I think that's what what will
- 37:11actually change before, they even change that hold, you know,
- 37:15rhetoric of 8 meters as far. I've, I've heard that so many
- 37:18times, like, people go. Oh, yeah.
- 37:19Job day 10 and, you know, I should be able to get a contract
- 37:22or something like that on the side due date.
- 37:24And it's not not good at all. It's okay to get to se c--'s.
- 37:30Like, that's like, we're gonna go real local, but I mean, I
- 37:33don't know how I got this far, but every time I say something,
- 37:36it's always, you know, your Being cocky or you're doing too
- 37:38much so that that's that is one of the fundamental differences
- 37:43between, you know, the the era in the 90s and into the 2000s
- 37:49where it didn't matter. If I was in Kerala, Italy,
- 37:55little small town or it mattered, or if it was enrolled,
- 37:59it did not matter. If I knew the Pedrosa or
- 38:03Beckford was going to be there, I was going to be there.
- 38:07That is how the long jump I feel is going to to raise its
- 38:13profile. You guys have to jump against
- 38:17each other. You know like the whole point of
- 38:20this whole exercise is that by the time you get to Worlds you
- 38:24should be sick and tired of seeing those guys, right?
- 38:29You should already have enough ammo in the back of your head to
- 38:33know when they're going to make your move wondering what they're
- 38:36going to do first. Jump how you're going to take to
- 38:40knock them off their pedestal, all of that stuff, you know.
- 38:43And I hate it that you know that we're in an era now, where, you
- 38:48know the politicking and all of that is going on and you know,
- 38:51whether it's me promoters that are trying to make sure their
- 38:54guy gets, you know, get some praise or whatever but it's
- 38:58hurting the event, man. I mean, that's it's, it's
- 39:01painful, it's painful to watch, you know, and hopefully like you
- 39:07Come out on the other side, man. I mean because it's the most
- 39:12Amaya trillion is the most beautiful event to watch.
- 39:15It's one of the hardest events to do in track and field and
- 39:18it's the most underappreciated event in track and field, you
- 39:23know, that's very can somebody go down the Cuba into the
- 39:28nightclub and get my man up off the mic and get him back to long
- 39:31jump and police to party. The sport has.
- 39:58Created these tears within itself, it didn't used to exist
- 40:03and there are legitimate second and third class citizens that
- 40:07are Elite and that doesn't make any sense.
- 40:10Like it used to be a gold medalist, was a gold medalist
- 40:14and that was it here. Yeah, and now like literally
- 40:17there are tears, not just Financial tears are always
- 40:20Financial tears, but there's like actually like respects
- 40:24level amount of metal amount of meat.
- 40:27Do you know the amount of exposure we will even allow you
- 40:32to have within the sport tears and that's Insanity?
- 40:37We talked we talked about on the show last time they did.
- 40:40Like I don't know when it went left but it went left hard and
- 40:45and I'm not sure and that's weird for me, but I'm not sure
- 40:50how we get it back. I have ideas, obviously, how to
- 40:53get it back, but the implementation is difficult
- 40:55because we Talk about this on the show a lot.
- 40:59There is no accountability at the exit at the very, very apex
- 41:05of the leadership, because there is no accountability at the
- 41:09belly, like, you guys as athletes globally, can't
- 41:14unionize. So, there isn't like track and
- 41:17field is not a leak, right? Right.
- 41:20Collective bargaining. There's no there's no cvaa.
- 41:23There's no right? Nobody can definitively say what
- 41:27a He'll track and field athlete is.
- 41:29And I have been talking about doing this and I think I'm
- 41:31actually I got a little bit of time before I start heavy, heavy
- 41:35heavy heavy into some things, but I think I'm going to go
- 41:38through it and see, I think I said to Clyde like my idea I
- 41:43think is it's like the PGA Tour. Where if you took the top 20 in
- 41:49the world, they would automatically be card-carrying.
- 41:53A level members of world Athletics.
- 41:57And then 21 to 30 would be will call them taxi Squad members,
- 42:04right? So like if you're 20 20 s in the
- 42:08world, if you get hurt that you're not going to be like, you
- 42:10got to earn your way back right along here, right?
- 42:12But if your 15th in the world and you get hurt like you're
- 42:15automatically back on the scene the following year, but that 20
- 42:19to 30 group is the group that is got that keeps people hungry,
- 42:23you know, right, is that right? Because you can lose, you know,
- 42:26they get to go to Diamond League.
- 42:27And do things, just not every one of them but--, but knowing
- 42:32that number 31 doesn't have a card and he's coming to get
- 42:35yours. That keeps everybody honest.
- 42:38But then you actually have a number, right?
- 42:41So like if your Seb Coe, and you actually were going to go try to
- 42:44sell track and field, you know what your actual, what's your,
- 42:47what's your membership is, right?
- 42:49You can't even, I mean, nobody can tell you how many
- 42:52professional track and field athletes are our It's not a
- 42:55number somewhere, just saying a lot.
- 42:58Yeah, you know, what do you have to make more money than you
- 43:03spend? I have something.
- 43:06So, like someone asked me this question to like I just did some
- 43:09at bar and so I just and I had my spending.
- 43:12I was like well I guess the you become professional when you
- 43:16just learn poisoning or when you participate meets with prize,
- 43:20money involved. And they paid for some type of
- 43:23airfare for you or some work like that.
- 43:26That's the only that him. So he just was like wow.
- 43:27That's my fate was like well I mean that's go to me.
- 43:31I'm going to want meat and get 2000 or I can go to London meet
- 43:34and get 3. Thousand.
- 43:35So I can't sit there and say each meat is worth this amount.
- 43:38It's just a matter of I went to the meat because I got invited
- 43:41and that means I'm professional but and I said the money and he
- 43:45just was like, so it's not like a, you know, I guess you kept
- 43:47trying to compare it to football.
- 43:49I was like, so don't do you guys get it?
- 43:51Get a game check. You guys have dirty sales.
- 43:53I was like, that's the point point, right?
- 43:56Because it's because there's no actual professionality and it's
- 44:00not a league and there is no defined membership, goes all the
- 44:03things that those are all revenue.
- 44:04Dreams that can't exist because who wants to buy something
- 44:07that's ambiguous, right? And they don't lie.
- 44:10Now literally just throwing money up in the air and watch
- 44:13the sea mind around kiss. My people on the panel know more
- 44:16about track and field than anything.
- 44:17And there's a lot of it that none of us can understand how is
- 44:21the general has the general public population to post to
- 44:25understand how track and field works when we're all trying to
- 44:27figure it out. How it's changing speci, 1819
- 44:30events specifically, I guess, how do you find someone who's
- 44:33only Sign of, you know, pole vault and then make the be a
- 44:37failure of the 10,000 and then, you know, do you know do you
- 44:41know what track and field was? Like when it was not
- 44:46professional, not a wall. So I remember I talked to my
- 44:50aunt some like my Aunt Sarah, she was like sheer a
- 44:54professional for a little bit, you know.
- 44:56And she she explained to me, I guess like I guess a brief
- 45:00interaction where I guess it was just more so I wouldn't say it
- 45:04was I want to say like less stressful, but it wasn't like
- 45:09like, you didn't, I guess when you got like after the meat,
- 45:12they actually paid you in cash or something like that.
- 45:14Absolutely. It wasn't like, it wasn't like
- 45:18you had. So, you know, imagine imagine.
- 45:22Imagine this scenario. It would give it to you.
- 45:26Imagine this scenario, you get on the plane.
- 45:29You started your first meet. You got three meats in 10 days,
- 45:33right? Get to you first.
- 45:34Meet your agent, collects your travel money, right?
- 45:38So that first meet is 500 bucks. You collect your your payment
- 45:45after the meet to three in the morning in line at a dark room.
- 45:50And there was a gentleman's agreement that the minimum you
- 45:54could make was a thousand dollars.
- 45:57Minimum. Okay, let's say you fall out,
- 46:01you're still getting $500. Okay cash.
- 46:06Yeah, you get on the plane. You go to your next meet $500.
- 46:10I travel. Okay, then you get paid that
- 46:16meat right, by the time you get to the end 10 days, you've
- 46:20collected cash but three meats. Are you heading home and you're
- 46:25nervous as hell Marquis, how much cash are you allowed to
- 46:33bring into the United States? How much?
- 46:38Nope. It's lower than that.
- 46:40Now listen, 9999 99 Cents, you can bring more Lego, so you
- 46:49can't bring 10,000, no? Okay, anything less than 10, but
- 46:53you can't bring 10 or anything law.
- 46:55He will tax you at the airport right there and then at the
- 46:59airport. Yes, absolutely bang.
- 47:03So if you were, if you try to bring a hundred thousand dollars
- 47:05into the into the country and they busted you they would take
- 47:0830 Five thousand dollars of that.
- 47:11That day right there, right there.
- 47:13And then thanks, I was going to say, tell them how to tell
- 47:20Marquis how you guys got it in. This is the best part for me
- 47:25shoes shoes. I put neath the webbing in your
- 47:31in. Yeah in your luggage.
- 47:33I push I think 8,000 or 10,000 dollars split into two five
- 47:37thousand dollar Stacks underneath the The insole of my
- 47:41of my Nikes. Yeah, or they weren't my Nikes
- 47:44actually enjoy your elevator shoes as yes, I wish I was
- 47:49taller. It was there was one particular
- 47:52year. I figured out that as long as I
- 47:55was coming back from a major championships, I guess I was
- 47:58just coming back from Goodwill. All right, go through or coming
- 48:02back from Worlds. So I just make stuff up, but
- 48:06that's how it was. And I hate that you're going
- 48:10through it now or you're going through is is there has there
- 48:15been any Clarity on how long track meet can take to pay you
- 48:21after you've completed? So I actually lie so because I'm
- 48:26always late and getting all my payments.
- 48:29I think it's personally to me on there was this but like
- 48:31everything else but I personally thought I saw you And so, what
- 48:41the issue is, and this is for Verbatim.
- 48:44What they were telling me that we're at Lenox actually has no
- 48:47control over when they send any funds out.
- 48:50Well, I love them like not, not a, not anybody's mean.
- 48:53I'm really not know me true or not true agent.
- 48:55No one who has the primary control is a IU.
- 48:59CA IU the and anti-doping. So, pretty much essentially is
- 49:04what they like, how their what their message is and it's Easily
- 49:09painfully like not logical to me in a fur business a point and
- 49:14I'm not in the business major, I'm just you know just
- 49:17street-smart like this is stupid.
- 49:18So what they do is they wait until they test everyone.
- 49:24So I save you got to meet. So like for example changes,
- 49:26they'll they'll test people the week prior to World
- 49:30Championships during World Championship and the week after.
- 49:33So like those three weeks. And so, once all three of those
- 49:36weeks of all those texting testings are I've done no matter
- 49:40if it's they could have tested the same athlete.
- 49:42Three times, two times, one time or just random athletes at all.
- 49:46They wait till all those collections are done and then
- 49:50and then they go out and go through.
- 49:53I guess in alphabetical order name place and all that stuff
- 49:58and then they give out and then they go to okay.
- 50:00Well did you ask to get it sent to you, which are your agent.
- 50:03And so it's like it's a very, very long slow process.
- 50:05And so when I asked them I said okay well Just for, you know,
- 50:10just glad I go to a meeting. So I asked him some time with.
- 50:12Hey, look. So why don't why?
- 50:14Why I've not a process in which, you know, you can, you know, I
- 50:17guess pay the athletes. Like, right away.
- 50:20I said to me, but I'll testing, but, you know, still test and
- 50:24then with the comes back, any type of - I like that, you know,
- 50:27recoup it and find them, you know, obviously go along with
- 50:30the same band stuff. Maybe say, hey, look, maybe
- 50:33maybe when they re re, you know, so we're going to give you a
- 50:35lifetime ban until you give us back this prize money and the
- 50:39fine. And then you're in here, band
- 50:40goes to whatever. Four years, 22 months because
- 50:43your extension of like that whatever goes on.
- 50:45But to withhold the money on people who have always in
- 50:50positive never have ever cheated because the possibly of someone
- 50:54else could be cheating. We have how it could mess up the
- 50:57flow of money and stuff like that but it but if your issue is
- 51:00like not paying someone 70 grand, when you win second
- 51:05place, should have gotten that extra whatever the difference
- 51:07is. I get that Hard to kind of get
- 51:09that good for one else, but there's be consistency plans for
- 51:14when someone does test and you're trying to pay out people
- 51:16because this this is an awesome. So I always say I was bringing
- 51:19up my yeah. So you know imagine you working
- 51:21a job, you work entire year, they pay you.
- 51:23So next year and no one and everyone goes more than this.
- 51:27Isn't that the same thing? I so yeah.
- 51:29But that's what I like when I was born.
- 51:32I didn't think. Okay, I'm going to start this to
- 51:35like, do this track and field thing.
- 51:36I just know, I just know like you know what?
- 51:38The basic Ways of the world is you work?
- 51:40You get paid, unless it's slavery.
- 51:42So I'll let you do. This is a reaction to the amount
- 51:47of drug positives, especially the ones that have come 5, 10,
- 51:5315 years later down the track. When they are holding the
- 51:57samples and trying to figure out, you know, how they're going
- 52:00to get ahead of the game, you know, and this and it's not fair
- 52:03to you, it's not fair to you, God knows.
- 52:07I've been there. I've missed a couple House
- 52:09payments. Because of that.
- 52:10Like, it's not fun, it's not fun to deal with.
- 52:14So, yeah, that's, that's, there's, there's still have a
- 52:19long way to go. Yeah, smooth out the edges.
- 52:23What do you think of the final three?
- 52:27Like that little like coat. Like that little like after only
- 52:31three people get the next to the basket.
- 52:33After the fifth round. Yeah, that's stupid again,
- 52:36smurfin, it's stupid. Question are things at the end
- 52:43of the world's, I saved, please take out, like, I apply my name
- 52:46to the, the guy with the black hat and Ricky's dendy.
- 52:49No, that's me, I'm telling you, that this is, this is very poor,
- 52:53it's very poor. I would have put a whole note in
- 52:54the back. I said, listen, I I get how you
- 52:58again, like, just trying to make it entertaining for people who
- 53:02are watching or first-time viewers I get out, but even if
- 53:05you, even if I do, get it on a 1% level, it's not doing
- 53:08anything. I guess for the, for the Leti of
- 53:11the of the jump. Like, you know, I mean I've you
- 53:13know, we always are thing is last one best one and so, you
- 53:16know, I don't wanna say that I'm doing my last jump and if I
- 53:19somehow some, which way, you know, get pumped out of that top
- 53:24three, you know, right before it's my time to act dumb and
- 53:27it's like, well, you know, I don't get a chance to actually
- 53:29respond. Yeah, top of that.
- 53:31I also don't like how, you know, if you're in first you now
- 53:35because I'm first. Yeah, that's awesome.
- 53:38That was the stupidest reaction. Change of all of the Dome
- 53:42reactionary changes. They've made that was weird
- 53:45because because because again and it just reminds me of the
- 53:48time because in 2018 they it was, this is an indoor.
- 53:51It was actually they try to implement this at Worlds, where
- 53:54it was like, only the last. So like it was the last four
- 53:59people got to do their last four jumps but then only the people
- 54:03got 50 40. So I was So I jumped into like
- 54:15third or something like that he dropped into second, I jumped
- 54:17into second and then I have to jump right away.
- 54:20I have a jump again because I jumped.
- 54:22So I went from a place and then I'll because I'm in like right
- 54:30away and so I was like, this isn't good.
- 54:33I mean you know and then on top of the same time.
- 54:36So I got to wait to is like, you know, it was really bad.
- 54:39So I never I never I also hate it when they changed it, taking
- 54:43this from a minute to 30 seconds.
- 54:45That was expedient. My entire routine.
- 54:47You know, it again, they're they're doing a whole lot to
- 54:50change it for the wrong people, you know?
- 54:53I mean and I get like I said like if you look at it from
- 54:56outside and people who aren't athletes that are just guys who
- 54:59are just thinking, okay, you know, how can we get?
- 55:01So I can feel more exposure. They just go.
- 55:02Okay, we got to make it more exciting.
- 55:04When you did not ask me that is either done this for it or just
- 55:08you're either really like a real true fan of sports.
- 55:10Really watch. What's going Go on because you
- 55:11wouldn't have changed in first place.
- 55:12Because this is a, no, this isn't about changing how the
- 55:16competition works. It's just say to you, to either
- 55:18the quality or just, I guess just be making it more
- 55:23available. There's so many Gio's
- 55:25restrictions on track meets and that's more of the problem.
- 55:28My tracking abilities, and getting more exposure in the
- 55:30first person. It is taking our last two jobs.
- 55:34So I feel like, you know, I can't even read.
- 55:36I can't even watch like, well, I guess retweeted track me and
- 55:39Monica was difficult. Even watch me.
- 55:41Me you know me. I just was like, yeah, this is
- 55:44crazy. So you know stuff like that.
- 55:46So we're you know if they kind of go go in as again it's just
- 55:49all money in politics. But you know, it's just it's
- 55:52hurting the sport more than they're thinking that they're
- 55:54actually helping and is that her and athletes.
- 55:56A lot of athletes are way more frustrated, especially, where a
- 55:59lot of these new, you know, new age athletes that are coming in
- 56:01like a lot of people in my class conscious, you know, we just
- 56:05kind of hard to see, just kind of go with the flow type of
- 56:07stuff, but I'm always new people in.
- 56:09He's like younger classes that are coming.
- 56:10Out of college. I'm just like expansion.
- 56:12They're just like this is crazy man.
- 56:14I can't believe this is what's going on.
- 56:16You know. We got to do something about my
- 56:17yeah. We've been there done that.
- 56:19We felt you about three or three or four years ago.
- 56:21We tried it. We just saw your list, it's a
- 56:23way to bigger it is, it's bigger for us, it's not enough.
- 56:27People who aren't athletes. I mean he beat me.
- 56:30We got a train. We can't focus too much on, you
- 56:33know, to me, I guess your things.
- 56:35You know, we have about 44 weeks outside the season doesn't
- 56:38really be like change tracking. Ulam and faltering starts and
- 56:43then we're right back to the right.
- 56:44We got do. So yeah it's super annoying and
- 56:47it's just like hard because you know like and even with with me
- 56:50like I've tried to like even get just more viewership with per
- 56:55person. As far as I felt like a lot of
- 56:57times like going to do in the cold a time.
- 57:00You know, I would value and come talk to a lot of the other album
- 57:02American athletes to kind of get on, you know, just kind of being
- 57:05able to kind of I guess create like a track-and-field channel
- 57:10per half. Beat to where you would watch
- 57:11them, you know, train work out, you know, where they had, I had
- 57:14a trained group, you know, they could come on fan to watch your
- 57:19entire group of stuff like that to kind of get you more at least
- 57:22getting to understand, like, you know, your training side of it.
- 57:24Kind of like, I think a lot of times people just see people
- 57:27line up on, you know, all on the runway or on a, you know, sit on
- 57:31the 100-meter dash like that, you know, we know the actual
- 57:34person behind them, but behind the blocks, they just think,
- 57:39okay, you know, that person wants to win.
- 57:41And but meanwhile, you have no idea like that guy's homeless,
- 57:44and he's, you know, you've been training since whatever whatever
- 57:46is Mommy and passed for that. Like, you know, everyone had a
- 57:48story and so not only knows those stories and so that kind
- 57:51of gets pushed away the side if you're not doing very well.
- 57:53So I felt like, you know, as athletes, we can kind of do
- 57:56better to kind of curl. I guess get more fans and kind,
- 57:59of course, it's by 2 pi by promoting ourselves, but it's
- 58:02only but so much. We can do when you have, you
- 58:04know, kind of like an entire organization.
- 58:07Not really doing much of anything to really make us make
- 58:10It better and it's super annoying than a lot of guys just
- 58:13kind of give up and kind of move on and kind of go.
- 58:15Okay, you know what, I'm put my head down and just win medals to
- 58:18get the exposure but it's kind of where I'm at.
- 58:20I mean I just kind of I no longer was difficult.
- 58:23I know it's hard to kind of get that but y'all going to watch me
- 58:25if I jump 870 bucket hat my hat backwards or do something like
- 58:35that? So Fade Out mentally and not
- 58:43just physically. A lot of people just kind of
- 58:45leave the sport just like mentally strong on versus
- 58:48physically. So, you know, it can get
- 58:51definitely definitely context think well.
- 58:55So you've talked about a lot about viewership and being seen
- 58:59and what not. And that's been the reference
- 59:01for most of this conversation. So we're going to go in a
- 59:04Direction so neck and asked you first Jump coaches Mount
- 59:09Rushmore. Who do you put up there so it's
- 59:12a good representation. Is this a lengthy?
- 59:16Double-a level? Right.
- 59:17As you double-a level? Yes.
- 59:19Yes, sorry so I mean I have to put my mentor on course, Gary
- 59:26Pepin. I've always really respected
- 59:28what he's done and he certainly on their boots.
- 59:32Jack Snyder. Definitely on there.
- 59:36I would have to put dick booth on there.
- 59:39Clearly what? He did, a terrible job was and
- 59:42then my fourth one. Is the guy who I don't think it
- 59:46gets much credit, but Joe Walker.
- 59:49You know, he, whether it's Britney or Stringfellow or he
- 59:53was always pretty cool. Always did a great job.
- 59:56So, you know, those are the four people.
- 59:58I always looked up to, and and I've always tried to emulate and
- 1:00:03be like, so those are the, the mount rushmore's for me.
- 1:00:08So Marquis, same question your your tier who are the four NCAA?
- 1:00:14The jumpers that you would put on the month, Mount Rushmore to
- 1:00:18represent the jumps. So jumpers, G Legend, asked
- 1:00:22coaches. I wouldn't
- 1:00:38Phone numbers. Let's see if your history.
- 1:00:44I was going to say if you need help.
- 1:01:32You got at least get just one obvious.
- 1:01:35One got to just come with right now.
- 1:01:36Let's go. I'm not helping you out.
- 1:01:41Either. Imma watch.
- 1:01:42It's like, you take. I don't know where we're going.
- 1:01:43Imma watch this is hilarious. This is, this is good.
- 1:02:10You're getting an inside view of the coach athlete relationship
- 1:02:13right now because he is, he's gotten history, lesson, invent
- 1:02:18tent video of multiple of these people.
- 1:02:21And, no, I just, I like you right off the top.
- 1:02:26I'm not a history buff. I'm just like history, like
- 1:02:29Destroyer like it. My name is out there.
- 1:02:30I kind of don't care. So fun.
- 1:02:44So I again, so this this may not be anybody's particular Mount
- 1:02:51Rushmore of the men's long jump that the NCAA, but the list
- 1:02:56might matter so I'm gonna give him list.
- 1:03:00Yeah, fourth place on the list is Kevin Dilworth from Abilene
- 1:03:08Christian 8. 47 third on the list, Melvin Lister Arkansas,
- 1:03:17849 second. Ironically on the list Kareem
- 1:03:22Street Thompson of Rice University at 8:56 and then the
- 1:03:28record is 874 by Eric Walter Walter Walter, at UTEP tonight,
- 1:03:34you to Arkansas with, with the, with the are Officially
- 1:03:40generated 2.0 and that they had, it is a 2.0.
- 1:03:45Perfect went, there you go. Yes, it is absolutely to be
- 1:03:50fair. He is tied for fourth on that
- 1:03:53list with mr. Dilworth at 8:47, yes.
- 1:03:59I don't have an Wednesday. I want I want to hear what the
- 1:04:12rest of the panel gives us an answer to the question, you
- 1:04:15asked Nick Come scotia's. Just coaches Mount Rushmore.
- 1:04:20I'll make it simple. Nick actually got the exact for
- 1:04:23that. I had in mind.
- 1:04:25Those are my four so it was it was boobs.
- 1:04:28Pepin, boom, Booth happened, Booth dick, booth, and, and Joe,
- 1:04:37Walker and Joakim. Okay?
- 1:04:41You want me to go, who's yours? This is part of what I was.
- 1:04:46We were yelling about today. I think you were yelling me.
- 1:04:52I was And I have done this revolving
- 1:05:25door round-robin on the, on the fourth head, a multitude of
- 1:05:30times today and I knew I would have won a lot of money that you
- 1:05:37put coach Pepin on there by the way.
- 1:05:40And that's not a diss, their loyalty.
- 1:05:45And I have a great deal of respect for Coach Walker but I
- 1:05:52think my fourth one might actually surprise you and I I
- 1:05:56fought with this a lot today because this coach is kind of in
- 1:06:01the middle of things and there's still a lot to do but just based
- 1:06:06on PBS of what they've coached. It might very well actually be
- 1:06:10unique. Hmm.
- 1:06:12And I said that earlier today is Is that I'm always leery of
- 1:06:18putting people on Mount Rushmore, is that are they got a
- 1:06:21whole lot more stuff to do? But if you just look at the
- 1:06:24peavey's of the people, you've coached both genders and
- 1:06:27horizontal jumps kind of hard to not put you on there.
- 1:06:34I appreciate that. I mean, it's, it's funny cuz and
- 1:06:37to Lucius down there, we'll, we'll grin at me because he's
- 1:06:40constantly challenging me. Never yelling, never yelling
- 1:06:45silence and no, no, no. You know, I appreciate that and
- 1:07:05when you've got time for the athletes and you work hard and
- 1:07:08put them in the right place, it's things things.
- 1:07:11Work out well for you. EB cannot cannot sell the
- 1:07:14truthful statement. Yeah, he didn't put himself
- 1:07:19there so I instantly moved him to number five.
- 1:07:25It's funny cuz I don't know, you know, I'm a lot like my father.
- 1:07:36My father doesn't talk much. He's very humble.
- 1:07:39He built himself a business and he I won't tell anybody and I
- 1:07:44don't know if I don't have a maybe my ego needs to get back,
- 1:07:48get bigger but I don't know. I asked the question.
- 1:07:52Can you put yourself on that list and I can't, I'm happy that
- 1:07:57others would consider that and I'm honored but I can't put my
- 1:08:02hygienist. What are the other things I was
- 1:08:04being yelled at me today? I feel like because, you know, I
- 1:08:10feel like there should be a photo shoot.
- 1:08:12Shoot. Where you know, you take, you
- 1:08:17know, the team trophies per se, but to represent every Champion
- 1:08:22or Podium winner that you had take the pit, take the picture.
- 1:09:06Well, dick booth. Unquestioned mean that, that era
- 1:09:13at Arkansas. Mean never be challenged.
- 1:09:19I doubt it that, that was That was insane, huh?
- 1:09:49And you know, you can say what you want about me.
- 1:09:55Literally the only person that he has on this list is Carl.
- 1:10:00But I mean Leroy I jumped lie right down there too.
- 1:10:03Yeah. You know I knew right hand.
- 1:10:05Yeah so and Leroy has a has a very slightly windy 28 footer.
- 1:10:10Yes that Provo. Utah College up in Provo and
- 1:10:15Provo. Yeah, Dean Hayes.
- 1:10:18I mean the man coast until he died.
- 1:10:22Yeah. Cat a really high level at a
- 1:10:24really high level. And then number four I want to
- 1:10:31go Homer when young yang go Shang if Nick if you knew.
- 1:10:40If I was if I could sit down with you have a drink and
- 1:10:46explain to you what this man did with nothing and I'm talking
- 1:10:52about not talking about Green hurdles or sleds or like this
- 1:10:57man would just Make stuff up. Get serious.
- 1:11:03No, no. I experienced that firsthand.
- 1:11:06Yes. That's like, we're doing what
- 1:11:08Korean? Yes.
- 1:11:09And we're bounding up one level of the of the honor of the
- 1:11:14on-ramp at the football stadium. Yes.
- 1:11:18What? Yeah.
- 1:11:20Well because Koh Chang. Got some.
- 1:11:23Somebody surfaced just one level.
- 1:11:25Yep. Yeah.
- 1:11:28Hey if this man had had a chance to work with other jumpers of my
- 1:11:34caliber. Oh my goodness.
- 1:11:36This is no question. So that's that's my top for like
- 1:11:41it. I got it.
- 1:11:44I only have one, very, very quick.
- 1:11:45Exit question for dendy. Before they go does then he do
- 1:11:49you know where you are on that list on Sunday?
- 1:11:54A all-time list. Do you know where you are?
- 1:11:56No, damn it man. You're 13, but tied for 30th.
- 1:12:42Wherever I fell on all time list.
- 1:12:44I didn't, I just was like, I want to be the best so I went
- 1:12:47and did that. So yeah, that's that's oh yeah,
- 1:12:49I never really know. I should know, ever know any of
- 1:12:51my stats now. I think about it.
- 1:12:53I only know pb's because I write them when I signed them.
- 1:12:56Like, people come to your dime, lean meats, and they're just,
- 1:12:59they have a ton of photos and they just like walk and follow
- 1:13:02you everywhere. Wow, it's crazy.
- 1:13:06I can't leave built a Dandy. I hate to bust your bubble.
- 1:13:09You have another 40 Years of that.
- 1:13:11Yeah, no, no. Look, they still slick.
- 1:13:15This, they find me. I've moved like regular emails,
- 1:13:18I get ya quests. Like once a month, is that what
- 1:13:22happened for the rest of your life?
- 1:13:25They would send. I don't know how they got my
- 1:13:27address. They sent me like my photos, my
- 1:13:30house. It was like, he saw this any
- 1:13:32serum. Like your, what the hell's going
- 1:13:33on? So, yeah, it's crazy.
- 1:13:40So yeah, so I don't really know. TV's.
- 1:13:42Unless, when people say what I'm about to get announced, my one
- 1:13:45is all Marquise, then, D, like seventh.
- 1:13:47I mean, come on, Mary Cain, and so, I did that, because I really
- 1:13:49like, I'm just a person, like I treat track how track truth.
- 1:13:53People tracking fields are very much, what have you done for me
- 1:13:56lately sport. So you know, I just I'm always
- 1:13:59high. My latest is what I am and so I
- 1:14:02got to keep making it better. I keep trying to reset that
- 1:14:04every single time. So yeah, I mean, it's cool.
- 1:14:07Like I mean, it's like unless someone tells me or a lie,
- 1:14:11Drives my memory. Remember, I'll just keep it.
- 1:14:15I just know that I want to jump 8:08 68 and I want to jump
- 1:14:18further than 871 as long as you so I don't see those two numbers
- 1:14:21869 or 872 up. I've no idea.
- 1:14:27Oh, of course. Oh well yeah.
- 1:14:29But you gotta make that one step past another, one very quickly,
- 1:14:36you just got to do it at first time and I'd buy it.
- 1:14:39But it always takes the techniques of long.
- 1:14:41It's going from Like a large BB again.
- 1:14:44So I'm nervous that it might in my career that you know, after I
- 1:14:46pee VIP be to get very very quickly, it's just a matter of
- 1:14:50just PB and then you're being kind of Gonna Roll.
- 1:14:54We just gotta keep feeling that feeling.
- 1:14:56So once I get to that 869 then 80s anymore record comes out of
- 1:15:00that. So well ya know what you want to
- 1:15:08do need to do and should do. We're going to let you go.
- 1:15:11To sleep and dream about that and just no school.
- 1:15:23Yeah. So, you know, I can get I get to
- 1:15:25wake up at like 11:30 if I guess I still get my I can still get
- 1:15:28my 10 hours sleep, got it. Well, thank you so much for two
- 1:15:34of you definitely for taking the time to come on, and share some
- 1:15:37ideas and and having a little bit of fun.
- 1:15:40Hopefully it was fun for you. But enjoyed it.
- 1:15:43Awesome, awesome. Well I will make sure to get the
- 1:15:45link. I think we know a guy that knows
- 1:15:47a guy that can get you the links to the show.
- 1:15:49But other than that, enjoy yourselves this evening and
- 1:15:52we'll talk to you again soon. Thank you.
- 1:16:05Well, Man, that was some personality.
- 1:16:12No wonder the bucket hat works, right?
- 1:16:14Just rails and then even more. So definitely it's better on him
- 1:16:17than on the EP just tonight is my night.
- 1:16:23I will just accept that tonight. It's all just sort of absorb the
- 1:16:28love. Well, you know, we did dedicate
- 1:16:30most of the show to Our Guest this evening and opening up that
- 1:16:33can of worms of things that we wanted to make sure that we got
- 1:16:36to the Audience. But if you all haven't been
- 1:16:41noticing and I'm not sure how you haven't, if you, if you paid
- 1:16:44attention to show long enough, this Carousel that we call
- 1:16:47declare coaching, Carousel is off the chains again, Noted on
- 1:16:56this current date that we are recording.
- 1:16:58It is October 12, and there have been moves significantly,
- 1:17:03significant insignificant, but significant enough, In the last
- 1:17:07five days. Yep.
- 1:17:10Unreal unreal, so I'm going to go for it.
- 1:17:15Yeah, leaving the individuals out of it.
- 1:17:19I just I find it. God, I find it unprofessional
- 1:17:25that we are still making hires at this date and that's not, you
- 1:17:30know, people that are getting new opportunities like that's
- 1:17:32dope for them and I'm excited for them.
- 1:17:34Hell, I know a lot of those people personally, but I just
- 1:17:37don't understand from an administrative standpoint like,
- 1:17:40what world were living in? Where people are being hired,
- 1:17:42two new jobs, six weeks, seven weeks, eight weeks into, what
- 1:17:47should have been training already?
- 1:17:49Like this, can't be good. You know, for anybody, let alone
- 1:17:54the athletes by even if your new coach is though, and in some
- 1:17:57cases they are like, what kind of, you know, mental, you know,
- 1:18:03Madness are these athletes having to deal with, with all
- 1:18:06these super late moves and, you know, spinning of the of the
- 1:18:10last year's carousel right now. I think I hear you but like,
- 1:18:17it's not great for the athletes that are losing coach.
- 1:18:21So, Pretty good for the ones that are getting one because it
- 1:18:23didn't have one. Sure.
- 1:18:26But you understand say, well, I do.
- 1:18:28I do, I'm saying. Okay, my thing is, this is like,
- 1:18:31it just again speaks to the blatant disrespect or lack of
- 1:18:37respect that the people have for what we do.
- 1:18:41Yeah. Right.
- 1:18:42Because it, you would never hear about a football or a basketball
- 1:18:45or baseball coach, just getting hired ever, right?
- 1:18:49Never happened to, you would a coach would be Hired, but they
- 1:18:52would not be a higher. Right at this point, you there
- 1:18:56wouldn't be in order for one of them to get fired right now and
- 1:18:59have to be something catastrophic.
- 1:19:00What absolutely. Yes.
- 1:19:03You know, that's my that's my point told, you know, like you
- 1:19:07said like you got me that you got like major moves, like I
- 1:19:10know one that comes to mind like harmless Meadows, going back to
- 1:19:13FSU, that's big as really big 4f issues so it was he that Colgate
- 1:19:18right? Yes.
- 1:19:18Yeah. He was the head of Colgate.
- 1:19:20Yeah, right. So that's sexual Colgate because
- 1:19:22that you're not only your position coach.
- 1:19:25Is gone your head coach has gone?
- 1:19:27Yeah, I know they've already. They've I'm saying David pick
- 1:19:32itpick itpick itpick it is going to be the interim boss.
- 1:19:36Yeah. And and I know pic pics, a great
- 1:19:38dude, like props to ya, right? But part of this ain't been
- 1:19:42there that long. No, two years a year or
- 1:19:48something like that. He's been there since he left
- 1:19:50North Carolina. So it's the game is weird, man.
- 1:19:55In its wild right now. What was it French?
- 1:19:58He's headed to Iowa here, which is great props friendship,
- 1:20:03right? Coco head coach at SFA that said
- 1:20:07that coal to yeah. And that program, you know he's
- 1:20:14been a part of you know some really great results in that
- 1:20:18program the last couple years. So SFA is definitely taking a
- 1:20:21hit there and it's like you have to you have to That spot in
- 1:20:25theory, right? So what that spots going to get
- 1:20:28filled in December. We will hire at the convention
- 1:20:30or something that's like what's going on, I mean, that was
- 1:20:34happening last year and that's just that that that's the crazy
- 1:20:38part about it all. Is that like the coaching
- 1:20:41Carousel? Two solutions point, the
- 1:20:46coaching Carousel in the sport of Collegiate, track and field
- 1:20:50does not follow the Collegiate calendar, know any way, shape or
- 1:20:54form. All the sense of urgency does
- 1:20:59not match the Collegiate calendar at all.
- 1:21:01Like let's be clear if like you know colgate's case right there
- 1:21:06running cross country right now. Yep.
- 1:21:09Absolutely right. So so you lose a head coach.
- 1:21:12So now like literally someone has to take over a job that
- 1:21:16they've never done before. Yep, in season.
- 1:21:21Yeah. Right.
- 1:21:22Like you're already taking a job that can be incredibly
- 1:21:24challenging. Jake and just make it like three
- 1:21:26times more challenging. And let me ask this question to
- 1:21:32to, to the king and the old head on the pan, right.
- 1:21:37It feels like this phenomenon is getting worse.
- 1:21:42Over the last five, six years. Is that, just me having a wrong
- 1:21:46perspective or were they doing this 10?
- 1:21:4915 years ago. It feels like it's way more out
- 1:21:51of control now. Oh, it's way more out of
- 1:21:53control. Absolutely, okay.
- 1:21:58Fired and changing positions, way more rapidly than they used
- 1:22:02to. And the good thing that I can't
- 1:22:04seem to figure out here is like I can get them a go back to the
- 1:22:08respect level. Here's like we have There's jobs
- 1:22:11out there where like this, like I want to say like Sam.
- 1:22:15He doesn't have one person on their staff.
- 1:22:17Wow. They've they've hired somebody
- 1:22:19to kind of oversee cross country until they get people in place.
- 1:22:23It's almost November. You know, like but don't cook.
- 1:22:28Men's coats left who left and went back to his alma mater.
- 1:22:32Think they still have a coach? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:38And it's just, I mean, I don't get it and I can't tell you why
- 1:22:43it's happening. I got no idea, but it definitely
- 1:22:45was not like this 10:15, again, five years ago would like, it's
- 1:22:49just like, this is It kind of started after the pandemic.
- 1:22:54Well, let's put it in a context. How long is that Iowa job in
- 1:22:57open June? You know, that's a good point.
- 1:23:06Yeah. So you're telling me, like, over
- 1:23:07the summer, there was nobody, there was no one.
- 1:23:12That's the same thing with the, with the fam.
- 1:23:13You job has been open since, like, last April, or May.
- 1:23:18It's all right. All of us know at least one
- 1:23:23person. If not three or four that have
- 1:23:25applied for that job. Yes.
- 1:23:27Oh my God can't make no decisions none.
- 1:23:29Exactly. Yeah, it's seven.
- 1:23:35Mrs. Now without their jumps coach because he went to
- 1:23:38Louisville. So it's crazy, man.
- 1:23:44It's crazy. Okay, so here's my question.
- 1:23:49So, we talked about the respect of the job for me.
- 1:23:51And I assume this is from an administrative perspective, not
- 1:23:53necessarily from our peer level or whatever that's called.
- 1:23:59So then is part of the resolution.
- 1:24:01Quote-unquote respecting our Position in our careers and
- 1:24:04staying through the duration of the Year question mark.
- 1:24:08I mean, I don't think people K. So if you're the head coach at
- 1:24:13Colgate and you can go back, you can go to Florida state, which
- 1:24:17is a power of 5 job. Wonder.
- 1:24:19She's done your. How do you look your spouse in
- 1:24:22the eye and go? Well, you know, I'm gonna stay
- 1:24:24here, not do that. When I'm just, when I've been
- 1:24:28charged with bettering the life of my family, right, right.
- 1:24:32So see so much of my issue is not that, you know, Harless is
- 1:24:36going the shu My estimate issue is that like even the Bob bring
- 1:24:41was in his position because, you know, Bob losses throws coach
- 1:24:46you're in September in September.
- 1:24:48Yep. Right.
- 1:24:49You got, that's the issue. Like and what happened to the,
- 1:24:53you know, we've all been around the NCAA meet years ago where
- 1:24:58people knew they had jobs open or coming open and they were
- 1:25:01walking around talking, it was where you started.
- 1:25:04The process, you really wanted to meet him And if you were
- 1:25:08looking for a job dead, man, walking, and you just trying to
- 1:25:13network, I mean, that's what it was.
- 1:25:15But now it's kind of like whatever, you know.
- 1:25:19Yeah. I mean, I'm never going to be
- 1:25:21the guy that that be grudges coach X from heading off to, to
- 1:25:27job why if it's a better situation for them, their
- 1:25:32families, whatever. I mean that's a that's a
- 1:25:34personal thing to evaluate, right?
- 1:25:37I just think from an Administration standpoint.
- 1:25:40I think a lot of the chaos that we're currently seeing in this
- 1:25:43space is because As of the lack of respect, the lack of care and
- 1:25:48attention. In April and May, yeah, when
- 1:25:53decisions should probably be made, like if you're on the
- 1:25:57fence about keeping coach X or not in April, will make the
- 1:26:02decision in May. Don't don't start that process
- 1:26:04in July. Yeah, because now you've created
- 1:26:08all this chaos, well, I'll add something to this.
- 1:26:11Clyde is happening in all facets of our profession.
- 1:26:16We just lost or head trainer or head trainer star.
- 1:26:20That's it at NC State in three days.
- 1:26:25Oh, the athletic training Market is, we're literally is insane
- 1:26:30halfway through a football season and we were now
- 1:26:34advertising for our head trainer.
- 1:26:37I mean yeah. And you know what's weird?
- 1:26:39Since you brought that up II agree that it's similar in that,
- 1:26:44in that basic respect, but I think it's total also totally
- 1:26:47different because there seems to be The athletic training world
- 1:26:51and has had a lot of people just straight-up leave the
- 1:26:53profession, right? So everywhere that I know that
- 1:26:57has that issue. It's literally there's no one
- 1:27:00applying. There's no one available.
- 1:27:03That's not what separation coaches professional.
- 1:27:06There's a whole bunch of available coaches.
- 1:27:09Yep, there's a whole bunch of resumes getting put in like you
- 1:27:13know so it's it's tough. Yeah.
- 1:27:19Yeah. Stuff.
- 1:27:20The only thing I would add up to any of this, right?
- 1:27:22And this is to me, has always been the ultimate disrespect.
- 1:27:26It's how long the hiring process is take.
- 1:27:30Hmm, yes. Right.
- 1:27:32Like on average, it takes a month to hire a track coach.
- 1:27:39On average. Yes some are much further.
- 1:27:42Some are much longer. There are a few there are few
- 1:27:46that are shorter but I can tell you this, even in the place
- 1:27:50where they can hire a track coach in two weeks, they could
- 1:27:53hire a basketball coach in two days.
- 1:27:57Absolutely. And you know what?
- 1:27:59I'll throw this out there because I lived through that,
- 1:28:01right? My exit from cow to take over,
- 1:28:05San Jose State was relatively late in the calendar, but
- 1:28:09because I have my opinion, Good respectful like leadership here.
- 1:28:19Then cared about how this program is going to be put
- 1:28:22together moving forward. I was able to hire all of my
- 1:28:26assistant before Berkeley was able to replace me.
- 1:28:30Wow, yeah, which is insane. That is unheard of it is and I
- 1:28:35totally respect the HR crew in the way they were able to free
- 1:28:39up. The red tape for me to be able
- 1:28:41to get that done right on. The flip side, I have a
- 1:28:44colleague of mine. I'll leave the school out of it.
- 1:28:47He's the head coach, he's the director of track and field and
- 1:28:50he has no say-so in who in the applications come in.
- 1:28:57He has no say, so in How those go from application to hiring
- 1:29:03pool, the administrators, take the applications, read them,
- 1:29:08fumble through them, present him with a group and conduct the
- 1:29:12first interviews before he even gets to talk to somebody.
- 1:29:17That's nuts. Yeah, and that's actually
- 1:29:20relatively common, which is what, which I always thought
- 1:29:22that I've actually experienced. That Clyde, absolutely insane.
- 1:29:26Yeah, I have. So speaking of like, what is
- 1:29:32UCLA going to do? I mean, but forgot about that
- 1:29:36job. What are they going to do?
- 1:29:39I mean, did we forget? Or is it just no, that's the
- 1:29:42thing. No, but that's not an official
- 1:29:44thing though. Yeah.
- 1:29:49Okay. So we know that.
- 1:29:51So UCLA has a Sprint open. Yes.
- 1:29:56Great. I guess, I guess they'll hire
- 1:29:57them in December. Whoever it is, but again, the
- 1:30:02carousel, keep spinning because more than likely they're going
- 1:30:06to more than likely. This is all assumption.
- 1:30:10Someone's got to vacate a spot to take that spot.
- 1:30:13Correct because currently with me that we can think of right?
- 1:30:17Someone who's jobless or who has retired or whatever the
- 1:30:20situation might be to fill that spot, it's going to be a
- 1:30:23replacement and it down. It's a major.
- 1:30:26That's a major appointment, right?
- 1:30:27Exactly, though. That that line should be long.
- 1:30:34In the same town. Wow.
- 1:30:36Well I mean, if you're thinking and you're looking we're giving
- 1:30:42you a couple places to send that resume to.
- 1:30:44So go ahead and get on that as a job.
- 1:30:47Still open at Tulane. Also what?
- 1:30:50Hmm. Hey the division 2 crew Cal
- 1:30:54State East Bay needs so to San Francisco State.
- 1:31:00The Bay Area is a wonderful place to be people.
- 1:31:02Come on in I'll give you a tour. Yeah.
- 1:31:06So and I mean, respectively those places need.
- 1:31:09Well, I know East Bay has one coaching position but they're
- 1:31:13looking for a staff San Francisco's looking to SF States
- 1:31:17looking to hire a staff. It's just, it's a lot and it's,
- 1:31:22you know, Scott has got to put yourself out there and figure
- 1:31:28out what you're willing to do and what you're not willing to
- 1:31:31do and and those people who are putting you out there, you know
- 1:31:36I know I've put out several names A lot of times for a lot
- 1:31:38of different level jobs and it's still happening.
- 1:31:42So figure out what you want to do.
- 1:31:45People the Pew, you're empowered to say no at this point is
- 1:31:52different than any employment landscape than any of us have
- 1:31:55ever. In while we're on this planet,
- 1:31:57right? Because there always has been
- 1:32:01talked about Job Solutions job, shortages and deficits.
- 1:32:07And this to my knowledge. I've been on this planet for 52
- 1:32:10years. This is the first and only time
- 1:32:12where there has been an employer and employee shortage.
- 1:32:17They actually are. There were three point eight
- 1:32:20million jobs unfilled in the United States right now.
- 1:32:24Wow, that's just wild. Like I know people who are
- 1:32:31Closing businesses or can't do greater volume in their small
- 1:32:36businesses because they cannot hire someone and they're paying
- 1:32:40like out-of-pocket numbers, right?
- 1:32:42Like for a job that would usually be $12 an hour.
- 1:32:44They're all, they're starting the job at $20 an hour.
- 1:32:47They can't get anybody to take it.
- 1:32:50So we are definitely covid did a lot of untalked about unforeseen
- 1:32:56things to the United States that it will.
- 1:32:59It's always going to be interesting to see how it shakes
- 1:33:01out on the back. So I'm just going to say this
- 1:33:03out loud and we'll move on that. Ripple, is it necessary -
- 1:33:07because entrepreneurship and Innovation is booming?
- 1:33:10Well, yeah. And so it's not - and I want to
- 1:33:12make sure that everyone doesn't get on that negative wave and
- 1:33:15write it or write it like entrepreneurship is on the rise,
- 1:33:18and it's an actual degree. And it's something that people
- 1:33:21are thriving off of. So, it's decisions, right?
- 1:33:24You are unable to make a decision.
- 1:33:26Make a decision. So I mean, hence, internet
- 1:33:29coaching, but we shall move on. Quiet.
- 1:33:35Would you rather are you ready sir since I didn't know it was
- 1:33:40my turn. I know I know I think I always
- 1:33:44think of going to be anyways Chipotle or Qdoba.
- 1:33:50I've never eaten it at Qdoba, but I'm going to tell you right
- 1:33:53now. I'm always Disappointed when I
- 1:33:56spend money at Chipotle so I'm going to go cute /.
- 1:34:00It's just not worth the price, you have to pay, would you
- 1:34:05rather be than the ocean or a lake?
- 1:34:10They both feel very dirty to me. That's an easy question to
- 1:34:15answer. One is salty, and I'd like one
- 1:34:17is salty. One is one is fresh water, fresh
- 1:34:19water. Well, then give me the fresh
- 1:34:22water that is in a lake. Would you rather be at the
- 1:34:26speaker at an event or a person of highlight in the audience Oh,
- 1:34:32yeah. Put me.
- 1:34:32Put me in front of the microphone.
- 1:34:34I'm good. Chicka chicka.
- 1:34:36Yeah, would you rather be able to play the piano or the guitar?
- 1:34:41Oh, man, I actually would love to learn how to play either, but
- 1:34:46I've never had the patience for either.
- 1:34:49So I feel like In my, in my random.
- 1:34:56Oh, what would it be like to be a musician?
- 1:34:58I feel like the guitar is more cool.
- 1:34:59So I'm going to take the guitar. Would you rather have peanuts or
- 1:35:04pretzels on your plane ride? I do not eat plain food if I
- 1:35:09don't have 20 clutch, my pearls. Oh my gosh.
- 1:35:15I was like, they don't serve either one of those in first
- 1:35:17class now. Right?
- 1:35:18You know, the the only food on the plane I will engage in is if
- 1:35:23I'm so happy to be in first class of which there are no
- 1:35:26peanuts or pretzels but When I was doing the, the soul playing
- 1:35:32travel portion of my life. Oh my god.
- 1:35:35Wow. I did a whole.
- 1:35:43Wow, last dinner, would you rather play zone defense or
- 1:35:47man-to-man? What sport?
- 1:35:49Are we talk about it? Answer the question.
- 1:35:54I mean man man. Got it.
- 1:35:58Would you rather watch Lord of the Rings series or Harry
- 1:36:01Potter? Lord of the Rings in?
- 1:36:03It's not even close. I can't I can't even get
- 1:36:06through. One of the Harry Potter movies.
- 1:36:10Would you rather enjoy this? Enjoy the sunset or enjoy them
- 1:36:13at sunrise? Y'all like mornings Sunset.
- 1:36:19All right, gentlemen, the floor is yours.
- 1:36:22If I'm up in early enough for Sunrise, I'm probably upset or
- 1:36:26I've had an incredible night I guess.
- 1:36:32Oh, my gosh. Would you rather spend two days
- 1:36:37with the 24 year old Charles Ryan, or the 29?
- 1:36:44Year-old Charles, run? Those are such specific numbers.
- 1:36:48Um, let me think it's 24. Verses 29, where were you?
- 1:36:56And what were you doing? It's exactly the math.
- 1:36:58I'm trying to run in my head. I know.
- 1:37:02I'm bad at instant math. What years were those twenty?
- 1:37:06Four and twenty nine. So that's 2004-2009.
- 1:37:13So just post grad. And then there's a method to my
- 1:37:17madness here. So, or just post free free.
- 1:37:22Are you, is that about right? No, no, no, 9.
- 1:37:25Yeah, pretty, are you? So, I was still at Tech.
- 1:37:28I was pretty broken both places. Ballin on a budget.
- 1:37:35I'm gonna, I'm gonna go 20. I'm go 29.
- 1:37:39I was heavily happier individual, in Louisiana than I
- 1:37:42was and Knoxville I liked you, much better in the Louisiana
- 1:37:48than I did you and Knoxville. Fair enough.
- 1:37:53Not like it. I like I didn't like dislike you
- 1:37:55and Knoxville but I liked you much.
- 1:37:57It was there a is there? A question usual?
- 1:38:00Hey, I was just commenting off your wonderful question.
- 1:38:04The pick on the EP H is over, I mean almost I wasn't aware that
- 1:38:12you made these decisions. I am the P.
- 1:38:15Salute. See that going to do it when you
- 1:38:22get picked on so you can take it, like, a man in this morning.
- 1:38:26So anyway, we will let you, we will let you know, when we
- 1:38:29decide to stop picking on me. I didn't know it was my turn.
- 1:38:36It is now, did you get to decide that?
- 1:38:44Exactly, I'm not ready yet. Well, clearly the governor's
- 1:38:49over there. Doing a lot of arm movements.
- 1:39:02Would you rather travel the world for free?
- 1:39:06For a year or have 50,000 dollars to spend however, you
- 1:39:10please. Only for a year.
- 1:39:17Travel the world free for a year.
- 1:39:22Yeah, that feels more valuable to me.
- 1:39:25I had a feeling you'd say that. All right, and it starts being
- 1:39:29renaissance man. Yeah, and I'll mean value as a
- 1:39:33monetarily like just life experience.
- 1:39:37Yes. I was trying to do to decide
- 1:39:41between several Petty questions because of your the petty guys.
- 1:39:45So well you are the EP so you can indulge yourself with to
- 1:39:48know I'm good. This I settled on this one.
- 1:39:52Would you rather be Jordan pool knowing that whole world knows
- 1:39:58that you got your face caved in, but you're going to be a warrior
- 1:40:03next year and signed a veteran, Max contract or would you rather
- 1:40:07be Ahman Green and have one the streets opinion as to who the
- 1:40:13man is and almost certainly not be a Warrior by the end of this
- 1:40:19year. You know and no chance you're
- 1:40:21getting a 28 million dollar veterans Max contract.
- 1:40:26Okay. First of all, I take many many
- 1:40:29issues with your premises here. I do not believe at all that.
- 1:40:33That's the way any of that is going to play out, who that I
- 1:40:38don't believe that. We'll talk about that off, are
- 1:40:41we could talk about that? I care.
- 1:40:43But I'd much rather be Draymond Green in this situation from
- 1:40:47every possible angle verse where I want to be tortured in this.
- 1:40:52I knew it not even not even a little bit.
- 1:40:56And listen, we do not know all of the facts of how we got to
- 1:41:05said, punch, we know enough. But we know enough, and I'm just
- 1:41:09going to say this, it seems Seems that Jordan pool wrote a
- 1:41:15check that his, but wasn't ready to cash, and this is what
- 1:41:20happens. Mmm, it also is obvious that the
- 1:41:24Golden State Warriors didn't care about any of that until the
- 1:41:28video surfaced. Everything was good across the
- 1:41:32water. Let's move on Till Somebody
- 1:41:34leaked the video, so it's clearly good.
- 1:41:38There's a video, clearly, the Golden State Warriors are
- 1:41:41hiring, you know, the depths of the FBI to find out who needs to
- 1:41:46be fired and it ain't Draymond Green.
- 1:41:48Yeah. Okay.
- 1:41:50So that's where I'm at with that whole scenario.
- 1:41:54Well, supposedly, I mean, they don't have to work that hard.
- 1:41:58They're gonna they, they probably already know who leaked
- 1:42:02it, because they know who paid him.
- 1:42:04Hmm. Hey somebody, the check That
- 1:42:08person and whoever connected to the leak, is what the Warriors
- 1:42:12are focused on. And they need to go and it was
- 1:42:16funny today. Somebody one of the Talking
- 1:42:19Heads was actually useful for once and they brought up a
- 1:42:22possible scenario that I don't even want it, like this would be
- 1:42:25the deepest Rabbit Hole possible for the Warriors and they were
- 1:42:28basically saying that like If somebody associated with pool
- 1:42:36leak, this as a direct career, assassination of Draymond and I
- 1:42:40was like, wow you know, I had to not far-fetched, that's my
- 1:42:45point. I hadn't even thought about that
- 1:42:48angle, and then I was like, now that I've heard that, I can't
- 1:42:50unhear that, and that is not far-fetched at all.
- 1:42:53And again, look I'm not advocating violence.
- 1:42:58Shouldn't have done that, but it's Pros.
- 1:43:00Sports baseball basketball football, that happens every
- 1:43:04day. Wait, every day.
- 1:43:07This is the one part about this. I take severe umbrage to.
- 1:43:11I have heard, I have heard Dre mom's actions called a sucker
- 1:43:16punch on, and on every single, on every single station.
- 1:43:20And I'm like no not at all. A Sucker Punch is one, that is
- 1:43:24unwarranted. That comes from nowhere.
- 1:43:27If you push me I have the right to Hold your face in like a
- 1:43:31tent. Yep it's not a surprise birthday
- 1:43:35party. First of all, we are giving way
- 1:43:37too much time to this idiocy. Second of all, I want I want
- 1:43:43anybody on this freaking panel to raise their hand when the man
- 1:43:49walks up to you and puts his chest on yours and you're not
- 1:43:52going to push you away. Yeah, right.
- 1:43:55Exactly. So don't act like, he like,
- 1:43:57didn't have, had been have reason to put his hand.
- 1:44:00The man put his chest on my chest, I'm pushing that away.
- 1:44:04I might be smart to put my hands up, so I'll get knocked out.
- 1:44:08I mean, let's be clear. He was warned and I would
- 1:44:12really, like, not talk about. This is a very bad look.
- 1:44:17I think most people on this panel.
- 1:44:19Probably would have hit Draymond first soaking up on them and we,
- 1:44:26we need to read the governor's tax because I'm in the same
- 1:44:30situation. And so we needed.
- 1:44:32All right? Well, as a blanket heartbeat
- 1:44:35prop, we want to lift up through lucious is mom who recently
- 1:44:38underwent surgery, she's recovery and we just want to
- 1:44:42make sure that she's continuing that way.
- 1:44:45So little shout-out, uplifting, and, and love towards her on her
- 1:44:49healing process and, and getting back to whatever it is is so
- 1:44:54blessings on blessings. Yes, absolutely.
- 1:44:57Always. And forever.
- 1:44:58So everyone have a great Great, great week, we'll see each other
- 1:45:02soon but other than that left right left, right and turn left.
- 1:45:05See everybody later
