SPEAKER_03: All remaining games are going to be section three versus section four, and these will be held at Vestal High School.
1:54

2:19
SPEAKER_03: And the A game will be Cicero North Syracuse against Corning Saturday at 6 p.m.
2:26
SPEAKER_03: Welcome to our class AA coverage.
2:29
SPEAKER_03: We have with us one of our football analysts who is an ex-student athlete at Odessa Montur with the Indians there.
2:37
SPEAKER_03: And that's Andrew Laguerre.
2:38
SPEAKER_03: Welcome, Andrew.
2:40
SPEAKER_03: Hey, good to be here again.
2:42
SPEAKER_03: Great, glad to have you.
2:44
SPEAKER_01: You betcha.
2:46
SPEAKER_03: You betcha.
2:46
SPEAKER_03: It's what it's all about.
2:48
SPEAKER_03: So what we're going to do is we're going to start off.
2:50
SPEAKER_03: I'm going to cover the uh Cicero North Syracuse North Stars.
2:54
SPEAKER_03: Now that's a real tongue twister.
2:55
SPEAKER_03: Say that that name three times fast.
2:58
SPEAKER_03: I'm going to cover that opponent for class A, and then Andrew is going to go in depth on the Corning Hawks uh team.
3:06
SPEAKER_03: And this is going to be the game that's going to be played Saturday evening, 6:30 p.m.
3:10
SPEAKER_03: at Vestal's Dick Hoover Stadium.
3:12
SPEAKER_03: Now, Cicero North Syracuse comes in with an eight and two record.
3:16
SPEAKER_03: And their head coach, Dev Klein, is uh gotten this team playing pretty well this season, although they did they did have a couple of uh losses on the season.
3:26
SPEAKER_03: Uh, one of those was to Clifton and one of those was to Liverpool.
3:30
SPEAKER_03: And those are relatively pretty good teams up there in section three.
3:35
SPEAKER_03: But um, they actually uh beat Baldwinville twice this year.
3:40
SPEAKER_03: They did that once early in the season at the fourth game, and then in just the last game to uh for the championship to make it into the state quarterfinals.
3:48
SPEAKER_03: So they uh they score a lot of points at times.
3:52
SPEAKER_03: Um, other times the it's relatively actually only about one time it was really low scoring with their lowest output was really 13 points.
4:02
SPEAKER_03: All other games were in the 30s, 40s.
4:04
SPEAKER_03: Uh so they they really don't have a uh or haven't had a problem scoring points, but uh I'll take you through some of their student athletes and what you can expect in the game.
4:14
SPEAKER_03: Their quarterback, Jackson Razmovsky.
4:17
SPEAKER_03: Uh, he's had uh 85 attempts and 56 completions for 1,016 yards, and that's an average of 12 yards per attempt.
4:28
SPEAKER_03: And he's had nine touchdowns and one interception.
4:32
SPEAKER_03: From what I understand, they're predominantly a running team.
4:35
SPEAKER_03: They like to run the ball, but it doesn't mean that they they can't pass it.
4:39
SPEAKER_03: Their number one runner is Jason Bartlett, and he has 72 carries for 439 yards, and that's 6.1 yards of carry, and he's got seven touchdowns.
4:49
SPEAKER_03: Their second leading ball carrier is Jamar Ballard.
4:52
SPEAKER_03: He comes in with 57 carries for 402 yards and a 7.1 average per carry and six touchdowns.
5:00
SPEAKER_03: Their third leading rusher is actually their quarterback, uh, backup quarterback, that is Anthony Testa.
5:06
SPEAKER_03: He's got carried the ball 44 times for 458 yards, 10.4 yards per carry and four touchdowns.
5:14
SPEAKER_03: So they they can run the ball very well.
5:17
SPEAKER_03: So that's something that Corning has to be cognizant of.
5:20
SPEAKER_03: On the receiving side, they also have some a couple receivers that are uh pretty dynamic.
5:26
SPEAKER_03: They've got Mason Ellis, he comes in with 25 receptions for 113 yards and an average of 16 points, uh or I'm sorry, 16 yards uh average per catch, and he's got four touchdowns.
5:39
SPEAKER_03: They also have Vince Vincenzo Latinosno, and he's comes in with 11 receptions, 217 yards, averages 19 yards per catch.
5:50
SPEAKER_03: So you can see that when uh they get the ball in certain student athletes' hands, they're very productive.
5:56
SPEAKER_03: But again, I think uh what Corning should expect from these guys probably is a little more on the run side, but be cautious, they do have the ability to throw the ball and make things happen from that standpoint.
6:08
SPEAKER_03: Also on the defensive side, they've got a couple of what I would call really good uh stalwarts.
6:14
SPEAKER_03: They've got uh Gerard Hill, who has 75 tackles and he's got six sacks.
6:22
SPEAKER_03: Okay, and second on the team in tackles is James Kay Hill with 67 tackles and four sacks.
6:29
SPEAKER_03: So not only are they making tackles when you're back there throwing the ball, if you threw if you do throw the ball a lot, which Corning doesn't for the most part, that could be a factor.
6:40
SPEAKER_03: But I think where these guys are obviously going to be tested is with Corning's double wing and the way that they run that that formation.
6:46
SPEAKER_03: So, really, um, Andrew, that's pretty much a summary of what I've got on Cicero, Cicero North Syracuse North Star.
6:54
SPEAKER_03: So take it away for the Corning Hawks.
6:57
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, one thing I did want to say about this matchup, though, is uh during the spring, they were supposed to play, and Cicero North Syracuse had a COVID issue at the end of the season.
7:07
SPEAKER_01: So Corning ended up five and oh, never got that sixth game.
7:11
SPEAKER_01: And you know, two years ago when we had the state tournament, a field goal on the last play of the game by CNS, they beat Corning 24-22.
7:19
SPEAKER_01: Uh, so this is sort of familiar territory, even if it's two teams from different parts of the state.
7:26
SPEAKER_01: Uh Corning, you know, their last two losses came down to a field goal because they lost 19-17 week four this year when they missed a field goal against Horseheads.
7:38
SPEAKER_01: Since that game, Corning has outscored its last five opponents 208 to 22.
7:44
SPEAKER_01: Uh and they're doing it, you know, uh 37-8 last week against Elmira, and Almira got the touchdown late in the game.
7:52
SPEAKER_01: Uh, another impressive performance by Corning.
7:56
SPEAKER_01: Anyone who knows Corning football knows it's double winged.
7:59
SPEAKER_01: They do what they do, but they do it really well.
8:02
SPEAKER_01: And, you know, as Mike Johnston will tell his kids, uh we only stop ourselves.
8:09
SPEAKER_01: Um the only time I think that maybe isn't necessarily the case is if you run up against an opponent who just dominates you physically on the line of scrimmage on the other side.
8:19
SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, that's always the key against this double wing.
8:22
SPEAKER_01: Uh, but otherwise, Corning feels like, you know, their kids are gonna make the blocks, they're they're gonna execute the plays, they're gonna move the ball.
8:30
SPEAKER_01: And, you know, the thing that makes them really tough is they got, you know, even though it's run, run, run, they can come at you in different angles.
8:38
SPEAKER_01: You know, last week Mason Smith, among the two wing backs, 23 carries for a buck 73.
8:44
SPEAKER_01: Uh Logan Booker, 55 yards, but only ran the ball six times.
8:47
SPEAKER_01: So either wing back can really hurt you, but then they get the fullback, Dylan Kennedy, and he ran 50 yards for a touchdown on his last carry of the game against Almira, ran for 118 yards.
8:59
SPEAKER_01: And there have been games where it's like you know, Johnston will get the ball into Kennedy's hands because that's what's there.
9:05
SPEAKER_01: There'll be games where it goes to Smith, there will be games where it goes to Booker.
9:09
SPEAKER_01: You know, they're basically evaluating what the defense is doing, and they're like, all right, you're trying to stop the fullback, but we're gonna hurt you with the wing back.
9:18
SPEAKER_01: So that's what in part what makes them really tough to defend.
9:22
SPEAKER_01: You know, the other things that make them so tough with that double wing, offensive line is really, really good.
9:28
SPEAKER_01: And uh Jack Hirsch, 6'7, 325 pounds, hard to miss that kid, but they get a lot of good kids up front uh who not only execute well, but are physical.
9:41
SPEAKER_01: Cornings always plays a physical style football, and you know, I love watching it, even though you know a lot of people aren't like, oh, the double wings, throw the ball once once in a while, will you, Mike?
9:52
SPEAKER_01: And but uh, you know, when you see an offense executed to that level, I think it's fun to watch.
9:57
SPEAKER_01: Um, but I will say Landon Birch, their quarterback, can throw the ball.
10:02
SPEAKER_01: And for you those of you who don't know, Landon's dad is Matt Birch, who was a first-round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals.
10:09
SPEAKER_01: Uh used to be a stud pitcher Edison High School, and he was a really good quarterback.
10:14
SPEAKER_01: So Lannon followed in his dad's footsteps a little bit.
10:18
SPEAKER_01: Um and then defensively, like I said, they've given up 22 points in the last uh what I say, five games or whatever.
10:29
SPEAKER_01: And a couple of those touchdowns have been sort of, you know, I don't want to say garbage time, but late in the game when things were out of hand.
10:36
SPEAKER_01: So defensively, they're playing great football, and the defense is what carried them two years ago all the way into the state quarterfinal.
10:44
SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, one thing worth a mentioning, a kid named Will Kibler, he's uh transferring this school year out of Wellsboro, nine interceptions a season.
10:55
SPEAKER_01: I mean, you you barely see that in a 16-game, 17-game NFL season, but nine interceptions at the high school level, when you're playing a lot of teams that don't throw the ball, he's just got great instincts, great athleticism.
11:08
SPEAKER_01: And he's also basically the number three wing back.
11:11
SPEAKER_01: So he, you know, it's possible you might see him come in and do some damage carrying the ball.
11:15
SPEAKER_01: And, you know, the kid named Lucas Zacco, linebacker, he's only 5'9, but physical, hit you, hit you type of kid.
11:24
SPEAKER_01: And that, you know, that's what Corning does on the defensive end.
11:26
SPEAKER_01: They play physical football, they play sound football, they're really well coached, and you know, that's why the point totals are so low.
11:35
SPEAKER_01: And you know, I you know, they lost that game to horseheads, and I think I asked it a couple weeks later, I said that that guy get you guys going.
11:44
SPEAKER_01: And I was told by one of the players, he's like, Well, we just, you know, that's in the past, so they weren't really focused on it, but I'm sure that that sort of woke him up a little bit and sort of was an impetus to the run that we've seen right now from Corney.
11:57
SPEAKER_03: Sure.
11:57
SPEAKER_03: Now that student athlete you said that came in and transferred in for Wellsboro, was his name Kibler?
12:02
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Will Kibler.
12:04
SPEAKER_03: Is he a corner?
12:05
SPEAKER_03: Is he playing a corner or is he a safety?
12:07
SPEAKER_01: He's uh playing safety.
12:09
SPEAKER_03: Okay, so he's sound like a typical ball hawk kind of safety that can really read offense as well and go get it.
12:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's uh he sort of made a few of those uh I I call it call them center field type interceptions, but uh great break on the ball has a lot to do with it as well.
12:27
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the other the one thing with defensing um a double wing formation like that, sometimes it's difficult just to find the ball after it's snapped.
12:38
SPEAKER_03: And that's that's part of the problem is being able to react because you can you can have two handoffs in the backfield relatively quickly and have them be opposing directions, misdirection kind of handoffs.
12:51
SPEAKER_03: And that in itself is what creates a lot of problems.
12:54
SPEAKER_03: So then you begin to focus on that, and the next thing you know, it's the the fake doing that, and it's the fullback right up the middle.
13:00
SPEAKER_03: You totally you totally miss the fullback on that sometimes.
13:03
SPEAKER_03: And by the time he's into the uh just past the second level, then it's usually one-on-one situation.
13:09
SPEAKER_03: So that's what makes that offense so tough is because things can happen quickly in the backfield and really uh drastically miss direction kind of plays and switch the directions.
13:21
SPEAKER_03: Where if you have a traditional offense where they do like a double reverse or something, everybody can see that because it's out away from uh some of the other student athletes and players.
13:31
SPEAKER_03: But when you're in that double wing situation, there's a lot of bodies in an area, and just some of those, like you mentioned that one student athlete, six foot seven.
13:38
SPEAKER_03: I mean, if he gets up any kind of block at all and gets up, he's gonna be blocking off somebody's visual lane to the ball.
13:45
SPEAKER_03: So that in itself causes some problems.
13:47
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, small quick back behind six, seven, three twenty-five can be uh tough to defend, you know.
13:53
SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, one thing I did want to say is a lot of time, you know, Corning has gone out of its way to try and schedule as good a team as it can from outside the section.
14:03
SPEAKER_01: But the thing they run into a little bit is teams don't want to play them because they don't want to face that double wing.
14:09
SPEAKER_01: But in this case, in section four, because Almira runs a double wing and they run it well, and Corning runs a double wing well, so teams are more familiar with it and see it more often.
14:22
SPEAKER_01: So sometimes you get into the state tournament and you know you may get a defense that is not face the double wing a whole bunch, and it becomes that much more tough, you know, when you're not used to seeing the double wing, and like you said, the misdirection and all that type of stuff.
14:37
SPEAKER_03: Sure.
14:37
SPEAKER_03: The understanding the concept is one thing, but stopping it's another.
14:41
SPEAKER_03: And if you have the student athletes up front, the one play that I I think is almost impossible to stop is say you've got a short yardage situation, and the the quarterback goes up under center, the pullback's right behind him, he snaps to the quarterback, the center plows forward, the two guards are press are pushing the center, the two tackles are pushing the center.
15:02
SPEAKER_03: It's a huge uh body, huge mass motion up front with a lot of inertia pushing at that single point of attack.
15:10
SPEAKER_03: And that is near impossible to stop.
15:13
SPEAKER_03: Even if you have a huge nose guard that can handle both A gaps, usually he can act that's going to overpower him, and you're gonna get your one or your two yards.
15:22
SPEAKER_03: So it's not only a good offense to you know break the off-tackle kind of stuff and then shoot the uh fullback up into the A or B gaps, but it's also very good for short yardage plays, even if you know it's coming just by that the play I described.
15:38
SPEAKER_03: You know, it can be a quarterback sneak, the quarterback can take and hand it to the fullback and then become another blocker up front.
15:44
SPEAKER_03: The two wing backs can come in.
15:45
SPEAKER_03: It it is a nightmare.
15:47
SPEAKER_03: And I had to coach against it one year when it was when uh coach Johnson had it up at Corning West at the time, and uh it we it was not fun.
15:56
SPEAKER_03: It's uh it's a real challenge.
15:57
SPEAKER_03: I don't think a lot of coordinators enjoy going up against that, and it's it's they do it very well, like you said, and it's they keep doing it, they keep, and it's not like they run it for a series and switch to something else.
16:10
SPEAKER_03: You know, you may stop it once or twice, but there we go.
16:13
SPEAKER_03: We just ran 13 yards, so now we got a first and 10, we're ready to go again.
16:17
SPEAKER_03: So it's it's tough.
16:18
SPEAKER_03: And I I think it bodes them well, not only in the section, but when they get it this uh into the state tournament like this.
16:25
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you mentioned the short yardage.
16:27
SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to think the last time I saw a team stop corning on the third and one or fourth and one.
16:32
SPEAKER_01: I honestly it it's probably years ago, and I don't really remember it.
16:36
SPEAKER_01: And yeah, see one other thing that worth a mention is uh what Corning will also do with this double wing is run the super sped up fast paced offense.
16:47
SPEAKER_01: So they're they're running to the line of scrimmage and snapping the ball as soon as you know the official gets it down to be snapped, and and they don't always do it, but it's really like I feel like once that type of uh drive gets six or seven plays deep, it it seems like it's inevitable that they're gonna score because teams are just worn down by then.
17:09
SPEAKER_01: And you know, it's extremely effective.
17:12
SPEAKER_01: And you know, as someone trying to take photos and do stats, a little frustrating for me, I gotta say, say, because it's just going so quick, but it uh it's impressive when it's going full kilter.
17:22
SPEAKER_03: Sure.
17:23
SPEAKER_03: The other thing is uh I think they did that in their last game or the game before that, went uh initially with that quick um you know formation and actually had the ball like three times and scored three times.
17:36
SPEAKER_03: And that's that's a huge play.
17:38
SPEAKER_03: And it can also be a great decoy, too.
17:41
SPEAKER_03: When you have a dominant front like that and a team that's really able to run the ball like that, just coming up the line of scrimmage real quick like that.
17:49
SPEAKER_03: Maybe it's a short yardage or it's a fourth and one.
17:51
SPEAKER_03: You get those young student athletes seeing that comeback, and they're geared up and you hit them with a hard count, knowing that you're not going to go.
17:57
SPEAKER_03: Bang, now they're off size, and you just they just handed you a first down.
18:01
SPEAKER_03: So it doesn't have to be something that they execute fully through.
18:05
SPEAKER_03: They they go with that demeanor up to the line of scrimmage and make like everything is is running fast.
18:10
SPEAKER_03: And the next thing you know, people are jumping in the neutral zone, and there you go.
18:14
SPEAKER_03: So there's a lot of things you can do with that offense, and some of it is physical and some of it is mental.
18:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guarantee CNS this week is spending a lot of time trying to simulate defending that, and I don't really know how you do it effectively because your uh, you know, your other offense isn't gonna run it nearly as well as what Corning does, but certainly they're trying to find a way right now to prepare for that.
18:39
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, what I did when I uh was at Vestal, I was a defensive coordinator for the JVs, we ran a literally a six-five.
18:47
SPEAKER_03: I mean, everything was compressed up to the line of scrimmage, and it was a six-five.
18:50
SPEAKER_03: And what we did at the snap of the ball, you had to your all your eligible receivers had to be checked while you were, you know, you had to check them first so that that you make sure that they were covered.
19:00
SPEAKER_03: Because what they'll do is they'll, if you have too many people up there and dedicate literally everybody to the run, they're gonna hit you with a pop pass with that tight end over the middle, and they're gonna one of the wings are gonna shoot out into the flat, and then it's one-on-one or one on none, you know.
19:14
SPEAKER_03: So that's what we do.
19:15
SPEAKER_03: We ran a six-five, and we were very successful at it.
19:18
SPEAKER_03: We had you know exceptional student athletes on the defensive side of the ball.
19:21
SPEAKER_03: I was lucky to have student athletes like that, but that's really the only way I think that you can defense it with a six-five or some kind of stacked defense, and because it's it's brawn against brawn, but it's also mixed direction and in finesse, too.
19:36
SPEAKER_03: So that's what makes it difficult.
19:37
SPEAKER_03: So you and I could talk all day on this, coach, but uh it's it's good stuff.
19:42
SPEAKER_03: So I think we've uh we've covered pretty much everything here for this particular contest.
19:47
SPEAKER_03: Again, it's gonna be Saturday at 6 p.m.
19:50
SPEAKER_03: Vestals Dick Hoover Stadium.
19:51
SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be Cicero, North Syracuse North Stars coming into eight and two facing the Corning Hawks, eight and one, led by Coach Mike Johnston Jr.
20:00
SPEAKER_03: So it should be a good ball game.
20:02
SPEAKER_03: Thank you, Andrew, for everything.
20:03
SPEAKER_03: We appreciate it.
20:04
SPEAKER_03: Thanks, Tim.
20:06
SPEAKER_03: Good to talk to you.
20:07
SPEAKER_03: Here we go.
20:08
SPEAKER_03: We're going into the state playoffs.
20:10
SPEAKER_03: Roger Neal and I are gonna cover the ABCs of section four.
20:15
SPEAKER_03: We're gonna cover the A game, the B game, and the C game.
20:20
SPEAKER_03: And the way that'll work is Roger will give us insight and analysis on the section four team in the particular particular games I just mentioned, and then I'll uh cover the section three participants in those games.
20:32
SPEAKER_03: So kick it off, Roger, with the uh A game.
20:36
SPEAKER_02: All right, let's talk about the A battle.
20:38
SPEAKER_02: Uh UE advancing the Tigers with a payback game, if you will.
20:43
SPEAKER_02: They uh only won, but they shut out horseheads 34-0, and they covered them.
20:49
SPEAKER_02: They uh uh first time they met in the regular season, week seven.
20:52
SPEAKER_02: Horseheads stunned UE 17-7.
20:55
SPEAKER_02: It was the first of two straight losses for the Tigers, really had them reeling because they were rolling through the other opponents in the section until they hit horseheads.
21:05
SPEAKER_02: So it was a 17-7 game regular season, but not this time around.
21:09
SPEAKER_02: And one thing I think you've got to give credit to Tom Bolino and his staff, they're outstanding uh in uh coming up with defensive schemes, thus a shutout.
21:17
SPEAKER_02: They shot out the high-flying main Enwell Spartans early in the regular season, then came back to do the same against horseheads.
21:24
SPEAKER_02: I think a lot of people were stunned, not so much that UE won, but that they fired up 34 points offensively and held the opponents to nothing.
21:35
SPEAKER_02: And uh third quarter, uh 21 third quarter points, broke open a seven-nothing game.
21:41
SPEAKER_02: And so the second shutout of the year for UE's Tigers and uh it's gonna be very interesting to see what they can do as they approach the uh quarterfinals against Section Three, because the team that they're facing I think will be unlike any team they really faced in the regular season in Section.
22:00
SPEAKER_02: For that is at Cervic UCBA fires the ball a lot.
22:03
SPEAKER_02: They're predominantly a passing team.
22:05
SPEAKER_02: So, Tim, what about trying to defense that with Bellino and staff trying to come up with a scheme to hold them off the board?
22:11
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm very confident in Tommy Bellino because uh I coached him when he was uh strong safety for the the BC Jets, and he had that it factor about him in terms of coaching.
22:23
SPEAKER_03: He was sort of cerebral.
22:24
SPEAKER_03: He was he was always in the right place, understood the defense, understood the offense.
22:29
SPEAKER_03: He's a high energy guy and a no-quit guy, and that's exactly what you see in Union Indicat.
22:35
SPEAKER_03: So it's no surprise that he's got that program back where it used to be.
22:40
SPEAKER_03: But to play off the game with the CBA, uh the brothers of CBA from Syracuse, they come in at six and three.
22:48
SPEAKER_03: And Coach Casey Brown is is coming off what I call a uh a get back game or a revenge game, if you will.
22:55
SPEAKER_03: They were in their fifth week of the season, they were spanked pretty good by Indian River, 30 to 51.
23:02
SPEAKER_03: So they just avenged that game with a 61 to 26 win with coming into this game against Unit Endicott.
23:11
SPEAKER_03: Now they started their season off with really three consecutive solid wins.
23:16
SPEAKER_03: They actually had a canceled game in there as well.
23:18
SPEAKER_03: But that first time that they played Indian River in week five, that started a three-game skid for them.
23:25
SPEAKER_03: And so they lost in week five to Indian River 30 to 51 and subsequently lost the next two games as well.
23:33
SPEAKER_03: Won the next two, and then that third one was the Indian River game they just played, and they won that 61 to 26.
23:41
SPEAKER_03: So, Roger, they have no problem putting up points on the board.
23:45
SPEAKER_03: They're typically a pro set, prolific type of an offense that likes to put the football in the air a lot.
23:52
SPEAKER_03: Their quarterback, Jordan Ray, he had 219 attempts this year and completed 128 of those for 1,738 yards and 21 touchdowns.
24:05
SPEAKER_03: Every time they make a reception, it's 7.9 yards per average.
24:11
SPEAKER_03: So that's something Yui has got to be very cognitous of is the ability to stop that particular um type of an offense.
24:20
SPEAKER_03: Now, you probably are going to see them in a lot of zone.
24:24
SPEAKER_03: Yui, I'm talking about you're probably gonna see them in a lot of zone because with zone, you can be backpedaling and you still keep your eyes on the quarterback and see through the receiver, through your zone into the quarterback.
24:35
SPEAKER_03: And why that's important is because the quarterback, Jordan Ray, he's run the ball 48 times for 275 yards and six touchdowns.
24:45
SPEAKER_03: So it's not just he's gonna be throwing to a lot of good student athletes in the receiver position.
24:50
SPEAKER_03: If they're covered and you don't have him in the pocket, so to speak, and you got you don't have the outsides protected, you know, he's he's gonna be able to run and and do damage that way.
25:01
SPEAKER_03: So that's something you got to be cognizant of as well.
25:04
SPEAKER_03: Their receiving core roger is is unbelievable.
25:08
SPEAKER_03: And this is high school now.
25:09
SPEAKER_03: Keep in mind this their number one receiver, Sayer Torrance, he has 57 catches for 611 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he averages slightly over first down every time he catches it.
25:22
SPEAKER_03: So that would be somebody I would put on uh the watch list in terms of we got to stop him, but they're probably gonna end up being in single coverage or stay into zone coverage because they have so many other uh prolific players.
25:36
SPEAKER_03: Their second receiver has 21 receptions for 277 yards.
25:41
SPEAKER_03: That's Amari Pitts.
25:43
SPEAKER_03: Their third receiver has 20 receptions, 268 yards, that's Don Anderson.
25:48
SPEAKER_03: And their fourth and fifth, respectively, they've got 12 and uh 13 catches between them and a little over 300 yards.
25:57
SPEAKER_03: So Yui is gonna have their work cut out for them.
26:00
SPEAKER_03: And as you alluded to, Roger, Yui does Coach Tommy Bellino and his staff does come in with an excellent game plan each game to take away whatever it is you do.
26:10
SPEAKER_03: But this, I think, is gonna be a very good test for them because if, like I said, if they aren't able to stop the pass and contain the quarterback, the quarterbacks is going to put so much pressure on them, and then you've got to make some adjustments.
26:22
SPEAKER_03: You've got to either play coverage or you got to play the run with you know another guy or two in the box.
26:27
SPEAKER_03: So that's gonna be a real interesting game, Roger.
26:30
SPEAKER_03: All right, now on to the B game.
26:31
SPEAKER_03: What do you got there for us, Roger Main Enwell and Homer Georgins?
26:35
SPEAKER_02: Let's uh talk about how the Spartans got to the uh game against uh the Section 3 champ.
26:41
SPEAKER_02: Emmy Klumber, do we go up at uh Spartan Stadium last weekend 42-0?
26:47
SPEAKER_02: And they were in command pretty much from the opening part of the game right on through the end.
26:52
SPEAKER_02: They could have even up that score more.
26:54
SPEAKER_02: They had the second team in for much of the uh well late third quarter and the fourth quarter.
26:59
SPEAKER_02: Let's face it, as Michael Mancini goes, so goes the offense for the main animal Spartans.
27:04
SPEAKER_02: He is tremendous.
27:05
SPEAKER_02: And we talked uh several programs back about his quickness, not just that he's fast, he is.
27:10
SPEAKER_02: But I pity anybody trying to go one-on-one in the secondary, trying to stop him if he gets in behind the linebackers because he is uh incredible in getting away from would-be tacklers.
27:20
SPEAKER_02: So whoever's gonna try to shut him down, they better hope that they're able to hold him at bay uh with just a few yards past the line of scrimmage because if he gets into your secondary, all he'll do is drop the ball in the end zone after he scores.
27:33
SPEAKER_02: He had three rushing touchdowns in that game.
27:35
SPEAKER_02: And interestingly enough, they can put the ball in the air, certainly, but uh, it was all on the ground against Owego.
27:42
SPEAKER_02: Uh Mancini, three rushing touchdowns.
27:44
SPEAKER_02: Ethan Sadler ran for 70 yards, Donnie Hammer, 65 yards and a couple of TDs.
27:50
SPEAKER_02: So all those scores came on the ground.
27:52
SPEAKER_02: So a very uh tough ground game.
27:55
SPEAKER_02: They played overall very well.
27:57
SPEAKER_02: And again, with six wins in a row, they are back and rolling and hungry to move on in the state championship round.
28:04
SPEAKER_02: So uh look out for the defense with the with Homer trying to shut down ME.
28:09
SPEAKER_02: It'll be interesting to see what Homer can put up against the Spartan defense, but offensively, if Mancini can have a big game, it should be a great night for the Spartans.
28:19
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the uh Homer Trojans come in nine and zero, led by coach Gary Pasidlich, and they uh have a pretty prolific offense too, Roger.
28:28
SPEAKER_03: They predominantly run, uh they run much more than they pass, let's put it that way.
28:33
SPEAKER_03: They had three games of 60 plus points they scored, and they had two games of 50 plus points that they scored.
28:39
SPEAKER_03: So they're they're uh used to putting a lot of points on the board, as you mentioned that with Maine Enwell.
28:47
SPEAKER_03: This is going to be a real test for main well and main endwell to stop the run.
28:51
SPEAKER_03: Uh, there's two particular Homer Trojans, Homer Trojans that are uh what I call the workhorses carrying the ball.
28:58
SPEAKER_03: You've got Dan Sorensen, he's carried the ball 96 times for 865 yards and nine touchdowns.
29:08
SPEAKER_03: Dave Morris has carried the ball 93 times for 867 yards and 11 touchdowns.
29:15
SPEAKER_03: And both of those running backs are right around nine yards per carry.
29:20
SPEAKER_03: So you've got those two guys, but you've also got uh Logan Peck, who's carried the ball 57 times for 393 yards, and you've got two other student athletes that have carried the ball 35 and 43, respectively.
29:35
SPEAKER_03: That's Hunter Rihan and Jeffrey Stauber.
29:40
SPEAKER_03: And they both run the ball pretty close to 300 yards.
29:44
SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, 300 yards total each.
29:46
SPEAKER_03: So there's gonna be a lot of ground game coming at the defense.
29:50
SPEAKER_03: Now, what this will do is test the depth of the the main end well defense, because if you have this stable of running backs with this many carries coming at you, they're gonna be able to rotate.
30:00
SPEAKER_03: It looks like they rotate fresh legs in every maybe every series or or just when a guy's showing fatigue, those kind of things.
30:08
SPEAKER_03: And that's gonna be the tough part.
30:09
SPEAKER_03: You may stop them for a while, but if they continually pound on you with this quality of running, that's gonna make it a very tough game.
30:17
SPEAKER_03: But nonetheless, that's also gonna be an interesting game as well.
30:21
SPEAKER_03: Now we move on to the C game.
30:23
SPEAKER_03: This is gonna be Shenango Forks taking on the skinny Atlas Lakers.
30:27
SPEAKER_03: Take us through Shenango Forks, Roger.
30:30
SPEAKER_02: Right.
30:30
SPEAKER_02: Uh, they had a big showdown to get to this game against previously unbeaten Waverly.
30:36
SPEAKER_02: Waverly came in with 10 wins, no losses.
30:39
SPEAKER_02: And uh it was billed to be a high-flying game for them offensively against what we all know uh is a very tough Shenango Forks defense.
30:48
SPEAKER_02: And again, it's a Blue Devils Stadium.
30:50
SPEAKER_02: Not many teams can ever claim uh that they come out of there with a win.
30:54
SPEAKER_02: Usually the teams come in uh walking tall and leaving bent over because they've been banged around by the forks, uh and the blue devils took it to them again 34 to 6.
31:04
SPEAKER_02: What a game! And you can sum it up, anybody that's seen or followed the forks just say forks football.
31:11
SPEAKER_02: That's what they did.
31:12
SPEAKER_02: Not much passing.
31:13
SPEAKER_02: Uh huh.
31:13
SPEAKER_02: They ran the ball, uh 476 yards on the ground.
31:17
SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
31:17
SPEAKER_02: And um Xander Arnold had uh 219 yards rushing, the quarterback rate he starked 97 yards rushing.
31:25
SPEAKER_02: He also ended up with 131s total with uh about 31 or more yards passing, a couple of TDs, dubbs hawk, 111 yards rushing.
31:34
SPEAKER_02: Uh huh.
31:35
SPEAKER_02: And so they've got at least two outstanding running backs, plus uh the quarterback who can do it all as well.
31:41
SPEAKER_02: So uh a big win for them.
31:43
SPEAKER_02: Uh not surprising uh to me that they won, but by that margin, it was uh Waverly again uh at a milestone here, first time their program ever won 10 games.
31:53
SPEAKER_02: So obviously a great year for them, but again, they have to play at forks, and when that happened, not many leave standing, and that was the case again.
32:01
SPEAKER_02: So it should be outstanding.
32:02
SPEAKER_02: If Forks plays forks football, they could go the distance again, but it should be an outstanding game this weekend.
32:09
SPEAKER_03: Skinny Atlas comes in at nine and zero, and coach Joe Sedoni has them playing very well.
32:14
SPEAKER_03: And as I look at them on paper, Roger, I see a pretty balanced offense, and on the defensive side, there is a lot of tacklers on defense, and this is what they're gonna need to do if they're gonna stop that two-headed uh student athlete ground game for Shenango Forks that you alluded to.
32:32
SPEAKER_03: In the first four games, the combined score for Skinny Atlas was of their games was 209 to 18.
32:42
SPEAKER_03: 209 to 18.
32:44
SPEAKER_03: That's only their first four games.
32:46
SPEAKER_03: Now they just came out of a big game with General Brown to get to this particular game, and they uh that was a home game at Skinny Atlas, and they won that 35 to 14.
32:56
SPEAKER_03: They've got an exceptional quarterback and James Musso.
33:00
SPEAKER_03: He's attempted 150 passes and completed 95 of those.
33:04
SPEAKER_03: So he's he's very accurate, must be.
33:06
SPEAKER_03: He's got a 1,885 yards, and they averaged 12.6 yards per catch.
33:13
SPEAKER_03: So that's going to be tough, but that's not really the overall strength.
33:16
SPEAKER_03: Like I said, they're pretty balanced.
33:18
SPEAKER_03: They've got two running backs that are that are doing most of the carrying.
33:23
SPEAKER_03: The first one is Grayson Brunell, Grayson Brunel.
33:26
SPEAKER_03: He's carried 156 times for 1,048 yards, and that's a 7.4 yard average, and he scored 16 touchdowns.
33:35
SPEAKER_03: Their second leading rusher just happens to be their quarterback.
33:39
SPEAKER_03: He's carried the ball 36 times for 358 yards and 11 touchdowns.
33:45
SPEAKER_03: That's 9.9 yards per average.
33:47
SPEAKER_03: So you can see where their running games at.
33:50
SPEAKER_03: If it isn't uh Grayson carrying the ball, most of the time after that's James.
33:55
SPEAKER_03: And I assume that they probably run the fake and follow, you know, the midline stuff where you know you fake it and you go, or it's an read option going down the line.
34:03
SPEAKER_03: I can I would just assume that that's what they run.
34:06
SPEAKER_03: Now, they also have some very good receivers as well.
34:10
SPEAKER_03: They've got Cody Nesbitt, who's comes in with 38 receptions for 763 yards.
34:18
SPEAKER_03: They've got Patrick Herr, who comes in with 17 receptions, 332 yards, and five touchdowns.
34:26
SPEAKER_03: I mentioned Kobe.
34:27
SPEAKER_03: Cody, he had eight touchdowns.
34:29
SPEAKER_03: And then Grayson, who was also must come out of the backfield.
34:32
SPEAKER_03: He's got 13 receptions for 232 yards.
34:35
SPEAKER_03: That's a 17.8 average, and he scored four touchdowns.
34:40
SPEAKER_03: But this is really what caught my eye, Roger, on the defensive side of the ball.
34:44
SPEAKER_03: And this is what they're going to need to match up against Shenango Forks.
34:47
SPEAKER_03: And I think this is going to be an actual classic old school brawn against Braun.
34:52
SPEAKER_03: You run it, we're going to try to tackle you.
34:56
SPEAKER_03: Their number one tackler, who actually is all is also a receiver.
35:00
SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, he's a defensive back as well.
35:03
SPEAKER_03: That's Cody Nesbitt.
35:04
SPEAKER_03: He comes in with 74 tackles.
35:08
SPEAKER_03: And second uh student athlete in tackles is Colin Morrissey.
35:13
SPEAKER_03: He's coming in with 54.
35:15
SPEAKER_03: And you've got the quarterback who is third in tackles on the defense.
35:19
SPEAKER_03: And I don't think that that's necessarily a good thing to have your quarterback involved in that many tackles.
35:24
SPEAKER_03: Uh, James Muscle, he's come in with 51 tackles.
35:28
SPEAKER_03: And then you've got a number of guys, a number of student athletes in the 40s and uh the mid-30s.
35:34
SPEAKER_03: So they've got what it looks to me like, Roger, when you have that many tackles spread out across that many student athletes, they are rotating uh student athletes through on the defense.
35:45
SPEAKER_03: They they have to be, because not everybody's on on every tackle together.
35:49
SPEAKER_03: So I think that uh Shenango Forks is going to be going against some fresh legs of these student athletes for Skinny Atlas on the defensive side of the ball.
36:00
SPEAKER_03: And some of those, like I said, the quarterback and um Cody Nesbitt, they also are very active on the offensive side.
36:07
SPEAKER_03: So that may take uh you know a little bit of their uh stamina as well.
36:11
SPEAKER_03: But this I think is gonna be a classic old school game.
36:15
SPEAKER_03: And when you and I were calling games, Roger, and we said something like that, it turned out to be uh like a uh seven on seven drill in passing.
36:26
SPEAKER_03: So we're not always accurate with that, but we're giving you the best we got, and that's that's what we think is is gonna uh happen in these particular games.
36:34
SPEAKER_03: So again, Roger, thank you for all your information.
36:37
SPEAKER_03: And I think we got our fans set up pretty good for the ABCs of the Section Four uh teams that are going on to play in the States.
36:45
SPEAKER_03: All right, go section four.
36:47
SPEAKER_03: You betcha.
36:48
SPEAKER_03: All right, thank you, Roger.
36:49
SPEAKER_03: Take care.
36:50
SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
36:50
SPEAKER_03: All right.
36:51
SPEAKER_03: We have uh our analyst TB with us today, and that TB is it's not Tom Brady, it's not Terry Bradshaw or Tiki Barber, and it's not even Todd Bowdai.
37:01
SPEAKER_03: We got Tim Bernie from the valley.
37:04
SPEAKER_03: I think everybody involved with sports down there knows you, Tim.
37:06
SPEAKER_03: Welcome.
37:07
SPEAKER_03: Thanks, coach, appreciate it.
37:09
SPEAKER_03: What we're gonna talk to you about today and share our insight and knowledge on is the um first we're gonna go with the class D game where Dulzville Blue Devils take on the Tioga Tigers.
37:19
SPEAKER_03: And we'll start off with uh Dolgeville.
37:21
SPEAKER_03: They come in at 10 and zero with uh Coach Dan Zikkowski.
37:27
SPEAKER_03: And uh they're a they're a pretty dominant team in terms of scoring points.
37:31
SPEAKER_03: They've outscored their opponents this season 396 to 79.
37:37
SPEAKER_03: Those are like video game kind of numbers, but um they uh they're predominantly a running team, they have really good size up front and their offensive line.
37:47
SPEAKER_03: Their quarterback, Gregory Gagnier Jr., he likes to run the option, and he does that typically out of the pistol formation.
37:54
SPEAKER_03: So when you're running the option out of the pistol, you've got that option to also keep it yourself, which he does, or you pass, but they typically are not a uh prolific passing team.
38:05
SPEAKER_03: They like to get their chunks and yardage on the ground, and they can also run the double wing.
38:10
SPEAKER_03: And as you know, we've got a few teams here in the section that run that.
38:15
SPEAKER_03: And one is we're gonna be talking about a little bit later.
38:18
SPEAKER_03: Uh, that's corning.
38:19
SPEAKER_03: They run that, they're going into the state uh playoffs as well.
38:22
SPEAKER_03: So it's a tough defense, or I'm sorry, tough offense to defense.
38:26
SPEAKER_03: And uh their quarterback, Ganya's passing stats, he's nine of 44 for 440 yards, and uh that's about 44 yards per game.
38:35
SPEAKER_03: So you can see right there in those statistics that they like to run the ball.
38:39
SPEAKER_03: And he's had four interceptions.
38:40
SPEAKER_03: Their number one runner is Jared Blinsky.
38:43
SPEAKER_03: He's had 119 rushes, 1,182 yards, and 15 touchdowns.
38:48
SPEAKER_03: And he's also, my understanding, the leading rusher in class D section three with with 118 yards per game, which is which is quite a bit.
38:59
SPEAKER_03: Their second leading runner is Connor Morris, 108 yards.
39:03
SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry, 108 rushes for 855 yards and eight touchdowns.
39:07
SPEAKER_03: And their third leading rusher is their quarterback, Greg uh Gagne Jr., 47 rushes, uh, 567 yards and six touchdowns.
39:15
SPEAKER_03: So he he likes to uh probably fake it a little bit or even go back and make it look like a pass and pull it and go.
39:22
SPEAKER_03: Their receivers, their number one receiver is Cameron Comstock.
39:25
SPEAKER_03: He's got nine receptions for 204 yards and four touchdowns.
39:30
SPEAKER_03: Their defense, they've got a lot of guys that are doing a lot of tackling.
39:33
SPEAKER_03: So I'm not sure if they're rotating guys or they just have uh a super aggressive team and they're flying to the ball.
39:39
SPEAKER_03: You got Cameron Dagger with 74 tackles, Mike Blaskey with 69 tackles, Jared Blinsky, who is their leading rusher, he comes in with 57 tackles, Colby Hayden, 44 tackles, and John Constanza, 36 tackles.
39:56
SPEAKER_03: So they they tend to be uh uh a pretty aggressive team, it looks like on defense and possibly swarm.
40:02
SPEAKER_03: And uh last last week in their championship game, just to show you how they rely on the run, in the first three quarters, they scored once in the first quarter on an 84-yard run by Balinski.
40:13
SPEAKER_03: In the second quarter, the quarterback Gagne Jr.
40:16
SPEAKER_03: had a 50-yard run.
40:18
SPEAKER_03: And then Balinski had it followed up with a 43-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and their opponent scored in the fourth quarter, uh, just a touchdown.
40:26
SPEAKER_03: So you can see that they're a predominantly running team.
40:28
SPEAKER_03: So Tioga needs to be ready in terms of running, uh, you know, stopping that run defense and then being ready for an occasional uh pass if they do throw.
40:39
SPEAKER_03: So TB, that'd be Tim Burney.
40:41
SPEAKER_03: Take it over and tell us about the Tyoga Tigers.
40:44
SPEAKER_00: Well, the Tigers come into this game at 9-0.
40:46
SPEAKER_00: They've outscored their opponents this season by an average of 49 to 9.
40:50
SPEAKER_00: That's 438 points for 83 points against.
40:54
SPEAKER_00: Uh, they won their ninth section title in the last 10 years, uh, excluding 2020, obviously.
41:00
SPEAKER_00: But so dating back to 2011, they've won nine uh out of the last 10.
41:06
SPEAKER_00: They beat Newark Valley 48 to 20.
41:08
SPEAKER_00: It was 14 to 14 at the half.
41:10
SPEAKER_00: First time this year that you know they've they've been, I think, ahead by less than 13 points at halftime.
41:17
SPEAKER_00: Uh they came right out of the gate, three three-play scoring drive, uh, 65-yard drive to go up uh 21-14, and they scored again uh in the third quarter, and first play of the fourth quarter was 35-14, just seconds into the fourth quarter.
41:31
SPEAKER_00: They they enforced their will, so to speak, in the second half.
41:34
SPEAKER_00: Tyoga or Newark Valley looked great in the first half, did a lot of things out of the box, uh, but Tyoga was able to adjust at halftime.
41:41
SPEAKER_00: So uh that means if they're 9-0 in section title games in the last 10 years, they've played in the state quarterfinals.
41:49
SPEAKER_00: This will be their ninth time in those first eight games.
41:51
SPEAKER_00: They're eight and oh against section three champions.
41:54
SPEAKER_00: They've outscored those section three champions by an average of 49 to 16 in those eight games.
41:59
SPEAKER_00: Uh, they've beaten Dulzville twice in this game.
42:02
SPEAKER_00: Uh, 2014, they won 46 to 22 over the Blue Devils, and in 2017, they won 46 to 16.
42:10
SPEAKER_00: Uh coming into the game this year, Tyoga's averaging in all 455.3 yards in total offense.
42:19
SPEAKER_00: Um, every offensive play coach, they are off averaging 11.8 yards per play.
42:27
SPEAKER_03: That'll win you some ballgames.
42:29
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no kidding.
42:30
SPEAKER_03: That'll win you some championships, too.
42:32
SPEAKER_00: On the ground, they're averaging 367.1 rushing yards per game.
42:37
SPEAKER_00: That tallies an 11.2 yards per carry.
42:41
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
42:42
SPEAKER_00: They're led by Emmett Wood, senior tailback.
42:45
SPEAKER_00: He has 1,440 yards.
42:47
SPEAKER_00: He's averaging 13.7 yards per carry.
42:50
SPEAKER_00: He scored 24 touchdowns.
42:52
SPEAKER_00: On his career, he has 6,672 yards and 89 touchdowns.
42:57
SPEAKER_00: That's in 39 games.
42:59
SPEAKER_00: So if you tell it off the top of my head, that's about 170 yards a game.
43:03
SPEAKER_00: Uh now remember, he lost four to six games last year because of COVID.
43:06
SPEAKER_00: They had one postponed this year.
43:09
SPEAKER_00: If you add those games into the mix, he'd be right around 8,000 yards and he'd be sniffing the section four um all-time mark set by former Tyoga standout Jesse Manuel, uh, 8,524 yards.
43:22
SPEAKER_00: Uh so an incredible career.
43:25
SPEAKER_00: Um, just big, fast.
43:28
SPEAKER_00: Will go out of his way to deliver a hit when he could run around people.
43:31
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, he's just got that mentality.
43:34
SPEAKER_00: But he's not a one-man gang either.
43:35
SPEAKER_00: Uh fullback, senior fullback Gavin Godfrey had 189 yards on 11 carries last week against Newark Valley.
43:42
SPEAKER_00: They were they were uh loading up to stop Emmett.
43:44
SPEAKER_00: They hit that quick fullback hitter.
43:46
SPEAKER_00: He went 90 yards for a touchdown on Tyo for Tyoga's first uh to put him up.
43:52
SPEAKER_00: I guess it was no, it tied the game at 7 7.
43:55
SPEAKER_00: So anyway, he has 691 yards and seven touchdowns this year.
43:58
SPEAKER_00: He's averaging over 10 yards a Carry.
44:01
SPEAKER_00: Quarterback, sophomore, Caden Bellas.
44:04
SPEAKER_00: He's rushed for 576 yards and nine touchdowns on just 47 carries this year.
44:10
SPEAKER_00: But Tyoga's not a one-trick pony.
44:12
SPEAKER_00: Bellas has completed 56% of his passes this season.
44:15
SPEAKER_00: He's 30 of 54 for 794 yards and 12 touchdowns without being intercepted.
44:24
SPEAKER_00: That's an average of 26.5 yards per completion.
44:29
SPEAKER_00: The uh his receivers, uh senior Kobe Whitmore, leads the team with eight catches, 140 yards, three TDs.
44:36
SPEAKER_00: He's really their main weapon in the short passing game.
44:38
SPEAKER_00: But Godfrey's got he only has two catches this year, but one was a 65-yard touchdown and the other was a 50-yard touchdown.
44:45
SPEAKER_00: And then Emmett Wood has four catches out of the backfield.
44:47
SPEAKER_00: So they're kind of utilizing the short passing game.
44:50
SPEAKER_00: Uh his deep threats are sophomore Evan Sickler, who's averaging 41 yards a catch.
44:55
SPEAKER_00: Uh, another sophomore, Ballantino Rossi, who's averaging 28 yards a catch.
45:00
SPEAKER_00: And another sophomore, uh Uzman Duncanson, who's averaging 33 and a half yards a catch.
45:05
SPEAKER_00: All three of those kids have two touchdown catches this year.
45:08
SPEAKER_00: They're both, they all have like they only have four or five catches, but Tayoga's only completed 30 passes.
45:14
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, he spreads the ball around.
45:15
SPEAKER_00: He doesn't have one go-to guy.
45:17
SPEAKER_00: He's got um, like I said, Whitmore with eight catches, and I think he's got four other kids with at least four or five.
45:25
SPEAKER_00: Um so defensively, they're only giving up nine points a game this year, and a couple of the touchdowns have been late in the game against the JV unit.
45:37
SPEAKER_00: So the first team is probably giving up, you know, uh maybe a score a game.
45:42
SPEAKER_00: Uh, and quite often this year has been no points.
45:47
SPEAKER_00: Uh they they led by really a linebacker trio that I think is as good as any in section four.
45:52
SPEAKER_00: Uh, senior Isaac Peterson, Emmett Wood, and Duncanson.
45:56
SPEAKER_00: Uh they they fly to the ball, uh, all very physical.
46:00
SPEAKER_00: Peterson hits like a truck.
46:02
SPEAKER_00: Emmett Wood is just so fast.
46:03
SPEAKER_00: Duncanson, the same thing.
46:05
SPEAKER_00: They get to the ball carriers, they get to quarterbacks.
46:08
SPEAKER_00: Um, you I think any success the teams have had this year has been between the tackles.
46:14
SPEAKER_00: Um a lot of times this year, including Newark Valley in last week's game, their first possession, they had some quick hitters, they got some yards, they scored.
46:23
SPEAKER_00: Tyoga tends to, over the past Iello's reign, he'll they'll their teams will give up a score on their first possession, and then they really tighten it down.
46:31
SPEAKER_00: They make the adjustments, and after that, teams you know struggle to do much.
46:36
SPEAKER_00: Um, another big hitter for Tyoga is Gavin Godfrey in the secondary.
46:40
SPEAKER_00: Comes up, makes a lot of big hits, uh, really supports on the run.
46:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh, their defensive line does a nice job of uh tying up uh linemen, keep them off the second level.
46:51
SPEAKER_00: So their linebackers are able to get to the ball.
46:53
SPEAKER_00: Kids like Josh Schnell and Chris Walsh, a couple freshmen up front, Tate McAuley and Garrett Godfrey be Gavin, the fullback's younger brother.
47:00
SPEAKER_00: Um, they've really done a nice job this year of uh allowing those linebackers to have the freedom to get to the ball carriers.
47:06
SPEAKER_00: Um, and then they've also put a lot of pressure on quarterbacks, but a lot, you know, when you're up by three, four scores and you know the other team's uh gonna throw the ball, you can put your ears back and go.
47:17
SPEAKER_00: Wood's done a nice job of getting to the quarterback.
47:19
SPEAKER_00: Matt Watson, uh sophomore, Carson Sandoni, uh, three of the guys have really done a nice job pressuring quarterbacks.
47:25
SPEAKER_00: They're all obviously quick kids.
47:27
SPEAKER_00: Uh Tyoga's not a real big team, but boy, are they athletic.
47:31
SPEAKER_00: Um and and the scary part about it is in the past, teams have been able to throw the ball a little bit on Tyoga.
47:37
SPEAKER_00: Uh, this may be the best secondary that uh Coach Iowa has had with Godfrey, uh Sickler, Whitmore, um, even Emmett Wood going back at cornerback at times.
47:47
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I think, you know, I know Dollsville's big.
47:50
SPEAKER_00: If they can, if they can pound the ball between the tackles and keep the ball away from Tyoga, uh, they may have a chance.
47:56
SPEAKER_00: That's what Newark Valley, that's how Newark Valley kept the game close.
47:59
SPEAKER_00: They had a um couple long possessions.
48:02
SPEAKER_00: One didn't, they fumbled it away at Tyoga's 10 right before Godfrey went for 90 yards.
48:06
SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think that's the only chance you really got to beat, and that Dolzville's got to beat this team is if they can put together some seven, eight-minute drives.
48:14
SPEAKER_00: But then on the other side, they got to get some stops.
48:17
SPEAKER_00: And very few teams have been able to stop Tyoga more than once in a game this year.
48:22
SPEAKER_00: And that's how prolific their offense has been.
48:24
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I've been in several games where they've scored eight touchdowns, and the only possession they didn't score is when they took a knee at the end in victory's formation.
48:32
SPEAKER_00: So just uh, you know, an embarrassment of riches as far as athletes for a class D team.
48:36
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it sounds like they're very thorough.
48:38
SPEAKER_03: And you hit the nail, I believe, on the head with Dollsville's needs to play a little bit of keep away by the same token, keep the chains moving and keep the clock moving.
48:47
SPEAKER_03: But the other thing is from their perspective on defense, it's almost like picking your poison.
48:52
SPEAKER_03: You know, do we load the box to stop Emmett and and the rest of the team, you know, carrying the ball, or do we uh play coverage, or do we do some kind of combo and we take some chances?
49:03
SPEAKER_03: And then that's where you start, you know, kind of hurting yourself.
49:05
SPEAKER_03: If you start getting to that point where you got to take chances, and then you get some some throws that are over the top, you know, uh, or some runs getting busted through because you have a tight uh tight box.
49:16
SPEAKER_03: So it's gonna be an interesting game, nonetheless.
49:18
SPEAKER_03: So, Tim, that was great information on that.
49:20
SPEAKER_03: Now we're gonna take and go to the eight-player classification where Spencer Vinette and Cander is going to play Spack and Kill.
49:28
SPEAKER_03: Now they're out of section nine, which is a little bit southeast of uh southeast of us down in the Poughkeepsie area.
49:36
SPEAKER_03: And um, that game is gonna be at Binghamton on uh Friday night at seven o'clock.
49:41
SPEAKER_03: So they they're the current section nine champs.
49:45
SPEAKER_03: That's the Spack and Kill Spartans.
49:47
SPEAKER_03: They come in at seven and one record.
49:49
SPEAKER_03: They've got a uh new coach, and he's not just a new coach.
49:52
SPEAKER_03: My understanding is that he's a first-time coach.
49:54
SPEAKER_03: His name is Josh Riley, and he's done really good things down there.
49:58
SPEAKER_03: They started off the season losing top-seeded Sullivan West, and they actually got a chance to avenge that in their Section 9 championship game last week.
50:09
SPEAKER_03: Um, and that was the only loss that they had.
50:11
SPEAKER_03: And it wasn't just that they came out and they won the game.
50:14
SPEAKER_03: They actually, it was in what I call an old-fashioned thrashing.
50:17
SPEAKER_03: It was 54 to 12 that they uh re-avenged that loss against the top seed Sullivanville West.
50:25
SPEAKER_03: So I know Coach Josh Riley's got his backing skill Spartans, obviously playing um good football at the right time of the season because this is when you want to peak is when you're you know in the playoffs and when it's you know win or go home situation.
50:40
SPEAKER_03: They actually have uh a lot of multiple threats, and that's what their real strength is.
50:46
SPEAKER_03: It's very similar to how you described the Tioga Tigers.
50:49
SPEAKER_03: I think Spack and Kill is some of the same.
50:51
SPEAKER_03: I'm not sure where the level of play or the quality of play is, but they that's what they hang their hat on by doing having multiple threats, multiple formations, and and kind of keeping the defense on their heels, not really knowing what's coming, and you know, their makes their alignments and and responsibilities a little bit difficult to do.
51:11
SPEAKER_03: But um they've held opponents to 15 a game.
51:15
SPEAKER_03: Um, and they've also averaged 37 points a game.
51:19
SPEAKER_03: So that's really good numbers in terms of uh quality football and winning football games when you really only have to win by one point, correct?
51:27
SPEAKER_03: So when they're when when you're when you're holding opponents to 15 and you're scoring 37, that that's that's pretty good.
51:35
SPEAKER_03: And um the Bulldogs run for more than 2,000 yards in only seven games this year.
51:40
SPEAKER_03: So they do have you know the ability to run the ball.
51:44
SPEAKER_03: They really have an outstanding linebacker, Cole Dominic.
51:47
SPEAKER_03: He's made 15 tackles, including several for a loss.
51:50
SPEAKER_03: That's and that's how they contain the run.
51:53
SPEAKER_03: So that's the uh the skinny on spack and skill again out of section nine.
51:58
SPEAKER_03: Gonna play Spencer Vanette and Candor.
52:00
SPEAKER_03: T B tell us what you know about uh Spencer Vanette and Cander.
52:04
SPEAKER_00: Well, interesting thought here before I get into the to the Spencer Vinette and Candor Eagles.
52:10
SPEAKER_00: Uh, during the season this year, I I I tend to be a little chatty on the sideline with uh officials, and I I know most I know most of them.
52:18
SPEAKER_00: Uh huh.
52:18
SPEAKER_00: I started chatting up a gentleman at the uh I was in the Edison eight-man football game, and I think they're they were playing Newfield as the last game of the year, and I didn't know the official, but we started chatting a little bit, and we talked about you know the size of the field that they're playing on, and he made the comment that I and I didn't know it would come back to mean anything to me, but he made the comment that in section nine they play the numbers.
52:43
SPEAKER_03: Oh, you mean they play this the shorter field, right?
52:46
SPEAKER_00: They so that where the numbers are on the field, that's out, and I said that it'd be easy enough to put a line there.
52:51
SPEAKER_00: He said, No, it's just the officials' judgment, you know, which is you know, kind of, but anyway, so spack and kill coming out of section nine.
52:59
SPEAKER_00: I'm curious if they actually do that down there, if that affects the game up here, because they're if they come up to Binghamton and play, it's gonna be on the a regulation field, I would think.
53:09
SPEAKER_00: So I, you know, I'll be curious to first of all, I'll have to look in to see if that's actually what they do.
53:14
SPEAKER_00: I don't I have no reason to doubt the the gentleman.
53:16
SPEAKER_00: So it would make be interesting to see if that's the case, how much of an effect that has on the game.
53:21
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's an interesting point because I believe the eight-player official field size is like 80 yards long, you know, with 42 wide or something like that.
53:32
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, with the same end zone depth, I understand.
53:34
SPEAKER_03: But yeah, that would uh that to me that would make a difference, especially from the defensive perspective, because you know, you're used to running so far to to run a guy out of bounds or pursuit angles, things like that.
53:47
SPEAKER_03: That's that would definitely uh play in that game.
53:49
SPEAKER_03: So that was that's uh something very interesting.
53:51
SPEAKER_03: We'll see see what the result of your research is on that.
53:55
SPEAKER_00: So here's uh I'm gonna call them Speck just to save a little time.
53:58
SPEAKER_00: That's how they're that's how they're called here, the Spencer Vinette and Kander Eagles.
54:01
SPEAKER_00: So it's Speck.
54:02
SPEAKER_00: So, anyway, talk about video game numbers.
54:04
SPEAKER_00: They've outscored their opponents this season by an average of 56 to 5 in their 8-0 record.
54:10
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, they played Groton in the Section 4 finals, and Groton entered the game nearly as dominant as far as uh you know their opposition, and the Eagles rolled to a 50-12, 50 to 12 win in the in the championship games.
54:24
SPEAKER_00: You know, just an incredible season they've had to this point.
54:27
SPEAKER_00: Senior Devin Beach, you know, talk about a man child.
54:30
SPEAKER_00: He he is uh a men among boys on the field.
54:34
SPEAKER_00: It's amazing.
54:35
SPEAKER_00: He averages uh 22.6 yards per carry.
54:39
SPEAKER_00: He's rushed for not he's rushed for nine touchdowns and 565 yards on just 25 carries this year this year.
54:47
SPEAKER_00: And then they also put him at tight end or in the slot at times, and he averages 28.2 yards per catch.
54:54
SPEAKER_00: He has nine catches this season, seven of them for touchdowns.
54:58
SPEAKER_00: Wow.
54:59
SPEAKER_00: Then you get to their quarterback, Nick Thomas.
55:01
SPEAKER_00: He leads the team with 614 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.
55:06
SPEAKER_00: That's 13.3 yards per carry.
55:09
SPEAKER_00: He's also completed 19 of 44 passes, or excuse me, 29 of 44 passes, 66 for 639 yards and 13 touchdowns without being intercepted.
55:20
SPEAKER_00: Then you get to Hunter Haynes.
55:22
SPEAKER_00: He's rushed for 527 yards and six touchdowns, 12 and a half yards per carry.
55:28
SPEAKER_00: He leads the team with 10 catches, uh, has 171 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
55:34
SPEAKER_00: So then you get a little bit off the radar, and they got a young man named Logan Jewell who comes in.
55:39
SPEAKER_00: He plays a little bit, um they'll put him in here and there during uh when the game is on the line, but he gets a lot of time at the end of the game as well.
55:49
SPEAKER_00: He has 10 carries this year for 129 yards and a touchdown, and three catches for 127 yards and one TD.
55:56
SPEAKER_00: And again, like I said, he gets a lot of his playing time when the game's on the line.
56:00
SPEAKER_00: So if you if you break down their numbers a little bit, they've had 192 carries this season.
56:06
SPEAKER_00: They've rushed for 2,318 yards and 34 touchdowns.
56:12
SPEAKER_00: They have 45 passes for 643 yards and 13 touchdowns.
56:17
SPEAKER_00: So that's 12 and a half yards per play.
56:20
SPEAKER_00: And they're doing that running less than 30 offensive plays a game.
56:25
SPEAKER_00: I I was at a game this year, they won 60 to nothing, and they ran less plays than the team they beat 60 to nothing because they were scoring on one and two plays uh just about every time they touch the ball.
56:42
SPEAKER_00: And they are, you know, this whole game is dedicated to creating one-on-one, and you got to be able to make a tackle defensively in the open field.
56:50
SPEAKER_00: Well, they've got three or four kids who either because of Beach's size and athleticism or the fact and Nick Thomas is a big boy for the quarterback.
56:59
SPEAKER_00: Hunter Haynes is really quick, and if you don't wrap him up, he's gone.
57:02
SPEAKER_00: You know, so they've they've made a uh living this year on one-on-one situations in the open field, and um, they get the best of it nearly every time.
57:13
SPEAKER_00: You know, defensively, they've given up five points a game, and a couple of those touchdowns this year have been late in games.
57:19
SPEAKER_00: Uh Groton scored one other touchdowns was in the last three minutes of the game last week when it was 50 to 6.
57:25
SPEAKER_00: Um, Beach again leads the team 36 tackles, eight and a half of those tackles for losses.
57:30
SPEAKER_00: Uh Seth McBride is second on the team with tackles, and he also leads the team in pass breakups.
57:35
SPEAKER_00: Tyler Stahl has seven and a half tackles for losses.
57:38
SPEAKER_00: John Hammond, four and a half tackles for losses.
57:41
SPEAKER_00: Those kids are on the defensive line.
57:42
SPEAKER_00: Uh, they've got another um uh defensive lineman and Elliot Walter, who is as good as any lineman probably in the section, um, regardless of whether you're playing eight man or eleven man.
57:59
SPEAKER_00: Uh, he he'd be in the uh in the probably first or second team, all section four, if you even, you know, regardless, like I said, of eight of man or eleven man.
58:08
SPEAKER_00: Uh, these kids, these kids could play.
58:10
SPEAKER_00: You know, if they had, they would have been a fun team to watch on the 11-man field as well if they had a little more depth.
58:15
SPEAKER_00: They've only got 15, 16 kids on the roster.
58:18
SPEAKER_00: Um, but they are playing with a full JV team this year.
58:21
SPEAKER_00: They played 11-man JV and they've got big numbers on the modified.
58:25
SPEAKER_00: So it's my understanding uh that they'll jump back into 11-man football next year, probably end up flip-flopping with um Watkins Glenn Odessa Montour, who only has one ninth grader on their entire roster with like 17 seniors.
58:39
SPEAKER_00: So the talk up there is that they'll go into eight-man football next year.
58:42
SPEAKER_00: So they'll probably just flip-flop with Speck next year.
58:46
SPEAKER_03: No, um, I uh was a defensive coordinator by trade, but I'm thinking about the perspective of a defensive coordinator trying to stop any of these teams, pretty much any of these teams that we've talked about today.
58:59
SPEAKER_03: That kind of takes the fun out of it.
59:02
SPEAKER_03: These these offenses are something else.
59:05
SPEAKER_03: The numbers you're you're giving our listeners, it's just it's amazing.
59:10
SPEAKER_03: Uh, the skill set with these uh student athletes.
59:13
SPEAKER_03: And the it's almost I almost envision the scoreboard like a uh a meter in a taxi cab where it just kind of keeps going.
59:24
SPEAKER_03: But this is a great testament to uh not only section four, but the the section three and the one section nine team that we're playing, these coaches and their their staffs and the whole community are doing a really great job because you don't have these kind of programs without the community involvement.
59:40
SPEAKER_00: No, and you know, and like I like I said, you know, Tyoga has dominated Class D for the last decade.
59:45
SPEAKER_00: You know, Dullesville is a pretty storied program in Section Three.
59:49
SPEAKER_00: If they're in Class D, if they're not the number one team as far as Section Three titles, they're in the top, they're in the discussion anyway.
59:57
SPEAKER_00: I know at one point they had more Section Three titles than any Class D team.
1:00:01
SPEAKER_00: So I mean, you know, this is you know, and the team they beat last week at around deck, I don't think it ever won one before.
1:00:08
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it goes there's something to be said for you know that type of history, sure.
1:00:13
SPEAKER_03: And and that that'll go right in hand in hand what I'm talking about.
1:00:16
SPEAKER_03: They've got the support behind them as well.
1:00:19
SPEAKER_00: Sounds good to me, coach.
1:00:20
SPEAKER_00: Thanks much for all as always.
1:00:22
SPEAKER_03: Yep, thank you.
1:00:22
SPEAKER_03: You do a great job.
1:00:23
SPEAKER_03: So that kind of wraps it up and puts a bow on it for all our listeners, and so they're all set to enjoy the state quarterfinals.
