- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Tuesday and time for the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
- 0:03Speaker 1: We get together with Jim Moore each and every week
- 0:05Speaker 1: following Husky football on the weekends. And coach Yukon had
- 0:11Speaker 1: a chance, I mean a real chance against Duke after
- 0:14Speaker 1: that tremendous comeback from seventeen down. Not many teams can
- 0:19Speaker 1: do that. LSU, I think pulled it off at South
- 0:22Speaker 1: Carolina over the weekend. But that's a big hill to climb.
- 0:26Speaker 1: You guys were in a deep hole there in the
- 0:28Speaker 1: first half. First of all, the sentiment on the sideline.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It can be tough when the other team's got three
- 0:35Speaker 1: scores on you and you haven't got anything on the
- 0:37Speaker 1: board yet. What were you sensing on your sideline there
- 0:40Speaker 1: when things didn't look great in the second quarter.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well, resolve a lot of resolve energy and we don't
- 0:48Speaker 2: look at the scoreboard, or at least we try not to.
- 0:50Speaker 2: You just got to play the play in front of
- 0:52Speaker 2: you and try to you know, stat good plays on
- 0:55Speaker 2: top of each other. If you're going to be influenced
- 0:58Speaker 2: by external factors and you're going to be very inconsistent,
- 1:01Speaker 2: and that's something that we're trying to avoid.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that Duke team came in unbeaten, really good defense.
- 1:07Speaker 1: We talked about it last week on the show. You
- 1:10Speaker 1: were able to do some good things on offense. I thought,
- 1:12Speaker 1: moved the ball, scored, got the lead. Let's go back
- 1:15Speaker 1: to that defensive play that kind of turned the game
- 1:18Speaker 1: around for you. Two. For me, a Brown gets up
- 1:21Speaker 1: and I love when linebackers and d lineman get their
- 1:24Speaker 1: hands up in the quarterbacks passing lanes and create distractions.
- 1:28Speaker 1: And that one he not only created a distraction, he
- 1:32Speaker 1: created a turnover and he and Langston Hardy had a
- 1:35Speaker 1: nice run down the field from sixty four yards out.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Well, it was something we'd worked on all week, that
- 1:43Speaker 2: particular formation. How too, he was going to enter, you know,
- 1:47Speaker 2: how he's going to react to the quarterback if he
- 1:49Speaker 2: was unblocked, and he just executed it like you're supposed
- 1:52Speaker 2: to execute it. He didn't leave his feet and jump
- 1:54Speaker 2: and give the quarterback a chance to scramble. He just
- 1:56Speaker 2: ran right through it, got his hands up and then Langston,
- 2:00Speaker 2: you know, because he was giving good effort on the
- 2:01Speaker 2: other side, was there to scoop it up and look
- 2:04Speaker 2: pretty good running into the end zone. You know, he
- 2:06Speaker 2: looked like a like a track athlete. So uh, you know,
- 2:10Speaker 2: you got to you gotta make plays like that. That
- 2:12Speaker 2: was our first takeaway of the year. And you know,
- 2:14Speaker 2: we we've got to take the football away. You know,
- 2:17Speaker 2: that's part of being a good defense. And I've been emphasizing,
- 2:19Speaker 2: you know, the doing your job and the play entry
- 2:21Speaker 2: and the leverage and the tackling, but it's also about
- 2:24Speaker 2: taking the football away. So it was good to finally
- 2:26Speaker 2: get one. And then you know, hopefully they come in bunches.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You know, oftentimes they do. You know, the gate kind
- 2:32Speaker 2: of opens and and here we go, So hopefully that's
- 2:35Speaker 2: the case.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Yeah, you almost had another one too, an interception. I
- 2:39Speaker 1: think camp Chadwick had a real chance to pick one
- 2:41Speaker 1: off later in the game. Uh So, obviously we talk
- 2:45Speaker 1: about turnovers every week. That was a big one and
- 2:48Speaker 1: that really catapulted the team. And at halftime, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 1: there's always something to be worked on and strategy wise, well,
- 2:57Speaker 1: what what did you say to the team when you
- 2:59Speaker 1: got in there. I mean, you got back into game,
- 3:02Speaker 1: but you're still down ten points.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Well, I mean our messaging doesn't change a lot. It's
- 3:07Speaker 2: about you know, executing your assignment, doing your job, putting
- 3:12Speaker 2: pressure on your opponent, living in the moment, you know, fighting,
- 3:16Speaker 2: being physical, being violent. You know, it's a lot of
- 3:19Speaker 2: times it's just it's minor adjustments that you need to
- 3:22Speaker 2: make schematically, but your mindset should always be the same.
- 3:25Speaker 2: So it's just kind of reinforcing the things that you
- 3:28Speaker 2: know that you believe are important as a program. And
- 3:33Speaker 2: you know, if you were in there with us, week
- 3:35Speaker 2: in and week out with me for most of my career,
- 3:39Speaker 2: the messaging doesn't change a lot. You know, you want
- 3:41Speaker 2: to be consistent. The things that are important remain important,
- 3:44Speaker 2: whether you're ahead, behind in a tie. You know, whether
- 3:47Speaker 2: you're fighting your way back or trying to hold someone off.
- 3:50Speaker 2: The mindset has to remain the same. And so consistent messaging,
- 3:53Speaker 2: I believe is really important. And so we just continue
- 3:56Speaker 2: to stress the things that we believe are going to
- 3:59Speaker 2: help us have a chance to well.
- 4:02Speaker 1: You know, I'm talking to a lot of Yukon fans
- 4:04Speaker 1: over the weekend after the game. They really like what
- 4:07Speaker 1: they're seeing. This team looks like it's improving. I think
- 4:10Speaker 1: you said in your press conference this morning, we're making progress,
- 4:15Speaker 1: but you fail to win. So how do you take that?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Where you are week three now into week four and
- 4:22Speaker 1: take another step forward.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Every week has to be independent of the week that
- 4:28Speaker 2: you just had, whether you win a big game, where
- 4:31Speaker 2: you lose a tough game. You have to compete with
- 4:34Speaker 2: yourself and your potential every single week, and you have
- 4:38Speaker 2: to take the lessons learned from the game that you
- 4:42Speaker 2: just played and applying going forward, whether they were things
- 4:44Speaker 2: you did well or things you need to do better.
- 4:47Speaker 2: But you have to have the same approach each week,
- 4:50Speaker 2: and that's to maximize every opportunity to get better. That's
- 4:53Speaker 2: every play of every practice. That's to have the right mindset.
- 4:56Speaker 2: That's to make sure that you're taking care of the details,
- 4:58Speaker 2: doing the work. I believe that that's the way that
- 5:00Speaker 2: you can avoid you know, inconsistency and up and down performances.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I believe that's the way that you can continually get better.
- 5:07Speaker 2: And our guys believe that as well. And we really
- 5:11Speaker 2: don't have bad practices. That doesn't mean there aren't part
- 5:14Speaker 2: of practices that are not you know, perfect and we
- 5:18Speaker 2: but that's also part of practice learning how to overcome,
- 5:21Speaker 2: you know, things that aren't going well for you and
- 5:23Speaker 2: get back on track. So once again, it's just kind
- 5:26Speaker 2: of a consistency of approach. I think that that helped you.
- 5:29Speaker 2: It's you know a lot of people call it the
- 5:31Speaker 2: you know what your process is? You know, to me,
- 5:34Speaker 2: it's who we are, it's how we do things, is
- 5:36Speaker 2: what we believe in.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I remember well when Dick Vermeil was going went to
- 5:41Speaker 1: the Eagles and he was talking about that. I don't
- 5:43Speaker 1: know if he used that word, but anyway, he got
- 5:45Speaker 1: it going in the right direction. Philly went crazy. He
- 5:49Speaker 1: was using things words like that process. We got to
- 5:52Speaker 1: work on what we're doing. We got to get a process,
- 5:54Speaker 1: we got to get better. I mean that stuff has
- 5:57Speaker 1: been going on since the beginning of time. As in
- 5:59Speaker 1: it with coaches.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we all want the same result, which
- 6:05Speaker 2: is to win. But you know what is going to
- 6:08Speaker 2: create the best opportunity for you to win, Well, that's
- 6:11Speaker 2: doing the work. That's making sure that you are taking
- 6:14Speaker 2: care of them minute details, and that's creating the right mindset.
- 6:18Speaker 2: And that's the same every week. And you just got
- 6:21Speaker 2: to continue to drill that into your players and into
- 6:24Speaker 2: your program. And if you do that, then I think
- 6:27Speaker 2: you always have a chance to get better. And you know,
- 6:30Speaker 2: I was lucky enough as a little little boy to
- 6:34Speaker 2: be around coach for Meal, and he's always been a
- 6:36Speaker 2: mentor to me. My dad worked for him at UCLA
- 6:39Speaker 2: when I was I don't know, twelve years old, so
- 6:42Speaker 2: I've known him forever. And you know, he's always had
- 6:46Speaker 2: some pretty darn good words of wisdom if you listen
- 6:48Speaker 2: closely to the man, that's for sure.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a great coach. Loved him. Yeah, all right,
- 6:52Speaker 1: we'll be back with Jim Moore. We've got a lot
- 6:54Speaker 1: of a lot to talk about. Run game was good,
- 6:56Speaker 1: a lot of things happened on the plus side for
- 6:59Speaker 1: the Huskies at Duke and they hope to carry it
- 7:01Speaker 1: over against Florida Atlantic and a night game on Saturday
- 7:04Speaker 1: Night at the Rent. This is the Yukon Football Coaching
- 7:07Speaker 1: Show on Learfield.
