• 1:38
Speaker 4: Well, we've had a heat wave here for the last three days, so I can honestly say the only thing that was up for me was that I was playing cards. I played Canasta one day and I played bridge another day because you really couldn't be outdoors at all, and I couldn't meet you to do anything. It was just too hot. So I took a taxi from my apartment to where I played cards and I came back and I played with my girlfriend. We had a good time.
• 2:07
I didn't lose too much this week, so I was sort of ahead of the game, but you really couldn't walk on the street. You could have fried an egg It really, on the really bad, but it broke today. Today, actually I'm wearing a sweater. So, you can imagine because yesterday you didn't want to wear anything.
• 2:23
Speaker 3: No, literally it was hard to go outside even for a second.
• 2:26
Speaker 4: You couldn't breathe. You really couldn't. It was very unhealthy. And they had all these wonderful cooling centers here. And of course you voted this week.
• 2:34
So they had cooling centers all over the place for people and they even allowed water for the first time. I think the governor did something.
• 2:43
Speaker 3: It could curb your enthusiasm when they gave waters on the voting line.
• 2:47
Speaker 4: And you're not allowed to in Georgia. Right?
• 2:49
  Speaker 3: Only in Georgia.
• 2:50
Speaker 4: No. I think in a lot of places, you're not allowed to give food, but I think they they rescinded that. Yeah. And they certainly needed water for people and I
• 2:57
Speaker 3: just wonder, though, like, if it deterred a lot of people from voting because it was so hot.
• 3:01
Speaker 4: It might've. It really might've, but the voting now takes place in so many days. Really, when I was younger and your age, we used to vote on Tuesday or whatever the day was, and that was the voting. And you either went or you didn't go. Yeah.
• 3:15
Now it could be for a week or ten days.
• 3:18
  Speaker 3: There's excuse.
• 3:19
Speaker 4: Early there's no really excuse now.
• 3:20
Speaker 3: But I still did vote on the election day. Okay. So big weekend coming up. We have my boyfriend's birthday and my dad's birthday
• 3:30
  Speaker 4: Yeah. Very nice.
• 3:31
Speaker 3: The same day. There's so many birthday coincidences in our family, like you, you mom, and and Poppy three days in a row. Right. So, like, so funny how that has happened.
• 3:41
Speaker 5: Just just lucky. It's a very big gift week.
• 3:44
Speaker 4: Yeah. It's a very big gift weekend.
• 3:47
Speaker 3: Yeah. I hope Zach likes his gift. I'm trying to think when this is coming out. Oh, after the fact. Okay.
• 3:54
So I got him like a watch band for his Apple Watch because he wears that like every day.
• 3:59
  Speaker 4: That's fun.
• 3:59
Speaker 3: And then also a little more jokey gift, this little like robot thingy that like he could take to LA, and it'll just follow him around, and I can talk into it. It's like
• 4:10
  Speaker 5: that's it. Oh, he's die he's dying
• 4:12
Speaker 4: to hear your voice all day long talking in his ear.
• 4:14
Speaker 3: Well, he can just look on Excuse My Grandma. Exactly.
• 4:16
  Speaker 4: That's a better idea.
• 4:17
Speaker 3: But I think it's a funny That's a fun gift. And then dad organized, like, two different dinners.
• 4:23
Speaker 4: Your father loves to organize a dinner. Yeah. I mean, but you know what? We're a lot of people, so you need to organize. When you're a lot of people, especially for Friday night, the restaurants don't want to really take it, especially out in the Well, nowhere anywhere in New York as well.
• 4:39
They only want to take like six people max. So, it's very difficult unless you can get rid of some of your relatives. It's very hard to say, No, you stay home. So you just go where they take you and it'll be lovely.
• 4:51
Speaker 3: You're coming to the dinner Friday? Yes. Because that's like most of the family
• 4:56
Speaker 4: is going? Yeah, I think the family is going. I'm from me.
• 4:59
Speaker 3: Okay. That'll be a big dinner.
• 5:01
  Speaker 4: That'll be nice.
• 5:02
Speaker 3: That'll be nice. What'd you get dad?
• 5:07
Speaker 4: Oh, this is it. Right. I got him he likes these t shirts. I got him last year with a collar. Oh, okay.
• 5:14
And I got him four different colors this year to refresh his wardrobe.
• 5:17
  Speaker 3: Okay. Good.
• 5:18
Speaker 4: Yeah. He likes that brand.
• 5:20
Speaker 3: I was looking at because I was thinking with all the birthday similarities, if there must be some compatibility chart thing with the horoscopes going on because well, do you know if you and Poppy are compatible? We're not compatible. You're both Tauruses, so I looked it up.
• 5:38
Speaker 4: And so is mom. It's terrible. Yeah. Three Tauruses under one roof is really dreadful.
• 5:43
Speaker 3: But I this felt right. Like, tell me, the love between two Tauruses won't be something to write romance novels about, which suits these fixed earth signs just fine. Right. Taurus is not interested in sappy love affairs. They prefer stability and safety above all else, making them a great couple.
• 5:58
Both are traditional home bodies who seek a life partner.
• 6:01
Speaker 4: Oh, so that was that was exactly right. Right.
• 6:03
Speaker 3: And it continues. But I I feel like that too. And then mine with Zach's, I guess it's also my dad. But tell me if you feel like this is our personalities. Okay.
• 6:14
My son is in Pisces. Right. Meaning, I'm fundamentally dreamy, insightful, and in your own world. You exist on a chaotic plane of the divine that's not at all material. Your rich imagination endows you with a strong intuition for hidden emotional currents, which you take offense wait.
• 6:30
When you take offense, it is deeply, and you aren't necessarily interested in reconciliation. Their son is in cancer, meaning they're fundamentally sensitive, nurturing, and their emotions may seem like a burden to them. They're deeply committed to their relationships and being good to the people they care about. They may have trouble with self discipline. This is a good pairing.
• 6:47
You're both deeply emotional and caring people who get each other on an innate level. You share empathy for each other so much that personal boundaries dissolve. It keeps going.
• 6:57
Speaker 4: But need to tell everybody It's kind of long. Sounds good. Sounds good. Yeah.
• 7:01
  Speaker 3: I don't know. I I like this stuff. Okay. Okay. Let's talk about July 4.
• 7:08
Speaker 4: Well, it's a big weekend, and, I think, actually, July 4 is gonna be beautiful. The up until July 4 because I'm gonna really try to stay out in, East Hampton for the whole week because after this week of heat, I I really need a respite. I'm gonna go stay out there for a few days. I I think the third, fourth, and fifth is supposed to be beautiful. It's supposed to be raining this weekend.
• 7:30
So you know what? What are we gonna do? There's nothing we can do about the weather. Hopefully
• 7:35
  Speaker 3: a plan?
• 7:35
Speaker 4: Well, have a couple of parties actually. I have a big party. Always have parties. No, but this is a big one with a couple 100 people and she wants everyone to dress like on the red carpet.
• 7:46
Speaker 3: Oh, like black tie?
• 7:48
Speaker 4: No, nobody's going black. I hope nobody's going black tie. Just to put on be a little spiffier than usual.
• 7:53
  Speaker 3: What are wearing?
• 7:54
Speaker 4: I'm gonna wear a pretty sweat the same thing I always wear, white pants and a pretty but in But that's dressing pair carpet. It's red enough for me. Okay. And a pair and a pretty sweater set.
• 8:04
  Speaker 3: Interesting.
• 8:05
Speaker 4: I'm not getting that fluffy. It's on my party.
• 8:07
Speaker 3: Fair. Okay. That's exciting.
• 8:11
Speaker 4: Yes, it is nice. The only thing I watched because I now scroll on Instagram, I love to see what different people are doing And all the people who are out, I guess in suburban areas are all complaining it's been so wet that they've been wearing their high heels at weddings and they're getting the grass stained. So now they have plastic, they have plastic things they put on their heels to wear so the shoes don't get bruised. Clever.
• 8:38
Speaker 3: I think there are ads
• 8:39
Speaker 4: on- There was somebody who had a wedding this past weekend and she was wearing it under her wedding gown.
• 8:43
Speaker 3: Yeah. I feel like you see it though.
• 8:46
Speaker 4: Not if it's clear.
• 8:47
  Speaker 3: I
• 8:48
Speaker 4: know. You probably do see it, but under a long dress, it wouldn't Right. Matter of
• 8:52
  Speaker 3: I guess so.
• 8:53
Speaker 4: Very clever, whoever because I know they have those kinds of things for the bottoms of chairs, so you move the chairs and it doesn't squeak, but I've never seen it on on heels.
• 9:01
Speaker 3: Yeah. I I think I've seen I it have two girlfriends coming to stay for the weekend.
• 9:06
  Speaker 4: That's fun.
• 9:07
Speaker 3: I feel like in previous years, I would have had every day and night planned and, like, made sure I had parties I knew we were going to like, tickets that you would have to get to a club or a bar or something. Now I feel like I
• 9:25
  Speaker 4: You're chilling out?
• 9:25
Speaker 3: I don't know if I'm chilling out, if I'm, like, taking on some grandma energy.
• 9:30
Speaker 4: Oh, take on grandma energy, please. Grandma's looking to go out. We don't wanna stay home. But you better make reservations for when the girls come out or if they wanna go to exercise class. I hope they made plans because those classes get packed.
• 9:45
Speaker 3: I don't know about that one. Oh. I feel like none of us really do. I mean, Oh, some of my friends do, but my house, my rules, no workouts. Okay.
• 9:52
Alright. No. But I feel like the dinner situation, I probably should figure out. I think it's just getting early twenties compared to late twenties. Like, even looking through my camera roll and see and I was looking at past July 4, and I was, like, wearing American flag stuff or red, white, and blue.
• 10:09
And I was at these, like think it's giant day parties
• 10:12
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 10:13
Speaker 3: At people's houses or on the beach or whatever. There's definitely none of that. The biggest party I've gone to recently are probably 30 people, and it's
• 10:20
Speaker 4: a dinner party. Well, why that? Because I think as you get older, it sort of calms down a little bit. You're more coupled and it's more sedate.
• 10:27
Speaker 3: Yeah, but I guess in your 20s, you drank a little bit.
• 10:32
Speaker 4: I drank a lot. I used to drink a lot of wine when I was in my 20s.
• 10:36
Speaker 3: So was that like party girl era?
• 10:38
Speaker 4: No, it wasn't party girl era. I didn't drink when I was single. First of I was never single. By the time I was 21, I was married.
• 10:45
Speaker 3: You still got drunk.
• 10:47
Speaker 4: I got drunk when I got married. I never got drunk in school ever because I never really drank, but we used to go on these wine tastings and somehow it tasted very good and I kept saying I never pushed the glass away. So it was a little too much. So I abused that, but I haven't done that in maybe twenty five years. But
• 11:07
Speaker 3: since you had mom at 21 22? 23. Oh, 23. She said she remembers when she was younger, you were like growing up in the toilet.
• 11:15
  Speaker 5: Yes, because
• 11:15
Speaker 3: because that wasn't on a wine tour.
• 11:17
Speaker 4: No, that was probably in New York where we
• 11:18
  Speaker 3: used to
• 11:19
Speaker 4: go to these restaurants and your grandfather would order a big bottle of red wine and you would manage to drink it. Oy. Yes. Well He doesn't do it anymore either.
• 11:28
Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess so.
• 11:30
Speaker 4: I like a glass of rose if I'm sitting and it's warm out. It's lovely just to sit outside and look at the boats or the the flowers and have a glass of rose.
• 11:41
Speaker 3: I feel like looking on social media at what other people are doing, especially around holidays like July 4 when they're, at a fun party and think, oh, why wasn't I invited to that and stuff like that. I don't know why there's so much pressure to have a fun plan around the holidays, maybe because you see it on other people.
• 12:01
Speaker 4: I don't know. I think, Kimmy, your don't look phone, then you won't have pressure. I think that's self inflicted pressure. I think everybody would get a couple of couples together, a couple of girls or guys together, and you have a good time. You may throw something on the grill.
• 12:15
It's still the best weekend to have hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. That was my favorite fourth of July's and watermelon coleslaw and potato salad. And you got a perfect, a perfect weekend. Now we sort of get a little fancy and we have lobster rolls, which I love also. And that's very, I was telling you, I was watching a very, Ina Garten was making lobster rolls for the fourth and it's very easy.
• 12:38
You just saute some lobsters in a little butter and you put a little parsley and dill and you put it in bun and it's delicious. And there's nothing better than that kind of dinner with a big glass. I actually like sangria. Super American. Very, very.
• 12:53
Or a glass of Coca Cola, perfect.
• 12:56
Speaker 3: Is that how you typically have spent July 4?
• 12:59
Speaker 4: Yeah, usually at a Like my age? When I was your age with a baby, yes, we would barbecue out in the backyard and we would have the best time. Yes. And everybody else had children. So, three or four couples would get together, bring their little ones and everybody was playing outside.
• 13:19
Speaker 3: Was there fireworks, do you remember?
• 13:22
Speaker 4: We belonged to a country club in Westchester in those days and they had wonderful fireworks and you brought all the kids and we sat on the grass and we watched it and they did a great job. I don't know if they do it anymore.
• 13:35
Speaker 3: Do you think fireworks are overrated?
• 13:37
Speaker 4: No, I like them.
• 13:38
Speaker 3: I like them too.
• 13:39
Speaker 4: But I sort of watch them on telly. I watch it on the television. Really still beautiful.
• 13:45
Speaker 3: I do. I feel like it's hard to find places to watch them for some reason.
• 13:48
Speaker 4: Well, the ones in New York are fabulous. They're
• 13:52
  Speaker 3: Over here.
• 13:53
Speaker 4: And we did Well, it's on TV. Have it on at the Macy's. I'm in person. The Macy's sponsors it. It's always wonderful.
• 14:00
It's terrific. Kudos to Macy's, we love Macy's.
• 14:03
Speaker 3: Would you ever go away for July 4?
• 14:06
  Speaker 4: We have.
• 14:07
Speaker 3: You don't feel like you have to stay in The US?
• 14:09
Speaker 4: No, I don't think that's a mandatory rule, it's written down. I do actually, one July 4, Poppy and I and another couple were in Normandy and we went to the beaches and it was just very moving because you see all the soldiers that were killed and they played taps and we were crying. So I think it's a very moving holiday. We have to remember our heroes and all the service people who have done such wonderful jobs over the centuries to protect us.
• 14:42
Speaker 3: Let's move on to the Ask Grandma Anything. What's your favorite hot dog brand?
• 14:51
Speaker 4: You know what? I don't know. I haven't The ones I get are usually from the market, from the butchers, so I don't know if it's a brand. I used to like Isaac Gellis' little mini hot dogs and they still make them in the pastry puff and you put them in the little appetizer and they're still delicious. But I don't really used to be Nathan's, the foot long ones, but you know what, now I've been using a Butcher recently and they have the hot dogs there and the sausages.
• 15:23
I think it's a little fresher. I don't think there's any thing healthy in a hot dog, but as healthy as you can be.
• 15:29
Speaker 3: Someone wrote, My first love and boyfriend of two plus years broke up with me. A 28 year old female. Will I fall in love again?
• 15:37
Speaker 4: You'll definitely fall in love. You know what, it's sad, it takes you time to get over it, it's a grieving moment, but believe me, you're 28 years old with a whole world in front of you And for some reason, when it's not meant to be, you're better off broken up at 28 than at 38 or 48 or 58. So, you know, I know it's hard, but get out there, go out with friends and look forward. Don't look back.
• 16:06
Speaker 3: Yeah. I feel like I don't know why I'm blessed with this, like, thought process of I always am really hopeful. Like, I trust divine timing. I'm like, oh, if that didn't work out, like nothing was a waste of time. Nothing was not meant.
• 16:23
Like, you always learn lessons. Like Right. Or you have to trust that your life timing is the way it is for reason. And I feel like there's no one who in the end is like, it all didn't work out. Like, something had to have
• 16:37
Speaker 4: Something will work out, especially for 28 year olds.
• 16:41
Speaker 3: Yeah. Best dessert to take to a party, preferably not too messy.
• 16:45
Speaker 4: Oh, not too messy. Well, for fourth of July, definitely take either an apple pie or a blueberry pie or a peach pie. I wouldn't take stuff with icing too much because especially if it's going to be on an outdoor table, sometimes that could spoil. But a blueberry pie or an apple pie or peach pie, whatever is a local fruit of the area take, but apple pie is really fourth of July.
• 17:12
  Speaker 3: Or like cookies.
• 17:14
Speaker 4: Cookies are good too.
• 17:15
Speaker 3: I feel like I always And especially in the city, there's so many cookie places.
• 17:18
Speaker 4: I think anything that's homemade or made with love is perfect for this holiday.
• 17:25
Speaker 3: Or not. I feel like not everyone has time or No, but
• 17:30
Speaker 4: you can always go to No, if you can't do it yourself, there's always a market, always has a fresh area for pies. And if you live in suburban area, there are all kinds of local farms where you get fruit and they all make pies, They all make different pastries and you don't have to be ashamed that you can't make it yourself. Trust me, Grandma doesn't know how to make anything. I buy the pies wherever they are on the farm stand.
• 17:54
Speaker 3: Okay. Someone wrote traveling on the fourth for my honeymoon. Okay.
• 17:58
Speaker 4: Cute and patriotic plane outfit. Well, you could always put a blue pants with maybe a blue jacket and white shirt and put a red scarf around you, you're perfect. Because you do need something on the planes if you're traveling for the air conditioning. So throw a red scarf on and you'll be very red, white, and blue.
• 18:20
Speaker 3: Or like, I'm envisioning red baseball cap.
• 18:26
Speaker 4: Okay. And maybe like white sweatsuit. Except white gets so dirty on a plane, but alright.
• 18:34
Speaker 3: Okay. Maybe blue sweatsuit instead.
• 18:36
Speaker 4: I think blue. Alright. That's cute too. Let's move on to the drama club.
• 18:46
Speaker 3: So this past week, my entire feed was engagements of especially two big influencers. Uh-oh. We wore what? An acquired style. Two huge New York City fashion influencers, and they both had beautiful engagements, like, a terrace and with flowers, and they both had pear shaped diamonds.
• 19:15
  Speaker 4: Oh, that's what I had.
• 19:17
Speaker 3: Oh, so I was gonna say, what are your thoughts on pear shapes?
• 19:21
Speaker 4: Well, it it was in the sixties, it was the most popular, you know, ring. Of course, I always think the most classic ring is the round. If I had to do it now because I have a shape that is very out of favor, but it's coming back too. I think I would do an Asher cutter or a square or an emerald. I like that.
• 19:42
My mother had that and it's very pretty. But I think a diamond is beautiful no matter what shape and it
• 19:48
Speaker 3: just And even what for looks big, beautiful diamond.
• 19:50
Speaker 4: If they're big, they're always beautiful. And I saw a big pear shape on Instagram with the diamonds around the band, which I don't normally love, but it looks very it looked very pretty. It's very nice.
• 20:02
Speaker 3: Talked all about engagement rings on our podcast episode with Stephanie Gottlieb. So definitely go listen to that if you
• 20:08
Speaker 4: Oh, right. Missed it. Well, she does things with the stones even after you're engaged. You know, a stone, if you've had it like for I've had it for a long time and restyle it. She's wonderful at that as well.
• 20:21
Speaker 3: Feel like during the
• 20:22
Speaker 4: Well, summer, true. A lot of people thinking get about it. It's June. Well, June is your biggest month for weddings and engagement.
• 20:28
Speaker 3: No, but it's not weddings, it's engagement.
• 20:29
Speaker 4: Yeah, but I think it's the time of the year when people feel the winter is over, we're gonna start and let's get engaged and by the fall we'll get married. Course, you always say it takes a year, but I like the fall for marriage. So June is just a perfect month or July or August, anytime it's right.
• 20:47
Speaker 3: Yeah, I do wanna say since my entire feed this really for the last six months, I would say, is babies, weddings, and engagements. Well, it's your age. That's like so happy for everyone, but also for anyone looking at that and wondering, should I be doing that and comparing yourself? Well, can't compare yourself. Can't stress.
• 21:08
I don't on yourself because everyone is
• 21:11
Speaker 4: Everybody's on a different time and not everybody has the right person to do it. So you're just not doing it for the sake of doing it. Right. You have to really feel this is the moment that is correct for you.
• 21:22
Speaker 3: Yeah. It's just funny because I feel like on one end, I have some of my friends who are still gonna be single partying July 4. Right. And then some who are pregnant or
• 21:32
Speaker 4: Or have a little baby.
• 21:33
Speaker 3: Are engaged or everyone right now, I feel like at 29 Right. Is in a totally like, there's so many different sides of the spectrum
• 21:42
  Speaker 4: I agree.
• 21:42
Speaker 3: That they can be on. So it's an interesting
• 21:46
Speaker 4: time. It's different stage. It's what used to be called a passage. It's a passage moment. So, you know, this is the time you start deciding your future with somebody in most cases.
• 21:59
And this is what's happening at that age. Then at a different age, your children are growing up. You have
• 22:04
  Speaker 3: to think But
• 22:05
  Speaker 4: what about
• 22:05
Speaker 3: I'm saying is at this age, it isn't everyone is in the same boat. No. I feel like No. And in your early twenties
• 22:13
  Speaker 4: Well, nobody is.
• 22:14
Speaker 3: Everything up until your early twenties, everyone's kind of in the same boat.
• 22:17
Speaker 4: Right. That's correct. You know? Like, even if you're in
• 22:19
Speaker 3: a relationship, single, and then, like, in college, everyone's, like, doing the same stuff, And then like people are working on their job stuff. And then only now is it like, I have a friend who will probably be taking their kids to get face painted July 4, but then I also have a friend who wants their kid wants their face face. You know what I mean?
• 22:36
Speaker 4: So that's that's what it is. Not everybody is at the same time.
• 22:40
Speaker 3: Yeah. K. Let's do the grandma report. Our article this week is about traveling with a situationship. So someone you don't have a label with yet, you just started dating, like should you be traveling with someone and like having a fun little summer moment.
• 23:01
And this article was Elite Daily. And basically, it's saying more Gen Z women are taking trips with their ambiguous dating partners. And like they don't have expectations beyond just seeing where it goes. So obviously traveling together, you're dealing with like logistics and travel delays, and you're with someone
• 23:22
Speaker 4: not You're with you're in a room together all twenty four seven. Right. And this is not a really relationship yet. That's really a relationship. So it can be tricky.
• 23:33
You have to see how, you you have to be a little bit forgiving and sort of go with the flow. If that's not your personality, I wouldn't suggest this kind of trip.
• 23:44
Speaker 3: I think you have to accept that it'll either clarify that you wanna Make it or break it. Or you're gonna realize it doesn't work out. Right. So as long as you're like open and to putting yourself in that situation could potentially rush it before it was ready to be. But I do think whether you go on a trip or whether you don't, the outcome of the relationship is probably gonna be the same.
• 24:08
  You're
• 24:08
Speaker 4: either Not gonna necessarily. Yeah. Well, it's either gonna quicken the relationship to go to the next level or it's gonna be goodbye and good luck after the trip. But
• 24:15
Speaker 3: you would've found that out anyway
• 24:17
Speaker 4: Yeah, but you didn't have to pay for it. Yeah, fair.
• 24:20
Speaker 3: And you could've gone on a trip with a friend. Exactly. I think if you just wanna travel
• 24:23
Speaker 4: It be a little stressful. It could be a little stressful, I think.
• 24:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, more stressful even than going with a friend or I
• 24:29
Speaker 4: going by think so.
• 24:30
  Speaker 3: I think so.
• 24:31
Speaker 4: Well, not by yourself. I think if it was a choice of going by myself, I would go see, I'm still of vintage. I would hook onto a trip of some sort if I was a single person. There's so many of them. There are young trips that people go on and there are older trips All over the world, you sign up, you go on these talk I would
• 24:50
Speaker 3: sign up with a random company.
• 24:51
Speaker 4: Oh, see, would. Because you have your own Oh, know, I know. Abercrombie and Kent, there are millions of different, very wonderful travel programs. And you could really if you really wanna take a really exciting trip, you can do that too. If you don't have a commitment with somebody.
• 25:08
You shouldn't stay home if you wanna travel.
• 25:10
Speaker 3: Like, if you wanna travel, like I feel I've done this in past relationships. We were talking about this earlier where I wasn't dating yet, but like if it was between having memories with someone I kinda liked at the time. Right. And in getting a trip to, to Napa out of it versus not going at all. Like what is
• 25:28
Speaker 4: it? It doesn't hurt anybody. It's just a matter of whether you want to do it or not. It's a very personal choice. But I also think that for the person who doesn't have a companion and doesn't isn't even thinking about a relationship, there are alternatives out there.
• 25:41
And you can certainly look into them if you wanna travel.
• 25:45
Speaker 3: Okay. Let's do the rewind. We're going to talk about what we've been watching. I went to theaters to see The Materialists. Right.
• 25:56
  That movie with Dakota Johnson.
• 25:58
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 25:58
Speaker 4: It's Did you like it?
• 26:01
Speaker 3: I liked it. I definitely liked it. I feel like people are kinda analyzing it online, so I'm thinking twice about some of it. I did feel like the same where I went with Zach, and when we left, I was like, a lot of things were left a little open ended. It was a 24, so it was a little artsy.
• 26:20
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 26:20
Speaker 3: And I feel like usually with a rom com, like, I think a lot of people, including myself, went in thinking it's gonna be tie in a bow. It's gonna be happening. Right. So I feel like even though you can kinda tell from the marketing of it that it's a little like, I don't wanna say darker, but like deeper. Right.
• 26:39
It definitely didn't really feel like a rom com as much as just like a drama with
• 26:44
Speaker 4: Well, maybe they wanted to bridge different groups.
• 26:47
Speaker 3: I think it was more modernizing Right. The rom com. But I don't know if I like it. Like, in
• 26:53
Speaker 4: the sense that You're a traditional rom comer.
• 26:56
Speaker 3: Yeah. I think it was like very it was they were talking about a lot of the things that we talk about, you know, in dating today. So it felt a a little cliche, but still that is what we talk about, like, you know, checking the boxes Right. And all that stuff. So that felt right.
• 27:11
But then there were moments where you were just like, is it really
• 27:18
  Speaker 4: Worth talking about.
• 27:20
Speaker 3: Or just like, is it was it realistic enough at other I don't wanna give things away.
• 27:25
  Speaker 4: Okay. So don't.
• 27:26
Speaker 3: But I would definitely go see it. I was excited that people went to the theaters.
• 27:30
Speaker 4: I haven't been to a movie theater in so long. I've been to Broad I've been to Broadway. Yeah. Well, most of the movies, because I wanted to go actually last weekend, Poppy and I had nothing to do on a Sunday night and I wanted to go to We have a charming theater in Sack Harbor and I wanted to go, but the movies, one was Ants, which I think is an animated movie, which I had no desire to see. And the other one was a sci fi and I don't really like that.
• 27:55
I was looking forward to maybe a foreign film or something and they didn't have it. So, I still haven't gotten to the theater. The last movie I saw was Oppenheimer. This is very scary. That's actually crazy.
• 28:06
  That's like three years ago.
• 28:07
Speaker 3: I like to go I used pretty to love it. Because also sometimes you get that, besides getting the popcorn and the candy, which
• 28:15
Speaker 4: is Right, why I the licorice, I have to go.
• 28:17
Speaker 3: But you have that shared theater experience. So, for example, in The Materialist, one of the dates she went on or I'm sorry, she's a matchmaker. One of the people she was, like, interviewing, he goes, I'm in private equity. And one of the girls in the audience goes, ugh. Which was funny because you could tell, oh, she had this experience.
• 28:35
I'm sure a lot of people have had dating in New York. So that's kind of funny and it adds to that, like, group watching experience.
• 28:42
Speaker 4: You've been watching Somebody Feed Somebody Feed Phil. Why watching Netflix? Because first of all, been so hot. So I've been watching Netflix for the last three days and three nights. He was in the Basque Country.
• 28:55
This is a new season. This is his
• 28:57
Speaker 3: Well, third episode is a different place.
• 28:59
Speaker 4: But this is his third season. This is a brand new season now that just came out, I think, last week. And think I'll tell you that you-
• 29:05
Speaker 3: more than three seasons.
• 29:07
Speaker 4: Whatever it is, this is the newest one that just dropped. The first one was in Amsterdam, which was sort of all right. I had been to some of the places he had gone to, but the one in the Basque Country, first of it's so beautiful and the food looks so delicious. I said, I'd like to go there right now. I watched
• 29:24
Speaker 3: it and my friend Isabelle was there last week.
• 29:26
Speaker 4: Oh my gosh. Did you see love the episode when he went to the chicken farm and they made him pick up.
• 29:32
Speaker 3: Wait, I haven't watched the whole season yet. I watched that
• 29:34
Speaker 4: episode. There's some funny things.
• 29:36
Speaker 3: Season eight of Somebody Feed Phil.
• 29:38
Speaker 4: Season eight. Season eight? Yeah. All right. Whatever it is,
• 29:40
Speaker 3: it's I I've watched more than the three seasons and I've watched all
• 29:43
Speaker 4: of them. Well, this was wonderful. Loved it. What I liked so much was Richard, the brother, he has all his relatives now on the show, which is fun. But Richard, the brother had the final meal with him at this very, very, one of the most fabulous restaurants in the world, in this area, the, you know, in, in the Basque region.
• 30:02
And it looks so delicious. The brother was eating. He didn't even comb his hair. He was a mess. And he said he was a mess on things.
• 30:09
So it's a lot of fun. Anyway, that's what I watched last night.
• 30:12
Speaker 3: I love a family travel docuseries.
• 30:18
  Speaker 4: He's done a great job. He's got
• 30:20
Speaker 5: his daughter in it. His son is doing some of the
• 30:22
Speaker 4: work now and his wife, of course, makes appearances. But I used to love when his mom and dad wanted. Now he of does a tribute to, it's not as good. It's really so interesting. They're not as funny.
• 30:34
The father used to be to break.
• 30:36
Speaker 3: I'll tell you why. The parents were not trying to be funny.
• 30:39
Speaker 4: Right. They were just fabulous.
• 30:41
Speaker 3: And then the comedians that they bring on, you're expecting, oh, I have to laugh. They're not funny. And yeah. It's like, okay. Kinda clever, but,
• 30:50
Speaker 4: like, not. But, anyway, everybody should watch the program because it's wonderful.
• 30:53
Speaker 3: Yes. Okay. Let's do GrandmaGale's voicemail.

Speaker 3: Someone left a voice mail message. Question for us to answer. Here it is.
• 32:03
  Speaker 4: Let's see here.
• 32:06
Speaker 7: How do you deal with needy family members and needy friends? For instance, they always need to borrow money, which is no problem because they do pay back. There's always some urgency. They need a life to have them. They're just crazy with it.
• 32:21
As well as friends that once you go out with them all the time, you're like, hey, I'm trying to budget here. And you have a large list of friends. How do you accommodate or deal with somebody who's constantly needing something?
• 32:37
Speaker 3: So the question is how do you deal with needy friends whether Or relatives. Or relatives, whether they're asking you for money or other types of friends who wanna go out all the time and aren't thinking about the fact that, you know, some people have financial budgets too.
• 32:53
Speaker 4: Or that you have a life. Yeah. Well, if your family member is constantly asking you for money, if you have it, fine, give it, but don't expect it to be returned. And at some point, I think you have to say no, depending on if it's a teenager and and they wanna go to a movie or something like that and not using it for something bad, say, alright, I'll I'll do it once a, you know, once a while in a while. But I wouldn't make a steady routine out of it.
• 33:21
Speaker 3: Would put a lot more money than going to a movie.
• 33:24
Speaker 4: Well, depending on the age, if they need it for something that's very important and you can spare it, don't expect it to be returned. I really just always figure loaning to a friend or a family member is a loan, basically that'll never get repaid. And the other was about the neediness, as far as I'm concerned, there are lots of people who are very needy, but you know what? You have to at some point say, Listen, don't say it to them, but to yourself, I have a life. I have to figure it out.
• 33:54
I don't mind, you know, once a week or whatever, having dinner or having lunch or catching a drink with someone. But if it can't be on a daily,
• 34:03
Speaker 5: if some people would do
• 34:04
Speaker 3: it though, like how do
• 34:05
Speaker 4: I have other plans and I'm sorry. I'll see you next week. You almost have to cut it off in the beginning. If you see that's the personality of the person, you're going to have to either sit down and talk to them and say, Listen, there are so many other things I have to do. I love being with you, but we have to be careful.
• 34:23
It's becoming all encompassing, and I can't do this at this point in my
• 34:28
Speaker 3: right answer, to be honest, but I get, like, not wanting to hurt people's
• 34:31
Speaker 4: Oh, You shouldn't say it the Or, hurtful
• 34:34
Speaker 3: like, sometimes they kinda make you feel guilty for like not hanging out with them. Oh, well Like I felt that in previous So it is a tough one, but I think like you have to, yeah, be honest with yourself and be like, I'm not gonna allow this person to guilt me. Like, I wanna have a life other than this person. And like, keep things in perspective. Like, you know what's normal and what's Like, if someone wants to hang out more than once a week, that's like a lot.
• 35:02
  Speaker 4: It is a
• 35:02
Speaker 3: lot. So, you know, I think, yeah, just say to them Especially if you want the things. If
• 35:09
Speaker 4: you have nothing doing and you wanna hang out with them, that's fine. But if you have other commitments, you have to say, listen, I love being with you, but I have other commitments and I really can't do it. Maybe we'll see each other next week.
• 35:21
Speaker 3: Yeah. Okay. Let's end with a game of should we bring it back? Okay. Should we bring these things back or leave them the past?
• 35:35
  Watermelon seed spinning contests.
• 35:38
Speaker 4: I think we could leave that in the past. First of most watermelons don't have seeds anymore. They figured out how to do it. Yeah.
• 35:44
Speaker 3: Just realized I've been eating watermelon. Where have the seeds been?
• 35:46
  Speaker 4: They've they've they've they've made watermelons without
• 35:50
Speaker 3: seeds. No black seeds.
• 35:53
Speaker 4: You can eat the you can eat the
• 35:54
Speaker 3: whole You eat the other one.
• 35:55
Speaker 4: You can eat the white. They're tiny. So don't but the if you do have a watermelon with black seeds, do not spit them anymore. It's sort of gross.
• 36:03
Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh, these are all July 4 theme, by the way. Right. But also with the watermelon situation, remember when you would like eat a black sea where they would say, oh, a watermelon's gonna grow in your belly.
• 36:12
Speaker 4: Right. Well, that used to be.
• 36:14
Speaker 3: What happened to that? Bring it back.
• 36:16
Speaker 4: Bring it back. I don't think anybody is telling that to their kids anymore.
• 36:21
Speaker 3: So sad. Nathan's hot dog eating contest,
• 36:24
Speaker 4: that's Well, that's of back. He's back. I just saw her. He's doing it again, whatever his name is, the famous one. Know what?
• 36:31
It's fine. Joey Wright. Something. There was a woman who did it last year.
• 36:35
  Speaker 3: So gross.
• 36:36
Speaker 4: Whatever. They wanna do it, it's fun, doesn't hurt anybody. Bring it back. It never
• 36:42
  Speaker 3: left, I'm not
• 36:43
Speaker 4: into it. I like to hear the results.
• 36:46
Speaker 3: I think they're crazy. Town parades with homemade floats?
• 36:52
Speaker 4: Well, I haven't seen that in years. I don't think we need to bring that back. First of all, that happened mostly in very small towns, the If fourth of your town looks forward to doing it and you have the means to do it in in your village or your your town, do it. It's can't hurt anybody. You know, you're not getting that kind of float floating down the middle of Chicago or California or New York.
• 37:18
But if a small town does it and they do it with their policemen, firemen, I think it's very nice.
• 37:22
Speaker 3: What about sack races and three legged races?
• 37:26
Speaker 4: No, I think that's fun for the kids. Don't think that ever left.
• 37:29
Speaker 3: Maybe not. Maybe I just haven't seen it.
• 37:31
Speaker 4: Yeah. I think we've grown up. I think they do it at camp and they do it in schools. What about wearing matching family t shirts with American flags on it? That depends on the family.
• 37:42
If they if it's a family tradition, go with the family tradition. I never sort of liked that. But I don't think you should cancel it. If you're all looking forward to it and you don't and the other family members don't object, put them on. Have a good time.
• 37:57
  Have a laugh.
• 37:58
Speaker 3: Red, white and blue jello molds.
• 38:01
Speaker 4: My mother used to make that with the marshmallows, but I can't bring my mom back. I don't think they're coming back. I really don't think they're coming back. I think what comes back now are those rainbow cakes. That might be a substitute, a red, white, and blue cake.
• 38:18
Maybe. I haven't seen a Jell O mold in a long time. I know they still make Jell O.
• 38:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, Jell O exists, but not the molds.
• 38:28
Speaker 4: Not the molds. Your grandfather used to love it.
• 38:31
Speaker 3: I mean, if they're cute, you try to bring them back.
• 38:34
Speaker 4: Not so easy to make them, by the way. They were a little tricky. Mine all went into it. I tried. My mother made it perfectly.
• 38:40
I think you have to refrigerate it, then add the second level, then you keep going. It's not as easy as you think. Oh, So for okay,
• 38:48
Speaker 6: us it very could
• 38:49
Speaker 4: be a disaster. We're it. Even for us, we're gonna leave it in the past.
• 38:52
Speaker 3: Yeah. Okay, another great episode of Excuse My Grandma, by the way. Just another reminder, please follow the show if you're listening on Apple or Spotify.
