- Jaba: Hello everybody, welcome back to the Scout and the Speculator Podcast. This is one of your two co-hosts, Will Jarvis, also known as Jabba Cards on Instagram, whatnot, eBay, and so forth. I will kick it over to Jeremy to introduce our new segment that we are very, very excited about. underscore_underscore_: Portfolio Pals. It's ⁓ We we kept it kiddish in nature and we've kind of alluded to it in prior episodes. I've put some stuff out on the Instagram page as well. The couple ⁓ baby Jabba and a little redheaded boy sitting with a prospect in between ⁓ basically we like, hey, we both like this card instead of fighting each other for it. Let's just go in on halves of it. Kind of makes your money go a little further. ⁓ get it in. See what you want to do with it. If you can snipe some deals, do some snipes. That might be another another ⁓ subtopic we talk about or share is some of just some snipes that have happened week to week for us. ⁓ as of now, I think we have ⁓ six cards that we've split together so far. I don't know if we want to go into the prices of which we paid, but we're we're trying to get into cards pretty cheap of good names that we might otherwise not buy on our own. Jaba: Definitely. underscore_underscore_: It also we felt gave us some credibility of hey, we're telling you guys we like this player and we're gonna go buy some of this player as well. so obviously first card. We'll start with probably our best card yet is Luis Hernandez True Blue. ⁓ that one we got cheap early. And now I mean there were no directs, and now the directs are a thousand plus. So Luis Jaba: Right. Very good deal. Let's let's tell the listeners maybe where we got each card, just so you know kind of the various ways that we buy and underscore_underscore_: Yeah. ⁓ I mean this is the only ⁓ no there's yeah, okay. ⁓ so this one came from a local card shop for me. the guy had pulled it. And realistically, his market's still really up. Luis Fernandez, even a week and a half, twenty days out from product release. ⁓ base in refractor autos are redemption only. And ⁓ yeah, I mean I I don't really know what else to dive into for it. I'll just keep going down the list of what we got. ⁓ Santa goes go ahead. Jaba: Yeah, I mean he he's obviously one of the one of the top names. His base came out at a ridiculous price. I know it was like three hundred. underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Like held three hundred for a while. Jaba: You know, the transaction volume was low, has you had said, you know, kinda the impact of having a redemption base auto kinda slows down deal flow. But yeah, I mean Luis Hernandez is a guy I think from the jump we were saying, you know, yeah, it's not great that he struggled in single A. Like you would obviously prefer him to play well than not. ⁓ but at the same time it's stupid to, you know, really put much weight underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Jaba: into those results for a seventeen year old. And you know, I think we got a number on it that we're really happy with. And and again, if if anybody's interested in buying any of these cards or discussing with us, we're two reasonable guys. And ⁓ yeah, our ⁓ our direct lines are open. I think if you're listening you know where to find us. But yeah, what what's up next, Jeremy? underscore_underscore_: Correct. Yeah. And Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ up next is actually our first one. This so this one this one actually just came in the mail for you as we were talking. ⁓ Santiago Solarte True Gold. This is kind of what kicked this all off for us, realistically and honestly. I shot a c the card over to Jabba. We bought it on ⁓ September September 10th on eBay. I shot it to Jabba and I'm like, hey, this looks like a good deal, huh? And he goes, I just bought it. I'm like ⁓ he's like, I'm not trying to pull this one over on you, but this is not a card we could wait on and see like where it settles or try to make an offer on, 'cause I think OBO was available. He's like, we just gotta buy it and we'll figure it out later. Sure enough, the next one did f five sixty and then another one was OBO'd at five hundred. Full transparency, we binned ours at two hundred. So that'll be a nice double up. Now we can confidently put this out there now that it has arrived. Jaba: Yeah, we had recorded talking about it and then we were like, We gotta wait for this guy to ship it. I was like, Yeah, I'm sure he's he's totally a listener, but ⁓ I I agreed with Yeah, and I hate being like that guy on eBay, you know, ⁓ when is this gonna ship? You know, usually I just kinda wait and see and if something hasn't arrived I'll dig into it. But yeah, that was one where we were ⁓ underscore_underscore_: Yeah, because we bought it on a Thursday and it didn't ship until Monday. Baited breath until it actually said shipped and now that it's arrived we're good. Jaba: I I yeah, we we both thought that that one was ⁓ not showing up. So that was a ⁓ pleasant surprise. Yeah, good good price on another guy we like, yeah. underscore_underscore_: Getting cancelled. ⁓ yep. I think the next couple are gonna be eBay rattles off. ⁓ Brandon Clark, True Blue, you snapped that one up on eBay. Texted me the next morning like, Hey, I know you were looking for one, got this one. Price was good, we kinda said yup. ⁓ we're actually gonna talk about him, I believe, in our next ⁓ AFL breakdown with the Peoria Javalinas. Javalinas. So we can Jaba: Go javelinas, yeah, we're gonna roll right into recording that, so good ⁓ good talent. underscore_underscore_: We can just leave we'll just leave that one there and we can talk about him more in detail in the next episode. Samil Serrano True Blue popped up on eBay at two fifty. ⁓ kind of feels high for a two fifty of somebody like Serrano, but Serrano's a lot of people's chases. And his blues weren't really popping, like at all. ⁓ his true color was doing is doing, was doing, might still be doing pretty good numbers. So when we saw that one it felt obviously you you have to look at the condition of it all. Jaba: Yeah. underscore_underscore_: feel as though where you're at. ⁓ we thought everything on it checked out. His base autos are kind of settling sub twenty bucks right now as I look. ⁓ an international did forty six. Like, did we pay strong on it? Yeah, probably. But it was the first one that was like even relatively acquirable. I think the rest of ⁓ were like four hundred plus. So Jaba: Yeah, and that that's a guy where even if his price, you know, comes down a bit here on us, you know, I'm fine even if it goes from being a great price to an okay price. Just a guy that I really like, I think we both really like. And you know, especially if we're able to ⁓ send it in for grading, you know, that's kind of a really nice one to have ⁓ early. underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Jaba: And then just send it off, forget about it, and you know, we'll talk to you guys in six months about it. Two years, yeah. underscore_underscore_: Without a doubt. Trying to see yeah, so we bought ours for two forty nine. The next one that sold was three fifteen, three hundred, three ninety f ⁓ three hundred, two ninety five. Another one just did two twenty five with kind of a bad photo. So ⁓ yeah, so we're still we're not dead on that card yet. Anthony Martinez, somebody that you and I weren't buying and then found ourselves after a singular episode saying, I guess we're gonna buy some of him. Jaba: Nope. underscore_underscore_: Talked ourselves right into it. And we went and bought a true black. ⁓ someone on Facebook Instagram had it. No, whatnot had it. Reached out to him through Instagram, through text, got the deal done. And ⁓ true black, we paid strong on it, three fifty for it. But it's one of those colors and something we've talked about that once these ⁓ true colors kind of dry up after release, you don't really find them. So we thought, you know what? Jaba: Tone A. Yeah, exactly. underscore_underscore_: We'll get one really good one of him. The opportunity's here. We can get it offline. Don't have to worry about this, that, the other. So we did. And ⁓ rounding out is the one we actually got last night on the twenty first bookend. ⁓ for sub two hundred bucks. A Talon Haley black X Fractor Auto. ⁓ you want to talk about kind of what we're seeing with the Haley market before we log it off and jump into something else? Jaba: Yeah. Yeah, for sure. I think you know, Haley was a guy that we really liked, ⁓ kind of at release. I wouldn't say we talked ourselves into him. I think you were pretty high on ⁓ from the jump, at least relative to the pitcher class. You know, there's your two guys at the top in Sinche and ⁓ Zizweta. And then there's kind of a glob. underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Yeah. Jaba: And he and Hidalgo really kind of separated themselves from that glob. And I think ⁓ you know, for Haley it's nice, right? Because they pushed him to single A as a prep. They've actually been developing pitching well, which sounds crazy to say for the Angels after, you know, a decade plus of, you know, just terrible handling of these kids. But yeah, I think with Haley it's just underscore_underscore_: Right. Disaster. Jaba: He's already down. He's below a ten dollar sotto now. underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Yep. Jaba: I mean, that's just one where it's not gonna take much to turn into twenty, twenty-five, thirty, and then, you know, all of our multiples go from there. And yeah, I mean I think he's just a guy we really like. Obviously, you know, the story of him in high school both blowing his arm out and having cancer, you know, on on the one hand, obviously it's inspiring, but more for this purpose, you know, there's more developmental runway. You know, if he's doing this all based underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Jaba: Basically barely pitching in high school. ⁓ you know, we both feel like there's a lot of room for growth. So I think Haley's a guy where we really like him. We tried to get a true red last week, we didn't get it, ⁓ and we were kind of kicking ourselves. Sorry. underscore_underscore_: Yeah. We were the underbitter though. We were the underbitter though, so we tried. Jaba: Yeah, so we got a silver medal. but yeah, after that that kind of I think when that can happen you can be like, ⁓ well, you I didn't really want the guy anyway, but then this was one where we were like, Okay, like the next big one that shows up, like we're we're gonna buy that. We're not gonna be stupid, but you know, we're getting something of his, you know, soon. underscore_underscore_: Yep. Yeah. And another reason for doing that, if you guys are have even made it this far, ⁓ we haven't seen any blue autos at all. No gold autos, no true golds. There's been some gold shimmers. ⁓ no true color like at all. No 499 autos. Like a lot of the subsector of his autos seem to be quote unquote missing. It might not be missing. He just might not have signed them. But for us, not seeing them yet. Like you could say all people are still getting shipments in this, that, the other. Like we should have seen something by now. Andre Hidalgo Andre Hidalgo haven't seen a refractor auto of him yet. Like there's certain guys where we haven't seen autos of. If you guys have maybe you know what, maybe we'll make a a ⁓ missing milk carton poster thing and put that on our on our Instagram drum up. Jaba: It's straight. I think Dave would get a good laugh at that our quant. ⁓ underscore_underscore_: Yeah. There's just ⁓ certain colors missing, so that was another thing. That's why we went in heavy on the Talon Haley. We had noticed it from the jump that a lot of his stuff was quote unquote missing. So we were like, alright, if we can get this red, we have one of the best true colors and one of the only true colors we had seen. Didn't get it. True. And a name match. And a name match. It does have his name on it. Jaba: And it's a color match. Not to make it worse, that we didn't get it. underscore_underscore_: ⁓ so we went from there to ⁓ you're looking so confused. ⁓ we just went to kind of the next card up. There is a black ⁓ gold ink auto that ends tonight as well, so we shall see. But yeah. Jaba: Should we wait to pose this until tomorrow? underscore_underscore_: I don't know. Up to you. Well now it's in there, so Jaba: ⁓ yeah, I don't know. I don't think anyone's gonna If you're listening to this and you go get it, good on ya. ⁓ it means that we're influential. underscore_underscore_: Exactly. Hashtag influencers. But yeah, that's really Jaba: So hopefully this keeps people from buying it, hearing us talk it up. You're like, Okay, stay away. But yeah. ⁓ you know, fun little series we're doing. We've been having a lot of fun, you know, trying to buy stuff. Like Jeremy said, it just makes a lot of stuff more accessible. And ⁓ you know, it's just a fun project to have with a buddy. Yeah, a and it lowers your risk, yeah. ⁓ 'cause if it goes to zero you're only losing fifty percent, not a hundred percent of it. underscore_underscore_: Right. I think we're good. It lowers our risk. That's the other thing. It lowers our risk. That's right, baby. Jaba: ⁓ that's what we call risk mitigation. ⁓ but yeah, no, we'll ⁓ I don't know how frequently we'll do this, maybe once a week, maybe it'll just be a quick little episode segment.
