- 0:00Hey Lauren. Hey Cara.
- 0:01Do you remember the first time that you sat down and had to get
- 0:05employee feedback like employer feed from your boss?
- 0:08Yes, I do very distinctly. And the reason I say that is
- 0:11because I remember being like, Oh my gosh, I need to do all
- 0:14these things tomorrow. Like I felt so felt like it was
- 0:19good feedback, but I was like, I have to work on it.
- 0:21Like what's the plan? How do I fix this?
- 0:23And it was kind of overwhelming. Welcome to unspoken career
- 0:27truths. I'm Cara Wood.
- 0:29And I'm Lauren Levac Gilbert. And we're here to be the Co
- 0:32workers you can trust. In just 10 minutes we'll cover
- 0:35the strategies you need, the mistakes to avoid, and the
- 0:37insider secrets no one tells you so you can show up with
- 0:41confidence at work. We are talking today about
- 0:45feedback and I really wanted to start, we're going to spend this
- 0:50whole week talking about feedback because there is
- 0:52getting feedback and there's giving feedback.
- 0:54But actually we really wanted to start with receiving it because
- 0:57early in your career, often there's really formal vehicles
- 1:00for you to get feedback, but there aren't always the formal
- 1:03vehicles for you to necessarily give it or there might be just
- 1:06kind of vague questions at the end of something.
- 1:08And so we're going to talk about how to give good feedback later
- 1:10when you are, you know, you have a little bit more power of
- 1:13people reporting to you. But for now, everyone's
- 1:15experienced this where you have to, you have to sit and get
- 1:19feedback. So that's the topic.
- 1:22And I feel like this is kind of a kitschy line and maybe we
- 1:26should do a wisdom under fire on this.
- 1:28But like people always say, feedback is a gift.
- 1:31And I do agree with that because I think it's important to hear
- 1:35from other people's perspective. But it also takes time to really
- 1:39understand that and be comfortable with that,
- 1:41especially if you're someone who like takes things critically or
- 1:45like really might potentially overthink things.
- 1:48So feedback is definitely a growth opportunity for most
- 1:50people. Yeah, but it's not how I started
- 1:54with feedback, right? It's not how I first felt about
- 1:56feedback. So I did want to ask like just
- 1:58sort of you like, how do you typically react to it?
- 2:00And how did that evolve over time?
- 2:02Like now it sounds like, you know it's a gift, but you just
- 2:05told the story of it being super overwhelming to get all these
- 2:08things to do. Yeah, I think when I was
- 2:11probably younger in my career, I had a ton of, I was a
- 2:16perfectionist and I think I had a bit of imposter syndrome too.
- 2:19So when receiving feedback, it always felt like this is
- 2:22something I need to go change immediately.
- 2:23Like, how do I fix it? How do I work on it?
- 2:25And I'm someone who likes like build out a plan and understand
- 2:28the steps to get there. So for me, it was just like kind
- 2:32of all hands on deck, let's figure this out.
- 2:34Like I need to go and fix this now.
- 2:36Like how can I check in on it? And the way I kind of think,
- 2:39think about it now is you first need to understand where the
- 2:43feedback is coming from because the feedback is coming from
- 2:47someone who has a specific angle or approach or they interact
- 2:51with you in some way. So first understand that because
- 2:54feedback is a gift, but it also doesn't mean that it's always
- 2:57correct. The second piece is like really
- 3:00sitting down and reflecting about it rather than being
- 3:02worried that you need to go fix something like right away,
- 3:05understand what is, what are they saying?
- 3:09What do I need to potentially change or do I not need to
- 3:11change anything? And then how do I go from here?
- 3:13So I think I'm a little bit more Zen about feedback.
- 3:16Now, and I'm so glad you brought that up because we're going to,
- 3:18we're going to talk through a framework that has those two
- 3:20time scales specifically in mind.
- 3:22What should you do in the room when you're getting the
- 3:24feedback? And then what should you do a
- 3:26couple days later when you've had time to digest the feedback?
- 3:29Cara, I love that you said that because it's also, it's the way
- 3:32I kind of think about it is also like receiving a compliment,
- 3:35like you need to understand how to receive the feedback because
- 3:38sometimes it can be, it can just kind of happen out of the blue
- 3:41and you'll just be like, like, I don't know what to say or I
- 3:43don't know what to do. So I'm yes, 100%. 100% And I was
- 3:47going to say for me as a writer, you're getting, if, if you're
- 3:50not getting feedback line by line feedback on your writing,
- 3:53like find another editor because that is actually the best
- 3:57editor. Those are the best editors to
- 3:58work under. And so I early days, actually
- 4:00before I was even paid to write, I had, you know, news college
- 4:03newspaper editors pull up a chair and I, they would
- 4:06literally just like totally tear apart my writing like line by
- 4:09line by line, which is hard, but it's actually amazing.
- 4:15And you learn so much and what you also learn.
- 4:19So how my, my time with feedback has really changed.
- 4:22I finally learned after years of this to stay quiet and actually
- 4:27listen and really be like an active listener when you're
- 4:31first getting feedback because there's time to defend yourself
- 4:35and there's there's time to gather evidence.
- 4:37But if you're not listening and you're planning your response,
- 4:40you're not listening. So that is like my number one
- 4:44way that I've changed is I've gotten much better at just
- 4:46stopping and realizing I'm getting feedback.
- 4:49Let me stop and then completely listen to the feedback.
- 4:52The other thing that that really made me think of is I think as I
- 4:56matured in my career, it was separating the feedback from me
- 4:59as a human being. Like I used to feel like a, like
- 5:03an attack in some way about like me or who I am.
- 5:05And that's, that's not what feedback is.
- 5:08The feedback is an opportunity to grow and to learn.
- 5:10But again, it's a perspective shift and it takes time to, to
- 5:14get to that. But I, I think sometimes feel
- 5:16it, people feel like it's a personal attack.
- 5:18And so it gets really intermingled emotionally into
- 5:21like who you are as a person. But that's not really the point
- 5:24of the feedback. Yeah, and I'm really glad you
- 5:26brought that up because I feel like we get different kinds of
- 5:28feedback. Like I have gotten, again, I got
- 5:32lots of feedback in my writing and sometimes I've gotten
- 5:34feedback in my writing from someone who's not a
- 5:35sophisticated editor and like they've literally highlighted a
- 5:38word I wrote and just wrote in yuck in the comments.
- 5:40And like, that's not fun. But but then you also actually
- 5:46sometimes do get feedback. I don't know if this has
- 5:48happened to you, Lauren, where I've gotten feedback on, it's
- 5:51not, again, it's not personality things, but it's behavior.
- 5:54It's behavior that's around my job.
- 5:56So like someone, a colleague of mine gave me feedback once that
- 6:00I was taking notes on my computer, which meant I was
- 6:02looking at my computer during meetings and that made her feel
- 6:06like she, we were further away from each other.
- 6:08And that was actually great feedback because she was super
- 6:11specific. But it was also like, Oh, yeah,
- 6:13that's just, I'm, that's how I take notes.
- 6:15Like do I have to stop and change the way I take notes?
- 6:18Like, no, realizing that if I open my computer, I was sending
- 6:22her a signal and we could have that open communication about,
- 6:24hey, I do want to record this or let me write down this thing.
- 6:28It really changed our just our dynamic.
- 6:30But at first, it felt personal. But I think that's why I also
- 6:34had mentioned, like, you need to understand where the feedback is
- 6:37coming from from the person, right?
- 6:39Because they might be, to your point, interpreting a signal
- 6:42differently than how you're interpreting it.
- 6:44So it's really important to understand who the feedback is
- 6:47coming from, where they sit and where their perspective is.
- 6:50And it gives you a way different view of the feedback in general.
- 6:53Yeah. And that's actually.
- 6:55So there's a little framework I kind of mentioned at the start,
- 6:57like what should you be doing in the moment?
- 7:00Listening. And I would say again, try 80%
- 7:03to just listen actively science. You're like, want to react or
- 7:08defend and then clarify. So exactly what you're saying,
- 7:12Lauren, like once you do, once they have given you the
- 7:14feedback, make sure that you understood it.
- 7:16Like repeat back and ask them the context.
- 7:19Because a lot of times someone's giving you contacts for a
- 7:21specific scenario. Like have they given you some
- 7:24specific evidence that they recently this is what happened.
- 7:27Can you walk me through, Can you give me an example?
- 7:29And then the last one, which is like a little bit
- 7:31unconventional, is actually like appreciate.
- 7:34So in the moment, if you can thank the person because they've
- 7:37taken the time and even if they're writing yuck, they've
- 7:40taken the time to to say this isn't working for me now,
- 7:46clarifying why it wasn't working for them and then being like,
- 7:49thank you for both your time and telling me it wasn't working.
- 7:52And then your time to tell me why is, you know, phenomenal.
- 7:56I love that. Appreciation is important and
- 7:59that's something to work towards, right?
- 8:01Like if you're on this journey, maybe you're first starting in
- 8:04your career, or maybe you're, you're mostly through your
- 8:06career. It, it has taken time to evolve
- 8:10into a level of comfort around feedback.
- 8:13But I also think it's important to listen to our other piece of
- 8:16this episode because not everybody is good at giving
- 8:18feedback. Yeah.
- 8:20And I would say like actually the earlier in your career, you
- 8:22can be like, yes, I do want feedback.
- 8:25The you're setting yourself up to get all the advice from the
- 8:29people who are going to give it. Yeah, take that advice from
- 8:33them, but. I think that the one thing I'll
- 8:35add to that, Cara, is also ask feedback about like what you're
- 8:39doing well, like what did they see as your strengths or where
- 8:42did they see opportunities for you to learn more or grow like
- 8:46that? That is also some of the most
- 8:49beautiful types of feedback. Like I've asked you before,
- 8:51Cara, like what do you think are my superpowers or like what are
- 8:54some of the things that you think different me differentiate
- 8:57me from other people? And it's great to hear your
- 8:59perspective because you see it from a in different eyes.
- 9:03Yeah, that's true. And I, I think because one of
- 9:06the things that you mentioned was like getting feedback and
- 9:07then not knowing what to do next.
- 9:09So like during that appreciation stage, you can also be like, how
- 9:11do we work together from here? You know when you especially
- 9:14when you get hard feedback for to like turn around and say to
- 9:16the person you still want to work with them is actually like
- 9:19helpful to both of you and then. Comfortably also say like I need
- 9:24AI need I need some time to digest this, can we revisit this
- 9:28tomorrow or something? Like be comfortable giving
- 9:30yourself space to think and to review and then come back with
- 9:35an answer. I'm not someone who's
- 9:36necessarily the best on the fly responding to those things, but
- 9:39once I have like time to think about it, I can come back with a
- 9:43better response or thoughts or something like that.
- 9:45So don't be afraid to give yourself some space.
- 9:47Yeah, because that was just the in the moment the list and
- 9:50clarify A preach, but that appreciate.
- 9:52But then there's, what do you do over the next couple of days
- 9:55once you have had that time to like digest and you know,
- 9:59reflect gut check. Like is, is some of this
- 10:01resonating? Is some of it not like, hey,
- 10:03actually, I don't think this is actually fitting with who I am
- 10:06or what I want to achieve. Like that's totally fine.
- 10:08You don't have to accept all feedback, but just, you know,
- 10:11give it some space and then decide how or what you want to
- 10:14change. And then finally, actually, I
- 10:17would encourage like check back in with a person, like say to
- 10:19them, you know, hey, I thought about your feedback.
- 10:21You can ask more clarifying questions.
- 10:23You can come up with an action plan.
- 10:25That's the time when you've had time to think and digest what
- 10:28they've said. Just sort of come back and turn
- 10:30around, not expecting yourself to like, you know, be able to
- 10:33respond on the fly when they're first telling you this new
- 10:36information. And I love the the structure,
- 10:40the framework. So listen, clarify, appreciate,
- 10:42because it also gives your brain something to do instead of like
- 10:46worrying about what comes next. So if those things are helpful
- 10:49for you, write them down and like try to practice them the
- 10:52next time you give feedback or go ask someone for feedback and
- 10:55then use this practice and then it'll become second nature.
- 10:58Totally. And so to wrap up, I think our
- 11:00takeaways like feed feedback and receiving feedback is a journey.
- 11:04It's an ongoing thing. You're going to change how you
- 11:06do it and like learn the skills that you need to do it well.
- 11:10It's also a two-part strategy. So how you act when you're first
- 11:14getting feedback, you know that listen, clarify, appreciate.
- 11:18And then what you do the next day, you know, gut check with
- 11:21yourself, decide what you want to take and what you want to do,
- 11:24and then check back in with the person who gave you the
- 11:26feedback. I love it.
- 11:29And stay tuned for the second episode of Yeah.
- 11:31Later on Thursday, we're going to talk about giving feedback.
