- 1:12SPEAKER_03: This week's interview, a special one, as we head inside the crease.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: We to have a sit-down interview with the starting goaltender, 20-year-old Hudson Sito.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: Great interview, has a lot of information to pass on.
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: If you are a young goaltender out there, he gives a lot of great tips to help you improve in the position.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: Make sure you stick around for that.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: It's a good one.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: About over 20 minutes of interview time with Hudson Sito, who's gracious to give us that time to sit down with us.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: We also introduce a new fan question segment in that interview process before putting Hudson through our shot clock, a chance to get to know the person behind the mask.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: But first, as always, let's take a look back at the week that was.
- 2:05SPEAKER_03: There was something to build on and something to clean up as this group moves through the season with another weekend of hockey head.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: The opportunity now is to take those lessons into the next puck drop, especially as we are still in the middle of this homestead wrapping up next weekend.
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Not this weekend coming up, but next weekend.
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: Still got three games at home.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: Let's do a little bit of home cooking.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: The Eagles welcomed the Grand Prairie Storm on Friday night.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: And unfortunately, it's the first time this season that the Eagles have lost on home ice.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: They ran into a very hot old tender in Jackson Dicker, who made a number of TSN top 10 highlight saves, including one on Bryson Insinger.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Eagles made it close in the third period, but unfortunately dropped the 3-1 decision at the hands of the Grand Prairie Storm.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: But that right back to it against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, the host of the Centennial Cup.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: And let's take a look at some of the highlights.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: Against a very tough oil baron team who is the host for the Centennial Cup this year.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: A little bit of a delay there.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: Captain Aid into Juckle.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: Take the opening face draw off, and we are underway.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: Thanks for joining us on Flow Hockey.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: Cohen Delt, but following up is early.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: He walked right in.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: Hey, shot he score! Early opportunity, early goal, just 30 seconds in.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: More though for McMurdo Elbear.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: He'll drop it there to stand Luke and Juck.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: That's the two clock tackle to play it up.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: That pass doesn't work.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Opportunity for Benoit.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: Great prize! What a stop by Warwick! As he robs Benoit backhand! He was right down main street comment in favor of the Eagles and the big plan to stop the skate off the ice.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Try to move it at the feet of the Oil Bear's defenders.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: And Intzinger scores for Mexico! Bryson Inzinger! As the shuttle bit is over! They needed that one! Inzinger has got his fifth of the season, tied at one with 635 left to go.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: Following up, aid into chucked loved down by Dells, almost a giveaway inside the offensive zone.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: And now it is as Gidney's got it for the Oil Barons.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: He'll play it around, looking for Dunn on the far side, plays it in front.
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: Gidney with space! What a stop by Warwick! Rebound! And somehow Warwick keeps it out and he'll jump on it like a cat on a bowl of metal.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: Brody Dells will play it right back in.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: That was almost the adventure.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: It's stolen.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: Stopped by Weston.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: Rebound.
- 4:48SPEAKER_03: He's got that dude.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: Props Dembo once again.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: Plays it out in front.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: Comes to Sky.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: Jot stopped by Weston.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: As it kind of happens suddenly behind the dead, Ryder Dembo once again.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: Snake bit as he looks to the heavens.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: He can't believe he missed that opportunity.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: The camera can catch me to see my hands are on top of my head.
- 5:09SPEAKER_04: It's been about three glorious deaths for Ryder Dembo.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: First shooter is gonna be Ryder Dembo for the Camor Eagles.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: He's gonna score, and here comes Ryder Dembo taking his time.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: He'll slowly bring the puck up one-on-one with Weston.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: Dembo.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Right in.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: He scores! Ryder Dembo! Now it's Anthony Hurley.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: How much more pressure you can put on the shoulders?
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: Young goaltender, he'll go one-on-one with the only oil bear to beat him tonight.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: Early he'll drive wide on the left-hand side here.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: Hurley shot stopped by Warren! Denise! Here comes Cohen Out! Assistant captain! He'll move right in one-on-one with Weston slows down.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: Dows has a boss skate!
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: What the play by Cohen Dows! Ernie West has got a feeling of dress.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: John Strand is looking back.
- 6:11SPEAKER_04: And Steven Warwick can win it.
- 6:15SPEAKER_04: 101 with Carter Ellsworth.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: Here comes Ellsworth.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: Game on his stick.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: He'll go one-on-one with Warwick, drives wide Ellsworth, shut up the post! And your Camor Eagles will win this hockey game!
- 6:35SPEAKER_04: 2-1 in a shootout! Your first star, Steven Warwick!
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: Steven Warwick picked up his first ever win in the AJHL and in an Eagles uniform.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: He was absolutely spectacular.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: As you heard, Ryder Dembo, Cohen Doust with the shootout winners.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: And what a hockey game.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: And of course, you can catch all the action this weekend once again as the Eagles are back to it.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: Get your tickets to CamoreEagles.ca slash tickets.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: And let's head to the interview portion of the show.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: And like I said, that my guest this week has a view of the game that comes with plenty of pressure, very little room for error.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: A goaltender has to read the play, play the puck through traffic, stay ready for the action if they're not getting a lot of shots, and they have to face Vulcanized rubber traveling at a hundred plus miles per hour.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: My guess this week is none other than number 30 for your Cam Moore Eagles, Hudson Seto.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: Enjoy the interview.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Hey, welcome back to the interview portion of Eagles Weekly.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: I'm Chris Klein with Hudson Seto, starting goaltender for your Cam Moore Eagles this year.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: Sito, how's it going today?
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: I'm good.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: How are you?
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: I'm doing not so bad.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Um, how would you think the season's going so far?
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: I know we just briefly talked about it.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: You're currently sitting um with a six and one record or six and two record, uh, off to a hot start, but what's your thoughts on the season so far?
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm really proud of the team's efforts through our uh first little stint of the season here.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: And uh personally, I've been happy with my game.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think I still have another level to reach, which I'm looking forward to continuing to build towards that.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think we could say the same thing as a team.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: We're not quite where we want to be collectively.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: So when we get there, we're gonna dominate games, we're gonna really excel in this league.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: One thing I gotta ask is your pad setup.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: You have like probably the sickest pad setup in the league.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: Um what the because I I looked at pictures of you last when you're kind of in an all-white gear.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: First of all, let's talk about the mask.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: Where did you get it done and what kind of was the butt went behind the inspiration of designing your mask?
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so my mask was done by a guy who's currently playing uh in the ECHL.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Um, his name's Logan Turnes, and it's a wrap, so it's not painted, but we kind of over the summer, um, and even at the end of last year, got together and started building this idea.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: And um the first rendering he sent me to how it ended up looking was like phenomenal, how much development went through that.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: And then, yeah, all of the elements on there, most of it's like personal things.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: So I have my dog on one side, uh, I've got my family's initials on the back of it, Irish flag.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: My mom was born in Ireland, so I'm half Irish.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: Um and then like some team elements too, three sisters binding the forehead, and then the Eagles logo on the chin and stuff.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: So yeah, it it's the first time I've ever had a mask done before.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: I've traditionally had an all-white mask, and I figure this is my last year of junior.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: I want to go all out, so we said let's do it, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: The bad setup too, the the bower with the blue and the white there.
- 9:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, do you get those like custom done, or was it just something that was available that you're like, man, those are really cool.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: So those are custom orders well.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: A lot of thought process goes into that too.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: For me, I know some guys like don't really care about what their gear looks like too much, but again, thought it was my last year of junior, so I'm gonna go big.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: Last year I had more whites worked in my gear.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: This year I said, let's do something a little bit more bold, but still be able to balance with the white jerseys.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: So that process involves me like coming up with a bunch of different renderings, and then I normally photoshop the pads onto photos of me to see how it blends with the jerseys and stuff.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: So it's a pretty uh meticulous process, but uh they turned out really, really nicely, custom ordered, and uh showed up a little later in the summer than I would have liked.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: But now they're very well broken in and doing me well.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: So how long does it take a set of pads to get broken in?
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: Is it kind of like skates where it takes like a couple skates to get used to them?
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, or it do they come arrive like really stiff and you have to like really, really like fold them and break them in?
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I would say um it takes about five skates to be real comfortable with it.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Even after that, they'll continue to break in, but you just start to feel more natural in them.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Um it's interesting though, goalie to goalie.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: I know like Jake Ottinger, he gets new gear every month.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: And I could I can never imagine like even if I had the privilege of getting sent gear for free all the time.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: I don't know if I'd be stepping into a new set of pads solely because I just like worked in ad and glove.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: Um, but so for him it works, and for me, yeah.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: Uh a couple skates with this set that I got over the summer and I was ready to go.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: All right, so let's take you let's go back.
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: I want to go back to when you first were growing up in St.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: Albert there.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: Uh how did you get into hockey and what made you want to be the guy stopping cut pucks?
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: Because yeah, you always hear to be a goalie, you gotta be a little bit crazy there.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: But what what made you want to get into hockey and stop pucks for to be a goalie?
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: I don't really know because there's uh people in my family that play hockey and not too high of a level or anything, but when uh I was little, there's photos of me putting on oven mitts as my goalie pads, and then I'd have a cabbage patch doll like beside me, my mini stick, goalie stick, and I'd hop in nets.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: And I just kind of gravitated towards it, I would think, because it's unique, and uh I like being the last line of defense, and at a young age that felt cool.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: Um honestly, I know a big draw for a lot of guys is the gear and everything, but I wouldn't say that was the first thing that popped in my head when I thought about being goalie.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: It was more like the pressure of the situations and stuff that you're put in.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, so uh started playing goalie when I was six.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: Uh I was born in St.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Albert, played one year of like initiation hockey as a player, and then we actually moved to Ontario and I was there for 10 years.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: And so my first year in Ontario, uh I switched to being goalie.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Um, and no regrets whatsoever.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: Do you remember your first game and how did it go?
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't think I do.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: I remember some games from that first year.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: Um we played at our our division was called Silver Stick, and so within our town there was four teams that we would play against each other.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: Um it was it was pretty competitive, and uh I think it was a great thing for my development, but nothing specific.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: A lot of good memories, you know, later in my career as a modern hockey player.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I remember my first time playing goalie in initiation too.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: Uh a little bit different than Pat said it set up there, but 14-0 shutout.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: Oh, nothing nothing to shake my head about.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: That's kind of good.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: So think about your time as a young goalie.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: What lesson or who did you learn from to that you know kind of really sticks to you?
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: Was there a lesson in the early years of learning how to stop hocks, learning angles, or maybe just that mental toughness of surrendering a goal and just being able to pop back up?
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Is there a lesson that sticks with you as you transition from minor league to junior hockey?
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I there's for sure one moment that stood out for me uh from early in my minor hockey career when I was in Ontario playing for the Whoopi Wildcats.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, we had a game against Peter Roe Pete's uh 2-1 at the time, Puck came down the ice and I went out to play it.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: This was I was in U 14 AAA, and I'm standing in between the hash marks and just completely froze mentally and was like, what do I do?
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Where do I put this puck?
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: I wasn't comfortable with playing the puck yet.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: And sure enough, their guy comes in, four checks me, takes puck off, and he scores.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: And I was pretty distraught after that game emotionally.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: Um, I think I sat on the curb outside with my mom and cried for a good while, thinking that I'd, you know, given up the game and how big of a deal it was.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: But I had a great coach that year, and I remember having a conversation with him about that game, and he throughout that whole season taught me a lot about mental resilience, and I think that was a very pivotal moment for me.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: Um, as you know, and as most people know, goaltending is I want to say it's kind of like golf where it is actually a lot mental, especially when you get to the level we're playing at.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: Everyone kind of has the skill sets to be successful.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: It's just whether or not you can keep your mind engaged, block out the distractions, uh, be able to just not have a fuzzy brain while tracking the puck, all these things.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that was definitely a pivotal moment for me.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: And obviously, you went from Ontario and you made your way back here um to Alberta.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: Just how did you become a Canmore Eagle?
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: You've been here for quite a bit of time, uh time, but what was that process to make your way back to Alberta?
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so right after COVID, we moved back, my family, and uh I played my first year back in St.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: Albert U16 AAA.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Uh that was a great season for me.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: Um, and then between then and the end of my minor hockey, I just played out with St.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Albert U18 AAA for two years.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: Um in my last year of U18 AAA, um, I got a call from uh Daryl.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: This was right around the time that the BC teams had left, and I had to change my affiliation from a team in that league to uh Canmore.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: And I we talked about it, and I was like, Yeah, of course.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: I I love Canmore.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: I had built up a good relationship, and it was about two weeks later that I then got a phone call from Andrew, and he said, Hey, we're gonna need you to back up for a game in olds.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: I was like, Okay, this was the morning of the game, and so I was like, Okay, gonna go sit on the bench for first age of Hell games, pretty cool.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: And then about five hours to game time, I get another phone call from Andrew, and I'm like, okay, maybe they've changed their mind or something, or what's happening.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: He says, No, actually, we're gonna need you to play.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: I'm like, all right then.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: So I guess for driving olds, me and my dad came down and I played my first game as an affiliate and ended up getting a shutout that game.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: So that was really cool experience for me.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Um, and I think that game itself tied me in well with the team.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: And then moving forwards, um, when I came in the next year and was playing full time with the Eagles, it was really easy to make that transition because I developed some relationships with the players already going into that season.
- 17:12SPEAKER_03: So you burst onto the scene with a shut up.
- 17:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it could you're thinking, man, this this game might be easy.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: Where was the transition?
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: So obviously going that jump from U 18 to junior is quite a bit of jump, but you got to experience that as an AP.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: Um, what did you find was the biggest transition from going from that level of midget triple A to junior hockey?
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: I would say uh the traffic.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: Um, that's something that when I entered my then first game of the following season full time with the Eagles, I was against Lloyd Minster.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: I remember being in the game and thinking, geez, there's a lot of bigger bodies out here, and it means that I have to do a lot more work to be looking around players.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: Um that naturally, as games go on, you learn to deal with it.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: And working with goalie coaches and everything, uh, work around that, get better at that skill.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: But for sure, the size of the players increases and then uh the shot speed too.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Of course, everyone's bigger, stronger, smarter players, know where to shoot more so than in U18.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: I think sometimes in U18 you've got the guys that score lots of goals and they can get a little bit selfish, almost to the point that I would know who's gonna shoot and who's gonna pass.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: Whereas in this league, because uh how high people want to win, it's people are more inclined to definitely be making a team play rather than individual play.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: So how did training um change from going that midget to junior?
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Obviously, you've worked with our goaltending coach Landon Bo here.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: Um what what do you now kind of focus on?
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: You mentioned everybody has the technique and kind of to be here.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: What are you kind of focusing on to improve on the technical side of goaltending that you've kind of transitioned as you enter junior hockey?
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think the biggest thing is adding pace to everything.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: So uh because the game gets faster when you go from U18 to junior, um, and like I said, most of the skill sets in terms of technical play and everything are developed.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: It's a matter of how much quicker can I do this and how much more efficiently can I do this without losing control.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: So this summer I worked with Dustin Schwartz, and our big thing was just developing a good blueprint for the season that I can keep coming back to.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: Uh that's both like mental reminders of okay, this is what I need to be focusing on today out on the ice and practice, but also uh like actual drills that I can set up, whether uh we have landing out or not, I can ask the players like this is something that we need to do to bring me back to square one, focus on the basic things.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then when those all come together, it just becomes natural and instinctual at that point.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: During a game, do you communicate a lot with your defenseman forwards, kind of knowing what was going what's going on?
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: You see, when the forwards come on the ice defense, they talk about, especially an offensive zone or defensive zone draw, they talk about what they're going to do.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: Um, do you kind of keep know what they're gonna do, or do you just focus on your game?
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: And then a secondary question in between periods, do you kind of just keep to yourself?
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: Do you talk with your backup, Steven Warwick?
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, does Andrew or Aaron Try try to talk to you, or do you just kind of have your own mental stuff that you do during intermissions?
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: Um, I talk, I would say a fair amount.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, I hope that the guys can hear me.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: I'd like to think that they do.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, there's for sure times where a play is developing in our end and we're about to run a certain breakout, but I see pressure coming from that side.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: Let's say it's an up and I start calling over and I recognize our defenseman gets his head up, looks over, makes that overplay instead of getting creamed up the wall.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: So that's an example of where I'm trying to use my voice to help out our back end for sure.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: Um, every now and then when there's a stretch guy standing at the blue line waiting for the breakaway, I normally go a little bit nuts and start screaming and yelling.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, and that gets the attention of probably everyone in the arena, but that way I know that breakaway guy is gonna be covered.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: And then uh in between periods, I'm pretty quiet.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: I like to just regain myself.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: The previous period doesn't matter, it's over with, so there's not too much point in reflecting on it unless there was any like uh big takeaways I needed to look at.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Otherwise, I'm just breathing, uh, a lot of deep breathing, and then visualizing just a couple like simple plays that are gonna happen in the next period so that I've kind of already seen those happen.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: So when I get out there, it's just uh repetition instead of something new that's coming to my brain.
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: Is there anything you haven't done as a goalie that you would like to do at some point in your career?
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: Whether it's you know, assist on a goal, score goal, yeah, goalie fight.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: Is there something that you're kind of like hoping happens, but it if it doesn't happen, you're okay with it?
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: I think it'd be really cool to score.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: I think uh maybe I need to put more work.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: And do in practice if the opportunity arises, but that's the thing with scoring a goalie goal, it has to be kind of the right situation.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: And you can't uh always draw those up on the whiteboard.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: So uh that would be really cool.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: Goalie fight, I would say I'm a little bit more intimidated, but I prefer I'm not a huge guy and I'm not very aggressive or angry or anything, but uh the three-game suspension that follows the goalie fight is not something that I'm huge on.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: Uh if it was different circumstances, maybe I'd be more open to it.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: But yeah, if I were to rank them, I'd I'd put scoring would definitely be at the top.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: And let's talk about like when you're inside the priest, when you're in the zone, when you're playing your best, what does the game feel like?
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: Does it slow down for you a little bit?
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: Are you running on instinct?
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: We heard Devin Cooley with the Calgary Flames talk about unconscious mind, conscious mind.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: Do you kind of have that conscious, unconscious mind where you're not really thinking of anything, you're just reacting to the play?
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: Or does the game just kind of slow down and you just feel like you could get anything in front of a puck?
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: I think earlier on in my goaltending career, I would come home from good games and say, wow, the puck was just moving so slowly.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: And it felt like I could see the puck really easily.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: But now that we're at such a high pace, it's harder to say the game felt like slow motion, and more so I was just instinctually playing well.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: And I think that when I'm instinctually playing well, I'm calm and uh mostly on the ice, I'm just focusing on my breathing.
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: Um, I do this technique, I basically count down from either 10 or 20 during the play at all times.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: And what that does is it keeps my brain focused on like just those numbers until the play starts to develop, as opposed to having my mind wander into what's going on in the crowd over here or what's Andrew doing on the bench, or what who do we have on the ice?
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: Like those are kind of uncontrollable factors that don't really affect whether or not I stop the clock.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: So I just mostly am focusing on keeping my brain in between the boards, is how I'd put it.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Where did you learn that from?
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: Was it a goalie coach?
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: Coach, did you read about it?
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: Like, where did you learn that mental toughness?
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: Because I I guarantee if you were to talk to other goalies, they're not counting down in the world.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: It was something that I started doing last year um because I noticed that my brain was kind of wandering during games.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: And that would lead to, you know, a goal goes in and you're like, oh, I wasn't really in the zone for that one.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: Like I I I feel like I could have been more focused on the play.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Um, but it was something keeping your brain between the boards is definitely something that I talked about with my goalie coach um uh when I was in PA for a little bit there.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, because that was right leading up to the world junior A, and and he explained that there's gonna be a lot of distractions with that whole tournament and everything.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: So the best thing that I could do was was focus on keeping my my brain and eyes in between the boards and on the ice in my zone.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: So that's where that's developed.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: And then yeah, the the counting down was a was a habit that started last year.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: Um yeah.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: Let's talk about that world junior A championship.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: You got the the opportunity to participate, walk me through that process.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: How did it feel putting on the Canadian Maple Leaf on?
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: Was it a boiler dream uh coming true?
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was it was pretty cool.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: Um, we definitely didn't have the results we wanted as a team, and I would say from an individual success standpoint, it was tough.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: And um, there would be things that I'd change about, you know, wish I could change about my performance in that tournament, but that doesn't take away from the experience.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: And it was amazing from when I first found out and got the call that I was coming to camp, and then uh being told that we're on the team and that whole process of those cuts happening, and then ultimately walking into the dressing room.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: We were in Calgary at the uh wind sport, and obviously they have all of the memorabilia and stuff from other Team Canada events.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: So we're sitting around looking at all that coaches come in, tell us we've made the team, it was pretty special.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: And then going to the tournament itself, getting to play against some pretty high quality players, players that are now playing in the NHL is was pretty cool too.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: So what's uh a shooter that you were playing against that you were just like, holy cow, like this this kid's got a rocket on him, or is there is there kind of a shot that you know you've you faced or a player that you faced where you're just like man, this guy is on something else.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: He's he's different from the rest.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: In that tournament, um, Anton Frondel was playing for Sweden.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: Um that was uh he had three goals on me in our first appearance with them.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: It was incredibly uh different than what I had been used to, and uh it makes sense.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: He ended up being a third overall pick and shell, he uh was a super high talent player, but he was really strong.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: They had him playing on the flank on his one-timer side on a power play, and they definitely exposed us on that at least once.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that he he of the players I've faced, I'd say he was definitely up there for sure.
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: Would you say that with a shooter, is it the sh is it kind of the smarts that kind of beat a goaltender, or is it the shot, or is it a combination of both?
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: Because you see all the time, like for example, Al V Xander Uvechki, he finds soft areas on the ice, but he also has a rocket of the shot.
- 27:16SPEAKER_03: What do you think is a little bit more tougher goaltender stop?
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: The shot or the smarts?
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: I think the smarts, I think when a player comes in and recognizes where the goalie is about to move and then makes uh a play off of that, uh, they increase their chances of scoring a lot.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: And having patience is a huge thing, I think, as a shooter.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: That sometimes as a goalie, watching the team in front of you panic and just shoot really quickly into the goalie's chest can be frustrating.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Now, it is like very high pressure situations, so I totally understand why that panic sets in and happens, but ultimately a thing that'll score a lot of guys' goals is their patience and waiting just for that small little fraction of the area to open up and then picking that spot.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: That uh panic is called the Chris Klein brand hockey there.
- 28:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, that's how I shot all of my and still continue.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: Just a couple more questions uh here for you there, Sito.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: We've been talking about one of the messages or the the um the mottos in the dressing room is the best part of playing in Canmore is playing in Canmore.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: Uh what makes this place so special for you to stick around for so many years and then eventually play your 20-year-old year here in Canmore?
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it's hard to ignore our fans.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: We really do have the best uh crowd support in the league.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Um I am 100% confident in saying that.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: The Aussies in corners, all of them at times, going crazy with the chanting and everything.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: Um, that's pretty special.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: That's something you don't get with any other team.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: Um you also can't ignore the physical location of where we are.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: So we were super fortunate this last weekend.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: We went on a team camping trip, uh, which was great for team bonding and a couple good laughs, good poker games.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: So all of that uh builds to why I've stayed and why it's a great experience playing here in Cantor.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: You don't really get any of those opportunities if you go somewhere else for sure.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: So, what do you hope to accomplish this season?
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: Obviously, Centennial Cup, we're hoping to host um this year, but where what are you hoping to accomplish and where do you hope your hockey career takes you?
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: Um I'm hoping to continue to play after this year for sure.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: I I really want to play university hockey.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Um to go back out east and be in Ontario would be really cool.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: I to reconnect with some people out there.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: Um, but I would also like to be close to home having been away for three years.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: So to have that opportunity would be really cool.
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: I think uh like from a statistical standpoint, I I want to be at the top, and that's something that I'm working towards, and the team is helping me work towards for sure.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: And then yeah, I mean the ultimate goal of winning the Centennial Cup.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: We made it to the finals and we won last year in the AJHL.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: So we've got that checked off, and I was really fortunate to be a part of that.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: Um, but we've got unfinished business and we we want the big trophy at the end.
- 30:07SPEAKER_03: So heck yeah.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: Well, we're going to introduce a new segment with you.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: It's called Ask It Eagle, where we give fans a chance to get their questions answered by their favorite eagle.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: And uh to get this started is Carter, age 11.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: Uh he asks if you could put one on play if you could put on player gear and take one shootout attempt against any NHL goalie, who would you choose and what mover you try?
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: That's tough.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Um who would I choose?
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna say Skinner.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: Just because you could probably score?
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: Well, you know what?
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: He's actually doing really well in Winnipeg now.
- 30:47SPEAKER_02: But I I'd like to go up head to head against him.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: And if I were to do a move, I think I'd probably I'd probably come in from the right side and go fake between the legs and then pop it back to my back end and try and go upstairs.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: There's no way that I'm scoring, but it would be uh pretty entertaining opportunity for sure.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: Use your sniper out there.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: Okay, last segment for you here there, Sito.
- 31:11SPEAKER_03: We're gonna give you 10 quick questions.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: First thing that come to your head just answer them.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: Alright, are you ready?
- 31:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: What's your nickname?
- 31:18SPEAKER_03: What's your who's your favorite goalie growing up?
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: Terry Price.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: What's your go-to pregame meal?
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: Uh normally chicken and rice.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: What song gets you ready for pock drop?
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: Um Joker and the Thief.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: That's a good one.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: What's your biggest game day superstition?
- 31:36SPEAKER_02: Um I don't have too many superstitions.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: It's more routine-based, but um if I don't shower on game day, that's that's that's a bad thing to skip out on for me.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: I that has to happen at some point for sure.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: What's your favorite movie?
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Um Goodwill Hunting.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: Interesting.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: I I never would have guessed that.
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I only watched that recently too, probably within the last two years, and it yeah, it instantly became my favorite movie.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: It's a good movie.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: It's a good movie.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: What's your hidden talent?
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: I play guitar, so that's something that I picked up last year.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Uh and keeps me busy at home at the Bill of the House.
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: What's your favorite thing to do in cam or away from hockey?
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: Cook.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: I like cooking.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: I heard you're a good cook.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: I heard you're a cook cook.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: If you weren't a hockey player, what would you dream job?
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: Formula One driver.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: Very nice.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: And one last question.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: What's three words that best describe you?
- 32:36SPEAKER_03: Um.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Resilience.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: And smart.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: Well, that you're dead and a stud in between the hypes as well.
