- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, it's the 18th of
- 0:16August and it's great to have your company as we begin another
- 0:19week unpacking God's word to see what's going to happen as Peter
- 0:24and his mates are going around preaching God's word, healing
- 0:29and doing all sorts of amazing things in Jesus name as our
- 0:33church begins to grow. Yes, this is the book talk of
- 0:36Acts and we are just a couple of chapters in and this is a story
- 0:41we are going to be settling into over the next few weeks as Jesus
- 0:46begins or continues rather his ministry after his resurrection.
- 0:51What a story it is. And this is our story friends.
- 0:54This is the same church that we belong to.
- 0:57So this is our origin story. So you can get on your superhero
- 1:01pose just like your favourite Marvel character who's had the
- 1:04first movie yet. Now it's time for the origin
- 1:06story. So let's go back friends to a
- 1:08world where the Spirit began to move.
- 1:12Reading together Acts chapter 3. Peter and John went to the
- 1:26temple one afternoon to take part in the 3:00 prayer service.
- 1:30As they approached the temple, a man lame from birth was carried
- 1:34in. Each day he was put beside the
- 1:36temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg
- 1:41from the people going into the temple.
- 1:44When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some
- 1:47money. Peter and John looked at him
- 1:50intently, and Peter said, Look at us.
- 1:53The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money.
- 1:56But Peter said, I don't have any silver or gold for you, but I'll
- 2:00give you what I have in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,
- 2:06get up and walk. Then Peter took the lame man by
- 2:11the right hand and helped him up.
- 2:13As he did, the man's feet and ankles were instantly healed and
- 2:17strengthened. He jumped up, stood on his feet
- 2:21and began to walk. Then walking, leaping and
- 2:24praising God, he went into the temple with them.
- 2:27All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God.
- 2:31When they realised he was the lame beggar they had seen so
- 2:34often at the beautiful gate, they were absolutely astounded.
- 2:39They all rushed out in amazement to Solomon's colonnade, where
- 2:43the man was holding tightly to Peter and John.
- 2:47Peter saw his opportunity and addressed the crowd.
- 2:50People of Israel, he said, what is so surprising about this?
- 2:55And why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our
- 2:59own power or godliness? For it is the God of Abraham,
- 3:03Isaac and Jacob, the God of all our ancestors, who has brought
- 3:08glory to his servant Jesus by doing this.
- 3:11This is the same Jesus whom you handed over and rejected before
- 3:15Pilate despite Pilate's decision to release him.
- 3:19You rejected this holy righteous 1 and instead demanded the
- 3:24release of a murderer. You killed the Author of life,
- 3:28but God raised him from the dead and we are witnesses of this
- 3:32fact. Through faith in the name of
- 3:35Jesus, this man was healed, and you know how crippled he was
- 3:39before. Faith in Jesus name has healed
- 3:42him before your very eyes. Friends, I realised that what
- 3:47you and your leaders did to Jesus was done in ignorance.
- 3:51But God was fulfilling what all the prophets had foretold about
- 3:54the Messiah, that he must suffer these things.
- 3:58Now repent of your sins and turn to God so that your sins may be
- 4:02wiped away. Then times of refreshment will
- 4:06come from the presence of the Lord, and He will again send you
- 4:11Jesus, your appointed Messiah, for he must remain in heaven
- 4:15until the time for the final restoration of all things, as
- 4:19God promised long ago through His holy prophets.
- 4:23Moses said, the Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet
- 4:27like me from among your own people.
- 4:30Listen carefully to everything he tells you.
- 4:34Then Moses said, anyone who will not listen to that prophet will
- 4:38be completely cut off from God's people.
- 4:42Starting with Samuel. Every prophet spoke about what
- 4:45is happening to day. You are the children of those
- 4:48prophets and you are included in the covenant God promised to
- 4:52your ancestors. For God said to Abraham, through
- 4:56your descendants, all the families on earth will be
- 4:59blessed. When God raised up his servant
- 5:02Jesus, he sent him first to you, people of Israel, to bless you
- 5:08by turning each of you back from your sinful ways.
- 5:22Jesus, thank you that long before the world is made, your
- 5:26rescue plan was set, and that you're going to come to save us
- 5:32and restore us before God your Father.
- 5:36And that you have power and dominion over all things.
- 5:40And you bring all those things back into the way that you
- 5:43wanted them to be. And in your good time, you'll
- 5:47restore us all to that perfect union with you and your Father
- 5:52and the Spirit. I thank you.
- 5:55Thank you for all that you do for us.
- 5:57Thank you for your love, for your forgiveness, for your
- 6:00kindness and your invitation into your beautiful, perfect
- 6:05family. We say yes, we accept your
- 6:09invitation. We are your children, and here
- 6:12we are. We pray all these things in your
- 6:15precious and holy name, Jesus, Amen.
