- 1:53Hope everyone had a great New Year's holiday. It's all over now,
- 1:57all the fun stuff, the parties, back to the and by the end
- 2:01of the week all those New Year's resolutions that you made probably are going to
- 2:06be gone. Statistically that that's what it shows. I will say this At
- 2:14the end of the year, you tend to get a little bit nostalgic,
- 2:15I guess looking back. So what I did New Year's Eve, I took
- 2:17the time to go back over the year twenty twenty three pictures, different guests,
- 2:22whatnot from the year, post of them on Day Island Radio and Facebook.
- 2:24So if you're really bored today, head over to the Facebook page Day
- 2:29alland Radio take a look at some of the picks snapped over the last year.
- 2:32Well, if your New Year's resolution was to step away from social media,
- 2:36then don't do that, I guess till the end of the week.
- 2:38But also I do want to mention this today is not a state holiday.
- 2:44However, if you're planning to do any business with the governmental entity, you
- 2:47may want to wait till tomorrow. It's not a state or federal holiday.
- 2:51There's still a lot of closures to David Knawa County Courthouse, for example,
- 2:53is closed today, as is Charleston City Hall. The kids, teachers and
- 2:58staffs of the public schools in Kanawak County coming back tomorrow. So just so
- 3:02you know now that we got all that taking care of, let's to welcome
- 3:05in Greg Thomas. Good morning, sir, how are you doing well?
- 3:08Doing well? Thanks for having me. Have a good holiday season. We
- 3:12did, We did, didn't just kind of stayed around here when I went
- 3:15up to from the Northern Panhandle. So we went up there for a couple
- 3:17of days over New Years and just got back yesterday and I heard good,
- 3:23you know, family stuff, kids stuff, any resolutions for you. I
- 3:28know, you know last year. I last year, I like made a
- 3:31bunch of sort of I'm getting older and I need to get healthier sort of
- 3:36changes that I like, I'm good about sticking to like for a certain amount
- 3:40of time, and then I get busy at work, and then I get
- 3:43away from it, and then I you know, so and then and then
- 3:45twelve o'clock rolls around. Well somebody who says, let's go to lunch.
- 3:49Yeah, I'm pretty I'm actually pretty good about the working out stuff. The
- 3:53diet stuff is what I'm I'll do really well for a couple of weeks,
- 3:57and then, you know, I'm busy, and you know, a week
- 4:00or two, and next thing, I know, I'm way off track.
- 4:01And then I got to bring it back. And so I have like certain
- 4:05routine, like certain things that I do that make me feel better, keep
- 4:10me on track. And for the most part I do them, but not
- 4:12always just like my reunions always like or you know, at the beginning of
- 4:15the year, I'm like, I've just got to stay you know, I
- 4:17know I'm not going to be perfect about it, but can I just do
- 4:19better than I did last year? Yeah, tho's little steps a little bit
- 4:24now. I'm like you as far as being somebody, when you're as busy
- 4:27as as what I am and what you are, it's not always easy to
- 4:30you know, chop up carrots and cell and it's so much easier to say,
- 4:35I'm hungry, it's lunchtime, I have five minutes. Let's go to
- 4:39Wendy's or whatever whatever that I do. Feel so much better. I did
- 4:42it. I did like a healthy kind of cleansed thing one time, and
- 4:46I felt so oh my gosh, I felt so much better. I lost
- 4:48weight, I felt better, I have more energy. It's just the sticking
- 4:51to it. Take it to it. It's the hardest part. Yeah.
- 4:55And our and our culture. You know, you've been around here long enough,
- 4:58you know, you know, our our culture sure lends itself to eating.
- 5:01And Millie Snyder and I from the shape shop talk about that all the
- 5:03time. It's like it's like, oh, well, let's get together for
- 5:06lunch. You know, you go over to my grandparents' house and you know
- 5:09when I was a kid, and it's like, hey, here's a piece
- 5:11of cake. Let's talk about stuff that's that I want to get to it.
- 5:15You, of course affiliated Greg with the group West Virginia citizensga's lawsuit abuse.
- 5:18Your group issued a press release within the last couple of days criticizing Attorney
- 5:24General and gublinnatorial candidate Patrick Morrissey. Let's get to the overall view here before
- 5:30getting specific why the press release of what was contained in well, what our
- 5:35organization has had a long held policy sort of view, and this actually dates
- 5:43all the way back to when Daryl McGraw was the Attorney General, and our
- 5:46group actually put out a report very similar to the report we just put out
- 5:50in two thousand and seven that was sort of critical of the way Daryl McGraw
- 5:55handled hiring outside council. So essentially, the state attorney general can hire outside
- 6:00council to go sue people, sue entity, sue businesses, do whatever,
- 6:05and they hire them under these like contingency fee things, right, So it's
- 6:10like, hey, you go sue this you know person, and you make
- 6:12you know, you get your thirty percent cut or whatever it is. And
- 6:15mcgrawl was really bad about it. He literally just went and hired his campaign
- 6:19contributors. They would go out, they'd sue somebody for one hundred million bucks
- 6:25and they'd get thirty three million dollars. Right. And so we put out
- 6:28this big report all the way back in two thousand and seven, which you
- 6:31can view on our website. We used to have it up there forever,
- 6:34and then we actually took it down for some reason, but we just we
- 6:36reposted it. Given that we did another another one. And so this was
- 6:42a big issue back when when Morrissey ran for Attorney General back in twenty twelve.
- 6:46This was like one of the things was like, we're going to have
- 6:48this reform. We're not going to do this anymore. And so the legislature
- 6:51actually passed a law. It was called te Pack, was like a transparency
- 6:57and you know, private attorney contracts or something like that. And so what
- 7:04it did was it essentially, you know, brought some transparency to that process,
- 7:08made it a bidding process, and it set out like you know kind
- 7:13of a you know, if the if the lawsuit's up to twenty five million,
- 7:15you pay him x percent. If it's up to fifty million, you
- 7:18pay them y percent or whatever. And so we put that into place and
- 7:23that has really that has helped, but it hasn't stopped it, right,
- 7:28And we were working on redoing this report because McGraw or you know Morrissey actually
- 7:35you know, we kind of we saw these lawsuits coming up, but there
- 7:38was never there was never sort of a place to have them where you kind
- 7:43of could see them all in the same place and add all the numbers up.
- 7:46And so we did that. We put together report that essentially says,
- 7:48hey, here's here's all of the times that the Attorney General's Office under Patrick
- 7:51Morrissey has hired outside council. Here's the lawsuits he's been involved in. Here's
- 7:56how much the lawyers have been paid. And the numbers are really really big.
- 8:01And so we were working on this before that opioid settlement came out.
- 8:05And if you remember, we came on and talked about that, whereof the
- 8:09billion dollar opi wood settlement, you know, private attorney's got one hundred and
- 8:13forty one million dollars is what they made off of that, and which we
- 8:18just thought was an egregious, really excessive amount of money. But it's not
- 8:22been limited to just that lawsuit. There's there's been dozens of other ones.
- 8:26We put together a report and we're going to take this report to the legislature
- 8:31and say, hey, look, you know we made you know, five
- 8:33six years ago, we passed something that made this better, but it's not
- 8:37fixed all the way yet, and we need to we need to address it
- 8:41and make some additional changes. Greg Thomas from West Virginia says, this is
- 8:43good loss of abuses here going back to that release, and you threw out
- 8:48the name Darrol McGraw. Now, with all due respect to McGraw and the
- 8:52McGrath family, to compare a Republican Attorney General Patrick Morsey in some ways to
- 9:00Daryl McGraw and Republican circles, that's about the same as talking about somebody's mama.
- 9:05I mean, I mean, I mean, you do realize, again,
- 9:07with all due respect to to the McGraw family, but it's well,
- 9:11and that's sort of the point here though, right It's like, look,
- 9:13this isn't you know, and as you know, I do you know,
- 9:16I do a lot of Republican politics, and West Virginia Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse
- 9:20is a non partisan organization. This isn't a partisan thing. This isn't a
- 9:24political thing. This is we were against abusing these types of lawsuits before and
- 9:30we still are. The problem is mcgre you know, Morrissey sort of campaigned
- 9:35on saying that he was going to sort of fix this, and it's gotten
- 9:37worse, not better, And you know there's a you know, the and
- 9:43look, we're I understand and this, you know, this is kind of
- 9:46the same thing we talked about when when the opoid settlement came out in one
- 9:50hundred and forty one million dollars that went to a lawyers. It's not that
- 9:54I don't think these guys do work, right, like we understand that they
- 9:56do work. You know, some of these guys are really really good lawyers.
- 10:00Like I'm not even saying that they don't deserve millions of dollars, but
- 10:03one hundred and forty one million dollars and then you know, we've got a
- 10:07handful of these other lawsuits out here where he's paid them another fifty three million
- 10:11dollars. I mean, so you know, there's a handful of lawyers that
- 10:16have been paid two hundred million dollars to file lawsuits on behalf of state at
- 10:20a state, in local county and municipalities in the last ten years. That's
- 10:26a lot of money, you know what I mean, that's a lot of
- 10:28money. And I mean we're not talking about this is going to five hundred
- 10:31lawyers. It's going to like ten. And so we just think it needs
- 10:35to be revisited. We think that there's things that can be done. You
- 10:39know. One of the biggest things we want to do, and actually,
- 10:41you know, to Morrisy's credit, he does one of the things we want
- 10:46to do is the the old restrictions we put on the Attorney General's office.
- 10:52We want to put those on cities and counties. And actually Morrisey does support
- 10:58that stance. So we appreciate that and we hope that that's something that we
- 11:01can work on together and get done during the session. So your issue,
- 11:05greg from what I'm gathering, your issue is not necessarily with lawsuits. It's
- 11:11more with the amount that the attorneys are being paid. Is that what you're
- 11:15saying? Yeah, And I think what people I think the thing to understand
- 11:18here right if you went down. Okay, let's say you know, you
- 11:24slip fall in a parking lot or something, right, and you sue somebody.
- 11:26The lawyers they come in, they might make thirty thirty five percent,
- 11:31But like they're doing all the work. They found you, they've got they're
- 11:35doing the work. They've got to go get all the evidence, all the
- 11:37things and file the paperwork. They're doing all the stuff on behalf of you.
- 11:41When you're doing this on behalf of the state, it's not all on
- 11:46them, right, Like, I mean, yeah, they're still doing the
- 11:48work, but you're doing it on behalf of the state. The likelihood that
- 11:50the state is going to get money out of the lawsuit is much much greater
- 11:54than some just private person or entity, And so I think we need to
- 12:00review whether it's you know, should we have the I mean, I think
- 12:03a basic question should be should we have the contingency fee arrangement at all in
- 12:07these lawsuits? Because should we do it hourly? You know, is there
- 12:09another way to do this where we're not paying lawyers one hundred and forty one
- 12:15million dollars that could have gone to people that need that need the money,
- 12:20you know, to to you know, this that was out of the opioid
- 12:22settlement. I mean, should they go to treatment programs, should they go
- 12:26to building a facility whatever? You know, It's just it's just so much
- 12:30money, and these are money. These are public funds, right, I
- 12:33mean, this is money that's coming back that's part of the public funds,
- 12:37you know. So I just think there needs to be better oversight of it.
- 12:39I think I just think we need to you know, two hundred I
- 12:43mean, if we were talking about two hundred million dollars in some other government
- 12:46agency that we were paying out to somebody, there'd be all kinds there'd be
- 12:50all kinds of audits and reviews and everything. There's nothing here other than meet
- 12:54us, you know. I mean, if we don't bring this up,
- 12:56nobody brings it up. We'll just lay this out there. You're not You're
- 13:01not a fan Greg at all of Patrick Morsey. As you've said on the
- 13:05show in the past. What specifically is there an issue? I know this
- 13:09is kind of a different event, but is there a specific is there heat?
- 13:11Is there beef between you and Look? I think it's just over look.
- 13:16I've been involved in the conservative cause in West Virginia since you know,
- 13:22I actually lived in Virginia for a little bit, work in DC after college,
- 13:26and moved back here in two thousand and two. I've just I've been
- 13:28involved in the Republican cause here, and most people just sort of, you
- 13:33know, are part of that team. They find their role, they do
- 13:35their stuff. And and look, Morrisey's just been his own person that does
- 13:43his own thing. He's not part of the team. It's just you know,
- 13:48it's it's always about him, right, It's always about him. It's
- 13:50always advancing his career, whatever he's got to do. And I think,
- 13:54look, I think that's what this that's what this rate here is about,
- 13:58too, right. I mean, I think when he wanted to get elected
- 14:01in twenty twelve, he was against all this stuff. This was terrible,
- 14:03We're going to reform it, We're going to do all this stuff. And
- 14:07then he comes out and he pays the lawyers the maximum amount allowed by law,
- 14:11which, by the way, he didn't restrict. The legislature passed a
- 14:15law to restrict how much they could get paid, right, Like, he
- 14:16didn't do that. I mean, he wants to go out and say,
- 14:20oh, you know, I cut these great deals. He didn't cut any
- 14:22deals. He paid. There is a pay scale and it says you can
- 14:26only pay them up to this much, and he paid them the maximum amount.
- 14:28Every time it's paying somebody the maximum amount you're allowed to pay them.
- 14:33A great deal for taxpayers, of course it isn't, you know, So
- 14:35I think that's just what it is. I mean, it's not. Look,
- 14:37it's nothing personal. You know. Look I could I say good.
- 14:41You know, Look, Morrissey has done a good job insuing the federal government
- 14:46and those kind of things like that. That really has been something he's done
- 14:48a pretty good job of. But this end of it, he's been worse
- 14:52than McGraw, you know. And that's just a reality. I mean,
- 14:56this isn't anything to do with him as a candidate or him as a person.
- 15:00And as the attorney general he has he has paid hundreds of millions of
- 15:05dollars out to personal injury lawyers, and that's far more than what mcgrawl ever
- 15:11did. And that's what we're pointing out. But before we go to break,
- 15:13because I know I'll get a text about this and I'll give you an
- 15:16opportunity to throw it out there again. Are you supporting greg Or on the
- 15:22payroll for any other candidates. Oh no, no, Look, I'd vote
- 15:26for anybody running for governor other than Morcy. Anybody but Morrisey's who I would
- 15:31vote for. Doesn't get more plain than that, uh nine twenty two.

- 18:47Tex says, would Greg vote for Steve Williams over Morrissey? Uh No,
- 18:51I wouldn't democrat? I mean you said because what you said was going to
- 18:56break. You said that you would support any other Republican running ETCENTA Morsey.
- 19:00But now this text are saying, would you go as far as to vote
- 19:02for Steve Williams a Democrat? Now, I wouldn't vote for a Democrat.
- 19:03I mean, i'd vote for I mean, I still have to sleep,
- 19:07you know what I mean. I gotta go to bed, like I can't
- 19:08just stay up and think about it. I don't know, you know.
- 19:12I mean, look, I didn't vote for Morrissey in that US Senate race
- 19:17in twenty eighteen. I voted for whoever the Libertarian was in the fall,
- 19:21you know what I mean. So, and usually you know, the Libertarians
- 19:23put somebody up, you know, you could have somebody for you know,
- 19:26I don't know if the Constitution folks are going to have, you know,
- 19:29get the Marshall Wilson or one of those guys on. But you know,
- 19:32I probably, I mean, i'd support Marshall Wilson of heat of Morrissey for
- 19:36sure. Texas. Never thought I would agree with Greg Thomas on anything but
- 19:38the fact that Morrissey is an out of state opportunist who wants to rule West
- 19:41Virginia as a well known fact. I'm just surprised to see a Republican agree
- 19:45with that. Well, that's the thing about just being principled, right,
- 19:49you get you know, I can come in here and you know, I
- 19:53mean most often I'm partisan because I believe that the local the West Virginia Party
- 20:00and the things we've done at the Capitol have have kind of been you know,
- 20:04I do think it's the most conservative legislature in the country and I support
- 20:07those, you know, most of the policies that they enact. But look,
- 20:11when somebody goes out and like I said during the thing, I mean,
- 20:15you know, it's not that I don't mean you know Morsey, you
- 20:17know, the West Virginia versus EPA. I mean that, you know,
- 20:19there's some big time things that have come out of that office that have been
- 20:22very helpful. I just think it's important to highlight the things that have not
- 20:29gone well and the things that we could improve upon. And now's a good
- 20:33time. I mean, look, the reason that we did this report now
- 20:37is because we want to make some changes before we have we're gonna have a
- 20:40new Attorney general. Right, so yeah, there am so you know,
- 20:42let's you know, we're gonna have a new attorney general. Can we make
- 20:45some adjustments as this new attorney general comes in and and really revisit how we
- 20:49handle this situation and just make sure that it's it's done better than what it
- 20:53has been Texas. When the state hires lawyers under contingency, the lawyers absorb
- 20:59the expense. That is the case. My point though, and that's why
- 21:04I'm saying, it's not that I don't think these guys should get paid.
- 21:07It's not that it's not that I don't think they should get paid a pretty
- 21:11healthy sum. It's just is that arrangement the best case is that arrangement the
- 21:18best use of funds for the taxpayers? Right? I mean, you know,
- 21:22could we go out and have could we go out and hire somebody hourly
- 21:26that could also bring in, you know, handle this stuff that we don't
- 21:30have to do on a contingency fee thing. You know, we we have
- 21:34a little bit of that pay scale in there, but it only went up
- 21:37to a certain dollar figure, and all of a sudden we ended up in
- 21:40a billion dollar settlement. So the numbers just got That's what made those numbers
- 21:45get really really big was that the the billion dollars was so big. So
- 21:48you know, look, I just think if you if you went out and
- 21:52you actually made these guys that were involved in this lawsuit, say keeping keep
- 21:57a log of how much time they hourly. They're getting paid a huge sum
- 22:02out, you know what I mean, Like that number hourly would be enormous,
- 22:06right, And the other point of that is just the risk is so
- 22:10far less when you're suing somebody on behalf of the state. If you're just
- 22:12suing somebody's just a private class action, and I just think that has to
- 22:15be taken into account, is our point. All Right, So the polls
- 22:18has shown that Patrick Morrissey's well in the lead in the race for governor,
- 22:22although it's still early. Keep in mind the filing period isn't officially even here
- 22:25yet. You think the others can make up ground. Yeah, Look,
- 22:27I think anybody could win that race. I don't think there's Morsey obviously is
- 22:33in the lead right now. Morrisey's run statewide multiple times. I'm going to
- 22:38be said for that. You know, his name id's a significantly higher than
- 22:42everybody else, and that's really part of the I mean, that's why I
- 22:45think the others can win. I mean, for Morrisey to have a ninety
- 22:48percent name ID but only be it like twenty five twenty eight percent of the
- 22:52vote. That means there's a whole bunch of people that know him that aren't
- 22:56choosing to vote for him, and they're saying, hey, I'm either going
- 22:59to pick somebody else or I'm reserving my right to pick somebody else in the
- 23:03future. Right. Look, you know, I think you know Mac.
- 23:08Mac doesn't have the financial resources and his campaigns are not gonna have the financial
- 23:14resources of the others. But Mac does a pretty good job of getting hisself
- 23:17out there. Right, He's got his he's got his veteran base, especially
- 23:19in the last month or so following the debate and more. Yeah, you
- 23:22know, he does a good job of things like that. People understand he's
- 23:26a conservative obviously, More Capito and you know, the whole family stuff,
- 23:30and More's a young, energetic guy. He's been he's been working hard,
- 23:34he's been doing a good job on the campaign trail. He's certainly in the
- 23:37mix. And then you've got Chris Miller, who's sort of this outsider candidate
- 23:42that is still behind in the polls, but he has the most money and
- 23:48he has the ability to put more money in. He's not even started spending
- 23:51it, he's never started spending it yet, which you know, people know
- 23:53I'm in people know I'm buddies with Chris, and like, you know,
- 23:57if I were managing that, I would have spent some money in the fall.
- 24:02H there. You know, their strategy has been different. But you
- 24:07know, I think there's a point when it'll be too late for Chris,
- 24:11you know what I mean. I don't know when that is, you know,
- 24:14I don't I don't think he's I don't think he's passed the too late
- 24:15point. I just don't know when that is. I you know, March
- 24:18first would definitely be that. Yeah, February first may be too late,
- 24:22you know what I mean. So I think it's a matter of, you
- 24:25know, when does he get going? And then I think I think you're
- 24:27going to see pretty early with Chris though. I mean, I think once
- 24:30he does start spending the money, you're either going to see that, you
- 24:33know, people were either going to like that outsidery candidate, business guy,
- 24:38young energetic person, uh, or it's not gonna catch right, And so
- 24:42I think you'll know, you know, I don't think this is going to
- 24:45be one of those things where you know, it's like May first and we're
- 24:47going, Oh my gosh, who's going you know, is Chris can Chris
- 24:49win? I think you're gonna know March first, whether Chris can win or
- 24:52not, because it's either gone his this advertising will either have started and caught
- 24:56on or it hasn't. Uh so and and look, and the reality is,
- 25:00if you know, if Chris's media doesn't catch on, and if you
- 25:03know, Moore can't find a way to do that, or Mitt can't find
- 25:07enough earned media to sort of stay in the mix on this, if the
- 25:10other guys can't get there, you know, Morrissey has a ceiling, but
- 25:15his ceiling is high enough to win, you know what I mean, So
- 25:18like he has enough building name ID to where even if he doesn't get that
- 25:22many more votes, if the other guys come up short, you know,
- 25:25Morrissey can certainly, you know, certainly isn't a position to win. There
- 25:29for the record, just so I could be a transparent as possible going back
- 25:30to morris City, we'll move on to something else. I don't want to
- 25:33find myself in the crosshairs so citizens and gets lost suit of you. So
- 25:36I want to make sure I'm transparent as well. Had about a thirty minute
- 25:38conversation with ag Morrissey. Last week. He called me in the early afternoon
- 25:42hour, which it's after we had the little impromptu reporters round table, if
- 25:47you will, with our Brad mclhenny and Steven Allen Adams of Ogden Newspapers.
- 25:49Now, he took issue with some of the things that were said on the
- 25:52show, and that certainly is just right. We had a very civil,
- 25:56gentlemanlike conversation, conversation for about thirty minutes, talking about his issues with the
- 26:02press and his decision not to appear at the debate of Morgantown with Hoppy last
- 26:04month, and we talked about the other you know, the other candidates as
- 26:11well, and we talked about the initial polls for governor that seemed to be
- 26:15his big bone of contention. Mistakes were made in the polling which had been
- 26:18well documented. And I did invite him on the show as early as I
- 26:22think. The last conversation or last text I sent him was on Friday.
- 26:26I told him check his calendar, get back with me what you said.
- 26:29He would, and he's got an open slot on the show as a candidate
- 26:33for governor anytime that he wants, so I don't want people to think we're
- 26:37just ganging up on Patrick Morrison here. He's more than welcome to come on
- 26:40the show, as is any candidate for any office. He's chosen not to
- 26:42do that so far, But I just wanted to wanted to kind of get
- 26:45that out there now before a couple of things before we let you go,
- 26:49Greg, I want to get your take on this. All these you know,
- 26:55political rumors going around, and what happens is a lot of times sometimes
- 26:59people will start their own rumors within and you know this, within a campaign,
- 27:03we'll start rumors about the other campaign just to kind of get people talking.
- 27:06I'm sure you've heard him as I have. And it has to do
- 27:08with Congressman Alex Mooney that he may drop out of the race for US Senate.
- 27:11What are you hearing there? He's absolutely not doing that. I mean,
- 27:15I think that's obviously something that's you know, sort of put on by
- 27:19the other side to say, but no, Mooney, that's that's kind of
- 27:22what I was getting out. Moody's one hundred percent gonna run. I mean,
- 27:25look, do I think he's got a great chance right now? Certainly
- 27:29not, you know, which isn't something I you know, as I've said
- 27:33on this show on other shows, I mean even back in the spring,
- 27:36I thought Mooney should have had a chance. I think he didn't have a
- 27:37very good summer. He didn't make up the ground he needed to, he
- 27:41didn't raise the money he needed to. And now I just think he's in
- 27:44a really tough spot. But no, I think he's going to finish through
- 27:47with this, and you know he's gonna run. And if he does,
- 27:51I mean, look, not everybody has to be in office forever, right,
- 27:56Like all these people, it's like, what's gonna you know, there's
- 27:57a lot of people that sort of make this up or out move, right,
- 28:02It's like, hey, I've been and honestly, you see it a
- 28:04lot for people that have been doing it about ten years, which guess what,
- 28:07He's been doing it about ten years, right, So you see this
- 28:11a lot at that ten year mark where it's like I'm either going to make
- 28:15a move and I'm gonna get this promotion, I'm gonna do this new job,
- 28:18or I'm just gonna go do something else, you know, And I
- 28:21certainly think that's where Moony's at. I just I think he's in a position,
- 28:25you know, he lives out there in that Eastern Panhandle that's close enough
- 28:29to you know, he could work for some conservative he could go work for
- 28:33Club for Growth, right, like they're spending all his money. I mean,
- 28:36he could go work for a conservative group like that or some other conservative
- 28:40group in DC and drive down from the Eastern Panhandle. So I think there's
- 28:44just a lot of I think there'll be a lot of options available to him,
- 28:48and I'm sure that's what he's looking at. Right. It's like,
- 28:49well, I've been in Congress, I've done this stuff, you know.
- 28:52I'm sure he had sort of a checklist of things that he wanted to get
- 28:56done. He's probably done with it, and now it's like, where do
- 28:59I go from here? And so no, he's one hundred percent gonna run.
- 29:03I mean I've talked to him personally. I've talked to is you know
- 29:06now former campaign manager and others, and you know, I just think it's
- 29:11you know, he's definitely gonna run for Senate and we're gonna have that election
- 29:15and it's look, it's going to get more competitive than it is now.
- 29:19I don't know how much more competitive, but uh, but you know that
- 29:23that race will get a little bit closer, and you know is more and
- 29:26more people pay attention to it. But but no, he's gonna run.
- 29:30But Davey Alan Chilling five any line bright to apart by General Hardware and lumber

- 29:41you get a quote from General Hardware and number of Winfield. All right,
- 29:42let's talk about Alex Mooney's opponent, and that's Governor Jim Justice. Brad's got
- 29:48to I'm gonna get in this a little later on if I can. But
- 29:49Brad's got a story posted on the website. There's a hearing tomorrow in Court
- 29:53and Virginia on the infamous helicopter copteror gate if you will. Uh, all
- 30:00these things keep coming up, almost like with Trump. All these things just
- 30:03keep coming up and keep coming up, and the people, you know,
- 30:07again, it's a lot can happen between now May, but the people just
- 30:10don't seem to care. Governor Justice just keeps rolling along. Man. I
- 30:14think it is. I think it's just so complicated. I mean, I'm
- 30:18some you know obviously, like I'm involved in this in these sort of you
- 30:22know, I work in politics for a living. I'm you know, work
- 30:25with the Governor's office on with clients of mine and do different stuff. I
- 30:27mean, I know all these people personally, not that I don't know the
- 30:30governor very well personally, but I mean a lot of people around them I
- 30:33know personally. If I don't really understand, like I couldn't sit here and
- 30:38describe all of this stuff in detail and like make a map for you and
- 30:41show you what it all means. I just don't have any idea how somebody
- 30:45that like has a real life and does real stuff I'll be able to follow
- 30:48this. I mean, it's really difficult and it's complicated, and I think
- 30:53the other the flip side, I mean the other aspect of it too is
- 30:57you know, here's the problem. And look, I'm somebody that would have
- 31:02probably really supported a more conservative candidate like Mooney before, right, I think
- 31:07the problem that that campaign had was, you know, Governor Justice started out
- 31:11as a Democrat. Even when he switched parties, he still really wasn't with
- 31:17us on policy stuff. And then there was a point where all of a
- 31:21sudden he really started working with the Republican legislature and getting things done. And
- 31:27so if you look at the governor's record over the last five years, it
- 31:33has been very conservative, and I think that's the tie. You know,
- 31:36So look is he is he you know, a pure conservative, And you
- 31:41know, you want to go back and look at something he said six years
- 31:44ago and say, see, I told you, Okay, that's certainly a
- 31:48point, and you can do that and you can feel better about it.
- 31:52But for the average person that doesn't play gotcha politics and just looks at it
- 31:56and says, hey, what have you done in the last past year or
- 32:00two that has impacted my life? And the reality is the governor has been
- 32:05working with the Republican legislature on passing the most conservative agenda policy agenda in the
- 32:09country, and and so I think that's what people look at now. You
- 32:15know, look, I'm not saying that I have no idea about this financial
- 32:19situation. And you know, it would have to be something really drastic that
- 32:22people saw, right. I mean, it would have to be you know,
- 32:27get off an orphanage or something bankruptcy, but it would honestly, I
- 32:30think it have to be it has to be something with the Greenbrier, right,
- 32:34because that's something people see, you know what I mean. The coal
- 32:36mines are out of mind. The coal mines are out of sight. The
- 32:38farms that he has everywhere, and all this other property, it's all somewhere
- 32:42else. The Greenbrier is the most visible thing he has. To me,
- 32:46that's got to be the thing that, like, if something happened with the
- 32:51Greenbrier, that might be something that the actual public could could get their at
- 32:57least they can understand it. That's the thing that's visible. This other stuff
- 33:00is this bank and that bank, and this loan, and it's one hundred
- 33:04million, and it's ten million, and it's a built who knows, you
- 33:07know, they're all just numbers. But the Greenbrier is the tangible thing that
- 33:10I think people can understand. But look, at the end of the day,
- 33:15his approvals really high. You know, he's been working with the Republican
- 33:20legislature, you know, and I just think he's, you know, in
- 33:24a pretty good position to be the next US Senator. Tex says some Democrat
- 33:29in Greg's childhood must have not bought him ice cream, and Gregg's to holds
- 33:31a grudge. Greg, how could you waste your vote on a libertarian or
- 33:37Morrissey as much as you trashed him. I think that's kind of in reference
- 33:39to they said, would you support Steve Williams over morris I mean, so
- 33:44you're Republican no matter what, or a libertarian. I mean, I don't
- 33:49know. I mean, I guess if there was like a super awesome Democrat
- 33:52for some office that I like, I mean, I just I can't think
- 33:53of any of the top Steve Williams is not the worst possible, not Steven
- 33:58Smith. Okay, no, no, no, no no, And I
- 34:00just Democrats is not going to win those now. I agree that the Democrats
- 34:05not going to win, So it doesn't really matter, you know, if
- 34:07you're going to just I mean to me, even for the Democrat be throwing
- 34:08your voteway to ask you this, you got to go. Senator Mansion is
- 34:12beginning his nationwide tour searching for the middle or the truth or whatever thoughts there
- 34:17on his world tour, Look, Hewide Tour. He really wants to run
- 34:22for president, but his only way he can run for president is if he
- 34:24gets that nomination from the No Labels Party, because they have been doing all
- 34:29the leg work on getting making sure they're on ballots all over the country.
- 34:31So he's either going to get the nomination, the nomination from No Labels and
- 34:37be their standard bearer for president on the ballot and all these states that they've
- 34:42gotten on or he isn't. And if he doesn't get that, there's no
- 34:45pathway because it is I mean, it is really difficult to get on the
- 34:49ballot and all these things, I mean No Labels. Then No Labels organization
- 34:52has been working on it for years, you know. So he's either going
- 34:55to be able to benefit from all the work they've done on getting on these
- 34:58ballots or not. And if he doesn't, he doesn't, you know,
- 35:00if he gets the No Labels he runs for president. If he doesn't,
- 35:05he doesn't run for president. Thirty seconds. Session starts next week. Anything
- 35:07in particular, you'll be keeping your eyes on. Uh. Look, I
- 35:10think that we're sort of at this place right where you're about to have a
- 35:14new governor, You're about to have all these new you know, many low
- 35:16legislators. I think you're going to see a lot of people that just have
- 35:21their sort of their wish list over the last four or five years that things
- 35:24that they haven't gotten done that they're going to get done because you're you're going
- 35:29to have a new governor. You're going to have a ton of new priorities
- 35:30next time around. So I think you're just going to see a lot of
- 35:34people sort of you know, whatever meat was left on the bone, they're
- 35:37going to be taken care of here in the next next sixty days. Greg

- 39:29With the new year comes new laws taking effect. One of those has to
- 39:35do with your cars inspection sticker. It's now every two years. And again,
- 39:39man, I have forgotten by that that was passed by the legislature last
- 39:42year, but now that goes into effect, assigned into law by the governor.
- 39:45So starting today, your car's inspection sticker is now every two years as
- 39:53fun, and I mentioned earlier at the top of the program that as far
- 39:58as the state governmental offices go, it is not a state holiday today.
- 40:01However, some governmental entities are closed. In Canawa County. The courthouse is
- 40:07closed today and also the city Hall is closed today, so they are not
- 40:15here, they're not there. They're not here, they're not there, they're
- 40:17not anywhere. They're closed day. Kanagh County schools also were closed to day.
- 40:21They head back tomorrow. There was school however, in Putnam County.
- 40:23I know this because what used to during the holiday break take me five minutes
- 40:28or so getting from my house to the interstate was back up to about fifteen
- 40:34minutes this morning. Because you know, parents and grandparents do not let their
- 40:37kids, heaven forbid, get on a school bus. But that's another story

- 40:53hire Morgan to Morgan in America's largest injury law firm. They are a
- 40:58new sponsor to the show. So welcome, Welcome, Welcome, Texas.
- 41:01There's a rumor that Mac Warner's ideas come to him after he eats paint chips.
- 41:06I got a texture that is fascinated for some reason, I was saying
- 41:09that Mac Warner eats paint chips. I worked for Mac Warner for four years.
- 41:14I can tell you I saw you meet a lot of things. Okay,
- 41:15he's a military guy, you know, so overseas. I'm sure you
- 41:20ate a lot of weird paint chips, not one of them. Just throwing
- 41:23that out there, Texas. Greg Thomas is the Joe Flacco of mediocre Republicans.
- 41:30Hey, let me just say this. You know I'm an NFL fan.
- 41:32All due respect to mister Flacco. I don't know how that can necessarily
- 41:37compaar us to Greg Thomas, but I will say Brown's are just killing it
- 41:40right now. It's a great story. So from my good friends Amanda Baron
- 41:44and Sean Meyer and Jim Workman and my brother in law Ron, congratulations because
- 41:49the Browns have had a pretty good season. Now. Where it's going to
- 41:51go from here, I don't know. I guess we'll wait and see.
- 41:54Jeff and Kerry have been talking about this throughout the morning. Hurricane City Council
- 42:00we will meet tonight and they will be allowing public comment on a proposed water
- 42:04rate hike. This is going on in a lot of areas right now,
- 42:07and it's a pretty significant raise. So if you're a customer of the water
- 42:12and sewer systems there, you have an opportunity to weigh in tonight. The
- 42:15meeting is at six point thirty at Hurricane City Hall. I mentioned this when
- 42:21I was talking to Greg earlier. The Governor's helicopter. Brad is a story
- 42:23post at wv metronews dot com. There is a motion tomorrow at two o'clock
- 42:29in the Western District Court of Virginia about this. Brad again has a whole
- 42:34story laid out on the website. US Marshalls were ordered to seize the chopper
- 42:37earlier of Bluestone Resources. Now this is a company owned by the Justice family
- 42:42businesses and they talking about the Justice side of things, are objected to the
- 42:46seizure of the helicopter. It's a long story, as Greg kind of pointed
- 42:51out, and it's a complicated story. Read all about it online. Brad
- 42:53will be covered and hear it's tomorrow. And as a side note, I'll
- 42:59say this, be ready for your television, your radio, your social media
- 43:04to be littered with a lot of political ads now that the new year is
- 43:07here. We in the business, of course love that, but it's going
- 43:13to get kind of ugly, particularly I think in this Senate race between Governor
- 43:16Justice and Congressman Alex Mooney, a whole lot of negative ads are coming.
- 43:22And Greg and I talked about this a little bit earlier this morning. I
- 43:24think Chris Miller is about to unleash a whole lot of money trying to buy
- 43:29himself some more name recognition as he tries to get elected governor. It's been
- 43:32said about Miller that I said, Charleston in the Huntington areas, there's not
- 43:36a lot of name recognition if you go let's say Morgantown, Wheeling, whatever.
- 43:38But you got that kind of money, it'll buy a lot of name
- 43:42recognition. And I think you're about to see Chris Miller unleash the chage.
- 43:46Jeff, Jeff Jenkins, that's the guy's last name. It joins us in
- 43:50the news room, Jeff, good morning. I know you guys are really
- 43:52really busy this morning. Not the way the City of Charleston wanted to start
- 43:57things out. Shooting reported yesterday. It was a shooting, you know,
- 44:00no shooting as minor, but this wasn't life threatening injuries. It was about
- 44:07six thirty over Adam fortunately a notorious intersection seventh seventh Street, Park Avenue,
- 44:15and a guy was shot in the leg and they were on the scene.
- 44:20I've heard some emergency dispatcher traffic. Charleston Fire Department medics were there really quickly.
- 44:27Charleston Police were there really quickly. They had already you know, found
- 44:30the suspect, found the gun, and so we don't have any names yet,
- 44:37but we know that that the wound was in the leg and they were
- 44:39on the scene pretty quickly. So we're hoping and we're expecting to get some
- 44:44names out later today from the police. Well else we keep an eye on
- 44:46today. Jee. Well, you know, this is your beginning of the
- 44:50year here, and so we've got things that are happening in state government.
- 44:55Session starts next week. Session starts a week from tomorrow, right. You
- 45:00know, the much talked about DHHR is now officially in three agencies, right
- 45:06because remember it was a split, so that official they've been working on it,
- 45:08so it officially kind of starts now January starts. So we have that.
- 45:15We're following up on that today. Charleston City Council doesn't meet until tomorrow
- 45:21night, so they'll have their meeting tomorrow night, and I think the mayor
- 45:24has told you before that her kind of state of the City address is tomorrow
- 45:28night, so that'll be if that'll be of interest to see what happens with
- 45:31that. And so we're just you know, getting it rolling here and there
- 45:36was there's a good bit of news actually during I know a lot of people
- 45:39had like in between both holidays off, you know, so maybe you're all
- 45:44just trying to catch up. Yeah, but there was I mean, there
- 45:45was a good bit of news during that. So I encourage you to go
- 45:47back and read our stories if we're just trying to catch up, all right,
- 45:51Jeff, I appreciate it. Thanks a lot to this nine fifty three

- 48:19want to give a huge thanks to the Republican Legislature and governor for extending the
- 48:22car inspection to two years. I was just thinking to myself yesterday what West
- 48:25Virginia needs is more. Jelopes on the road says, I'm so sorry,
- 48:30but Democrats can actually be shocked and why so many people including myself have left
- 48:35their party and are still leaving in droves. Leave out, nasty, snide
- 48:37and rude. Many talk about those they don't agree with. They have the
- 48:42goal to lecture the rest of us on how tolerant they are, how accepting
- 48:45they are. No wonder these younger generations are as out of control when it
- 48:49comes to bullying, intimidation, name calling, an assault, and mob mentality.
- 48:52They see the power of the d in that no one is ever held
- 48:55accountable for their words, choices or actions. Congratulations Dems, you must be
- 49:00proud. Texas Day Friendly reminded that everyone's fishing licenses in Westerrginia expired yesterday.
- 49:07Our legislators should take notes from Ohio and other neighbors and change our fishing license
- 49:10to three hundred and sixty five days from day to purchase. As it stands
- 49:13now, if you don't renew it today, you won't get full value on
- 49:16your license purchase. This discourages folks from getting the fishy license in the fall,
- 49:21which is peak trout Seas and Texas Dear Dave, happy new You're Charleston's
- 49:24side note the mac Warner debate. It's twenty twenty four. It's not paint
- 49:29chips, it's not microplastics. Keep up people, So it's a texture.
- 49:31I want to get this in. I was reading an article over the weekend
- 49:35in a Wall Street Journal I had to do with COVID and our country's response
- 49:38to it. Hard to believe it was around this time, four years ago
- 49:42we started hearing reports of this mysterious new virus. Well, four years later,
- 49:46three million deaths worldwide, one point one million in America, and it's
- 49:50not gone away yet, even with vaccination. In fact, my wife and
- 49:52our neighbors spent their holidays confined to their house with no visitors and barely able
- 49:57to get out of bed due to COVID. So it's still here anyway.
- 50:00The article from the Wall Street Journal actually was an op ed from former National
- 50:05Institutes of Health chief Francis Collins. He took part in a panel discussion on
- 50:08the way COVID was handled in this country, and specifically, it turns out,
- 50:13according to him, it could have been handled a heck of a lot
- 50:16different than it was. Mister Collins, and I'm paraphrasing here said basically,
- 50:21their reaction to COVID by our government officials, quote totally disrupted people's lives,
- 50:27ruined the economy, kept many kids, et cetera in a way that they've
- 50:30never recovered from. It was a mistake. This is mister Collins, imagine
- 50:37that he was part of all this, with doctor Fauci and others. And
- 50:42you know, I said this before, I don't necessarily blame I don't necessarily
- 50:46blame government officials. They were acting on the info that was given to them
- 50:51at the time. And it turns out, according to this guy who was
- 50:54pretty big right there along with Fauci, that it was an overreaction. And
- 50:59this was a guy that was the time the head of the National Institutes of
- 51:02Health. The up ed again over the weekend in the Wall Street Journal.
- 51:07Basically, what he's saying now is precaution should have been taken on the elderly
- 51:12and those with underlying health conditions, but for the rest of us, we
- 51:15should have continued with our normal lives. Now, doctor Fauci is asking mister
- 51:21Collins to stop with the rhetoric. What rhetoric actually is that doctor Fauci the
- 51:28truth. We are still trying to recover from the damage done by the lockdowns,
- 51:32and we will be for decades again, probably for the remaining thirty years
- 51:36or so that I have left on this earth. And again I'm saying this
- 51:38not as a COVID denier. I'm not. I lost people close to me
- 51:42because of COVID, including one of my best friends who passed at the age
- 51:45of fifty. I was vaccinated boosted, But as now others are seeing the
- 51:51total lockdowns, shutdowns, what we did to our school system, what we
- 51:54did to our businesses, and it was all pretty much shut down, and
- 52:00according to at least one guy who was pretty high up and was part of
- 52:02it, it was a mistake, as we are now learning. All Right,
- 52:07we gotta go. Ryan Nicholson, thank you so much. Also thank
- 52:10you to Greg Thomas for stopping by this morning and Jeff Jenkins from the newsroom
- 52:15as well. Final the News of the Day wv Metronews dot com at WCCHS
- 52:17Network dot com as well. Tomorrow coming up on the show, Delegate Kayla
- 52:22Young will be stopping by a week away from the session, and we'll get
- 52:25Delegate Kayla Young's thoughts on that. Also Rick Cavaner from the Canawan County Board
- 52:30of Education and Charleston Urban Works will be stopping by tomorrow as well. Thank
- 52:36you so much to our Texters guests and Ryan, I will see you tomorrow.
