- 2:17for easy talk shows. Now it means I won't have anything to throw on
- 2:22the floorboard in my truck at the mailbox again today. Now I've got to
- 2:24go back to actually putting together a show again, which I did today.
- 2:28We have now our Kanawa County Commission race set Democrat and former Secretary of State
- 2:31on one side. Of the others the former legislator and insurance executive Chris Walters
- 2:37Natalie Tennant Chris Walters both will be joining me on the show today. Plus
- 2:39we know who the sheriff is going to be since there was no one in
- 2:42the ticket on the Democrat side. It'll be Joe Crawford. He's going to
- 2:45join us a little bit later on. Brad Michael Henney will be stopping by

- 3:14Chris, good morning. How are you sing? I'd rather talk about the
- 3:16par mar Strawberry Donuts. That's Strawberry Shortcake Donuts. Yeah, well at the
- 3:22donuts spot that too, Yeah, yeah, we're good. At the Strawberry
- 3:25Festival, I have not I've never been there before. I've never had I've
- 3:30never been invited actually, so I go. Well, but it's and it's
- 3:36amazing, it really is what it goes on Mechannan. All right, so
- 3:38we have reversed chairs from twelve hours ago. I'm now in the host chair
- 3:43and you're in the co host chair. Thanks exactly, by the way,
- 3:46hats off to you and Carrie Hoodesek, who's who burned the midnight oil,
- 3:51the midday oil. All the oil is burned. Because you two have been
- 3:54here all night. You have not left. There's just enough left in the
- 3:57tank to finish off your show here and nothing. I'm going on to bed.
- 4:00I don't blame yet, I don't blame you, all right, So
- 4:01let's just start it off. I'm just going to count on the turn you
- 4:03loose, well, Lok, let's talk. Let's start. Lookily, the
- 4:06contested races in Incanah County in the courthouse were largely on the Republican side,
- 4:13as you have mentioned, Chris Walters defeated Dwayne Duncan and on the Democratic side,
- 4:16Natalie Tennant defeated Kent Carper, who, as we have documented, resigned
- 4:21last week. So and that was a fairly heavy handed win by Tenants.
- 4:26She went one going away there. In the prosecutor's race, which was another
- 4:30one that was much talked about, Debor Rosnick defeated Morgan Switzer by about sixteen
- 4:35hundred votes. So Rosnick advances to November and we'll take on John Mitchell in
- 4:42the general election. And I have to apologize to John because we were on
- 4:45the coverage last night and I was just I had so many numbers and names
- 4:48running through my head, and I was trying on the fly to remember his
- 4:51name, and I just could not get it out. So I apologized John
- 4:56because I could see his face when I was talking to Debora last night.
- 5:00I could see John's face. I knew who he was, and I knew
- 5:03he was going to be the Democrat, and I could not remember his name.
- 5:08And You're looking at me and offering no help. Well, because I
- 5:10didn't know what he what I was trying to say. Now, we spent
- 5:13a lot of time together, but we're not married. I can't complete your
- 5:15sentences. And Chris is looking at now. You and Kerry could probably do
- 5:17that, but you're looking at me, and I'm like Toasterick, I don't
- 5:24know what. I apologize to John Mitchell for forgetting his name on our coverage
- 5:28last night. It wasn't because I forgot who he was or that he was
- 5:30going to be the Democratic candidate for prosecutor. I just couldn't get the name
- 5:34out. Joe Crawford, as you mentioned, will be the sheriff. He
- 5:38defeated Sean Krozer last night. There was no Democrat in the race, so
- 5:41he will likely be your kana County Sheriff. Now the judicial races, there
- 5:45were a couple in Kanawa County that were contested for circuit judge. Of course,
- 5:48there's a new circuit judge in Kanaan County and that was a close race,
- 5:53probably the closest race of the night, as Richard Lindsay defeated Eric Cantrell
- 5:58ninety five votes. Was the separation there, So certainly they'll be looking at
- 6:02that one pretty closely when the canvass the ballots coming up in a few days.
- 6:06Judge Jennifer Bailey won re election defeating Ashley Deem. The vote totaled there
- 6:11nineteen three hundred and seventy for Bailey. Deem got eleven eight hundred and thirty
- 6:15six votes, so Judge Bailey re elected. There there was a family Court
- 6:24judge seat that was won by Kelly Pritt. She won rather handily over Leir
- 6:30van Meter fourteen six hundred votes to eleven thousand and thirty six for van Meter.
- 6:35There that was the difference in that one. There are three new magistrates
- 6:40in Kanaha County and those seats were claimed by Lisa Good, Todd Chevalier,
- 6:44and John Luoni. There were four other magistrate races that were contested and those
- 6:47winners included Leslie Grace, Mike Farrell, Casey Moore, and Gary Scheff.
- 6:53So that runs down the races in Kanawa County. In Putnam County there was
- 6:58the one circuit judge rage that was talked about. Phil Stowers defeated John Hoover
- 7:03seventy eight hundred eighty eight votes to thirty three hundred and twenty eight. Judge
- 7:06Stowers wins reelection. There there was one magistrate race that was contested in Putnham
- 7:12County and Sarah Weaver won there. For the school board, your winners were
- 7:15Chuck Hatfield and Christian Wells and both levees that were on the ballot, and
- 7:19Putnam County one handily and the Fire and Rescue levy as well as the school
- 7:24board levee both were approved. And I think you got Brad coming on,
- 7:29so you guys can thumbnail the statewide races and of course all of those numbers
- 7:34are at our website wv matronews dot com and there will be plenty on talk
- 7:39line with Hopey coming up in the next hour reaction and analysis. And also
- 7:44I'll throw this in here, a couple of our mayor's races that we had.
- 7:46Scott James has been He won his race in Saint Albans and he was
- 7:51reelected because that was the election. And then Scott Elliott and Dunbar won his
- 7:57race over one of the council when there's actually two other candidates, thinking that
- 8:00right, yeah, and he and then in Dunbar that was a primary.
- 8:03So he's now the Democrat nominee. But there were no Republicans running, So
- 8:07now I guess that means that he unless somebody could be appointed to that seat
- 8:11by the Republican party. So that's uh so Elliott wins in in Dunbar as
- 8:16well. All right, all right, Chris, I appreciate it, man,
- 8:18thanks a lot. All right, dude, to have yourself a great
- 8:20day. And it's too bad we're not on TV yet. We will be
- 8:24in the fall because you are rocking the man Hillbillies. I I wondered if
- 8:28anybody was gonna know that notice that you got to Mike Crosby, our good
- 8:33buddy down the baseball coach at Man would be very a listener to this show.
- 8:35By the way, the former American Psycho American Psycho in his pro wrestling
- 8:39days Yeah, he hooked you up with a man hill billy gear. So
- 8:41you're rocking the left. I mean, I'm Logan and that's okay. It
- 8:46still Logan County. So everywhere I go, I wear the the man Hillbilly's
- 8:50gear. I wore it to a baseball game in uh in Miami last year
- 8:56and uh so so so the Hillbillies were rocking at what is they called Tropic
- 9:00can of Fi. Yes, yes, indeed, Chris, go get some
- 9:03sleep, all right, buddy, Chris Lawrence again. He and Carrie been

- 9:31before we go to brad Tex says no, Mike Stewart is a G craig
- 9:35hot air. Blair is done. Robert It's okay to sexually assault your wife.
- 9:39Carnes is done. One of depressing parties. Morrissey is the GOP goublatorial
- 9:43candidate now, says a Texter textasyst Thank goodness, Mike Stewart lost, Tex
- 9:48says, looks say Mike Stewart will need to get a job since he can't
- 9:52live off taxes anymore. That's a real welfare system. Well, he's still
- 9:56a state senator, is mister Stewart. Biggest election news, says A text
- 10:01in my mind was Blair is going to get ousted, a get announced rather
- 10:05than the fifteenth Senatorial district going to need a new Senate president and all new
- 10:09committee appointments. Chaos coming to the state a second straight time, that we've
- 10:13lost a Senate president. Tex says Dave. I think a lot of Conservatives
- 10:18like me were tick that Mooney decided to run for Senate after all that trouble
- 10:22to win the House seat over David McKinley. His selfish ambition to go from
- 10:24a two year cycle to a six year one has now forced him to have
- 10:30to say goodbye to DC. To other conservative politicians, this needs to be
- 10:33a reminder to think before you act. Somebody who always thinks before and after
- 10:39he acts, as Brad mcilhanney's joined us right now. Brad, good morning,
- 10:41welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave, Happy post election morning.
- 10:46And indeed it is all right. So let's start with the with the
- 10:52race for the Senate governor Jim Justice. Will move on and we'll face Wheeling
- 10:58mayor Glen Elliot. Your thoughts. You know, the polling, not just
- 11:03the Metro News poll, but others consistently showed Justice way ahead. It was
- 11:09to the point that Congressman Mooney counted his own internal polling that showed him within
- 11:15twenty points. That was favorable considering other polls showed a forty point gap.
- 11:22So you know that that showed you the lay of the land. And the
- 11:24only question to me was how quickly the race would be called by Metro News.
- 11:31And you know, this was a national profile race, so how quickly
- 11:35it might be called. It was a lead story on ABC News last night,
- 11:37and it was a lead story ons you know, to Congersman Mooney's credit,
- 11:43I think it was it was not called as soon as the poles closed,
- 11:46but it was maybe forty five minutes later, maybe Poles closed seven thirty
- 11:50race was called probably eight fifteen. And Craig Blair is out. As textures
- 11:56have mentioned, Craig Blair is out, and and so now the face of
- 12:01the Senate is going to change. Well, I was bamboozled about that,
- 12:05and bamboozled the man said, I was bamboozled because you know, Senator Blair
- 12:13had a financial advantage. I think a name recognition advantage, which can cut
- 12:18both ways. You can, you know, if everybody knows who you are,
- 12:22you can be a lightning rod for criticism. He had two primary opponents,
- 12:28both running to his right on culture issues. Senator Blair is most enthusiastic
- 12:35about economic development in the state, and he believed that that was his,
- 12:39you know, a central part of his role, particularly in the lieutenant lieutenant
- 12:45governor spot that goes with being Senate president. But he was He faced competition
- 12:50from former Delegate Mike Folk and from Tom Willis, a lawyer, a businessman,
- 12:56a military veteran, and a veteran of the twenty eighteen West Virginia US
- 13:05Senate Republican race. That one also included you probably remember Patrick Morris, Evan
- 13:13Jenkins, Don Blankenship and Tom Willis kind of came out of nowhere, and
- 13:18you know, it wasn't really among the top three finishers, but created an
- 13:22impression by being someone you hadn't heard of, and he thought, who's this
- 13:26guy. He's coming off pretty well, and he was great. Tom Willris
- 13:31was great on the Jeffersons. By the way, yes, that is a
- 13:33good point and it is now carried over and he has defeated Senator Blair.
- 13:41He Tom Willis was interviewed by one of our metro news stations, w EPM
- 13:46in Martinsburg, and to my ears, sounded about as surprised as anyone.
- 13:52Let me Blair is you know, he's he's out, and now that that
- 13:56is going to certainly change the power structure in the State Center. And you
- 13:58know, I don't want to put words in his mouth. And I'm sure
- 14:01that Senate President Blair will be on with Hopy maybe on this show at some
- 14:05point. But I kind of got the ouda in talking to some people that
- 14:07Blair may have just been over Charleston altogether, be honest with you, because
- 14:11he was. He was kind of frustrated, especially with the far right wing
- 14:15of the party. Before we let you go, because I knew you got
- 14:18a lot to do, and I want to get some local races. I
- 14:18get some candidates in studio. Here the Board of Public Works mentioned earlier,
- 14:24McCuskey beats Mike Stewart. Chris Warner takes over for his brother Mac as the
- 14:28new Secretary of State. Mark Hunt is the new State Auditor. Cant Leonhardt
- 14:33will be I guess when they have the Board of Public Works meeting, he's
- 14:35going to be the one knows where the paper towels are because he's the only
- 14:39one that's sticking around. He was re elected as ag Commissioner, at least
- 14:41I should say he was that he won the Republican primary. And also Larry
- 14:48Pack did not have opposition his pursuit of the State Treasurer's office. So a
- 14:52whole lot of new faces there, Brad, And we'll let you go after
- 14:54that. But go ahead, man. Well, you know, McCuskey,
- 14:56as somebody know, people know from his two terms as state auditor, he's
- 15:01switching roles or could could switch roles if he wins the general election. And
- 15:09uh, you know, I just think that that name recognition and the track
- 15:11record probably helped him the race Chris Warner potentially will be would be taking over
- 15:20the role that his brother has held for the last two terms. Uh So
- 15:24people people may think, oh Warner is in the Secretary of State office,
- 15:28that it could be a different one. Uh And then you know, no
- 15:33surprise that Kent Lee and Hart successfully defended his seat. Mark Hunt a little
- 15:37bit of a surprise to me because Hunt has a long track record in wes
- 15:41Virgini legislative politics as a Democrat. But a lot of people, including the
- 15:46voters, have changed parties in recent years, so maybe that's not that surprising.
- 15:52Hunt had a Canaw Valley stronghold. Some of his opponents, including House
- 15:58Majority Leader Eric Householder, more of a base of operations in the Eastern pain
- 16:03Handle. Uh. The one of the Jackson County Commissioners, Trician Jackson right
- 16:10was was also in that race, So potentially splitting the Eastern pain Handle vote
- 16:15and clearly Mark Hunt, former Democrat, current state center. What's the beneficiary?
- 16:19All right? Well, speaking of uh, I do want to throw
- 16:23this out there, we have to give props to our boss. Uh here
- 16:26at the radio ranch, Joe Parsons. Happy Joe, as most people don't
- 16:32him out of Jackson County. Joe uh won the nomination and uh, and
- 16:37we'll be serving it looks like because I don't think there's anyone. Maybe there
- 16:38is some on the primary. I'm not sure, but he did win the
- 16:41nomination out of that uh uh that place in the Jackson County, out of
- 16:45that that district there, So I guess, uh we we refer to him
- 16:48when I passed him in the hall as as uh. At least for now
- 16:52we could say possibly Delegate Joe Parsons. Oh man, how do we treat
- 16:56him? Congratulations to him, the great guy. Uh, don't blame the
- 17:00voters for all right. All right, now you're gonna be on I know
- 17:04with a hobby coming up at ten oh six, so we'll let you go.
- 17:07I appreciate more focus on the Senate in Congress and probably have a few
- 17:11of the candidates onday. I know he was trying to see if we could
- 17:12get the governor on there. So we'll be listening to teno sex Man,
- 17:17Thanks a lot, Thank you, Brad mglhney. Text says Tom Willis did

- 21:30Now, Chris, good morning, congratulations, welcome to the show.
- 21:33Thanks Dave, Good morning to you, sir. It was a good race
- 21:36and an the end you pulled it out. That's right. Yeah, absolutely,
- 21:38I'm really thankful for the voters that they put their confidence in me to
- 21:42move forward to try and represent Kennwall County. Also want to thank my family,
- 21:47my wife for standing by me. I mean, anybody that puts their
- 21:49name on the ballot, they're opening themselves to scrutiny, to negative ads,
- 21:53as everyone's seen. And you know that doesn't just affect the candidate, fects
- 21:56families as well, and so you know, having that support at home is
- 22:00just absolutely amazing and invaluable to me. The entire family runs. Yes,
- 22:06in the world we live in now, in the world of politics, Chris,
- 22:07the entire family is on the ballot, you know, and it's it's
- 22:11I don't I don't like it necessarily, but it is what it is.
- 22:15You know. It was a great teaching moment for my kids too. I
- 22:17had to explain to my son in kind of sports terms that this was a
- 22:19semi final and that we head to the final instead of using primary in general,
- 22:23so he could really click on to what's going on as someone who's served

- 22:33experiences you've had and how you think those will help you if you're elected to
- 22:38the county commission. Chris, Yeah, absolutely, My experience is invaluable whenever
- 22:42it comes to coming in and replacing someone who'd been on the County Commissioner commission
- 22:47for twenty eight years. You know, I was Vice Chair of Finance in
- 22:49the Senate, oversaw the finances of the whole state of West Virginia, so
- 22:53coming into the county, being able to comb through the budget find ways we
- 22:57can save money and return that money to the taxpayers. You know, we
- 23:00really have to have the onus that this is not our money, this is
- 23:04the taxpayer money. Times are extremely tough right now. It is tough to
- 23:08make your weekly grocery bills, utility rates, everything, and we need to
- 23:14return as much money to the taxpayer as we can to help them as we
- 23:17all weather this storm together. It's an interesting time, Chris in Kanawha County
- 23:22because on one hand, you've got so many great things that are happening here,
- 23:26and I think this is true of West Virginia in general. Putting on
- 23:29more broad terms, you have so many great things that are happening. You
- 23:33know, job announcements coming, I'm talking talking about statewide. You have people
- 23:37moving into certain areas, moving out of other areas. So it's kind of
- 23:40an interesting contrast between the good and the bad. Let's start with the good.
- 23:44What's some good things going on in Kanawha County right now that you want
- 23:47to that you want to be a part of. You know, the County
- 23:48Commission has been involved in like the Shawnee Sports Complex. I think bringing that
- 23:52travel type of sports to Kanall County has been fantastic. It's brought more people
- 23:56here to see the county that we all love. You know, we live
- 24:00here for a reason. We think it's wonderful. We're in our bubble of
- 24:03how great Kanaal County is, and I want to continue to spread that message
- 24:07to tons of people by having them come here. You know, as a
- 24:11candidate, I haven't been using buzzwords of let's just build a strong economy.
- 24:15I've actually put plans forth to doing so. I think that's really important.
- 24:19You know, Kanall County has so much potential. We are the capital city
- 24:22of a state. We have a beautiful area, we have a great river,
- 24:26and we just don't utilize it enough. There's a lot that we can
- 24:30do more to improve Kanall County and I hope to do that, and with
- 24:33your help, I want to hear your ideas of what you think we can
- 24:36do, because I don't have all the ideas. I've got a lot of
- 24:38great plans for Kanall County, but I really want to hear from everyone out
- 24:41there that's what you all think we could do to do better. And one
- 24:45of the things I hear a lot on this show from guests and sometimes from
- 24:48callers and Texas Chris Is. People say that they think there's a division in
- 24:52Kanawha County. Again, not unlike a lot of other counties. You know,
- 24:55they think that maybe what's going on, that what's going on in the
- 24:59Upper Kanal Valley couldn't be any more different than what's going on in downtown Charleston
- 25:03or what's going on in Tornado or in St. Albans or whatever. Speak
- 25:06to that, Yeah, absolutely, I mean, we we can't forget about
- 25:08different areas of the county. And also when it comes to the division,
- 25:11you know, I'm used to bringing people together. You know, a lot
- 25:15of people don't know this about me, but my wife's a Democrat, I'm
- 25:18a Republican. We have two bipartisan babies, you know, I am.
- 25:21I'm used to working with everybody. I love. Have a dog. What's
- 25:25the dog? I got four dogs? Okay, we actually uh we got
- 25:27a mountain party one of the dogs. Oh man, they're they're just wonderful
- 25:32things. I love animals. What's one of my biggest passions actually is helping
- 25:36animals. We adopt, we we we do what we can to give back
- 25:40to those you know, to them, they're they're amazing to us. And
- 25:44you know, the eastern part of Kanaal County is extremely important, just like
- 25:47the western part, and just like Charleston, Clinton and all over, and
- 25:52I have plans for each region. You know, we can't just focus on
- 25:55building Charleston and hoping the rest does well. We need to focus on building
- 25:59Kanal County as a whole. We also need to focus on sharing things together.
- 26:03If you look at the cities, you know, Dunbar's doing really great
- 26:06on tearing down homes and they have the equipment to do that, whereas Clinton
- 26:10and they do great on doing it too, but they may not have certain
- 26:12pieces of equipment that Dunbar has, and Dumbar's not using those equipment every day.
- 26:17So we really need to figure out what equipment all these cities has,
- 26:21work together as a county, share resources to make the whole county better.
- 26:26So, Chris, before the campaign really gets going, you have time to
- 26:29exhale a little bit anything you want to say to the voters Canowa County who
- 26:33have put you in this position to possibly be the next county commission. You've
- 26:37still got a race to get through, but at this point, yeah,
- 26:40you know, again, thank you for putting your support and confidence in me
- 26:44as I move forward in this race. I am not going to go negative.
- 26:47You're not going to see a negative ad paid for by Chris Walters.
- 26:51In fact, Dave, we joked about this that my campaign commercial during the
- 26:55primary started with warning the following is a positive campaign commercial, because that's what
- 27:00I'm trying to do. We don't need to tear each other down. You
- 27:03know, my opponent, the General, Natalie, she's intelligent, she's articulate.
- 27:06Her and I get along. Well, I'm not going to try to
- 27:08tear her down or sling mud at her. You know, I hope that
- 27:11the voters hear my plans, my ideas, hear her plans, her ideas,
- 27:15and pick who they think would do best for the Well, she's in
- 27:17the green room, so you know, you can start by the baby going
- 27:18run up to the soda machine to buy find her soda or back of chips
- 27:22or something. You know, we saw each other so much during the campaign
- 27:25trail that we literally joked about we should ride together to Avent Stave. So
- 27:29you know, again, I try to get along with everybody, and I
- 27:30want to bring that passion, that energy, and that excitement to the County
- 27:34Commission. I think I can do a lot to help our county, help
- 27:37any divisions that there are in this county, and to move us forward.
- 27:41Chris Walter's the Republican nominee for County Commission. Congratulations on your victory last night,

- 32:14Now I wants to be commissioner, to close libraries and allow the state to
- 32:15take control of our local government. Check why he got voted out on the
- 32:20state level. Final Texas Day. The first thing out of Chris Walter's mouth
- 32:24was the Republican mantra of cut taxes. But wait, the next five things
- 32:28he talked about. We're good ways to spend county money. I may be
- 32:30naive, but if a county has less money, how do you spend more?
- 32:34Just a thought? Former secretary of State, former mountaineer, former television
- 32:37personality, and a whole lot more. Well, now she's going to add
- 32:39Democratic nominee for county commission to her resume. Natalie Tenant is here. Good
- 32:44morning and congratulations, welcome to the show. Good morning, Thank you.
- 32:47I'm sure I'll get text about me next. That's cool. I'm fired up
- 32:52about it. I was with the territory comes with the interesting race, for
- 32:54sure. You know you now you were running your opposition on the credit ticket
- 33:00was longtime county commissioner Kink Carper. You were out just running your campaign.
- 33:05Then late Friday comes worthy, mister Carper would would resign, but he's still
- 33:08on the ballot. It definitely looked to me like the voters of kanaw Canny
- 33:13realized he wasn't going to serve, because I don't know if he did,
- 33:17you know, I don't exactly. I guess I thought maybe that he would
- 33:22get more votes. It's not a knock against you, don't get me wrong,
- 33:23but I was thinking because he's been there for so long or whatever,
- 33:27But you got a heck of a lot of votes and you won the thing,
- 33:30which is not surprising. But I think the number of votes surprised a
- 33:34lot of people just because that a loyalty to Carper, I think, right,
- 33:36And that was my concern in going into this race also. But as
- 33:40I told you earlier, you know, there were just people who were saying,
- 33:44please run, please consider it, So they were feeling something before I
- 33:49even realized that all this seat was going to be open. But this is
- 33:52why you campaign also, and this is why you go out and ask for
- 33:58votes. In asking for votes, you should be listening. So I was
- 34:01listening, and I could tell by the vibe from the people, and it
- 34:07truly was when I would say I'm running for county commission. Oh great,
- 34:09it's time for a change. And then I might say who my opponent is
- 34:13and then they were like, oh, you definitely have my vote. So
- 34:15I felt it early on, and I just kept chess, kept going and
- 34:20going, and you know, listening to people, there are so many there.
- 34:25You talked about good and bad things with Chris. There are so many
- 34:29good and bad things. You just one of your last sponsorship was about clean
- 34:34air on the inside of your house. But you know, people are coming
- 34:37to West Virginia because and there's the term I didn't know un till I was
- 34:43listening to someone and they told me called climate refugees, and they're looking for
- 34:46places. And her friend came to Sissonville because it had the best rated air.
- 34:52So that's a positive for Kanawha County. And you just just look around.
- 34:58Yeah, we're getting a lot of rain, everything green. But we
- 35:00can also we can also I don't like the word take advantage of it,
- 35:04but we can make it so much more valuable about what we have to offer
- 35:09and get people outside dag on ninety percent of the time we're inside. I'm
- 35:14a farm girl and a gen X, so we were never inside. No,
- 35:17you're I was having that conversation with somebody the other day. It was
- 35:21a pretty day on Sunday. I even told my wife and said, this
- 35:22is the kind of day when I was a kid, I would have been
- 35:25on my bike at seven o'clock in the morning and gone, maybe come home
- 35:28when the street lights go out. Maybe I want to say one more thing
- 35:30about the rate that this race then will move on. You've been involved in
- 35:34other campaigns, but this one was a little bit different because even had Commissioner
- 35:37Carper, even if he didn't had not resigned on Friday, there was still
- 35:42that cloud of controversy over his head. But to my knowledge and to your
- 35:46credit, all, I mean, we all knew this. This story broke
- 35:50last May about the controversy with to my dogge today Tom? Was it today?
- 35:54Okay? And it was last May. To my knowledge, you did
- 35:58not focus on at all. You could have, you could have, but
- 36:02you chose to. I mean, well, that's that I was trying to
- 36:06get a sense of it, a sense of how the race would go.
- 36:08And I know I didn't. I didn't do that. I respect his family
- 36:14too much. You have to respect the position too, and that's that's just
- 36:20the way that I felt about it, that we didn't need to do this.
- 36:23There were enough questions people brought it up to me, like I didn't
- 36:27have to say anything. Then there was a time I was up and quick
- 36:31and in this old ninety year old Navy vet says, you know, tell
- 36:35me about this, and I said, I don't really know. And then
- 36:37I was like, well, it's my job to be able to tell people
- 36:40what's going on? Should I be asking? And then I still didn't.
- 36:45I still just wanted to take the high road. That's that's your guys' job,
- 36:49is the well the meaning, And I think you're to be commended for
- 36:51that. I really do. I mean this this campaign and this is just
- 36:55editorializing on my part, and I'm not talking about cant commission, talk about
- 36:58in general. A lot of what we saw, especially out of the governor's
- 37:00race, just disgusted me. And and I'm any advertising business and we're not
- 37:05going to turn down money. But if you can't do any better than that,
- 37:08I just I don't know. It was disgusting. No, I mean,
- 37:10that's just me though. Yeah, I mean, and that's you know,
- 37:13and that'll be an interesting race. Then with Steve Williams, and I
- 37:15wish Steve willis. You know, he's not running it. He didn't have
- 37:19an opponent in the Democrat primary. But he's a statesman and he should have
- 37:23shown that right away because people are going to forget about all those nasty commercials,
- 37:28you know, come come the fall and Steve Williams can show what a
- 37:31what a statesman he is or could have during that. But that's you want.
- 37:37You want to be able to tell what you're going to do or just
- 37:40give me plans and not say generalizations. I'm gonna make it better. Yeah,
- 37:46Dave Allan chilling five Any Life is brought to you partly by Husband's Pizza.
- 37:49This month as your favorite Hustands, get a large at Nitch Pepperoni Pizza
- 37:52and an order of cinnam ad bites with icing only twenty ninety nine at your
- 37:55favorite Hustans. Let's talk about your campaign now, Like I told Chris Walters,
- 38:00exhale and now maybe take a couple of days, but then you're going
- 38:02to be back at it this summer and be taking on Chris Walters, former
- 38:07legislator, insurance executive. He was on the show prior to you. I
- 38:12know you were listening to talk about that match up with Chris Walters. Yeah,
- 38:14I mean, for me, we just talked about this primary. That's
- 38:17why I can't. I don't feel like I can exhale because I have to
- 38:22go back. And I mean there were a lot of people who said,
- 38:25I'm with you, I want you to win. I can't help you right
- 38:28now until after the primary. Well they're gonna get calls from Natalie and say
- 38:32it's after the primary. I need your help now. And so what Chris
- 38:36and I will do is continue to be positive and come up and show everyone
- 38:44what our ideas are. I mean, that's the I'm writing this down because
- 38:47both of you said that. So that's for the record. Let that show
- 38:51on May fifteenth and on my show. But both Chris Walters and Natalie Tennant
- 38:54said they were going to run a clean race. What happens, and you
- 38:59know this, unfortunately what happens to us, other people get involved, and
- 39:02sometimes you know that can happen. But but well, I hope it says
- 39:07that way. I really don't. Yeah, I mean, I'm gonna come
- 39:08up like there are specifics you asked this question about, you know, different
- 39:14parts of the county and you're exactly right. I saw you out in Saint
- 39:17Albans and a couple times people in Saint Aubans be like, don't forget about
- 39:22us. Kenawa County doesn't end in Charleston, don't forget about Saint Albans.
- 39:24And I'm like, I'm here, I don't forget about it. My daughter's
- 39:28first performance was at the Alburn Theater in twenty ten. You don't tell me,
- 39:34you know, as a theater mom, just like a sports mom,
- 39:36you don't know where every little store is something you got to pick up.
- 39:38So I know all the little places in Saint Albans now and even beyond.
- 39:43But here's an example, like Nitro is starting the community is starting an appy
- 39:47area with beekeepers. They're painting all of these bee boxes. So here is
- 39:52a little community project that they're starting. And I'm like, you, guys,
- 39:55you can start having you can start selling this high. Nitro is the
- 40:00place to be. And then I know about what's taking place in the eastern
- 40:05part of the county. Heck, you might be able to sell some of
- 40:07that honey to some of the businesses that will be coming when the recreation plan
- 40:12is in place and there's all these stores put up when we get from Marmett
- 40:15to golly Bridge. So that's that's what I that's this is the specifics that
- 40:21I have in listening to what everyone says. It's been a pleasure to have
- 40:24you on the show. And I'm going to kind of leave it with you
- 40:28to just say, give you an opportunity to thank people, thank the voters,
- 40:31your family, go ahead and throw them in there and talk about your
- 40:34vision. And you've talked about it a lot, but go ahead and moving
- 40:37forward, and we'll be having you on of course several times during the summer
- 40:38and end of the fall, but go ahead and yeah, time as you
- 40:42and we have a lot going on. We still have an open seat in
- 40:44the County Commission. That's a good yeah, Dave, you needed to ask
- 40:47me that there is that there is that. Once a reporter, always a
- 40:52reporter. So so what's going to happen with this with this open seat is
- 40:55now, first of all, and you know you know this former Secretary of
- 40:59State, you gotta wait for elections to be certified right on the twentieth of
- 41:01May in the morning. So so then the Democratic or I guess the Executive
- 41:07Committee will weigh in on what they county christof it's the county commission for first.
- 41:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's they. They may ask for applications,
- 41:19do an interview, and then those true. Yeah, that comes first,
- 41:22and if they can't decide on someone, then there's a new piece of
- 41:25legislation. And we're all like when did this come into play? That the
- 41:30county the executive committee of the party of the person left so it's a Democrat,
- 41:34will choose three names, and then Commissioner Selango gets to mark one off,
- 41:39Wheeler gets to mark one off, and the person left is the person
- 41:43last person standing. Exactly exactly would you like to be if I'm going to
- 41:46apply? Like what, yes, I mean, I want to be County
- 41:51commissioner today. Let's get at it. Let's let's get started. I have
- 41:54ten miles up in dutch Ridge that needs water lines. They are living out
- 42:00of a cistern and if it doesn't rain, they don't have water. And
- 42:02if they don't have water, they got to go get their truck in all
- 42:06these big tanks. Doesn't that sound like a third world country? That's in
- 42:08Kanawa County our stay in twenty twenty four exactly, So that's why I want
- 42:13to be Kanah County commissioner today. So yes, I'm going to apply for
- 42:16it and see how it goes. And I think, you know, the
- 42:21twentieth they can announce it because they'll be in session. Then they'll have another
- 42:24meeting to accept the folks. And I said this on their coverage last night,
- 42:30Natalie, that one or two things could happen. They could decide to
- 42:32go that route, or they could talk. And this has happened before they
- 42:35get somebody who basically is a placeholder, you know, somebody who just comes
- 42:37in and says, Okay, I'm not gonna run, I'm not interested.
- 42:39I'm just I'm just fulfilling my civic duty by servant County commission it. You
- 42:44know what, and they can, you know, their chest can boltst out.
- 42:46We did a placeholder. Well that's not good because what about the people.
- 42:52Do they want a placeholder or do they want someone that they've already voted
- 42:57on that though I've already said we're going to lift her up to see if
- 43:00she can win the general election. And we do it all the time.
- 43:05You talked about more Capito. He resigned. They filled it with jb Acres,
- 43:09and JB became the incumbent, same with Doug Scapin. Republicans and Democrats
- 43:14both do it. So so don't give me placeholder motion. Give me let's
- 43:19get it together and get to work. All right, we'll leave it there.
- 43:22I appreciate you being here. I didn't get to say that and started
- 43:25off, but thank you, thank you, and thank you. Family took.
- 43:30Yes. You know, we're in a unique situation because my husband's serving
- 43:34on active duty right now, so he can't do a whole lot. And
- 43:37my daughter is an aspiring journalist who's an independent and she can't do a whole
- 43:42lot. But she saw the process last night and loves it and fascinated pictures,
- 43:45a big, big picture of the two. Have you in the paper
- 43:46today? Oh is it? Yeah? Well good, we're gonna we're gonna
- 43:50like that too. But you know, she's been in this since he was
- 43:52eighteen months old, but now it's like clicking in and this poor child just
- 43:57thought she was going to a reception to getting bunch of stuff to eat,
- 43:59and is more to it than that? All right, Natalie, wish you
- 44:01the best of luck. We'll talk against some things a lot, the impact

- 46:57note from the world of politics. A long time replace we can legislature out
- 47:00of run counties passed away. Bob Ashley served the legislature for thirty two years
- 47:06and he's passed away at the age of seventy. And he was definitely a
- 47:08great public servant. Bob Ashley dead at the age of seventy Hoppy, we'll
- 47:13have more on that coming up as part of the talk line. At ten
- 47:15six this morning, Tex says, neither candidate mentioned the Upper Canall Valley.
- 47:22That's Upper Canall Valley. Well, they did the abbreviation. There a third
- 47:25world area from a government to Campbell's Creek at both sides of the river,
- 47:28same as has been for seventy five years, says a text. Let me
- 47:32bring in now the presumptive nominae for sheriff as there's no candidate field on the
- 47:37Democratic side. Current Chief Deputy Joe Crawford. Joe, good morning, Welcome
- 47:40to the show. Dave, thank you so much for having me. Appreciate
- 47:43you talk about the race. Hey, we started his journey back in June.
- 47:46It was a great race. We were in a good campaign. More
- 47:50proud of what we did, and you know, at the end of the
- 47:52day, the hard work paid off. We're very blessed and fortunate, and
- 47:57you know, we had a great team. We I think we did it
- 48:00kind of the old fashioned way, getting out and talking to people, uh
- 48:04and winning, winning and winning votes. Over we'll talk about working for the
- 48:08current sheriff, Mike Rutherford. He is now term limited out and he'll be
- 48:13going off in the I don't see he's gone off in the pasture because he
- 48:15could still with me. But uh but uh, but but he's certainly earned
- 48:19it. Uh. So talk about your time working for for sheriff brother.
- 48:22It's been it's been a joint of pleasure. You know, he and I
- 48:24were friends before he asked me to come on as his chief deputy. And
- 48:29we've known each other for thirty some years. And a lot of people don't
- 48:31know this, but he started his career out at Saint Auban's PD. Uh
- 48:35where you know where I was. So I lived in Saint Aubans, so
- 48:38we knew each other. But Dave, you don't get elected four terms as
- 48:43a sheriff here in Kanall County and not be doing things right. Uh.
- 48:46They've they've set the Sheriff's Apartment up for success. I want to continue that
- 48:51success. You know, the equipment, the specialized units, the training,
- 48:54the technology. Uh, you know, sky's a limit. But and I
- 48:59will take take my hat off to the County Commission. They know it's a
- 49:01team effort, I think in county government or city government, but it's working
- 49:07together to accomplish things. You get people moving in the same direction, with
- 49:10the same goals, same vision moving forward. And the County Commission has been
- 49:15very good to the Sheriff's office. You know, recruiting and retention. We
- 49:19talked about that earlier when we were on here previously. It's an issue facing
- 49:24not only here in Kanaw County in state of West Virginia, but it's across
- 49:28the nation. But we were very fortunate the first year and a half I
- 49:31was there to gain a fourteen percent pay increase for our deputies and that helped
- 49:36us not lose people to other agencies such as the state police or federal agencies.
- 49:42So I think that was a key part of us. And then you
- 49:44look at the projects that we're right in the middle of now, the body
- 49:46camera body one camera project, the in car cameras, and the radio upgrade
- 49:53for all public safety, police, fire and the MS. So we want
- 49:59to contend that's the things we want to continue moving the county forward and make
- 50:02sure our citizens are well protected in our employees or well taken care of and
- 50:07have what they need to do their jobs. But Dave Island showing five any
- 50:09life is brought to you apart by Morgan then Morgan with more than twenty billion
- 50:14dollars recovered. They believe when you're injured, you deserve more. Morgan and
- 50:16Morgan in America's largest injury law firm. What did you hear out on the
- 50:19campaign trail? I had you on just a couple of weeks ago, kind
- 50:22of a meet the Candidate's type segment. You told me some of the things,
- 50:23but as you were traveling, I know you were out knocking on a
- 50:27whole lot of doors and things of that nature. What did you What did
- 50:30you hear out on the campaign trail? I think the one thing that resonated
- 50:31they appreciated how we did our campaign. You know, we kept it based,
- 50:36I think, focused on the issues. I think a lot of people
- 50:37didn't want to hear a lot of the rhetoric, so to speak, and
- 50:42that's that's what I focused on. I focused on you know, where been,
- 50:45what I've done, some people get to know me, but to where
- 50:47we're going in the future and what I see as far as the future here
- 50:52at the Sheriff's Office, and we tried to maintain that throughout the campaign.
- 50:57I think it was very successful. I think that was the right right way
- 51:00to go. So the next couple of months, in the next several months,
- 51:04you know, you're going to continue to service the chief deputy here in
- 51:06Kanah County, and not that you need any more on the job training,
- 51:09but it's an opportunity for more on the job training. I guess right,
- 51:13yeah, absolutely. I mean I've learned a lot of these first three years,
- 51:16and we've been busy. I mean, you look at some of the
- 51:19major credit coincidents we've had here recently. But it just goes to show how
- 51:24resent our people are. You know, our best resources are our employees are
- 51:32the people go out every day and do the job. And it's our job,
- 51:36I think, as leaders, to make sure we give them the tools,
- 51:39the training, and the technology to do their job better, safer,
- 51:44and deliver quality service to the sistans, Kennall County and We're very proud of
- 51:49that. I'm proud of our people. I'm gonna give you the final thirty
- 51:51seconds to thank whoever you need to think, family, friends, co workers,
- 51:53What do you got? Dave, thank you so much. I couldn't
- 51:57have done this without my family, you know. Yeah, yesterday I told
- 52:00you this last night. I think yesterday it was my twenty fifth wedding anniversary.
- 52:04Yes, it was hag A way to spend my anniversary. My wife
- 52:07of twenty five years, Kathy, She's just been great. And the family
- 52:12support and the support of all the citizens. You know, I think I
- 52:15could go on over and over again about all the support, but so thankful
- 52:19for all the people that voted and the people just thank you for getting out
- 52:22and voting and selecting me in. I promise I won't let you down.
- 52:25All right, Joe, I appreciate you being here to Dave allan show brought
