- 0:00Speaker 1: Jim Dunaway, Lance Taylor, Ryan Brown, live. The next round
- 0:07Speaker 1: is on now. Live show now.
- 0:13Speaker 2: It's the next round presented by Hard Rock Bets right
- 0:15Speaker 2: here on Sporting State. Jim Dunaway along with Lance Taylor,
- 0:19Speaker 2: Ryan Brown, Tyler Brooks and Forrester behind the big glass
- 0:22Speaker 2: today as we get rolling. We'll try to make it
- 0:25Speaker 2: through two hours without talking about NFL players coming back
- 0:28Speaker 2: and more rulings, but Just so you know, the Big
- 0:31Speaker 2: 12 has followed suit. The ACC is expected to follow suit.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And the College Football Playoff Committee is actually going to
- 0:38Speaker 2: say that if you roster a pro player, you can't
- 0:41Speaker 2: participate in the playoffs. So that should cover a lot
- 0:43Speaker 2: of bases there. We won't jump into that today. We
- 0:46Speaker 2: will get into some LSU jersey numbers. That is a
- 0:50Speaker 2: sign of the times down at LSU. One guy got
- 0:53Speaker 2: that jersey probably because he got his feelings hurt over
- 0:56Speaker 2: the last week. And another guy got his jersey because
- 0:58Speaker 2: he's dating the coach's head coach. head coach's daughter.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Are they still together?
- 1:03Speaker 3: Is that still a thing?
- 1:05Speaker 1: I'm surprised that there's not more.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Just because Lane Kiffin is such a unique brand that
- 1:12Speaker 4: that there's not more of that out there. Like you
- 1:14Speaker 4: see Libby Dunn and Paul Skeens all over the place.
- 1:17Speaker 4: You would think that you would see more of that.
- 1:18Speaker 2: It seems like a real relationship, Skeens and Dunn, right?
- 1:22Speaker 1: It does.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I know you were hesitant on Kelsey and Swift all
- 1:25Speaker 2: those years.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Still don't know about that one. They are married. There's
- 1:29Speaker 1: a lot of people that are married.
- 1:30Speaker 2: They're going to the wall for this one. At LSU,
- 1:37Speaker 2: they give out the jersey number seven every year. an
- 1:41Speaker 2: offensive and defensive player who are considered to be the
- 1:43Speaker 2: best playmakers. Now, one of them is Whit Weeks, who
- 1:47Speaker 2: dates Landry Kiffin. He got the number seven yesterday. And
- 1:53Speaker 2: so did tight end Tredez Green. He got the number
- 1:57Speaker 2: seven yesterday. If the best playmaker on offense was your
- 2:01Speaker 2: tight end, why have you been doing all this other
- 2:03Speaker 2: crap this whole time? That's a great point. He's good
- 2:05Speaker 2: enough to wear jersey number seven. Why are we even
- 2:07Speaker 2: doing this?
- 2:08Speaker 1: Which is as big an honor as you can give
- 2:09Speaker 1: to a current LSU player to wear the jersey number seven.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I mean, they hold that in reverence. And you are
- 2:15Speaker 1: out trying to shop for a guy from the NFL
- 2:17Speaker 1: at that same spot.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Yeah, it's almost just like it's a flag. This is
- 2:20Speaker 4: how much talent we have. He's putting more and more
- 2:22Speaker 4: pressure on himself, by the way.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and it has to be. reaching the boiling point
- 2:27Speaker 2: of chemistry inside that locker.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Room, too. Yeah, got to be. Got to be. And
- 2:31Speaker 1: that's one thing that we'll never know.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Until you get out there and there's some extreme insiders
- 2:36Speaker 4: that might know how that locker room is right now
- 2:39Speaker 4: and who likes who and who dislikes who.
- 2:41Speaker 1: But those are things that you just never know rolling
- 2:43Speaker 1: into the season.
- 2:45Speaker 2: So that's what they did yesterday at LSU. So that's
- 2:48Speaker 2: about as much as we're going to talk about the
- 2:50Speaker 2: NFL back-to-college scheme today unless we get some breaking news.
- 2:55Speaker 2: something bigger than the ACC just being the last one
- 2:58Speaker 2: to hook their train to this let's ban the pro
- 3:00Speaker 2: guys coming to college.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I want to start off, though, with the actual games.
- 3:03Speaker 2: We are two days away now on our countdown from
- 3:07Speaker 2: college football actually being played on the field. And I
- 3:10Speaker 2: mentioned this yesterday, and I want to bring the graphic
- 3:12Speaker 2: up here, but Bud Elliott, he literally called this the
- 3:16Speaker 2: sit your ass on the couch Saturdays, five of them.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And first of all, that's a great sign. We've got
- 3:23Speaker 2: five days.
- 3:24Speaker 1: This day and age. Five of them. Sadly, most of
- 3:27Speaker 1: them are not going to be in the first three weeks. Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 2: But here's the best college football weekends of 2026 from
- 3:35Speaker 2: Bud Elliott College Football there, ranked by the number of
- 3:39Speaker 2: prime games. And we all would say November 7th is
- 3:43Speaker 2: number one. That's a historic day of college football. And
- 3:47Speaker 2: for those that may be on the audio platforms, I'll
- 3:49Speaker 2: give you these games quickly. Oregon at Ohio State, Miami
- 3:53Speaker 2: at Notre Dame. I mean, just stop there and it's
- 3:56Speaker 2: a great Saturday. Alabama, LSU, BYU, Utah, Georgia at Ole Miss,
- 4:03Speaker 2: Penn State at Washington, maybe with playoff implications, Oklahoma at Florida,
- 4:09Speaker 2: and James Franklin, Virginia Tech at probably playoff contender SMU.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And that is a great Saturday of college football.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I don't know why we included that last one, but hey, whatever.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Looks like you.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Needed to bounce the graphic.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, he wanted to get a day games. If Franklin
- 4:24Speaker 1: gets a go in at Virginia Tech, I mean, an
- 4:27Speaker 1: upset of SMU. Manageable schedule.
- 4:30Speaker 4: I don't know what it's going to look like with
- 4:31Speaker 4: the transfers coming in for the Hokies, but. You know,
- 4:33Speaker 4: they could be surprisingly good in what seems to be
- 4:36Speaker 4: kind of a weak, balanced ACC right now.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but boy, that first column right there, though.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I mean, Auburn is bringing South Florida players to Auburn.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I mean, if you're bringing Penn State players to Virginia Tech,
- 4:47Speaker 2: it's almost like.
- 4:47Speaker 1: It's probably an upgrade, right? It's like they're, you know.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I mean, South Florida, I'm not saying Auburn's not going
- 4:51Speaker 2: to be good.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I just.
- 4:54Speaker 2: It seems like going from Penn State to Virginia Tech,
- 4:56Speaker 2: I may have improved the roster there a little bit. Okay,
- 4:59Speaker 2: none of these are week one, by the way, but
- 5:01Speaker 2: September 26th, So we get to this one pretty early.
- 5:05Speaker 2: It's the second best weekend. Oklahoma at Georgia. Oregon at USC.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Texas A & M at LSU. That would be LSU
- 5:13Speaker 2: coming off the Ole Miss game. Texas at Tennessee. Iowa
- 5:18Speaker 2: at Michigan. Ole Miss at Florida. Now, I know what
- 5:20Speaker 2: you're going to say. Jim, that's not half as good
- 5:23Speaker 2: as the one you just read.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Oh, I don't know. But it's pretty good. Yeah, it's
- 5:26Speaker 1: really good.
- 5:27Speaker 4: If Michigan was at Iowa... make it a little bit better. But, uh, yeah,
- 5:31Speaker 4: that's a great weekend of college football.
- 5:33Speaker 1: We don't have all the TV times on that one
- 5:35Speaker 1: just yet, because I was going to say, Brad, I
- 5:37Speaker 1: wish we were in charge of the TV times. I agree.
- 5:40Speaker 1: But primarily we don't Lance because the SEC has got
- 5:43Speaker 1: four games on hold in that middle window. Vandy at Auburn, Oklahoma, Georgia,
- 5:47Speaker 1: Ole Miss at Florida and Texas A & M at LSU.
- 5:50Speaker 1: They're going to wait for a little bit and see
- 5:52Speaker 1: how some of this plays out before they start throwing
- 5:54Speaker 1: TV times on there. Um, But, boy, if you could
- 5:58Speaker 1: get one of those SEC games. Well, you've already got
- 6:00Speaker 1: one early. Texas at Tennessee is in the early window.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Just don't know if it's ABC or ESPN. Throw another
- 6:06Speaker 1: one at 2.30, another one at primetime, and have Oregon
- 6:09Speaker 1: at USC either at 2.30 or primetime. Thank you. That
- 6:11Speaker 1: would be fantastic right there.
- 6:13Speaker 2: The third best week is back into November. I mean, look,
- 6:17Speaker 2: three and four. One, three, and four are all November.
- 6:19Speaker 2: So November to remember again this year. Number three on this,
- 6:23Speaker 2: Michigan at Oregon. Ole Miss at Oklahoma, Texas at LSU,
- 6:29Speaker 2: USC at Indiana.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Wow.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Utah at Arizona, and then Tennessee at Texas A & M.
- 6:37Speaker 2: That's November 14th. Lance, it's almost hard.
- 6:41Speaker 1: To make an argument that all six of those games
- 6:44Speaker 1: will not have college football playoff implications. I'm not saying
- 6:47Speaker 1: for both teams. And that's the design of the playoffs, right?
- 6:49Speaker 1: Playoff meaningful games in November. Just go through them. Michigan
- 6:52Speaker 1: and Oregon. By November 14th, you don't feel like Oregon's
- 6:56Speaker 1: eliminated and Michigan may not be.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Michigan could be one of those surprises like Virginia Tech
- 7:01Speaker 4: and the ACC.
- 7:01Speaker 1: But yeah, I agree. Oregon 100% will be in it.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Ole Miss at Oklahoma I mean both should be in
- 7:06Speaker 1: it both should be in it both could be eliminated
- 7:08Speaker 1: they've got difficult schedules Texas at LSU same yeah I
- 7:10Speaker 1: agree both USC at Indiana I mean that could be
- 7:13Speaker 1: do or die for USC by then with their schedule
- 7:15Speaker 1: that's right and Utah and Arizona I mean that both
- 7:17Speaker 1: those teams are factors in the Big 12 in the
- 7:19Speaker 1: Big 12 the race to the Big 12 championship well think.
- 7:22Speaker 4: About this at that point that's one week after the
- 7:24Speaker 4: holy war that's right so let's just imagine and let's
- 7:27Speaker 4: just say that it plays out like this Utah wins
- 7:29Speaker 4: that game at home in Salt Lake where they're going
- 7:31Speaker 4: to be favored should be favored I know that's kind
- 7:33Speaker 4: of flip back and forth, but they win that game,
- 7:35Speaker 4: then they go on the road to what should be
- 7:37Speaker 4: a really good Arizona team that could really throw a
- 7:40Speaker 4: wrench in everything in the Big 12.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And then Tennessee at A & M speaks for itself.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, that's a sweet day. To your point, though, Ole.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Miss-Oklahoma, that may be an elimination game.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Could be, with their schedules, yeah.
- 7:51Speaker 2: That may be the two SEC teams that are closest
- 7:53Speaker 2: to the bubble at that point.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It's not crazy to say with their schedules that that
- 7:56Speaker 1: is the one game that doesn't have playoff implications. I mean,
- 7:58Speaker 1: would the slate those two have to play? I mean,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you could make an argument that they're both out of
- 8:03Speaker 1: it by that game. I don't think they will be,
- 8:05Speaker 1: but you could certainly argue.
- 8:06Speaker 2: November 21st is the fourth best sit-on-your-butt-on-the-couch weekend. SMU at
- 8:12Speaker 2: Notre Dame. That's a sneaky, hard game for Notre Dame.
- 8:16Speaker 2: We talk about Notre Dame's easy schedule. They're the most
- 8:18Speaker 2: picked team likely to go unbeaten.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Well, here's the thing.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Notre Dame loses these home games. You know, you go
- 8:24Speaker 4: back to the baffling the Marshalls in the northern Illinois,
- 8:27Speaker 4: but last year it was Texas A & M.
- 8:29Speaker 1: That's right.
- 8:29Speaker 4: So, you know, I would say, man, it'd be a
- 8:31Speaker 4: much better game if it was in Dallas, but I
- 8:33Speaker 4: don't know. Notre Dame seems to slip up at all.
- 8:35Speaker 1: What do you think the point spread right now is?
- 8:37Speaker 1: Notre Dame, nine and a half.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Okay.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd say seven and a half. About the time
- 8:41Speaker 1: they kick? Yeah. Yeah, Notre Dame team's going to be
- 8:44Speaker 1: a juggernaut.
- 8:45Speaker 2: They are, but their toughest games are Miami and maybe
- 8:49Speaker 2: this SMU team.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Maybe, yeah.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Texas A & M at Oklahoma, Indiana at Washington.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Indiana-Washington is an interesting game.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, right now I would list Indiana as
- 9:00Speaker 4: a three and a half point favorite.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Listen to what I'm about to say right here. That
- 9:03Speaker 1: could be do or die for Indiana.
- 9:05Speaker 2: And Washington. It could be an elimination game for both
- 9:07Speaker 2: of them.
- 9:07Speaker 1: There is no doubt.
- 9:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Virginia Tech at Miami, LSU at Tennessee, and Arizona at
- 9:14Speaker 2: Kansas State.
- 9:16Speaker 1: By the way, he's stacking this Big 12.
- 9:18Speaker 4: So Arizona then upsets Utah, who just beat BYU. Now
- 9:23Speaker 4: they've got to go to Manhattan in a sneaky good
- 9:25Speaker 4: year one Colin Klein with Avery Johnson back for his
- 9:27Speaker 4: fourth year.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Then they pull off the upset. And then at that
- 9:30Speaker 1: time we're talking about, man, this Big 12 is wild.
- 9:34Speaker 2: So one September, three November, and then there's one weekend
- 9:37Speaker 2: in October, October 17th, that gives you Ohio State at Indiana,
- 9:42Speaker 2: Penn State at Michigan, Notre Dame at BYU. There's another
- 9:46Speaker 2: tricky Notre Dame game.
- 9:47Speaker 1: It is tricky.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Alabama at Tennessee. And the last two times Alabama's been there,
- 9:51Speaker 2: they've lost. And Florida at Texas.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Now, Alabama-Tennessee going crimson-orange jerseys.
- 9:59Speaker 1: That is correct.
- 9:59Speaker 2: They are, yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 10:01Speaker 2: So, I mean, that's five good weekends there. Sadly, week
- 10:06Speaker 2: number one is not on there, but there's good enough
- 10:08Speaker 2: games to get you through the other ones. But that
- 10:10Speaker 2: November 7th at the top of the board there is–
- 10:14Speaker 2: That's a historic weekend.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Part of it is because Alabama and LSU got so
- 10:19Speaker 1: good that it became the must-see game in the SEC.
- 10:21Speaker 1: But it feels like for a while, that first weekend
- 10:24Speaker 1: in November has been your best weekend schedule-wise of the year.
- 10:26Speaker 1: It may not play out as your best weekend of
- 10:28Speaker 1: the year. Some others have. But schedule-wise, it seems like
- 10:31Speaker 1: more often than not, that first week in November, that
- 10:34Speaker 1: first Saturday in November, we find ourselves with an incredible
- 10:37Speaker 1: college football schedule. Even in the preseason, that one's amazing.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I mean, I don't even know. I mean, you look
- 10:45Speaker 1: at those games, and I know you were like, boy,
- 10:47Speaker 1: Virginia Tech-SMU, but heck, by then, who knows? You know,
- 10:50Speaker 1: the way the ACC goes, LA could be the two
- 10:53Speaker 1: top teams in the standings. Could be. The way that
- 10:55Speaker 1: conference plays.
- 10:56Speaker 4: But, I mean, it's the most fascinating conference. Is it
- 10:59Speaker 4: still the SEC just because there's so much talent? We
- 11:01Speaker 4: went through one through eight teams that realistically could be
- 11:04Speaker 4: in Atlanta in December.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I think there's eight or nine teams that think they're
- 11:07Speaker 2: going to the playoffs this year.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I mean.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Florida and Auburn can be optimistic. Are you including Missouri
- 11:16Speaker 4: in front of Florida? Missouri's ranked number 25. I don't
- 11:20Speaker 4: think they belong there. I would actually put Florida at
- 11:23Speaker 4: 25 before I would Missouri, but Missouri's a ranked team.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Are you including Tennessee? I'm including Tennessee. I'm including Tennessee.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I would include Tennessee. You would include Tennessee as a
- 11:30Speaker 1: fan base that thinks they should go to the playoffs.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Two years removed from the playoff with Jim Knowles coming
- 11:34Speaker 4: in and taking over that defense. I think much like
- 11:37Speaker 4: Keelan Russell, Tennessee fans are excited now about Faison Brandon.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Well, look, I mean, the truth is, and we've talked
- 11:42Speaker 1: about it a lot, Heupel gets good quarterback play. I mean,
- 11:46Speaker 1: he's not quite to the level of in Heupel I
- 11:48Speaker 1: trust a quarterback, but he's pretty dang close. Yeah, he's
- 11:50Speaker 1: pretty close. Yeah, Ryan Day's there.
- 11:52Speaker 4: I mean, just in the SEC, Lane Kiffin, Kalen DeBoer,
- 11:56Speaker 4: and I think he's right there with them.
- 11:57Speaker 1: And really, Sark. I mean, I trust in Sark's quarterbacks.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I know Arch Manning wasn't great to start the year
- 12:01Speaker 1: last year.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I just thought that was interesting from Bud Elliott, and
- 12:05Speaker 2: he put that out on socials, and it was fun
- 12:08Speaker 2: to share with everybody as we get ready to enjoy
- 12:11Speaker 2: this upcoming college football season together. We are also getting
- 12:18Speaker 2: ready to name a few more quarterbacks. Alabama this year
- 12:22Speaker 2: opens with East Carolina. East Carolina named their starting quarterback yesterday.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Mitch Griffiths is the.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Starting quarterback for East Carolina.
- 12:31Speaker 2: He has played at Wake Forest, North Texas. Last year
- 12:36Speaker 2: was a backup at Texas Tech, and now he's the
- 12:39Speaker 2: starter at East Carolina. When they come to play Alabama
- 12:42Speaker 2: in the opener, their backup is Emory Williams.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Who he beat out. So that's the two QBs that
- 12:47Speaker 1: are coming to town. Yeah, I'm not even familiar with
- 12:48Speaker 1: the kid.
- 12:49Speaker 4: And normally in these situations— guys find their way even
- 12:53Speaker 4: if it's from an ohio state to an east carolina
- 12:55Speaker 4: to be a starting guy yeah i wonder.
- 12:58Speaker 1: If he's kicking himself at least and leaving texas tech
- 13:00Speaker 1: i don't know if he would have been the backup
- 13:02Speaker 1: behind sorsby as well.
- 13:03Speaker 4: We've got texas tech quarterback news this morning too or
- 13:06Speaker 4: late yesterday which is kind of crazy with all that
- 13:09Speaker 4: said i mean the pirates are replacing 21 of 22
- 13:11Speaker 4: starters so as surprising as they were last year i
- 13:16Speaker 4: just don't have a lot of expectation and even if
- 13:18Speaker 4: they are better than advertised how difficult is it going
- 13:20Speaker 4: to be road You know, road week one, putting this
- 13:24Speaker 4: thing together with 21 new starters.
- 13:27Speaker 2: LT mentions Thomas Castellanos, who Arthur, he was the quarterback
- 13:32Speaker 2: that beat Alabama last year at Florida State, one-time Boston
- 13:36Speaker 2: College quarterback, is now the Texas Tech backup. Is there
- 13:41Speaker 2: a chance, and I don't know the numbers, but is
- 13:44Speaker 2: there a chance he's getting more money to back up
- 13:46Speaker 2: at Texas Tech than he's got any time in his career?
- 13:50Speaker 1: I don't know what Florida State was paying him last year.
- 13:52Speaker 4: I think they had to pay him a pretty good
- 13:54Speaker 4: amount to pry him from BC in conference.
- 13:59Speaker 1: But boy, Texas Tech had to have a backup.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Yeah, because I still think, although they have cleared Will
- 14:05Speaker 4: Hammond for week one, how healthy is he?
- 14:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, as the Swordsby thing unfolded, Castellanos held
- 14:11Speaker 1: a lot of cards. Because you've got to have a backup.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Your backup is now your starter in Will Hammond. So,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know what you pay a backup.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I know what reportedly Austin Mack's getting paid to backup
- 14:21Speaker 1: in Tuscaloosa. And it's the college version of Chase Daniel,
- 14:25Speaker 1: if some of these numbers are correct. I mean, Chase made,
- 14:27Speaker 1: we kid Chase, a kid had chased about it when
- 14:30Speaker 1: he was on the show last week about what kind
- 14:32Speaker 1: of living he made as an NFL backup. It's starting
- 14:35Speaker 1: to be a pretty good spot in college too. And
- 14:37Speaker 1: that's only going to increase because as kids hit the
- 14:40Speaker 1: transfer portal, quarterback depth is not what it used to be.
- 14:43Speaker 1: So having a quality backup is going to be very important.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Because in the offseason, your guy could bail. Your room
- 14:49Speaker 1: could be empty.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Like backups for Joey McGuire. Last year, it was weird
- 14:52Speaker 4: because Barron Morton, who's now on the Patriots roster, I
- 14:55Speaker 4: don't know if he's going to make the 53-man or not.
- 14:57Speaker 4: He was more of a traditional quarterback. And you look
- 15:00Speaker 4: at Will Hammond, very athletic, can run the football. Now
- 15:03Speaker 4: they bring in Castellanos that just kind of goes right
- 15:07Speaker 4: behind him. It makes a lot of sense.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Like if Auburn had hired John Summerall, I wonder who
- 15:10Speaker 1: Auburn's starter is this year. They've got Byron Brown because...
- 15:16Speaker 1: they hired Alex Golish.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Well, you assume that he probably brings in the same
- 15:19Speaker 4: offensive coordinator, so it probably is Aaron Filo.
- 15:21Speaker 1: It's probably Aaron Filo for Georgia Tech, right?
- 15:23Speaker 2: That'll be something to watch in that game, yeah. Already,
- 15:26Speaker 2: if you're an Auburn fan, you got Golish, you're happy
- 15:28Speaker 2: with Golish.
- 15:28Speaker 1: That's right.
- 15:29Speaker 2: But there was a moment you thought you were getting
- 15:31Speaker 2: John Sumrall.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Yeah, my point was, you've got your quarterback because he
- 15:36Speaker 1: played for that head coach, and that's where he chose
- 15:37Speaker 1: in the transfer portal. And maybe Deuce Knight doesn't bail
- 15:40Speaker 1: if Golish doesn't, if it's Sumrall. I don't know how
- 15:42Speaker 1: that would play out, but You know, that's the whole
- 15:45Speaker 1: reason Byron Brown's your starter is because he's the head coach.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Memphis named Marcus Stokes their starting quarterback. He was at
- 15:51Speaker 2: West Florida last year. He'll quarterback at Memphis. He beat
- 15:54Speaker 2: out Aaron Nolan, a one-time Blue Chip recruit. So those
- 15:57Speaker 2: are some starting quarterbacks named. I want to ask a
- 16:00Speaker 2: question about pressure and not pressure. And for that, we'll
- 16:05Speaker 2: go cut five, Tyler, if you can. Lincoln Riley here. Now,
- 16:09Speaker 2: he gets asked about if he is more relaxed. uh
- 16:15Speaker 2: going into this season and uh he starts off uh
- 16:19Speaker 2: with a person who probably knows the answer to.
- 16:21Speaker 3: That i don't know maybe ask my wife she might
- 16:26Speaker 3: be a better a better judge um i don't know
- 16:31Speaker 3: i've like made a conscious decision to to try to
- 16:33Speaker 3: be more that way i mean i am excited and
- 16:35Speaker 3: confident about what we're doing i mean there's no that's
- 16:38Speaker 3: real um So, you know, do I have that feeling
- 16:42Speaker 3: of confidence and is that fun? And is it fun
- 16:45Speaker 3: to see some of these things that we've been working
- 16:47Speaker 3: on for years and years start to come to fruition
- 16:49Speaker 3: or come to fruition? Yeah. Like it's sure it is.
- 16:52Speaker 3: It's been a, it's been a long road here. And, and, um,
- 16:56Speaker 3: and so seeing some of those things that came through
- 16:58Speaker 3: that were just kind of ideas years ago or thoughts
- 17:02Speaker 3: or hopes or whatever, like that's, that's fun to see.
- 17:05Speaker 3: And it does energize you and excite you. And, I
- 17:07Speaker 3: do have a lot of confidence in the football team
- 17:09Speaker 3: that I think we have a chance to be and,
- 17:11Speaker 3: you know, really the program that we have a chance
- 17:13Speaker 3: to be here in the next several years. I mean,
- 17:16Speaker 3: it's a fun job right now, for sure.
- 17:18Speaker 2: If I said give me five coaches that have the
- 17:22Speaker 2: most pressure on them this year, and I'm not talking
- 17:25Speaker 2: hot seat getting fired here, but, you know, that may
- 17:27Speaker 2: be part of it. The five biggest named coaches that
- 17:31Speaker 2: have the most pressure on them.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I mean, let's start at the top. Oregon.
- 17:34Speaker 5: Oregon.
- 17:35Speaker 1: You would say Dan Lanning is absolutely number one?
- 17:37Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. He's got the same amount of wins over
- 17:40Speaker 4: the last four years, in his four years at Oregon,
- 17:42Speaker 4: than Ryan Day has at Ohio State.
- 17:44Speaker 1: But you know what's missing? National championship. National championship. I
- 17:47Speaker 1: think Marcus Freeman.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Wow.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I mean, I really do.
- 17:50Speaker 4: They missed the college football playoff last year. You look
- 17:53Speaker 4: at this schedule. They are going to be favored in
- 17:56Speaker 4: every one of their games. The expectation is national championship
- 18:00Speaker 4: or boss.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Everybody likes him.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Yeah, the first two you gave I thought seemed very
- 18:04Speaker 2: comfortable in their skin and very comfortable at their jobs,
- 18:07Speaker 2: and I would not have gone either one of those ways.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I like your perception of that.
- 18:11Speaker 4: But I do think that internally they've got a lot
- 18:13Speaker 4: of pressure. I mean, these guys are perfectionists, and they
- 18:16Speaker 4: have done everything right except win a national championship, more
- 18:19Speaker 4: so for Dan Lanning.
- 18:20Speaker 1: But I think I would put him there. Sark, definitely.
- 18:22Speaker 1: You got to agree with that. 100% on Sark. He
- 18:24Speaker 1: would have probably been at the top of my list. Yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 1: and I'm just going down the top 25 in a word.
- 18:29Speaker 2: And I believe Sark could get– there's a path to
- 18:32Speaker 2: where Sarkisian is not the coach next year at Texas,
- 18:34Speaker 2: in my opinion.
- 18:35Speaker 1: That path might be if there is an NFL opportunity
- 18:38Speaker 1: and you're like, I'm tired of beating my head against
- 18:40Speaker 1: the wall here. No, I think if they're 8-4, I
- 18:42Speaker 1: think big money people could fire him. Oh, no, no,
- 18:44Speaker 1: that too. But even at 9-3 or 10-2 and– Not
- 18:49Speaker 1: as deep in the college football playoff as you want
- 18:51Speaker 1: to be or whatever the case might be. You could
- 18:53Speaker 1: see him, if the offer were there, taking an NFL
- 18:55Speaker 1: head coaching job. Caleb DeBoer? I mean, DeBoer is a.
- 18:58Speaker 4: 100%.
- 18:58Speaker 1: It's a given. It might be number one. And Lincoln Riley.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Those would be my five. So you would put Riley
- 19:03Speaker 1: on there.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Maybe we should have whiteboarded this. Because I look at
- 19:06Speaker 4: guys like Pete Golden. Obviously, there's a ton of internal
- 19:09Speaker 4: pressure there. But he took a little off himself with
- 19:11Speaker 4: the way he handled the transition last year and winning
- 19:14Speaker 4: playoff game.
- 19:16Speaker 1: But I.
- 19:17Speaker 2: When you start talking pressure, what's the old saying? Pressure
- 19:23Speaker 2: burst pipes? What is it?
- 19:25Speaker 1: Yeah, pressure burst pipes. BBP. Yeah, something like that. It
- 19:28Speaker 1: also makes diamonds. Yeah, the first time they lose. Who's that, USC?
- 19:34Speaker 1: Ole Miss.
- 19:34Speaker 2: First time Pete Golding loses a game.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Especially if it's Louisville.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Oh.
- 19:40Speaker 1: In the opener. Let it be LSU. It's even worse.
- 19:42Speaker 2: I mean, LSU will be bad, but especially if it's Louisville.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Then I think Golding's... pressure changes. And I think it
- 19:49Speaker 2: very quickly could get very heated on Golding in Oxford
- 19:52Speaker 2: because of how good it's been the last few years.
- 19:55Speaker 4: You know, and there's other ones that we could sprinkle in.
- 19:57Speaker 4: I agree on Golding. Obviously, Lane Kiffin is there, but
- 19:59Speaker 4: it is year one. He's doing himself no favors by
- 20:02Speaker 4: all of the exterior.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Stuff going on.
- 20:04Speaker 4: But how about a guy like Matt Campbell at Penn State?
- 20:07Speaker 4: Penn State, you make the semis, then you fire your
- 20:10Speaker 4: coach in season the next year. What is the expectation there?
- 20:13Speaker 1: Now everybody in the world is like, Penn State's got
- 20:15Speaker 1: a pretty easy schedule. And then Matt Campbell, this guy's
- 20:18Speaker 1: a really good coach. I mean, I think your day
- 20:20Speaker 1: one expectations are 10 and 2 bare minimum. And that
- 20:23Speaker 1: is a lot of pressure.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Mike Elko, he's done a great job in two years,
- 20:26Speaker 4: but he can't beat Texas.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:29Speaker 1: So what you're telling me is there's a lot of
- 20:30Speaker 1: coaches that are under pressure. That's the nature of the business.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Every coach is under a certain amount of pressure, and
- 20:35Speaker 1: a lot of them put it on themselves. I bring
- 20:37Speaker 1: this up because of a comment Louis Riddick made, and
- 20:40Speaker 1: when we come back, I will tell you the comment
- 20:42Speaker 1: Riddick made about a certain player, and I want you
- 20:45Speaker 1: to tell me the player you think is under the
- 20:48Speaker 1: most pressure this year. He named a player yesterday on ESPN.
- 20:52Speaker 1: College or NFL? College player. That's under the most pressure.
- 20:55Speaker 1: We'll get to that.
- 20:56Speaker 2: NFL exhibition, we'll talk about that here in the opening hour.
- 20:59Speaker 2: of the next round that's presented by Hard Rock Bets
- 21:02Speaker 2: right here on Sport and State. The next round presented
- 21:06Speaker 2: by Hard Rock Bets on Sport and State as we
- 21:08Speaker 2: roll on here, before we jump back into our college
- 21:11Speaker 2: football NFL conversation, the world continues to celebrate the life
- 21:16Speaker 2: of Dolly Parton. Yesterday, 26 of the top 30 most
- 21:21Speaker 2: downloaded songs on iTunes were Dolly songs.
- 21:24Speaker 1: That's great.
- 21:25Speaker 4: I saw on Netflix, I was just kind of scanning around.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Maybe it was Netflix or maybe it was just, I
- 21:30Speaker 4: don't know, one of these streaming services, but.
- 21:31Speaker 1: It had all these Dolly movies available. Yeah.
- 21:35Speaker 2: So 26 of the top 30 songs were Dolly songs yesterday.
- 21:38Speaker 2: And it has worked out because they planned this six
- 21:40Speaker 2: years in advance. The next named storm in the Atlantic.
- 21:46Speaker 1: We're to the D. Get out.
- 21:48Speaker 4: Good.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Are you serious?
- 21:49Speaker 5: Yep.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys saw some of the
- 21:51Speaker 1: memes out on the coffin. I did. She would have
- 21:54Speaker 1: laughed at it. She would have laughed her ass off. Oh, yeah.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I would imagine. There's a hump. Oh, yeah. Yeah, too.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Her longtime joke was, I have small feet because things
- 22:03Speaker 2: don't grow in the shade.
- 22:05Speaker 1: That was always her joke.
- 22:06Speaker 4: It's just amazing how long she's been an icon. Because
- 22:09Speaker 4: if you go back and watch one of my favorites,
- 22:10Speaker 4: Urban Cowboy 1980, you know, in Gillies, they have, you know,
- 22:14Speaker 4: kind of a sidebar to the whole movie going on
- 22:18Speaker 4: is a.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Dolly Parton lookalike contest early in the movie.
- 22:21Speaker 6: Oh, wow.
- 22:21Speaker 1: 1980. 1980. That's a long time.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Yeah, she's very popular, and everyone continues to celebrate her life.
- 22:27Speaker 1: How about flags at half-staff? I mean, you've lived a
- 22:29Speaker 1: heck of a life as just a normal citizen. You
- 22:31Speaker 1: never served in politics to get flags at half-mast for
- 22:34Speaker 1: a week?
- 22:34Speaker 5: Empire State Building turned pink at 925.
- 22:39Speaker 2: The Space Needle did that. They were all over the world, really,
- 22:43Speaker 2: but all over the country for sure. Structures that could
- 22:45Speaker 2: light things up, lit it up pink.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Or purple, whatever it was.
- 22:49Speaker 5: And now there's a petition in Nashville with about 100,000
- 22:52Speaker 5: signatures to rename the Nashville International Airport to Dolly Parton
- 22:57Speaker 5: International Airport.
- 22:57Speaker 1: I would say that's easy. I would sign off on that. Oh,
- 23:00Speaker 1: heck yeah. Why would you not? Absolutely. That would be really,
- 23:05Speaker 1: really cool.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I think I saw someone say that almost at the
- 23:08Speaker 2: same time, the head of the, not the Democratic.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Party, but Oh, I saw the Democratic Socialist Party.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Democrat and the Republicans almost at the same time, almost
- 23:19Speaker 2: identical tweets and posts on social media. They almost were
- 23:24Speaker 2: exactly the same celebrating Dolly Parton.
- 23:25Speaker 1: It was the head of the DSA and President Trump.
- 23:28Speaker 1: And it was almost identical. And the person I saw
- 23:30Speaker 1: this like, I don't know anybody else in the world
- 23:32Speaker 1: that could get two people.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Back to what you talked about, the approval rating. Like
- 23:36Speaker 4: there is nobody that has ever said anything that at
- 23:38Speaker 4: least we know. that is negative about Dolly Parton. She's
- 23:42Speaker 4: the furthest thing from polarizing.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and just recently they've tried to ask her questions
- 23:46Speaker 2: about President Trump or about this or about that, and
- 23:49Speaker 2: she's like, I'm a star.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I sing. I do this.
- 23:54Speaker 2: I don't get involved in things like that, and that's
- 23:56Speaker 2: probably why she has crossed so many aisles. Clay Travis Law.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Brings you part of the show today.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Accidents do not wait for a good time. One bad moment, wreck, fall,
- 24:06Speaker 4: doctor who wasn't paying attention, and suddenly you're fighting an
- 24:08Speaker 4: insurance company that does this every single day. That's why
- 24:11Speaker 4: Clay started Clay Travis Law. He built a firm around
- 24:15Speaker 4: one idea. People deserve someone willing to pay attention, ask
- 24:18Speaker 4: the hard questions, and push back when things don't add up.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Experienced trial attorneys who bring the fight to corporations and
- 24:24Speaker 4: insurers based in Nashville, trusted across the country. They lead
- 24:28Speaker 4: negotiations with honesty, determination, and some southern grit. Car and
- 24:32Speaker 4: truck wrecks, ride share accidents, medical malpractice, premises liability, product liability.
- 24:38Speaker 1: If you're wrong, they want to hear about it. Here's
- 24:40Speaker 1: what they promise. Honesty.
- 24:42Speaker 4: They don't sugarcoat your case. You're going to hear what
- 24:44Speaker 4: it's actually worth, not what you want to hear. The
- 24:47Speaker 4: case evaluation is free, no charge, no pressure, no hassle.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Just tell them your story. Go to ClayTravisLaw.com or call 877-222-4444.
- 24:53Speaker 4: That's ClayTravisLaw.com.
- 24:54Speaker 1: No case is too big or too small.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Give me the quarterback you think is under the most
- 25:04Speaker 2: pressure going into the season. Louis Riddick gave a name yesterday.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I mean, I just don't see how it can't be
- 25:09Speaker 2: Arch Manning. I mean, and I know, again, like coaches,
- 25:11Speaker 2: a lot of quarterbacks are under pressure. But this guy
- 25:15Speaker 2: entered college with an immense amount of pressure because of
- 25:18Speaker 2: the name on the jersey. And now you kind of
- 25:22Speaker 2: had a disappointing season, even though, as you frequently point out, fairly,
- 25:25Speaker 2: it was better at the end than it was at
- 25:26Speaker 2: the beginning. He got better at the end that people
- 25:29Speaker 2: tend to forget. But it's almost national championship or bust
- 25:33Speaker 2: for him.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I've got five guys that jump right
- 25:35Speaker 4: now just like the coaches.
- 25:36Speaker 1: They really do.
- 25:37Speaker 4: And I would start with Arch just based on the name.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Dante Moore is another one of these guys that if
- 25:42Speaker 4: Dante Moore would have come out, he would have gone
- 25:44Speaker 4: before Ty Simpson, in my opinion. I know everybody says
- 25:46Speaker 4: Sean McVay and Les Snead were in love with him.
- 25:48Speaker 4: But Dante Moore would have gone before. He came back
- 25:50Speaker 4: for one reason, sole reason only, to win a national championship.
- 25:53Speaker 2: I heard a discussion that it would have been closer
- 25:56Speaker 2: in Las Vegas' eyes between Dante and Mendoza.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:01Speaker 2: That maybe they would have gone Dante Moore instead of Mendoza.
- 26:03Speaker 4: But to give up being a franchise quarterback already, to
- 26:06Speaker 4: come back to college, there was one sole purpose. It
- 26:09Speaker 4: was to win a national championship. He's got to be included.
- 26:12Speaker 4: Darian Mensah, now going to Miami. They've done everything but
- 26:15Speaker 4: win a national championship with the run last year. He
- 26:18Speaker 4: is probably... outside of figures we don't know about Arch,
- 26:21Speaker 4: the highest paid quarterback in college football.
- 26:23Speaker 1: More on that in a second. We've got a list
- 26:24Speaker 1: for you. I think Mensah would be right there.
- 26:26Speaker 4: I think Trinidad Chambliss. It's almost like he's single-handedly carrying
- 26:31Speaker 4: this Ole Miss program right now. He finally gets approved
- 26:34Speaker 4: and gets reinstated. And now with this brutal schedule, Ole
- 26:38Speaker 4: Miss fans just expect this to be another 11-win season.
- 26:42Speaker 4: So there's a ton of pressure on him. And then
- 26:44Speaker 4: I would go Sam Leavitt, another one of these high-paid
- 26:46Speaker 4: quarterbacks that comes in, and automatically guys like Jordan Rodgers
- 26:50Speaker 4: are saying it's national championship or bust.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Can I point out how interesting it is? And I
- 26:57Speaker 1: don't think you just left him out. I think you
- 26:59Speaker 1: just didn't really consider him in this, and maybe rightfully so.
- 27:02Speaker 1: But he's about to start his second year, did not
- 27:03Speaker 1: win a national championship in his first, and we almost
- 27:05Speaker 1: never mention Julian Sayen in these types of conversations, the
- 27:08Speaker 1: Ohio State starter. And that is a pressure-packed job no
- 27:11Speaker 1: matter what.
- 27:13Speaker 2: And the biggest play in that game was a, Horribly
- 27:16Speaker 2: bad read when the cornerback jumped the route, passed out
- 27:21Speaker 2: in the playoffs, that pick six return. That was a
- 27:24Speaker 2: brain freeze from saying.
- 27:26Speaker 1: It was.
- 27:26Speaker 2: It was a great play. Probably wasn't expecting that guy
- 27:28Speaker 2: to be there. Didn't look like it when he threw
- 27:30Speaker 2: the pass.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Here's why there's not as much, though. I've got a
- 27:33Speaker 1: theory on why there's not as much. He's going to
- 27:35Speaker 1: play three more years. That's my theory, is that he's
- 27:37Speaker 1: not going to go to the NFL. It doesn't appear.
- 27:39Speaker 1: He's going to play a while.
- 27:40Speaker 4: I think he's got literally three more years of college football.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Can he do this one? Oh, no, with the 5-5. Yeah,
- 27:45Speaker 1: with the 5-5, he's going to have three more years.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I mean, he is too small now.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Look, I mean, there might be people that talk him
- 27:51Speaker 4: into Bryce Young might end up winning 10 or 11 games,
- 27:54Speaker 4: get back to the postseason, and people point to him.
- 27:57Speaker 4: But I think Julian Sane, with the money that he
- 27:58Speaker 4: can make at Ohio State, I think he's locked in
- 28:00Speaker 4: for the next three years.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Louis Riddick.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Said the quarterback's under the most pressure this year in
- 28:07Speaker 2: college football is Keelan Russell. I knew you were going
- 28:10Speaker 2: to say that, too, when you set it up. I mean,
- 28:16Speaker 2: I can see it.
- 28:17Speaker 1: If you consider the pressure that Keelan DeBoer is under,
- 28:22Speaker 1: To go deeper in the playoffs. And the Alabama team
- 28:26Speaker 1: is under from their fan base to look more like
- 28:28Speaker 1: a Nick Saban team, which is what Alabama's fan base wants. Right.
- 28:33Speaker 1: They can say all they want that they support Caleb DeBoer.
- 28:36Speaker 1: And I think he should because I think this show
- 28:38Speaker 1: has been as out front on any show as any show.
- 28:43Speaker 1: It's saying we think the guy's a really good football coach.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Give him time. He'll get it right. But the expectation
- 28:48Speaker 1: is get this thing more like Saban.
- 28:51Speaker 4: Well.
- 28:52Speaker 1: the quarterback's going to have to do a lot to
- 28:54Speaker 1: do that. So I can see Keelan Russell.
- 28:56Speaker 4: I mean, internally, probably like if they're going to take
- 28:59Speaker 4: it to the next level. I mean, obviously, we've talked
- 29:01Speaker 4: about the offensive line and the running backs have got.
- 29:02Speaker 1: To be better.
- 29:03Speaker 4: Defense has got to be where it was last year
- 29:05Speaker 4: or even better than that. But he's going to have
- 29:08Speaker 4: to carry a lot on his shoulders. But I just
- 29:09Speaker 4: don't know a quarterback that's never started the game outside
- 29:12Speaker 4: of Arch Manning that can have that kind of pressure.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I just wonder is part of the pressure is that
- 29:17Speaker 2: there's a Competent number two behind him, the perception that
- 29:21Speaker 2: Austin Mack is right there over his shoulder.
- 29:23Speaker 4: Like that leash could get yanked quickly.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I think the pressure is that Jersey's crimson and the
- 29:27Speaker 1: pants are white. I mean, I think that's the pressure.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Alabama's quarterback, that comes with an immense amount of pressure
- 29:32Speaker 1: no matter what the situation.
- 29:33Speaker 2: But obviously it does almost everywhere for a.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Big program, right?
- 29:36Speaker 4: I mean, I would say there's more pressure on Gunner.
- 29:38Speaker 4: Stockton to win a playoff game. this year after going
- 29:40Speaker 4: 0-2 as a starting quarterback for Georgia.
- 29:43Speaker 1: C.J.
- 29:43Speaker 4: Carr has yet to win a playoff game. I think
- 29:46Speaker 4: there's other guys that I would stack in front. Even
- 29:49Speaker 4: to me, John Mateer, with the expectation going into last year,
- 29:53Speaker 4: how far that fell short at least for Mateer. The
- 29:57Speaker 4: team obviously gets to the college football playoff, but Mateer
- 29:59Speaker 4: did not play even close to his potential. So I
- 30:02Speaker 4: think there's a stack of quarterbacks that would be for Keelan,
- 30:04Speaker 4: in my opinion.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I just wonder if you're a guy like Mensah,
- 30:09Speaker 2: is there anybody you look over your shoulder? I mean,
- 30:11Speaker 2: no matter what I do, man, I'm the guy.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Yeah, but if.
- 30:16Speaker 4: You don't play Cam Ward-like football, your team's not going
- 30:19Speaker 4: to win every game.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Here's the thing, though, back to Russell. Like, do you
- 30:22Speaker 1: think it is– Like there have been quarterbacks at Alabama
- 30:26Speaker 1: and at other schools. And boy, this is going to
- 30:28Speaker 1: sound like a shot at Ty Simpson. And please understand
- 30:31Speaker 1: what I'm saying. It is not. I got a ton
- 30:33Speaker 1: of respect for Ty Simpson. There have been harder acts
- 30:36Speaker 1: to follow than that at Alabama. Oh, yeah. And at
- 30:40Speaker 1: other schools. It's not just Alabama at other schools at
- 30:42Speaker 1: Ohio State. You know, there have been harder acts to
- 30:44Speaker 1: follow than what Julian saying may be. But there have
- 30:48Speaker 1: been harder acts to follow than Ty Simpson. Jalen Milrow
- 30:50Speaker 1: had a really difficult follow. Oh, my gosh. You dropped
- 30:53Speaker 1: him in right after Bryce Young. the first Heisman Trophy
- 30:57Speaker 1: winning quarterback in Alabama football history. Bryce Young had to
- 30:59Speaker 1: follow Mac Jones. And I know you may laugh, but
- 31:03Speaker 1: that offense was insane in 2020. It was the best
- 31:06Speaker 1: single-season offense in Alabama history. And he had to follow
- 31:08Speaker 1: Tua Tungvaluwa, who was one of the best quarterbacks ever
- 31:12Speaker 1: to play at Alabama. I mean, there have been tougher
- 31:14Speaker 1: acts to follow. And I think if you had that
- 31:16Speaker 1: situation for Keelan Russell, this would be even more pressure-packed.
- 31:19Speaker 1: I do think he catches a little bit of a
- 31:21Speaker 1: break there. Not that people don't love Ty Simpson. But
- 31:24Speaker 1: Ty didn't exactly set the world on fire. Ty Simpson
- 31:27Speaker 1: didn't throw for 5,000 yards and 43 touchdowns or something
- 31:30Speaker 1: like that.
- 31:30Speaker 4: We are going to look back one day, especially if
- 31:32Speaker 4: Ty ends up playing well in the NFL, and we're
- 31:34Speaker 4: going to be like, man, you're talking about a handcuffed quarterback.
- 31:37Speaker 4: How he won 11 games and got to a college
- 31:39Speaker 4: football playoff with a terrible offensive line, no running backs,
- 31:42Speaker 4: receivers dropping the football.
- 31:43Speaker 1: All over the place. Won a playoff game on the road.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Against a great defense. But do you think overall Keelan
- 31:49Speaker 1: Russell will be viewed better than Ty Simpson this year?
- 31:52Speaker 1: I do because I think, well, I don't know about
- 31:53Speaker 1: this year. That's right. Before he's done, I would say. Yeah,
- 31:55Speaker 1: before he's done. Yeah, before he's done.
- 31:57Speaker 4: You know, Dunaway has always alluded to 2027. Alabama fans
- 32:01Speaker 4: don't want to hear that. But when you look at
- 32:04Speaker 4: the roster and how everything stacks up, 2027 makes a
- 32:06Speaker 4: lot of sense.
- 32:07Speaker 1: And by that time, Keelan, you know.
- 32:10Speaker 4: We fast forward this conversation in one year, we might
- 32:12Speaker 4: be talking about Keelan Russell's best quarterback coming back in
- 32:14Speaker 4: college football.
- 32:15Speaker 1: That's right. Could be. Because you're losing so many quarterbacks, too,
- 32:19Speaker 1: we assume. Apparently not Julian Sands. Yeah, not Sands and
- 32:21Speaker 1: not Arch Manning this week. We both have gone there. LTS,
- 32:24Speaker 1: Julian Sands serving 10 to 12.
- 32:27Speaker 4: Hey, wouldn't that be exciting if you're Ohio State and
- 32:31Speaker 4: Julian Sands?
- 32:31Speaker 1: Yes. Hey, go on and lock me into a three-year deal.
- 32:34Speaker 2: I'm going to go ahead and tell you guys right now,
- 32:36Speaker 2: I'm staying through my– Fifth year.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I'm your quarterback from now on. How much can you
- 32:41Speaker 1: pay me?
- 32:42Speaker 4: I would buy real estate in Columbus if I'm him.
- 32:44Speaker 1: I really would. I'd buy a badass house, and I'd
- 32:46Speaker 1: just go on and lock it down for three years.
- 32:47Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you really, at that point, you have
- 32:50Speaker 2: a more stable quarterback situation, sorry, Brown, than the Dolphins,
- 32:53Speaker 2: than the Cardinals. I mean, you start naming NFL teams,
- 32:57Speaker 2: the Buckeyes would have a better.
- 32:58Speaker 4: I got to bring this up because, you know, it
- 33:00Speaker 4: always comes back to the Rams. Because you brought the
- 33:01Speaker 4: Dolphins up. I saw a graph today.
- 33:04Speaker 1: I cracked the NFL door.
- 33:05Speaker 4: No, I saw a graph today, and it was the
- 33:07Speaker 4: last time the Rams had beaten all 31 teams.
- 33:10Speaker 1: And the team that goes the furthest back is the Dolphins.
- 33:12Speaker 1: You were at that game.
- 33:13Speaker 5: No.
- 33:14Speaker 1: The Dolphins whipped the Rams' ass at Halloween. Oh, that's right.
- 33:17Speaker 1: That's right, on Halloween.
- 33:18Speaker 4: And then I threw the Ottoman in the Redmont Hotel
- 33:21Speaker 4: when you guys came back from 13-0. But it was
- 33:24Speaker 4: 2001 was the last time.
- 33:25Speaker 1: The Rams beat them.
- 33:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:27Speaker 1: I was saying you were at the last Dolphins win
- 33:29Speaker 1: over the Rams, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. The one down,
- 33:31Speaker 1: Jakeem Grant returned the punt.
- 33:33Speaker 4: During COVID in 2021. But that's pretty wild that it's
- 33:36Speaker 4: been 25 years since the Rams have beaten the Dolphins.
- 33:38Speaker 1: If you play them this year. I know.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Here's the Oregon coach, Dan Lanning. getting asked about how
- 33:45Speaker 2: ready Dante Moore is for this season to start with
- 33:48Speaker 2: all these expectations.
- 33:50Speaker 1: How would you describe Dante's determination at this point to
- 33:53Speaker 1: just get out there, finally get into a game and
- 33:56Speaker 1: do what he does?
- 33:57Speaker 6: Yeah, I think he's gone through phases here throughout fall
- 33:59Speaker 6: where it's like, okay, I'm completely focused on what my
- 34:01Speaker 6: job is. But part of being Dante, what makes him
- 34:04Speaker 6: so special is being Dante when he's out there playing
- 34:06Speaker 6: with joy, playing with confidence, knowing, hey, I've been through
- 34:09Speaker 6: this a million times. We've given him a ton of
- 34:11Speaker 6: different looks. this fall that he hasn't really seen consistently before.
- 34:14Speaker 6: And I think that's been really good for him as
- 34:16Speaker 6: a player, but when he's out there playing with joy
- 34:17Speaker 6: and has a level of focus and is demanding of
- 34:20Speaker 6: the guys around him, we really separate as a team
- 34:22Speaker 6: and he's done a good job of that.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Yeah, he is. He's a difference maker and they've got,
- 34:27Speaker 2: this is Oregon's most talented team under Dan Lanning on paper.
- 34:30Speaker 1: I would agree.
- 34:31Speaker 4: You brought up the fact that you lose Tosh as
- 34:33Speaker 4: your defensive coordinator and You lose Will Stein, one of
- 34:37Speaker 4: the best offensive coordinators, and Drew Meringer is coming in
- 34:41Speaker 4: and taking over this offense.
- 34:42Speaker 1: And, you know, I don't know.
- 34:43Speaker 4: I mean, I just assume they're going to be really good. But,
- 34:46Speaker 4: you know, there could be, you know, some cross-communication and
- 34:50Speaker 4: things might be a little bit different for Oregon this year.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Here is– do you have something? No, it's just some
- 34:56Speaker 1: smirker in your face.
- 34:56Speaker 5: I do.
- 34:56Speaker 1: It's just a random– I can't get past it, though. Like,
- 34:59Speaker 1: when we watch Oregon video, I feel like I'm watching
- 35:01Speaker 1: video from Mars. It's like Oregon is this displaced college
- 35:05Speaker 1: football program out in the middle of nowhere. We're like, oh,
- 35:08Speaker 1: wait a minute. We've got video from Oregon. It's just
- 35:12Speaker 1: like they're– And what does his cup say? Like, I
- 35:14Speaker 1: know I'm not a coffee guy. I can't tell. Maurice
- 35:16Speaker 1: does love to put a name on there. Is it
- 35:18Speaker 1: Good Lanning?
- 35:19Speaker 2: It says Coach Lanning.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Coach Lanning. Oh, okay. You know, that's probably from the
- 35:22Speaker 1: smoothie bar in their performance. Yeah, it should be. But
- 35:24Speaker 1: do you understand what I'm saying? It's like there's this
- 35:27Speaker 1: displaced program that's out in the middle of nowhere, and
- 35:31Speaker 1: it's Oregon. They're like, look at us.
- 35:33Speaker 7: Does it add to it the fact that every press
- 35:35Speaker 7: conference looks like they're sitting at a boardroom meeting?
- 35:38Speaker 1: It does. It does.
- 35:38Speaker 2: That backdrop helps. I've always hated that look. Sitting in
- 35:41Speaker 2: that chair at that table.
- 35:43Speaker 4: And it's the players do it, too.
- 35:44Speaker 7: It's like every time I see Scott cutting stuff up
- 35:46Speaker 7: from Oregon's video, like press conference stuff, I'm like, God,
- 35:50Speaker 7: that looks so weird to me.
- 35:52Speaker 1: It looks like they're at a city council meeting with
- 35:54Speaker 1: the microphone. I know.
- 35:55Speaker 4: The wall looks like leather. It looks like that's a
- 35:57Speaker 4: leather wall. I like how our friends from Toyota, they sneak.
- 36:01Speaker 1: In there, though. Sneak it in.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm with you, Brooks. It does look like
- 36:05Speaker 2: he's a U.S. representative in Congress and somebody's in front
- 36:08Speaker 2: of a panel. He's like, okay, Coach Lanning, you've already
- 36:12Speaker 2: been sworn in. Let's go ahead and— You've got to
- 36:14Speaker 2: press a button for his mic to turn on.
- 36:16Speaker 1: It's got the red little ring on it. I'm going
- 36:18Speaker 1: to plead the fifth here. I'm sorry.
- 36:20Speaker 4: If you remember, you only have five minutes. You brought
- 36:22Speaker 4: up Mars. I saw these pictures from Mars yesterday. I
- 36:24Speaker 4: don't know if you guys saw them.
- 36:25Speaker 1: I did. Yeah, those things. The resolution on the pictures
- 36:28Speaker 1: from Mars were incredible. Yeah. It just looked like a
- 36:30Speaker 1: bad day in Arizona. It did.
- 36:32Speaker 2: I thought to myself, that looks sort of livable. Oh, God.
- 36:36Speaker 1: I mean, again, if you don't like green, it looks
- 36:40Speaker 1: sort of livable.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Yeah, like I really expected to walk in here today.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Jeeves, can you pull them?
- 36:46Speaker 2: I expected to walk in today and Forrester have some
- 36:48Speaker 2: AI version when that camera starts to pan and get
- 36:51Speaker 2: over to something over here, some funny joke of his, like,
- 36:55Speaker 2: you know, quarterback, Falcons quarterback room, you know, Dusty and
- 36:59Speaker 2: the Relics over there.
- 36:59Speaker 1: But they were amazing photos that came down yesterday. Yeah.
- 37:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I mean, you look like you're in the desert.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Second one up now yeah i mean i i mean
- 37:11Speaker 1: livable yeah that first page was the yeah the first
- 37:14Speaker 1: page page number two yeah that one right there yeah
- 37:19Speaker 1: i mean boy you i mean it's like phoenix man
- 37:22Speaker 1: i i did not like phoenix the first time i
- 37:24Speaker 1: ever went because people got rocks for yards And everything's
- 37:29Speaker 1: just brown. Do you guys.
- 37:30Speaker 4: Wear 30 or 50 when you're out playing golf?
- 37:34Speaker 1: I wear 50 on my face. What do you think
- 37:35Speaker 1: you'd have to wear on Mars? You're further from the sun.
- 37:38Speaker 1: That's good.
- 37:39Speaker 4: Yeah, but I think there's more sun exposure or something
- 37:44Speaker 4: on Mars, yeah.
- 37:45Speaker 1: I roll with a sport 50, by the way. Yeah,
- 37:47Speaker 1: I do too. I had heard at one point there's
- 37:49Speaker 1: a certain SPF that once you get over it, it
- 37:51Speaker 1: really is. I've heard that too. You're only buying into numbers.
- 37:53Speaker 1: I think it's 50. Is it 50? I think it's 50, yeah.
- 37:56Speaker 2: We are SPF 100 here on the next round presented
- 37:59Speaker 2: by Hard Rock Bets and Sporting State. Real quickly, the
- 38:02Speaker 2: highest paid quarterbacks in college football are updated a list
- 38:06Speaker 2: from Pete Nacos at On3 Sports through their research. These
- 38:10Speaker 2: are what the highest paid quarterbacks are getting paid. And
- 38:13Speaker 2: you mentioned a couple of them, LT. So we've got
- 38:15Speaker 2: the dollar figures to back that up. Darian Mensah, according
- 38:20Speaker 2: to Nacos, and these are pretty firm numbers at On3 Sports,
- 38:24Speaker 2: North of $ 6 million.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Is what he's making. Good for him.
- 38:27Speaker 4: I think he is for sure one of the best
- 38:30Speaker 4: quarterbacks in college football. Is he worth $ 6 million? I
- 38:33Speaker 4: think the only way you get your $ 6 million back
- 38:35Speaker 4: is if you make a run like you made last.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Year, right?
- 38:37Speaker 2: There's only one NFL rookie quarterback that would make this list.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Fernando?
- 38:43Speaker 2: And it's Fernando Mendoza. And I don't think he's number one.
- 38:46Speaker 1: No, he wouldn't be.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Dante Moore. and Trinidad Chambliss both at $ 5 million, according
- 38:52Speaker 2: to Pete Nichols.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Chambliss had all the leverage because Kiffin had left and
- 38:56Speaker 1: would gladly have taken Chambliss with him. And it was
- 38:59Speaker 1: a victory for Ole Miss to keep him. So, buddy,
- 39:01Speaker 1: he cashed right in.
- 39:03Speaker 4: How many guys are working their ass off right now saying,
- 39:06Speaker 4: Trinidad at this time last year, nobody knew his name.
- 39:09Speaker 1: He was coming out of Ferris State. Ferris State transfer
- 39:11Speaker 1: probably making nothing.
- 39:12Speaker 4: And now he has hit the equivalent of the small
- 39:14Speaker 4: lottery in Florida.
- 39:15Speaker 2: So if you're sitting there in Blinn Junior College or
- 39:19Speaker 2: Ferris State or all those.
- 39:21Speaker 1: I could be him. Play hard.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Sam Leavitt and Josh Hoover at $ 4.
- 39:24Speaker 1: 5 million.
- 39:26Speaker 2: DeMond Williams, who is trying to leave, hung around with
- 39:29Speaker 2: his $ 4 million contract.
- 39:31Speaker 1: That ain't a lot in Seattle.
- 39:32Speaker 2: And then Drew Messamaker, $ 3. 5 million at Oklahoma State. If
- 39:36Speaker 2: I'm the head coach there, man, I'm taking you with
- 39:39Speaker 2: me to Oklahoma State, and you're.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Still going to work me for that? Yeah, you're going
- 39:43Speaker 1: to work me for $ 3. 5 million?
- 39:44Speaker 4: Coach Morris, I love you, but I've got other opportunities.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Oh, he had options, I'm sure, yeah.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I'm sure he said, listen, your system worked
- 39:51Speaker 2: because of me. You're making $ 7 million a year because
- 39:54Speaker 2: of me. Yeah, Lane would have taken him. Highest paid quarterbacks,
- 39:58Speaker 2: that's Pete Nacos on 3Sports. Always great research to get
- 40:02Speaker 2: from Pete there. When we come back tonight in the
- 40:04Speaker 2: NFL exhibition play, still to come, three brands that have
- 40:10Speaker 2: taken a step back.
- 40:12Speaker 1: We'll explain that to you as well.
- 40:14Speaker 2: But a little NFL football next right here on the
- 40:17Speaker 2: next round presented by Hard Rock Bets on Sporting State. Hey,
- 40:20Speaker 2: the NFL has pulled the plug on the Pro Bowl again,
- 40:23Speaker 2: probably for the final time. They've done the Manning thing
- 40:26Speaker 2: the last couple of times, right? So they're not even.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Going to do that now.
- 40:30Speaker 2: They're going to announce a Pro Bowl team every year
- 40:32Speaker 2: just to continue that tradition. 88 players on the list.
- 40:36Speaker 2: And they'll be invited to a celebration party out during
- 40:40Speaker 2: Super Bowl week this year in Los Angeles. So if
- 40:42Speaker 2: you're a Pro Bowler, you'll get a chance to be
- 40:44Speaker 2: honored at a big party wherever the Super Bowl is
- 40:48Speaker 2: every year.
- 40:48Speaker 1: So it'll be.
- 40:49Speaker 2: sort of an announcement, no game, no flag football, none
- 40:52Speaker 2: of that stuff anymore.
- 40:53Speaker 1: I mean, I can't remember. Like, I never even– I
- 40:56Speaker 1: didn't even know the Mannings. I guess maybe I knew
- 40:58Speaker 1: they were doing something. Yeah, I remember they did those games. Yeah,
- 41:01Speaker 1: it was Manning-produced, Omaha Productions, but they did, like, flag
- 41:04Speaker 1: football and skills competitions and stuff like that. Yeah, and
- 41:06Speaker 1: they coached– each Manning coached a team, AFC, NFC. Yeah,
- 41:08Speaker 1: I never saw it.
- 41:09Speaker 4: But, like, way back in the day, I used to
- 41:10Speaker 4: love the, you know, the old Aloha Bowl.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know why it felt better in Hawaii.
- 41:16Speaker 1: And players participated, you know.
- 41:18Speaker 2: And they played an actual game with pads. I hated
- 41:20Speaker 2: it because it was always the sign that it was
- 41:22Speaker 2: the very.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Last football you'll see. It was a very sad way
- 41:25Speaker 1: to end the season.
- 41:26Speaker 4: I think it was an honor at one time because
- 41:28Speaker 4: people started to defer. And I think what happened was
- 41:30Speaker 4: people started to make more money. Like it used to
- 41:33Speaker 4: be a way to get a pretty good check and
- 41:34Speaker 4: a good vacation. And now these guys are making so
- 41:36Speaker 4: much money. It's just not that important. I wonder what
- 41:39Speaker 4: the attendance will be like for this event in Los Angeles.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it sounds like it would be a private party,
- 41:43Speaker 2: to be honest.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Yeah, but I'm just like, I mean. You mean among
- 41:47Speaker 1: the players.
- 41:47Speaker 4: If Josh Allen gets upset in the AFC Championship, do
- 41:51Speaker 4: you think Josh Allen's going to show up at this party?
- 41:54Speaker 1: Hard to think that he would.
- 41:56Speaker 2: All right, part of the show being brought to you
- 41:57Speaker 2: by the folks at Crockett Coffee. This is 100% pure
- 42:01Speaker 2: Arabica beans, high-altitude beans, small batch roasted, all right here
- 42:07Speaker 2: in America's heartland. It ships fresh roasted, not sitting on
- 42:11Speaker 2: warehouse shelves for six months like some brands do. You
- 42:14Speaker 2: can get it in a light roast, a medium roast,
- 42:17Speaker 2: a dark roast, decaffeinated if you want that, organic, or
- 42:20Speaker 2: even that very popular mushroom blend. They've got that at
- 42:23Speaker 2: Crockett Coffee. Comes whole bean, comes grounded already, or in
- 42:27Speaker 2: the K-Cups. If you have one of those machines, you
- 42:29Speaker 2: can take that in your mornings and get a subscription

- 43:17Speaker 2: New England, Cleveland, San Francisco and Vegas, and the Rams
- 43:21Speaker 2: and the Chargers. I'll start Rams-Chargers, not because you're a
- 43:24Speaker 2: fan there, but that is a popular pick. to sort
- 43:29Speaker 2: of be a Super Bowl preview, 9 o'clock NFL Network tonight.
- 43:32Speaker 4: Well, look, I mean, the majority of people are going
- 43:34Speaker 4: to have the Rams representing the NFC just because on
- 43:37Speaker 4: paper and what we saw last year to improve that
- 43:41Speaker 4: 12-win team that really should have gone on and won
- 43:44Speaker 4: a Super Bowl. I understand why everybody's saying that. On
- 43:47Speaker 4: the other side, you know, the Chargers have made a
- 43:49Speaker 4: couple of adjustments. We talked about Mike McDaniel calling the
- 43:52Speaker 4: offense now. They lose Jesse Minner. Their defensive coordinator now
- 43:55Speaker 4: is Baltimore's head coach, but I think the Chargers are
- 43:57Speaker 4: going to be improved. Interesting thing in this game is
- 44:00Speaker 4: the Rams, once again under Sean McVay, have not played
- 44:03Speaker 4: a starter at all in the preseason. They are 2-0,
- 44:07Speaker 4: but this could be like an Austin Mack situation based
- 44:10Speaker 4: on this. So it looks like Ty Simpson, Stetson Bennett's
- 44:13Speaker 4: going to be the number two. Ty Simpson will get
- 44:15Speaker 4: the start tonight, but Matthew Caldwell will come in and
- 44:18Speaker 4: play probably the second half. He was the backup to
- 44:22Speaker 4: Arch Manning last year. Nobody knew this because he never
- 44:24Speaker 4: played at Texas, but now he's getting an opportunity in
- 44:27Speaker 4: the NFL. He's not going to make the roster, but
- 44:29Speaker 4: I just think it's interesting that it's a Matt Castle-like situation.
- 44:33Speaker 1: But Simpson starting is not indicative of what the actual
- 44:37Speaker 1: depth chart is right now. I think it is. You
- 44:39Speaker 1: think Simpson's the backup week one?
- 44:41Speaker 4: No, I think Simpson starting means he's at the three.
- 44:43Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Yeah, it's not indicative that he's
- 44:45Speaker 1: in front of Stetson. Bennett.
- 44:46Speaker 2: This is the weekend that you don't get a lot
- 44:49Speaker 2: of the starters.
- 44:50Speaker 1: And that's what I was trying to say. Everything's pretty
- 44:51Speaker 1: established now. That's what I was trying to say. This
- 44:53Speaker 1: does not mean Simpson's the backup. This means Simpson is
- 44:55Speaker 1: likely the third.
- 44:57Speaker 4: You're trying to keep right now four running backs. Who
- 44:59Speaker 4: is that fourth you're going to keep? You're keeping six receivers.
- 45:03Speaker 4: Who is that six? You'll see those kind of guys
- 45:05Speaker 4: play this weekend.
- 45:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:06Speaker 1: And Matthew Caldwell, this is just an exhibition tape for
- 45:09Speaker 1: him to send other.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Now, Justin Herbert is going to start for the Chargers.
- 45:12Speaker 4: Really weird how these coaches have different.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Beliefs on who should play in these games. Feels like
- 45:16Speaker 1: a roll of the dice. He's going to play seven
- 45:17Speaker 1: to nine plays. Yeah. Seven to nine plays. Hopefully one drive.
- 45:21Speaker 1: Seven to nine plays. How is that going to impact you?
- 45:23Speaker 1: You do not play a regular season game for two
- 45:25Speaker 1: weeks now. I don't get it. I don't get how
- 45:27Speaker 1: seven plays in an exhibition game. You know how it
- 45:29Speaker 1: impacts if he goes down in those seven. That's a
- 45:30Speaker 1: bad impact. Yeah.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Because you have these control practices.
- 45:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Like the Rams and Chargers may have gotten together this
- 45:37Speaker 2: week and done some mutual practices if they didn't. But
- 45:40Speaker 2: you have.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Earlier in the year.
- 45:41Speaker 2: No contact quarterback. No contact quarterback. You're more controlled there.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Nobody's hitting the quarterbacks there.
- 45:45Speaker 1: That's right. You know what they do in a live game?
- 45:47Speaker 1: They try to hit the quarterback and I just don't
- 45:49Speaker 1: see how seven to nine plays in an exhibition game
- 45:52Speaker 1: tonight is going to help you when the season starts
- 45:55Speaker 1: two weeks from yesterday, right? In Australia.
- 45:58Speaker 4: And it's crazy how these butterfly effect moments. But the
- 46:02Speaker 4: most impactful injury I remember, and almost breaking down watching this,
- 46:06Speaker 4: was when the Chargers played the Rams in 1999, the
- 46:10Speaker 4: final preseason game, and Trent Green went down with a
- 46:12Speaker 4: knee injury. Rodney Harrison... hit him low. He was done.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Dig for mill gets on the podium, starts crying. Kurt
- 46:18Speaker 4: Warner's going to be our guy.
- 46:19Speaker 1: I was like, who in the hell is Kurt Warner?
- 46:21Speaker 1: We're done. There it went.
- 46:22Speaker 4: They won their first championship ever that year. And you
- 46:25Speaker 4: never know what's going to happen. But, uh, that was
- 46:28Speaker 4: at that point, it seemed like a devastating injury.
- 46:30Speaker 2: Uh, here locally, I was at a place called, uh,
- 46:33Speaker 2: Baumhauer's wings when that happened. And I was hosting the original, um, the,
- 46:40Speaker 2: the league that was owned by the wrestler, uh, McMahon,
- 46:42Speaker 2: what was the name of that league? XFL, the original
- 46:45Speaker 2: XFL coaches show with Jerry DiNardo as the coach. And
- 46:49Speaker 2: we were recording it with a live audience at Buffalo
- 46:51Speaker 2: wild wings. And that happened on the screen. And that's
- 46:55Speaker 2: all we're trying to do a show. And that's all
- 46:57Speaker 2: everybody in the sports bar is talking about is, Oh
- 46:59Speaker 2: my God. In the exhibition game, the Rams just lost
- 47:02Speaker 2: their starting quarterback.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Uh, it was crazy.
- 47:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:05Speaker 1: And I'll stick with it.
- 47:06Speaker 4: You guys have heard me say before, Trent green from Indiana, uh,
- 47:09Speaker 4: Way before Fernando Mendoza would have won the MVP that year,
- 47:13Speaker 4: they still would have.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Won a Super Bowl. Good analysts on CBS now, by
- 47:15Speaker 1: the way. I like drinkers.
- 47:16Speaker 2: But all those players were so good around him. So
- 47:18Speaker 2: here's my question, and we'll talk about the rest of
- 47:20Speaker 2: the games in a second. But my question, I am
- 47:23Speaker 2: of the belief that I do not like the NFL preseason.
- 47:28Speaker 2: I hate these preseason games. Why not just go to
- 47:30Speaker 2: 18 games? I think the players would sign off on this.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Let's go 18 games, no exhibition games. And you do
- 47:35Speaker 2: all your roster cutdowns from the joint practices? Joint practices
- 47:39Speaker 2: or camps or whatever. The joint practices are primarily starters, right?
- 47:44Speaker 2: However you want to build your team, you build your team.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, the beauty of the preseason for the
- 47:48Speaker 1: franchise is the players hate them. There's no doubt. I
- 47:51Speaker 1: think the players, I think you're right. The players would say,
- 47:53Speaker 1: we will completely punt preseason and you can play 18 games.
- 47:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:57Speaker 1: The owners like the preseason because it's pure profit for them.
- 48:00Speaker 4: And I've still never understood how it's pure profit because
- 48:04Speaker 4: the television's weird on preseason.
- 48:06Speaker 1: It is, but they don't have to pay the players.
- 48:08Speaker 1: The players make a base salary for preseason, and it's
- 48:11Speaker 1: a smaller than normal salary. They do pay them, but
- 48:13Speaker 1: it's base.
- 48:13Speaker 4: But how much money can you make on tickets to
- 48:15Speaker 4: a preseason game and concessions?
- 48:17Speaker 1: Do they sell them as part of the season ticket?
- 48:19Speaker 1: Do they cram those in there, or do they sell
- 48:21Speaker 1: them separately? I can't remember. I think they're separate. So anyway,
- 48:23Speaker 1: so the owners do make some profit on those things
- 48:25Speaker 1: and they sell the TV rights, not for the big money,
- 48:27Speaker 1: but they do sell them locally and they make some
- 48:30Speaker 1: money on that. And, you know, parking concessions, all those
- 48:32Speaker 1: things add up. So I do think the owners like
- 48:35Speaker 1: them because of that. But the players, I think, would
- 48:38Speaker 1: be fine. I'll punt that. I think where the franchises
- 48:41Speaker 1: would not like it is how do I evaluate? Roster
- 48:44Speaker 1: spots 53 to 73. Joint practices. Back to your point.
- 48:48Speaker 4: But I think the joint practice is you're working your starters.
- 48:50Speaker 4: You are, but you still mix in these guys. And again,
- 48:53Speaker 4: I'm all about what is equitable. And this is equitable
- 48:56Speaker 4: if everybody's just playing 18 games instead of the preseason games.
- 49:00Speaker 4: And the NFL Network can get involved and show a
- 49:02Speaker 4: lot of these joint practices. Like as fans, I'd rather
- 49:05Speaker 4: watch a joint practice than a preseason game anyway.
- 49:07Speaker 2: To me, and listen, it's bad either way, but to
- 49:10Speaker 2: go down in an exhibition game or go down in
- 49:13Speaker 2: week one of an 18 game schedule i would much
- 49:16Speaker 2: rather go down and it's more palatable to me to
- 49:20Speaker 2: go down in a game that matters than an exhibition game.
- 49:22Speaker 4: Yeah when tom brady went down week one against the
- 49:24Speaker 4: chiefs and matt castle took over you're like damn that
- 49:27Speaker 4: is a terrible break but it's the regular season but they.
- 49:30Speaker 1: But i think they want to start when they start
- 49:32Speaker 1: right you're not saying push the nfl to week one
- 49:35Speaker 1: with the college football i think they'd still like to
- 49:37Speaker 1: start that week after labor day that's fine And now,
- 49:41Speaker 1: this year, the Super Bowl is Valentine's Day, so that
- 49:43Speaker 1: 18 games would push it Almost to the end of February,
- 49:47Speaker 1: which again, I'm not complaining about. You could play the
- 49:50Speaker 1: NFL till March 5th and I'd watch it. I don't care.
- 49:53Speaker 1: And President's Day is the 15th, right? Yeah, you're finally
- 49:55Speaker 1: getting what you've always wanted. Yeah, except we'll still be working.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Except you'll be working. We will, but a lot of people.
- 50:00Speaker 1: A lot of Americans will get it. Good for them.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Give me a storyline you're watching on these games tonight.
- 50:05Speaker 2: First one, 6 o'clock NFL. Pittsburgh and Buffalo tonight. Storyline
- 50:09Speaker 2: you're watching in this one, First Lance.
- 50:11Speaker 4: Pittsburgh and Buffalo, I guess who is going to be.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Mason Rudolph is going to be that number two, but
- 50:17Speaker 4: Drew Aller, can he stick? Can he make a run?
- 50:19Speaker 4: We kind of know what you're getting with Mason Rudolph.
- 50:22Speaker 4: The future quarterback I don't think is on this roster,
- 50:25Speaker 4: but could Drew Aller make that push?
- 50:27Speaker 2: Buffalo's done a pretty good job of getting some weapons
- 50:30Speaker 2: in the receiving core this offseason for Josh Allen, right?
- 50:33Speaker 1: I think they've gotten better. You know, it was interesting.
- 50:35Speaker 4: It got really heated this morning. I was watching our
- 50:37Speaker 4: man Dan Orlovsky, and he was talking about how bad
- 50:41Speaker 4: the rate, not, not how bad they were, how unknown
- 50:44Speaker 4: the ravers Ravens receivers are. And there were other guys
- 50:46Speaker 4: on the panel that are like, these receivers are better
- 50:49Speaker 4: than Buffalo's. And I mean, he was really going to
- 50:51Speaker 4: bat for the Buffalo bills receivers.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Um, I don't know. DJ Moore is a huge addition.
- 50:56Speaker 1: That's my point. Yeah. But what the bears now.
- 50:58Speaker 4: To the bills, but, but outside of that, like, you know,
- 51:01Speaker 4: Shakir was good last year. Key on Coleman still hasn't
- 51:04Speaker 4: done anything. Kincaid's a solid tight end and, you know,
- 51:07Speaker 4: James cooks a really good bag, but, They still, I mean,
- 51:09Speaker 4: outside of, if Josh Allen was to ever go down
- 51:11Speaker 4: and Kyle Allen took over.
- 51:14Speaker 2: Patriots-Browns tonight, 7 Central, 8 Eastern on prime.
- 51:17Speaker 1: Well, you're not going to get Watson, Sanders, or Dillon
- 51:19Speaker 1: Gabriel in this one. You're getting Talon Green in this one.
- 51:22Speaker 1: The former Arkansas quarterback gets the start for Cleveland tonight.
- 51:24Speaker 4: I made a prediction back in May when he got
- 51:27Speaker 4: drafted that he will start a game this year. He
- 51:29Speaker 4: has just got raw talent, and he is a full-out sprinter,
- 51:34Speaker 4: massive guy that can just fly. He's just got all
- 51:37Speaker 4: of this raw talent.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Do you think they keep him and punt Dylan Gabriel?
- 51:41Speaker 1: Let me back up. I think Gabriel may play tonight.
- 51:43Speaker 1: I think they're trying to evaluate Gabriel in green.
- 51:47Speaker 4: I think what will happen is you've got to carry three,
- 51:49Speaker 4: and I could see them have a fourth on the
- 51:51Speaker 4: practice squad.
- 51:52Speaker 2: San Francisco and Vegas tonight. mendoza's had a great game
- 51:56Speaker 2: in a so-so game be pretty interesting to see what
- 51:59Speaker 2: he does tonight against the 49ers.
- 52:00Speaker 4: Yeah he's been really really bad under pressure and you
- 52:04Speaker 4: know you're gonna get a lot of that in the
- 52:05Speaker 4: nfl i don't think he had to deal with nearly
- 52:07Speaker 4: as much of that last year in bloomington but yeah
- 52:09Speaker 4: it's it's more about and also identifying some weapons for
- 52:13Speaker 4: this raiders team you know genti right now is is
- 52:15Speaker 4: questionable with that ankle injury you know you got brock
- 52:18Speaker 4: bowers but Speaking of wide receivers, you don't have a
- 52:21Speaker 4: lot of wide receivers on that roster.
- 52:22Speaker 2: And the Rams and the Chargers at 9 o'clock on
- 52:25Speaker 2: the NFL Network tonight. You can get a play on
- 52:27Speaker 2: some of these or all these games at lanceslock.com. More
- 52:30Speaker 2: on them coming up at our next round show a
- 52:32Speaker 2: little bit later on. When we come back, we'll do
- 52:35Speaker 2: three brands that have taken a step back. One sports brand.
- 52:40Speaker 2: one pop culture brand, and one consumer brand. We've all
- 52:44Speaker 2: got three we're going to throw on our whiteboard. That
- 52:47Speaker 2: and more college football talk in our number two of
- 52:50Speaker 2: the next round, presented by Hard Rock Bets here on
- 52:53Speaker 2: Sport and State.
