- 0:05SPEAKER_05: It's episode eight of the Winanche Panther Podcast, and we start things off each week with the uh Panther athletes of the week.
- 0:13SPEAKER_05: We've got one of the two here.
- 0:14SPEAKER_05: Mike O'Neill is here.
- 0:15SPEAKER_05: And you know, I came away from that football game at Davis on Friday, by the way.
- 0:19SPEAKER_05: Congratulations on the win.
- 0:20SPEAKER_05: Uh I I I drove home.
- 0:23SPEAKER_05: It was in my head.
- 0:24SPEAKER_05: I went to bed that night.
- 0:25SPEAKER_05: I thought I was calling you Kai the whole time.
- 0:28SPEAKER_05: I thankfully I didn't.
- 0:30SPEAKER_05: Called you Mike.
- 0:31SPEAKER_05: Mike O'Neill joining us here, one of the Panther athletes of the week.
- 0:34SPEAKER_05: Three touchdown catches, which I just found out from your coach.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Tied a school record.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: I just found out too, actually.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So crazy.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Congratulations.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I appreciate it.
- 0:44SPEAKER_05: Talk about that game and about that win for you guys.
- 0:47SPEAKER_05: I know it's a nice bounce back from what happened to Moses Lake.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we didn't get the game we wanted versus Moses.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: That just we didn't put on a film at all what what we wanted to put out there as a team.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: But Davis was a big bounce back game for us.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: We our whole game plan was we wanted to win by 50, 60 points.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: And we didn't have the star we wanted either.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: They put up two touchdowns on us in the first two minutes.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Just two defensive breakdowns.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: It's not normal for our defense.
- 1:07SPEAKER_05: But tell me about the sidelines when that's going on.
- 1:09SPEAKER_05: Because I know you probably all were like, what happened?
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: It was shocking at first, but it's we all knew we all know the team we are and the team we're we're gonna be, so I don't think anybody was worried.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: It was more of a it was more of a shocking thing.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: We knew we were gonna bounce back.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:23SPEAKER_05: We're awake now.
- 1:24SPEAKER_05: We got the cold water on the face type of thing.
- 1:27SPEAKER_05: Um as you guys now go ahead, you've got uh Sunnyside this week, you've got the big East Mont game next week.
- 1:32SPEAKER_05: How hard is it not to overlook what you have this week?
- 1:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because that's gonna be the big matchup next is East Mont.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Well we just I I'd say we just should be where our feet are at.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So just focus on Sunnyside, get a win there, and then we can move on to East Mont.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: So I think like for sure it's a rivalry game, but we just yeah, be where our feet are at.
- 1:51SPEAKER_05: So what's what for for those that don't know what it's like to score a touchdown playing football?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: No, yeah, it's um it's fun for sure.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: One of my favorite feelings, but it's you kind of forget everything once you once you score.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it's it's awesome.
- 2:02SPEAKER_05: Aaron Powell Was it your last one that you got absolutely crunched at the goal line as the ball was coming to you?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, that was no, that was my first one.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, it was just slanting to see if we can't get it.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: Like, did he catch it?
- 2:13SPEAKER_05: Did he catch?
- 2:13SPEAKER_05: I'm waiting for the reps to do this, and it was it took a while.
- 2:17SPEAKER_05: Um how did you hang on to that football?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: It just repetition.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: Well, that's something your coach says too.
- 2:24SPEAKER_05: He says, you know, what I see on Friday nights is nothing new because I see these guys, you and Griffin and everybody else doing that during the week.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: No, yeah, we'd off-season, off-season work practice.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: We've been doing that all year, so it's it's nothing new when we happens to be a lot of things.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: I should mention, too, that our other athlete of the week who uh couldn't join us because she's got running start, she's a busy lady, uh Lily Hanson uh swim and dive.
- 2:45SPEAKER_05: And uh we're gonna try to catch up with Lily at some point in time.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: Do you know Lily at all?
- 2:49SPEAKER_05: Uh no, I don't think so.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: This is a big school.
- 2:52SPEAKER_05: There's a lot of bodies around here.
- 2:53SPEAKER_05: How is it negotiating these hallways and is it kind of like getting through a uh you know zone defense and finding a hole somewhere?
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: No.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: It's it's definitely packing the hallways, but it's it's manageable.
- 3:06SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 3:07SPEAKER_05: Well, congratulations.
- 3:07SPEAKER_05: Good luck against Sunnyside this week.
- 3:10SPEAKER_05: Stay healthy.
- 3:10SPEAKER_05: Oh, I was gonna ask you about that.
- 3:11SPEAKER_05: I noticed you you're kicking some, but you weren't kicking all the time.
- 3:14SPEAKER_05: Is that a change?
- 3:16SPEAKER_05: I noticed you had a sleeve on your lower leg?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, leg's been sore all season.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And it was also our kicker, our senior kicker, Damian, he's he's eligible now.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: So it's we're not really splitting reps, he's the starter, but I go in for a few, yes.
- 3:27SPEAKER_05: Okay, okay.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Do you like punting?
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Punting?
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I like kicking more than punting, but I'll do anything, whatever helps.
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: All right, all right.
- 3:33SPEAKER_05: Well, congratulations, I appreciate it.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Athlete of the week.
- 3:36SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 3:37SPEAKER_05: All right, there we go.
- 3:37SPEAKER_05: Mike and Nell joining us here.
- 3:38SPEAKER_05: We will take a break and come back.
- 3:40SPEAKER_05: And uh, coming up, we're gonna continue with a little football theme.
- 3:43SPEAKER_05: We're gonna talk defense and talk to uh defensive coordinator Jay Foster on the way.
- 3:47SPEAKER_05: And we're also gonna talk with Cash Schratz.
- 3:50SPEAKER_05: Tell me about Cash.
- 3:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, you go up against him in practice ready.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's awesome.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: I love Cash.
- 3:54SPEAKER_05: Okay, all right.
- 3:55SPEAKER_05: We'll do that as we continue with our eighth episode of the Winanch Panther Podcast.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: It's brought to you by Les Schwab and our friends at TGR Inc.
- 4:03SPEAKER_05: Oh, by the way, before you go, this is for you.
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: Thanks to Winstem Beverage, speaking of sponsors.
- 4:08SPEAKER_05: Uh Winstem Beverage is Pepsi Zero, so it's got the function without the county.
- 4:13SPEAKER_05: All right, we'll take a break and come back next year on the Winanch Panther Podcast on K R one oh, you know, we're gonna go to the house.
- 5:09SPEAKER_05: We've got a guy that uh I've known for a few years now, Jay Foster.
- 5:13SPEAKER_05: How are you doing, Jay?
- 5:14SPEAKER_05: I'm hanging in there, thank you.
- 5:15SPEAKER_05: Good, good defensive coordinator for the Winanche Panthers.
- 5:18SPEAKER_05: Uh you were across the river up until this year.
- 5:21SPEAKER_05: Tell me tell me about that transition and and moving from the east side to the west side as far as coaching.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Well, I I don't know how many people know, and you know, though, my career.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: Um, I was a college football coach and I've coached for and against some of my best friends.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: Um so it's it wasn't as difficult as people think.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: Um for me it was time for a change.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: Uh the one thing that I I believe I'm best at is being a defensive coordinator coaching kids.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: And um I I felt like as a head coach that kind of disappeared.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: And uh it it had happened to me at the collegiate level.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: Um I knew that when I came here ten years ago, I told the the folks that I went and interviewed with, I said, I don't want to be the head coach, it's not my goal.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: You know, I I love coaching, I love getting into the weeds with the kids, you know, getting in there and sure and uh and doing all the nitty-gritty and and and teaching and and as I've described, I love those light bulb moments.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: You know, where the kids go, oh, that's why.
- 6:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 6:20SPEAKER_05: Well, there's been some lights out defense played by these kids for you this I mean, absolute evolution from one season to the next on what's happening with Panther football as far as the defensive side of the ball is concerned, and and everybody's given you credit for that.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Oh well, I don't know if I deserve the credit.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: I think the the kids are the ones who do it every down.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, that's what I try to explain to them.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: My job's to put them in the right position.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: Their job's to go and execute and and get the job done.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, I think the biggest thing, at least that I saw when I got here was uh I want to call it a lack of confidence.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: They they weren't sure how to win.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: It had been a while.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: And um, and so teaching them that there's a a way for a group to be successful um i is I I think the biggest thing.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: You know, is getting over the mental block of we're not good enough, you know, or you you know, you're waiting for the next next uh ball to drop or hammer to drop, you know, and and and uh yeah, that tipping scale of once it starts going downhill, then oh well here we here we go again.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Correct, correct.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: And and I've seen moments of it, but the kids have done a great job of of uh of hearing me.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: You know, if you've watched our games after every series, I bring the entire defense over and we talk, you know.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: And um the the first time I saw it was when South Kittsap went right down the football field against us and scored after it was 14-0.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: And um you could see the look in their eyes, you know, and and they were looking for an answer.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: And and the bottom line is I didn't have the answer, they had the answer.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: You you know, you just have to believe in yourself and continue to do the things that you know that are right and that you've been that you've been coached to do, and and it's amazing how it'll come back around.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: And they did a great job of flipping the switch there.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Um obviously it happened against Moses, and we did some good things, and we did some not so good things um against a really, really good football team, and trying to explain to them that you you you don't have to be perfect all the time, but you gotta be pretty close.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know the the worst thing you can do is give people uh easy scores.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: And and a lot of times it's in the details, it's it's not necessarily.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: I've always told the guys, I said, I don't get upset when we make when I say a physical, when we get beat physically, sometimes the other guy just that's it's his play.
- 8:44SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: And he's better than me and he and he makes a play, and um and and so sometimes that happens and I'm okay with that.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: What I what I don't like is when we do something that we're not coached to do, which leads to a score.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: And and I call those mental mistakes, even though they may look like physical mistakes, sure.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it's an aiming point.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: Uh it happened last week.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Our corner took a poor aiming point, he misses the ball and it's six.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: You know, just like that.
- 9:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and that was I mean, that was uh Nat's hair away from being a pick six going the other way.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: And that's usually how it happens.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: I got it.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I've got this one.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: And you take it and it's oh no, I don't.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 9:25SPEAKER_05: Well, and then in that situation, too, he's on an island out there.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: Correct.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: And there's not a lot of help coming up.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: You have to you have to take the proper angle so if I miss, I've got help.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: And and those are the things that we work on.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: And it's all those little things, you know, footwork, how do I step, where do I place my hands, you know, all of those things that help you become better, or you know, it gives you the best opportunity.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: Um in my coaching career, I've never coached a place that had all the talent.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: So I learned at a very young age as a coach that we had to take every individual, meet them where they were, and try to make them the best possible player that they can be to give every kid a chance to be successful.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: You know, I've always described, I know how to defend, and I use the term Shaquille O'Neal.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: I always tell the guests, I know how to defend Shaquille.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: I know you gotta body him up and get your hips low and and push him high, get him off the block.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: The problem is, is I can't.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: And he's gonna dunk over me whether I do it right or not.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: So sometimes that happens.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: But if we're if we're just guessing and and trying to make up ways to do it, it doesn't work.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: So trying to teach guys how to uh and young men how to to be in the right position, to do the right things, and realize that there is a way to be successful.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: And sometimes sometimes they're uncomfortable.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it's not about me, it's about making my teammate better.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: Um, or giving them the opportunity.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: You know, our our term is don't don't you don't have to make every play.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: You just have to make the plays you're supposed to make.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: That's all we ask of them.
- 11:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I had a coach in college uh that said, Hey, I don't care if you do it completely wrong, but as long as you do it at a hundred percent.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: That's that's well that that's the other end of it.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: Sometimes I try, you know, I say if you're gonna make a mistake, make it going 100 miles an hour.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: You know, there's no doubt about that.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: You know, but trying to drill into them, why do we do things?
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: And and the more we're together, the more film I can show them of them out on the football field, of them trying to do the things that we're trying to coach.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: That that's when again the light bulb signed.
- 11:38SPEAKER_05: When did you get your first chance to get with these kids and start working on that attitude and and that evolutionary process?
- 11:46SPEAKER_05: You're talking about the end of May.
- 11:48SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 11:48SPEAKER_05: Um Springball and Yeah, yeah.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: I w I was obviously with them through the summertime.
- 11:53SPEAKER_05: Um It did it it it seemed to me, of course, I wasn't out for spring ball and didn't know I was going to be doing this.
- 11:59SPEAKER_05: But when I came to team camp, especially that last day whenever when you're doing the scrimmage, the the red zone drills and stuff, and and your kids are pitching a shutout, right, and you get the rest of the team on the sideline doing the cheer and all this kind of stuff, and I thought, this is different.
- 12:15SPEAKER_05: This is different than I've seen from what Anche in a long, long time.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Well, i again, it's trying to this is gonna sound wrong coming out, I know it.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: I'm pretty good at what I do.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: I was pretty good at the level that I was at, and and and was able to coach at a higher level and get nationally recognized.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: So I I've the things that I try to coach and the things we try to emphasize are things that have helped me be successful over my 40 some odd year coaching career.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: And I learned those mistakes as a very young coach.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 12:51SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: And um the one that stands out for me most is we had started the season three and one, and we had been uh now a nationally ranked defense for like three straight years.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: And suddenly, and I blame it on, I guess it's Mouse Davis out here for going to the run and shoot, you know, and um suddenly our the defense that we were running was a little antiquated, and they were putting us in awkward positions, and now you got mismatches.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: And I remember the head coach coming to me and saying, What's going on?
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: We were giving up like 40 a game, but we were still three and one.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: The offense was just scoring goals.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: And um, and I started to make excuses and I started to I I don't I tried to blame it on the kids.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Well, we do this and they're supposed to do this.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: And he says, It really doesn't matter what you know, it only matters what they know and what they can do.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: And I and this is we're mid-season.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: I stewed for like three days, you know.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: I I don't know if I got any work done other than just mad at the world, you know.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: Uh and then it was like, he's right.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: It doesn't matter what I know.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: It it only matters what they know, and it only matters what they're capable of doing.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: So having to that adjustment, that mental adjustment, um, of getting them to realize and getting myself to realize that it's my job to evaluate what we have and and put them in a spot where they can be successful.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: You know, and and and then allow them to be successful.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: You know, don't ask them to do too much, right?
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, but also don't expect less than what they're capable of doing, you know, and it's a fine line.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Um and I've I mean, knock on wood, I've been pretty fortunate so far, and the kids are responding, and hopefully we can keep it going.
- 14:43SPEAKER_05: And I think that you know, Moses Lake showed too that I don't care, you know, what size of high school you are or anything else.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: I mean, you're an injury or two away from being really depleted on the on, you know.
- 14:54SPEAKER_05: But then again, you got to go, okay, next man up.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: It's your opportunity.
- 14:58SPEAKER_05: This is not a deficit, this is an opportunity for you absolutely to come out here and and play.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the the the one thing that you never want to do, especially as a coach, is say, well, we can't.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: You know, it it's it's our job to try to find a way and give them a chance.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: You know, you may not be able to, right?
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: But you have to you have to find a way to give them a chance.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, I thought the kids did some really good things.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: The the score right before half in that game is the one that put the nail in a coffin.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: And and and I knew what it could be.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: Credit to them though.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: I mean, for choosing to okay, we're not gonna kick, we're gonna go for it.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: That and um, you know, we we made a couple of mistakes, you know, because a couple of the kids said, Well, I thought that they, you know, and I did.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: It's like, well, yeah, we live and learn.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: You know.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: Um and that game, uh you know, you learn most from your biggest dis defeats and mistakes.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: You know, if you don't, you're not paying attention.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: You know, and you're trying, like me, out you're trying to deny and blame somebody else.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, you you can't do that yet.
- 16:00SPEAKER_05: Well, I think you know, there's what is saying that you know, you you you only remember that you meant to drain the swamp when you're up to your hind end and alligators type of a thing.
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: Is that kind of a you were you looking for the response on Friday in in down at Yakima after a couple of big scores and suddenly we're down 12-0?
- 16:17SPEAKER_05: And it's like, did you look around and say, okay, all right, well, who are we gonna be right now?
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: That's exactly what we talked about.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: And and um, you know, again, we had that look in our eyes.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: And and you know, one of the things, and it's it's it's human nature, it's natural to do.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: Trying to fight that is the is the battle in there and the respect that you know I love what Jay does down at at Davis and he's in a tough situation, but there was no way that score should have been that.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: And and we talked about it all week.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: You cannot overlook anybody.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: Because on any given day, anything can happen.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: You have to show up and play.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: If you don't show up and play, if you go in already with the mindset, wow, this is gonna be a blowout or whatever, you you're gonna get kicked in the teeth.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: And and that's what happened.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: And and the eyes were big, and it was like, hey, look, we're here where we're at, and we just gotta go out and we've got to do what we're capable of doing from here on.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: You know, and we had a couple other moments in that game.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: But what I love about this group, and I and I've told them this, I said, we may do some dumb things at times, but the one thing I always see on film, and I hope the folks see when they're in the stands watching this defense plays, is these kids always run to the football.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: You know, they are somebody may make a mistake, but there's somebody sprinting to find the football.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: You know, and they've done a great job at that, not going, uh oh, and just letting it go.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: They they run somebody down, you know, or they give the attempt.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, that first touchdown, you saw four guys, five guys chasing them, running them down the sidelines.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: They didn't get there, but I love to see them running, you know, because that will get you out, as you said.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: If you make a mistake, make it going 100 miles an hour.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: And they do that.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: And I love that about the good.
- 18:09SPEAKER_05: So uh Cash Ratz, he's what, three interceptions on the season, something like that?
- 18:13SPEAKER_05: Uh pick six?
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: Was it an interception?
- 18:15SPEAKER_05: Was it a fumble?
- 18:16SPEAKER_05: How was that ruled?
- 18:17SPEAKER_05: Well the way I have always been around.
- 18:19SPEAKER_05: The quarterback gets hit, the ball goes in the air, and then kid comes down with it, boom.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: My understanding is that's an interception.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: If the ball is going to touch the ground, it's not a fumble.
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 18:28SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: That's that's the way I believe they rule them now.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Defensive coordinator.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Tell me about the the D-line coach is saying that's a that's a strip sack.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_05: Everybody's trying to get theirs.
- 18:42SPEAKER_05: Tell me about Cash.
- 18:43SPEAKER_05: He's gonna be coming in here next.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Um, really intelligent.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: You know, uh at the beginning of the season, see, I'm one of those guys that believes in playing one side of the football.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: And it's because it's the world I was in, you know, even though growing up I played, you played both ways.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: I get it.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: I understand that mentality.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: But I've also believed that your body only has so many hits.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: Um we saw it at the collegiate level.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: We used to work really hard to make sure that the players only got like 50 to 55 snaps a game.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Now, if it was a big game, sometimes they were gonna get more.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: But if we could control the number of hits that their body took, you'll see that result in games eight, nine, and ten.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: Um I I wanted that ability, and coach wasn't sure, you know, because there were some guys apparently who started on defense last year that aren't starting on defense right now.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: And and part of it was because I the mentality I was, bro, you you take kids, you put them in a place they can be successful, and it's your job to coach them up, sure, right?
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: And allow them to be successful.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: And and Cash was one of those kids that was the backup early, just like Matt Wilson was the backup early, you know.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: But the the the strain, because I'm not one of those, we don't just line up in the same thing every single, I don't know if you've watched us, you realize we're not gonna line up in the same formation, same defensive formation, and we're gonna live and die with it, right?
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: Because that's not the world I came from, you know, because if you do that, somebody's gonna pick you apart on the other side.
- 20:23SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna give you different looks and we're gonna make things difficult on you based on what I think you like to do.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: You know, and and trust me, my hates me because I I put I put 50 to 60 hours a week in every week, even now, coach of football.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: When I was doing it at the collegiate level, it was 80 to 90.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, watching film on a consistent basis, finding out what is it that you do and you do well, and what do I gotta stop?
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: What I you know, it and the the idea is to make somebody do something they don't want to do, you know, make them be uncomfortable, right?
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: And if they're good enough to beat you being uncomfortable, well then God bless them, they're good enough to beat you.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: Um so we spent a lot of time doing that, and I spent a lot of time with the kids coaching them, this is what they like to do, right?
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: And this is what we have to do to stop them.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: And I've always believed if I can have a kid every day of the week and he can practice every single day doing the things he's supposed to do, that we can line up and play just about anybody.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, and and and again, that's my own confidence in myself, my confidence in kids.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 21:30SPEAKER_05: I I think that what I'm hearing too from the players is that it has freed them up to not have to think so much, is that repetition is like, I know what I'm doing.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: Well, they think, you know, and and and cash is one of those kids, and I apologize, I get back to Cash.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Cash is one of those kids who was really smart, you know, but he he's he's not the same, and I hate to say it, he's athletically, he's not the same tier as a Chase, as a as a Liam, as a Micah, as a Griff.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: He was just That went, but he was good, he was good enough to play, and he was really smart, which in the defense, you know, I I told the players first time I met him, I said, if you're the dumb jock, you can't play for me because I can't play with dumb jocks.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: You have to be intelligent, you have to listen, you have to be willing to learn, and you have to apply it.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: And and Cass jumped out to me really early and trying to convince him that don't go be a backup wide receiver.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Come over here and be a starting safety, yeah, right, and and control and talk to this defense.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: In the beginning, I don't think he was sold until it started to happen for him.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: You know, and and and again, that just goes back to what I think my job as a coach is is to find kids, put them in a spot where they can be successful, and let them go by.
- 22:48SPEAKER_05: It's it's happening so far for Star Cash.
- 22:50SPEAKER_05: A lot of a lot of the guys used to go down that.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: Well, coach, this is for you.
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: Little uh thank you from Weinstein Beverage, Pepsi Zero there.
- 22:58SPEAKER_05: Um appreciate you joining us, and uh best of luck the rest of the season.
- 23:01SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 23:02SPEAKER_05: Biggest thing is keep everybody healthy.
- 23:03SPEAKER_05: Oh god, you got that right.
- 23:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Jay Foster joining us here.
- 23:06SPEAKER_05: We'll take a break on the Winanch Panther Podcast.
- 23:08SPEAKER_05: Come back with Cash Schratz from the defensive backfield.
- 23:11SPEAKER_03: He's coming up next here on the Panther Pod.
- 23:51SPEAKER_05: We have the man that we talked about, Cash Ranson joining us now.
- 23:54SPEAKER_05: He's uh free safety, strong safety, which are you?
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: Uh I don't know.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: We have we have our other safety.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: He's called free safety, but our other safety that I play is called Hero, so.
- 24:03SPEAKER_05: Hero?
- 24:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 24:04SPEAKER_05: Wow, that's a big label to have.
- 24:06SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 24:07SPEAKER_05: Do you feel pressure?
- 24:08SPEAKER_05: Nah.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: No pressure.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, I've had a few game ceiling picks.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Yes, you have.
- 24:15SPEAKER_05: Yes, you have.
- 24:16SPEAKER_05: Pick six.
- 24:17SPEAKER_05: Now, I was just talking with the coach about that.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: He we it's a pick six.
- 24:21SPEAKER_05: He said it's interception.
- 24:22SPEAKER_05: It's interception.
- 24:22SPEAKER_05: Now, I talked to Panny O2, I talked to some of the other guys.
- 24:25SPEAKER_05: They say it's a fumble.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: That's not a fumble.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: It didn't hit the ground.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: It went in the air.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: You talked back in the throwing motion.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: I'm saying I mean, I want my three picks on the season.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: Because you had did you have two down in California?
- 24:37SPEAKER_05: I had one in California.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: One in California.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: One in Lake Washington.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: There we go.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: And one, if you ask me, South Kitts at Holmes.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's right.
- 24:44SPEAKER_05: That's the pick six.
- 24:45SPEAKER_05: The pick six, right.
- 24:46SPEAKER_05: 27 yards.
- 24:47SPEAKER_05: Mm-hmm.
- 24:49SPEAKER_05: Is that the ultimate for a defensive back?
- 24:51unknown: Yeah.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, right?
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: Ultimate would be like 99 yard pick six, but like pick six in general.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:59SPEAKER_05: Then you gotta worry about somebody catching you.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna get caught.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, if I get caught, he'd probably pull me over and be like, it's over for you.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: I can't believe you got caught.
- 25:10SPEAKER_05: Talk about last week, you get off the bus at Davis, and it looked like some of the guys didn't get off the bus.
- 25:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 25:16SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm joking, but I mean it probably shocked you guys.
- 25:19SPEAKER_05: Like, yeah, what?
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: This is not happening right now?
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: We got out there, of course.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: We knew Davis isn't a great football team, and I don't know, we stepped off the bus and it seemed like we were locked in in the locker room a little bit, but not on the bus, I guess.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Like we were joking around, and we got out there and it was four plays, two touchdowns from Davis.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: And I don't know, I think we lined up, but we weren't lined up in our heads.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: We were just Yeah.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: We were just going through the motions instead of playing football.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: On the first touchdown, we had both of our safeties lined up on the same side of the field and just one corner left to hang.
- 25:52SPEAKER_05: So that was that was rough.
- 25:54SPEAKER_05: I mean, it was this close to a pick six going the other way.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: That's why, I mean, I don't know if Foster talked about it, but you gotta go up upfield shoulder outside.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I can't blame it was Tommy.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: I can't blame Tommy for that, but the other one, we didn't get a play call out, and we didn't we should know what to run, just a quick base call, but that's a big dude that caught that ball.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Number five, big guy.
- 26:14SPEAKER_05: Big guy.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: He's their he's their guy.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: He's their dude for Davis.
- 26:17SPEAKER_05: You uh kept him in check other than that one play.
- 26:20SPEAKER_05: I mean, we didn't have much left to say.
- 26:22SPEAKER_05: No.
- 26:23SPEAKER_05: Uh is that more Panther football of what happened after the 12 points from your perspective?
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: I think it was closer, but it's not what we do.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: I think if you look at the like if you look at the just the box score, like the the score, 57-12 looks nice, but realistically, Davis isn't a team that we should give up points to as as a defense.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: And we also gave up 380 yards of total offense, which is a it's not a good look for us, because I mean, Sunny side, we play this week, and they're definitely a better team.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: And uh the week after that we have Battle of the Bridges and East Month's team that's gonna want to run the football.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: So we gotta be able to stop that and just what did you learn from Moses Lake?
- 27:05SPEAKER_05: I mean, that was that was tough.
- 27:06SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, you guys played him tight first half, second half, it's all the wheels fell off the apple cart.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: I think it's the most locked in we've been as a team, especially the defense.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: I feel like the defense had I mean you're down two starters.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: To start two starters, middle linebackers were really really big for run game.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: The end that we really needed there.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: But I mean it's not an excuse.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: We should still be able to play football.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: And we I think we came out physical as we have been, and we stopped them until they got the last second touchdown, and I think that kind of deflated us, and then we came out pretty flat.
- 27:40SPEAKER_05: And well, offense goes down, you get the ball on their territory, turn the ball over, and then it's like, oh boy, here we go.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: And it's like we we our jobs to create opportunities for them, right?
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: And their their job's to score, but we just have to build off each other and crazy.
- 27:55SPEAKER_05: I've not seen a running back other than eight-man football have 309 yards and four touchdowns in one game.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we had a lot of tackling next week.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: He's good.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's a great.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 28:05SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's not just okay, uh we we messed up or something like that.
- 28:09SPEAKER_05: I mean, you are facing a guy that's pretty good.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Elijah.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: Are you willing to give that or is that no, yeah, he's a great running back.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: I will say, me personally too, I missed a few tackles and we had a we had a very big problem with entry points.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: And the first touchdown they scored, the long run touchdown, I messed that up.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: I had a wrong entry angle.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:32SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: It's all the little things, especially when you play a good, a really good football team, you gotta be perfect to stay with them.
- 28:37SPEAKER_05: Your coach has talked about you switching from being a backup wide receiver to coming over and playing football on the defensive side.
- 28:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:45SPEAKER_05: How has that been for you?
- 28:46SPEAKER_05: How's that transition been?
- 28:48SPEAKER_05: Uh I mean you're playing every down on defense.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: It wasn't as crazy as I thought it would be, maybe.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: I last year I was I played JV both ways.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: I played I started at corner and wide receiver.
- 28:59SPEAKER_05: Which has been the case for Winanche for a long time.
- 29:02SPEAKER_05: I mean you guys didn't have a lot of bodies.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: But I last year I even I switched to safety a little bit at the end and played receiver and safety.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: And I don't know, I just I feel like I mean I like playing defense more, to be honest with you.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: I think it's more fun to be able to like be the dominant force and hold somebody to feel like they can't do anything.
- 29:20SPEAKER_05: So in your position back there as the hero, as you said, um it how much quarterback reading are you doing?
- 29:26SPEAKER_05: How much receiver reading are you doing?
- 29:28SPEAKER_05: How much is it a a play call?
- 29:30SPEAKER_05: Because a lot of people don't realize that you guys have play calls for the defense similar to what the offense is doing a play call, right?
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: So before our motor linebacker was more the quarterback of the defense, and he would call it out, and it's a lot of stuff like he would call it shift the D-line and all that.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: But after he went down, we had a lot we had a younger guy step up, like they all the linebackers shifted around pretty much so we could run it differently.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: And I'd say me and him have more split the responsibility for calling it, like being the quarterbacks.
- 30:01SPEAKER_05: And I don't know, it's just so when you say you're calling it, you're you're seeing okay, strong side over here, okay.
- 30:07SPEAKER_05: We need to shift this way.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: Our left right is rip Liz.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: So offset to the field sides where I'm at on the wider side of the field, everybody's got to shift over.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: We got to get the play call and make sure that's the right.
- 30:18SPEAKER_05: So that terminology for those that don't realize, so rip or liz, right or left.
- 30:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 30:22SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 30:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 30:22SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 30:23SPEAKER_05: Liz left.
- 30:23SPEAKER_05: But it's easier for you to say rip or liz than right or left.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: Right, left.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, I you could say right or left, but you we use right-left because like, for example, if we have like a pull where they go to towards the running back, we say left-left, and that means they're going, they're gonna take their side left, right?
- 30:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_05: Uh I know you got Sunnyside this week, you've got East Mont next week.
- 30:43SPEAKER_05: That obviously is your next big matchup.
- 30:46SPEAKER_05: How do you not overlook the Grizzlies?
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: Um, to be honest, I've never overlooked Sunnyside.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: I remember sophomore year I'd played corn I played in a game at corner against Sunnyside, and I gave up a touchdown.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: They have they always have good athletes, skill positions-wise, at least.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: And their quarterback, I mean, I I bet Foster talked about it.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: He's one of the probably top three quarterbacks in our league.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: He's he can throw the ball, he can run, he's a good athlete.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: I think we have really good linemen on the defense.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: I think that if they keep him in the box, then it should be fine for us, and we shouldn't have a problem.
- 31:18SPEAKER_05: So no looking pass, no looking pass, getting the battle of the bridge.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: I think we did that one bit last week, even we looked past sunny side from last week too, just like, oh, we want to play East Mont, whatever.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: Like, even talking about what jersey combos we're looking forward to wearing that game.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: It's like you just can't do that.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: You can't disrespect your opponent.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: You gotta stay locked on what's ahead of you.
- 31:38SPEAKER_05: What else do you like to do?
- 31:40SPEAKER_05: Do you play any other sports?
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: Uh I do track in the spring.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 31:43SPEAKER_05: Uh what are your events?
- 31:45SPEAKER_05: Sprints.
- 31:45SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: 100 four by one.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: I didn't compete last season because I was injured, but I mean it's still funny.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: Set the plan?
- 31:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 31:51SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 31:52SPEAKER_05: What about your free time?
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: Free time?
- 31:55SPEAKER_05: Not that you have much.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: No, I mean football is a lot, but I I like to go to the gym still, even during football.
- 32:00SPEAKER_05: I like to Do you have to temper that a little bit?
- 32:03SPEAKER_05: You can't you can't work as hard because you're you're doing practice and then you got games on Fridays and Well, usually Mondays we have film before school almost every day.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: And so on Mondays when it's late start, we usually lift before, but I can't make it Monday morning, so I usually lift on Sunday nights.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: And then I'll go to film in the morning and I have to miss lifts.
- 32:21SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 32:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 32:22SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 32:23SPEAKER_05: Um so aside lifting, I mean any other pastimes you like?
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: I like to hang out with friends.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: I like to go fishing.
- 32:30SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: I like I mean, I just like outdoors.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: I like hiking, camping.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 32:34SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 32:34SPEAKER_05: Kind of goes out the window during the season, though.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: It gets a little chillier out here.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: I stopped skiing a while ago, so I like to bundle up at home, I guess.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:42SPEAKER_05: Uh what about school?
- 32:43SPEAKER_05: What's your favorite subject in school?
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: Um favorite subject is probably math.
- 32:47unknown: Okay.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: Because it comes easy.
- 32:48SPEAKER_05: So Math comes easy for you.
- 32:50SPEAKER_05: There's a lot of people going, yeah, good for you.
- 32:52SPEAKER_05: Doesn't come easy for me.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: But then they're like, but then I tell them like, well, I can't write essays, so it's it balances out.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: See?
- 32:59SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 32:59SPEAKER_05: But you have to write essays, right?
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I get through it.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: I get through it.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: I get through it.
- 33:07SPEAKER_05: Can you approach an essay from a mathematical stance?
- 33:10SPEAKER_05: Do you go, oh, you you know what?
- 33:12SPEAKER_05: This isn't so bad.
- 33:12SPEAKER_05: I need 400 words here.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: The word count, it's just sentence by sentence, just figuring out how many I got down.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: I'm like, okay, what's a bigger word I can what's a bigger synonym I can put in?
- 33:22SPEAKER_05: See, there you go.
- 33:23SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 33:24SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 33:24SPEAKER_05: Or how many commas can you?
- 33:25SPEAKER_05: Do you do you use a thesaurus or is it all the phone?
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Now you or are you asking, yeah, I hate, you know, what's another word for the Yeah, I just I'll just go on Google and be like synonym for this, that, and it'll be like I'd be like bigger words.
- 33:35SPEAKER_05: At least you know what a cinnamon or cinnamon synonym?
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:39SPEAKER_05: Synonym.
- 33:40SPEAKER_05: Synonin.
- 33:40SPEAKER_05: Cinnonin.
- 33:41SPEAKER_05: Synonym.
- 33:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:43SPEAKER_05: There it is.
- 33:43SPEAKER_05: I sound like George Bush suddenly.
- 33:45SPEAKER_05: Uh what do you hope to do after school?
- 33:48SPEAKER_05: What do you want what do you want to um go into?
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go to a university.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: I wanna I don't know.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: I wanna either I wanna go into finance, like business finance.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: Numbers somewhere, yeah, something like that.
- 33:59SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: A lot of my family members my family have always had a lot of businesses, and my aunt owns her own financial advising like firm, and she told me I could intern there.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Well, there you go.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: That'll be nice.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, my my kind of an inn.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, my uncle, my mom's cousin, unc uncle, he works there, and I mean he makes a crap load of money.
- 34:18SPEAKER_05: So we're gonna see a millionaire cash rats down the roads.
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: I'll come back.
- 34:21SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 34:21SPEAKER_05: You'll be a hero of a different kind?
- 34:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:24SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 34:24SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 34:24SPEAKER_05: Nickname.
- 34:25SPEAKER_05: I ask everybody this.
- 34:26SPEAKER_05: Do you have a nickname?
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: Uh I don't I mean cash.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: That's pretty good to start with.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, Mitch says cash money, but I feel like that's a given sometimes.
- 34:35SPEAKER_05: Uh-huh.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: That's the only one I can really think of.
- 34:38SPEAKER_05: Is it is when you make that pick six, is it a cash exchange?
- 34:40SPEAKER_05: Is it you like that?
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: I like that.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 34:44SPEAKER_05: Nothing else?
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: No.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Sometimes I get called cash nasty.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: Cash nasty?
- 34:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:50SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 34:51SPEAKER_05: But not too often.
- 34:52SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 34:53SPEAKER_05: I hope that's a football reference.
- 34:54SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 34:55SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 34:56SPEAKER_05: Just laying a lick on somebody.
- 34:58SPEAKER_05: Well, best of luck the rest of the season.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: Good luck this week against Sunnyside.
- 35:01SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 35:01SPEAKER_05: And of course, East Mont.
- 35:03SPEAKER_05: We'll think about that next week.
- 35:04SPEAKER_05: Yes, sir.
- 35:05SPEAKER_05: We'll worry about that later.
- 35:06SPEAKER_05: And uh yeah, it'd be awesome to see a home playoff game.
- 35:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:10SPEAKER_05: And sure we'll go put the Panthers in.
- 35:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 35:13SPEAKER_05: That would be awesome.
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: Congratulations.
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 35:16SPEAKER_05: Thank you for doing this.
- 35:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, of course.
- 35:17SPEAKER_05: Appreciate it.
- 35:17SPEAKER_05: Cash Schratz joining us here on the Winanche Panther podcast.
- 35:20SPEAKER_05: We'll take a break and come back.
- 35:21SPEAKER_05: Coming up, we're going to talk with uh a couple of the school board members, including their president, about the big bond that is happening to uh try to help things around here at Winanchee High School and many other places in the district.
- 35:33SPEAKER_05: We'll do that as we come back.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: But first, Cash, this is for you, a Pepsi Zero.
- 35:37SPEAKER_05: All the fun, none of the calories.
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: So there you go, buddy.
- 35:40SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 35:41SPEAKER_05: All right, we'll come back after a word from Les Schwab and TGR Inc.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: our sponsors of the podcast.
- 36:21SPEAKER_05: We have a couple of guests joining us now from the Winanchee School Board.
- 36:24SPEAKER_05: We have uh Julie Norton and we have Tucker Jackson.
- 36:28SPEAKER_05: Julie on the board and Tucker president, right?
- 36:30SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 36:30SPEAKER_05: I get that right?
- 36:31SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 36:31SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 36:32SPEAKER_05: Thank you for doing this.
- 36:33SPEAKER_05: Appreciate it.
- 36:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 36:34SPEAKER_05: Um we're going to talk about issues in this building and the rest of the district and what's going on.
- 36:40SPEAKER_05: I I just wanted, for example, where of course the big bond is coming up and a lot of people talking about that.
- 36:47SPEAKER_05: I was just looking at it.
- 36:48SPEAKER_05: And of course, I come at all angles from a sports perspective.
- 36:52SPEAKER_05: I was just down at at Eisenhower High School on Friday, uh broadcasting the Wenatchee and and Davis football game.
- 36:59SPEAKER_05: And first of all, I arrived on their campus and I'm like, oh my gosh, this is amazing.
- 37:04SPEAKER_05: Have you guys ever seen Eisenhower High School?
- 37:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah, actually, my my daughter uh was a senior athlete last year for Wenatchee.
- 37:10SPEAKER_07: So she kids.
- 37:11SPEAKER_07: So you've been there.
- 37:11SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so I've been there, and I know my kids always go to these schools and tell me how fabulous they are and how disappointed they are that the school doesn't look like it.
- 37:18SPEAKER_05: Well, and you know, and that's perspective, right?
- 37:20SPEAKER_05: Everything's about perspective.
- 37:21SPEAKER_05: It's like, okay, well, how is this different than anywhere else?
- 37:24SPEAKER_05: Well, if you don't travel and you don't go, uh it's amazing.
- 37:27SPEAKER_05: Eisenhower High School, by the way, was remodeled in 2014.
- 37:30SPEAKER_05: Uh, because I thought, man, this looks brand new.
- 37:32SPEAKER_05: Well, not quite new, but very much newer than what we're talking about here.
- 37:36SPEAKER_05: Davis was remodeled in 2015.
- 37:38SPEAKER_05: West Valley was a brand new school that they built in 2009.
- 37:42SPEAKER_05: Sunnyside remodeled in 2011.
- 37:45SPEAKER_05: Eastmont remodeled in 2014.
- 37:47SPEAKER_05: Now, Moses Lake, it's been a while.
- 37:50SPEAKER_05: 1997, the last time Moses Lake had any type of development done on their school.
- 37:54SPEAKER_05: And Wenanchee built in 1972.
- 37:57SPEAKER_05: Uh, back in 2006, there was uh a bond that went through to replace the boiler.
- 38:02SPEAKER_05: If uh and I could be wrong on this, but this is what I found.
- 38:05SPEAKER_05: Uh boiler replacement, some light upgrades, and science lab remodel.
- 38:10SPEAKER_05: That was it, and that's the last that's happened here as far as any capital improvements, right?
- 38:15SPEAKER_05: Well, I think we did the administrate offices.
- 38:18SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 38:18SPEAKER_05: For the district.
- 38:20SPEAKER_05: No, no, for here.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: For the high school.
- 38:22SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 38:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay.
- 38:23SPEAKER_07: At some period that new commons was built, but I don't know.
- 38:25SPEAKER_07: It might have been part of that science remodel.
- 38:27SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 38:28SPEAKER_05: So what I'm saying is, comparatively speaking, there's not been a lot done here at Winanchee High School.
- 38:34SPEAKER_05: There has been a couple of things done with some of the elementary schools, but I mean it's been a long time since something's been addressed here and it's way overdue.
- 38:41SPEAKER_05: Is that right?
- 38:42SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 38:43SPEAKER_07: Very, very way overdue.
- 38:44SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 38:45SPEAKER_05: So from your perspective, being on the school board, and not that you've been around since 72 when all of this was built and and tried to, you know, imagine the future, like, you know, our founders of our country that that put together a document 250 years ago.
- 38:58SPEAKER_05: You build a high school in 1972, you don't know what's going to happen.
- 39:01SPEAKER_05: If you hope you prepare for the future, but when not a lot is done to the high school since then, if you've got, what, 2,000 students here or something like that, that's difficult, isn't it?
- 39:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 39:11SPEAKER_04: Well, I and I think I I was on the facilities committee meeting or uh committee and then part of the design advisory committee, and both of those just kind of really highlighted all the different things that needed to be fixed or were failing.
- 39:27SPEAKER_04: And so if you look at we have all the plumbing through the concrete floors.
- 39:30SPEAKER_04: So you can't update any plumbing because you have to jackhammer the floors out.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: So you don't have to.
- 39:35SPEAKER_05: And when let's see, did the school year start it?
- 39:37SPEAKER_05: There was a lot of the bathrooms here that weren't even working.
- 39:40SPEAKER_05: Or was that last year?
- 39:41SPEAKER_05: Maybe that last last year.
- 39:43SPEAKER_04: The operations team did a great job of remodeling the a lot of the bathrooms.
- 39:47SPEAKER_05: For what they could do, correct.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: Three of the five compressors went out the day before school started at the high school.
- 39:54SPEAKER_04: And you know, you're you're talking sports, right?
- 39:56SPEAKER_05: Like there's no AC in the gyms.
- 39:58SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 39:59SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: And that's what I somebody was asking me, well, what's it what's it like at the high school?
- 40:03SPEAKER_05: Because that's another thing.
- 40:05SPEAKER_05: The general public can't come in here.
- 40:08SPEAKER_05: You you guys had a tour, I know, but the general public can't walk in here and sit in a classroom for a day and see what it's like to be a student at Winanchee High School.
- 40:16SPEAKER_05: And so somebody was asking me, I said, well, I'll tell you what, go to a volleyball game in the fall and you're gonna roast.
- 40:21SPEAKER_05: Go to a basketball game in the wintertime in February, you're gonna freeze to death.
- 40:25SPEAKER_05: Uh there's just the air is just not moving in these buildings, in this building.
- 40:29SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 40:29SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and the gyms itself, as far as I am understand, doesn't have air conditioning at all, which is totally unique to any sports facility now.
- 40:35SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 40:36SPEAKER_07: So I mean it's every once in a while somebody will say, Well, did they turn the heat on or the air off on purpose to make it so hot to pass this bond?
- 40:44SPEAKER_07: No, this is not a good thing.
- 40:46SPEAKER_07: No, this is this is it.
- 40:47SPEAKER_05: Wait a minute, our kids have to play in there too.
- 40:49SPEAKER_07: Right, right.
- 40:50SPEAKER_07: So no, this is this is not a joke.
- 40:52SPEAKER_07: This is not, you know, gaming the the bond.
- 40:54SPEAKER_07: This is this is the the facility.
- 40:56SPEAKER_07: And if you're that uncomfortable in a in a competitive environment, imagine trying to sit there eight hours a day in class.
- 41:02SPEAKER_07: Because the classrooms will will have the similar conditions in some areas.
- 41:05SPEAKER_05: Aaron Powell So you guys came on the board.
- 41:07SPEAKER_05: This has been something that's needed to be addressed for a long time.
- 41:10SPEAKER_05: So you knew that was gonna be on your plate, right?
- 41:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, not the most advantageous one of thing to have to do, but it's part of the deal, right?
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: Aaron Ross Powell, Jr.
- 41:17SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 41:17SPEAKER_07: So I actually started on the board in 2019 and we were just starting conversations about rerunning the bond that had just failed, I believe, in 2018.
- 41:26SPEAKER_07: And then COVID hit, so we had to completely shut down that conversation.
- 41:30SPEAKER_07: So we knew it was gonna come back up.
- 41:32SPEAKER_07: And then the climate now for whether there was gonna be legislative support to help make this a more favorable climate for bonds was kind of out there, and so we were kind of what is the right timing?
- 41:42SPEAKER_07: What is but we knew it was coming back up when we got school back in session and whatnot.
- 41:47SPEAKER_07: And you know, we didn't get the state support that we wanted in terms of reducing the threshold percentages to pass bonds.
- 41:53SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 41:53SPEAKER_07: I per personally thought we were gonna be looking at a capital levy, but the facilities committee and the research we did made it perfectly clear that there's just too much.
- 42:01SPEAKER_07: So the bond really had to be back on the table.
- 42:04SPEAKER_07: And so this is where we're at.
- 42:06SPEAKER_05: What are the monies we're talking about for this?
- 42:09SPEAKER_04: Well yeah, so the state matching funds um called SCAP funds, we're at currently at 86 million.
- 42:17SPEAKER_04: And um if we don't pass it in November, that drops to 66 million just based on the calculations the state does.
- 42:26SPEAKER_04: The building itself is I think it's 275?
- 42:31SPEAKER_04: That's the that's the bond amount.
- 42:33SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 42:33SPEAKER_05: I am not it's like two forty for the building itself, I think, or something.
- 42:36SPEAKER_05: The majority of it is building.
- 42:38SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah, it was like fifty-eight million is for the HVAC systems in the other schools.
- 42:42SPEAKER_07: And the in the system is and the remaining yeah, and the remaining amount, so 240-ish is for or 230 or something.
- 42:49SPEAKER_07: I my math is not mathing.
- 42:50SPEAKER_07: Uh that's okay.
- 42:52SPEAKER_07: But uh the remainder would be for the the building and just the substantial improvements that are needed.
- 42:57SPEAKER_05: Now, in the design, you talk about the facilities.
- 43:00SPEAKER_05: Uh what I heard I saw something about maybe expanding on the backside of the high school, you know, the parking lot there, that type of thing, as far as new classrooms are concerned.
- 43:09SPEAKER_05: What what are we what are we talking about?
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: So the idea was is it's a pretty substantial additional cost to remodel.
- 43:18SPEAKER_04: But what are you gonna do with your kids for three years if they're not in the building?
- 43:23SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 43:23SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: Because you're kicking them out, you're stomping the building, and then you're building a new one.
- 43:27SPEAKER_05: And so as we saw across the river with the Eastwont, they had to go to the junior high schools and the j the junior high and and while the high school is getting revamped.
- 43:35SPEAKER_05: 1900 kids are a lot of kids.
- 43:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 43:38SPEAKER_04: And so um we looked at a different way of building in phases.
- 43:43SPEAKER_04: And so the the current student parking lot would be where you'd build the classrooms, two story classrooms to start.
- 43:49SPEAKER_04: And then you can move kids into those classrooms and then work on the rest of the main infrastructure.
- 43:56SPEAKER_04: Um and so that also allows us to save.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: Um the the physical box of the auditorium, which is the biggest auditorium in five counties.
- 44:07SPEAKER_04: Like twice almost twice the size of the pack.
- 44:09SPEAKER_04: And keep the gyms and the pool.
- 44:12SPEAKER_04: And I've been on several tours where people are like, We have a pool?
- 44:14SPEAKER_04: I was like, didn't you go to school here?
- 44:17SPEAKER_04: And they're like, well, yeah.
- 44:18SPEAKER_04: You didn't smell the chlorine?
- 44:19SPEAKER_04: I didn't know we had a pool.
- 44:20SPEAKER_04: I was like, that says a lot about your gym.
- 44:23SPEAKER_04: The locker rooms you can't smell the chlorine.
- 44:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:25SPEAKER_04: But um but yeah, so we're able to save like twenty to thirty million dollars just by keeping those boxes and then renovating them to be ADA compliant.
- 44:35SPEAKER_04: Those those kind of things add HVAC to the gyms.
- 44:40SPEAKER_05: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 44:40SPEAKER_05: Well, and the thing about this is that as anybody who's been around even just a kitchen remodel, just because you wait a few years doesn't mean the price is gonna go down.
- 44:49SPEAKER_05: It's only going to go up.
- 44:51SPEAKER_05: The cost of everything continues to climb, so the longer we wait to do this after what happened in 2014, you know, okay, well, it we're we're putting this on to the future.
- 45:02SPEAKER_05: It's gotta get done eventually, and by waiting, it's not gonna get any cheaper.
- 45:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it it exactly.
- 45:08SPEAKER_07: It just keeps getting more expensive to um because construction costs go up.
- 45:12SPEAKER_07: Um the the use of general funds to make remedial impair repairs still happens.
- 45:18SPEAKER_07: So we're we're losing taxpayer resources on just keeping the building limping along for multiple years.
- 45:24SPEAKER_07: So at some point you've just got to pull off the band-aid and say we need to invest significantly in a full remodel and get it done right so that we're using our taxpayer money for the general purpose of education.
- 45:38SPEAKER_05: Aaron Powell Now, of course, we're sitting in the high school right now.
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: This is also very impactful for the elementary schools.
- 45:45SPEAKER_05: Um I just heard the radio commercial coming here about a youngster that was saying, who man, it's really hot.
- 45:51SPEAKER_05: Um the HVAC systems, the the whatever is is there at the at the elementary schools also dilapidated and needs to be fixed, or what what's going on there?
- 46:01SPEAKER_05: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 46:01SPEAKER_04: So it's four elementary schools, all three middle schools.
- 46:04SPEAKER_04: Last year the Orchard AC went out and it was 85 degrees in the classrooms.
- 46:08SPEAKER_04: They canceled school, they got an AC unit that's used for fruit packing uh storage, and like we're pumping in cold air, and that's how they're running school.
- 46:19SPEAKER_05: So Which is also not energy efficient, I don't imagine.
- 46:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean no way of cheap power, but yeah.
- 46:24SPEAKER_05: At some point though, right?
- 46:26SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 46:26SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 46:26SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it's not energy efficient.
- 46:28SPEAKER_07: It m it um impacts this kid's school schedule because they could only go, you had one school that was operating half days or no days.
- 46:36SPEAKER_07: Um so it just puts them at a disadvantage compared to other schools in the district, and then it's money that we shouldn't be have to spend to make that work.
- 46:43SPEAKER_07: So let's spend the money on the bond, get it fixed so we can go a couple years without how does that work financially?
- 46:50SPEAKER_05: Because you have the maintenance and operation of the schools, you know, that's that's making sure that everything's running.
- 46:56SPEAKER_05: Uh I guess what maintenance and operation levies are for learning and bonds are for buildings, right?
- 47:01SPEAKER_05: So you don't have a bond that's sitting there to go, oh, we could just take money out of that and get that uh bring that in that chilling unit from an orchard, you know.
- 47:10SPEAKER_07: Trevor Burrus Correct.
- 47:10SPEAKER_07: Uh the last couple of years we've had to put money from our general fund into our capital fund so that we would have money set aside to to do some of these projects.
- 47:20SPEAKER_07: And so ideally, if everything's working fantastically, we don't need to use that money on capital improvements.
- 47:26SPEAKER_07: Or we can if we have the money for a bond and can make all these substantial improvements, maybe we can use now the capital improvement money that we would have used on replacing the turf in the apple bowl, because these bonds aren't going to cover a lot of the athletic facilities.
- 47:40SPEAKER_07: And so we still need, we're looking at probably turf that needs to be re-replaced in the apple bowl at some point soon.
- 47:46SPEAKER_07: So we have a lot of other needs that that we need money for.
- 47:51SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 47:51SPEAKER_04: But when our HVAC units at the high school go out every year, we're putting that money toward you know, basically throwing good money after bad, right?
- 47:58SPEAKER_05: Like we're not robbing Peter to pay Paul type of a thing.
- 48:01SPEAKER_05: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 48:01SPEAKER_07: And it doesn't make sense to me that we have some of the cheapest power in the nation, but our high school runs on natural gas.
- 48:06SPEAKER_07: And to replace that is not an easy, it's not any kind of easy fix.
- 48:11SPEAKER_07: It's a s significant improvement.
- 48:12SPEAKER_07: So we're again, we're spending taxpayer money on bills that could be so much less.
- 48:17SPEAKER_07: Sure.
- 48:18SPEAKER_07: So there's a lot of savings.
- 48:19SPEAKER_05: Well, and the bottom line here, we're supposed to be teaching kids, right?
- 48:22SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 48:23SPEAKER_05: And in order to do that, you need a building in which you can do that effectively.
- 48:27SPEAKER_05: And it doesn't sound like there's a lot of effective places to do that if A, they're cramped, B, there's no air circulating there, so the kids are either falling asleep or freezing to death.
- 48:37SPEAKER_05: I mean, just the basics.
- 48:39SPEAKER_05: And then also trying to recruit teachers and get quality educators in here.
- 48:43SPEAKER_05: I imagine if there's that reputation about, well, Winanchee doesn't, you know, doesn't have the best facilities in the world, it's not a good way to try to draw people here, is it?
- 48:54SPEAKER_04: Aaron Powell Well, and then skilled professionals outside of that, right?
- 48:56SPEAKER_04: Like there's a lot of it's but it's more than just the teachers.
- 48:59SPEAKER_04: It's a lot of people who are saying, what kind of community is that?
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: And if you support your schools, you're generally going to support your other aspects of the community that people want to be a part of.
- 49:09SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 49:09SPEAKER_07: Trevor Burrus, Jr.: Yeah, I mean it's hard to recruit a teacher when you say, hey, you you may or may not have a classroom with four walls.
- 49:14SPEAKER_07: Uh you will not have windows, you may or may not have ceiling tiles.
- 49:18SPEAKER_07: I mean, so it's it's not an attractive space for a lot of teachers.
- 49:21SPEAKER_07: And when you think uh we have the ability to grow CTE in some of these college classrooms that require, you know, maybe contracts with other professionals, but we either don't have facilities, we don't have the electrical capacity in some areas to bring in some of these new um, you know, new new teaching projects or or whatnot, because our electrical system is tapped out.
- 49:41SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 49:42SPEAKER_07: And so in just not having the space, not having facilities that we can bring these up make these options available is is a downside.
- 49:52SPEAKER_05: How impactful is it, beneficial, is it, I imagine, quite a bit to have these tours to have people come in and see the buildings.
- 50:00SPEAKER_04: I've I've been on like five or six now.
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: And the number of people who say I went on the class of 74 tour and they said, wow, it's hasn't changed.
- 50:10SPEAKER_04: I was like, that's I mean, that's a an endorsement on like for the bond, right?
- 50:14SPEAKER_05: You were you graduated two years after this building was built and you're telling me Oh, it hasn't changed a bit.
- 50:19SPEAKER_04: And uh I mean maybe there's just some like nostalgia there.
- 50:23SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 50:23SPEAKER_04: But there were there are enough people, like I said, I didn't know we had a pool.
- 50:26SPEAKER_04: I didn't know that that we why can't you go from here to here?
- 50:30SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, what do you mean there's 112 different uh doors, exterior doors?
- 50:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 50:36SPEAKER_04: Just those different things that people are like safety issue there.
- 50:39SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 50:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 50:40SPEAKER_04: Like horrified.
- 50:41SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I knew, you know, I supported the bond.
- 50:43SPEAKER_07: I knew we needed a bond.
- 50:44SPEAKER_07: I knew conditions were not ideal.
- 50:46SPEAKER_07: And I had I have two students that have gone through here, or one that's going through here, and one more that is gonna go through here.
- 50:52SPEAKER_07: And so I've heard the rumors and how bad it is.
- 50:55SPEAKER_07: I took that facilities tour and was actually surprised at how bad it was.
- 51:01SPEAKER_07: And and part of the things that I never realized were the grade that the school is built on.
- 51:06SPEAKER_07: It's a two or three-story grade in our halls, which means our ADA ramps are treacherous in some cases.
- 51:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's just I mean, not you were uh as as uh a lot of the tourists have said, is we are grandfathered in a lot of compliance.
- 51:21SPEAKER_04: I'm sure yeah.
- 51:22SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so it's just things like that that that I knew were there.
- 51:25SPEAKER_07: I knew you know we had plumbing issues, I knew, but to see it and to see pipes that are now coming out of the concrete because we can't put them back into the concrete to make them accessible, to see tiles falling off the walls, to see how small our kitchen is compared to what it should be for the amount of meals it services.
- 51:42SPEAKER_07: The fact that we have four or five areas now in the school that we have to serve students lunches in just to be able to serve what we can, it's it's so not ideal.
- 51:51SPEAKER_07: And it's I I want the people who are asking, is it really that bad to come in and do these tours?
- 51:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, definitely.
- 51:58SPEAKER_05: Um we uh of course I can't ask you or you can't as as board members, you can't say, hey, vote yes, vote no type of thing.
- 52:08SPEAKER_05: Um but important for people to understand.
- 52:11SPEAKER_05: Now, also, as far as I understand, uh, you know, everybody's worried about their taxes, worried about property taxes and things like that.
- 52:18SPEAKER_05: There's money coming off while this would come on.
- 52:21SPEAKER_05: Is that correct in in that?
- 52:24SPEAKER_07: So, yeah.
- 52:25SPEAKER_07: So we are retiring a bond.
- 52:26SPEAKER_07: The district is retiring a bond in about 2033.
- 52:30SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 52:30SPEAKER_07: Will be our last payment on the bond that was done to upgrade the elementary schools.
- 52:36SPEAKER_07: So that will be off the rolls.
- 52:38SPEAKER_07: And so and and what they're proposing is a phased purchase of the bonds.
- 52:43SPEAKER_07: So it's it's you the the voters would approve a fixed amount, but we can our our financial professionals can target when they actually buy those bonds.
- 52:53SPEAKER_07: And so it will spread out the the actual when it hits your tax rolls through that process.
- 53:00SPEAKER_07: So yeah, there will be one rolling off in 2033.
- 53:03SPEAKER_07: Um so this would potentially be the only bond on the record, and then we'll continually, you know, be every six years trying to go after the the learning levies.
- 53:12SPEAKER_05: So with this election coming up, it's a 40 percent minimal turnout, right?
- 53:15SPEAKER_05: You need 40 percent or more to turn out to validate the vote, and then you need a 60 percent plus one, right?
- 53:21SPEAKER_05: Is that how that works as far as the the passage is concerned?
- 53:25SPEAKER_05: Um we we should also not neglect the fact that despite all that, it's incredible the students that continue to get churned out of the Winanchee School District that come out of this high school, that do these amazing things, both students, student athletes, everything else.
- 53:39SPEAKER_05: I mean, a track team that wins awards all over the place and this track out here is ridiculous.
- 53:43SPEAKER_05: Uh I don't even trust I'm an old duffer and I don't trust walking around on that thing, and they're competing on that thing and and practicing and doing all these things.
- 53:52SPEAKER_05: That's also part of this bond measure, too, is to replace that track, right?
- 53:55SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 53:56SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 53:56SPEAKER_07: So we do have the funds available that would would help with this piece of, you know, this parcel, because there will be such substantial, you know, improvements to, you know, building the new school will impact so much of the space itself.
- 54:09SPEAKER_07: So the tennis courts and the which are currently condemned, the tennis courts and the track would be redone and the and the C team baseball would be redone because it's all part of this campus.
- 54:21SPEAKER_07: What still would be left out is the Apple Bowl.
- 54:24SPEAKER_07: And so if we could have additional capital funds that we could use, at some point we know we're gonna need some remedial repairs.
- 54:31SPEAKER_05: Well, and for anybody that I I was just uh talking to one of one of the coaches here the other day about the Apple Bowl and and how busy that facility is.
- 54:39SPEAKER_05: I know that it was great when they remodeled it and put the turf down and everything else, it was fantastic, but that only has a shelf life of so long.
- 54:46SPEAKER_05: And when it's getting used so often, I mean you go by drive by the Apple Bowl on a Wednesday night and you're gonna see the lights on because they got somebody else using it.
- 54:56SPEAKER_05: It gets a lot of use and that turf only lasts so long.
- 54:59SPEAKER_04: Well that last thing you want to do is is lock out your community from Apple Bowl, right?
- 55:03SPEAKER_04: Because it's not just the high school that's a very important thing.
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: It's an asset for everybody.
- 55:06SPEAKER_04: It's the the whole community is supporting this uh bond and this school district, and we make those facilities available.
- 55:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 55:14SPEAKER_07: Well, and it's important to know that the Winaji is kind of a regional center for some of the sports because our these 2A and 3A districts hold a lot of their state level competitions here because we are centrally located to a lot of them.
- 55:27SPEAKER_07: At some point, if our facilities are working against us, we're not going to be able to host these regional events.
- 55:33SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 55:34SPEAKER_07: Just like basketball tournaments that we have in this in the winter.
- 55:36SPEAKER_07: That gym is constantly in use during the winter.
- 55:39SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 55:40SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 55:41SPEAKER_07: We almost risked it it not being used for basketball because we couldn't get the baskets at the right height.
- 55:45SPEAKER_07: So it's just a matter of time before.
- 55:47SPEAKER_05: Well, and there's the ripple effect there, too.
- 55:49SPEAKER_05: I used to be the Manchester Valley Sports Council, and the economic impact of hosting these events that bring in people from a regional perspective goes to your hotels, goes to your restaurants.
- 55:58SPEAKER_05: There's a trickle-down effect.
- 55:59SPEAKER_05: Special Olympics uses a lot of the gymnasiums in the district to be able to host basketball, which is the biggest thing for the Winter Olympics.
- 56:06SPEAKER_05: There's a trickle-down that happens with that, too, of of millions of dollars of impact to the community that could potentially go somewhere else if we don't have the facilities to be able to host those things.
- 56:17SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 56:17SPEAKER_07: And, you know, somewhere like Quincy is going to be a real high competitor because they passed a big project up there.
- 56:23SPEAKER_07: So it's, you know, that's just the sports side of things.
- 56:26SPEAKER_07: We still need to focus on the education side for purposes of this bond, but it is part of the whole scheme of how important this space is to the community.
- 56:34SPEAKER_05: Well, we're going to get another perspective coming up next week.
- 56:36SPEAKER_05: We're going to have Superintendent Corey Kallahar join us as well as Diana Haglin to talk more about uh the bond measure.
- 56:42SPEAKER_05: But it's, of course, uh dropping in your in your mail.
- 56:45SPEAKER_05: The ballots are coming out and and you'll have your choice to uh see about it.
- 56:49SPEAKER_05: But we wanted to talk a little bit more and get the in inside story about the bond measure and and how that is impactful for day-to-day student activities happening here at Winanchee High School as well as the junior highs and and everything else here in the district.
- 57:03SPEAKER_05: So thank you so much for taking the time to join us.
- 57:04SPEAKER_07: Yeah, happy to be here.
- 57:05SPEAKER_07: Thank you for having us.
- 57:06SPEAKER_05: All right, there you go.
- 57:07SPEAKER_05: It's uh Tucker Jackson and Julie Norton joining us here on the Winanchee Panther Podcast.
- 57:12SPEAKER_05: It's brought to you by Leshweb and T GR Inc.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: We'll come back with more right after this.
- 58:07SPEAKER_05: We're gonna do some diving in the deep end.
- 58:10SPEAKER_05: Literally and figuratively today.
- 58:11SPEAKER_05: We're gonna talk with Emmy England, who's here.
- 58:13SPEAKER_05: Hi, Emmy.
- 58:14SPEAKER_08: Hi, how are you?
- 58:15SPEAKER_05: Good, nice to meet you.
- 58:16SPEAKER_05: Nice to meet you too.
- 58:17SPEAKER_05: Uh dive coach specifically, right?
- 58:20SPEAKER_05: So that means you must have been a diver at some point in time.
- 58:22SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:23SPEAKER_08: I started diving.
- 58:24SPEAKER_08: I was a gymnast, which is very common for a lot of divers.
- 58:27SPEAKER_08: Um, but then my freshman year in high school just decided I want to try something different.
- 58:31SPEAKER_08: So started diving, and I um I did dive um in college as well.
- 58:36SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 58:36SPEAKER_08: For um BYU.
- 58:37SPEAKER_05: So you must have been pretty successful.
- 58:40SPEAKER_05: In your diving career.
- 58:41SPEAKER_08: Um I guess, yeah, you'd have to, you know, be able to do it.
- 58:45SPEAKER_08: Where was high school?
- 58:45SPEAKER_08: Where high school was in Houston, Texas.
- 58:47SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 58:48SPEAKER_08: So yeah, I mean, they have a couple of really good, you know, clubs down there, even still today.
- 58:53SPEAKER_05: What because just because you can do it doesn't mean you can coach it.
- 58:56SPEAKER_05: So what what got you to go from, okay, I know how to do this, I can sh I can pass this off.
- 59:01SPEAKER_08: Yeah, well, I mean, diving is not a huge sport, so there's not a lot of coaches out there.
- 59:06SPEAKER_08: I know 2019, um, that's when I first started coaching, you know, Jim Beeson at the time had heard through somebody that there was someone out there that was a collegiate diver, and so he approached me and said, Hey, could you do this?
- 59:21SPEAKER_08: And so um, so yeah, um I was like, well, I haven't done a whole lot of coaching, but I love the sport and I really believe in youth athletics.
- 59:30SPEAKER_08: And so I give it a try.
- 59:32SPEAKER_05: Do you identify because it's usually a swimmer that's pulled out and go, hey, you know, you could try this.
- 59:38SPEAKER_05: Do you identify that person or do they come from the gymnastic world?
- 59:41SPEAKER_08: Or usually, yeah, we tend to try to recruit from the gymnastics world.
- 59:45SPEAKER_08: And so um, you know, I have daughters who are were or are gymnasts, and so I, you know, I know about the teams here that are local, and and so yeah, I'm always looking for those athletes.
- 59:58SPEAKER_08: You know, usually by the time that gymnasts are coming to high school, they're ready to, you know, um try something different.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_08: Uh gymnastics is very demanding, plus it's not in the high schools.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_08: And so they're willing to try something that's you know, either pole vaulting or diving, it seems like.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_05: In high school, uh what what what is the height that we're diving at?
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_08: Just one meter.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_05: Just one meter.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_05: So not it's in it's the board, it's not the the solid platform you're the diving board.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_05: Yes, the springboard.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_08: Springboard, yeah.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_08: One meter springboard, yeah.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_05: Um when you see a gymnast and you go, hmm, they're pretty good body control, I imagine, is the biggest thing that you're looking for because there's a lot of body control and the twisting and the turning and getting your hands and toes and all of that.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_05: Is that what you're looking for?
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I mean, I I always say there's kind of three components.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_08: You have, you know, strength, you have technique, and you have flexibility.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_08: And so that's kind of what you're looking at.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_08: And you know, the technique has a lot to do with that um air awareness, right?
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_08: You know, when you ask um, you know, an athlete to f you know flip one time with a twist in midair and land on your feet, you know.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_08: Or for a gymnast, the hard thing to do is land on your head.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_08: You know what I mean?
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_08: So that's one of the first things that we teach.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_05: Um but yeah, I mean it's so do you actually start with diving folks at the gym?
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_08: Do you not even are you in the pool or um yeah, there is some dry land drills that we do.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_08: Um we don't, you know, we um one of the gymnastics gyms actually graciously donated some mats and a springboard to me, you know, or a vaulting board so I can do a lot of the, you know, the lead ups to what we do on the boards just on the dry land.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_08: Um we can do a lot of drills so that you don't have to just chuck it for the first time in the water.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_05: What what are some of the first things you do?
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_05: Is it is sure.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_08: Well, yeah, very, very first thing we do, and um, this is something I learned through we started a middle school program actually three, three years ago.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_08: Um you have to start very, very basic.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_08: But the first thing we do is how to teach them how to go in on their head safely.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_08: Um because you know, number one, it's it teaches them, you know, um how to enter the water, you know, pretty in a you know without making a splash, but it there's also a safety component where protecting their head.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_08: So they've gotta know how to, you know, um grab their hands and set their arms, you know, up so that they are landing safely in the water.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_08: So yeah, that is one of the first things we teach them how to do.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_05: Um is is there a fear factor to get over to?
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_05: 100%.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_08: 100%.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_08: I mean, I can't think of I mean, other than maybe poll, you know what I mean, and gymnastics, obviously, you know, I mean, of the of the high school athletes.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_05: I I think also as a parent, I suppose there's a fear factor there is that oh, you're gonna take care of my little girl.
- 1:02:42unknown: Right.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_08: And that's why we do all of the, you know, there's progressions for every dive, right?
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_08: We're not gonna just jump into something that someone's not ready for, you know.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_08: That's one thing that we try and establish really early with our athletes, you know, we say, and we meaning I I do have a co-coach that coaches with me as well.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_08: Um, but we say, we will never ask you to do something that you're not ready to do.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_08: And so, you know, you have to build that trust factor in there.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_08: Um, and so um, but yes, I mean, there is definitely the fear factor, you know, because you know, the athletes are afraid of hitting the board.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_08: That's always they're afraid of, you know, smacking on the water, you know, they're you know, and it is scary when you, you know, launch your body with from this projectile up into the air, and you know, you're flipping and twisting and you lose, you don't know where you are in space, and that's a very unnerving feeling, you know.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_08: And so um obviously, you know, we have all kinds of progressions and things that we do to try and eliminate that, but there's always gonna be that fear factor.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_05: When you're practicing diving, and is this every day?
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_05: Is this every day after school?
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_05: Okay, so um how many dives generally for each of the girls that are up?
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_08: Sure.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_08: I would say, I mean, we have two hours.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_05: Get out there.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_08: Right, and they're you know, explosions of energy, right?
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_08: You know, you and then so yeah, I mean, our generally our practices are structured where we we have two hour practices.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_08: The first half an hour is all dry land work, so we do a ton of core work.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_08: I mean, these kids are doing, you know, three or five hundred sit-ups every day.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_08: We do, you know, lots of core work.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_08: Um, and then we also do some dry land drills, you know, body position positioning, trying to teach, you know, that muscle memory into you know those those nice body positions that we want to hit both in the air and as we enter the water.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_08: So um, and then we get on the boards and spend about an hour and a half on the boards.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_08: So, you know, in that time, I don't know.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_08: They probably, you know, we have assignments for them every day.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_08: They probably do at least 40 to 50 dives uh practice, you know, depending on how well they're working through.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_05: So you identify somebody who through gymnastics or whatever that that might be a good diver.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_05: What how do you approach them?
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_05: Do you do you approach them?
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_05: Do they approach you?
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_05: How are you recruited?
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_08: Yeah, usually well, two things that we've tried to do for recruiting.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_08: Um, like I mentioned before, we did start a middle school program a couple years ago because what we're finding is you know, some of these gymnasts that are, you know, ready to come out of gymnastics and do other sports, um, they'll go and find something before they become a freshman, right?
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_08: Yeah, right.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_08: And so you lose them.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_08: Hey, we lose them.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_08: And so, you know, we said we gotta get them before, you know, or while they're even still gymnasts, you know.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_08: And so um we started the middle school program just so just literally to because there aren't any club, you know, there's no club diving in the valley.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_08: Um and so um, you know, um just to give these athletes just a taste of what it's like, you know, come and try it.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_08: You know, we just open it up and say, come have fun.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_08: If you've ever, you know, I mean, watched it in the Olympics, thought it was really cool.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_08: You know, I don't know if you know, but Benson Boone was a diver here in Washington State.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_08: And so he said, you know, you think like Benson Boone.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_05: Greg Lugus is a is a name that I recognize from and that shows you how old I am to be.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_08: Um but yeah, so we started that and we try and, you know, and then from there we can, you know, like Lily, for example, our current diver, our top diver right now, she was one that started in seventh grade, you know, and we kind of found her through the process.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_08: She was a non-gymnist, actually, which is, you know.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_08: Um so even more kudos to her, you know, that she was able to but we look for, you know, lines and their ability.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_08: There's yeah.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_05: So just so you know, we had a battery die during the recording of this, so I'm probably might be asking her the same question again.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_05: But I want to ask you about practice and tell me about how that works and and how much I mean how many dives do you do a day or and how many swimmers do you have or divers do you have that are actually participating in diving?
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_08: This year, well, this year we only have one, which is unusual that's never happened.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_08: That's a lot of one-on-one attention then.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_08: Yes, usually we have more like, you know, six to eight.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_08: Um I've had up um even, you know, as many as twelve one year.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_08: So um, so yeah, so this is unusual that we only have the one.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_08: Um but yeah, our practices are generally two hours long.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_08: Um the first half an hour is all dry land work.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_08: So we work on a lot of core strengthening, you know, we do a lot of variations of different ab exercises, and so um um, you know, up to three to five hundred a day.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_05: You know, and then is that just because of the turning and and the the gymnastics you're doing once you leave the board?
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_08: Exactly.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and you've gotta, you know, and too, because you're you know, you're landing, you know, you're hitting the water fairly hard as well.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_08: So, you know, as you enter in the water, you have to have that core, you know, um you have to have that core stability, otherwise it can be dangerous.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_08: You can injure your back or you can injure a shoulder or something if you're not, you know, entering the water with the strength.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_05: I broke a crown once.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_05: You broke Yeah, I did.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_05: And your tooth?
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_05: Okay, yes, yes.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_05: It was it was Jamaica.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_05: Uh there was a cliff, there was a catamaran, there may have been some rum punch involved.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_05: I was gonna say continuously.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_05: Well, I it it was I'm not good with heights.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_05: So there was quite a bit of rum punch.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_05: I was gonna say that went on there.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_05: And so and it was you you did you stepped off.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_05: You didn't dive off, you just stepped off this cliff that was up, you know, and so I you know put my feet down and put my hands down and and counted.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_05: And I'm on 1,001, 1002, after 1003, I'm like, oh my god.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_05: And then hit with my feet first, and then I clenched I clenched my teeth, and that's when I broke my crown.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_08: Yes, yes, definitely keep your tongue.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_08: Water is hard.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_05: Water is hard.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_05: So uh with that twisting and turning, uh are you also working on because I imagine that that would be confusing if you're able to do all of those things.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_05: And that's for gymnastics too.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_05: Do you do you have spots like on the ceiling or on the floor or in the pool that you're do you're trying to mark?
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_08: Definitely there's you know, um another thing we try and teach him early on is to visually spot.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_08: Because if you can visually spot things, then then it's a little less scary, right?
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_08: Because you know where you are in air.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_08: You know, and you're not just you know seeing lights go flashing by.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_08: Right, exactly.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_08: Are they blue, blue?
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_08: So generally we try to give visual spots.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_08: You know, we say look at this wall, or we say spot the board, or we say spot the water, you know, there's different spots.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_08: Um another thing that we do, you know, to help them learn how to find themselves in the air is we give them calls.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_08: And so, like when you're learning a new dive, say, you know, a back one and a half or a front double, you know, that's one dive that Lily's learning right now.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_08: Um, they're not sure where to kick out.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_08: And so you give them a call and you tell them when.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_08: So, you know, they'll do the rotations and then you'll give them a little, you know, a little yell, and they'll that's their cue to kick.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_08: So it takes a lot of um trust though, you know, to do that.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_08: Because, you know, you'll get hurt if you don't come out, and you'll get hurt if you come out too early.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_08: So you gotta call, you know, you've got to trust your coach, you know, absolutely to call you in the right spot.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_08: And of course I always get it right, right?
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_05: Judging diving is always interesting, you know.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_05: We we see it every four years with the Olympics, and we're like, how did they score that one that way and not this way?
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_05: Because the person didn't even make a splash, it looked like it was good to me.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there's a lot that goes into that, isn't there?
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_08: So it's not just the entry.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_08: I mean, the entry is, you know, um the easiest thing to see, right?
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_08: Yes, they made a big splash, they didn't make a splash.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_08: Um, but you're also judging, you know, their height, their distance from the board, the their you know, the aesthetic of you know the whole dive in general, um kind of the rhythm of the dive, and you're also judging their technique.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_08: In fact, we just had a meet last week where we had you know some other teams come in and um one of the judges did come up to me um and say, you know, why was that one dive, you know, um why did that score so low?
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_08: You know, because it went in really nicely.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_08: I said, Yeah, but there was very you know it's lacking in technique quite a bit.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_05: And so even though it entered the water now, so that's if if they're doing just even a simple dive, if the arm comes out or something like that, right?
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_08: Or yeah, or if they're you know they're ducking their head, they're not using their arms.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_08: What you know what I mean?
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_08: The technique isn't good.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_08: You know, so so yeah, there's a lot that goes on.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_08: Fascinating.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_05: So tell me, uh uh I was talking with BJ, you know, Lily Hanson, one of our uh athletes of the week that couldn't make it.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_05: She's she's your diver, right?
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_05: So that's the only one you have.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_05: And the only one that's uh did I hear that she's also swimming?
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_05: Which is a rare thing to do both, right?
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, it is rare.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_08: Um particularly at her level.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_08: You know, she's you know, she's um really become very good at diving.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_08: Um, but she's also a fast swimmer too.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_08: So you know, so but we work, you know, obviously, you know, I've always got to be.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_05: Coach Emmy's over there going, okay, we're done with the spritz, we need to come dive some more.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but it does take some coordination with the swim coach, you know, to make sure she's, you know.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_08: I mean, we have had meets where she swims the last heat of the 50 and has to turn right around and get on the diving board.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_08: It's like, well, you know.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_08: But um, but she handles it.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_08: That says a lot about her though, too.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_08: She handles it really well.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_08: She's, you know, she's kind of a workhorse, you know.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_08: So she'll come in, she'll do the full swim practice, and then just come right over to our dive practice afterwards.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_08: So that's literally, you know, she's in the water from four o'clock in the afternoon to till seven thirty at night.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_08: She's, you know, so and not a whole lot of people can handle that.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_08: And so you know, what is it?
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_05: What is the the I mean, the what what's it called with the easiest dive?
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_05: It's it's just the step bounce over in.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_05: What what is that called?
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah, maybe the first dive that we teach them is a front dive tuck.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_05: And that's just kind of a jackknife and kinda yeah, in a tuck position.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_08: So there's five family of dives.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_08: You know, you have the four dives, the forwards, right?
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_08: The backs where you stand backwards and rotate backwards.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_08: You have the reverses where you're, you know, um it's a forward entry, but you're rotating backwards.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_08: Some people like to call those gainers.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_05: You know, and then you have the real risk of hitting your head on the board.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_08: And if you have good techniques.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_08: Well, okay.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_08: There should be.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_05: Or a good coach.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_08: And then the inwards, which is, you know, you stand backwards on the board, but you rotate inward rather than backward.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_08: And then the twisting dives.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_08: So those are your five family of dives, and you can do them in, you know, three different positions.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_08: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_05: And as I understand it, when you compete, do you have to tell people what you're doing, or is it and you have to have you know it's like gymnastics where you say, okay, there's supposed to be a double tuck, whatever, this, that, and the other thing.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_05: And if you don't do that, then you can be marked down because you didn't do what you said you were going to do.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_08: And then we call that a fail dive.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_08: So we try to avoid failed dives.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I would call a failed dive drowning.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_05: That's what I would call.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_08: They didn't execute the dive.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_08: Right, yeah.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_05: Well, that's fascinating.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_05: Um I was I was looking at your schedule here.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's getting down towards the end of the season, right?
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_05: King County Aquatic Center this weekend.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_05: Tell us about that.
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_08: It's the Muckle Taylor Invitational and is, yeah, over at in Federal Way at the King County Aquatic Center.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_08: It's always fun to go there.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_08: It's a world-class facility.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_05: That's where state is held at the NFC.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_08: I mean, it's really a it's a world-class facility.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_08: I think they built it in the late 90s for the Goodwill Games originally, and they hold a lot of conference championships and national meets there.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_08: Which is ironic because, you know, in the whole state of Washington, there is no D1 swim dive program.
- 1:14:29unknown: Right.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_08: For whatever reason.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_08: I don't know the history of that.
- 1:14:33SPEAKER_08: I don't know why.
- 1:14:33SPEAKER_08: But, you know, for example, my alma mater BYU just last year held their conference championships at the King Counter Aquatic Center.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_08: No kidding.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_08: Interesting.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_08: It's kind of fun to go and go watch it.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_08: But anyway, um, so yeah, it's a big meet.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_08: It's a great chance, it's a great warm-up for state.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_08: You know, Lily was a state qualifier as a sophomore last year, which is a nice accomplishment for her.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_08: But um, you know, and we ex fully expect that she'll be able to qualify again this year.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_08: So it's it's great to get in there.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_08: You know, the the facility itself can be a little bit intimidating.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_08: You've got your whole you know, 10-meter tower system and everything there, you know, and it's very big.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_08: The pool's extremely deep.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_08: You know, I always warn my athletes they're they're used to going down and pushing off the bottom, you know, but they get in that deep pool and there's nothing to push off of, and they're just you know, yeah.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_05: And that was the other thing about Jamaica that I once I got in the water and I started trying to get up to the surface.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_05: I'm like, okay, I'm running out of here.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_08: Exactly.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_08: I gotta get to the fight to get to the surface really quickly.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_08: But obviously.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_08: So yeah, we're excited, and it gives us a chance to because we don't have a ton of competition within our district itself in our league.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_08: Um and so it gives us a chance to compete against some of the you know um schools on the west side.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_08: They have clubs over there, so then you know, you're now you're competing against the club team, the divers that you know are.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_05: And if you see it, you can achieve it type of a thing.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_05: So with Lily, you're like, okay, now watch this person, this one's really good.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_08: And you can yeah, exactly.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_08: And you know, but you know, in the past, you know, several of our divers have been able to compete with those club divers, you know, and for being just you know high school divers that only train two and a half months out of the season and be able to actually compete, you know, with these you know year-round kind of uh athletes.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_08: It's it's uh it's great to see.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_08: My athletes are hardworking and so you know, and you know, they they're tough.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_08: They're really, really tough.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_08: I think some of your toughest athletes.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_08: I mean, it's hard to crash, land on your back, and get right back up and do it again.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_08: Come out, I'm hurting right now.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_05: Well, congrats to Lily Hansen.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_05: She is she couldn't join us today for the Panther podcast, but uh the female athlete of the week, the Panther of the Week, and her coach is Emmy England.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_05: Thank you, Emmy, for doing this.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_05: I appreciate it.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_05: Kind of a weird deal here.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_05: Hey, I just need to run down the list here.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_05: Uh of course this drops on Thursday, so let's run down the schedule for you real quick.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_05: Uh Panther slow pitch against Moses Lake.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_05: Uh that's home today at four o'clock.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, Panther volleyball tonight at home as well, six thirty against Sunnyside.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_05: As we mentioned, swim and dive over at King County Aquatic Center on uh Saturday at 9 a.m.
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_05: Panther Girl Soccer at Sunnyside at 1 o'clock on Saturday, and of course, Panther football, the Weinstein Beverage Panther football game of the week this Friday in the Apple Bowl.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_05: I will have the play-by-play uh here on our YouTube channel.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_05: Pregame at 6 30, kick off at 7 o'clock.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_05: So be sure and listen in for that.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_05: That's gonna do it for this edition of the Winathew Panther Podcast.

- 1:17:31SPEAKER_05: That's gonna wrap it up.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_05: I'm Eric Grandstrom.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_05: Join us again next time for the Winanchew Panther Podcast.
