- 0:00I'd like to take this time in preparation for the Lord's
- 0:03Supper to share a few thoughts from the Scriptures.
- 0:07Obviously that's been brewing in my heart for the past few weeks.
- 0:12You know, one of the beauties of walking with the Lord Jesus
- 0:14Christ is that His Word can grip you in such a way, especially a
- 0:20passage. It can be sometimes even a word
- 0:23that you find yourself returning to it time and time again in
- 0:26your thoughts and meditations. And that's what's been happening
- 0:31recently from a recent morning reading in the book of Genesis,
- 0:35as I revisited the story of the man whose name is Isaac, the son
- 0:42of Abraham and the father of Jacob.
- 0:44And what's interesting about Isaac is that out of all the
- 0:48patriarchs, the three main ones, he lived the longest, 180 years
- 0:53to be exact. That's a lot of life.
- 0:58And yet the Holy Spirit, out of all the stories that he could
- 1:00have preserved about Isaac, chose to give us the most
- 1:04extensive chapter of his story regarding him digging wells.
- 1:13I'm sure that in our culture today, cultivating wells has
- 1:18very little to offer us in terms of practical or even spiritual
- 1:21inspiration. But it's not about the wells
- 1:24necessarily. It's what happened to Isaac
- 1:29around those wells that deserve some attention.
- 1:36What you'll find when you read Genesis chapter 26 is that Isaac
- 1:41around his possessions and how he was treated by outsiders
- 1:45turned out to be a wonderful model for a godly peacemaker.
- 1:52Isaac was a peacemaker, and more importantly, what you discover
- 1:57in that chapter is that the Lord loves, honors, and blesses
- 2:05peacemakers. The Bible has a lot, a lot to
- 2:11say about peace and has a reasonable about to say about
- 2:15peacemakers. And even as I'm speaking about
- 2:18this subject, perhaps the famous words of the Lord Jesus Christ
- 2:21is flashing in some of our minds from Matthew chapter 5, the
- 2:24Sermon on the Mount, where he said blessed are the peace
- 2:28makers, for they shall be called sons of God.
- 2:34I think most of us in here memorize that verse.
- 2:37I'm afraid that those who are very familiar with it aren't too
- 2:40sure what it actually implies. It's weighty.
- 2:46Just by looking at Christ's words in that single statement,
- 2:49we know something about peacemakers.
- 2:52Whatever that is, whatever a peacemaker is.
- 2:55It's an attitude that affirms 1's relationship with God, and
- 3:03it is a testimony that relays and conveys to others that his
- 3:07holy character is reflected in US.
- 3:13Christians are to be peacemakers, and when we gather
- 3:20all the scriptural data of what it means to be peacemaker, I
- 3:23think you can come to this definition.
- 3:25It's very simple. A peacemaker is someone who
- 3:29actively seeks to reconcile and restore relational harmony,
- 3:35somebody who actively seeks to reconcile and restore relational
- 3:41harmony both with God and man. You see, in a very real sense,
- 3:49we as Christians are peacemakers because we preach the gospel.
- 3:54The gospel is a message of reconciliation.
- 3:57And as the Lord sends us out to go and reach others with this
- 4:01news, what we're essentially doing is calling those who stand
- 4:05as enemies of God to be restored to the God of peace through his
- 4:11Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who is known as what, the Prince of
- 4:13Peace. So the fact that we have this
- 4:16gospel in our hearts, in it leaves our mouths, makes us
- 4:20peacemakers. You know, there's this wonderful
- 4:23little statement or way of description that Peter gives
- 4:28when he was preaching to the household of Cornelius, and he
- 4:31describes the gospel in the following way.
- 4:33Let me just quote it to you from Acts 1036.
- 4:36You don't have to turn there. Just listen carefully.
- 4:37Listen to how Peter describes the gospel.
- 4:43As for the word that he sent to Israel preaching good news of
- 4:48peace through Jesus Christ. He is Lord of all the King.
- 4:56James I believe would say preaching peace.
- 5:00When you witness to a Co worker, when you're sitting at the
- 5:03dinner table, maybe around Thanksgiving, and are leaning
- 5:06towards your cousin and telling you about the gospel, you're
- 5:09preaching peace. You're telling them how they can
- 5:12have peace with God. Isn't that remarkable?
- 5:18We're peacemakers as Christians, but it's not limited to that
- 5:22glorious calling. Being a peacemaker also includes
- 5:29someone who seeks to mend relationships between men, and
- 5:34that emphasis isn't primarily about us inserting ourselves
- 5:38into every strained marriage or fractured relationship between
- 5:42friends to try to bring resolution.
- 5:46We have to be careful there. There's a proper time and
- 5:48protocol and place for when and how we get involved with
- 5:53conflicts that do not immediately involve us now.
- 5:58Instead, the the primary meaning of us being peacemakers
- 6:01horizontally is that we are called to be initiators in
- 6:07receiving peace and accepting peace and granting peace when
- 6:11there is animosity between US and others, when we know that
- 6:14there's some kind of tension between people and us, being a
- 6:18peacemaker means that we have that primary responsibility.
- 6:21We should be the ones who take the first step in building
- 6:24bridges. And I want to tell you that
- 6:28Matthew 59 is not the only passage that highlights just how
- 6:31essential this is. Can I ask you something?
- 6:34How many of us in this place consider the call to be
- 6:38peacemakers? As Christians, we know that
- 6:40there are many things that we are responsible for as
- 6:43Christians, but I want to remind you that there is a great
- 6:47premium. There is a high observation in
- 6:51the Scriptures for us as followers of Jesus Christ to not
- 6:54just preach the gospel, but to also see relationships healed,
- 7:00especially the ones that we are involved in.
- 7:05You and I understand that one of our identities as Christians is
- 7:07to be salt, right? The salt of the earth.
- 7:10And that's a wonderful picture, right?
- 7:12But I always love to ask the question, what does that
- 7:15practically look like? What does it mean for me and
- 7:20you, because of our faith in Christ, to be agents of healing
- 7:23and preservation in a society that is slowly decaying because
- 7:26of sin? Well, there are many
- 7:29ingredients, but I want to present to you at least one in
- 7:34relation to what we're speaking about today that I think is
- 7:36often overlooked. Let me just ask you this again.
- 7:39When you think salt of the earth, what comes to mind in
- 7:41terms of practical relational responsibility or duty or
- 7:47discipline? What?
- 7:47What right? You don't have to answer out
- 7:48loud, but I'm just asking. Let me tell you what Jesus made
- 7:52so clear. Now I ask you to go to Mark
- 7:54Chapter 9 and your Bibles and look at verse 50 because I want
- 7:58you to see it with your own eyes.
- 8:05Mark 950. I'll wait for the wrestling of
- 8:07the leaves to settle before I read it.
- 8:17I'll read it slowly now. Salt is good, Jesus said.
- 8:21But if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it
- 8:25salty again? Have salt in your cells and be
- 8:30at peace with one another. This is astounding.
- 8:38Jesus is teaching that if you and I want to secure our
- 8:41distinct Christian flavor and witness in this rotten world, we
- 8:49must strive to be at peace with one another.
- 8:54Our spirit empowered efforts to achieve and maintain harmony in
- 9:00relationships is imperative to our witness.
- 9:09And wherever there is a weakened community due to a lack of
- 9:15tranquility and peace, you have a deficiency in their
- 9:20effectiveness to testify to the world of why we're different and
- 9:25how powerful this gospel is. Here's another verse to
- 9:30consider, Hebrews chapter 12. Let's turn there now.
- 9:36I believe in my experience, at least 90% of the time when this
- 9:40verse is quoted, people cut out the first part.
- 9:43Hebrews 12 verse 14 Strive for peace with everyone and for the
- 9:54holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
- 10:00In my experience again growing up in the church and even being
- 10:05in ministry, when people come to this text, they usually quoted
- 10:09in the following ways. Strive for a holiness without
- 10:12which no one will see the Lord. Is that true of you?
- 10:17You can't leave out the first part.
- 10:19Before he says strive for holiness.
- 10:21He says strive to be at peace with everyone, with everyone.
- 10:29I wish I can expand on this first, but we got to stay on
- 10:31track. You know what the word strive
- 10:32means to pursue aggressively. It conveys the idea of running
- 10:40towards the finish line, to be chasing something until you
- 10:44catch it. It's an intense word.
- 10:48Strive, strive to be at peace with everyone.
- 10:53And the Holy Spirit through this wants us that that kind of
- 10:55ambition for achieving enmity with everyone, everyone.
- 11:00Your husband, your wife, your children, your coworkers, the
- 11:06members of your church, the neighbors on your street, I can
- 11:13go on. Let me just summarize with this
- 11:15anyone who still has a pulse. You and I as peacemakers, so
- 11:22strive to be at peace with them. And I want to examine this
- 11:30further, but I have to 1st ask you to extend grace to me from
- 11:35this point on, please. I'm fully aware that whenever a
- 11:38preacher speaks on relationships, there are
- 11:42countless situations that listeners may be facing, each
- 11:46one requiring unique instructions.
- 11:49And sometimes the example shared in a message may not directly
- 11:53apply to your unique case. So let me be clear.
- 11:57This sermon today will not attempt to cover every possible
- 12:00scenario of strife complexities. Instead, I'm simply offering a
- 12:08few insights from one single account.
- 12:12And I ask that you would take it upon yourself to ask the Lord
- 12:17how, in this brief message, one or most or all of these points
- 12:21could apply and resonate with you.
- 12:27And these will be quick looks for now.
- 12:30We won't be able to cover these things at length, but I want, I
- 12:34want to tell you is that Isaac is a wonderful illustration in
- 12:38Genesis 26 of what peacemaking entails, what it looks like,
- 12:43what it doesn't look like. And so let me give you the
- 12:47background of Isaac's story. In Genesis 26, there was a
- 12:49famine in the land, and so he felt the need to leave and to
- 12:53plant him and his family in a place called Garar.
- 12:56And while in Garrard, there were things that happened that
- 12:59compromised his witness, and we don't have time to get into that
- 13:02now. But Isaac chose to establish
- 13:04himself in Garrard, and he decided to invest in land and to
- 13:09build his resources. And what you find following that
- 13:12decision is nothing short of a miracle from the Lord.
- 13:15Now let's turn to our main text in Genesis 26, beginning in
- 13:19verse 12, to see what I mean here.
- 13:28It says here in Genesis 26, verse 12.
- 13:32And Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a
- 13:35hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, and the
- 13:41man became rich and gained more and more until he became very
- 13:44wealthy. He had possessions of flocks and
- 13:47herds and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him.
- 13:51Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the
- 13:54wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham.
- 13:57His father and Abimelech said to Isaac, go away from us, for you
- 14:03are much mightier than we. We might think that this is
- 14:09where the story ends, but I'm here to tell you it's just
- 14:11starting. And from this point on, for the
- 14:14rest of this chapter, we're going to consider 5 insights of
- 14:19Peacemaking, 5 clues, 5 marks of being a peacemaker.
- 14:26Consider this just as discipleship time from heart to
- 14:31heart. Number one, to be a peacemaker
- 14:37sometimes requires us to surrender our rights.
- 14:44We need to be very wise with this point because the truth of
- 14:46the matter is there are times when we need to fight for our
- 14:49rights and not be passive with troublemakers.
- 14:54The apostle Paul at times appealed to his legal
- 14:57entitlements for the sake of the advancement and the integrity of
- 15:00the gospel, right? He would often say, hey, I'm a
- 15:03Roman citizen, you can't treat me this way.
- 15:05And that's legitimate. However, there are also moments
- 15:09where he did not wield his citizenship.
- 15:13He did not appeal to his Apostolic prerogatives for the
- 15:17same goal. So it's a case by case
- 15:20situation. And there are times where we
- 15:23also have to, especially in personal conflicts, choose to
- 15:28walk away instead of choosing to fight, resist.
- 15:38We're not told why Isaac gracefully dismissed himself at
- 15:44the confiscation of his wells, but whatever his reason was, he
- 15:48thought it to be the better option than digging his heels in
- 15:53the ground and potentially getting into a war with the
- 15:58Philistines. He refrained from retaliation.
- 16:05And that's incredibly difficult for us to do, especially when we
- 16:07are being mistreated, especially when we sense that we are being
- 16:12treated unfairly. But choosing silence, refusing
- 16:20to retaliate, and not wasting time or energy with something
- 16:23that doesn't seem worth it can at times be the more righteous
- 16:27path. And if you need any motivation
- 16:30to trust in God's wisdom with that option, I believe Isaac
- 16:33gives us the secret. You know why?
- 16:34I believe Isaac could do this with great humility and
- 16:39consistency. He believed in God's Providence.
- 16:46So I want you to see this in verse 17.
- 16:48Look what happens. So Isaac departed from there and
- 16:51encamped in the valley of Gerar and settled there.
- 16:54And Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the
- 16:57days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines had
- 17:00stopped after the death of Abraham, and he gave them names
- 17:04that his father had given them. But when Isaac's servants dug in
- 17:08the valley and found there a well of spring water, the
- 17:11herdsmen of Gerard quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying
- 17:15the water is ours. No, it's not.
- 17:18That's my commentary. No, it's not.
- 17:20It's not yours. So he called the name of the
- 17:26well Isaac, because they contended with him.
- 17:30Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that also.
- 17:33So he called its name Sitna. And he moved from there and dug
- 17:37another well. And they did not quarrel over
- 17:39it. So he called its name Rehoboot,
- 17:42saying, For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall
- 17:46be fruitful in the land. The Lord.
- 17:53I'm recognizing God's leadership in this.
- 17:56I'm recognizing God's provision in this.
- 17:59I'm recognizing that even though this is unfair, God has blessed
- 18:04me. And listen, you have to remember
- 18:06here that these repeated offenses were beyond Isaac's
- 18:09control. What did we read earlier?
- 18:11The Philistines envied him. Have you ever tried to build a
- 18:16meaningful relationship with somebody who envies you?
- 18:20It's nearly impossible. Why?
- 18:21Because they feel this anger and this bitterness towards you.
- 18:25For what reason? Because God's blessing.
- 18:26You're using you in a certain way.
- 18:28It's very difficult to work with somebody like that.
- 18:31What am I supposed to change? The Philistines envied him.
- 18:38Despite that, Isaac realized that the Lord was able to lead
- 18:41him to a broad place. Because the Scripture tells us
- 18:44that even the wrath of man can praise God.
- 18:47God can turn the wrath of man to a testimony in your life.
- 18:51And that's what this man believe.
- 18:53The Lord has made room for us. I recognize God in this.
- 18:57I'm trusting God in this. And listen, if if anyone ever
- 19:00unfairly takes something that belongs to you, could be a piece
- 19:03of your reputation, it could be a possession, it can be even a
- 19:08position. A peacemaker will step back,
- 19:12calculate, pray, and consider the possibility of just walking
- 19:19away and trusting God to deal with it.
- 19:25This is a call for wisdom. How do I know when to stand and
- 19:29to fight? And how do I know when that I
- 19:33should just leave and let God deal with it directly?
- 19:38You might think this sounds unrealistic.
- 19:39It's not. It's found in a New Testament.
- 19:41You remember what Paul told the Corinthians?
- 19:43These Christians were taking each other to court.
- 19:47And what did he say there in First Corinthians 6-7?
- 19:50Hey, why don't some of you choose to rather be defrauded?
- 19:55Why don't some of you just surrender?
- 19:57Why don't you just give up for the sake of being salt?
- 20:03You're going out to the world and you are bearers of names of
- 20:05of Christ, and you're fighting with each other over temporal
- 20:08things. This is a defeat for you.
- 20:12Paul said suffer wrong. Surrender.
- 20:16Your right. Sometimes to be a peacemaker
- 20:19means that you have to do just that.
- 20:21Isaac did that. We come to the second point of
- 20:25what it means to be a peacemaker.
- 20:27To be a peacemaker does not mean that we don't feel the pain or
- 20:31the frustration caused by people's aggravations.
- 20:34So again, you might feel like this is a tall order.
- 20:37This seems unrealistic. You're asking me to walk away.
- 20:39You don't understand. OK, look in verse 20.
- 20:44I want you to notice that with each well that was taken from
- 20:48Isaac, he named it something and in verse 20 we read that he
- 20:52named the 1st wall Isec. You know what Isec means?
- 20:55Contention and the next one sit now which means enmity.
- 21:01So as much as we we can say Isaac was impressive in walking
- 21:05away, he was also not living in denial.
- 21:10It was painful. He did sense the injustice, he
- 21:17was bothered, and he recognized that these interactions for what
- 21:21they were. And I'm sure that there was some
- 21:24kind of emotional processing when he named these wells.
- 21:27Here's why this is important. You need to be free that you are
- 21:34not harboring unforgiveness or you are not qualified to be a
- 21:38peacemaker just because your heart is still bruised by the
- 21:42carelessness or the selfishness caused by somebody else's
- 21:45action. Just because it hurts doesn't
- 21:49mean that you are not in the right.
- 21:53It doesn't mean that you are not walking in faithfulness, doesn't
- 21:55mean that you're not walking in faith.
- 21:58It's a bruise, it's a wound, and sometimes bruises last longer
- 22:02than others. So the presence of emotions that
- 22:07are hurtful, memories that are painful does not mean that you
- 22:11are not in the will of God, does not mean that you're outside of
- 22:14Christ. Like character.
- 22:17The Bible's so realistic. At the same time, you got to be
- 22:22careful that painful memories don't blind you to potential
- 22:25opportunities to be reconciled with those who have caused pain
- 22:28in your life. There's a very fine line, right?
- 22:32You can revisit those scenes and those words to the degree that
- 22:38it calluses you to the point where it numbs you from your
- 22:43calling to be a peacemaker. It should the opportunity arise.
- 22:47If you've allowed your heart to become Diamond Hard, it'll
- 22:52become much more difficult to be the initiator of reconciliation.
- 22:56Isaac was realistic with how this whole thing made him feel.
- 23:02But we come to point #3 to be a peacemaker does not mean you
- 23:08abandon or ignore the truth for the sake of harmony.
- 23:13So Isaac moves on and we read here.
- 23:16We're going to skip a couple verses.
- 23:17We'll look at them in a second, but look down at verse 26.
- 23:21This is interesting. When Abimelech went to him from
- 23:25Garrar without who's that? His advisor and Fee Cole, the
- 23:29commander of his army. Isaac said to them.
- 23:31Why have you come to me seeing that you hate me and have sent
- 23:35me away from you? So we see here that Abimelech
- 23:40and his top advisors pay Isaac a visit.
- 23:42They learned about his new address and they thought, let's
- 23:45go visit him and let's try to make a truce.
- 23:49Let's try to make an oath with this man but the past behind us,
- 23:54and to promise to never go to war with each other from this
- 23:58day forward. But what I find so interesting
- 24:01is that with this unannounced arrival, Isaac, before
- 24:05entertaining any other conversation, confronts these
- 24:07philistines for their behavior. What are you doing here?
- 24:13Don't you hate me? You drove me away from you.
- 24:20Now you might be wondering. I thought we were looking at
- 24:22Isaac as model for peace. We are, and he is no less a
- 24:28peacemaker here than when he walked away from his own wells.
- 24:33Because, you see, a biblical peacemaker does not try to
- 24:37appease others or excuse unrighteousness for the sake of
- 24:41relational tranquility. A true peacemaker will invite
- 24:46God's truth into a conflict and will surrender to what the
- 24:51living God asks of both parties involved.
- 24:57So we have to be reminded of this fundamental truth.
- 24:59We never do away with the truth in the name of peace.
- 25:04There are a lot of people who are tolerating evil and sin in
- 25:09the name of being a peacemaker. That's not biblical peacemaking.
- 25:14That's compromised calm. Now, this model here showing us
- 25:21that we should never accept or rationalize evil so that someone
- 25:24can feel accepted, That's unloving and deceptive.
- 25:33You know, it was Jesus who said that I had not come to bring
- 25:35peace to the world. What?
- 25:39You're the Prince of peace? No, I did not come to bring a
- 25:43certain type of peace of the world.
- 25:45I've actually come to bring a sword.
- 25:49What did he mean by that in Matthew 10?
- 25:52He meant that he was coming into the world with a saving message
- 25:56that carried the potential of bringing division in different
- 26:02circles because of one or more than one party accepting that
- 26:07saving message. And in Christ's mind, if that
- 26:12division occurs because of the truth being embraced, then that
- 26:16division is worth it, because true peace can only come from
- 26:22accepting the truth. James speaks about godly wisdom,
- 26:30and he actually describes what it looks like in detail, the
- 26:34qualities of godly wisdom, what godly wisdom, when somebody
- 26:37possesses it, what does it look like?
- 26:39And in it you have this wonderful equation, this
- 26:43wonderful principle of even what true peace is all about in James
- 26:48317, James says, But the wisdom from above is first pure, then
- 26:56peaceable. What comes before peace, Purity,
- 27:02purity, The renouncing of sin, the renouncing of compromise,
- 27:07the renouncing of anything that compromises or contradicts the
- 27:10truth. There can't be true peace unless
- 27:14there is the honouring of purity.
- 27:21What gave Isaac the courage to speak up in this way?
- 27:28It's found in the verses that we didn't read when Isaac went up
- 27:31to Beersheba. In verse 24 of Genesis 26 it
- 27:35says this. And the Lord appeared to him the
- 27:37same night and said, I am the God of Abraham your father, fear
- 27:41not frying with you, and will bless you.
- 27:43Multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.
- 27:48Sometimes it's a fearful thing to forsake peace for the sake of
- 27:57the truth. Sometimes it's difficult, just
- 28:01as a general rule, to approach anybody and to confront them for
- 28:05their wrong or to stand for that which is right.
- 28:09And I see that following this, Isaac was able to speak up
- 28:13because God promised him his presence and God promised him
- 28:18his reward. And you and I need to find the
- 28:23same courage from that same place that when there are
- 28:26situations in your family, at your workplace, where you have
- 28:30to choose the truth, even if it means inviting turbulence, the
- 28:38Lord is with me. The Lord sees me, He sees my
- 28:40heart. He sees that I want to please
- 28:42him above everything else. And He will honor you for that.
- 28:46And we're told in Romans that as far as it depends on you, be at
- 28:52peace with all men teaching us what it's not always possible.
- 28:58Even though you're the peacemaker, it doesn't mean that
- 29:00you're going to have guaranteed peace with everybody.
- 29:01And one of the reasons why it's not always possible is because
- 29:04there are many people who don't want purity.
- 29:07They don't want to admit they're wrong.
- 29:08They don't want to repent of their sin.
- 29:11And so you've done your part by upholding the truth and yet
- 29:16still trying to be a peacemaker, even though the results don't
- 29:19come out the way you desire #4 to be a peacemaker means you
- 29:26will do your part to achieve peace.
- 29:29Let's read back in Genesis 26 what happens after Isaac
- 29:32confronts the Philistines. And this is what I read a few
- 29:38weeks ago in Genesis that made me realize how much Isaac shined
- 29:45as a peacemaker. Are you there?
- 29:47In verse 28 they said, this is the Philistines.
- 29:52We see plainly that the Lord has been with you.
- 29:56So we said, let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and
- 30:00us, and let us make a covenant with you that you will do us no
- 30:04harm, just as we have not touched you and have not done to
- 30:09you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace.
- 30:14Read that last part again. Have done to you nothing but
- 30:17good and I've sent you away in peace.
- 30:22So when I read this, I don't know if it was this last time or
- 30:27a previous time. I put a green marked question
- 30:30mark beside that phrase. What do you mean?
- 30:35You've done nothing wrong? OK, I, I see here that you did
- 30:40not touch him. That's true, but there's an
- 30:43incomplete approach here. We've done nothing wrong to you.
- 30:49Be honest. How would you react to that?
- 30:52What kind of confession is that? To our surprise, to our
- 31:00amazement, Isaac doesn't even address it, doesn't even comment
- 31:04on it. He chooses to move on with the
- 31:08proposal, which in principle means that he does not insist on
- 31:14the faults of his offenders. And now we have to be very
- 31:19careful of not miss applying this part, because Isaac is not
- 31:25accepting reconciliation without repentance as he prepares to
- 31:28make a deal with these men. That's not what he's doing here.
- 31:31If you're carefully reading, you'll understand that he
- 31:33acknowledges the effort of the Philistines and is willing to
- 31:36bypass the weakness of their attempt for the sake of his own
- 31:42conscience and the promise of peace.
- 31:47And this is someone who recognizes the opportunity to
- 31:52resolve something with his neighbors.
- 31:55He does his part, and he leaves the details to God.
- 32:01You and I can't be stubborn and expect to flourish as
- 32:06peacemakers if we're truly peacemakers.
- 32:10Then again, it depends on the nature of the relationship and
- 32:14the dynamics of the problem. But a peacemaker will be on the
- 32:19lookout for any opportunity to infuse peace in that strained
- 32:27relationship. So in some cases it, it will
- 32:31only look like this whenever you cross paths with somebody that
- 32:35is at odds with you, that has maybe mistreated you with
- 32:38unresolved conflict, your responsibility as a peacemaker
- 32:41is to extend a greeting according to Jesus words in
- 32:44Matthew, the extended greeting, because if you only greet your
- 32:49brothers, you know, different than the Gentiles.
- 32:53I quoted to you earlier what Paul said in Romans 1218.
- 32:56If possible, it's not always possible.
- 32:59If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably
- 33:05with all, just live at peace with people.
- 33:12And in that same passage you have an insight of what that
- 33:17might look like. This is this is the problem of
- 33:20taking verses out of their context.
- 33:22You, you miss out on the full meaning.
- 33:23So most of us know Romans 12/18 and most of us know Romans
- 33:2712/20, but have we ever considered how they're married?
- 33:30What does it say in Romans 12/20 to the contrary?
- 33:33If your enemy is hungry, feed him.
- 33:36If he is thirsty, give him something to drink for.
- 33:38By doing so, you'll heap burning coals on his head.
- 33:41That's in context of being a peacemaker.
- 33:45So peacemaker like Isaac will recognize opportunities to
- 33:50sprinkle peace, maybe even on a person who's caused problems in
- 33:58your life. That might look like an awkward
- 34:03hello or may look like visiting somebody who is very sick, may
- 34:11not have another day to live. This man convicted me.
- 34:21He didn't get into a shouting match.
- 34:23Oh, you did nothing to me. He just, he sees what this
- 34:31relationship will entail. He's not marrying the
- 34:33Philistines, He's not going to be working with the Philistines.
- 34:39He's just agreeing on these terms of peace.
- 34:43There'll be no retaliation, I'll give you that.
- 34:46I accept your incomplete confession.
- 34:56Lastly, being a peacemaker opens heavenly blessings.
- 35:08Look at verse 30. So he made them a feast, and
- 35:15they ate and drank. In the morning they rose early
- 35:19and exchanged oaths, and Isaac sent them on their way, and they
- 35:24departed from him in peace that same day.
- 35:31I underlined those 3 words twice.
- 35:33That same day, Isaac's servants came and told them about the
- 35:37well that they had dug and set them.
- 35:40We have found water. Stop.
- 35:42Coincidence. Coincidence that on that very
- 35:47day he made peace with his enemies.
- 35:52Fresh water sprung from that land, shot out from the earth.
- 35:59No, and Isaac knew it was in coincidence.
- 36:02Look at verse 33. He called it Sheba.
- 36:06Therefore, the name of this city is Beer Sheba to this day.
- 36:08What does Sheba mean? Oath.
- 36:13He memorialized as well and made a connection between its
- 36:16arrival. It's a blessing, God's provision
- 36:21and the oath that he made with the Philistines, you and I,
- 36:28making the decision to be peacemakers, to be agents of
- 36:33reconciliation and relational harmony will open God's favor in
- 36:39your life, will win his smile. I give those insights to you.
- 36:51They are now in your lap. And now I ask you, as we reflect
- 36:56on the God of peace, who has made peace with us, who
- 37:00initiated reconciliation with us, who in a sense surrendered
- 37:05his rights so that he can reach down to us to ask how what we
- 37:10just scratched may apply in your life.
- 37:16I'll tell you, you convicted me. You did convicted me.
- 37:20I'm not sure how much thought I've given as a Christian to be
- 37:24a peacemaker. Yeah.
- 37:27Living free from sin? Sure.
- 37:29Reading my Bible? Absolutely.
- 37:30Serving in the church. But peace making?
- 37:35Strive for it. Pursue it if possible.
- 37:41Be at peace with everyone you know.
- 37:46Lord, we ask that you help us in this moment.
- 37:54With all the unique predicaments, maybe the
- 38:02intensity of the pain makes it even difficult to digest any of
- 38:07these thoughts. Whatever the case may be, we ask
- 38:10that you would give us the spirit of wisdom to know how to
- 38:14apply what you have given to us through Isaac's life.
- 38:22And now, though, we ask that you give us eyes to see if we lack
- 38:26any motivation, the God of peace, who is our God, who did
- 38:35not allow us to have our own way and to walk in our own way
- 38:39without making an attempt to reconcile, to restore us.
- 38:49We pray for our enemies as you commanded us to, Lord, even if
- 38:55they were in the wrong, that you would forgive them, that you
- 38:59would convict them, that they would see their errors so that
- 39:03they can be ultimately reconciled to you and Lord.
- 39:08We also ask that should the opportunity arise to extend
- 39:17peace, it may look different. Show us with these different
- 39:23options, different limitations, how to do that.
- 39:27We want to please you. You are a reward, we love you,
- 39:33we honor you in Jesus name, Amen.
- 39:39If the praise team can join us and prepare us through your
- 39:43gifts to sing to the Lord and reflect on these truths
- 39:49together. If you're more comfortable
- 39:53remaining seated so that you can better receive the truth that we
- 39:59will sing, or maybe you're still dealing with the message and you
- 40:01want to pray about it, you can do that for those who would like
- 40:04to stand. Let's stand and let's sing to
- 40:06the Lord before we partake.
