- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, it's the 9th of
- 0:15February and if you are lucky enough to share this part of the
- 0:18world with me, we've got a public holiday today.
- 0:20So that means if you are normally going to work on
- 0:24Mondays, whatever you do today, you're still paid.
- 0:27Therefore you are a professional at what you do today.
- 0:29So if you were sleeping in a cooking breakfast, you are a
- 0:32professional breakfast chef. If you're playing golf today,
- 0:35you my friend, are a professional golfer.
- 0:37That is certainly not going to happen to me because there there
- 0:40was chasms between me and Professional Golf.
- 0:43But that's OK. Today is the day that we are
- 0:46going to kick off a week of readings in which we will
- 0:49continue and finish the book of first John and then in it's
- 0:54entirety on one day. On Thursday we'll read the book
- 0:57of Jude before we finish out the week with some proverbs.
- 1:02And today we are continuing to read this persuasive writing
- 1:07that John writes, urging people to say, if your identity is a
- 1:11child of God, if you are Christian, then that has to has
- 1:15to flow on to shaping what your life looks like.
- 1:19These are wonderful words of love and encouragement written
- 1:23for you and me, friends. So let us enjoy them reading
- 1:26together first. John chapter 3.
- 1:40See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his
- 1:45children, and that is what we are.
- 1:48But the people who belong to this world don't recognise that
- 1:51we are God's children because they don't know Him.
- 1:55Dear friends, we are already God's children, but he has not
- 2:00yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears.
- 2:04But we do know that we will be like Him, for we will see Him as
- 2:10He really is, and all who have this eager expectation will keep
- 2:15themselves pure just as He is pure.
- 2:19Everyone who sins is breaking God's law, for all sin is
- 2:23contrary to the law of God, and you know that Jesus came to take
- 2:27away our sins, and there is no sin in Him.
- 2:31Anyone who continues to live in Him will not sin, but anyone who
- 2:36keeps on sinning does not know Him or understand who He is.
- 2:42Dear children, don't let anyone deceive you about this.
- 2:46When people do what is right, it shows that they are righteous
- 2:50even as Christ is righteous. But when people keep on sinning,
- 2:55it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning
- 2:59since the beginning. But the Son of God came to
- 3:03destroy the works of the devil. Those who have been born into
- 3:06God's family do not make a practise of sinning because
- 3:10God's life is in them. So they can't keep on sinning
- 3:14because they are children of God.
- 3:16So now we can tell who are children of God and who are
- 3:21children of the devil. Anyone who does not live
- 3:25righteously and does not love other believers does not belong
- 3:29to God. This is the message you have
- 3:33heard from the beginning. We should love one another.
- 3:37We must not be like Cain, who belonged to the Evil 1 and
- 3:40killed his brother. And why did he kill him?
- 3:44Because Cain had been doing what was evil and his brother had
- 3:47been doing what was righteous. So don't be surprised, dear
- 3:51brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.
- 3:54If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it
- 3:57proves that we have passed from death to life.
- 4:02But a person who has no love is still dead.
- 4:06Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer
- 4:10at heart, and you know that murderers don't have eternal
- 4:14life within them. We know what real love is
- 4:19because Jesus gave up his life for us, so we also ought to give
- 4:24up our lives for our brothers and sisters.
- 4:28If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or
- 4:31sister in need but shows no compassion, how can God's love
- 4:35be in that person? Dear children, let's not merely
- 4:38say that we love each other. Let us show the truth by our
- 4:43actions. Our actions will show that we
- 4:46belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand
- 4:50before God, even if we feel guilty.
- 4:53God is greater than our feelings, and He knows
- 4:56everything. Dear friends, if we don't feel
- 5:00guilty, we can come to God with bold confidence, and we will
- 5:04receive from Him whatever we ask, because we obey Him and do
- 5:09the things that please Him. And this is His commandment.
- 5:14We must believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love
- 5:18one another just as He commanded us.
- 5:22Those who obey God's commandments remain in
- 5:25fellowship with Him and he with them.
- 5:28And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us
- 5:33lives in US. Oh
- 5:45Jesus, your love runs so contradictory to the tides and
- 5:51the currents of this world that tell us the best thing we can do
- 5:54is plan for ourselves, look after ourselves, organise our
- 5:59own future. But here You encourage us that
- 6:03if we have enough, then look to the needs of those around us.
- 6:08So Lord, I pray that our faith in you and the love that you
- 6:12just so lavishly give us that cost you everything.
- 6:16But I pray that that love would just transform us.
- 6:21That our lives would look different and would look like
- 6:26love, would look like you. That provides for each other,
- 6:31that supports those in need, that reaches out where we see
- 6:34the need for it. Our Lord, soften our hearts with
- 6:38your generosity, for we are your children and we love you.
- 6:43And we pray all of this in your name, Amen.
