Latest / LOYAL TO THE CRAFT / Electric Callboy Interview: Chaos, Trust, and Finding Frank Zummo
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Mike from Lowells of the Craft here with the guys from Electric Call Boy.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: Last year we interviewed Frank from his perspective about how this all came together in the frenzy of finding a drummer last minute in Australia and not only the nerves and commitment, but the musicianship that it took Frank to step in.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: I've been really excited to talk to you guys and hear from your perspective.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Take us back to that day in Australia when you first play with Frank.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: What was going on?
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: What was the energy like, and how'd you feel?
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, I was like woke up by our manager at like 5:30 in the morning.
- 0:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was pretty early.
- 0:34SPEAKER_04: He was like knocking at the door and he was like, You have to come down, uh, David is gone.
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: Sweaty, completely panicking.
- 0:43SPEAKER_04: Yes, like smoking cigarettes on the hallway.
- 0:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, two of them.
- 0:50SPEAKER_04: Two of them and uh yeah, we go down, and I was like, What David is gone?
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: I don't know, because the evening before I was like having some dinner with him, and everything seems okay.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: I we don't know.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: So we get down and then everyone was like sitting in on the tables, like uh very curious.
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: We've been sitting there for quite some time and then rejoined.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and then yeah.
- 1:13SPEAKER_04: So David is gone.
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: What what should we do now?
- 1:16SPEAKER_04: I was like, Hell, I don't know.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then it was actually was pure chaos.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: I can tell you.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: Like just imagine like flying all the way to Australia just to get like a message like that that our drummer is not gonna play with us and he's already on her on his way home.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, I just remember that you and your was it your tour manager?
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: I'm not I'm not quite sure.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Uh Isla, our band assistant, new tank, your tour manager.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: So that that was like the connection that was made that morning, and then she was like, Yeah, I can ask Frank because like they're not gonna be able to play because Derek got sick.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: He had I don't know what it was.
- 2:04SPEAKER_04: So yeah, just imagine there were two tables.
- 2:06SPEAKER_04: The one was the Sum 41 table and the electric cover table, and both tables were the sit people were sitting like fuck should what should we do?
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: Like he was bored because no show, and we was like Yeah, you had to stay in Australia, right?
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we need a drummer, and then it was like looking at the other table.
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, something, and then I I mean Tank was the guy who was like asking first.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because like the connection to her was actually there, they they knew each other, and then he was like, Fuck, yeah.
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: I mean that that situation was so funny because Frank was like, give me six hours, don't talk to me, I'll do it.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and to be honest, like at that moment, like the thing is right now, it's actually we are meeting a lot of persons that we were looking up to, like on festivals, on so many shows, and I mean there's that saying, like, never met meet your heroes, but I was starstruck, I can tell you, because like meeting the the drummer of Sum 41, one of our like youth bands, we grew up with that kind of music and with that band.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: And I don't know, then we got the message then that the drummer of Sum 41 is gonna play with us on stage, our set, and I mean the rest of history right now.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: We have friends and hanging out all the time.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: But and we we do do you remember we try to get to be very cool in this moment, yeah.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: Like to be like the coolest guy, the coolest the coolest guy with this, you know, like hey, nice to meet you, nice to meet you, Frank.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Trying to be cool, yeah.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: In the gym, and Ayla messaged me and she's like, Where are you?
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: I need to talk to you right now, and it was like all serious, and I'm just like, What else could be wrong?
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: We canceled this tour, things are not good, but worse, um and I was literally like laying on a yoga mat, finishing a workout at five in the morning?
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Yes, what jet lag, jet lag, okay, okay.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Um, and she's like, Hey, do you know Electric Call Boy?
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, Yeah, they're awesome.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: And she goes, Well, they have a situation with their drummer, they want to know if you're still here, A.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: B, if you go meet them for breakfast now because they need a drummer tonight.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, Let's go, I'm in.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: So we went to breakfast and I met two of you and Pascal.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think I didn't meet Kevin and Daniel till the venue.
- 4:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: And I didn't know who was who.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: Like, I didn't know because you guys had some of the crew with you, some of the I didn't know who was in the band, who was the crew.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: I sat down, met everybody, and um I was like, yeah, like this is why I'm here.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: And the weirdest thing, I don't know if we talked about this on the pod, was on the way to that city, I was at the airport, and I'm seeing corn, all the bands at the airport, we're all at TSA, and I literally was I put it out in the universe.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: I was like, man, with all these bands here, wouldn't it be amazing if something happened if I was able to like play?
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: I put it into the universe, and literally the next morning, this happened.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: I manifested it somehow.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: It's all your fault.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: It's all my fault.
- 5:21SPEAKER_05: I manifested it.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: What did it feel like for you guys walking on stage?
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Mix of excitement, nerves.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Obviously, you said looking up to Sum 41 and having their drummer be your drummer for the night.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: What was what were the emotions like?
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Well, I I think the first word that would come to mind is actually I was a bit intimidated because, like, first of all, like doing a headline slot that was not supposed to be our slot.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: That was the first thing that was actually pretty, yeah, like I said, very intimidating because like as a band, you always have that feeling of these guys are waiting for some 41, not for electric callboy, you know what I mean?
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: And we got their spot, which is super great, and it was a great show.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: Then I was actually, I don't know.
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, it was just six hours of learning new songs that I think a couple of them you never heard of.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: Like I mean, I was familiar with three songs because I played them in DJ sets, but I didn't like know the drum parts.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I was actually afraid because even the best drummers on earth, even for them, it's just like such a small amount of time for a whole set to learn.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I mean uh he did a great job, really, and I'm I'm so happy that we that we met him.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was insane.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like Frank sitting on the drums on the left side, you have your had your like laptop or something, you were like playing with some notes, and but yeah, it was it was I was afraid, I was a bit scared, I was way more nervous than than I usually am because the thing is, we as a band we are very familiar with each other and we know each other very well, and like having someone sitting behind you that you don't know, even though he's a legendary drummer, it's it's not the situation that you want to throw yourself into when it comes to headlining a festival.
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: But uh, and from the musical perspective, it's like I mean the drums are always for me the the engine, the engine.
- 7:16SPEAKER_04: Like totally.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: This needs to be good, and then the band is good.
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 7:21SPEAKER_04: So, and uh when Frank like hit the first note, first time we played together, I was like, okay, he can he he will do it, he will do it.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: No problem, he hit as hard as he can, and yeah.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: So, walk me through from that moment walking off stage, the evolution of the band here today, a year later.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: How's it feel still having him play your drums?
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: I see, and I and I've known Frank for a long time, and it's like he was born for this band.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: This is the type of music that Frank Zumo plays and is is meant to be playing.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Well, I I would actually say that um I would I mean love at first sight, that sounds so fucking cheesy, but I mean, we got along very well pretty soon, and we all had had the feeling that he's like his way of commitment is just crazy.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: So he was like throwing everything into it like from the first very first moment and till now.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's he's doing everything a hundred percent always, and he's I don't know, like a missing piece, I can tell you.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: So, right now, I I would say we're not just a band, and he's not just a fill-in drummer, we are friends, we are a band, and it's it's just great to have an on have him on board.
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, and it was like our first thought when so after that Australia thing, we played two shows with David or one?
- 8:42SPEAKER_04: Was it just escalation?
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: I think it was just escalation.
- 8:45SPEAKER_04: I was playing video shoot for a lot of things.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and then something happened, and uh the first thing we all had in mind is like ask Frank.
- 8:54SPEAKER_04: So nothing to like think about, just get Frank over it.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: I'm not even thinking about it anymore.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: That's great.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and you have this you you have to have this this vibe in the band, you know.
- 9:08SPEAKER_04: So because we all know each other for that long time, you need to have this right sense of humor, you know, it's like a little bit different.
- 9:16SPEAKER_04: Frank has another band and stuff, and this fits perfectly.
- 9:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you're not in a lot about trust, actually.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know, like I said, like his commitment to to the band and to like always giving everything.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: This is actually exactly what we are doing.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: So yeah, just fits perfectly.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and the vibe, you guys are living together on the road, you're on tour.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: And talk talk to me about starting the band and having the dreams of doing what you guys are doing now.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: Talk about commitment, you talk about vibe and energy and the motivation to go out there and do it and put yourself in that situation and the trust that you have to have.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: I we work a lot with the youth, and I think it's really important for the youth to know there's opportunities everywhere, and just the networking factor of Ian Tank knowing somebody from the Sum 41 camp.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of young kids look at it and it's like, well, I come from a small town, or I don't have the confidence to go out there and put myself out there.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: But really, anything can happen if you put yourself out there and have the commitment and the trust, crazier things can happen.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: And look at where you guys are at now together.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: It's such an amazing evolution for the band and Frank.
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it is.
- 10:24SPEAKER_04: I mean, we are from a town called Castro Broxel, and I think the most German don't even know that city.
- 10:29SPEAKER_04: So they can't even pronounce it.
- 10:31SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 10:33SPEAKER_04: And uh yeah, I think just yeah, if you have enough effort and stuff, so well I think I can just talk for me, but I think it's the same for you.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: First of all, you need to love what you're doing.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: So uh when I like the first time I went on stage, I was sorry for my language, but I was pissing and pooping my pants.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: Like I can remember like it was yesterday.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: It was just one of the worst moments of my life.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Standing there, like grabbing the phone like this, and just oh am I gonna survive this.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: But after the first song, I started to feel comfortable because I recognized I don't know, like this is a surrounding that I like.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: It makes total sense.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: And the second thing that I that I would mention is actually being on tour.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: If you don't like it, if you don't like to be on tour, if you don't like to be on a tour bus or in a little van, this is how it started for us, like driving in a van through the whole through whole Europe and and more.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: And if you are not cool with that kind of life, this is nothing for you.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: But if you love it, like every second, even though it's getting like you're gonna have bad days, like sitting sick in a in a van, like everybody's sick, puking, and I don't know, like the worst things you can imagine.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: But or hate your band members, yeah.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: Sometimes but after like even even after I don't know for how many years we're gonna like 16-17 years of of being a musician, I can tell you this is still what I like the most.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: This is like all about passion, and I think if you have the passion and the consistency, can you say it like that?
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it's the right word to go on.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: Um, I mean you have to have your goals, but never think of I want to be successful, like no matter what.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: This is my this is my goal.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: I think the first thing that you need to do is learn your instrument or your vocals or whatever it is, and be passionate about it.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I mean just do whatever you like to do with your heart.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: And yeah.
- 12:38SPEAKER_03: Maybe you're lucky enough to to be successful, maybe not.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: It's I mean there's no recipe for it.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: That's the worst thing, actually.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: It's all a combination of talent, luck, commitment.
- 12:51SPEAKER_03: All together maybe it works, maybe not.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: We had the luck.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: I mean, but yeah, I think it sounds actually it sounds not that happy, but it it's it's it's the truth.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: It's the truth.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: And if you're passionate and you're committed, you you get there.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: And I think it's something to speak on, you know, for Frank, being a diverse musician, you know, he was able to, in the early days, play jazz gigs on a cruise ship and then play in Sum 41 and then DJ and now play soon again.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: What are you saying?
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: They they they both have their jazz room.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: This room is like the jazz room.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: I thought he was saying you're gonna have to go play jazz because it's not working out with their electric copy.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: That's a funny evolution project.
- 13:32SPEAKER_03: Such a funny evolution because it started all because I wanted to have a warmup room.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: That was before Frank was in the band.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: And then I got that warm up room and Frank joined the band, and that warm-up room turned into a drum and vocal warm-up room.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: But this is actually then we kicked out the vocal test.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: This is right now, it's actually their room, and you have to knock on the door, like, can I come in, please?
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: And now he has a giant amp that we just crank and play, we just jam.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's it's pretty funny.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: Because the festival run, it was just you and me.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'd be on my warmer kit and you'd just be doing vocal exercises.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but but the thing is, it actually like that there's like something in my head switched.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: Usually I was always like, I don't know, I'm still focused, don't get me wrong, but I had to warm up on my own and I had to do it an hour long.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: But right now it's it's not like this anymore.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: For me, it's just like getting ready, getting dressed up, and do some lip rolls and some some warm-ups, and it's enough for me.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: So I actually don't need that room anymore.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: You won't get it.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: So yeah, he he owns it right now.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: It's uh yeah.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Well, it's a great story, and it's inspired me, and I know a lot of other people, like hearing Frank's perspective of it, like I said, the podcast we did about a year ago inspired a lot of people.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: And I think these little nuggets of talking about being in the music industry for the youth, especially, being dependable, work ethic, and all those things that you hear your parents and teachers talk about, it really is true.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: And this is you know, exactly living proof of that happening in real time and in real life.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: So appreciate you guys sharing your perspective and your story with us here for sure.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: Very welcome.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Heck yeah.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: We've got some school of rock students over here watching.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: No.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Do any of you have any questions for the band from with a conversation we just had, you know, the stories I told you earlier?
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Anything that you guys want to know, now's your chance.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: And we got Julian as well.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Hello.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: Anyone?
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Feel free.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna I'm gonna bring this microphone over and you guys can go ahead and ask anything, or not anything.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: I won't say anything on their behalf, but go for it.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Pass it on.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: A couple questions each if you guys have anything.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: When you first went on tour, what was the scariest part?
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: Scariest part of going on tour?
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, for me, my first real tour was when I was 21.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: I went to Europe like with my uncle's band, playing big shows, first time on a tour bus, first time with a drum tech, like having to play these big shows um and go to a somewhere so far away, you know, and be gone and all this stuff, just all of that.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: Um that was like and then quickly got on stage, played the first show, and it was like amazing, and it just felt like exactly the right place I wanted to be for sure.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: Was it just a question for him, or did you want to wanna hear all the stories?
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: Everybody.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Everybody.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: So scariest, scariest thing.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: I would I would actually say exactly the same.
- 16:28SPEAKER_03: I was always taking like or being afraid of my voice.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: Um my biggest fear is actually till today I can handle it way better, but back in the days it was actually a very, very scary thing for me because I was always caring about my voice too much.
- 16:46SPEAKER_03: And I always thought I'm not good enough, you know, and that there are like way better singers on earth, and why should I be here?
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: And I don't know, I was just questioning myself and my talent and everything that I actually want to do.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: Um what helps me the most was actually that there were so many people that were pushing me forward, like my friends, my family, even my band members, and having that kind of trust from all of them and giving you the feeling of you are enough, you're actually really good in what you're doing.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: That was actually one of the things that took away all that fear from from me.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 17:25SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, I think my inner demons.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: I think you're liars because the scariest thing is you're in the middle of the set and we have to use the toilet very bad.
- 17:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that is that is scary.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: So we drink a lot of liquid on stage, and it's an almost a two-hour show.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: And when you're playing, you don't realize, but then when you come off to do a costume change, you're like, just let it be really bad right now.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: And the dress room is you see how far this is to the stage.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: Um honestly, like you are so soaked in sweat, you can just let it be.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: Nobody would notice like Estronotes, you know?
- 18:06unknown: Awesome.
- 18:08unknown: Cast the mic.
- 18:09SPEAKER_05: How did you guys discover your passion for music?
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: Oh wow, that's for me.
- 18:15SPEAKER_04: It's an example.
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: For me, it's very easy to tell because my dad was a musician.
- 18:19SPEAKER_04: So I got into this music scene, blues and jazz and everything through my dad.
- 18:24SPEAKER_04: So I played what was it called?
- 18:27SPEAKER_04: Flute?
- 18:28SPEAKER_04: Is it flute?
- 18:28SPEAKER_04: Like the woot flute this morning.
- 18:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:31SPEAKER_04: I started with this, and then with the.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: No, and that's uh that's why I am into music, and I always started a band in in in school when I was like 12 or something.
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: It was my first band, and we played out in in front of all the school kids, and yeah.
- 18:52SPEAKER_03: No, I played guitar at this time, so but it's actually the same for me.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Like my my dad was used to be a singer as well, and I was listening to a lot of LPs back in the days because he had a great collection of so many bands and artists.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: But when I noticed that I want to make music, that that's actually a funny story.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: It all started with how old are you?
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: Like, do you remember?
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: Do you know Disc Man?
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: Do you know what that is?
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: So maybe yes, you do.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there was some something back in the days that was called C D.
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: So well, the thing is, the thing is, I was literally sitting there like with my disc man and headphones on, and I was singing along.
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: I don't remember which song it was, but my my aunt came over and she was like, That sounds actually not not that bad.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: It's actually pretty good.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: And that was actually not the part where I started singing.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: I uh started playing drums in like a what is it called?
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: Like school band.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: Um that was my first instrument, and then years after I just uh started started singing, but it I think same like Daniel, it all started with my with my father.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:01SPEAKER_04: Did you have a band in like when you were in school?
- 20:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 20:05SPEAKER_04: Like uh Okay.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: Actually a school band.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: Like we we had like a couple of gigs during during school time.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, me and Daniel too.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: Because for example, me and the bassist Daniel, we know each other from I don't know when we are like going to school, like little kids and stuff.
- 20:19SPEAKER_04: And we started a band and we were like, um we don't go to the teacher's lessons or stuff.
- 20:25SPEAKER_04: We're like playing making music instead.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: So Daniel was playing the drums, Daniel was playing the drums, yeah.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: Everyone was playing the drums.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: A lot of drummers in Electric Hallboy, hence why we have other drums that people play.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: And then like when I got in the band, he helped me learn some of the rhythms because I couldn't figure them out, and he taught me some of the beats.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: Like I'd film his feet and hands to learn how to do it because I couldn't pick it out from listening to it.
- 20:51SPEAKER_04: I played drums at the Revelie uh video shoot.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's he's the drummer in the Reverie music video, and he also writes all the drum parts, which is really cool because it's coming from like the songwriter part.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: So it was the same thing in Sum 41.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Derek would write a lot of the drum parts, and when I listened to it, I'm like, for the first time, I'm like, that's what I I wouldn't do that, but there's gotta be a reason why this is here, and then when I understood it was because of a a melody or a lyric, or it it had sense to do with the songwriting, not just like and it made it even more interesting, even though it was a little weird for me to understand.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: But he programs and makes some crazy drum beats that are almost not human sometimes.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: But I mean, hands down, hands down, you are editing or edit so many cool things, yeah, like your own style into the you brought a lot of your own style into the songs.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: I mean it just it just happened just just I didn't even think about it.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: Just like that's what I just instinctually wanted to play.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: And when I did it in rehearsal, I didn't get the look.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: That you never want to get.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: You don't want to ever have people like, because you also don't want to take them.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: What the fuck are you doing?
- 22:05SPEAKER_04: I'm always the guy who's like if you want to play it like this.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, you were in a band with your former drummer for a long time and you're used to the way that is.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: So I don't want to come in and take them out of their what they're used to.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: Um, obviously it's gonna be different, but you don't want it to be so different that they're just taken off and then they're not doing their show because they're so whatever.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: Obviously, the first show was just a whirlwind for all of us because of the timing.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: And like what was really great about these guys was literally we come off stage and I go in the dressing room and they're like, okay, for tomorrow, let's work on this, this, you know, this was you played four on the floor, but it's supposed to be half time, and like whatever.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: So it was like right away, no BS.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: It was just like to the point.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and they gave me notes and homework, and I was so adrenaline.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: I woke up at like three in the morning and just started working on it again in the hotel room before we went to the airport.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: And I can tell you, we we've been so afraid of telling him.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: Well, the thing is, usually we we we Germans are pretty honest, so um, and we are a bunch of perfectionists, so whenever something is wrong during the set, we have to talk about it and we have to adjust it.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: And uh, that was actually we we've been talking, like, how could we tell him you tell this was not right without being rude?
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, like he did a great job, but but that was just so different.
- 23:31SPEAKER_03: We didn't like it, we have to tell him, and then we just didn't.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: He was like, guys, this is your band, it's your songs, it's totally fine.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: I just want to do my job.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: Did you guys ever mess with him with the language barrier?
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: I'm sure he's caught on to some of the you know language barrier things now, but at the beginning, were you guys speaking around uh messing with him at all?
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: Oh well, I'm I mean, I think I would say that like we are not the typical Germans.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: I think we we are able to talk good good enough English to uh to understand each other.
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: But uh well the thing is we're gonna switch from time to time we switch to German.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: You can't control it because we need to speak a lot of English, but um like when we are sitting together and there's something funny happening or something, and or we just I mean, just like a quick chat, you switch to German without even thinking about it.
- 24:22SPEAKER_04: Um from time to time he's just sitting there like Yeah, but then he bought his like uh glasses, the the metaglasses, and then like meta glasses where they go.
- 24:35SPEAKER_02: But then when I put them on, they just start messing with me and just talking a bunch of smack to just you know just say wild stuff.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: So it usually backfires.
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, something like, hey, we we need to get rid of him, you know.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: He's such a bad drama, he's so bad.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: But I do like what I do like about it though is like the third show I did with the guys at the festival, it was three festivals in three different cities in in Australia.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: There was problems with production.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: So in our in-ears, we can hear all the crew talking.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: And when you're in the zone to play, like when I was in Sum 41, if I heard in my in-ears, like, hey guys, this isn't working right now, the show, or you're not gonna have this tonight because we couldn't get it working and changeover, it would bum me out to hear that because you're on such a high.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: So I kind of could tell something was going on, but they're all talking, the crew's talking in German, and I'm like, I'm glad I don't know the language because it's not bumming me out now because I don't know, like I don't know, they're about they're sitting there back and forth, and I'm just like, all right, I'm just gonna pretend I don't know what's going on, and and it's it's fine.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: But um it's just it's such a different um vibe.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: Like, so Sum 41 joined us, so we we covered still waiting.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: And when we played LA, Derek came out and sang it and surprised the arena.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: The other night in Toronto, Dave Brown sound came out, played guitar, surprised people.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: So in Sum 41, it was like five minutes before our intro tape rolls.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: We all walk out to stage, fist bump, go on.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: These guys go to stage like 15 minutes early.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: So now that I'm part of this pre-show, just such a fun thing that we do, I told Derek Brown Sound, I was like, You gotta come and experience this, and just to watch their expressions, like we get crazy.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: There's hard techno music blasting in our ears.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: We have all secret handshakes we do each other, and we pump each other up with the crew, and it's so fun, but like it was so awesome to see the Sum 41 guys, and they were just all about it and loving it, like smiling.
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: You know, to imagine it like when you're watching an NBA game, like they're doing all those handshakes right before the game and hyping each other up.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: And this is something what we are doing every night, because even though you're having a bad day and it happens, um it's still like like the hour before the show is our time.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: Like we are together, no matter what, and everybody got his other others back, and uh so yeah, this is actually so important for us to to hype us up and giving us like or like getting into the right mood to to play the show no matter how you're feeling.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, this is actually where this came from.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: Um let's see.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Aside from actually playing music, what is your favorite part of touring?
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Getting to see the world.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, that's amazing.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: I mean music has taken us to the craziest places that you never thought you would ever go.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: And it's it's pretty amazing that music, the power of music, like our art gets us, you know, to gets, you know, we get to go there.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: Um, so I think that's just the most amazing thing.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: And then for me personally, like, you know, I have children now to get to bring my children all over the world to get to see stuff.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: Like, I I didn't leave America until I was 21 years old or 22.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: So like it's really cool to have give my kids this experience.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: Um, and we like embrace it.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: We when we're in these places, my kids study beforehand and we go and I'm learning.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Like, I've been to London a million times, but I don't I couldn't tell you why this building is there.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: My kids are learning and they're explaining it to me.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: So, like, I'm getting an education and stuff, so that's pretty cool.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's like uh for me is the the same.
- 28:36SPEAKER_04: I I don't have kids, but like seeing the world and being able to like go to countries you will never visit a normal life.
- 28:43SPEAKER_04: For example, I don't know.
- 28:44SPEAKER_04: I've if we wouldn't play in Australia, I think I've never seen this country, so yeah, this is amazing.
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: I would actually add like it's not just about making music, it's right now we have the freedom to like create something on stage, and for me it's actually that's another part that I like see how much our crew is growing, like they're like still more people tour after tour, um, so many hardworking and like very creative, very talented people, and seeing every night what they are doing like from scratch, it started all in our heads, and to see everything that we have created while sitting together on at on a table, um to see that every night, it's it's it actually makes me very proud.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: And and this is something that I love very much about touring, because it's not just about the music, it's just I don't know, like all the shit that you have in your head, you can actually make it possible right now.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: It's a cool thing, yeah.
- 29:50unknown: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: What was like the biggest lesson you guys had to learn like going on tour, then how did you guys navigate that?
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: That's a good question.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: That's a smart question, man.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: I I actually have to think about it.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: Do you have do you have an answer right now?
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: Like well I have one even though I I said it already, but um well I would say no matter how many people are trying to get you down, how no matter how how life can be, um touring actually sh is showing me always um that there's always a good side.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: It sounds a bit weird, but even though you have like even when you have the worst day on earth, once I'm entering the stage, I'm at my on my happy pl in my happy place.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: It's just I don't know, it's like healing, sealing my soul.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: So I don't know, being surrounded by friends, we're not just a band, we are actually friends, and I don't know if it's a learning, it's more like this is what I love the most about touring, I guess.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: Like um, yeah.
- 31:07SPEAKER_03: I I actually I said it already, it's all about passion, and I love what we're doing, and I think it's the same for you.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, even if there are hard times, there's always something to yeah, worth fighting for, I would say.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: Like, and I don't know.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think just I talk about this at my workshops with the school of rock kids, and then you know it's also the thing to learn about touring is you could be the greatest musician in the world.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: That's one part of it.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: The other part of it is we have to live together in small spaces, tour buses, like we have to know etiquette, respect for people, because if you if you can't do all that other stuff and work well, it's not gonna work out.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: It doesn't matter how talented you are, you have to know how to like that's when you know I started playing with with you guys at the summer festivals.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: It was like, let's just do this and let's this the first time we're gonna be living together, working together, spending all this time together.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: Like, let's see how it goes and then have a conversation if it's gonna continue after this festival run.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: And we knew like halfway through, we're like, okay, this works.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: Like, we didn't really need the meeting wound up being about the tour and what the drum solo and production, like, we didn't have to have that kind of like awkward meeting because we're just like it works because it's that's a thing.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: You live with people, etiquette, respect, all of these things.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: Like, there's just so much that goes into it, like, especially with an operation this big.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, when we just toured this in in Europe, we had a hundred plus people on the road with us, you know, it was a massive operation with a lot of moving parts, everybody's heavily involved, and it's just like you know, it it either works or it doesn't, but it's also like just knowing that very good point.
- 33:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, that's something like I mean, it's it's about about teamwork, you have to like work together.
- 33:12SPEAKER_04: The learning is like I I don't know, I I make I did some music with people I didn't like, so that was always hard.
- 33:20SPEAKER_04: And for me, it's like the best thing to be on tour with your best friends and family, and that's the most important thing.
- 33:26SPEAKER_04: And for me, the learning is like you can't, I mean, you have to love the people you work with, so and especially the people in your band.
- 33:38SPEAKER_04: So if this is cool for you and you are friends and everything, then you can make good music together, and if not, I don't know, yeah.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: Honestly, it's not all even if we are friends, we have some tough times still.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is another learning, you have to learn how to how to fight, like how to have a good argument.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: So you're not always on the same page, but you have to find a deal, find a way to to move on.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: And this is very important because like being in a band means there's no space for egomaniacs, like not at all.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: Like you are a part of something, and nobody, and this is something that's actually the biggest learning.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: Like, nobody is more important than the other one.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: We're a team, we're all on the same level, we're doing this together, and there's like I said, there's no space for like some like ego trips and skyrocket high to the like wearing your nose up in the sky, you know.
- 34:41SPEAKER_03: That's it's just not possible.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: And I think it I mean in our band, it's not possible.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: They I think there are some bands out there, but are less success.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: That's the success why this band works and why the band is at where it's at now is because exactly what you just said, and like it's you know, it's the most comments I've ever gotten from family, friends, fans.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: Like, when you look at our pictures from the show, that's not us acting, like that is not pure stage.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: It's not stage, it's pure joy and fun.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: Like the things him and Kevin say every night, like they just go, they say whatever they're feeling, and it's real and it's in the emotion, which it's for me, it's been such a treat because we've been doing English speaking shows for a while, but I miss all that stuff when they're in you know German because it's just the chemistry and how wild and fun it is.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: It's like I've said this so many times like I play with so many artists, I've been so blessed to play with so many great artists, legends, bands, all that.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: This is the first time in my life this band unlocks some kind of joy in me that I didn't even know was there.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: And it's like to have my own wife be like, I've never seen you smile that much when you're performing.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: Like, it's so cool that it's unlocked that.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: It's it's so fun and and so aggressive, like how heavy it is, but it's so fun at the same time.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: And like, you know, I grew up a theater kid.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: My grandfather had a theater.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: I used to, you know, act and be stage manager.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: So when people are like, wow, that's crazy, you're wearing all these costumes.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I used to do this as a kid.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: I just this was before social media and everything.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: So like I'm channeling the little boy that used to be in plays and put on these outfits and stuff, so it's like it's not weird for me.
- 36:36SPEAKER_05: Look how goofy I look.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: Full circle.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: Thank you guys.
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, sure, you're very welcome.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: You inspired?
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: Sweet.
- 36:49SPEAKER_04: I have a question.
- 36:50SPEAKER_04: Like, what's your favorite instrument?
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, or what instruments are you gonna play or learn?
- 36:56SPEAKER_04: Piano?
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: Nice one.
- 36:59SPEAKER_03: Guitar, perfect.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: I mainly play bass, but I love to play drums.
- 37:11SPEAKER_03: You look like a drum guy.
- 37:13SPEAKER_03: Definitely.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: I play drums, but I want to learn bass.
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: Maybe you can do both together.
- 37:20unknown: Yeah.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: Like the first one on earth.
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: We're having auditions tomorrow for our new jazz project.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: So you guys got 10 bases.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: Cool of Rock and Julian.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: Thank you guys for joining us.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: Electric Cowboy, thank you so much for letting us come into your home for the day and ask you questions and inspire the youth and talk to us about Frank.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, dude, that was fun.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: Super fun.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to see you guys crushed tonight.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: Soundcheck was amazing.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: You guys sounded spot on.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: It was really cool to see in real life, not just on videos.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: Frank playing with you guys, and it's so cool.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: Appreciate you guys letting us come in today.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: Appreciate it.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 37:54SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: Um, and thank you guys for uh for listening.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: You guys have to skip school for this?
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: Sweet.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 38:03SPEAKER_02: What a day.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: I think cool, like the main message too, right?
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: Is like chase your dreams, be a good person, network, and learn from moments like this.
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: This is what Loyal to the Craft's all about.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: Frank and I have been really passionate about this sort of stuff for a long time, bringing the youth in to see that you know this is actually possible.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: It looks larger than life.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, never give up.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: It looks larger than life behind the scenes, and a lot of it is is a lot of production, but there's so many sustainable career paths in music, and our our ambition and goal is to show and shine light on that.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: So, again, appreciate you guys sharing your stories with us.
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: Appreciate your work, man.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: It's uh so cool.
