- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a new week.
- 0:15It's Monday the 13th of January 2025 and it's great to have your
- 0:21company because we are starting out on another week together as
- 0:24we continue to work our way through God's Word.
- 0:28Not from the beginning to the end, not from anyone place to
- 0:31any other place in particular, but just going through 1 chapter
- 0:35of one book at a time to set our lives to the rhythm of God's
- 0:39Word. And at the moment we are
- 0:41continuing to read through the Book of First Kings.
- 0:45And today is one of those wonderful chapters where
- 0:48everything is going well and God is just showing his hand as an
- 0:53abundant blesser. And we see this through the eyes
- 0:56of the Queen of Sheba who is blown away by his phenomenal
- 1:00wealth and success and wisdom. So let us enjoy this peak, peak
- 1:06peak moment of Israelite civilisation as we hear of the
- 1:10splendour of King Solomon in First Kings chapter 10.
- 1:24When the Queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's fame, which brought
- 1:28honour to the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard
- 1:31questions. She arrived in Jerusalem with a
- 1:34large group of attendants and a great caravan of camels loaded
- 1:38with spices, large quantities of gold and precious jewels.
- 1:43When she met with Solomon, she talked with him about everything
- 1:46she had on her mind. Solomon had answers for all her
- 1:50questions. Nothing was too hard for the
- 1:52king to explain to her. When the Queen of Sheba realised
- 1:56how very wise Solomon was and when she saw the palace he had
- 2:00built, she was overwhelmed. She was also amazed at the food
- 2:05on his tables, the organisation of his officials and their
- 2:08splendid clothing, the cup bearers and the burnt offering
- 2:12Solomon made at the Temple of the Lord.
- 2:15She exclaimed to the king. Everything I heard in my country
- 2:19about your achievements and wisdom is true.
- 2:22I didn't believe what was said until I arrived here and saw it
- 2:26with my own eyes. In fact, I had not heard the
- 2:29half of it. Your wisdom and prosperity are
- 2:33far beyond what I was told. How happy your people must be.
- 2:38What a privilege for your officials to stand here day
- 2:41after day listening to your wisdom.
- 2:45Praise the Lord your God who delights in you and has placed
- 2:50you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord's eternal
- 2:53love for Israel, He has made you king so you can rule with
- 2:58justice and righteousness. Then she gave the king a gift of
- 3:029000 lbs of gold, great quantities of spices and
- 3:07precious jewels. Never again were so many spices
- 3:12brought in as those the Queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.
- 3:17In addition, Haram's ships brought gold from OFA and also
- 3:22brought rich cargoes of red sandalwood and precious jewels.
- 3:26The king used the sandalwood to make railings for the Temple of
- 3:29the Lord and the royal palace and to construct lyres and harps
- 3:34for the musicians. Never before or since has there
- 3:38been such a supply of sandalwood.
- 3:41King Solomon gave the Queen of Sheba whatever she asked for,
- 3:45besides all the customary gifts he had so generously given.
- 3:49Then she and all her attendants returned to their own land.
- 3:55Each year Solomon received about 25 tonnes of gold.
- 4:00This did not include the additional revenue he received
- 4:03from merchants and traders, all the kings of Arabia and the
- 4:07governors of the land. King Solomon made 200 large
- 4:11Shields of hammered gold, each weighing more than £15.
- 4:16He also made 300 smaller Shields of hammered gold, each weighing
- 4:21nearly 4 lbs. The king placed these Shields in
- 4:25the palace of the Forest of Lebanon.
- 4:29Then the king made a huge throne decorated with ivory and
- 4:33overlaid with fine gold. The throne had 6 steps and a
- 4:37rounded back. There were armrests on both
- 4:41sides of the seat and the figure of a lion stood on each side of
- 4:44the throne. There were also 12 other lines,
- 4:481 standing on each end of the six steps.
- 4:51No other throne in all the world could be compared with it.
- 4:56All of King Solomon's drinking cups were solid gold, as were
- 5:00all the utensils in the palace of the Forest of Lebanon.
- 5:04They were not made of silver, for silver was considered
- 5:07worthless. In Solomon's day, the king had a
- 5:10fleet of trading ships of Tarshish that sailed with
- 5:14Hiram's fleet. Once every three years.
- 5:17The ships returned loaded with gold, silver, ivory, apes and
- 5:22Peacocks. So King Solomon became richer
- 5:26and wiser than any other king on earth.
- 5:31People from every nation came to consult him and to hear the
- 5:35wisdom God had given him. Year after year, everyone who
- 5:39visited brought him gifts of silver and gold, clothing,
- 5:43weapons, spices, horses and mules.
- 5:48Solomon built up a huge force of Chariots and horses.
- 5:53He had 1400 Chariots and 12,000 horses.
- 5:58He stationed some of them in the chariot cities and some near him
- 6:02in Jerusalem. The king made silver as
- 6:06plentiful in Jerusalem as stone and valuable.
- 6:10Cedar timber was as common as the Sycamore fig trees that grew
- 6:14in the foothills of Judah. Solomon's horses were imported
- 6:18from Egypt and from Sicilia. The King's traders acquired them
- 6:23from Cecilia at the standard price.
- 6:26At that time, Chariots from Egypt could be purchased for 600
- 6:30pieces of silver and the horses for 150 pieces of silver.
- 6:35They were then exported to the kings of the Hittites and the
- 6:38kings of Aram. Our Lord, Such opulence, such
- 6:52splendour, like a blessed, well oiled machine.
- 6:58This nation ran under the leadership of King Solomon.
- 7:02And as we hear all about the incredible splendour of this
- 7:05Kingdom, we know that that is just a fraction.
- 7:08Just a brief glimpse into your Kingdom, Lord.
- 7:13Your Kingdom which knows no bounds.
- 7:15Your Kingdom with riches beyond anything that we can imagine
- 7:20during our lives here on earth, and your wisdom and generosity
- 7:26beyond anything that we can ever contemplate.
- 7:29And what's more, we have Willy Wonka's golden ticket to come
- 7:34and be a part of that with you forever and ever and ever.
- 7:40Our Lord, your generosity is just beyond our ability to
- 7:44comprehend. And that you would include us in
- 7:47this is just the most incredible gift.
- 7:50Thank you. Thank you for giving us
- 7:52membership in your family and giving us your son Jesus, who
- 7:57made this all possible. We are so grateful to you and to
- 8:02Jesus for everything he has done for us.
- 8:04So we just praise you and thank you.
- 8:07We lift you up and we worship you and pray all of these things
- 8:12in the most holy name of Jesus, Amen.
