- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Thursday.
- 0:15It is the 1st of August. Happy new month to you.
- 0:21I hope you are going well. I hope that today, oh, he's
- 0:25hotting up to be a good one for you, or has been a crackerjack
- 0:29of a day. As you reach the point where you
- 0:32can take a pause, take a moment, open up your device and invite
- 0:37me in so that we together can read this last chapter of John.
- 0:42I imagine John as an old man, having just penned this gospel,
- 0:48sitting down and reading it to an audience.
- 0:52And at the end of the story, a little kid says, but Uncle John,
- 0:57what happened to the disciples? You can't leave it there.
- 1:01We need more. And he said, oh, oh, all right,
- 1:04youngster, I'll let you know. And so then he writes this
- 1:09epilogue. I am making this up.
- 1:10I have no factual or, or historical or theological basis
- 1:15for what I'm saying. This is just me telling a story,
- 1:17just to be clear. And so John records this
- 1:21epilogue about Jesus and his disciples well after his
- 1:26resurrection so that we can understand how Jesus sends them
- 1:30off to begin the church. Yes, that is why you and I are
- 1:35here, because we are part of the global church today that Jesus
- 1:38instituted. Oh yeah.
- 1:40And that that is the epilogue that we will enjoy today.
- 1:44You ready for it? Oh, yeah, me too.
- 1:46Let us read together, friends. John chapter 21.
- 1:59Later Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of
- 2:03Galilee. This said how it happened.
- 2:07Several of the disciples were there.
- 2:09Simon Peter Thomas nicknamed the twin Nathaniel from Cana in
- 2:15Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two other disciples.
- 2:20Simon Peter said, I'm going fishing.
- 2:23Welcome too, they all said. So they went out in the boat,
- 2:28but they caught nothing all night.
- 2:31At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but his disciples
- 2:35couldn't see who he was. He called out, Fellows, have you
- 2:40caught any fish? No, they replied.
- 2:44Then he said, throw out your net on the right hand side of the
- 2:48boat and you'll get some. So they did, and they couldn't
- 2:53haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.
- 2:58Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, It's the Lord.
- 3:03When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his
- 3:07tunic, for he had stripped for work, jumped into the water and
- 3:11headed to shore. The others stayed with the boat
- 3:14and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about
- 3:18100 yards from shore when they got there.
- 3:21They found breakfast waiting for them, fish cooked over a
- 3:24charcoal fire and some bread. Bring some of the fish you've
- 3:29just caught, Jesus said. Sir Simon Peter went aboard and
- 3:33dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and
- 3:39yet the net hadn't torn. Now come and have some
- 3:42breakfast, Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to
- 3:47ask him. Who are you?
- 3:49They knew it was the Lord. Then Jesus served them the bread
- 3:53and the fish. This was the third time Jesus
- 3:56had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from
- 3:58the dead. After breakfast, Jesus asked
- 4:02Simon Peter. Simon, son of John, do you love
- 4:07me more than these? Yes, Lord, Peter replied.
- 4:11You know I love you. Then feed my lambs, Jesus told
- 4:16him. Jesus repeated the question,
- 4:19Simon, son of John, do you love me?
- 4:22Yes, Lord, Peter said, you know I love you, then take care of my
- 4:27sheep. Jesus said a third time.
- 4:31He asked him, Simon, son of John, do you love me?
- 4:36Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time.
- 4:40He said, Lord, you know everything.
- 4:43You know that I love you. Jesus said, then feed my sheep.
- 4:50I tell you the truth, when you were young you were able to do
- 4:54as you liked. You dressed yourself and went
- 4:56wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old you will
- 5:00stretch out your hands and others will dress you and take
- 5:04you where you don't want to go. Jesus said this to let him know
- 5:08by what kind of death he would glorify God.
- 5:11Then Jesus told him, Follow me. Peter turned around and saw
- 5:17behind them the disciple Jesus loved, the one who had leaned
- 5:21over to Jesus during supper and asked, Lord, who will betray
- 5:25you? Peter asked Jesus.
- 5:28What about him? Lord?
- 5:30Jesus replied, I want him to remain alive until I return.
- 5:36What is that to you? As for you, follow me.
- 5:41So the rumour spread among the community of believers that this
- 5:44disciple wouldn't die. But that isn't what Jesus said
- 5:48at all. He only said if I want him to
- 5:51remain alive until I return. What is that to you?
- 5:56This disciple is the one who testifies to these events and
- 6:01has recorded them here, and we know that his account of these
- 6:05things is accurate. Jesus also did many other
- 6:10things. If they were all written down, I
- 6:13suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would
- 6:18be written. Ah Jesus, you are indeed too
- 6:31great for our world to contain. Your majesty flows beyond the
- 6:39horizon, through space, into all time and eternity.
- 6:44You are the God of the universe, not just the God of our little
- 6:48world. And yet somehow, in the
- 6:52magnitude and enormity of all that you are as God and
- 6:57sovereign. Here you are listening, ear bent
- 7:03toward our prayer. Oh, thank you that you would
- 7:07give us Jesus. Thank you, Jesus, that you would
- 7:11come. And thank you, Holy Spirit, that
- 7:13you would stay, that you would stay here in our hearts,
- 7:18teaching us more about Jesus every day and shaping us to be
- 7:23in your service and giving us a compass so that we would know
- 7:29the way to you, to your home and our home.
- 7:36You are a wonderful, wonderful triune God, and we worship you.
- 7:41And we dedicate again our lives to you today, our wonderful
- 7:47Father, our incredible Saviour, and our beautiful Comforter.
- 7:54We pray this in your name, Amen.
