- 0:12Speaker 1: Kings 9.34 As the anointing of the Lord moves through me,
- 0:18Speaker 1: I will not stop until I pray and dismantle the
- 0:21Speaker 1: works of the enemy around me. I will not relent
- 0:25Speaker 1: until until I remove any and all false gods and
- 0:29Speaker 1: idols in my life. I decree and declare that I
- 0:35Speaker 1: will honor you with my whole heart. Unlike Yehu, I
- 0:39Speaker 1: will not walk away from you or your presence. I

- 1:43Speaker 2: The End of a Witch's Story In our last story,
- 1:48Speaker 2: Elisha anointed Jehu as the next king of Israel. Jehu
- 1:52Speaker 2: embraced his role as God's cleansing instrument. Jehu killed King
- 1:57Speaker 2: Joram and King Ahaziah and began his mission to rid
- 2:01Speaker 2: Israel of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel's evil influence. Now
- 2:07Speaker 2: we learn of Jehu's time as king. He is used
- 2:11Speaker 2: by God to heal Israel of all the sickness and
- 2:14Speaker 2: evil it has been plagued with under Jezebel and Ahab.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Jehu would fight for the freedom of Israel. But would
- 2:22Speaker 2: the evil be too much for his human heart? Inspired
- 2:26Speaker 2: by the book of 2 Kings.
- 2:30Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:32Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:35Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
- 2:39Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:42Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:45Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:47Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:50Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 2:53Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 2:56Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 3:00Speaker 3: to get a copy of the Jesus book, simply go
- 3:03Speaker 3: to jackgraham.org slash Jesus. That's jackgraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:11Speaker 3: you for your support. In yesterday's scripture passage, we saw
- 3:15Speaker 3: how God anointed a new king. His name was Jehu.
- 3:20Speaker 3: And this new king ruled Israel with righteousness. Jehu would
- 3:24Speaker 3: avenge the blood of the prophets, put to death by Jezebel,
- 3:27Speaker 3: and would wipe out Ahab, the wicked king's family, beginning
- 3:30Speaker 3: with Israel's king, Joram. God's desire was always for his
- 3:34Speaker 3: people to turn to him rather than the idols they worshipped,
- 3:38Speaker 3: and Jehu would be God's tool to accomplish these purposes.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Today we'll hear how the evil, wicked queen Jezebel finally
- 3:45Speaker 3: faces the consequences of her evil. And we'll learn how
- 3:50Speaker 3: God began to use Jehu to fight to free Israel
- 3:52Speaker 3: from her bondage. But even as God uses Jehu, evil
- 3:57Speaker 3: is still present, threatening to infect the new king's heart.
- 4:01Speaker 3: So let's listen to the word of God today.
- 4:06Speaker 2: The west wind howled furiously. Gray clouds rolled in like
- 4:10Speaker 2: waves on a shore. The sky was eerily dark as
- 4:14Speaker 2: the witch queen Jezebel loomed over her window. It was
- 4:19Speaker 2: open for cold wind to blow in. She stood up straight,
- 4:22Speaker 2: as if challenging the storm to draw closer. She had
- 4:26Speaker 2: heard of the king's demise. She had been told of
- 4:29Speaker 2: Jehu's anointing and how he sent an arrow through her
- 4:32Speaker 2: son's back. Now she waited for him. Her eyes were
- 4:37Speaker 2: painted dark and her hair was fixed for a pagan ritual.
- 4:41Speaker 2: She mumbled to herself silently, her gaze fixed on the
- 4:44Speaker 2: dark horizons. Thunder boomed in the distance as Jehu rode
- 4:49Speaker 2: towards the palace gates. He halted his horse when he
- 4:52Speaker 2: saw Jezebel's dark eyes staring down at him through the
- 4:55Speaker 2: palace window. Age had given her dark hair streaks of gray,
- 5:00Speaker 2: but she maintained a sense of authority and strange power.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Do you come in peace, Kingslayer? You murderous bastard, she shouted.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Jehu looked closely through the opening where Jezebel stood. He
- 5:15Speaker 2: could see two or three slaves behind her, cowering in fear.'
- 5:19Speaker 2: Are any of you on my side?' Jehu shouted to them.'
- 5:23Speaker 2: If it is true freedom you desire, throw her down!'
- 5:28Speaker 2: Before Jezebel could even turn around, the three eunuch slaves
- 5:32Speaker 2: burst towards the window, shoving Jezebel out her window. Her
- 5:37Speaker 2: witch-like screams were drowned out by the distant thunder as
- 5:40Speaker 2: she fell to her death. Her body fell beside the stables.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Her blood covered the walls and the horses. Jehu rode
- 5:49Speaker 2: towards her and crushed her body under the hooves of
- 5:52Speaker 2: his horse. For minutes, Jehu made his horse trample her body.
- 5:57Speaker 2: The sound of cracking bone and squishing flesh filled Jehu's ears.
- 6:03Speaker 2: He paid no attention to it. He and many others
- 6:06Speaker 2: had suffered miserably under Jezebel's wicked rituals. She had killed
- 6:11Speaker 2: many people and stolen the innocence of Israel. All of
- 6:15Speaker 2: Ji Hu's righteous rage that had been pent up for
- 6:18Speaker 2: dozens of years unleashed on her lifeless corpse. As the
- 6:22Speaker 2: thunder boomed, Ji Hu's horse delivered each blow with violent force. Finally,
- 6:29Speaker 2: Ji Hu was finished. Panting heavily, Ji Hu gestured for
- 6:33Speaker 2: his men to bury her. However, all that was left
- 6:36Speaker 2: of her body to bury was her skull, feet, and hands.
- 6:41Speaker 2: The old prophecy of Elijah concerning Jezebel echoed in Jehu's mind.
- 6:46Speaker 2: In the land of Jezreel, dogs will eat Jezebel's body.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Her remains will be scattered like fertilizer so that no
- 6:53Speaker 2: one will remember her. A reckoning was required of Ahab's
- 6:58Speaker 2: entire lineage because of the darkness he brought upon God's people.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Jehu's mission was not yet complete. Because of Ahab's lewdness,
- 7:07Speaker 2: he had sired seventy sons. All of them resided in
- 7:11Speaker 2: the capital of Israel, Samaria. So Jehu sent messages to
- 7:16Speaker 2: the elders of Samaria, saying, I know the king's sons
- 7:20Speaker 2: are with you. Also with you are horses, chariots, fortifications,
- 7:24Speaker 2: and weapons. Choose from among Ahab's sons a king, and
- 7:29Speaker 2: I will face him in battle. The elders were dismayed
- 7:33Speaker 2: at Jehu's letter. Fear shot up their spines. They knew
- 7:38Speaker 2: Jehu had slain two kings himself. Ahab's weak sons could
- 7:42Speaker 2: not face him, let alone rule a kingdom. So they
- 7:45Speaker 2: sent a response to Jehu, saying, We and Ahab's sons
- 7:49Speaker 2: are no match for you. What can we do to
- 7:52Speaker 2: serve you? Jehu thought for a moment. He considered the
- 7:56Speaker 2: cost of sparing the lives of Ahab's sons. However, he
- 8:00Speaker 2: knew that the line must be eradicated. Too much generational
- 8:04Speaker 2: wickedness flowed through their veins. Israel had been sent into
- 8:08Speaker 2: a dark tunnel of despair because of that family. There
- 8:12Speaker 2: was only one way to cleanse Israel of its sickness.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Jehu sent a letter in return saying, If you are
- 8:19Speaker 2: truly on the side of freedom, take the lives of
- 8:22Speaker 2: your master's sons by this time tomorrow. Bring me their heads.
- 8:27Speaker 2: The elders did as Jehu asked. The men that they
- 8:31Speaker 2: had raised since birth were slain for their father's sins.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Their heads were brought to Jehu and then put on
- 8:38Speaker 2: display in front of the gates for all to see.
- 8:41Speaker 2: It was a truly awful sight. No one relished in
- 8:45Speaker 2: the deaths of these men, not even Jehu.
- 8:48Speaker 1: It was the.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Cost of evil. In the morning, Jehu cleared the heads
- 8:53Speaker 2: and gathered the people of Israel. He spoke with boldness. However,
- 8:57Speaker 2: he knew that the people were vulnerable right now. He
- 9:00Speaker 2: must be reassuring.' None of this is your fault,' Jehu said.'
- 9:05Speaker 2: I am the one who killed the king.' You have
- 9:08Speaker 2: been victims of a wicked regime. This carnage is but
- 9:11Speaker 2: a cleansing of that wickedness. Rest assured that this fulfills
- 9:15Speaker 2: the words of God through Elijah. He prophesied that Ahab's
- 9:19Speaker 2: descendants would be cut off from the blessings of Israel.
- 9:22Speaker 2: The killing had taken its toll on Jehu, but it
- 9:25Speaker 2: was not over yet. More relatives, close friends, and advisors
- 9:30Speaker 2: had to perish before the stench of Ahab and Jezebel
- 9:33Speaker 2: was wiped clean. Even visitors from Judah who came to
- 9:36Speaker 2: see the sons of Ahab were taken and killed. More blood,
- 9:42Speaker 2: more killing. Jehu's soul was beginning to feel the weight
- 9:45Speaker 2: of it all. He clung to God. He clung to
- 9:49Speaker 2: the healing of Israel. Soon, Jehu met a traveler by
- 9:53Speaker 2: the name of Jehonadab. He was the founder of the Rechabites,
- 9:57Speaker 2: followers of God dedicated to the pure worship of their Lord.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Both Jehu and Jehonadab detested the pompousness of nobility and riches.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Jehu found great comfort in his friend Jehonadab. The two
- 10:11Speaker 2: of them were friends for a long while, dreaming about
- 10:14Speaker 2: a better Israel. an Israel where men and women lived
- 10:17Speaker 2: freely to worship their God and create a culture of flourishing.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Yet even though Ahab's line had been eradicated, there was
- 10:25Speaker 2: still a lingering sickness in Israel. There were still the
- 10:28Speaker 2: temples of Baal. The false prophets of the false gods
- 10:32Speaker 2: still spread their poisonous doctrine to innocent men and women.
- 10:36Speaker 2: They fed lies of prosperity while sucking the souls of
- 10:39Speaker 2: those that came for help. Jehu would have one final
- 10:43Speaker 2: push to free Israel. Jehu gathered some of the prophets
- 10:46Speaker 2: of Baal for a feast. He gathered them and told
- 10:49Speaker 2: them to invite every man and woman of Baal they
- 10:52Speaker 2: knew to a large gathering. There Jehu would sacrifice to
- 10:56Speaker 2: Baal to pay homage as king. So the prophets gathered
- 10:59Speaker 2: every worshipper of Baal. They were given special robes to
- 11:03Speaker 2: identify themselves as loyal followers to the false god. Then,
- 11:08Speaker 2: while all the followers of Baal were in one place,
- 11:11Speaker 2: Jehu and his men unsheathed their swords and began to
- 11:14Speaker 2: kill every last one of them. The screams were tormented.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Blood filled the room up to Jehu's ankles. Tears streamed
- 11:22Speaker 2: down his face, but his mind was resolute. With one
- 11:26Speaker 2: final wave of strength, Jehu and his men toppled the
- 11:29Speaker 2: statue of Baal, dragging it into the wilderness and set
- 11:32Speaker 2: it on fire. The large temple of Baal was dismantled
- 11:36Speaker 2: and destroyed. In its place, Jehu constructed a public toilet
- 11:41Speaker 2: for all of Israel to use. It would serve as
- 11:43Speaker 2: a continual reminder that no honor would be given to
- 11:46Speaker 2: a false god. The Lord promised to bless Jehu and
- 11:50Speaker 2: his descendants for years to come. Jehu then reigned as
- 11:54Speaker 2: king over Israel for 28 years. It would be lovely
- 11:58Speaker 2: to think Jehu rode off into the future with a
- 12:00Speaker 2: flourishing spirit, honoring God with his whole heart. Unfortunately, The
- 12:05Speaker 2: king who cleansed Israel of so much evil was exposed
- 12:09Speaker 2: to his own inner darkness. After the cleansing of Ahab's
- 12:13Speaker 2: line and the worshippers of Baal, Jehu's heart grew dark
- 12:16Speaker 2: and calloused. He did not pursue God's heart as David
- 12:20Speaker 2: once did. Rather, he half-heartedly ruled. No vision, no obedience.
- 12:26Speaker 2: The kingdom of Israel diminished each year under Jehu's reign.
- 12:30Speaker 2: His time as king served as a reminder that finishing
- 12:33Speaker 2: well was just as important as starting well. Jehu's heart
- 12:37Speaker 2: grew tired. He denied evil, but he did not cling
- 12:41Speaker 2: to what was good. As a result, he was cut
- 12:44Speaker 2: off from truly experiencing the glory of God on earth.
- 12:52Speaker 3: As we begin today's passage, Jehu still has business to
- 12:55Speaker 3: attend to. For starters, the most wicked of all, Jezebel,
- 12:59Speaker 3: was still alive. and her time for judgment had come.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Hearing that Jehu is in Jezreel, the queen painted her
- 13:08Speaker 3: eyes and dressed like a queen. She knew her time
- 13:11Speaker 3: had come, but she would be defiant and hold to
- 13:14Speaker 3: her high position to the very end. From her window
- 13:18Speaker 3: high above Jehu, she greeted him with scorn, calling him
- 13:22Speaker 3: a killer and a murderer of his master. Jehu did
- 13:25Speaker 3: not give thought to her words, but called up to
- 13:28Speaker 3: her window to the slaves, asking if anywhere on his side.
- 13:32Speaker 3: When two of the three eunuchs looked out the window
- 13:34Speaker 3: to him, he told them to throw her down. The
- 13:37Speaker 3: once fearsome queen who had killed hundreds of God's prophets
- 13:40Speaker 3: and led King Ahab and the nation of Israel into
- 13:43Speaker 3: utter darkness and idolatry was summarily executed as her slaves
- 13:48Speaker 3: tossed her from the window. Her body spilled its blood
- 13:51Speaker 3: on the ground below and was trampled by Jehu's horses.
- 13:55Speaker 3: He called for her body to be given a dignified
- 13:57Speaker 3: burial for she was nobility. But then he was reminded
- 14:01Speaker 3: of God's words concerning her, and as his servants went
- 14:04Speaker 3: to fetch the body, they found that just as God
- 14:07Speaker 3: had said, she had been carried off by dogs, her
- 14:11Speaker 3: flesh consumed so there was no body to bury. Jezebel
- 14:15Speaker 3: would not stand as a pagan martyr. She became fertilizer
- 14:18Speaker 3: for the very land she terrorized with her evil. But
- 14:22Speaker 3: Ahab's ungodly line still needed to be cut off. Jehu
- 14:26Speaker 3: had more work to do. First he sent word to
- 14:29Speaker 3: the elders of Samaria that he would face Ahab's sons
- 14:32Speaker 3: in battle. They were to choose one of his sons
- 14:35Speaker 3: as king and he would fight them. But the elders
- 14:37Speaker 3: knew Jehu was too powerful, so their allegiance was quick
- 14:41Speaker 3: to shift to the new king. They professed loyalty to
- 14:44Speaker 3: Jehu and asked what they could do. It would have
- 14:48Speaker 3: been tempting for Jehu to rest then knowing that the
- 14:51Speaker 3: line of the king Ahab was no longer in power.
- 14:54Speaker 3: But God had called him to wipe out the evil,
- 14:56Speaker 3: and letting Ahab's sons live would have been disobedient to God.
- 15:00Speaker 3: So he called for the heads of Ahab's sons and
- 15:03Speaker 3: displayed them at the city gates. It was a gruesome
- 15:06Speaker 3: reminder of the high price of sin and evil and judgment.
- 15:11Speaker 3: God's word would not return void, and Jehu continued to
- 15:14Speaker 3: wipe out Ahab's family and his friends and priests who
- 15:17Speaker 3: supported the king during his wicked reign. These passages, of course,
- 15:22Speaker 3: are very violent and perhaps difficult to understand for some.
- 15:27Speaker 3: So much killing, so much terror and horror, all coming
- 15:31Speaker 3: at the direction of God. But we must not forget
- 15:34Speaker 3: that our God is a holy God. He is a
- 15:37Speaker 3: righteous God and demands righteousness of his people. He will
- 15:42Speaker 3: fight fiercely to protect those that he loves. And God
- 15:45Speaker 3: loves Israel as he loves his church family today. He
- 15:49Speaker 3: loves us with a fierceness that is unmatched. Back in
- 15:52Speaker 3: the day with Israel, these men who had led the
- 15:55Speaker 3: nation astray were a threat to God's children, and they
- 15:58Speaker 3: had to be dealt with firmly and fairly. Jehu's cleansing
- 16:03Speaker 3: of Israel continued as he struck down more and more people.
- 16:06Speaker 3: But along the way, he encountered other righteous men, like Jehonadab.
- 16:11Speaker 3: The men shared a zeal for the Lord, and Jehonadab
- 16:14Speaker 3: rode with Jehu, an ally in the fight for the
- 16:17Speaker 3: very soul of Israel. The pathway of righteousness can often
- 16:21Speaker 3: be a lonely one, and we do well to find
- 16:25Speaker 3: those who share our passion to doing the will of God,
- 16:27Speaker 3: just as Jehu found this man. Finally, Jehu called together
- 16:32Speaker 3: the prophets of Baal. He made them believe he was
- 16:35Speaker 3: turning to their false god. But as they were all assembled,
- 16:38Speaker 3: he had every last prophet of Baal put to death.
- 16:41Speaker 3: The pagan temple was destroyed, and a public latrine was
- 16:45Speaker 3: placed there as a sign that idol worship was despicable
- 16:48Speaker 3: and vile and filthy. Jehu fought valiantly for the Lord
- 16:53Speaker 3: and accomplished great things for God. But sadly, with time,
- 16:57Speaker 3: he grew numb and complacent, failing to walk with the Lord.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Though he had done much for God, his legacy was
- 17:04Speaker 3: sullied by his failure to hold fast to God. It
- 17:07Speaker 3: is a striking reminder that we are to run hard
- 17:10Speaker 3: the race that is set before us all the way
- 17:12Speaker 3: to the end. We must commit, and never quit, and
- 17:16Speaker 3: not grow weary in doing good. We must always trust
- 17:19Speaker 3: in God and live in the righteousness that He provides
- 17:23Speaker 3: us in Christ by the power of His Spirit. Let's pray.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Dear God, we thank You for today's reading. As difficult
- 17:30Speaker 3: as it is to hear, we know that You are
- 17:33Speaker 3: God of righteousness and justice, that You do judge the wicked,
- 17:38Speaker 3: that You are angry, according to Your Word, with the
- 17:40Speaker 3: wicked every day. So we pray. that we will trust
- 17:44Speaker 3: you in your judgment of all things. May we be
- 17:47Speaker 3: productive all the days of our lives and faithful to
- 17:50Speaker 3: you in every season of life, that we would never
- 17:53Speaker 3: turn away from letting you have complete control of our lives.
- 17:58Speaker 3: We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you for
- 18:02Speaker 3: listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast. And before
- 18:05Speaker 3: we go, I wanted to let you know that the
