- 0:11Hello friends, it is Sean. Here it is Thursday.
- 0:14It is the 19th of October. Thanks for clicking play.
- 0:19Great to have you with me as you and I are going to read well the
- 0:25first of a few chapters that run on into each other and today,
- 0:30well today is the Super cliffhanger.
- 0:33Today ends in a very unsatisfactory spot and in fact
- 0:36this is quite the form of cruel and unusual treatment.
- 0:40When This is where we're going to have to put down the book of
- 0:42Acts for this week right on this cliffhanger when the the action
- 0:47is happening and Paul opens his mouth to speak and we are
- 0:52whisked away. Whisked away by the end of the
- 0:54chapter. So this is the the start of this
- 0:57fantastic series of events. Paul is 1 gutsy dude and this is
- 1:02beautifully captured by Luke as we see how he engages that part
- 1:07of the world with the truth of Jesus message, even when it is
- 1:11very, very unpopular. So let us enjoy this together.
- 1:16Let's read Friends Acts Chapter 21.
- 1:31After saying farewell to the Ephesian elders, we sailed
- 1:34straight to the island of Koz. The next day we reached Rhodes
- 1:39and then went to Patara. There we boarded a ship sailing
- 1:43for Phoenicia. We sighted the island of Cyprus,
- 1:48passed it on our left and landed at the harbour of Tyre in Syria,
- 1:52where the ship was to unload its cargo.
- 1:55We went to shore, found the local believers, and stayed with
- 1:59them. A week.
- 2:00These believers prophesied through the Holy Spirit that
- 2:03Paul should not go on to Jerusalem.
- 2:06When we returned to the ship at the end of the week, the entire
- 2:09congregation, including women and children, left the city and
- 2:13came down to the shore with us. There we knelt, prayed and set
- 2:17our farewells. Then we went aboard and they
- 2:20returned home. The next stop after leaving Tyre
- 2:24was Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and
- 2:28stayed for one day. The next day we went on to say
- 2:31Surya and stayed at the home of Philip the Evangelist, one of
- 2:35the seven men who had been chosen to distribute food.
- 2:38He had four unmarried daughters who had the gift of prophecy.
- 2:43Several days later, a man named Agabus, who also had the gift of
- 2:47prophecy, arrived from Judea. He came over, took Paul's belt,
- 2:52and bound his own feet and hands with it.
- 2:55Then he said, the Holy Spirit declares so.
- 2:59Shall the owner of this belt be bound by the Jewish leaders in
- 3:03Jerusalem and turned over to the Gentiles.
- 3:06When we heard this, we and the local believers all begged Paul
- 3:10not to go on to Jerusalem. But he said, why all this
- 3:14weeping? You're breaking my heart.
- 3:17I'm ready not only to be jailed at Jerusalem, but even to die
- 3:20for the sake of the Lord Jesus. When it was clear that we
- 3:24couldn't persuade him, we gave up and said the Lords will be
- 3:29done. After this we packed our things
- 3:32and left for Jerusalem. Some believers from Caesarea
- 3:36accompanied us and they took us to the home of Nathan, a man
- 3:40originally from Cyprus and one of the early believers.
- 3:44When we arrived, the brothers and sisters in Jerusalem
- 3:46welcomed us warmly. The next day Paul went with us
- 3:51to meet with James and all the elders of the Jerusalem church
- 3:55were present. After greeting them, Paul gave a
- 3:58detailed account of the things God had accomplished among the
- 4:01Gentiles through his ministry. After hearing this, they praised
- 4:06God. And then they said, you know,
- 4:09dear brother, how many thousands of Jews have also believed?
- 4:13And they all follow the law of Moses very seriously.
- 4:17But the Jewish believers here in Jerusalem have been told that
- 4:21you are teaching all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to
- 4:24turn their backs on the Law of Moses.
- 4:27They've heard that you teach them not to circumcise their
- 4:30children or follow other Jewish customs.
- 4:33What should we do? They will certainly hear that
- 4:36you have come. Here's what we want you to do.
- 4:40We have four men here who have completed their vow.
- 4:43Go with them to the Temple and join them in the purification
- 4:47ceremony, paying for them to have their heads ritually
- 4:50shaved. Then everyone will know that the
- 4:53rumours are all false and that you yourself observe the Jewish
- 4:57laws. As for the Gentile believers,
- 5:00they should do what we already told them in a letter.
- 5:03They should abstain from eating food offered to idols, from
- 5:07consuming blood or the meat of strangled animals, and from
- 5:11sexual immorality. So Paul went to the temple the
- 5:14next day with the other men. They had already started the
- 5:18purification ritual, so he publicly announced the date when
- 5:22their vows would end and sacrifices would be offered for
- 5:25each of them. The seven days were almost ended
- 5:28when some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul at the temple
- 5:32and roused a mob against him. They grabbed him, yelling.
- 5:36Men of Israel, help us. This is the man who preaches
- 5:40against our people everywhere and tells everybody to disobey
- 5:44the Jewish laws. He speaks against the temple and
- 5:48even defiles this holy place by bringing in Gentiles.
- 5:53Earlier that day they had seen him in the city with Trophimus,
- 5:57A Gentile from Ephesus, and they assumed Paul had taken him into
- 6:00the temple. The whole city was rocked by
- 6:03these accusations and a great riot followed.
- 6:07Paul was grabbed and dragged out of the temple and immediately
- 6:11the gates were closed behind him.
- 6:14As they were trying to kill him, word reached the commander of
- 6:17the Roman regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.
- 6:21He immediately called out his soldiers and officers and ran
- 6:25down among the crowd. When the mob saw the commander
- 6:28and the troops coming, they stopped beating Paul.
- 6:32Then the commander arrested him and ordered him bound with two
- 6:36chains. He asked the crowd who he was
- 6:39and what he had done. Some shouted one thing and some
- 6:43another. Since he couldn't find out the
- 6:45truth in all the uproar and confusion, he ordered that Paul
- 6:49be taken to the fortress. As Paul reached the stairs, the
- 6:53mob grew so violent the soldiers had to lift him to their
- 6:57shoulders to protect him, and the crowd followed behind,
- 7:01shouting Kill him, kill him. As Paul was about to be taken
- 7:06inside, he said to the commander.
- 7:09May I have a word with you? Do you know Greek?
- 7:12The Commander asked. Surprised.
- 7:15Aren't you the Egyptian who led a rebellion some time ago and
- 7:18took 4000 members of the Assassins out into the desert?
- 7:22No, Paul replied. I am a Jew and a citizen of
- 7:27Tarsus in Sicilia, which is an important city.
- 7:31Please let me speak to these people, the commander agreed.
- 7:36So Paul stood on the stairs and motioned to the people to be
- 7:40quiet. Soon a deep silence enveloped
- 7:43the crowd, and he addressed them in their own language.
- 7:47Aramaic, our Lord, the hutzpah of this
- 8:00man, to be so bold as to speak your message in the midst of
- 8:06this crazy persecution of Him, thank you that your message is 1
- 8:14so worth sharing. I pray that you would grow our
- 8:19faith that this message of your love and your transformative
- 8:25grace in our lives would seep deeply into our hearts and
- 8:31change us from the inside out. And that your message and your
- 8:37way would transform not just ourselves, but our societies.
- 8:42That our world would be a place where your kingdom's priorities
- 8:48would be given the light of day, where your message of mercy and
- 8:54inclusion and grace could be a dominant voice, even if just for
- 9:00a moment. Lord Jesus, may your will be
- 9:04done here as it is in heaven. We just lift up each other in
- 9:11our Christian walk and the societies in which we live.
- 9:15That you would have your way, Jesus, that you would come in
- 9:19power, and that your presence would make known your love for
- 9:25all people. We pray All this in your mighty
- 9:29name, Jesus. Amen.
