- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 64, can you believe it? Lucas: I know, time flies. Today we're going somewhere a lot of us visit — the dentist. Luna: Oh, the dentist. I actually have a checkup next week. Perfect timing. Lucas: Then you'll love today's phrases. Let's start with a common one: 'Ik heb kiespijn.' That means 'I have a toothache.' Say it with me: Ik heb kiespijn. Luna: Ik heb kiespijn. Lucas: Good. 'Kiespijn' is toothache. 'Ik heb' you already know — 'I have.' So literally 'I have tooth pain.' Try again. Luna: Ik heb kiespijn. Lucas: Perfect. Now, the dentist might ask you: 'Doet dit pijn?' That means 'Does this hurt?' Let's hear it: Doet dit pijn? Luna: Doet dit pijn? Lucas: Exactly. 'Doet' is 'does,' 'dit' is 'this,' 'pijn' is 'pain.' So 'Does this pain?' — it's a direct translation. Say it once more. Luna: Doet dit pijn? Lucas: Great. And if the dentist wants you to open your mouth, they'll say: 'Doe uw mond open.' That's 'Open your mouth.' 'Doe' is the imperative of 'doen' — to do. 'Uw' is your, 'mond' is mouth, 'open' is open. Listen: Doe uw mond open. Luna: Doe uw mond open. That's a mouthful — no pun intended. Lucas: Nice one. Say it again. Luna: Doe uw mond open. Lucas: Good. Now, a basic sentence to tell someone where you're going: 'Ik ga naar de tandarts.' That means 'I'm going to the dentist.' 'Ik ga' is 'I go,' 'naar' is 'to,' 'de tandarts' is 'the dentist.' Repeat: Ik ga naar de tandarts. Luna: Ik ga naar de tandarts. Lucas: And finally: 'De tandarts kijkt naar mijn tanden.' That means 'The dentist looks at my teeth.' 'Kijkt' is 'looks,' 'naar' is 'at,' 'mijn' is 'my,' 'tanden' is 'teeth.' Let's hear it: De tandarts kijkt naar mijn tanden. Luna: De tandarts kijkt naar mijn tanden. That's a long one. Lucas: Break it down: De tandarts — kijkt — naar — mijn tanden. Try slowly. Luna: De tandarts kijkt naar mijn tanden. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's put them all together in a mini scene. Imagine you're at the dentist. You say: Ik heb kiespijn. Luna: Ik heb kiespijn. Lucas: The dentist asks: Doet dit pijn? Luna: Doet dit pijn? And you say... well, maybe yes or no. But then they say: Doe uw mond open. Lucas: Exactly. And after, you can say: De tandarts kijkt naar mijn tanden. So good. Luna: I love that we can actually use these. Lucas: Before we go further, I want to say something. If you're finding these episodes useful, and you want to keep the show ad-free, there's a simple way to help. Luna: Yeah, a handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo — that's literally what funds these conversations. Lucas: It's a small thing that makes a big difference. Okay, back to the dentist. Let's practice the question: Doet dit pijn? Imagine the dentist is checking a tooth. You can answer: Ja, het doet pijn or Nee, het doet geen pijn. Luna: Ja, het doet pijn. Nee, het doet geen pijn. So 'geen' is 'no' or 'not any'? Lucas: Exactly. 'Geen pijn' means 'no pain.' Good observation. Now let's do a quick roleplay. I'll be the dentist. You're the patient. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Doet dit pijn? Luna: Ja, het doet pijn. Lucas: Ah. Doe uw mond open. Luna: Doe uw mond open. Lucas: De tandarts kijkt naar uw tanden. Luna: De tandarts kijkt naar mijn tanden. Lucas: Very good. Now you try being the dentist. Ask me: Doet dit pijn? Luna: Doet dit pijn? Lucas: Nee, het doet geen pijn. Luna: Great. Then I say: Doe uw mond open. Lucas: Doe uw mond open. Luna: De tandarts kijkt naar uw tanden. Lucas: You've got it. Now let's go over all five phrases one more time. First: Ik heb kiespijn. Luna: Ik heb kiespijn. Lucas: Doet dit pijn? Luna: Doet dit pijn? Lucas: Doe uw mond open. Luna: Doe uw mond open. Lucas: Ik ga naar de tandarts. Luna: Ik ga naar de tandarts. Lucas: De tandarts kijkt naar mijn tanden. Luna: De tandarts kijkt naar mijn tanden. Lucas: Fantastic.
