- Lucas: Hello again, and welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm your host Lucas, and with me is the ever-curious Luna. Luna: Hi Lucas, hi everyone. I'm so ready to learn something new today. Last time we talked about rain and sun, hujan and panas. That was fun. Lucas: It was, and I love how you've been practicing. You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make real progress with Malay, and you want to keep our episodes free and ad-free for everyone, you could support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Every little bit helps us keep making these lessons. Luna: Yeah, it's like a small way to say thanks if you've been enjoying the show. I know I appreciate all the listeners who do that. Lucas: Exactly. And speaking of moving forward, today we're going to learn a question word that's super useful for getting around and just chatting. It's 'bagaimana', which means 'how'. Luna: Bagaimana. How. Okay, I like that. So how do I say 'How are you'? Lucas: Great question. You say 'Bagaimana keadaan kamu?' which literally means 'how is your condition?' but it's a friendly way to ask 'how are you?'. Luna: Bagaimana keadaan kamu. That's a bit of a mouthful. Let me try. Bagaimana keadaan kamu. Lucas: Perfect, you got it. And a shorter, more casual version is just 'Apa khabar?' which you might know from earlier episodes. But today, we focus on 'Bagaimana'. Luna: So it's like the all-purpose 'how' for asking about things and situations. Like, how do I get to the market? Lucas: Exactly. You can say 'Bagaimana saya pergi ke pasar?' – 'How do I go to the market?' Luna: Bagaimana saya pergi ke pasar. That's useful. I'll remember that when I'm lost in Kuala Lumpur. Lucas: And if you don't know how to do something, you can say 'Saya tak tahu bagaimana' – 'I don't know how.' Luna: Saya tak tahu bagaimana. That's a good excuse for me, because I don't know how to cook delicious Malay food yet. Lucas: Well, you're learning the language, so you're on the right track. And if someone explains something to you, they might say 'Begini' – meaning 'like this'. Luna: Begini. So if you're showing me how to stir the curry, you'd say 'Begini'. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's put all these together in a quick dialogue. Imagine you meet your friend Aisyah. You ask, 'Bagaimana keadaan kamu?' Luna: And she says, 'Saya baik, terima kasih. Bagaimana dengan kamu?' – I'm good, thanks. And you? Lucas: Nice. And then you might ask, 'Bagaimana saya pergi ke pasar?' because you need to buy some vegetables. Luna: And she says, 'Oh, pergi lurus, kemudian belok kiri.' – go straight, then turn left. Lucas: Perfect. You see, 'bagaimana' can be used in so many situations. Let's repeat the key phrase one more time: 'Bagaimana keadaan kamu?' Luna: Bagaimana keadaan kamu. And 'Bagaimana saya pergi ke pasar?' Lucas: Great. And don't forget 'Saya tak tahu bagaimana' and 'Begini'. Luna: Saya tak tahu bagaimana, begitulah. Wait, is that right? Begini, not begitu. Lucas: You're right, Luna. 'Begini' means 'like this', and 'begitu' means 'like that'. Let's stick with 'Begini' for now. Luna: Okay, so if I'm showing you my new phone, I'd say 'Begini' as I hold it up. Lucas: Exactly. And if you're pointing to something far away, you'd say 'Begitu'. But that's for another day. For now, let's practice what we've learned. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. So, Bagaimana keadaan kamu? Lucas: Saya baik, terima kasih. Dan kamu? Luna: Saya baik juga. And then I'd ask, 'Bagaimana saya pergi ke stesen?' – because I need to catch a train. Lucas: That's right. 'Bagaimana saya pergi ke stesen?' And your friend might answer, 'Naik bas' – take the bus. Luna: Naik bas. Simple. So 'bagaimana' is really the key to unlocking directions and many other things. Lucas: Absolutely. It's one of those words that'll make you sound more natural and confident. Let's do one final listen. Repeat after me: Bagaimana. Luna: Bagaimana. Lucas: Bagaimana keadaan kamu? Luna: Bagaimana keadaan kamu? Lucas: Bagaimana saya pergi ke pasar? Luna: Bagaimana saya pergi ke pasar? Lucas: Saya tak tahu bagaimana. Luna: Saya tak tahu bagaimana. Lucas: Begini. Luna: Begini. Lucas: Excellent. You're doing so well, Luna. And that's our lesson for today. We've learned 'bagaimana' – how, and a few phrases to use it. Practice these until we meet again. Terima kasih for listening, and see you next time.
