- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter thirty one of Synods and Councils. One, for the
- 0:07Speaker 1: better government and further edification of the Church, there ought
- 0:11Speaker 1: to be such assemblies as are commonly called synods or councils. Two,
- 0:18Speaker 1: as magistrates may lawfully call a senate of ministers and
- 0:22Speaker 1: other fit persons to consult and advise with about matters
- 0:26Speaker 1: of religion. So if magistrates be open enemies to the Church,
- 0:31Speaker 1: the ministers of Christ of themselves by virtue of their office,
- 0:35Speaker 1: or they with other fit persons upon delegation from their churches,
- 0:40Speaker 1: may meet together in such assemblies. Three. It belongs to
- 0:46Speaker 1: synods and councils ministerially to determine controversies of faith and
- 0:53Speaker 1: cases of conscience, to set down rules and directions for
- 0:58Speaker 1: the better ordering of the public worship of God and
- 1:01Speaker 1: government of His Church, to receive complaints in cases of maladministration,
- 1:07Speaker 1: and authoritatively to determine the same. Which decrees and determinations,
- 1:14Speaker 1: if consonant to the Word of God, are to be
- 1:17Speaker 1: received with reverence and submission, not only for their agreement
- 1:21Speaker 1: with the Word, but also for the power whereby they
- 1:25Speaker 1: are made as being an ordinance of God appointed thereunto
- 1:29Speaker 1: in His Word four. All synods or councils since the Apostles, times,
- 1:36Speaker 1: whether general or particular, may err, and many have aired. Therefore,
- 1:42Speaker 1: they are not to be made the rule of faith
- 1:45Speaker 1: or practice, but to be used as a help in both. Four.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Synods and counsels are to handle or conclude nothing but
- 1:56Speaker 1: that which is ecclesiastical, and are not to inter my
- 2:00Speaker 1: mettle with civil affairs which concern the commonwealth, and less
- 2:04Speaker 1: by way of humble petition in cases extraordinary, or by
- 2:08Speaker 1: way of advice for satisfaction of conscience, if they be
- 2:12Speaker 1: thereunto required by the civil magistrate. Chapter thirty two of
- 2:20Speaker 1: the State of Men after Death and of the Resurrection
- 2:24Speaker 1: of the Dead one The bodies of men after death
- 2:29Speaker 1: return to dust and see corruption, but their souls, which
- 2:34Speaker 1: neither die nor sleep, having an immortal subsistence, immediately returned
- 2:40Speaker 1: to God who gave them. The souls of the righteous,
- 2:43Speaker 1: being then made perfect in holiness, are received into the
- 2:47Speaker 1: highest heavens, where they behold the face of God in
- 2:50Speaker 1: light and glory, waiting for the full redemption of their bodies.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And the souls of the wicked are cast into hell,
- 2:58Speaker 1: where they remain in torments and utter darkness. Reserved to
- 3:03Speaker 1: the judgment of the Great Day. Beside these two places
- 3:08Speaker 1: for souls separated from their bodies, the scripture acknowledges none.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Two At the last Day, such as are found alive
- 3:19Speaker 1: shall not die, but be changed, And all the dead
- 3:23Speaker 1: shall be raised up with the self same bodies, and
- 3:27Speaker 1: none other, although with different qualities, which shall be united
- 3:31Speaker 1: again to their souls forever. Three the bodies of the
- 3:36Speaker 1: unjust shall, by the power of Christ, be raised to
- 3:40Speaker 1: dishonor the bodies of the just by His spirit unto honor,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and be made conformable to his own glorious body. Chapter
- 3:51Speaker 1: thirty three of the Last Judgment. One. God has appointed
- 3:59Speaker 1: a day wherein He will judge the world in righteousness,
- 4:03Speaker 1: by Jesus Christ, to whom all power and judgment is
- 4:08Speaker 1: given of the Father. In which day not only the
- 4:12Speaker 1: apostate angels shall be judged, but likewise all persons that
- 4:17Speaker 1: have lived upon earth shall appear before the tribunal of Christ,
- 4:21Speaker 1: to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and to receive according to what they have done in
- 4:28Speaker 1: the body, whether good or evil. Two. The end of
- 4:33Speaker 1: God's appointing this day is for the manifestation of the
- 4:38Speaker 1: glory of His mercy in the eternal salvation of the elect,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and of his justice in the damnation of the reprobate,
- 4:45Speaker 1: who are wicked and disobedient. For then shall the righteous
- 4:50Speaker 1: go into everlasting life and receive that fullness of joy
- 4:54Speaker 1: and refreshing which shall come from the presence of the Lord.
- 4:59Speaker 1: But the wicked, who know not God and obey not
- 5:02Speaker 1: the Gospel of Jesus Christ, shall be cast into eternal
- 5:06Speaker 1: torments and be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence
- 5:11Speaker 1: of the Lord and from the glory of his power. Three,
- 5:16Speaker 1: as Christ would have us to be certainly persuaded that
- 5:20Speaker 1: there shall be a day of judgment, both to deter
- 5:23Speaker 1: all men from sin and for the greater consolation of
- 5:27Speaker 1: the godly in their adversity, So will He have that
- 5:31Speaker 1: day unknown to men, that they may shake off all
- 5:35Speaker 1: carnal security and be always watchful, because they know not
- 5:40Speaker 1: at what hour the Lord will come, and may be
- 5:44Speaker 1: ever prepared to say, come, Lord Jesus, come quickly a man.
- 5:51Speaker 1: End of Chapter thirty three, end of the Westminster Confession
