- 0:26Speaker 1: Saints have their head coach. It's Kellen Moore. By now,
- 0:29Speaker 1: you probably know that Saints made it official on Tuesday
- 0:33Speaker 1: via press release, and I think my thoughts on Kellen
- 0:38Speaker 1: Moore are similar to what a lot of you probably
- 0:41Speaker 1: think about Kellen Moore. There's a lot of excitement there.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Guy was just the offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl champion,
- 0:47Speaker 1: a top ten offense in every category except passing, eighth
- 0:51Speaker 1: in total, seventh in scoring, second in rushing, and then
- 0:55Speaker 1: twenty ninth in passing. It's just how they were able
- 0:58Speaker 1: to win. But it's a little exciting because of the
- 1:00Speaker 1: many different ways we've seen Kellen Moore's offenses go. In Dallas,
- 1:04Speaker 1: they were very pass heavy with Dak Prescott and those
- 1:07Speaker 1: receivers obviously had Justin Herbert an La year ago with
- 1:10Speaker 1: the Chargers and then this year really riding Saquon Barkley
- 1:13Speaker 1: in a run heavy offense. So the ability to be multiple,
- 1:18Speaker 1: But being a good play caller, a successful play caller
- 1:24Speaker 1: isn't the only thing you need to be a good
- 1:26Speaker 1: head coach. Mike McDaniel in Miami is a good play
- 1:30Speaker 1: caller when they've been healthy, and two has been healthy
- 1:32Speaker 1: and they've had Tyreek and that thing going, they've been
- 1:34Speaker 1: a fun, exciting offense. It's not been a great head coach.
- 1:39Speaker 1: A big part of that is also culture and staff.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I think Kellen Moore is going to be fine when
- 1:46Speaker 1: it comes to culture. And I'm looking at a guy
- 1:50Speaker 1: that as a quarterback was fifty and three. He became
- 1:55Speaker 1: the first and I get it. It's Boise State, it's
- 1:58Speaker 1: a G five in the Mountain West. I get it.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Dude still won fifty games. I don't care if it's
- 2:07Speaker 1: G five, Pop Worn or D three Juco, don't matter.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Fifty and three. You're a winner. Dude is a winner.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I like that a lot, So I'm not so worried
- 2:18Speaker 1: about Kellen Moore's ability to create culture. I do a
- 2:24Speaker 1: little bit wonder about his age at thirty six. Right,
- 2:29Speaker 1: we know the story he played against Derek Carr when
- 2:32Speaker 1: Kellen Moore was at Boise and cars at Fresno. Everybody
- 2:34Speaker 1: knows that story by now. But you got a dude
- 2:37Speaker 1: at linebacker in to Mario Davis who's as old as
- 2:41Speaker 1: the head coach. I mean, these dudes like to Mario
- 2:46Speaker 1: and Cam Jordan, these are your team leaders. But are
- 2:48Speaker 1: they gonna fall in line? I would assume they will
- 2:51Speaker 1: let me. They got the C on their jersey, but
- 2:53Speaker 1: it is something worth asking, right, But I think I
- 2:57Speaker 1: don't know, none of us still none of us knows.
- 3:01Speaker 1: But I think they'll be fine as far as culture.
- 3:05Speaker 1: The other big question is Kenny hire a staff? Can
- 3:08Speaker 1: he identify good coaches and put them in positions so
- 3:12Speaker 1: that this team can succeed Because one of the things
- 3:15Speaker 1: that I love about having a guy that controls one
- 3:17Speaker 1: side of the ball is you never have to worry
- 3:19Speaker 1: about that side of the ball if he's doing his
- 3:20Speaker 1: job right, it's always the concern. Like the answer the
- 3:24Speaker 1: question in Detroit this year, you hire Dan Campbell. Campbell's
- 3:28Speaker 1: not a coordinator. He's a culture guy. And he hired
- 3:31Speaker 1: two really good assistants in Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn
- 3:33Speaker 1: knocked it out of the park. Okay, in one year.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Both of those guys are gone. Now what it's a
- 3:40Speaker 1: giant question. It's again New Orleans when Sean Payton was here.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Didn't matter if you're oc left as long as you
- 3:49Speaker 1: had Peyton yet the guy who had had the keys
- 3:52Speaker 1: to the car offensively, but he had to hit defensively.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And he did it with Dennis Allen, and he did
- 3:58Speaker 1: it with Greg Williams, and not so much with Steve
- 4:01Speaker 1: Spagnolo and Rob Ryant. Right, and even though you had
- 4:05Speaker 1: Peyton breeze when you missed on the DC, you had
- 4:09Speaker 1: good offenses, but boarded your defensive struggling. You were sub
- 4:11Speaker 1: five hundred. So can Kellen Moore hire good assistance That's
- 4:16Speaker 1: going to be a gigantic question. And Ian Rappaport was
- 4:19Speaker 1: on the Insiders on the NFL network, gave a couple
- 4:22Speaker 1: of names to watch early on in this process for
- 4:25Speaker 1: assistants that could be joining Kellen Moore in New Orleans.
- 4:28Speaker 2: As far as his staff goes, Doug nus Myers's quarterbacks
- 4:31Speaker 2: coach in Philadelphia, I know would be considered a strong
- 4:34Speaker 2: candidate to have a big role on the offensive staff,
- 4:37Speaker 2: perhaps offensive coordinator for the new one, and Saints they
- 4:40Speaker 2: got to go through the process there. The defensive coordinator
- 4:43Speaker 2: should be a little more open. But I do know
- 4:45Speaker 2: that Brandon Staley, former Chargers head coach, who came up
- 4:48Speaker 2: as a really strong, kind of a hot shot defensive
- 4:51Speaker 2: coordinator candidate, is going to get a long look there.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And you know, I know people will say, like, oh,
- 4:56Speaker 2: do they have times? Can they hire a good staff? Everyone,
- 4:59Speaker 2: like the people who are on his staff probably have
- 5:01Speaker 2: some idea that they'll be there. They're waiting, say, Saints
- 5:04Speaker 2: are going to be fine with Kellen Moore as their head.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Coach, and the Saints are going to give Kellen Moore
- 5:10Speaker 1: time and money to build a staff like he needs to.
- 5:13Speaker 1: So if you have someone that wants to elevate, there's
- 5:17Speaker 1: a great opportunity there. Now. Staley's interesting because this year
- 5:22Speaker 1: he was the assistant head coach with the forty nine
- 5:25Speaker 1: Ers after he got fired by LA with Chargers, so
- 5:29Speaker 1: assistant head coach but not a coordinator on either side
- 5:31Speaker 1: of the ball. The forty nine Ers just hired Robert
- 5:33Speaker 1: Salivak as their defensive coordinator, So yeah, it would make
- 5:36Speaker 1: sense that Staley might want to go be a coordinator again.
- 5:39Speaker 1: So does he join Kellen Moore? Oddly, it would just
- 5:41Speaker 1: be a role reversal. It was Staley in LA as
- 5:43Speaker 1: the head coach who hired Moore as his OC. In
- 5:47Speaker 1: this instance, it would be more as the head coach
- 5:49Speaker 1: hiring Staley as his DC. But Staley has a long
- 5:54Speaker 1: He's still a relatively young guy at forty two years
- 5:58Speaker 1: old me relatively young. It's a relatively young guy relative
- 6:03Speaker 1: to Kellen Moore. He's older. Kellen Moore is thirty six.
- 6:06Speaker 1: But this guy who coached in college and then made
- 6:09Speaker 1: his way into the NFL in twenty seventeen, outside linebackers
- 6:13Speaker 1: with the Bears for two years, outside linebackers with the
- 6:16Speaker 1: Broncos for a year, DC with the Rams in twenty twenty,
- 6:22Speaker 1: after one year's DC with the Rams, became the head
- 6:25Speaker 1: coach of the Chargers and he was the Chargers head
- 6:27Speaker 1: coach for three years and had some early success. They
- 6:30Speaker 1: just had some endgame gaffes where they just choked away
- 6:35Speaker 1: one score games nine and eight his first year, ten
- 6:38Speaker 1: and seven his second year, then five and nine and
- 6:40Speaker 1: he was fired in LA. But I like the idea
- 6:47Speaker 1: of getting a coach that has head coaching experience on
- 6:50Speaker 1: staff that might be able to help with some of
- 6:53Speaker 1: those things that come along with being a head coach
- 6:57Speaker 1: that Kellen Moore hasn't experienced. So yes, I go in
- 7:00Speaker 1: getting a more experienced veteran coach, even at forty two
- 7:04Speaker 1: years old. But Staley's been a head coach in the NFL,
- 7:07Speaker 1: which helps to have that experience on staff. Doug Nussmeyer
- 7:13Speaker 1: is the other guy that he mentioned there that Rapapot
- 7:16Speaker 1: mentioned nus Meyer. This is one that listen for a
- 7:21Speaker 1: very obvious local tie that makes a lot of sense.
- 7:23Speaker 1: His son Garrett is the coach at as the quarterback
- 7:26Speaker 1: excuse me at LSU. Bringing Doug closer to Garrett would
- 7:30Speaker 1: make a lot of sense. Doug has ties to the
- 7:32Speaker 1: organization as we know. He came into the NFL when
- 7:35Speaker 1: he was drafted by the Saints back in nineteen ninety four.
- 7:38Speaker 1: He was with the Saints from ninety four to ninety seven.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Became a coach in two thousand and one in the
- 7:44Speaker 1: CFL with the BC Lions. He was with Ottawa and
- 7:47Speaker 1: he has made his way through the ranks, both college
- 7:49Speaker 1: and pro, from Michigan State to the Rams, to Fresno State,
- 7:54Speaker 1: to Washington, to Alabama, to Michigan to Florida, then to
- 7:57Speaker 1: the Dallas Cowboys now than to the Chargers for a year,
- 8:02Speaker 1: Chargers for a year with Kellen Moore, and then to
- 8:09Speaker 1: the Eagle so Kellen Moore. And by the ways that
- 8:11Speaker 1: Dallas earlier, so dougnus Meyern Kellen Moore overlapped when Kellen
- 8:16Speaker 1: Moore was the OC in Dallas, Doug nus Meyer was
- 8:22Speaker 1: the quarterbacks coach, so they overlapped in Dallas. They overlapped
- 8:26Speaker 1: with the Chargers in twenty twenty three, and then this
- 8:28Speaker 1: year in Philly. So every year since twenty eighteen, Doug
- 8:33Speaker 1: nus Meyern and Kellen Moore have been on the same staff.
- 8:36Speaker 1: You have some great synergy there with those two guys.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And obviously Doug nus Meyer played quarterback in the NFL.
- 8:41Speaker 1: As a respected coach at every level he's been, I
- 8:44Speaker 1: would love that higher if it's Doug nus Meyer. The
- 8:46Speaker 1: other name that we've heard so far is one more
- 8:52Speaker 1: Eagles assistant whose name is Kevin Petullo. So we had
- 8:59Speaker 1: this up early today at Louisiana Sports Dot ed if
- 9:01Speaker 1: you want to go read about it, but Jeremy Fowler
- 9:03Speaker 1: from ESPN was the first to report it said, Kevin
- 9:06Speaker 1: Petullo is a name to file away a. Patullo was
- 9:11Speaker 1: the associated head coach and pass game coordinator with the
- 9:13Speaker 1: Eagles this year and could very well be a name
- 9:17Speaker 1: that Kellen Moore is interested in bringing in New Orleans,
- 9:19Speaker 1: but also could be the guy that Nick Siriani promotes
- 9:24Speaker 1: internally to be the OC in Philly with Kellen Moore
- 9:28Speaker 1: leaving for New Orleans. Another guy who's a young guy's
- 9:32Speaker 1: forty three, so he's a year older than Brandon Staley.
- 9:35Speaker 1: But he's been in the NFL since two thousand and seven.
- 9:37Speaker 1: One year was an exception in twenty seventeen, he coached
- 9:40Speaker 1: one year as a defensive analyst with Texas A and
- 9:42Speaker 1: M But every other year since O seven, he's been
- 9:44Speaker 1: in the NFL. Three seasons with the Colts, the last
- 9:49Speaker 1: four with the Eagles. He'd also been with the Chiefs, Bills, Titans,
- 9:51Speaker 1: and Jets, so he's been around the league. That's another
- 9:55Speaker 1: NFL seasoned coach that's still a relatively young guy who
- 9:59Speaker 1: could join Kellen moore staff. So some of the names
- 10:04Speaker 1: worth keeping an eye on as Kellen Moore now starts
- 10:06Speaker 1: to build his staff, and you know, I think that's
- 10:14Speaker 1: going to be the big question for Kellen Moore is
- 10:19Speaker 1: build your staff, build the culture, and even more important
- 10:23Speaker 1: than that, start to get this roster back in shape
- 10:27Speaker 1: where you can compete. The big question is how much
- 10:30Speaker 1: of that is going to be Kellen Moore, how much
- 10:32Speaker 1: of that is going to be Mickey Loomis, how much
- 10:34Speaker 1: of that is going to be the two in tandem.
- 10:35Speaker 1: When Sean Payton was the coach, he was intimately involved
- 10:39Speaker 1: in all those decisions about personnel. You get the sense
- 10:42Speaker 1: that maybe that wasn't the case with Dennis Allen. What's
- 10:45Speaker 1: it going to be like with Kelvin Moore. We'll start
- 10:47Speaker 1: to find out in short order.
