- 0:08with less confusion and more ease.
- 0:10Make your dream a reality of getting into flight.
- 0:12Listen in as you hear some of the stories of the people
- 0:14getting there and come join the flight prep group.
- 0:16Hey guys, welcome to episode 115 of How to Become a Flight Nurse
- 0:19podcast. I had to even look up what
- 0:23episode number it was. I can't believe we have over 100
- 0:26episodes. So for those of you guys
- 0:27listening and following, I really appreciate you being with
- 0:31me each week and I hope that this message really hits home
- 0:35for you today. I've been thinking about this,
- 0:39about what I wanted to talk to you guys about this weekend.
- 0:41It's actually been something that I have struggled with over
- 0:43the years of just in general, over the years of being a
- 0:47student and over the years of being a nurse.
- 0:51And so today I really felt inclined to talk to you guys
- 0:54about the perfect student mindset.
- 0:57And the reason why I want to talk about this is because I
- 1:00think that this gets in my way a lot.
- 1:04And if you're anything like me, which a lot of you guys are,
- 1:08think you, you want to control things, you want things to be
- 1:10done perfectly. And this is what I call the
- 1:14perfect student mindset where you just get in your thoughts
- 1:19of, hey, I, I have to read the whole syllabus.
- 1:22I have to read all of the books, I have to take all of the notes.
- 1:26I have to know everything perfectly before I sit down for
- 1:29the test. And sometimes this is good and
- 1:32sometimes this can work against you.
- 1:34So I am really going to talk to you about this perfect student
- 1:37mindset in, in the realm of trying to get to flight.
- 1:40Because I really think this stops a lot of you guys from
- 1:44getting to this goal. And this really prevents a lot
- 1:46of you guys from being successful as a flight nurse and
- 1:49getting into flight nursing. So I'm going to put a little bit
- 1:51of a different twist on on this today and talk to you as it
- 1:55pertains to being a critical care nurse and specifically
- 1:58getting into flight. So often times when we're going
- 2:01to school, we think we need to do things perfectly.
- 2:04I don't know if any of you guys can relate to this, but I really
- 2:07truly enjoyed going to school. I have two degrees.
- 2:10I have 1° in communications with the emphasis and broadcast
- 2:15journalism. And I ended up going into that
- 2:18and banking for a little while and decided to switch careers.
- 2:21So nursing is actually my second career.
- 2:23And for a lot of you guys, that's the same.
- 2:26And so I really was excited to go back to school.
- 2:31I was excited to get a degree in nursing.
- 2:34I first got my ADN and then I went back and got my bachelor's
- 2:37after I got into flight because I felt like I had so much time
- 2:40back after working 24 hour shifts and only working 7 to 8 a
- 2:44month. So that's when I went back and
- 2:45got my BSN again. You don't need your BSN to be in
- 2:48flight. But I, I love the enjoy
- 2:52enjoyment of like learning new things and taking classes and
- 2:57getting degrees. And so I love being a student,
- 3:01but I definitely, I have gotten caught in, I have to do things
- 3:06perfectly. And sometimes I've given myself
- 3:09anxiety, overwhelm and complicated A lot of things.
- 3:12And I see a lot of you guys do this as you're trying to get to
- 3:15flight. You almost decide to not even go
- 3:17for it because you want to do it perfectly.
- 3:20And the way that I see this is that you say I have to have the
- 3:24perfect amount of time, I have to have the perfect amount of
- 3:28confidence before I get started. And my circumstances, my life
- 3:31circumstances have to align up perfectly.
- 3:34And I want to offer you guys to get to this goal, it's going to
- 3:39really require you to drop the perfection of that all because
- 3:44life isn't perfect, right? And as I've really picked up on
- 3:48the coaching tools and really implemented coaching in my life,
- 3:51I've realized actually the less that I try to control my
- 3:56situations, other people, circumstances, the more happy I
- 4:01am, the more at peace I am, and the more things will go my way.
- 4:07And my relationships have grown because of it too.
- 4:09So what I learned in critical care and flight is that you have
- 4:15to heavily go with the flow. You have to embrace the chaos,
- 4:19and you have to always rely on your gut and your feelings.
- 4:23And I'm going to talk to you a little bit about more of like
- 4:25what that looks like specifically as you're trying to
- 4:28get into flight and afterwards. And hopefully this will help you
- 4:33guys get out of the perfect student mindset as well.
- 4:37Because of this, I do see a lot of people holding back and going
- 4:40for flight because they think that things have to be aligned
- 4:42perfectly again. That their confidence has to be
- 4:45there. That they have to be 100%
- 4:47confident before even going for the goal.
- 4:49That their time, they have to have all this amount of time to
- 4:52go for it. That their circumstances have to
- 4:54align it perfectly. And it is just like having a
- 4:57baby or just like getting married.
- 4:59There are no perfect circumstances, time, or levels
- 5:02of confidence. You just have to go for it.
- 5:05So being successful in this game means that you have to embrace
- 5:10the chaos. So let's talk about what that
- 5:12means. That means dealing with things
- 5:15as they come. When I first started out in
- 5:18flight, this is the biggest thing that I learned.
- 5:21I was used to an ICU environment where you had a big team, you
- 5:26had intensivists, you had your pharmacist, you had ancillary
- 5:29staff, you have lab, you had all these people.
- 5:33And because you have all these drips and all these things going
- 5:36on, I was always the person who had everything perfectly
- 5:40labeled, changed out all of my lines when they were due, just
- 5:46had everything always organized. And then I got into flight and I
- 5:51remember my very first scene call that I went on as an
- 5:55orientee and I got the the Ivy and it wasn't great.
- 6:02I mean, I wasn't used to putting in a ton of Ivs.
- 6:04We did ultrasound Ivs, but we didn't do a ton of Ivs in ICU.
- 6:08And so there was blood everywhere.
- 6:10I wasn't holding enough pressure.
- 6:12And I was trying to make this nice little covering for my Ivy.
- 6:17And I remember my person who was training me, I was like, we're
- 6:20never going to do that again. And he was like, you need to
- 6:23learn to embrace the chaos. And so that's the biggest thing
- 6:26that I learned as a flight nurse is like, you have to deal with
- 6:28things as they come and embrace the chaos, meaning you can't do
- 6:32things perfectly. And so another example that I
- 6:38want to give with you in, in embracing the chaos is knowing
- 6:42that life is going to keep on happening.
- 6:46Things are going to keep on coming.
- 6:48Circumstances, obstacles will always, always be there.
- 6:52There will never be perfect timing to go to flight.
- 6:55There will never be a perfect time in your life when bad
- 6:58things aren't happening or you're not facing obstacles.
- 7:01In fact, I really believe that when you decide that you want to
- 7:04grow and you want to level up, that's when the universe is
- 7:07going to ask if you really want it, and they're going to ask if
- 7:11you really want it by throwing things at you to see if you
- 7:14really want it. And so embracing the chaos means
- 7:17knowing that there's always going to be life circumstances,
- 7:21obstacles are going to come up, things are going to happen in
- 7:23your life, and there is not a perfect time.
- 7:26So as you learn to embrace it, that's when you can really learn
- 7:31to push through it and that you can, obstacles and everything do
- 7:37it and accomplish it. I wanted to give you an example
- 7:40of where I really learned to embrace the chaos and flight.
- 7:44And I had a patient, a really critical patient, and we had to
- 7:49move aircrafts 3 times. Actually with this patient, and
- 7:56I'm not going to give the specifics of it, but throughout
- 8:01moving that patient three different times, having to do 3
- 8:04different charts, I realized that I could have quit each of
- 8:09those moments. I could have been like, this is
- 8:10too hard, this is too much, this is too strenuous for the
- 8:14patient. This is too strenuous for my
- 8:16team. And there were times that I made
- 8:18that call, but I didn't feel like or my, and my team didn't
- 8:23feel like in this instance, we needed to.
- 8:24We kept pushing and we kept doing it.
- 8:26And it ended up being a very long call, a lot longer than we
- 8:28wanted with again, three different charged with three
- 8:30different movements of aircrafts.
- 8:33But what I learned at the end of this was that I grew the
- 8:36capacity to really do some hard things.
- 8:39I grew the capacity to not give up and to believe that I could
- 8:46keep going and that I could always figure it out.
- 8:49And that's like one of my go to thoughts.
- 8:51If you listen to my podcast and you've listened to anything that
- 8:53I've kind of put out there, like my go to thought is like my team
- 8:56and I are always going to figure it out.
- 8:58I'm always going to figure out no matter what comes my way.
- 9:00And I just want to offer you the same thought.
- 9:02Obstacles are going to come. Things are going to come in your
- 9:05way. There's never going to be
- 9:06perfect timing, but you have the capability to always figure it
- 9:10out. And when you can become that
- 9:12person who does that, it does not matter what comes your way.
- 9:17Another example of this, and I've offered this before too, is
- 9:20when I first started out in the ICU as a brand new new grad.
- 9:24I remember like walking up the stairs, it was 2 levels of
- 9:27stairs every day to my job and thinking, I hope I don't get a
- 9:30sick patient today. I hope my patient doesn't code.
- 9:32I hope they don't die on me. And then I remember after four
- 9:35years of working at ICU, walking up the that stairway confidently
- 9:39and thinking, do it code, see what happens.
- 9:44My team and I are going to bring you back.
- 9:47And that comes with embracing the chaos that comes with
- 9:51leaning into the uncomfortable moments and knowing you're not
- 9:55going to do it perfectly. Things are not going to go
- 9:57perfectly. And if anything, flight really
- 10:00prepares you that your plan A is never going to work.
- 10:04There were rare times where my plan A was the plan that worked.
- 10:10You had to plan for plan ABC and everything to Z.
- 10:14And that was an example of the multiple aircrafts call.
- 10:16I mean, there was just no planning.
- 10:18There was not a lot of planning with that.
- 10:20You had to just roll with the punches and go with the chaos.
- 10:23And so when you can become the person who grows the capacity to
- 10:29embrace the chaos and know that no matter what comes your way
- 10:34that you are going to figure it out, then there will be nothing
- 10:37that will stop you. And I do want to offer you to
- 10:40get out of this mentality of this perfect student mindset.
- 10:44You got to learn to embrace the chaos.
- 10:45And that's what getting to flight is about.
- 10:48Knowing it's not going to be a straight line.
- 10:50This is not about everybody wants the end result.
- 10:53This is not about just getting the flight.
- 10:55This is about who you become in the process and that person who
- 11:00learns to feel overwhelmed and yet still continues on.
- 11:05So that was the first one is just embracing the chaos.
- 11:07The second one is kind of what I talked about in the first one,
- 11:10but growing your belief and capability in yourself.
- 11:13Now it does not matter how many steps you take, how much you
- 11:16build your resume, how much time and experience that you have, if
- 11:20you lack the belief and capability of yourself, flight
- 11:23will not happen for you. And it also can also, on the
- 11:27other, be as simple, on the other end, be as simple as if
- 11:31you grow your belief in yourself, your mindset that you
- 11:36can do it and your capability that it's possible for you.
- 11:40That alone without the time and experience can be the thing that
- 11:45gets you there. That's the thing inside the
- 11:47flight prep Academy that we start to grow as soon as nursing
- 11:50school or prior nursing school when people join.
- 11:53Because if you have the belief, if you grow the capability to be
- 11:58able to do hard things, that's the thing that's going to keep
- 12:01you in forward momentum. That's the thing that no matter
- 12:04what happens is going to get you all the way to that flight goal
- 12:08and beyond for however long you want to fly.
- 12:11When you feel capable to be able to withstand and handle anything
- 12:16and have this strong belief in yourself and your team.
- 12:19It doesn't matter what is thrown to you, you, you will get
- 12:23through it. And I'm not saying you're not
- 12:25going to feel embarrassed. You're not going to feel
- 12:27disappointed. You're not going to have doubt.
- 12:28No, you're going to have all of those things, but you're going
- 12:31to be able to be the person who can navigate themselves through
- 12:34it. So belief is everything.
- 12:36Yes, you do need the three years, ERICU, but there is a
- 12:40reason why I'm helping people get hired before the three years
- 12:42right now. Because when you grow that
- 12:44belief and you have that so solid in yourself, it doesn't
- 12:49matter what actions you take. It doesn't matter what your
- 12:54resume looks like. It doesn't matter what you have
- 12:57stacked up. Because if you believe it, then
- 13:00companies will as well because they'll see it and they'll feel
- 13:03it from you too. Part of growing your belief in
- 13:06your capability in yourself is being very future focused.
- 13:09Now. I see a lot of people think
- 13:12about what happened to them in the past and then that limits
- 13:15what they think that they can create.
- 13:17So a lot of people, for example, look at evidence of what they've
- 13:22created or what they've not created, and then they limit
- 13:24themselves and say, well, because I haven't done it
- 13:26before, because because I haven't gone for flight before,
- 13:29I, I, I don't think that I can do it.
- 13:31I can't believe therefore, that it's possible for me or that I
- 13:34can create it. And that's what really being
- 13:37past focus looks like. Another, another example of
- 13:40being past focus is when you live in regret.
- 13:42Oh, I wish I would have done this or I wish I would have done
- 13:44this when I was younger, or I wish I would have done this
- 13:47sooner, or I wish I would have taken this route instead of this
- 13:50route that's very past focused future focus.
- 13:53And what I coach and what I really, really teach on inside
- 13:56my program and with all my clients is we're always thinking
- 13:59of where we're going and what are the subset of actions we
- 14:03need to be taking now that will get us to that future person.
- 14:06So if flight is your goal, what do you look like as a flight
- 14:10nurse? What do you look like as a
- 14:11flight medic? What beliefs do you have about
- 14:14yourself when you go into shift every day?
- 14:17What do you think is possible for you?
- 14:20What's your confidence level? What, how do you, how do you
- 14:24think about yourself? How do you, how do you talk
- 14:28about yourself? How do you show up in rooms?
- 14:32How do you command the room in critical situations?
- 14:35That's the person we need to be thinking about.
- 14:37And then we make every decision in the present from that future
- 14:40you. And we try to get to her or him
- 14:42as soon as possible. When we're future focused, we
- 14:47are not limited by our past and what we can create.
- 14:50We're always thinking about what is it that we need to be working
- 14:53on now that's going to get us closer to our future self.
- 14:56And so I'm always going to push you to be thinking about what,
- 15:00how are you in two years? How are you in five years?
- 15:03How are you in 10? Something I've been like really
- 15:05thinking about too, is what am I gonna be like in 20 years?
- 15:08So right now I'm 41. What am I gonna be like at 61?
- 15:13What, how am I going to feel about myself?
- 15:16What is that 61 year old gonna come back?
- 15:20And what's the wisdom that I could tell myself right now?
- 15:25And one thing that I've been thinking about with this
- 15:26question is that she would definitely be saying, quit
- 15:30worrying so much. It's going to happen.
- 15:35So you can spend the whole time worrying or you can spend the
- 15:38whole time like enjoying it and going for it.
- 15:41And one thing that I always want to offer people that I wish I
- 15:45would have told my earlier self prior to getting into flight.
- 15:50And one thing that I always tried to tell my clients is
- 15:53enjoy this process because you will never be the person who's
- 15:58going for it again. And after you get the job, it
- 16:01feels great. It does, but you realize how
- 16:06much you've grown. And you can spend the time
- 16:08worrying about getting there, or you can also spend the time
- 16:11enjoying it. Enjoying what your first flight
- 16:14interview is going to be like, enjoying what it's like to get
- 16:16your first offer, enjoying your first flight, enjoying your
- 16:20first sink call, enjoying your first transfer, enjoying the
- 16:25first life that you got to save and you were directly a part of.
- 16:31And so that that is one thing that I, I want to offer you guys
- 16:34is grow the belief and capability in yourself from the
- 16:37future you. So the future you.
- 16:39One exercise that I talk about a lot is think of you as that
- 16:44flight nurse already or think of you as that flight medic right
- 16:47now. What would that flight nurse or
- 16:51flight medic come back and tell you?
- 16:54What's the wisdom that they would give you?
- 16:57And if you need to take a second to pause this episode, that's
- 17:00fine. But what is that future flight
- 17:04nurse of you? What would that person come back
- 17:08and tell you right now? What's the wisdom they would
- 17:10impart with you? And I want you to really think
- 17:13about that question. What would they tell you to do
- 17:15more of right now? What would they tell you to stop
- 17:18doing? What would you spend more time
- 17:21doing? How would you get supported?
- 17:24What are some decisions that you would be making?
- 17:27This is really important in growing your belief and
- 17:29capability in yourself and getting out of the perfect
- 17:32student mindset. The third thing that I want to
- 17:35impart on you is get support. One thing that I can see that
- 17:40stops a lot of people from getting to flight is that they
- 17:43think they're very alone in their thoughts and their
- 17:45feelings. They think no one else is
- 17:47thinking, am I good enough? Do I have enough time and
- 17:50experience? Do I have what it takes?
- 17:53Sometimes having shame or disappointment about not getting
- 17:57an interview or failing at a test.
- 18:00And that's what stops them from getting there.
- 18:02And so I really created the Flight Prep Academy because I
- 18:05want people to be in a community with other people who are going
- 18:08towards the same goal, to realize you're not alone in your
- 18:10thoughts and feelings and you're not I'll alone and you're
- 18:14thinking and be able to have a safe place where they can get
- 18:17the support to express those emotions.
- 18:19And then also to not give up. So whether it's in my group,
- 18:23another coach or another support system, get the support that you
- 18:27need as you're going through this goal so that you can
- 18:29release the shame of what you're thinking of, what you're
- 18:32feeling, and allow those feelings to come up, allow a
- 18:35safe place to vent. And sometimes you guys, I have
- 18:37to be honest with you. It can't be the people closest
- 18:40to you. It can't be your best friend.
- 18:42It can't be your spouse, it can't be your kids.
- 18:44Because they just don't get it. They want to give you
- 18:48platitudes. They want to tell you, oh, but
- 18:50it's OK. Like, you're strong, you can do
- 18:53it. And while that's great, you also
- 18:55need people who understand exactly what you're going
- 18:59through, who have been there and who can help you get out of this
- 19:03spiral of judgement on yourself and to be able to evaluate why
- 19:09you're getting stuck and help you move forward.
- 19:12That's really what we do inside the Flight Prep Academy is I'm
- 19:14going to help you continue to evaluate why are you stuck?
- 19:17Why are you spinning? Why are you overwhelmed and
- 19:20confused? And what can we be doing to get
- 19:23you out of it? What are the next steps?
- 19:25What are your best theories of what are the next steps that we
- 19:28need to be taking? So get the support that you need
- 19:30and get, and I want to really offer you get a mentor, a coat,
- 19:34someone who is going or been where you want to go.
- 19:39Because that's makes a huge difference is like you need to
- 19:43have someone in your corner who knows what you've been through
- 19:45and also has done it because they're going to prevent you
- 19:48from making the same common mistakes.
- 19:50And they're also going to understand without a shadow of a
- 19:54doubt exactly what you're going through.
- 19:56So get the support that you need so that you can let go of some
- 19:59of that shame, regret, and feeling stuck.
- 20:03OK, the last thing that I want to impart on you guys and
- 20:06getting out of this perfect student mindset is take care of
- 20:10yourself. Gosh, we've been all through a
- 20:13lot in the last even five years as healthcare workers, as
- 20:18critical care nurses, as first responders.
- 20:24The world stopped and we were the ones still working.
- 20:28And I think sometimes, I mean I definitely have gone through
- 20:33this where I just give of myself so much and the jobs I forget to
- 20:38take care of myself. It's been so weird.
- 20:40But about 3 years ago I started to get these weird hives like
- 20:46all over my body. It's so bad that I would have to
- 20:48call in to shift sometimes because my face would start to
- 20:52swell and my eyes would start to swell, and I would have to take
- 20:54Benadryl like around the clock. And I remember going to my
- 20:57doctor, and my doctor was like, do you have high levels of
- 21:00stress? And I'm like, no, I mean, you
- 21:02know, I work a stressful job, but I feel like I
- 21:04compartmentalize. I handle it really well.
- 21:06I don't feel stressed. And now having some space from
- 21:09it, three years later, I realized I was super anxious.
- 21:14I wasn't handling it well. I wasn't taking care of myself.
- 21:18And I think that was my body's way of internalizing, like you
- 21:23do have high stress levels and you aren't taking care of
- 21:26yourself 1st. And I think like for a year, I
- 21:30dealt with this hives on a daily basis and having to like, take
- 21:33antihistamines and like be drowsy all the time and all of
- 21:36that stuff. And I realized like, I just
- 21:39didn't take care of myself. So I've been in that spin cycle
- 21:42before too. And I do think it comes
- 21:44especially with the jobs that we do where we are constantly
- 21:49taking care of other people. Like we thrive on that.
- 21:52We love that. But it does come down to putting
- 21:56your oxygen mask on 1st when the plane is going down.
- 22:00We can't be the first people to pass out.
- 22:03People need us and they need us in a big way.
- 22:07How we show up in a big way daily in our jobs and what we
- 22:10do, it's so important. And yeah, it's the hardest thing
- 22:14I think sometimes for us to take care of ourselves.
- 22:15So put your oxygen mask on 1st so that we can take care of
- 22:19other people and our families and in the jobs that we do.
- 22:23And that looks like simple for me.
- 22:26What I've realized is going for what I want always.
- 22:32I think that's what's created a lot of success for myself.
- 22:35And what I really want to empower and help a lot of people
- 22:37do is going for what you want. Going for flight does not mean
- 22:42you're selfish. It actually means you will be
- 22:46able to be an example to your children.
- 22:48You will be able to be an example to other people of what
- 22:52is possible. And you can have both.
- 22:56You can be a mother and a very successful flight clinician.
- 23:00You can have all of those things.
- 23:03I'm not saying it's going to be easy.
- 23:04It's not going to be easy, but you are capable of being the
- 23:08person who has both. And taking care of yourself is
- 23:12not selfish. Getting what you want, going for
- 23:15your goals, that's the most compassionate gift that you can
- 23:20give yourself. Because when you are full, when
- 23:23your cup is full, you actually will be able to give so much
- 23:27more and to have so much meaning behind clocking in every day
- 23:32into a job that is so meaningful for you because you did it for
- 23:36you. Not for other people, not for
- 23:38your kids, not for your family, but for you.
- 23:41That makes a world of difference.
- 23:42And I can tell you that by example that that there's
- 23:47nothing that can replace that. And so I want to offer you to
- 23:51get to this goal, take care of yourself, fill your cup 1st.
- 23:55And I promise you if you fill your cup, you will be able to
- 23:58give tenfold more than you are currently getting.
- 24:02So I want to leave you guys with that.
- 24:05Let's get out of the perfect student mindset.
- 24:08There is not a perfect way to get to flight.
- 24:10It actually require you to embrace the chaos, get out of
- 24:14the thoughts of it. You have to be confident because
- 24:17you don't. You actually have to have doubt
- 24:18to go for this goal. Your circumstances will not
- 24:21perfectly align. You will always be the person
- 24:23who has obstacles coming up. That is just life.
- 24:26So I am really going to teach you to become the person to grow
- 24:29the belief, to grow the capacity to be the person who is always
- 24:33going to figure it out. Embrace the chaos, always go
- 24:37with your gut, put yourself first.
- 24:39That's what we're doing inside the Flight Prep Academy.
