- 0:07On May 18, 1971, the Montreal Canadiens faced the Chicago Blackhawks for Game 7 of the 1971 Stanley Cup Finals.
- 0:16Claude Roull was hired to coach Montreal in 1968, replacing the legendary Toe Blake.
- 0:21He started the 1971 campaign as well, but decided to step down 23 games into the season
- 0:26because the pressure of life behind the bench was affecting his health.
- 0:29So, assistant coach Al McNeil took the helm for the rest of the season.
- 0:33The Habs stunned the heavily favored Boston Bruins in the opening round of the playoffs
- 0:37and then defeated the Minnesota North Stars in order to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Blackhawks.
- 0:42Chicago was coached by Billy Ray and were looking to win their first Stanley Cup since 1961.
- 0:46They had been eliminated during the semifinals and six of the previous nine seasons.
- 0:50Chicago started the season well, with a record of 18-4-5 in the first 27 games.
- 0:55The Hawks stayed hot throughout the season and easily won the West Division with a club record 49 victories and 107 points,
- 1:02finishing 20 points ahead of the second place St. Louis Blues.
- 1:05The Hawks were led by Bobby Hall, who scored a team-high 44 goals and 52 assists for 96 points,
- 1:11which placed him fifth in scoring in the NHL.
- 1:14This audio recording is from the Chicago Radio broadcast featuring announcers Lloyd Pettit and Harvey Wittenberg.
- 1:20We pause five seconds for station identification.
- 1:25This is WMAQ Chicago, the home of Kurt Russell from 6 to 10 every morning.
- 1:32So as has been said in many, many previous Stanley Cup competitions, there is no tomorrow for these clubs.
- 1:39This will be the final game no matter what happens.
- 1:42And of course, someone was kidding a little bit ago, said, well, what happens if it goes into overtime?
- 1:47Then sudden death overtime, and someone also kidded by saying, and what would happen if it turned out to be a 12-day overtime?
- 1:54Well, I think Harvey, if that happened, if it turned out to be a 12-day overtime, all of us, including all the players and the coaches,
- 2:01probably would be dead by the time that was over.
- 2:05Well, what they do is just declare it a tie and then start to back to seven all over again.
- 2:11Well, I'll tell you, Harvey, we've had a lot of excitement, a lot of hockey throughout the season and moving into the Stanley Cup competition more and more thrilled.
- 2:19We pointed a little bit ago back to the New York series, the semifinal series between the Hawks and the Rangers.
- 2:25And at that time we said that that was one of the greatest series we had ever seen in Stanley Cup competition.
- 2:32But you certainly can't knock the caliber of hockey we've seen between the Hawks and the Canadians in the final series.
- 2:38Well, it's just been amazing, Lloyd, the way these players have gone through these three playoff series.
- 2:44We battled the Canadians during a regular season on even terms.
- 2:47Each team won three, and here we are three and three in a deciding game.
- 2:51And, you know, you just couldn't ask for any more action than the excitement that we've got sitting before us tonight.
- 2:56And we'll be back. What's the start of the first period action right after this?
- 3:01See Skill Power Tools at Rut brothers and see why nobody was ever sorry he bumped the best there is.
- 3:09Skill at Rut brothers, 103-17, South Michigan, Chicago.
- 3:14The officials on the ice headed out by John Ashley, the referee, the line from Matt Pavilich and John D'Amico and Harvey.
- 3:21John Ashley, as usual, did not receive a warm welcome.
- 3:25Well, the fans right now are chanting Ashley's above, referring perhaps to that game number three in the Stanley Cup Finals
- 3:34where we had to lead 2-0 again and the Canadians defeated us 4-2.
- 3:37And a lot of the fans were up in arms over that.
- 3:40But, you know, we had a conversation with Neil Armstrong after the game in Montreal.
- 3:46And he said that as far as he's concerned, John's the best in the league.
- 3:50Neil is the veteran linesman in the NHL.
- 3:53And here comes the heart.
- 3:56The heart.
- 3:58The heart.
- 4:01The heart.
- 4:07The heart.
- 4:22A standing ovation at Chicago Stadium as the Chicago Blackhawks come on the stand of more than 20,000 people
- 4:30jammed in this anaphyse, roaring and screaming their approval, not only of a tremendously successful hockey team
- 4:37but perhaps expressing all the thanks and satisfaction to their athletes for one thrill after another
- 4:44throughout the 1977-71 season, no matter what happens here tonight.
- 4:49And of course, this again is a psychological factor with each member of the Chicago Blackhawks knowing
- 4:55that 99.9% of the people of Chicago Stadium are their backers, their supporters, and want them very badly
- 5:03to defeat the Canadians and be the Stanley Cup champions in 1971.
- 5:09It's enough to give you goose pimples, Harvey.
- 5:11It certainly is. It's a thing of an excitement here, Lloyd. The fans are on their feet.
- 5:15I've got a bunch of signs talking to them. Hock, go, Hock, go. Hock Stanley Cup champions, 1977-1.
- 5:22Whatever happens this game tonight, I know the fans are proud of the Blackhawks,
- 5:26a fine job and a great show and great job they've done all season.
- 5:31And the positions on the ice. Ken Dryden will be in the nets for the Canadians to our left.
- 5:36And Tony Esposito for the Blackhawks in the nets to our right.
- 5:41And the Canadians, therefore, will be moving from our left to our right, and of course the Chicago Blackhawks in the opposite direction.
- 5:48The Canadians uniforms, they're traveling in a ball, basically the red jerseys, the blue pants, the white numerals,
- 5:54and the red, white, and blue stripe stockings. The Chicago Blackhawks in their home uniforms,
- 5:59basically the white jerseys, the dark numerals, the black pants with the stripes down the side,
- 6:03and the red, black, and white stripe stockings.
- 6:06Taking their positions at their respective blue lines now and facing Old Glory off to our right.
- 6:12And the officials also in position at center ice.
- 6:15John Ashley, the referee, the linesman Matt Pavlich and John D'Amico.
- 6:20And now, ladies and gentlemen, from a very hot, a very sticky, but excited Chicago Stadium, our national anthem.
- 6:29Our national anthem.
- 6:32Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
- 6:53Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
- 7:09And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
- 7:26Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
- 7:56So this literally will be a game that will be heard around the world.
- 8:15Armed Forces Radio, the entire United States, and from coast to coast in Canada.
- 8:20Radio, television, newspaper writers from all around the world reporting this the final game.
- 8:25Bellamo and Makita ready for the opening faceoff and the draw taken by the Canadians.
- 8:29Back into the Canadian zone at the point, to the far side of the blue line left hand.
- 8:32LaFerriere jumps into the Hawk Zone.
- 8:34And off the back for him and off the back of the Hawk cage, poked at by Cornwallier.
- 8:37But off the near board of the Chicago zone and Dennis Hall digs it out to center-right.
- 8:41Mann takes the long shot that's wide to the right off the far corner taken by Mahavalech and he leads it past Bill White.
- 8:46All the way down the length of the ice into the Hawk Zone.
- 8:49Stapleton is there to touch it and it's an ice and call against the Montreal Canadiens.
- 8:56This broadcast by the authority of the Black Hawk properties.
- 8:59Any use of the description or play-by-play without the consent of the Black Hawk properties is prohibited.
- 9:07Dan Makita winged on the left by Dennis Hall and the right by Eric Nesterreko.
- 9:11The two back man, Bill White and Pat Stapleton.
- 9:14Makita facing off with Bellamo to the left.
- 9:16Off the right to the right of the draw of the Canadiens.
- 9:19LaPointe to his blue line.
- 9:20Off the center-right to the center-line and dumping a long shot past Esposito.
- 9:23Off the backboard to the stick of Nesterreko.
- 9:25Wheels around on the far corner. Leads it ahead of Makita off the far board.
- 9:28Overled.
- 9:29Off the center-right, dumped back into the Hawk Zone by LaFerriere to Stapleton.
- 9:32And the pass out by Stapleton.
- 9:34A new center by Cornwallier.
- 9:35Dropping it back to Bellamo.
- 9:36And Bellamo is down in front and the backhander by Cornwallier is wide and into the near corner.
- 9:40Picked up by Makita.
- 9:41Off the near board, Dennis Hall to the far side.
- 9:43Center-right right in front of the Hawk Net and Frank Mahabalic to Bellamo.
- 9:46And Bellamo tips it down into the Hawk Zone.
- 9:48Near corner, Cornwallier and Dennis Hall.
- 9:51Behind the net is Dennis Hall.
- 9:52Slips, falls down the puck.
- 9:53The whistle blows.
- 9:54We'll have a faceoff in the Hawk Zone.
- 9:59Get power to clean with power to burn.
- 10:01At a can of new STP double power gasoline treatment, you'll really feel the difference.
- 10:07Just one minute into the action here at Chicago Stadium.
- 10:12There have been a couple of flurries in the part of both clubs, but neither goaltender has yet been sorely tested.
- 10:17Good ice position for the Canadians in the Black Hawk Zone.
- 10:20A faceoff in the faceoff circle to the left of Tony Esposito.
- 10:23Chico Mackey is in position for that faceoff and his opposition will be Pete Mahabalic.
- 10:29Pete Mahabalic and Chico Mackey ready for the faceoff.
- 10:32And the draw into the slot.
- 10:33But back to the blue line.
- 10:34Here's a quick shot and a save by Esposito.
- 10:36As it rebounds off the near board of the Hawk Zone, if Bobby Hall breaks up the play and picks up the puck.
- 10:41Goes to the side of the net.
- 10:42Off the backboard.
- 10:43Leads it ahead to Chico Mackey on the left wing.
- 10:45And Chico trying to lead it out.
- 10:46It comes right back to him.
- 10:47That is blue line.
- 10:48Nice pull.
- 10:49Moves it out to center line.
- 10:50To the center line.
- 10:51Chico Mackey to the blue line.
- 10:52He's spun around the left wing.
- 10:53And we have our first penalty coming up.
- 10:55A call against the Montreal Canadiens Harper for holding.
- 10:59And we'll be back with more in a moment.
- 11:02First break of the game goes to the Black Hawks.
- 11:05We'll get a bar play after 30.
- 11:07And we hope we can click on it with a faceoff in the Montreal Zone.
- 11:10Harper in the penalty box for holding.
- 11:12The draw to Bobby Hall.
- 11:13Throws to the far corner.
- 11:14Around behind the net.
- 11:15LaPointe is there.
- 11:16Shoves it ahead around the near corner.
- 11:17Off the near board.
- 11:18And Pippen Martin takes it.
- 11:19It's thrown out to center ice.
- 11:20And poked away.
- 11:21At the center line.
- 11:22Mahavalec.
- 11:23He's checked by Stapleton.
- 11:24But Mahavalec dumps it into the Hawk Zone.
- 11:25And Bobby Hall retreats.
- 11:26Off the backboard.
- 11:27Checked by Pete Mahavalec.
- 11:28He leaves it for Pippen Martin.
- 11:29Martin overskates it.
- 11:30Has to retreat it to the Hawk backboard.
- 11:31And Bobby Hall behind the net coming out of the left side.
- 11:32Leads ahead to Chico Mackey.
- 11:33Off the near board.
- 11:34Chico out to center ice to Pippen Martin.
- 11:40Martin at the blue line.
- 11:41Loses control of the puck.
- 11:42And it's thrown back into the Hawk Zone.
- 11:43Over the near board.
- 11:44And into the Chicago crowd.
- 11:45One minute and 25 seconds left on the penalty.
- 11:46It's Sucasa for exciting Mexican food refreshments and entertainment.
- 11:47That's Sucasa.
- 11:4849 East Ontario.
- 11:49I have a hunch that I know John Ash is going to call a very tight hockey game tonight.
- 11:50A very close game.
- 11:51Anything that is close to a penalty I think he's going to call a penalty.
- 11:52He's going to call a penalty.
- 11:53He's going to call a penalty.
- 11:54He's going to call a penalty.
- 11:55He's going to call a penalty.
- 11:56He's going to call a penalty.

- 12:12Stapleton from center ice.
- 12:13Jumping in around the near corner.
- 12:14Mahai Manette stopped by Dryden.
- 12:15Dryden leaves it behind.
- 12:16Mahai Manette goes to the far board.
- 12:17And Frank Mahavalec.

- 12:21Stolen by Bobby Hall.
- 12:22Brings it out to center ice to Chico Mackie.
- 12:23Mackie on the left wing.
- 12:24Moves it out to the right.
- 12:25And it's a two-point lead.
- 12:26Jimmy Pappen was unable to clear in time.
- 12:29It looks like both teams are playing it very cautiously on this Hawke power play.
- 12:34They want to make sure that they've got control of the puck.
- 12:41They move it into the Canadian Zone without getting a straight pass goal so the Canadians
- 12:45might have a breakaway.
- 12:46You can be over enthusiastic on a power play opportunity and leave yourselves wide open
- 12:47to a one-on-one or two-on-one breakaway.
- 12:48To the Canadian Zone, Martin's taking the shot.
- 12:57And deflected away just as he got it underway.
- 13:07But the whistle had blown for the offside play.
- 13:12And the crowd at Chicago Stadium to hear the linesman whistle.
- 13:18So that was an offside play.
- 13:19Happy Canadian Blue Line.

- 13:21Dan Makita will be ready for the faceoff against Pete Mahavalec.
- 13:24One minute left on the penalty of the Hawke's power play.
- 13:26No score in the game.
- 13:27Just underway.
- 13:28A couple minutes gone.
- 13:29Two minutes and 27 seconds.
- 13:30And we have another whistle on the ice.
- 13:31And another faceoff.
- 13:32And some basic mistakes being made on the ice, Harvey.
- 13:33Have broken the first half of the game.
- 13:34And the blue line is going to be a little bit more aggressive.

- 13:50And the faceoff at center ice.
- 13:52Drawback to the Canadian zone.
- 13:53A little point with a long shot.
- 13:54The length of the rink.
- 13:55And taken by Esposito.
- 13:56Drops it off the stable and the stable of behind the net.
- 13:57Coming out of the right side.

- 14:05He's going to get it to the right side of the left wing.
- 14:08His shot is wide.
- 14:09Goes into the far corner and flip Coral.
- 14:10Folks at it around behind the net.
- 14:11It gets away from Nikita all the way into the near corner.
- 14:12Picked up by Mahalović.
- 14:13Back to the near point.
- 14:14Stapleman keeps it in.
- 14:154-4 on the near board but now out to center ice again and flip Coral.
- 14:18Coral moving toward the far board.
- 14:19Throws it down into the Canadian zone.
- 14:20Less than 30 seconds to go on the penalty and the Chicago Blackhawks have yet to front
- 14:21and right.
- 14:22Now Stapleman leading off the near board to Nikita.

- 1:11:28So Danny O'Shea got a second chance on a fine centering pass from the backboard by Tim Mucke.
- 1:11:34He shot once and then right back to it and he shot again and it just skidded along the ice and hit the lower right hand corner of the net.
- 1:11:48Well that's what hard digging and hard work behind that net count has fit Martin. Got that puck out to O'Shea and caught on the inside of his blade. He wheeled around and then fired it low in the left hand corner, beating Dryden.
- 1:12:04He's had his first goal in the playoffs this year. He had his first goal in the series against Philadelphia so he's gone for a little bit of a dry spell. That's the third of his career but it came in a big time giving the Hawks a big two goal edge now. It's really putting the pressure on the Canadians. The time of the goal will be 7.33 and either Judge Jarrett or Jimmy Papp will get the other assists along with Ben Martin on that big goal.
- 1:12:26Not to throw in a negative note but just one for Blackhawk fans to not become too optimistic at this moment. Harvey the reason being simply that we have previously left these Canadians by two goals and they have fought that.
- 1:12:40That's true. We can't let up. We have to continue the same style of play. I think the key thing in this period of light is the fact we've had two penalties against us where we're short. We've killed off the penalties and now we've come back to get a goal after some fine play by our penalty killers and it's got to give the team a big lift.
- 1:12:59Here are all the officials. Converting in center ice. Waiting for the happy degree to three to be picked up at Chicago Stadium. We'll be back with more action right after this word.
- 1:13:11The extra players who have not seen any action have come out to do a little skating on their own. Of course everybody kind of swarmed all over Danny O'Shea after he poked that short shot past the Blackhawks moved to a two to nothing lead.
- 1:13:32And this is the final game. And the crowd at Chicago Stadium has not had one quiet moment since the opening face off.
- 1:13:41Just 30 seconds before, Danny had banged it off the post but he didn't make a mistake this time as he got it that lower corner to beat Ken Wright.
- 1:13:49They still have but yet to receive the official announcement on the goal. Face off in center ice. Jarrett, far side. Throws it into the Canadian zone off the far corner behind the net stopped by Bright. J.C. Trombley throws it around the near corner.
- 1:14:03It skips out to center ice and beat Mahavlich. Mahavlich with a long shot is wide on the left side. And it bounces to the far board and Pett Martin is on it. Can't get it by Ashley.
- 1:14:10Ashley skips it out, dumps out the center ice to Martin. And Martin flipping it into the Canadian zone off the backboard. The rebound goes to J.C. Trombley. We are seven minutes. Correction, eight minutes into the second period, two to nothing.
- 1:14:21Martin takes it off the backboard, trying to center it. And Pett Martin, man on the shot. The puck slid out right to it. Now body hold, a shot. I believe it went off the crossbar. I believe it went off the crossbar. It hit the bar and came right out.
- 1:14:35There will be people who will say that puck went into the net and came right out. No argument on the part of Chicago. Center ice play. Interception, J.C. Trombley, Canadian, leading on the right wing to the far board, Hawks zone, body hold, dumps it out to center ice and J.C. Trombley.
- 1:14:50To beat Mahaville, it dumps it into the Canadian to the Chicago zone and it's an offside play. No argument, Harvey, from Chicago. So that's apparently what happened. Bobby Hall hit the crossbar.
- 1:15:05It was real quick and the goal judge has an opinion on that one, but it was up high and we're up high here and it's difficult to see, but the puck came bounding right back. And so they ruled that it hit the crossbar and that's another half inch that would have been in because it had tried to beat.
- 1:15:25The official announcement, O'Shea's goal assisted by Pipp Martin at 733, 2 to nothing in favor of Chicago. As the puck is dumped into the blue line of the Canadians, Villamo off and airborne, gives it to Frank Mahaville, retreats inside the blue line, now moves out to center ice past Makita.
- 1:15:40To the center line, Mahaville to the right wing, pass back to the leading and Frank Villamo couldn't get the shot away. Conway with a shot and Esposito makes the save.
- 1:15:55Well, Harvey, that second goal certainly appears to have lifted the Blackhawks.
- 1:16:00It changes the complexion of the game. The Canadians are going to have to open up a little bit. There's still a lot of time left in the game, but they're going to, they're playing more for an opportunity and now they're going to have to make their own opportunity.
- 1:16:10I'm not sure there would be another assist on that goal, Lloyd. Maybe we'll get it a little later on either for Jarrett or Jim Pappas.
- 1:16:16Face off to the right of Tony Esposito, Stan Makita for Chicago and Sean Belarbo for the Canadians. The draw in the veneer corner and Bill White has it on his stick, throws it behind the net to the far corner and Stapleton, checked by Conway. Dennis Hollis checks out on the far board.
- 1:16:30And the puck slides out to center ice, taken by Makita, Makita, the Nesterenko over the blue line of the right wing, Nesterenko, Fahy trying to lead it into the slot, deflected and the Canadians come back 3 on 2.
- 1:16:39Led by Mahavalec down the left line, over the blue line and the pass back to Mahavalec, broken up, Dennis Hollis clears it into the near corner as Conway throws it to the far board and Mahavalec trying to center.
- 1:16:50He's put down behind the net, right in front of Conway as it pokes out for his stick by Stapleton and off the near board of the Hawks out as Nesterenko fights for it, gives to Stapleton.
- 1:16:58Led ahead to center ice to Dennis Hollis, to Makita on the right wing, over the blue line and dumping it into the far corner of the Canadian zone and Terry Hopper is on it for Montreal. Led out to center ice and taken by Stapleton to Makita, off of his skate to the far board, Makita regains and dumps it again into the Canadian zone, onto the stick, up right.
- 1:17:14Picked up by LaFerriere, LaFerriere moving toward the near boards, out to his blue line and leading broken up by Bill White and Bill White throws it back into the Canadian zone. Behind the net it goes to the far corner and we are halfway through the second period.
- 1:17:282-0 Chicago, Chico Mackey to body hold, Chico back to body on the left wing, body hold from Chico Mackey to Bill White. Bill White on the right wing is passed, deflected into the near corner and Coral trying to center it out, it's intercepted by LaMare.
- 1:17:39LaMare out to center ice, one on three. LaMare over the blue line, a quick shot and a save by Esposito and he clears it for Heimlund off to the side of the net and Bill White.
- 1:17:48Bill White back to the hot blue line, off the skate to Chico Mackey to the blue line, Chico Mackey to Coral, Coral with a shot and a save and flying into the left wing with body hold but Dwighton held out.
- 1:18:00We pause five seconds for stationary identification. This is WMAQ Chicago where you can hear Bob Beasley from 6 until 10.30. A good move Harvey by Dwighton and holding on to that because Bobby was coming on.
- 1:18:14A fine pass by Cliff Coral, a hard shot as the Hawks are flying and as we mentioned with this tempo and the heat of the building, they're changing lines about almost every minute. It's really the pace has not slackened in this series from game to game.
- 1:18:31Good ice position for Chicago. Face off will be for the last of 10, Dwighton, a black box lead in two and other. They have played 10 minutes and 26 seconds of the second period.
- 1:18:44And the draw to the Canadians in the Montreal zone, deflected after center ice. LaMare gives to Harvey Richard, Harvey Richard to the blue line, leading on the right wing right back.
- 1:18:52It counts to Richard but the play is broken but the whistle had already flown at the blue line.
- 1:18:58Today is that a good two on one situation but it was a half stride over that blue line before the puck moved in and so there was an offside. As we mentioned with the capacity crowd here, it's very difficult to hear that whistle.
- 1:19:10Face off and center ice, possession to the Canadians, LaPoint winds a long shot as wide of left side, off the backboard and cleared away by Esposito into the near corner.
- 1:19:18Magnuson goes a solid check and they hold the puck on the near corner of the Hawks own and will have a face off to the right of Tony Esposito. Blackhawks leading by a score of two to one, two to nothing that is, coming up to the 11 minute mark in the second period.
- 1:19:32Dennis Holl in the first period, a power play goal and Danny O'Chay in the second period assisted by Martin.
- 1:19:41Bill White and Pat Stapleton coming back on the ice. What a series those two guys have had, Harvey.
- 1:19:46Well they've been unbelievable. Bill White has the best record of any player in the playoff series. What they call plus and minus and the fewest goals scored while he was on the ice and most goals scored for his team while he was on the ice.
- 1:19:58From the face off and the Hawks own, the point shot is broken up and deflected in center ice but taken by J.C. Tromblade just inside the blue line.
- 1:20:04Pappen almost intercepted, LaPoint has it. Throws to LaMare at the blue line of the near side, left to the right wing out at center ice, broken up as Rochefort couldn't hold it.
- 1:20:12Now Danny O'Shea in the Hawks own, back handed out to center ice to Jimmy Pappen off the near board, he gets it to Martin. Martin over the blue line on the right wing, Martin the slap shot and wide to the left side, just missed the open side and that was the far side to the right of Ken Dryke.
- 1:20:25Back to center ice, now to the blue line, Jimmy Pappen's pass intended for Martin, broken up by LaPointe and dumped back to center ice, far side on O'Shea and O'Shea wheels around and throws it into the Canadian zone.
- 1:20:34Behind the net, J.C. Tromblade starts skating it out of the Canadian zone, he's at his blue line, he's poor checked by Chico Mackey but he continues to the Hawks blue line, he brings it out but he brought it out as Henri Richard with Aubry in the Hawks own and it's offside.
- 1:20:47We'll be back with more after this.
- 1:20:51Black Hawks to the Canadians, nothing, face off will be outside, the Hawks blue line on the far side of the rink, dumped into the Hawks own of Magnuson, into the far side of Jarrett, Jarrett's pass intercepted by Pete Mahavlach, into the far corner right on his front and a save by Esposito, he beat Rayshon Hull for about 5 feet away coming in from the far board.
- 1:21:09And on the near board of the Hawks own the puck is held on the board, Magnuson having a little trouble, Rayshon Hull has his gloves off along with Coral.
- 1:21:21Coral lost his helmet on the play as we're grappling along the board and it looks like Cliff got a little headlock into Rayshon and he wants to get a piece of McFurgison out steps in and right now doesn't look like he's going to issue any penalties.
- 1:21:34Magnuson and Ferguson had a little bit of a holding match on the near board with Coral involved with Rayshon Hull, actually gives no indication of penalties.
- 1:21:50That was a close call as Jarrett's pass just went off the edge of his stick, it was picked up by the Canadians but once again Tony Esposito made the save and the puck was cleared off to the side.
- 1:22:05Coming up to the 12 minute mark in the second period, two to nothing Hawks, Pete Mahavalech for the Canadians and Chico Mackey for Chicago to the right of Tony Esposito. The draw taken by Ferguson, he kicks it into the slot but it's deflected into the far corner of the Hawks own and stapled it.
- 1:22:20Chico Mackey, two on one on the left wing, Chico Mackey a shot and a save and a rebound, the puck is still free off the corner of the crease, poked out by Dryton and now it is whistled at as Cliff Coral having a little more trouble with Rayshon Hull out in front.
- 1:22:36Blackhawks having a great opportunity that time of a two on one play but Ken Dryton again stood firm on the shot by Chico Mackey.
- 1:22:46That puck was just laying loose right out in the crease and Chico was trying to swing around and just get a stick on him and tip it by but he claimed he was being held in the crease there but referee John Ashley made no call.
- 1:22:59So we have seven minutes and 58 seconds remaining to be played in the second period, two to nothing in favor of the Hawks.
- 1:23:06Face off to the right of Dryton.
- 1:23:11It will be between Chico Mackey and Pete Mohamedich.
- 1:23:19And now they're set to go.
- 1:23:23And the draw is poked right out of the Canadian zone by Terry Harper, the length of the ice, Magnuson slowly skates down to the near corner of the Hawks own and it's a touching, it's an icing call against Montreal.
- 1:23:39So the Hawks will maintain good ice position with a face off in the Canadian zone to the right of Ken Dryton.
- 1:23:45And again we would expect to see Chico Mackey and Pete Mohamedich, the combatants, fall a face off.
- 1:23:51That's where they are.
- 1:23:53And the draw to Jarrett. Jarrett a quick shot, an easy save for Dryton. He drops it off to Laferriere, goes behind the net, checked by Corl from the rear.
- 1:24:01He throws it off the far board and the Canadians come back out to center ice, Ferguson overskates the puck, went back to the center line and Pete Mohamedich over the Hawks blue line, solid check by Jarrett, loose puck, picked up by Corl and Corl is checking the airboard.
- 1:24:12Ferguson loses control as Magnuson throws a shot into him and John Ashley is going to call a penalty against Chicago's Magnuson.
- 1:24:21We'll be back with more in a moment.
- 1:24:25Offside pass on the play.
- 1:24:29There's going to be a penalty against the Montreal Canadiens. A hooking call.
- 1:24:34Again looks like J.C. Trombley.
- 1:24:37So that equalizes the Hawks penalty.
- 1:24:40Montreal penalty number three, J.C. Trombley.
- 1:24:47Two minutes for a hooking call at 13.07.
- 1:24:53So Magnuson went in at 12.32 after he serves that penalty the Blackhawks will move to power play hockey.
- 1:25:00We'll have a 35 second advantage when Magnuson comes back on the ice.
- 1:25:04He plates off the outside of the Blackhawks blue line and Tony's really looking tired down there.
- 1:25:08Boy, he's got that arm resting on that crossbar.
- 1:25:11And it's hot down there and you know, the goalie loses about eight or ten pounds a game and that equipment he has on weighs about 60 pounds and by the end of the game it feels like a hundred and one pounds.
- 1:25:22Well, I certainly don't envy him and I especially did not envy Esposito or Ken Dryden in advance of this game.
- 1:25:31They had to have some terrific butterflies moving into the big game against each other.
- 1:25:36The game that is led now by the Chicago Blackhawks two to nothing.
- 1:25:40Possession to the Canadiens. LePerrier throwing it out the center ice.
- 1:25:43LaPointe's returned to the near board.
- 1:25:45Under lead, LaMaire has to retreat.
- 1:25:47Gives to LaPointe on the far side at the Canadian blue line.
- 1:25:50Moving toward the near boards.
- 1:25:52LaPointe being forechecked by Martin.
- 1:25:53LaPointe carries over the center line.
- 1:25:55Carries over the Hawks blue line on the right wing.
- 1:25:57And the puck is still free.
- 1:25:58Now picked up by Bill White.
- 1:26:00And Bill White throws it behind the net into the near corner.
- 1:26:02DeFappen can't hold it.
- 1:26:03LaMaire leads it over into the slot.
- 1:26:05Popped up into the air.
- 1:26:06And Doug Jarrett just dumps it out the center ice and it slides down into the Canadian zone.
- 1:26:13Forty-five seconds left on the penalty to Magnuson.
- 1:26:16As the Canadiens come back.
- 1:26:17Aubrey Richard carries to the far point, leading it back to the blue line.
- 1:26:20Kept in by LePerrier.
- 1:26:21He apparently did not keep it in.
- 1:26:23He brought it back in for an offside play.
- 1:26:27One-fifteen left on the penalty to Trombley.
- 1:26:31And about forty seconds left on the penalty to Keith Magnuson.
- 1:26:39Telly Ray putting out Lou Angati as you hear the sounds like booze, but it's really loose.
- 1:26:44Along with Eric Nestorico.
- 1:26:48Face-off outside the Hawk Blue Line on the near side of the rink.
- 1:26:50Aubrey Richard and Lou Angati.
- 1:26:52And now Billy Ray is bringing Pat Stapleton back on the ice for Doug Jarrett.
- 1:26:58So you have Angati, Nestorico, Stapleton and Bill White for Chicago.
- 1:27:02Angati and Richard ready for the face-off to draw one by Angati.
- 1:27:05Back to Bill White in the Hawk Zone.
- 1:27:07Bill White wheels around being checked by Richard.
- 1:27:09Throws it to the far side.
- 1:27:11And off the far board Lou Angati starts skating it out.
- 1:27:13Foked away but it comes right back to him.
- 1:27:15Out to the center line.
- 1:27:16Angati moving on the left wing over the Blue Line.
- 1:27:18He dumps it down into the Canadian Zone and takes forward.
- 1:27:20It's off the back board and taken into the near corner to LaMare.
- 1:27:23And LaMare carries it out.
- 1:27:25Moving down the near side of the rink.
- 1:27:27He skates to the Blue Line.
- 1:27:28To the center line LaMare winding a long shot and a goal.
- 1:27:33Chuck LaMare from about ten feet outside the Chicago Black Hawk Blue Line.
- 1:27:40Wound up and he hit a sizzling flat shot that went by Tony Esposito.
- 1:27:45And the score is now Chicago 2 and Montreal 1.
- 1:27:53Well we've seen it before Harvey and I guess we'll see it again.
- 1:27:56But that was some kind of a shot by LaMare.
- 1:27:58It was a blitz rink shot which he fired just outside the Blue Line.
- 1:28:01It went up over the shoulder of Tony in the right hand side of an S.
- 1:28:05A real fine shot at handcuffed Tony.
- 1:28:07He might have been partially screened as one of the Hawks' defensemen was backing up on the play.
- 1:28:11And might have lost sight of it for a second.
- 1:28:13And that split second was up and into the net.
- 1:28:15And it's almost a brand new hockey game.
- 1:28:195, Chuck LaMare.
- 1:28:21Chuck LaMare's goal.
- 1:28:23Assistant by number 2, Chuck LaFerriere.
- 1:28:25LaFerriere assisting.
- 1:28:26At 14, 18.
- 1:28:28At 14, 18.
- 1:28:32And that's LaMare's ninth goal in the playoff series this year.
- 1:28:37And the faceoff at center line.
- 1:28:39The drawback into the Canadian zone.
- 1:28:40From the near side of the far side and Harper at the center line.
- 1:28:43The Hawks' blue line on the right wing.
- 1:28:44Harper carrying in deeper.
- 1:28:45Throws it around the corner into the near corner.
- 1:28:47Emma Hobbitch centers but is taken away by Makita.
- 1:28:50Makita.
- 1:28:51Now the Blackhawks with power play hockey.
- 1:28:52Magnuson back on the ice.
- 1:28:54Power play hockey for 30 seconds.
- 1:28:55Dennis Hall around on the left wing.
- 1:28:57And the whistle blows for an offside play.
- 1:29:01So J.C. Trombley who went for hooking at 13, 07.
- 1:29:04Gives the Blackhawks the power play opportunity now.
- 1:29:07The Montreal Canadiens moving back into contention in this game.
- 1:29:11Trailing now by a score of 2 to 1.
- 1:29:13Thanks to the long center ice slap shot by LaMare.
- 1:29:16That got by Esposito at 14, 18.
- 1:29:19And missed the second period.
- 1:29:24Makita, Dennis Hall, Cliff Corral.

- 1:29:31Pete Mahavlach on the ice to face off with Makita just outside the
- 1:29:34Canadian blue line on the far side of the rink to draw one to the Blackhawks.

- 1:30:44But the Canadiens came back at 14-18 on a long shot by LeMaire assisted by LaFerriere to get on the scoreboard.
- 1:30:51That's the importance of checking those Canadiens especially as they break towards the Blackhawk blue line.
- 1:30:59But LeMaire caught the hawk defense just a little off guard as he let that shot fly from outside the blue line.
- 1:31:04From the faceoff a quick shot by Dennis Hall and a save by Dryden as he poked into the far corner.
- 1:31:09Bellable leads it to J.C. Trombley.

- 1:31:50That goal giving the Canadians new life.
- 1:31:53Knocking the Hawks lead down in half.

- 1:31:58We dominated play mostly in the second period.
- 1:32:00Outside the first five minutes when we were men short.
- 1:32:03Good ice position for Chicago.

- 1:41:00Canadians getting both their goals while each team had a man in a Bentley box, four skaters out in front of the goalkeeper and that bounce off the backboard really hurt, let's hope we can bounce back Lloyd, it's still anybody's hockey game, it's 2 all.
- 1:41:13We had the two goal lead and we saw it dissipate here in the second period.
- 1:41:17Jarrett and Ferguson still in the Bentley box when Jarrett comes out at 1954 it will be power play hockey for the Chicago Blackhawks and unless they score within those six seconds that power play opportunity will carry into the third period.

- 1:43:50And in order to do that we drop back into the first period at 19-12 when the Blackhawks took the lead.
- 1:43:5655 seconds left to go in the period, Torrell in the blue line back to Bobby Hall another slap shot and it's wide and it's Hull a shot and a goal.
- 1:44:22So the brothers Hull come by. Bobby Hall got the shot away from the far side and a fine save was made.
- 1:44:29Armapod of Ken Dryden but it deflected off to the left wing. Dennis Hall was there.
- 1:44:34He took that powerful shot of his. He swept it at the Chicago Montreal net.
- 1:44:39It looked like it may have been deflected off the defense line but Dennis Hall I believe will be credited with a goal and most important of all the Blackhawks have the first goal and the lead 1-0.
- 1:44:50And that's the way it was at the end of the first period, 1-0 in favor of the Chicago Blackhawks and at 5.30 of the second period Tony Esposito kept the Canadians off the board.
- 1:45:01To the air point the point, to the far point of J.C. Trombley back to the air point again and Gila Point.
- 1:45:06His shot right out in front of back and around the play by Esposito as he spun around and deflected the puck from right in front as Jacques Lenaire had a great opportunity but Esposito beat him.
- 1:45:17That play continued right up to this time then when Danny O'Shea came up with a beauty for Chicago.
- 1:45:24O'Shea loses control of the puck and goes to the far board. Here's Jarom with a turnaround shot deflected to the backboard on the left side. O'Shea, shot and goal!
- 1:45:53So Danny O'Shea got a second chance on a fine centering pass from the backboard by Pip Muckles.
- 1:46:01On to the stick of O'Shea, he shot once and came right back to it and he shot again and it just skidded along the ice and hit the lower right hand corner of the net.
- 1:46:09And the Blackhawks lead the Montreal Canadiens by a score of 2-0.
- 1:46:15And that continued until 14-18 of the second period and then came the big surprise, a long bomb from center ice that beat Esposito.
- 1:46:25Lenaire carries it out. Moving down Lenaire's side of the rink, he skates to the blue line of the center line. Lenaire winding a long shot and a goal!
- 1:46:34Chuck Lemaire from about 10 feet outside the Chicago Blackhawk blue line wound up and he hit a sizzling flat shot that went by Tony Esposito and the score is now Chicago 2 and Montreal 1.
- 1:46:52And the Canadiens continued to fight back trailing by one goal. They moved into a tie with the Blackhawks at 18-20 of period number two.
- 1:47:01And now to the Blackhawks, Nestorenko being checked by Lenaire. Nestorenko throws it behind the net. It's off the side of the gate, but in front a shot and a goal!
- 1:47:11Lenaire got that puck as it deflected off the side of the net and he threw it to Holly Richard who was wide open in front of the net.
- 1:47:18Richard poked it past Esposito and this hockey game is all tied up to the two.
- 1:47:24And that's where we stand as our second intermission continues at Chicago Stadium. Lloyd Pennant reporting along with Harvey Wittenberg.
- 1:47:32WMAQ 670, Chicago Stadium, 2-2 at the end of two. We'll be back to talk about tonight's game with Harvey right after this word.
- 1:47:42Well Harvey, with the Canadiens coming back to tie it up 2-2, their heads have got to be up. They've got to be a later to anticipating the third period.
- 1:47:50And I'm sure the Chicago Blackhawks will recognize that they too can jump out in front and take the lead. So right at this moment it's anybody's hockey game. It should be some third period.
- 1:48:00It should be a whale of a third period, Lloyd. It kind of reminds us a little bit of the New York Ranger game, the seventh in the siting game here at the stadium.
- 1:48:08Where we took the lead, the Rangers tied it on, I don't want to say a fluky type goal, but an error, a funny bounce to the puck.
- 1:48:17And then in the last period the Hawks came on to win, so we certainly hope they'll prevail here when we start the second period.
- 1:48:22Ferguson of the Canadiens have 11 seconds remaining to serve in a minor penalty, but just a couple of bad bounces, that long shot.
- 1:48:28And you know, Tony hasn't been beaten on more than two or three shots and like that all season.
- 1:48:33It took a little dip on him, and I think he was just partially screened for a moment. He lost sight of the puck and went over his shoulder in the right hand corner of the net.
- 1:48:40We had some opportunities earlier in the period when we had a 2-0 lead with Cliff, Carl, and Mackay on a 2-1 breakaway.
- 1:48:46And before O'Shea got his goal, he had bounced it off the post.
- 1:48:50So so far it's been two kind of breaks for the Canadiens to get their two goals, but we've worked a little harder on our two, so we can keep working hard in that third period and keep the pressure on.
- 1:49:04You know, but here's the whole season boiled down to one period of hockey now. It's 2-2, it's anybody's hockey game, and it shows you how great these two hockey clubs are.
- 1:49:13Well, I was most amazed, I believe you recall, in reporting that long shot by LaMare.
- 1:49:19Tony Esposito came out of the net a little bit, and he appeared to move his glove up just at the last section, at the last second, Harvey.
- 1:49:27And I suppose after this game is over, we'll find out from Tony that maybe just for the split second he may have lost sight of it.
- 1:49:34And of course, with that kind of a sizzling slap shot off the stick of LaMare, if you lose sight of it for one second, you're in trouble.
- 1:49:40I think we also will find out after this game is over that Eric Nesterreko, being checked by LaMare and the Chicago Blackhawks own,
- 1:49:47had control of the puck, and then LaMare, rather Nesterreko, in trying to center that puck, around center it, throw it behind the net,
- 1:49:56it bounced off it a little bit strange, came off the side of the cage right onto the stick of LaMare, and he flipped it to Richard.
- 1:50:02He was wide open in front of the cage.
- 1:50:04So as we say, these are the kind of moves that can win a game for you, these are the kind of moves that can lose a game for you.
- 1:50:11Well, it's just a matter of the Hawks are going to have to work in that last period, and really come out and try to take control.
- 1:50:19And both teams are going to be waiting for an opportunity, and they'll be a little cautious because you don't want to open yourself up to a mistake
- 1:50:26and give the other team an advantage.
- 1:50:28And the Blackhawks, speaking of an advantage, will have one right at the start of the third period, right, Harvey?
- 1:50:33For 11 seconds Ferguson will serve and is holding penalty.
- 1:50:38The Canadians power play, the Hawks have been able to bottle them up, but just when each team has had a man in a penalty box,
- 1:50:44and one man short on the ice, the Canadians have gotten both of their goals.
- 1:50:48Well, the Blackhawks in that second period were penalized five times, while the Montreal Canadians were penalized three times.
- 1:50:59And it's pretty tough to not only maintain a lead under those circumstances, but it's difficult to score those short-handed goals.
- 1:51:07So as far as the penalty category in the second period is concerned, it went definitely to the Montreal Canadians.
- 1:51:14The goaltenders, Tony Esposito, especially, I believe, Harvey, and we've made this observation,
- 1:51:19Tony Esposito, when he has the chance to rest, really rests.
- 1:51:23He hangs that head down, it looks like Tony might be pretty well beat by now.
- 1:51:27He's gone all the way for the Blackhawks, and that's some kind of a requirement.
- 1:51:31Well, the pressure's on. We just have a backup goalie, Ken Brown, who has only played a part of one period in the NHL.
- 1:51:38And, you know, we have to say Ken Dryden, a rookie, who's come in here in his first year and played the last six games of the regular season,
- 1:51:46and gone right through and played 20 Stanley Cup games, set a new record for most minutes played by a goal center in any one playoff year.
- 1:51:54And he's done a great job for Montreal.
- 1:51:57And once again, we have a situation with the score tied going into the third period,
- 1:52:02where the two coaches for these two teams, again, must make a decision on whatever advice they give to their players.
- 1:52:09And would that advice, again, be moving into a cautious situation and taking the break when you get the chance?
- 1:52:15Well, I would think so. You can't afford to make a mistake here, especially now when the score is tied,
- 1:52:21and 20 minutes of hockey and regulation time remaining.
- 1:52:25You've got to be very careful. You've got to pick your opportunities.
- 1:52:28And if the Hawks continue their strong core checking, keep moving that puck around, and keep controlling that puck, I think we can come out on top.
- 1:52:35Well, I'll tell you, there are an awful lot of fans here at Chicago Stadium who are looking forward to exactly that, Harvey.
- 1:52:41These are the fans that have been supporting the Chicago Blackhawks solidly throughout the year, and I'll tell you, they are some kind of people.
- 1:52:49They have supported this club throughout this year and for many, many years, and a lot of them that you and I both know,
- 1:52:56back in the days when things were not really going too well for the Chicago Blackhawks, supported them then.
- 1:53:01And I think that they are, by all means, to be afforded a congratulation for their support.
- 1:53:07Well, they've been behind us all the way, and I'm sure when the Hawks come out here in the third period,
- 1:53:12they're once again going to rise their feet and give the Hawks a standing ovation.
- 1:53:16All right, we've been talking with Harvey Wittenberg here at the second edition at Chicago Stadium
- 1:53:21with the Blackhawks and the Montreal Canadiens all tied up 2-2 in game seven, the final game of the Stanley Cup competition for 1971.
- 1:53:29And we'll be back with the start of the third period for you right after this.
- 1:53:36So an interesting third period of hockey coming up to Sabley's.
- 1:53:40The whistle has been blown, and we will have the faceoff at center-ice shortly as soon as those not actually involved in play head to the bench.
- 1:53:48And the in-hospital, John Ferguson of Montreal, has 11 seconds remaining on his holding penalty carryover from the second period.
- 1:53:59So Makita will be on the ice for Chicago along with Dennis Hall, Eric Nestorenko, Bill White, and Pat Stapledon.
- 1:54:07Makita, when the faceoff is ready, will be facing Pete Mahamalich.
- 1:54:13Frank Mahamalich on the left wing, Key LaPointe.
- 1:54:16One of the defensemen and the other defenseman is Jacques Leferrière, penalty-killing team for the Canadiens.
- 1:54:22The Canadiens moving from left to right, Chicago of course in the other direction in the opening faceoff of the third period.
- 1:54:26One by the Canadiens, LaPointe, tups it down to the Hawk zone.
- 1:54:29Around the near corner, behind the Hawk, that's Bill White off the stick of Esposito, gives to the near side and Stapledon.
- 1:54:34Stapledon ahead to Dennis Hall.
- 1:54:35Dennis Hall to Makita, Makita to the blue line, Makita into the slot.
- 1:54:38His shot deflected by LaPeriere and somebody has the souvenir.
- 1:54:41And the penalty to Ferguson is over.
- 1:54:49Just underway with the third period.
- 1:54:51Hawks will have good ice position for the upcoming faceoff in the Canadian zone, almost in the slot position.
- 1:54:56It'll be Stan Makita facing off against the Canadian captain, Sean Benobo.
- 1:55:03Waiting for John to make over lines for the drop to puck and the faceoff.
- 1:55:06The draw goes to the backboard of the Canadian zone, LaPeriere carries it to the far corner.
- 1:55:10Leaves it ahead to Benobo, Benobo skating it out to Satterice at the center line, dumps it into the Hawk zone.
- 1:55:15Poked out by Dennis Hall, a bouncing puck out of the stick of Nestorenko into the far corner and Nestorenko dumps it out to Satterice to LaPeriere.
- 1:55:20LaPeriere flipping it back into the Hawk zone, around the near corner, Whitey Stapledon has it on his stick and he moves behind Manette.
- 1:55:26Coming out of the right side, gives to Bill White.
- 1:55:28Bill White at the Hawk blue line, carrying it out to the center line.
- 1:55:30Bill White to the blue line and almost collides with one of his own teammates.
- 1:55:33Bill White trying to center, deflecting away, here's Dennis Hall with a shot, broken up and on the rebound.
- 1:55:37He pokes it to the backboard but it's picked up by LaPeriere.
- 1:55:40Dennis Hall's shot was broken by Harper and off the near board of the Canadian zone, brought out to Satterice.
- 1:55:45Stapledon intercepting and giving to Dennis Hall on the left wing at Satterice.
- 1:55:49Dennis Hall couldn't find the puck and it's picked up by Harper and dumped back into the Hawk zone.
- 1:55:53Stapledon to the far side and Bill White.
- 1:55:55Bill White's lead deflected to Nestorenko, poked away from him.
- 1:55:58Now Bellobone in his own zone, moving toward the near board.
- 1:56:01Ding-4 checked by Makita.
- 1:56:02Bellobone leads it out to Satterice to the far board and back into the Hawk zone and Bill White.
- 1:56:06Bill White is there for Chicago.
- 1:56:08Ivo's behind Manette and comes out on the left side.
- 1:56:10The staple and on the near side of the Hawk zone.
- 1:56:12He's out to the blue line, his pass broken up by Frank Mahalich.
- 1:56:14His pass in turn intercepted by Bill White on the near side at Satterice.
- 1:56:17Letterhead to Dennis Hall but under his stick and all the way down to the Canadian zone.
- 1:56:21Touch there by Guy LaPointe.
- 1:56:23It's an icing call against Chicago.
- 1:56:25Bill White, the puck, will return to the Chicago zone.
- 1:56:28You can't afford a big star because a full-size Pontiac is only $57 more than America's most popular lightweight star.
- 1:56:38Minutes and 36 going by here in the third period.
- 1:56:41It's all tied up two and two.
- 1:56:45And they're still having trouble with that rough spot on the ice in the Chicago zone.
- 1:56:49In the face-off circle off to the right of Tony Esposito.
- 1:56:54And Ashley is scraping some shavings into the hole for the escape as it's being smoothed down by John Benico.
- 1:57:05Body haul, Chico Mackie, Cliff Corral, Keith Micerson, and Doug Jarrett on the ice for Chicago.
- 1:57:11As the crowd here at Chicago Stadium comes alive, urging the Blackhawks on to see if they can win their first Stanley Cup championship in 10 years.
- 1:57:20Face-off to the left of Esposito, the draw.
- 1:57:22Back to Jarrett. Jarrett in the near corner off the near board, poked at by Bobby Hall.
- 1:57:25J.C. Trombley leaning in front, popped up into the air, went off the side of the cage, the shot by Hull.
- 1:57:29Another shot in the same line. Esposito as he beat Ferguson from short range.
- 1:57:33And Bobby Hall off to center line, through this control of the puck as he was checked from the rear.
- 1:57:37And the puck in the Canadian zone picked up by J.C. Trombley.
- 1:57:40Trombley to the center line, led into the Hawks' zone around the near corner.
- 1:57:43It hits something there and it stops dead.
- 1:57:45Bobby Hall can't hold it off the near board. Led to Pete Mahabalich.
- 1:57:47He can't hold it as the puck is picked up by Corral.
- 1:57:49Out to center ice and Chico Mackey. Chico Mackey leading the body.
- 1:57:52It's off the skeet of Hull and dumped back to center ice and Magnuson.
- 1:57:55To the near side and Jarrett. Jarrett back to the blue line and Bobby Hall.
- 1:57:58Bobby Hall a wrist shot and broken up. Another quick shot and tried to chip in with Chico Mackey.
- 1:58:02And it went by to the left side and poked into the near corner.
- 1:58:06Still in the Canadian zone. Dumped out to the Canadian blue line to Rayshard Hull.
- 1:58:10Leading to Aubrey Richard on the left wing. Aubrey Richard coming on in front.
- 1:58:13A shot and a goal!
- 1:58:15Aubrey Richard was wide open at the Hawks blue line.
- 1:58:20He came in on the left wing. Passed Magnuson.
- 1:58:22He moved in front of the net after drawing Esposito over and he poked it home.
- 1:58:26And the Montreal Canadiens have the lead over the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2.
- 1:58:39And it's a quiet crowd at Chicago Stadium.
- 1:58:42They're down the right this moment as it well must be.
- 1:58:45But these Blackhawks have been behind in a game before.
- 1:58:48And they could come back.
- 1:58:50Canadiens 3, the Blackhawks 2.
- 1:58:52Face off at center ice. The draw back into the Hawks zone.
- 1:58:55Onto the stick of Esposito. Turned over to Bill White. Bill White behind the net.
- 1:58:58Bill White looking out. Throwing it out to Martin. Martin tips it ahead to Tappen.
- 1:59:02Out to center ice. Along the far board. Tappen winding a slack shot wide on the right side.
- 1:59:05And off the near board. Picked up by O'Shea. A shot! Broken up! Poked at by Martin.
- 1:59:10Back into the stick of O'Ri-Richard. And he dumps it out to center ice.
- 1:59:13And on the near side, Stapleton retreating into the Hawks zone to the far side.
- 1:59:16And Bill White led to center ice. O'Ri-Richard intercepts again.
- 1:59:19And dumps it to the hot blue line. Here's LaVere with a shot and a save by Esposito.
- 1:59:24A fine save by Tony Esposito.
- 1:59:27And now here's the official announcement on the goal.
- 1:59:30O'Ri-Richard, his second goal of the game.
- 1:59:33Full assisting. LaPoint assisting.
- 1:59:372-34. That's 2-34.
- 1:59:42On that goal, Lloyd, O'Ri-Richard was just coming off the bench fresh as the Canadians changed on the fly.
- 1:59:48And Keith Magnuson was back on the fence. Didn't see O'Ri-Richard as he got that perfect pass.
- 1:59:52And being fresh off the bench, he came in with a full head of steam. And on Tony Esposito.
- 1:59:56Face off to the right of Esposito. The draw won by no one at the moment.
- 1:59:59Now taken by the Canadians. Quick shot turned aside by Esposito.
- 2:00:02That was off the stick of LaRose. Into the far corner it goes.
- 2:00:05Looking for it, Phil White takes it off. Pappen can't clear it. Back to Harper.
- 2:00:08Harper's shot partially deflected. Taken by Stapleton. Off the near board.
- 2:00:11That poke that. Out the center ice. Taken by O'Ri-Richard.
- 2:00:14Off the near board. Dubs it in over Hawke's Zone and Stapleton. Stapleton to Martin.
- 2:00:17Martin at the center line. Leading on the right wing and leading at 2-high.
- 2:00:20Intended for Jimmy Pappen. It goes over the board on the far side and up into the crowd.
- 2:00:27Millions of motorists rely on STP every day. At a can, you're oil and run smoother, cooler, quieter, longer.
- 2:00:32STP is the racer's edge.
- 2:00:34And we'll be back with more in just a moment.
- 2:00:37Face off at center ice. And a bouncing puck to Dennis Holley.
- 2:00:40Dubs it into the Canadian Zone on the interception of the point.
- 2:00:42Throws it out to center ice and led to the Hawke blue line.
- 2:00:44And coming out of Esposito.
- 2:00:46Squat up in the air off the stick of Gordon Wye.
- 2:00:48As the puck is poked to the far side and Nester Reiko.
- 2:00:50His pass intercepted by Pappen.
- 2:00:52Thrown back into the far corner of the Hawke's Zone.
- 2:00:54Into the near corner of Jarrett.
- 2:00:55Jarrett ahead to Dennis Holley on the near board.
- 2:00:57Leads to Makita at the center line. Makita to the blue line.
- 2:00:59Makita moving into the slot right wing. Nester Reiko is shot.
- 2:01:02And it's high and wide to the right side.
- 2:01:04And off the near board.
- 2:01:05A great opportunity for the Hawks and Nester Reiko.
- 2:01:07Dubs back into the Canadian Zone and it's an offside play.
- 2:01:14Once again, Dan Makita at a perfect speed.
- 2:01:16Jarrett and Jarrett trying for the upper corner.
- 2:01:18Fired over the top of the net.
- 2:01:20As he was sailing in on the right side.
- 2:01:22Four minutes and five seconds into the third period.
- 2:01:25Three to two in favor of the Canadians.
- 2:01:27They've scored three straight goals from the second period on.
- 2:01:30LeMare, Richard and Richard.
- 2:01:33Center ice play for Jarrett. Dubs it into the Canadian Zone.
- 2:01:35Knocked down by Trombley.
- 2:01:36And Trombley goes behind the net coming out on the left side.
- 2:01:39Leads to Belebo. Belebo up the far side.
- 2:01:41Out to Center ice.
- 2:01:42In the center line to Frank Mahomenich.
- 2:01:43Mahomenich over the Hawke's Blue line.
- 2:01:44Moving into the slot. His shot broken up by Jarrett.
- 2:01:46Jarrett plays it back out to Center ice.
- 2:01:48Poked at by Makita.
- 2:01:49And swatted that off the near board.
- 2:01:51But picked up by Cornway.
- 2:01:52Swept away by Doug Jarrett.
- 2:01:53Out to Center ice.
- 2:01:54Far board and Nester Reiko.
- 2:01:55He swats at it.
- 2:01:56But cannot get it into the Canadian Zone.
- 2:01:58Now it's deflected down to the Canadian Zone.
- 2:02:00Deflected out to Center ice.
- 2:02:01And Cornway off the near side.
- 2:02:03And dumped out to Center ice.
- 2:02:04Off the stick.
- 2:02:05Abdullable into the Hawke's Zone.
- 2:02:06And picked up by Magnuson.
- 2:02:07Magnuson skating it right straight out.
- 2:02:09Leads on the left wing to Dennis Holl of Center ice.
- 2:02:11To Nester Reiko on the right wing.
- 2:02:12And poked down to the Canadian Zone.
- 2:02:13Intersending is LePeriere.
- 2:02:15Into the near corner.
- 2:02:16LePeriere receives a solid check from Nester Reiko.
- 2:02:18With the loose puck taken by Hull.
- 2:02:19Moves out on the left side.
- 2:02:20A throw to Pete Mahomenich.
- 2:02:21Down the far board.
- 2:02:22Out to Center ice.
- 2:02:23To the Hawke's Blue line.
- 2:02:24Pete Mahomenich trying to break through.
- 2:02:25He can't get by Magnuson.
- 2:02:28Stapler has the puck.
- 2:02:29But it's stolen away from him by Hull.
- 2:02:30And Hull takes the shot.
- 2:02:31But it goes behind the net.
- 2:02:32Comes off out of the near board.
- 2:02:33Still in the Hawke's Zone.
- 2:02:34Fought for by Bobby Hall.
- 2:02:35And the whistle blows.
- 2:02:36Will have a face off in the Chicago Zone.
- 2:02:37As Bobby Hall and Pete Mahomenich give each other a couple of unkind stares.
- 2:02:38Chico Mackey getting some equipment affairs over by the Blackhawk bench.
- 2:02:39And looks like Fitt Martin will take Chico's place on the line here.
- 2:02:58Five minutes, 18 seconds going by here.
- 2:03:03In period number three we're down three to two.
- 2:03:06And the Hawke's Blue line is out to the right side.
- 2:03:10Hull has the ice to face off with Pete Mahomenich to the left of Tony Esposito.
- 2:03:12And the draw.
- 2:03:13Back into the near corner of the Hawke's Zone.
- 2:03:14Taken by Stapleton.
- 2:03:15Stapleton moving behind Bannett.
- 2:03:16And out of the right side.
- 2:03:17Continues to carry.
- 2:03:18Stapleton moving it out of the Hawke's Zone.
- 2:03:19Leaves the coral at the center line of Bobby Hall.
- 2:03:20Over the Blue line of Bobby Hall.
- 2:03:21The left wing.
- 2:03:22His shot partially deflected.
- 2:03:23He got it started.
- 2:03:24And we have a penalty coming up.
