- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering one piece
- 0:11episodes five thirty nine, five forty and five forty one. The Haunting Ties
- 0:17Nami and the Fishman pirates, a hero who free the slaves, an adventurer
- 0:23Tiger, and Kisaru appears a trap to catch Tiger. In these episodes,
- 0:31we take a trip down memory lane to remind us exactly how awful life was
- 0:36with Ourlong, and then we get the story of what was going on with
- 0:41Jimbay and the other fishmen who had decided to start taking matters into their own
- 0:46hands. Welcome to spoil Me, Welcome to the show everyone. I am
- 1:10Natasha. Thank you very much to Florian for commissioning this episode. This was
- 1:18such a weird ride, you guys, because like part of me was very
- 1:23on board for a lot of it, and I was very interested in after
- 1:26all of this, like talk about the way that fishmen are treated being done
- 1:32in this very vague way with Arlong when we first met him, then seeing
- 1:36like the realities of that Sabaodi and how much like how much more brutal even
- 1:42than I was expecting it turned out to be, even despite having seen all
- 1:51of this. I didn't see it coming that Nami was kind of just going
- 1:56to be like, you know what, it's fucked up that you released our
- 2:00and I did go through hell, but also I've seen some shit that makes
- 2:05me understand where he was coming from a little bit more, and it's like
- 2:09colored not. It hasn't pardoned him, of course, because he definitely took
- 2:14shit too far and even his own cohorts felt that way at the time.
- 2:20But she is basically like the realities of what you guys were going through and
- 2:28why you felt like you needed support, It kind of makes sense to me
- 2:35why you took the steps you did. I was very gratified by that.
- 2:39But when I tell you guys this now, it makes it sound like this
- 2:46conversation happens right away. And this is probably like one of the more aggressively
- 2:57frustrating like payoffs, because the last episode, like the final episode of the
- 3:04last section that I covered, ends with Nami finding out that Jimbei had freed
- 3:10our along. He confesses that in front of all of them, and thus,
- 3:16I'm thinking we're going to start this one off with the explanation as to
- 3:23why, and that's not how it goes at all we have, Like,
- 3:29first of all, Robin, She's walking through the forest looking around and saying
- 3:36to herself like, I'm sure if I keep going that I'm going to find
- 3:39something, and eventually her eyes just light up and she's like there, but
- 3:46we don't really get to see what it is. I know that she's looking
- 3:51for one of the ponoglyphs, but it's uh, I have lost track at
- 3:55this point, Guys, what the ponoglyphs like, what their significance is meant
- 4:01to be for her? And I think that part of the reason that I've
- 4:04lost track of it is because I'm just not that interested in it, you
- 4:11know. It's the sort of thing where I have to be reminded because Robin
- 4:16is just not a character that I think about that often. She has such
- 4:21a cool power, and I feel like she could be such an interesting character
- 4:27if she were just I don't know if it's like the voice actor or if
- 4:30it is just the way she's written, but I think it's weird how Robin
- 4:35has all of the components to a character that I would like without really being
- 4:41a character that I like that much, if that makes sense. So then
- 4:47we go jump from Robin to all of the guards who are fleeing the palace
- 4:54at the orders of the king, and his two dudes are very, very
- 4:59like cut up over the fact that they took his orders and they feel as
- 5:06if they have let him down. And I know that he did tell them
- 5:14to leave, and I think that they did the right thing, but I
- 5:16can't help but feel like if I were them, I would also be sort
- 5:20of There's always this feeling when you're looking back on things, like there had
- 5:27to be something I could have done, and I don't like there clearly wasn't.
- 5:34They were out manned here, you know, But I felt for them.
- 5:40Once they're on the other side of things, out of the conflict,
- 5:44how maybe it does kind of feel like, why are we out here safe
- 5:47and our actual king is in there with these fucking people. The dude with
- 5:54the who looks like a seahorse, he's the one who's mostly we did our
- 6:00duty. We're going to handle this in time, but first we've got to
- 6:04contact the prince and his brothers find him as soon as you can. After
- 6:10that, we're gonna regroup and make our way back to the palace. And
- 6:16I kind of wanted to be like, I mean, you're gonna need more
- 6:20than just the brothers, right, I guess I don't really know what the
- 6:26brothers are capable of. So for me, just getting these three dudes and
- 6:30heading back to the palace like with the same forces that you fled with and
- 6:34plus like three random dudes doesn't sound to me like it's going to end up
- 6:41any better than it did the first time. But they may have some really
- 6:46cool abilities that make them extremely formidable. What I'm hoping for, of course,
- 6:50and I think where we're heading is that it's gonna be like, well,
- 6:55we'll find the princes, and in the midst of that search, we
- 6:58will also come across the the straw Hats and they will come back to the
- 7:03palace with us and help us deal with this whole thing, although we've got
- 7:09some of them still on site like already, so it says meanwhile in the
- 7:17high class district of Fishery Hills, and I keep forgetting them. My god,
- 7:25there's a bunch of people fleeing because the pirates are coming in and basically
- 7:30taking the place over. And they have a portrait of the queen. And
- 7:35we don't find out exactly what this is until later, but all we can
- 7:42see is the audience. At first, are just these pieces of wood with
- 7:46some kind of paper nailed to it, and it's being flung on the ground
- 7:54in front of like random citizens, and the pirates are saying step on it.
- 8:00You know, you have to step on it, because that is like
- 8:01the test to make sure that you have fully crossed over. Oh right,
- 8:09So this officer of the Fishman pirates Icarus, maybe it's Ikaros. I don't
- 8:20know if they even say it out loud on the show yet. Ikaros much
- 8:26is the way that it looks, but I'm not sure if it's pronounced that
- 8:31way. He is the one that's sort of like heading this group that's going
- 8:37into the Fishfly Hills and Candy Factory Town, which it's so funny how like
- 8:48Candy Factory Town is just the least imaginative name. They went with something very
- 8:52funny like Fishfly Hills, and then they just sort of decided, Eh,
- 8:56that's where we're going to have our fun, and the rest of it just
- 8:58make it as boring as possible. But we see all of these people who
- 9:03are being lined up to step on this portrait, and they are really taking
- 9:09it hard. Like I was assuming at first, that this was a picture
- 9:11of the prince or the king or whatever. And then eventually this woman says,
- 9:18I can't tread on her image. I beg that you understand, and
- 9:24I was like, oh, it's a woman. Is this a deity or
- 9:28something? And I mean, I guess kind of, depending on how much
- 9:33you believe in that aspect of alleged monarchy. Oh right, And this is
- 9:39where we meet Dharuma, who looks like one of those demons that's like guarding
- 9:43Buddha. I hope that I can remember these names. Ekeros is pretty easy
- 9:50to remember because it just sounds like he hears. But Dharuma, I don't
- 9:54know if I'm going to be able to hold this one in my brain.
- 9:56But he looks like way less human than any of the other fishmen have so
- 10:01far to me. And it says in front of fishmen culture hall is where
- 10:09everybody is gathered here and folks are we're finding out that like all over the
- 10:18place, it's being guaranteed, is like the only word I can think of,
- 10:22even though it's so objectively not a guarantee. What the pirates are trying
- 10:28to do is like establish who is willing to turn their back on their current
- 10:33monarchy, and a bunch of people who are resisting are being put down.
- 10:39We've got this drunk guy who's got the gourd full of liquor, and these
- 10:43dudes all say that they probably this one guy isn't so tough, we might
- 10:48be able to take him. And he throws his gourd towards them, slices
- 10:54it all into pieces. And I'll be honest, I thought when he did
- 10:58this, all he was doing was trying to kind of intimidate them that it
- 11:03was just meant to be, like, look at how fast I slice that
- 11:05gord up, and you barely even saw my sword move. So if I
- 11:11can do that to this, what do you think I can do to you?
- 11:15But no, it's he does that, and he slices up all of
- 11:18the men that are standing there at the same time. So he's a very
- 11:22much like if you make me repeat myself, that's the end of it.
- 11:26And he says, anyone who doesn't want to step on the picture is gonna
- 11:31get sliced up real good. Then we go to the shopping mall and there's
- 11:39a bunch of fishmen lined up there in this like sort of arcade in the
- 11:43middle of it, and they're like being told that basically, if you don't
- 11:54want to like live under our rule, then you're gonna have to leave.
- 11:58And one of the other fishmen's responding with, like, where are we supposed
- 12:03to go? Like, humans aren't gonna let us live out with them?
- 12:09This is the only place that gets light. Where do you expect us to
- 12:13go? And one of the pirates is like, you see what I'm saying.
- 12:20You are being asked to go anywhere but here, and you don't even
- 12:24know where you where to start because human beings are such shittheads that you can't
- 12:33even be like that. There's no life outside of just hiding on this island,
- 12:41which means really that you agree with us that trying to make common cause
- 12:48with the humans is a losing fucking battle. There's no way they can ever
- 12:52coexist peacefully. So your best bet is to accept the rule of Hordy.
- 13:00Under his reign will have the power to change history. And as he's saying
- 13:05this, and by he, I mean one of the pirates, you don't
- 13:11see who it is. The man he's talking to starts getting this red like
- 13:16mark around his neck and he's being lifted up bodily off the ground and the
- 13:24there's nothing there for a moment, and then finally there's this slow appearance of
- 13:31a shape, and then eventually we see the weird stripey guy who's apparently named
- 13:39Zeo, and his thing evidently is that he can like blend into the background,
- 13:46Like you know, there's a lot of different creatures that can do this,
- 13:50but that's a pretty I always find invisibility to be a really terrifying ability,
- 13:58like there there's I think that part of the reason why it affects me
- 14:03so deeply is because when I was like a teen, that fucking hollow Man
- 14:09movie with a with Kevin Bacon came out, which is, by the way,
- 14:15one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I was like,
- 14:20it was one of those movies that really makes you understand as a child that
- 14:24like even serious actors who are otherwise successful can still be in total schlock bullshit.
- 14:37And I didn't really like know that then, so I went thinking,
- 14:39oh, it's Kevin Bacon, like he's legit, and then it was just
- 14:43awful. And but one of the scariest scenes in it is a girl who's
- 14:50just in her bedroom getting ready and she's like naked in a robe or something
- 14:56and just you know, brushing her hair before or her mirror, and she
- 15:01doesn't know that this dude is standing like a foot behind her, and the
- 15:05scene cuts off just as he's clearly like going to assault her. But that
- 15:11scene just like kind of embedded itself in my brain. And so for me,
- 15:18invisibility has always been like it's it's like exactly what fucking Soanji had been
- 15:28saying before about how he wanted to be the creep that was his power.
- 15:31That he wanted was to be able to be invisible so that he could sneak
- 15:35and watch girls like I always saw invisibility as the power of somebody who wants
- 15:41to prey on other people, and probably women specifically. So I wonder how
- 15:48Sonji's gonna feel about this person, even though I don't know if it would
- 15:52technically count as invisibility, because I believe that what we'll find out is that
- 15:56this being has his like it's more of like a camouflage effect rather than true
- 16:02invisibility. Still it's apparently just as effective. So and then we've got another
- 16:12dude, Dosin is that his name, who has this like giant hammer Dosin
- 16:22is I think my favorite design out of all of these fishmen. You know,
- 16:27when we were with the Rlong Pirates, the duck Lips guy was just
- 16:32so like bonkers that he really won my heart, along with the fact that
- 16:37he looked like a backstreet boy. But Dosin has this fucking browridge that like
- 16:44caves downward and it he looks almost like a hammer head. I can't tell
- 16:55if that's like fully, because I think that's what we're doing with him having
- 16:59the hammer I think that's the joke, right, But oh, he's so
- 17:03cool looking and he's got this like real pale pink hair. It's sort of
- 17:07dope, I'm not gonna lie. So he swings down on this random citizen
- 17:15and tadah, the Prince shows up, which is funny because I was actually
- 17:18thinking that he kind of looked a little bit like the Prince. I think
- 17:22he's just it's the long, flowing pastel hair. And the Prince decks this
- 17:27dude and just comes upon him, saying, what is the meaning of this,
- 17:33U scum? How dare you? And then says forcing people to tread
- 17:40on the image of my late mother And we see finally the picture of this
- 17:48like very when you see her moving and in action, his mother doesn't look
- 18:00as stupid as she does in this picture. This picture looks like the brand
- 18:06mascot for like a baking mix or something. She's just that particular image for
- 18:14me almost made me laugh out loud because it just seemed so she looks like
- 18:19she's like twelve, you know. But anyway, we go through all of
- 18:27that before we finally go back to Loofy and oh my god, I don't
- 18:37even think we have yet. I'm looking at this. No, we have
- 18:41still like another conversation amongst all of the other people who saw the princess,
- 18:45and they are deciding what to do. They apparently think that probably Loofy is
- 18:52part of the pirates that are terrorizing everybody else, and that she only said
- 18:59that she would be like an home for dinner because she was forced to by
- 19:06them. And as they're all like talking about this and whether or not there's
- 19:11a link there, there's another old lady who comes running in and she says
- 19:15that there have been some other disappearances of mermaids, and this is something that
- 19:21all the townspeople are sort of like, if the straw Hats are in league
- 19:26with the other pirates on the island. That means that they're like teamed up
- 19:32with the fishmen, and if they're teamed up with them, they wouldn't sell
- 19:37mermaids, would they. That feels like that's completely antithetical to what they're doing,
- 19:44and as they're trying to puzzle through how this could be, we then
- 19:48go to wet Hair Caribou and he has just seen the giant princess mermaid and
- 19:56his assumption is if she's like so, if she's ten times the size of
- 20:02a normal mermaid and a normal one is worth seventy million, she is the
- 20:08mermaid mother load. I will be able to get so much for her.
- 20:14It's so funny to me, you guys, because there's no real like plan
- 20:22here. He just says, it's a mermaid mother load. Any way you
- 20:27slice it, I'll make a fortune. And then he sees like another mermaid
- 20:34who says who are you, and he goes, let me introduce myself and
- 20:37goes after her. Now I don't know exactly how he's thinking. He's going
- 20:45to be able to capture and hold Shira Hoshi and transport her back up to
- 20:53the surface where he can make money by selling her. I like, this
- 21:02mermaid is so enormous. The thing is, like, we know that shiro
- 21:08Hohi is such a cry baby and so gentle that even though she could like
- 21:12pick up a human being and just crush them in her bare hand, probably
- 21:18we know she wouldn't, right, That's just not who she is. However,
- 21:22he doesn't know that, and it just feels hilarious to me that he
- 21:26would ever even conceive of the fact that he could take her prisoner, because,
- 21:32sir, you would fit in her mouth, Like, what are you
- 21:36even thinking? Here? Oh, Seraphim is in the chat Hi Seraphim Dosin
- 21:41is a hammerhead shark fishman, and Zeo is a wobegong wobegong shark also called
- 21:48a carpet shark who are extremely skilled at camouflage a carpet shark. Interesting.
- 21:56Thank you for that, SARAHM. I never heard of that. I'm gonna
- 21:59look that up later. Okay. So here here is when we finally go
- 22:03back to the sea forest, and I couldn't believe y'all we did so much
- 22:08between that. I'm like, oh good, we're getting back to the sea
- 22:12forest and we're finally going to have the conversation about the giant bombshell that Jimbay
- 22:19just dropped. But no, instead we're dealing with like the princess crying and
- 22:26jim Bay comforting her, him like your father is tougher than you realize,
- 22:32and all of this like conversation is happening around it. There's it takes so
- 22:40so long to get back to the point I. He finally says, excuse
- 22:48me, I have a matter to discuss with Loofy and his crew, and
- 22:52I'm going, thank you, Jimbay. Yeah, this felt like something we
- 22:56really shouldn't have. We should have gotten right back to We get interrupted again
- 23:03by Sanji, who is dancing by with cups of tea for all of the
- 23:07ladies. He somehow managed to find a giant cup for the giant princess,
- 23:14which is I mean, that's just resourceful. I gotta give him props for
- 23:19that. He's like delivering all of this too with this very acrobatic style,
- 23:26and Namy's response she says, whatever, just leave it over there for right
- 23:29now and points, and she then says, you've bothered us enough already.
- 23:34We're having a serious talk and like considering everything. He interrupts it again.
- 23:42You're so sexy when you're stern with me, nommy, guys, we're having
- 23:52a conversation with somebody who's like indirectly responsible for her foster mother's death being in
- 24:00front of Nami's eyes, but we have to like watch Sangi cartwheel around first,
- 24:07Oh my god, and then finally Nami says, okay, Jim Bay,
- 24:15let's settle this. And the way this is written cracked me up.
- 24:21She says, tell me, what did you mean earlier? You said you
- 24:26set our long loose. The way that she phrases it sounds like this has
- 24:32been a good thirty minute interval. After he says like, I said him
- 24:37free, and then we just did other shit for a while, like framing
- 24:42it as earlier instead of her just being like, what did you mean.
- 24:48I know that it's supposed to be her just refreshing the audience, but it
- 24:52just there's no urgency to the conversation. And I was so certain that she
- 24:57was going to be and she clear like she's very sober in the way that
- 25:03she's speaking to him, so there is that gravity to it once we get
- 25:07started again, but god, it took so long to get back to the
- 25:11convo, and then it's being talked about as if this was like us picking
- 25:17up the next day almost so yeah, Jimbay like is about to tell and
- 25:26Hachi interrupts, and it's like, you know, don't he I think he?
- 25:32I can't remember if he says don't, I think he does. I'm
- 25:36gonna go back and look. Let's see he uh oh yeah, he says
- 25:40no, Jimbay wait, And then Sanji says, I heard the same thing
- 25:47a while back. When Lufy and I first learned about Jimbei of the Seven
- 25:51war Lords, Yosaku told us about the bargain that Jimbei struck. He is
- 25:57a war lord in exchange for becoming one of the seven Jimbay let a dangerous
- 26:03fishman run wild in the East Blue. I do not remember this character at
- 26:08all. Forgive me, guys. This didn't ring a bell. We even,
- 26:12like go have like a kind of flashback of this character, and I
- 26:22couldn't place them at all. I know that we must have met them,
- 26:30and this is like, you know, footage from Beck when it was animated
- 26:33the first time, But I totally do not recall. And I really felt
- 26:40like I must have missed an episode. I don't think I did, but
- 26:45you know, but yeah, and Lufy who apparently was there, does not
- 26:51remember. So Sanji continues on, saying, like two years ago, when
- 26:59I read about you associating with Jimby in the newspaper, I honestly didn't know
- 27:04what to think about it. I thought Jimbay had been the key figure pulling
- 27:11our long strings and telling him what to do. So Jimby, I'll give
- 27:17you a chance to defend what happened, but choose your words wisely. After
- 27:22all, our very own navigator here had her entire life ruined thanks to your
- 27:27buddy Arlong put it simply, whatever you did turned her world into a living
- 27:36hell. And while I appreciate Sanji trying to like handle this back up dude,
- 27:49like this isn't your you know, it's just very frustrating for a dude
- 27:55to insert himself into things when this has nothing to do with you. You
- 27:59weren't even like part of stuff, you know, like he was part of
- 28:06the battle, but he wasn't part or was he He was there, right,
- 28:10but he wasn't like living on the island, and he didn't he doesn't
- 28:15know what it was like for Nami, And I just really wanted to tell
- 28:19him to, like, let Nami have this moment because saying choose your words
- 28:25wisely, it's like, very much, I'm going to do something to you
- 28:30if you say things wrong, and she didn't ask you to do that,
- 28:34and you didn't consult with her on how she wanted this handled or how she
- 28:37was feeling about any of it. So I was I understand that it's supposed
- 28:42to be him sort of having her back, but because everything with Sanji has
- 28:48felt very sour to me, with this arc and the way that he's being
- 28:52written, it just really rubbed me the wrong way because it pairs up with
- 28:56him being having a certain attitude towards women in general that I'm very tired of
- 29:03at this point, and he says something like I won't I might not forgive
- 29:08you, and I was like, who's asking for your forgiveness? This has
- 29:11just nothing to do with you, man, Like, get the fuck out
- 29:14of here. So Hachi sits up and he says, he's right, we
- 29:23caused her so much grief. It's horrible, and all the apologizing in the
- 29:29world won't change a thing. Jim Bay's face here seems truly stunned, and
- 29:37I thought when he was like telling them all of this that he was aware
- 29:42of the backstory with Nami, but the way that he reacts when Sanji tells
- 29:48him this makes me think that he actually only knew that Lufi took care of
- 29:53Ourlong and didn't realize that Nami had been like a resident of the island that
- 30:00our along took over. So here I am as a viewer seeing this moment,
- 30:07and it's not even like Nami getting to make her declarations about how she
- 30:12feels about it, and I'm already a little irritated. And then instead of
- 30:18Jim Day Like getting a chance to explain immediately, it's the obligatory flashbacks,
- 30:26and we go through the people that Nami loved and lost and the murder in
- 30:33front of her and being taken in by the pirates and kidnapped so that she
- 30:37was forced to be their navigator. And I'm just like, oh my god,
- 30:44can we please, can we please just get an explanation, And Jim
- 30:48Bay just says, I'm sorry, you had a truly horrific experience, and
- 30:56Nami says, I did, it was a nightmare. Nothing will ever make
- 31:00me change the way I feel about Arlong. That said, until two years
- 31:07ago, when we made the trip to Sabaoti, I had no idea that
- 31:11even the strongest fishmen were routinely persecuted by humans. When Kamie was kidnapped and
- 31:18we tried to save her, I couldn't believe what I saw. And she
- 31:23says it was Saboote Park right in front of me, the spitting image of
- 31:30Arlong Park before it was destroyed. Guys, they don't look the same,
- 31:41they don't write. This confused me a lot, she's saying, the spitting
- 31:48image, and we are given a like almost side by side, look at
- 31:53these two buildings and they look completely different. What what are we doing?
- 32:01It just you're telling me a thing. I don't know. Maybe maybe it's
- 32:07the translation. Maybe it's supposed to be like not that the buildings look identical,
- 32:15but that they have a similar like I but spitting image means identical.
- 32:22But you guys like they're the Subodie Park is white with like round around sort
- 32:30of turret in different with different floors and several other turrets going around it that
- 32:37are like also round. It's got much more of like almost a birthday cake
- 32:44sort of aesthetic to it. And then we cut to our Long Park,
- 32:49which is square and yellow with red pointy roofs in a sort of like Pagoda
- 32:59style, and I it felt very strange because it was like almost as if
- 33:07the dialogue was trying to reccon something that the animation didn't support at all.
- 33:15Saraphim says, there's some similarity, but yeah, translation thing the live action
- 33:21won't say. Way more into Sorry I'm trying to. I think there's a
- 33:25typo, but I way more into our Long Park matching up to Sabodie Park
- 33:30with all the carnival games. Oh went way more. Oh I see,
- 33:37Oh I get Yeah, I forgot about the carnival things that they did with
- 33:43the with the live action. And it's so funny because like watching the live
- 33:49action, I don't remember if I even asked why there were so many carnival
- 33:52games. I think that I assumed those carnival games had like been there for
- 33:57the island, and that when our Long took over they were still there.
- 34:02You know, he just didn't get rid of them. I don't think I
- 34:06realized that he had like put them in place, and I figured that it
- 34:12was just meant to make it an interesting set piece, huh okay, But
- 34:19yeah, it just was a weird moment of like am I taking crazy pills.
- 34:23The only thing that's like at all similar are the fonts on the front
- 34:29of each of the buildings, and Hachi says, we wanted a place of
- 34:35our own. I'm not saying this to make you forgive any of us,
- 34:38but it's true. Arlong really hated humans too much. And we get a
- 34:47flashback from Hachi's POV about how much he terrorized people, and he says,
- 34:54you know, he went too far, But for as long as I can
- 34:59remember, we yearned for the world that the humans lived in. And we
- 35:04get to see all of them as little kids, frankly adorable, swimming up
- 35:12to the surface and they're gazing on the land and just sort of this like
- 35:17it's just absolutely out of their reach, and all of the shining lights of
- 35:23the carnival and everything that's happening, and there's nothing distinct about it. It's
- 35:30just sort of the overall impression of all of this light and color and how
- 35:37magical it seemed. And I really liked the way that this was done because
- 35:40this is something that felt really true to how memory can work from when you're
- 35:45a kid. You don't fully like, you don't have a full picture in
- 35:53your mind, you remember the overall impression more than you remember anything specific.
- 36:02And so the fact that, like we know that they're looking at a carnival,
- 36:07they probably didn't know that's what they were looking at as little kids.
- 36:10They just knew it was flashing lights and you know, moving objects and sound,
- 36:17and it was exciting and different and enraptured them. And Hatchi said,
- 36:27our jealousy drove us to hurt people like you. And as he's saying this,
- 36:32he's like getting very agitated, and Chopper has to come over and be
- 36:36like, sir, you're going to make yourself sick. You've got to lay
- 36:38down, and I'm going to make more medicine for you. So Hachi is
- 36:44like we were not considered anything more than basically just fish. And then two
- 36:50hundred years ago, the Reungo Kingdom became a member country of the World Government.
- 36:58They established friendly relations with humans, and their king was even allowed to
- 37:02participate in the World Summit. But despite that, humans still had hate in
- 37:08their hearts. The beginning of the Great Pirate Arrow is probably the worst time
- 37:14in my life. This is Den talking. It was hard to be a
- 37:17fish man. I vividly remember my fear human pirates running wild on the island.
- 37:24Anywhere you went seemed dangerous, so much violence I'll never forget. And
- 37:31we see like a flashback of all of these pirates landing, explosions, fire,
- 37:39and I'm sorry, guys, Pippin again, Pippen, can you stop
- 37:44it please? So Jim May then says, And then it was the fateful
- 37:50day where Whitebeard arrived on the island and saved us. I was so sorry,
- 37:55you guys aw this dog. He made his powerful presence, felt claiming
- 38:02Fishman Island as his own. Because of him, peace returned to our home.
- 38:08And then he's like, you know, that was great. He really
- 38:13tried to help, but he couldn't just single handedly change the way that people
- 38:17saw us, the reality that you saw at Sabaodi like, that's the way
- 38:24things have been, and folks who are able to get power are often resistant
- 38:31to change once they get there. So even though there were lots of promises
- 38:37made about how we were going to fix the relationship between fishmen and humans,
- 38:44the worst bigots and they use that word, which I really appreciated, were
- 38:49the people in control to begin with, the ones who should be leading by
- 38:52example. So it just didn't change anything. And you know, we had
- 39:01the people here who were deciding that they were going to handle shit. And
- 39:07there were two different figures we had. First the Queen Otohime. I'm going
- 39:15to pretty much mostly just call her the Queen. Now we get to see
- 39:21some of what her deal was. It's kind of funny because she's like the
- 39:30there's a connection drawn between her and the princess being cry babies, and the
- 39:37Princess's crying is just so without cause a lot of the time to me,
- 39:43but the Queen's makes a lot more sense. And I was just like,
- 39:45Princess, can you do it like this? Can you like make your crying
- 39:51meaningful instead of just this annoying background noise. And then he says, then
- 39:55the other one was named Fisher Tiger, who freed countless slaves. And this
- 40:02is somebody that we have heard of. To set himself apart from the humans,
- 40:07Tiger broke an unspoken rule, invading the holy land of Mariegeois himself and
- 40:14freeing the slaves within. He would go on to form the Sun Pirates.
- 40:20Many of its members were fishermen who were formerly slaves of the nobles, and
- 40:24they are the ones who make up the Sun pirates and he's like, yeah,
- 40:29that the brand that we all had was meant to cover up the brand
- 40:36that was given to us when we were slaves, to identify us. And
- 40:43he says we were seen as foes of the world government. We made it
- 40:47that much more difficult for the queen, and he's he says, bless her
- 40:53heart, but I don't really get a sense, even though he says like
- 40:59we were making it harder for her, I don't believe he really regrets what
- 41:05he did, and I don't think he should. For the record, there's
- 41:09just a real sort of sense of like, I know her heart was in
- 41:14the right place, and I know that she was doing the best that she
- 41:17could, but there was just no way for both of our methods to like
- 41:22coexist well. And he says, like the Queen was trying to, you
- 41:30know, preserve our future. She was very forward thinking, but Fisher Tiger
- 41:37threw his future away to say to those of his race who were suffering as
- 41:42slaves, no one can say who was right or wrong. And he says
- 41:50like they both wanted the same thing either way. They both wanted to make
- 41:57life better for the fishmen, and both of their lives ended in total tragedy,
- 42:02but they were working toward the same goal, even if it didn't look
- 42:07like they were. And then the episode ends, and I was so irritated
- 42:15because we're getting into some interesting territory here, but like there's still no explanation
- 42:23explicitly for our long yet, which is how the cliffhanger of the previous episode
- 42:29ended. And I was like, are you serious, Like we're still not
- 42:31just gonna get that explanation yet. I understand that we're like setting the stage
- 42:37and everything and that is necessary, but I'm just telling you how I felt
- 42:42at the end of this one. I was just like, oh, calm
- 42:44on. So then we go into episode two of the three, and we
- 42:53get the story about the Queen and how she was handling things, and we
- 42:58get one of the most bizarre So all right, Jinbay says, you have
- 43:06to understand what our world was like sixteen years ago, and we find out
- 43:15that the Queen she was like out and about one day when a robber stole
- 43:21a bunch of money from some business and he flees down the street carrying a
- 43:27mermaid at gunpoint as a hostage to guarantee his own getaway, and the Queen
- 43:35sees this, and she decides she's going to get involved, despite all of
- 43:40her guards telling her not to, and she just heads towards the sky at
- 43:46full speed, and he shoots at her and evidently misses. It was a
- 43:53little like unclear to me at first. I thought that she was going to
- 44:00like some sort of devil fruit power, and it may be that she has,
- 44:02and we just didn't get to find out what it is yet. But
- 44:07she's it seems like she's just dodging all of the bullets because he pulls that
- 44:12trigger a few times, So maybe it's supposed to be not necessarily like a
- 44:15devil fruit power, but just that she is so quick, you know,
- 44:21and agile that she is able to dodge, and she manages to just slap
- 44:28this guy across the face and sends him flying. The poor girl. She
- 44:34goes flying and gets caught by one of the guards, and then we have
- 44:39the Queen standing over this man, and she has the weirdest face, you
- 44:46guys. She's got like a very round face with a pointy chin, but
- 44:55her eyes and nose and mouth are set down into like the bottom half of
- 45:00the circle, so she's got a really big forehead and just a like her
- 45:07her face just takes up so little space. The whole thing is she also,
- 45:13it turns out, is like super delicate, So she fractured her hand
- 45:17somehow by just hitting this guy. I don't is this supposed to be like
- 45:25she's so incredibly feminine that she's like more delicate than average, because there's a
- 45:35couple times where people mention the fact that she's could can be easily hurt,
- 45:42and the scene with her and this dude, she just starts to like he
- 45:50explains about how he has children at home who are starving, and she had
- 45:54just yelled at him about how he's being foolish and selfish, but he's like,
- 45:59well, you don't under stand what my life is like. So then
- 46:02she's like continuing to hit him because she's like, how do you think your
- 46:07children would feel knowing their father was a criminal, But then also starts crying
- 46:14about his hardships and the fact that she wasn't even aware of what a subject
- 46:20of her house was going through and how like much she regrets that and feels
- 46:25that she has let him down. But then she beats him up again,
- 46:30and it just goes back and forth and back and forth with her yelling at
- 46:35him and hitting him again, and all of the people on the sidelines are
- 46:40kind of like they're not sure what to think, you know, as soon
- 46:46as they start to be like, oh, she's such a good, patient,
- 46:50merciful person, then she hits him again, and everybody's sort of like,
- 46:52wait what. And then somebody is like, oh, look at all
- 46:55these children. They even love her, and they come running up to her,
- 47:01and she turns to see them, and she says, I will do
- 47:05everything I can to protect your smiling faces. And the first boy that reaches
- 47:10her, she just slaps to the floor and says, your nose is running
- 47:16terribly. If I don't reprimand you for it, who will. So,
- 47:22first of all, what the fuck is with everybody hitting children? It's just
- 47:30so like these stories are just full of people who are meant to be good,
- 47:37decent human beings, who are ultimately lovable, and yet, my god,
- 47:43can you restrain yourselves please? But then, to top off the weirdness,
- 47:50she says to the little boy that she hit once he sits up with
- 47:52tears in his eyes, you look ridiculous with mucus dribbling out of just one
- 47:59side. It's more dignified to dribble from both nostrils, at which point he
- 48:07rushes her with a giant bear hug for some reason. Okay, I guess
- 48:16I this is for me. This is very nothing like this queen, doesn't
- 48:24she sucks like this combined with her just like wandering around trying to get everybody
- 48:30to like sign this agreement, I was like, Wow, you are really
- 48:36not doing anything, huh Like it just felt like the most silly, pointless
- 48:45exercise to just wander around. First of all, she's the queen, so
- 48:51she could just make things happen to a degree if she wanted to. But
- 48:57she's not offering any actual assurances to the people that she's trying to get to
- 49:01sign this like agreement to go live amongst the humans she and I appreciate that
- 49:07she's not giving a guarantee on the one hand, because it's not as if
- 49:09that's something that she can really like, you know, she can't deliver on
- 49:15that. However, it also doesn't seem like she's really thought that part through.
- 49:23She seems to just want people to like go live near humans and trust
- 49:30that eventually this will be good for all of us, even though in the
- 49:36short term they are probably going to suffer and die, and they're still out
- 49:40here being sold as slaves. So she's got no plan except that like it's
- 49:47the first step towards things eventually, like getting better between the two of us,
- 49:53which isn't really Like it's sort of one of those points of view that
- 50:00drives me nuts, which is the idea that like progress is an inevitability of
- 50:08time passing, and that's not true. Progress has to be worked for,
- 50:15education has to be done. There needs to be like a real specific type
- 50:21of attempt, and she's not offering anything specific enough. She just wants these
- 50:29people to risk their lives and their freedom in this what feels like very vague
- 50:36an unorganized way. So between the weirdness of this encounter with this guy and
- 50:45the children and the way that she keeps waving around this agreement that she's trying
- 50:49to get people to sign, I pretty much had my fill of her,
- 50:52like immediately I am not interested. She like, I'm sure she meant well,
- 51:00but this is just a complete waste of time. Sarahim says. Her
- 51:07frailty I think is more due to her being a goldfish mermaid. Oh and
- 51:12the kid slapping thing is just a cultural thing with tough love being more accepted
- 51:15there, at least at the time and when people like odo were growing up.
- 51:20I know, I know that, but it's not fun to watch.
- 51:23It's disturbing, honestly, to like watch it happen and then watch that person
- 51:29immediately hug that child, and that child is supposed to like be glad that
- 51:34they were hit and still trust that adult. Like it just it's I do
- 51:39not enjoy it. And I love when somebody is like, oh, she's
- 51:44such a good person, and another person in the audience just says, I
- 51:47guess. So that was my fucking reaction. Also, so I appreciated that
- 51:53there was somebody else there who was feeling the same sort of misgivings that I
- 51:58was. So I'm gonna jump ahead a little bit here, because there's a
- 52:04lot of like her attempting to speechify and convince people and it's not really working.
- 52:13And let's say I'm trying to see oh yeah, so the two I
- 52:22can't remember they called left and right? Is that what you guys told me?
- 52:24The two sort of advisors to the king are talking to him about like,
- 52:30you know, what she's doing is really dangerous, and he's like,
- 52:32yeah, she knows that, but and he says, they were our ancestors
- 52:38weren't able to make this vision a reality. I can't stop her from doing
- 52:49what she thinks is right, so it's your job to keep her safe.
- 52:53And then we go to a bar where a bunch of humans are sitting getting
- 53:00weighted on by a fishwoman, and the place is full of other fishmen,
- 53:07and apparently these guys are like I think they're propositioning her, because one of
- 53:14them says, like, we want special service, and she says, I
- 53:16don't know what you mean, and he says, oh, come on,
- 53:21we know how you fishmen are. And at first I thought he was actually
- 53:25specifically talking about the men in the room, but then I realized he meant,
- 53:30like the race. And I think it's supposed to be like, oh,
- 53:35we know that your like species is particularly sexual, you know, promiscuous,
- 53:44whatever, and so we're here to cash in on that because we all
- 53:47know that about you, which is actually a thing with a lot of different
- 53:53groups, but with black folks especially being sexualized. That is like a very
- 53:58persistent narrative and it's super gross. But this dude is trying to start some
- 54:06shit, and he really is acting tough until finally Jimbay says, get out
- 54:13of here. You're ruining my meal. And when he turns and sees the
- 54:17size of jim Bay and the overall vibe, he just immediately is like,
- 54:22uh, sorry, nevermind. And I was like, yeah, that's a
- 54:27good call. I kind of thought he might keep pushing the issue, and
- 54:32instead he immediately recognizes that this is not the one move on, do something
- 54:37else with your time. So we then get the the talk about this like
- 54:46particular neighborhood that he grew up in. So Jimmy is talking about how,
- 54:54like, you know, we grew up in this particular dis strict that is
- 55:00a bad neighborhood, and he says, there's not a lot of options when
- 55:07you come from there. Originally it was an orphanage for children with no living
- 55:10relatives, but in time the orphanage became too much for the administrators to handle.
- 55:17Before long it became a lawless area that attracted delinquents from all over the
- 55:23island. Back then, Fisher Tiger was the only one that we had as
- 55:30a leader, but he eventually left to do his own thing. So I
- 55:34joined Neptune's army. Despite being fishmen. Macro and some of the others started
- 55:45helping the kidnappers, which is really again, that's like a thing that happened,
- 55:53but also is it's weaponized so much that I don't even like to bring
- 56:00up because it's always like a bad faith mentioned. And he says, everybody
- 56:06else left, And then one day he runs into Arlong, who is taking
- 56:15he's got one of the collections of signatures, and this woman I don't remember
- 56:21if it's mentioned specifically, but I'm assuming that she's working on behalf of the
- 56:27Queen, collecting these people who are agreeing to try out this experiment. And
- 56:36Arlong is confronted by one of the fishmen who is yelling at him about like
- 56:43where he's from. So even though he is also a fishman, he is
- 56:47still talking down to Arlong in a way that I was just like, wow,
- 56:52yeah, this makes sense. Though nobody's a monolith, and even within
- 56:57a particular like oppressed group, there is still a hierarchy and a structure there
- 57:02that people can use to make themselves feel better than other people. So he
- 57:08grabs his guard and picks him up, and he's like, I'm gonna fucking
- 57:14go around and clean up these fucking humans. You guys in Neptune's army should
- 57:20be thanking us. Maybe I should beat a donation out of you. And
- 57:27Jimby is sitting right there doing nothing. This guy has to yell and be
- 57:36like, uh, Jimby, hey, this guy is gonna kill me.
- 57:38I think, can you? And Jimmy is like smoking a pipe and just
- 57:44very slowly says, all right, punk, put the rookie down and just
- 57:49walk away. He's weak, but he's one of my men. And I
- 57:53was just like, you, really, I don't feel we're going to do
- 58:00anything until he cried out for help, wear Yogen Bay. It just felt
- 58:04really like he was just gonna sit and watch. There was no urgency to
- 58:07this at all. And he says, in as far as those papers you
- 58:13took, they mean nothing to you, but the queen wants them. And
- 58:20Arlong starts laughing, and he's like, they're calling you boss. That's not
- 58:27the way that soldiers normally like talk to somebody in charge. What's that about?
- 58:32And he tosses this dude aside, gives him the papers back, and
- 58:37by gives them back, I mean tosses them on top of the man on
- 58:40the ground, and then calls him brother and says, I can always recognize
- 58:49somebody who came from the Fishman district, and Arlong is like trying to really
- 58:55ingratiate himself here, but in Bay is saying, I don't want to be
- 59:02categorized alongside you. You became a fucking bullshit pirate, like you're trash,
- 59:12and Arlong says, it doesn't matter where we're from, you can't talk to
- 59:15me like that. And as they're about to like go head to head,
- 59:21there's a yell and it turns out that our friend, uh the oh my
- 59:28god, catfish. I keep wanting to say that tiger, tigerfish, tiger
- 59:32shark, I don't remember, but we're just gonna call him tiger. He
- 59:38comes up and he's about to report to the palace. This is he has
- 59:47been on some adventures and he has seen some shit. And what he tells
- 59:52them when he goes in and has his like moment is that he has seen
- 59:59human name and that's kind of all he needs to say. And the queen
- 1:00:05begins to like get tears in her eyes because it's very clear that what he
- 1:00:13has witnessed has been truly horrific. And he says, you're telling that Neptune
- 1:00:21says, you're telling me you're going to free the slaves. Surely you can't
- 1:00:24be serious. And Tiger says, I am, I can't stand it anymore,
- 1:00:30the thought of our people living a nightmare. Even as we're speaking right
- 1:00:35now, our people are being treated like animals. And Neptune says, yes,
- 1:00:40but and I was like, I don't like that, Neptune, come
- 1:00:44on, and Tiger says, look, I'm not excited about this. I
- 1:00:51am telling you because I know it's going to be a problem for you,
- 1:00:55but please don't rap me out. And Neptune says, why are you?
- 1:01:00Are you so adamant about this? And I'm just like, sir, why
- 1:01:02aren't you more adamant yourself? Like why he I understand handling things on a
- 1:01:12diplomatic level, but he really just doesn't seem upset enough to me at all.
- 1:01:19And the like way that this episode ends is some dude like running off
- 1:01:29and running into Jimbay and telling Jimbay that Tiger attacked the celestial dragons, and
- 1:01:37we get to jump over to like the Mariegeois where all of the slaves were
- 1:01:43freed, and we see Boa and her sisters leaving, and he is just
- 1:01:50like with one fucking fell Swoop really started a war here. And jim Ay
- 1:01:57hears this and he is in spe byed and he decides to fucking quit the
- 1:02:02guards and go and join up. And ar Along also hears the news and
- 1:02:09is like, oh, yeah, this is what we want to be in
- 1:02:12on. And so we get the scene where they're all getting together and they
- 1:02:16are agreeing to work for Tiger, and they all get branded to cover up
- 1:02:24if they had scars from being branded as slaves or not. All of them
- 1:02:30have this same brand, so you can't tell who used to be a slave
- 1:02:35and who didn't, which I think is a really cool idea. So I
- 1:02:44kind of like I've talked a lot about some of the stuff that's coming up
- 1:02:49next, but I think that, like, because I'm running out of time
- 1:02:54here, I'm going to mainly talk for the next episode just about the contrast
- 1:03:01between the way that Tiger is trying to approach this versus the way that our
- 1:03:07Along wants to approach this, and the like, the way that Tiger is
- 1:03:15going about this is essentially you have to give up on your need for revenge.
- 1:03:24That's the part that is going to tip us over into them just coming
- 1:03:30back at us. If we can't just move forward and forgive and look to
- 1:03:38the future, it's going to be this endless cycle. And understandably Arlong is
- 1:03:46just really not down for that. He just, you know, is like,
- 1:03:52what's the point of doing this if we're then going to try and like
- 1:03:55make nice with them. We just rescued these people from literal cages, from
- 1:04:01being treated like chattel, and now I'm supposed to like build a house next
- 1:04:11to them and just live beside them, And you think that's gonna work.
- 1:04:15I'm so sorry, bruh, but that's not how we want to operate.
- 1:04:21And the like success of rescuing all of these different slaves, it's like very
- 1:04:34invigorating for everybody and inspirational to all of them. But you know, every
- 1:04:41second that they have like, well, maybe we can make it work with
- 1:04:44humans, they run across another person who is just like, oh, you're
- 1:04:48nothing but animals. You're you know, like freaks and mutants and whatever,
- 1:04:56and they just there aren't enough decent people to make it feel like all humans
- 1:05:03aren't the enemy. The Queen keeps having to say that I know some humans
- 1:05:09are bad, but there are good ones out there. And I was like,
- 1:05:12look, there are and I know that, but also we don't really
- 1:05:16see any in the midst of this whole like flashback. And at one point
- 1:05:23they take a ship and one of the I don't know if he's like the
- 1:05:28just the captain or if he has a more official title with the Marines,
- 1:05:31but Tiger picks this guy up and dangles him over the side, but then
- 1:05:38says, I'm not going to kill you because I'm like, we're not monsters.
- 1:05:43And as he leaves this guy there, Arlan comes out and tosses some
- 1:05:47other dude to the ground and says, you were born human, which is
- 1:05:51a sin, so you're worthy of execution, and just like slaughters this dude
- 1:05:58on the deck in front of everybody. And we go to Kisaru here,
- 1:06:04who is getting like the news about all of this, and I cannot get
- 1:06:09over how funny his whole delivery of everything is. How oh scary fishman.
- 1:06:17I guess we should have expected that. And he's got like a real tone
- 1:06:21to him that he's not that concerned or invested, even though I believe he
- 1:06:26is. It's just the way he talks. And we have yet to fight
- 1:06:31them on land, so it's hard to tell how strong they are are along
- 1:06:36right, I've heard of him, and I just want to say, like,
- 1:06:42we know what's going on here, but we still haven't gotten the like
- 1:06:45released are long thing, we still haven't gotten the answer to that. So
- 1:06:53eventually we have the the introduction of this little human girl character who is being
- 1:07:01She was apparently being held as a slave despite being human. I don't really
- 1:07:10understand how this happens because I didn't get the impression that that was like ever
- 1:07:15allowed, but I must be wrong. She hasn't seen her parents in many
- 1:07:23years. She would like to help. It's doubtful we can get her safely
- 1:07:28across the ocean. Can she go with you? Her name is Kowala and
- 1:07:31she is smiling constantly. But later on we find out kind of what's going
- 1:07:40on with that. So they take her on, but ar Along is himself
- 1:07:45really not on board. He's like, she's a fucking human, what did
- 1:07:48you agree to this for? And he decks her and sends her like flying
- 1:07:53over the deck. He decks her to the deck and Arlong is like,
- 1:07:59and why she's smiling? Why is she still smiling? When she sits up,
- 1:08:04she's bleeding, But she's still smiling, and she rips off a piece
- 1:08:09of her own like pants and it begins to scrub the floor the deck and
- 1:08:15says, I'm sorry, I'll clean, i will work. I'm not going
- 1:08:20to be a bother to you. And the voice actress who does her voice
- 1:08:27for this scene is so good because she just really makes this plea like devastating,
- 1:08:33and eventually Jim Bay comes and sits in front of her and is like,
- 1:08:40hey, stop, you know it's okay. We're not going to do
- 1:08:44that to you. Can you blame her that she's not trusting anybody, that
- 1:08:47she's trying to keep this smile on her face, And she keeps on talking
- 1:08:50about how she won't cry, and finally Tiger comes to her and is like,
- 1:08:56it is okay if you cry, and eventually he's like, bring her
- 1:09:01into my cabin and you hear a scream. And when she comes out,
- 1:09:06she's got the brand on her back that all of them have, so she's
- 1:09:10like officially a member of the crew now. And I don't know that we
- 1:09:15have met Koala or if we are going to. I feel like this is
- 1:09:19a completely new character. But she is just so like insistent that they won't
- 1:09:29kill her because she won't cry, and just eventually when they're like no,
- 1:09:34no, no, but you can, Tiger goes to like the edge of
- 1:09:39the ship and takes the gun and tosses it over and has everybody behind him
- 1:09:45drop their weapons and like makes it clear everybody is with me. We're not
- 1:09:51going to hurt you no matter how far the journey, and he says,
- 1:09:59we're taking this girl back home, and finally Koala lets herself cry. Now
- 1:10:06I'm a little concerned because I know how Arlong is exactly how this is going
- 1:10:12to go. We do see some of the fishmen, by the way,
- 1:10:15in this crew that we dealt with back on NAMMY's Island, so we duck
- 1:10:20Lips is making an appearance here. But yeah, Arlong, you know,
- 1:10:27he's like the only one that's really not participating in the cheering and the the
- 1:10:33ceremony of the moment. And I'm not excited about seeing how he decides to
- 1:10:41try and fuck this whole thing up because I feel like it's going to be
- 1:10:43not good. But yeah, okay, okay, that's everything. I'm going
- 1:10:50to wrap this one up because I am over time as usual, but I
- 1:10:58really I am interested at how Arlong gets got and how jimbe lets him out,
- 1:11:04but we still don't know, so i'll have to see. Thank you
- 1:11:10again Florian for commissioning this one, and thank you to Seraphim for being in
- 1:11:14the chat. Until next time, to the lou motherfuckers. That was an
- 1:11:46Unspoiled Network podcast.
