- 0:02Some seasons of growth feel active.
- 0:05You can see the progress, you can feel momentum.
- 0:09There's a sense of direction and clarity, and it seems like
- 0:12everything is moving forward. This episode is about the other
- 0:17seasons, the quiet seasons, the ones where nothing seems to be
- 0:22changing. No matter how hard you try, you
- 0:26keep waiting for breakthrough, you keep waiting for
- 0:29transformation. You hope the work that you're
- 0:32doing inside of yourself will eventually show up on the
- 0:36outside. But day after day, everything
- 0:39looks exactly the same. And it can be one of those most
- 0:44discouraging parts of growth and leadership, that gap between
- 0:48effort and evidence, between what you hope is happening and
- 0:53what you can actually see. Because even when you're doing
- 0:58the right things, even when your intentions are good, even when
- 1:02you feel something shifting beneath the surface, there are
- 1:06long stretches where nothing seems to confirm it.
- 1:11Today, we're going to go inside that gap.
- 1:13Because what feels like frustration, delay, or wasted
- 1:17effort may be the slow formation preparing you for the season you
- 1:23were actually made for. The one that's aligned with your
- 1:26purpose, not your timeline. And here's the part that most
- 1:32people don't realize. Sometimes the development
- 1:36happening in you right now isn't for this season at all.
- 1:41It's for a future moment. A season you can't see it, but
- 1:46one that will make sense once you step into it.
- 1:50Many of the gifts, strengths, and desires that feel unused
- 1:54today aren't being wasted, they're just being aged.
- 2:00The development that you're frustrated with today may be
- 2:04exactly what your future leadership is going to require.
- 2:13When whiskey is poured into a barrel, it begins a
- 2:16transformation that can't be rushed.
- 2:20Some of the notes that define a great whiskey take years to
- 2:24rise. They develop slowly as the
- 2:27spirit expands and contracts through heat and cold, through
- 2:31seasons, through time and pressure.
- 2:35And no matter how much you want the process to move faster, the
- 2:39whiskey is not ready until the whiskey is ready.
- 2:44If you bottle it too early, the notes haven't had time to become
- 2:48what they're meant to be. You could drink the whiskey, you
- 2:51could even taste where it was headed, but it hasn't reached
- 2:55the season it was aging for. It's a version of itself, just
- 3:01not the one that time and pressure were preparing it to
- 3:04become. Every distiller understands this
- 3:07tension. Aging isn't about making the
- 3:10whiskey older. It's about making it complete,
- 3:14bringing forward character that only time can uncover.
- 3:19And the barrel plays a crucial role.
- 3:22It's more than just a container. The wood interacts with the
- 3:26spirit, drawing out flavor, softening edges and deepening
- 3:31color and creating depth that was impossible before aging
- 3:35began. But even the barrel has its
- 3:40limits. It can transform what's there,
- 3:43but it can't make the whiskey something it was never meant to
- 3:46be. Our lives work the same way.
- 3:51We are shaped by the environments that we grow up in
- 3:54and the environments that we choose.
- 3:57Some we enter willingly, some we stay in for too long, and some
- 4:03we have no choice but to endure for a season.
- 4:07And all of them shape us. They draw strengths out of us.
- 4:14They develop resilience or insight or compassion or
- 4:17conviction. And for those who lead, these
- 4:21environments often reveal qualities we didn't know we
- 4:25would need later on. But our environments, just like
- 4:30the barrel, can't define who we become.
- 4:34They influence us, but they don't determine our identity.
- 4:39Some notes inside of us. We're always there, just
- 4:43waiting. Waiting for maturity, waiting
- 4:46for alignment, waiting for purpose, waiting for the moment
- 4:51when they could finally come forward.
- 4:55Which brings me to a story that began when I was about 12.
- 5:01When I was about 12 years old, I taught myself how to play
- 5:04guitar. Long before the Internet or
- 5:07tutorials. It was just me and a guitar that
- 5:10was awkward in my hands, just trying to figure out what
- 5:14sounded good just by listening to records over and over again.
- 5:20Back then, the guitar wasn't about meaning, it was just
- 5:24exciting. It made me imagine a different
- 5:27version of myself. To a teenager, playing the
- 5:32guitar meant possibility and performance in crowds.
- 5:37I wanted to be a rock star, But when I left for college, the
- 5:42guitar stayed home. And then life moved on,
- 5:46responsibilities took over, and without any dramatic moment, the
- 5:51dream just disappeared from view.
- 5:54The guitar sat idle and eventually I forgot it was even
- 5:59there. Like many of us, I assumed
- 6:03silence meant the dream was not meant for me, that it had just
- 6:08been a phase, a childhood idea, something that belonged to a
- 6:14younger version of me. Decades went by like that.
- 6:20Then, sometime around 45, something stirred.
- 6:25A quiet prompting, a sense that it was time to pick up the
- 6:28guitar again. Not to chase the old dream, but
- 6:33to follow a whisper. It started with playing a few
- 6:37songs with the band at a small church.
- 6:41That led to joining a worship team, which led to a mission in
- 6:46the Czech Republic where I taught teenagers guitar while we
- 6:51shared the gospel. And eventually I did find myself
- 6:56on a massive stage playing in front of thousands of people.
- 7:00It was exactly what my teenage self once imagined.
- 7:05But here's what surprised me. Standing on that stage didn't
- 7:09feel like fulfilment. It didn't feel like purpose.
- 7:14It actually felt incomplete. For years I thought the silence
- 7:20meant that that dream had died. But silence isn't the same thing
- 7:25as death. Some dreams don't disappear.
- 7:30They age, they wait. They change shape as we change
- 7:35shape. They mature as we mature.
- 7:40My dream had to age because I had to age not so I can become
- 7:45someone different, but to become more of who I was created to be.
- 7:51I needed the time and pressure. I needed disappointment.
- 7:55I needed growth. I needed a deeper hunger for
- 7:59significance before the notes inside of me could rise up in
- 8:03the right way. Only then could the guitar mean
- 8:07something different in my hands. Only then could purpose begin to
- 8:12make sense. And that purpose looked nothing
- 8:17like the dream that I had imagined when I was a kid.
- 8:21But we'll return to that a little bit later.
- 8:25One of the hardest parts of leadership is the waiting.
- 8:30The waiting between who you feel you are becoming and the season
- 8:34that has not shown up yet. The waiting between your
- 8:38capability and the opportunity that hasn't opened up.
- 8:44The waiting between knowing you can lead at a higher level but
- 8:48not being invited to it yet. And here's the part that a lot
- 8:52of leaders struggle with. You can be ready, but not
- 8:57released. This shows up in a lot of
- 9:01places. A leader who outgrows their role
- 9:05but the organization hasn't caught up.
- 9:07A director feels the internal pole towards strategy, but it's
- 9:13still treated as a tactician. A senior leader who matures
- 9:18beyond the demands of their environment, but the next
- 9:22assignment is yet to be revealed.
- 9:25It's not always misalignment. Sometimes it's just aging.
- 9:31Distillers know this tension well.
- 9:34Two barrels from the same batch, same mash bill, same Rick house
- 9:39can age at completely different speeds. 1 matures early, 1 takes
- 9:45a decade longer. Not because they did something
- 9:49wrong, but because the environment is doing something
- 9:52different inside each one. Leadership works in the same
- 9:57way. Some leaders grow into their
- 9:59purpose early. Others take longer because
- 10:03deeper notes are developing the kind that require pressure and
- 10:08patience and seasons where no one sees the internal work
- 10:12that's happening. There is another tension.
- 10:17Sometimes the environment has already done all it can for you.
- 10:22Internally, you've changed. Externally.
- 10:26Nothing matches. Your values no longer fit the
- 10:30pace. Your identity has shifted, but
- 10:34your surroundings still treat you like the earlier version of
- 10:38yourself. Distillers understand this
- 10:41tension, too. A barrel can sit too long in the
- 10:45Rick house. The aging starts to become
- 10:48aggressive, the environment pushes it past what it was meant
- 10:53to become, and the distiller recognizes it's time to move the
- 10:58barrel. Many leaders feel this same
- 11:02prompting, but misinterpreted as being stuck or behind.
- 11:08Most of the time, they're not stuck, They're aging.
- 11:13They're developing the wisdom that cannot be learned quickly.
- 11:17They're forming convictions that pressure alone can reveal.
- 11:22They're becoming the person their future leadership is going
- 11:25to require of them. And for leaders who are in that
- 11:29tension between what they've built and what they're built
- 11:33for, a deeper question rises up. Did I miss my moment?
- 11:42Is it too late? Did time run out on what I was
- 11:46supposed to do? The funny thing is, is that no
- 11:51distiller fears that. They know you can't be late for
- 11:55a season if it's still forming you.
- 11:59Some barrels are meant for early release, some are meant for long
- 12:04aging, and a rare few become single barrel expressions
- 12:10because the slow work made them extraordinary.
- 12:15Your leadership isn't behind, it's becoming.
- 12:20What feels like delay might actually be development.
- 12:24What feels like misalignment may be a signal that your
- 12:28environment has finished its work.
- 12:31What feels like nothing's happening may be the quiet
- 12:35formation of significance. So back to my story.
- 12:42The purpose behind my music was revealed in a place that was
- 12:47very different from the stages that I once imagined.
- 12:52Most nights it happens around a fire pit, Just me, an acoustic
- 12:56guitar and a glass of whiskey and the kind of space where
- 13:01people can let their guard down. The songs I play are simple,
- 13:06nothing polished. But something happens there.
- 13:12The guitar becomes a doorway into honesty, reflection,
- 13:17worship and connection. I've watched fear soften, pain
- 13:24surface, faith awaken, and friendships deepen in a in ways
- 13:30that felt almost sacred. That's when I realized this.
- 13:37For me, the guitar was never meant to take me to success.
- 13:42It was meant to take me to significance.
- 13:46That note inside of me was never waiting for a stage.
- 13:50It was waiting for purpose. And that purpose had nothing to
- 13:55do with crowds, but everything to do with connection.
- 14:00The years of silence, the delay, the longing, the timing that
- 14:06wasn't mine. All of it was aging.
- 14:10The note, all of it was preparing me to carry it with
- 14:15humility and depth. It took me years, decades, to
- 14:21see it. But this was the real dream all
- 14:24along. If you're in a season where
- 14:30progress feels delayed or direction feels unclear, it's
- 14:35easy to assume that you are waiting on your purpose.
- 14:40But your purpose has been there the whole time.
- 14:44Sometimes we just need time to grow into the version of
- 14:47ourselves who can carry it well. Distillers know how tempting it
- 14:53is to open a barrel early, to check on the progress, to taste
- 14:58the promise before it's ready. But forcing the time and forcing
- 15:04the timing only distorts the outcome.
- 15:08So they stay attentive, they watch, they trust the process,
- 15:14and they let time do what only time can do.
- 15:19Maybe this is the same for you. Maybe you're not waiting on
- 15:23clarity. Maybe clarity is waiting on you,
- 15:28waiting for your identity, maturity, and purpose to all
- 15:32rise at the same time. Maybe the environment that
- 15:36you're in is shaping you, the way the barrel shapes the
- 15:41whiskey, bringing forward notes you didn't know were there.
- 15:47You're not waiting on purpose. You're being prepared for it,
- 15:52not changed into someone else, but growing into who you were
- 15:57created to be. And when that alignment happens,
- 16:02when the notes inside of you finally rise to meet the moment,
- 16:06well, that's where significance begins.
- 16:11Before we close, I want to leave you with a few tasting notes.
- 16:16Just like a good poor invites reflection, these questions are
- 16:20meant to help you pay attention to what's forming in you right
- 16:23now. Where do you feel the urge to
- 16:28open your barrel too soon, and what might still be developing
- 16:33beneath the surface? What parts of you went quiet for
- 16:38too long, and could that silence have been aging rather than
- 16:44absence? What signs or prompts in your
- 16:48life might be telling you that purpose isn't missing, it's
- 16:53maturing. Keep in mind that you're not
- 16:57waiting to become someone else, You're becoming who you were
- 17:02created to be. Wherever you are in your season,
- 17:07remember this. You're not waiting for your life
- 17:11to start. You're being shaped for
- 17:13something that will matter, something with weight, something
- 17:19with purpose. And remember, clarity isn't
- 17:25found, it's crafted. Thanks for listening to Crafted
