- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's the start of a new week.
- 0:15It's Monday, it's the 23rd of June, and you have decided that
- 0:20now is the time to spend a little moment with God's Word
- 0:23punctuating your day, to give God the space and the time to
- 0:28speak into your life. Oh, good for you friends.
- 0:31That is a great idea and I am going to do it with you.
- 0:34This week. We will continue reading through
- 0:36the book of Deuteronomy before we take a little break in the
- 0:40middle of the book to read some love poetry.
- 0:43Oh, that's going to be lovely. But between now and then we are
- 0:46going to cover a couple more of the commandments today and
- 0:50tomorrow Moses will talk through what it means not to misuse
- 0:53God's name, and then we'll round out the weak thinking about
- 0:57keeping the Sabbath holy. So Moses, he's going to speak
- 1:01through time and space, not just to those people about to enter
- 1:04God's promised land, but to you and me, friends, as we think
- 1:08about how we honour God in the way that we live.
- 1:11So let's do it, shall we? Let us unpack the third
- 1:14commandment together with God's people Israel, as we read
- 1:18together Deuteronomy chapter 13. Suppose there are prophets among
- 1:32you are those who dream dreams about the future, and they
- 1:36promise you signs or miracles, and the predictive signs or
- 1:40miracles occur. If they then say, Come, let us
- 1:44worship other gods, gods you have not known before, do not
- 1:48listen to them. The Lord God is testing you to
- 1:51see if you truly love Him with all your heart and soul.
- 1:55Serve only the Lord your God and fear Him alone.
- 2:00Obey His commands, listen to His voice, and cling to Him.
- 2:05The false prophets or visionaries who try to lead you
- 2:08astray must be put to death, for they encourage rebellion against
- 2:12the Lord your God, who redeemed you from slavery and brought you
- 2:16out of the land of Egypt. Since they try to lead you
- 2:20astray from the way the Lord your God commanded you to live,
- 2:24you must put them to death. In this way you will purge the
- 2:28evil from among you. Suppose someone secretly entices
- 2:33you, even your brother, your son or daughter, your beloved wife,
- 2:37or your closest friend, and says, Let us go worship other
- 2:41gods, gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known.
- 2:47They might suggest that you worship the gods of peoples who
- 2:50live nearby or who come from the ends of the earth.
- 2:53But do not give in or listen, have no pity and do not spare or
- 2:59protect them. You must put them to death.
- 3:02Strike the first blow yourself, and then all the people must
- 3:05join in. Stone the guilty ones to death,
- 3:08because they have tried to draw you away from the Lord your God,
- 3:12who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery.
- 3:17Then all Israel will hear about it and be afraid, and no one
- 3:22will act so wickedly again. When you begin living in the
- 3:26towns the Lord your God is giving you, you may hear that
- 3:30scoundrels among you are leading their fellow citizens astray by
- 3:34saying, Let us go worship other gods, gods you have not known
- 3:38before. In such cases you must examine
- 3:43the facts carefully. If you find that the report is
- 3:46true and such a detestable act has been committed among you,
- 3:51you must attack that town and completely destroy all its
- 3:54inhabitants as well as all the livestock.
- 3:58Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the
- 4:00open square and burn it. Burn the entire town as a burnt
- 4:06offering to the Lord your God. That town must remain a ruin
- 4:10forever. It may never be rebuilt.
- 4:13Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for
- 4:16destruction. Then the Lord will turn from His
- 4:20fierce anger and be merciful to you.
- 4:24He will have compassion on you and make you a large nation,
- 4:28just as He swore to your ancestors.
- 4:31The Lord your God will be merciful only if you listen to
- 4:34His voice and keep all His commandments that I'm giving you
- 4:38today, doing what pleases Him. Boy, Lord, Moses was not mincing
- 4:53words. It is just so abundantly clear
- 4:58in this chapter that You want us to hold Your name above all
- 5:03other names, and that if something tempts us away from
- 5:07You, we shouldn't just think poorly of it, but completely
- 5:10eradicated. Turn our backs on those things
- 5:13and fiercely pursue You, Lord, Because You have this incredible
- 5:21life of promise and an eternal life of blessing and close
- 5:27proximity to You, and You want nothing more than to see us
- 5:31there with you, our Lord. Protect our hearts.
- 5:35Keep us faithful to you. And Lord, when our human nature
- 5:40gets the better of us and our heart wanders from you and what
- 5:44You want for us, ah, please forgive us.
- 5:49Draw us back, back into Your arms, our loving God.
- 5:54We do love you, and we thank you for making us all possible
- 5:57through your Son Jesus, in whose name we pray.
- 6:00All these things. Amen.
