- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo, I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Ready for today's tiny topic? I've been looking forward to this one. Lucas: Me too. So, we've learned a lot of useful phrases — greetings, numbers, food, places. But there's something basic we haven't covered yet. Luna: Oh? What's that? Lucas: The days of the week. Knowing them helps you make plans, talk about schedules, and understand when things happen. Luna: Right. Let's start with Monday. How do you say Monday in Swahili? Lucas: Monday is Jumatatu. Say it with me: Jumatatu. Luna: Jumatatu. Lucas: Good. Jumatatu. Tuesday is Jumanne. Luna: Jumanne. Lucas: Wednesday is Jumatano. Luna: Jumatano. Lucas: Thursday is Alhamisi. This one's a bit different. Luna: Alhamisi. It has a nice rhythm. Lucas: Friday is Ijumaa. Luna: Ijumaa. Lucas: Saturday is Jumamosi. Luna: Jumamosi. That sounds like a day for relaxing. Lucas: Exactly. And Sunday is Jumapili. Luna: Jumapili. So all of them start with Juma except Thursday and Friday. Lucas: Good observation. Juma actually comes from the Arabic for 'gathering' — it's related to the week. Now, to say 'today is Monday', you say: Leo ni Jumatatu. Luna: Leo ni Jumatatu. So if today is Wednesday, I'd say: Leo ni Jumatano. Lucas: Perfect. Let's practice a few. So let's say today is Thursday. You'd say: Leo ni Alhamisi. Luna: Leo ni Alhamisi. Lucas: Great. Now imagine you're making plans. You could say 'Saturday I go to the market' — Jumamosi naenda sokoni. Luna: Jumamosi naenda sokoni. That uses the word for Saturday and 'I go' — we learned that before. Lucas: Right. So days of the week are very handy for making plans. Let's do a quick review. I'll say the English, you say the Swahili. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Monday. Luna: Jumatatu. Lucas: Tuesday. Luna: Jumanne. Lucas: Wednesday. Luna: Jumatano. Lucas: Thursday. Luna: Alhamisi. Lucas: Friday. Luna: Ijumaa. Lucas: Saturday. Luna: Jumamosi. Lucas: Sunday. Luna: Jumapili. Lucas: Excellent. You really nailed those. So if someone asks you 'Leo ni siku gani?' — what day is today? — you can answer. Luna: Leo ni Jumatatu. Easy. Lucas: And if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, and you'd like to support us, we have a tiny ask. Luna: Yeah. If today was worth a coffee to you, that's the link — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It helps us keep the show ad-free. Lucas: Exactly. No pressure. Now, let's practice one more phrase. How would you say 'Today is Sunday'? Luna: Leo ni Jumapili. Lucas: Perfect. And if you want to say 'I go to work on Monday' — Jumatatu naenda kazini. Luna: Jumatatu naenda kazini. That makes sense. Lucas: So now you can talk about days and make plans. Practice by saying what day it is each morning in Swahili. Luna: I will. Thanks for this episode, Lucas. This is really useful. Lucas: You're welcome. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Luna: Kwa heri!
