Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 8/4: Marathon Red Zone Day, WR/RB Standouts, OL Juggling Continues, Full Day 10 Recap
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: The Patriots are back on the practice fields on Monday
- 0:03Speaker 1: and spend a large amount of time inside the red zone.
- 0:06Speaker 1: How they do, We're gonna break it down for you.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome everybody to the Patriots training camp cast. And after
- 0:18Speaker 1: two days off, the Patriots are back on the practice
- 0:21Speaker 1: fields today, back in pads, long sessions, spent most of
- 0:24Speaker 1: their time in the red zone pall and just to
- 0:26Speaker 1: set it up, I would say, felt like Drake may
- 0:28Speaker 1: the offense got off to a good start early and
- 0:30Speaker 1: seven on seven and some of the early high red
- 0:32Speaker 1: zone periods, but later in the day felt like the
- 0:35Speaker 1: defense won things.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I would largely agree with your assessment. A lot of reps,
- 0:39Speaker 2: a lot of they got a lot of plays in today,
- 0:41Speaker 2: a lot of situational plays starting from you know, around
- 0:44Speaker 2: the twenty five at one point late in the game,
- 0:46Speaker 2: late game situations they closed practice with, and then they
- 0:50Speaker 2: went all the way on to the low red zone
- 0:52Speaker 2: with various situations down in distance. So I think they've
- 0:55Speaker 2: got a lot of work done. But I would agree
- 0:56Speaker 2: with you. And DJ James was one guy in particular,
- 1:00Speaker 2: I thought he really flashed that first day when he
- 1:02Speaker 2: was with the you in with Alex Austin with Gonzo
- 1:06Speaker 2: out in, Carlton Davis out, but I thought he kind
- 1:09Speaker 2: of flattened out a little bit the last couple of days.
- 1:11Speaker 2: He was right back there today, including one rep against
- 1:13Speaker 2: Stefan Diggs which really caught my eye. Not an easy
- 1:17Speaker 2: guy to keep track of, even in the red zone.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I'd agree with that. I thought when the
- 1:20Speaker 3: offense was in the high red zoner right outside the
- 1:23Speaker 3: red zone, they were able to make some bigger plays
- 1:26Speaker 3: down the field, with Trevon Henderson highlighting the practice with
- 1:30Speaker 3: two big plays on linebackers in coverage, so when they
- 1:33Speaker 3: were outside it and they could throw it in from
- 1:35Speaker 3: like the twenty or twenty five. I thought the offense
- 1:38Speaker 3: found some success early on in the practice, but then
- 1:40Speaker 3: when they moved into the low red zone portion inside
- 1:43Speaker 3: the ten yard line, the coverage, like Paul said, really
- 1:46Speaker 3: tightened up and DJ James had multiple good reps against
- 1:50Speaker 3: frontline players digs Kyle Williams, Kishan Boody. So it was
- 1:55Speaker 3: a back and forth which is always good to see,
- 1:56Speaker 3: but the defense seemed to win that later portion of
- 1:59Speaker 3: practice definitely.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Other back and forth they let's highlight though the final
- 2:01Speaker 1: play of practice it was a fourth down content the
- 2:04Speaker 1: fourth about four yard line. Drake put it up, targeting
- 2:08Speaker 1: Kayshawan Boody, DJ James Titan coverage. Nobody knows for sure
- 2:12Speaker 1: if he got both feet down. I think everybody said
- 2:14Speaker 1: he caught the ball. We still don't know. It was
- 2:16Speaker 1: one of those bang bang got to have it plays.
- 2:17Speaker 1: But overall, I think it highlighted just the level of
- 2:20Speaker 1: competitiveness that continues to permeate through this camp. You know,
- 2:24Speaker 1: one more player, Paul I Gotta I have to highlights
- 2:26Speaker 1: Javon Baker. We've talked a little bit about him playing
- 2:28Speaker 1: mostly with the second team, but at one period in
- 2:31Speaker 1: seven on seven where he had I think three straight
- 2:33Speaker 1: touchdown catches from Josh Dobbs. Also had a nice catch
- 2:36Speaker 1: in eleven Eleven's had to drop though I guess got
- 2:38Speaker 1: punched out of him later on another drive. So Javon
- 2:41Speaker 1: Baker maybe a little bit behind the front line guys,
- 2:44Speaker 1: but he seems like he's putting together a little bit
- 2:46Speaker 1: of it.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Maybe got a little bit of a push. I would
- 2:47Speaker 2: say he's been more active the last two or three
- 2:49Speaker 2: times we've seen practice than he had been previously. But
- 2:52Speaker 2: the you know, the one that that I kind of
- 2:55Speaker 2: take away allowing that one on the back line of
- 2:57Speaker 2: the end zone under the goal post knocked out. I
- 3:00Speaker 2: think the play probably would have been a sack anyway,
- 3:03Speaker 2: but that's of no consequence to the receiver catch the
- 3:06Speaker 2: ball if the ball is thrown to you. But I
- 3:08Speaker 2: do think he made some plays today. He looked like
- 3:10Speaker 2: he had a little swagger to it as well during
- 3:13Speaker 2: that hat trick that you talked about in the seven
- 3:16Speaker 2: on seven. Yeah, so let's see this. I don't think
- 3:20Speaker 2: that anyone is really emerged beyond the guys that we've
- 3:23Speaker 2: been talking a lot about. You know, Diggs is clearly
- 3:25Speaker 2: in a different class, and I think to Mario Douglas
- 3:28Speaker 2: has separated himself. Kaishan Boody continues to I think impress
- 3:32Speaker 2: And that play that you were talking about, it was
- 3:34Speaker 2: I think a fourth and three with about seventeen seconds
- 3:37Speaker 2: to go. Matt grow was on the sideline standing right there.
- 3:41Speaker 2: He called it a touchdown. Pretty much everybody else was
- 3:45Speaker 2: saying no good. I never really caught Rabel because Rabel
- 3:48Speaker 2: was making a lot of the calls. I don't know
- 3:49Speaker 2: if you guys could. Rabel was making a lot of
- 3:52Speaker 2: calls on some of the disputed plays along the side,
- 3:54Speaker 2: and he definitely caught the ball. We had a really
- 3:56Speaker 2: good look at it, but it was tough to tell
- 3:58Speaker 2: if you got the two feet in. Macro said he
- 4:00Speaker 2: did great catch by booty either way, I mean it
- 4:02Speaker 2: was an unbelievable catch.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a got to have it. It was
- 4:05Speaker 3: kind of a heave by Drake May into contested window.
- 4:08Speaker 3: But Kasehan Boody, I thought we both kind of felt
- 4:11Speaker 3: like Deuce we were watching practice together, that he got
- 4:13Speaker 3: both feet and bounds and probably caught the ball, but
- 4:16Speaker 3: he would have needed to replay in the refs on
- 4:18Speaker 3: hand to the command center back in New York to
- 4:20Speaker 3: go ahead and look at that. But uh, glad you
- 4:22Speaker 3: mentioned Javon Baker because I just continue to feel like
- 4:26Speaker 3: his skill set is different than the other guys that
- 4:30Speaker 3: have been repping out on the field so far. Kyle
- 4:33Speaker 3: Williams a little smaller speed receiver plays on the outside
- 4:36Speaker 3: booty not quite the athletic specimen that Baker is. So
- 4:41Speaker 3: I just I look at Javon Baker and I see
- 4:44Speaker 3: that back shoulder fade that he caught from Josh Dobbs
- 4:46Speaker 3: early on in practice, and his ability to go up
- 4:49Speaker 3: and get the ball outside his frame and adjust to
- 4:51Speaker 3: it and box another defender out, and those types of
- 4:54Speaker 3: things are maybe just a little bit different than some
- 4:57Speaker 3: of the other X receiver options that they have. So
- 4:59Speaker 3: I agree. I think he's making a little bit of
- 5:01Speaker 3: a push here, and I'm curious to see if he
- 5:03Speaker 3: starts to get some reps with Drake May and the ones.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah, let's do a Kicker update, Paul. It was eight
- 5:09Speaker 1: kicks today and I think all eight of them went through.
- 5:12Speaker 1: We thought they were all good. You confirmed from your
- 5:14Speaker 1: perch and you thought they look pretty good.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean my perch for whatever it's worth. But yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 2: I thought in the stadium. I made a mentioned that
- 5:22Speaker 2: late in our podcast Friday night that I thought that
- 5:24Speaker 2: was a strong night for the Kickers. I think they
- 5:26Speaker 2: took that into today's practice because you know, I've sort
- 5:30Speaker 2: of been nitpicky a little bit about even some of
- 5:32Speaker 2: the makes haven't looked great. Well, that hasn't been the
- 5:34Speaker 2: case now for two or three practices. Today I thought
- 5:37Speaker 2: they went both of them are perfect, four for four
- 5:40Speaker 2: and they all look to be right down the middle.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I mean, there was no doubt in my view about
- 5:45Speaker 2: any of them, and they're continuing to stretch out the
- 5:47Speaker 2: distance too. It's usually ends in around fifty to fifty
- 5:50Speaker 2: two yards, so not like they're all just making chip shots.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Yeah, it was an extremely close competition at this point.
- 5:57Speaker 3: And I know some people hear that and say, oh,
- 5:59Speaker 3: it was a sack round pick, like you would want
- 6:01Speaker 3: the sixth round pick to beat out Parker Romo. But
- 6:04Speaker 3: this isn't like they're both like been men like one
- 6:07Speaker 3: guy is just this is both guys have just been
- 6:09Speaker 3: nails like for like multiple practices at this point.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I think Mike said at the beginning of practice sometimes
- 6:15Speaker 2: they're both nineteen for twenty one going in, so do
- 6:17Speaker 2: the math. It's what twenty three for twenty five at
- 6:20Speaker 2: this point. Yeah, I think it's a good problem to have.
- 6:23Speaker 2: You have two options and both guys seem to be
- 6:25Speaker 2: kicking well.
- 6:26Speaker 3: I do wonder if it comes down to little things
- 6:29Speaker 3: like kickoffs and like you know, some of the other
- 6:31Speaker 3: minutia that goes into kicking that maybe it comes down
- 6:35Speaker 3: to in the end, because both guys have been accurate,
- 6:37Speaker 3: so it's not an accuracy thing, but maybe you know,
- 6:40Speaker 3: one has a little bit more leg or one's a
- 6:41Speaker 3: little bit better on the kickoffs, or whatever the case
- 6:43Speaker 3: may be.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Let's get through some housekeeping stuff. Two days off, Yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 1: had a couple guys return. Gret Bradberry was back there
- 6:50Speaker 1: at center, right back into that top center spot. Antonio Gibson,
- 6:53Speaker 1: who had missed a practice or two, he was out
- 6:56Speaker 1: back out there. Mike Fabel saying before practice that kender
- 7:00Speaker 1: Porn got rolled up on in the scrimmage. We saw
- 7:02Speaker 1: him leave Friday night. He was not out there. Carlton
- 7:05Speaker 1: Davis was out there, continues to kind of do some
- 7:08Speaker 1: warm ups and then doesn't really participate in He went
- 7:10Speaker 1: down the lower periods. Yeah, and Fanarian Low last remaining
- 7:14Speaker 1: guy off the pew p list, so he was out
- 7:16Speaker 1: there participating as well. The one that was kind of
- 7:18Speaker 1: a bummer though for I think all of us, Hey Levon,
- 7:21Speaker 1: Chase On not out there. I'd seen something late when
- 7:23Speaker 1: I was going back through Twitter on Friday night that
- 7:25Speaker 1: somebody said he left. I did not see that Friday night,
- 7:28Speaker 1: but he was not out there either. He's had a
- 7:30Speaker 1: great camp. That's one of those disappointing ones where a
- 7:32Speaker 1: guy seems like he's putting good days together and then
- 7:34Speaker 1: he seems to get injured.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I I cautioned to read too much
- 7:37Speaker 2: into these. I know my colleagues liked to do this,
- 7:40Speaker 2: but I did see him out there, and to me,
- 7:42Speaker 2: that's sometimes and up, you know, and sort of an
- 7:46Speaker 2: indication that it's not overly serious. He's out there, he's
- 7:49Speaker 2: not necessarily rehabbing the whole time. He was out on
- 7:52Speaker 2: the practice fields, at least late in the practice I
- 7:54Speaker 2: saw him. So yeah, hopefully it's not something I'll keep
- 7:57Speaker 2: himut too long. I agree with you. I think he's
- 7:58Speaker 2: had a great camp.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Two more things touch on ev here. A couple guys
- 8:01Speaker 1: work harded off today, Jacquel and Roy, as well as
- 8:04Speaker 1: Marcellus Dial who was down for a little while. Unfortunate
- 8:06Speaker 1: for him. He's had a pretty good camp. We did
- 8:09Speaker 1: see Morgan Moses left about I don't know, three quarters
- 8:13Speaker 1: of the way through practice. Hard to tell if that
- 8:14Speaker 1: has to do with the pitch count that he's been on,
- 8:17Speaker 1: but either way, it opened up an opportunity suddenly Marcus Bryant,
- 8:21Speaker 1: the rookie they're at right tackle, getting some snaps with
- 8:24Speaker 1: the first team towards the end. I don't know exactly
- 8:26Speaker 1: what that means, but that's a little bit of a
- 8:28Speaker 1: new twist on the offensive line.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Yeah, let's keep it on that because that's the positive
- 8:32Speaker 3: to take away. The negative is there's been some injuries
- 8:35Speaker 3: and I and look this day and age in the NFL,
- 8:38Speaker 3: some of these things, they're just bumps and bruises that
- 8:40Speaker 3: they are careful with some of the veteran players, you know,
- 8:43Speaker 3: Morgan Moses, for example, Carton Davis who's around and is
- 8:47Speaker 3: doing some warm ups and doing some individual and then
- 8:49Speaker 3: kind of going and rehabbing. So like, I'm not overly
- 8:53Speaker 3: worried about you know, those guys, Gonzo, Like, I think
- 8:56Speaker 3: those guys are on a plan and there's something you
- 8:59Speaker 3: know to that. But Marcus Bryant, you mentioned him the
- 9:02Speaker 3: first day that I've seen him take reps at right
- 9:05Speaker 3: tackle with the ones over Tray Jacobs as the top
- 9:08Speaker 3: backup to Morgan Moses there at right tackle. No disrespect
- 9:13Speaker 3: whatsoever to Tray Jacobs, but that's a draft pick that
- 9:16Speaker 3: you just used in the seventh round on a really
- 9:17Speaker 3: toolsy tackles, A big, tall, a really good athlete played
- 9:22Speaker 3: left tackle at Missouri opposite of armand Membu who went
- 9:25Speaker 3: in the first round and played right tackle. So if
- 9:27Speaker 3: Marcus Brian makes a push here and ends up being
- 9:30Speaker 3: your third tackle, I think that's a positive development. A
- 9:33Speaker 3: lot like Will Campbell and Jared Wilson starting would be
- 9:36Speaker 3: a positive development. You're trying to raise the floor of
- 9:39Speaker 3: that room and raise the talent level of that room.
- 9:42Speaker 3: And if Marcus Bryant's a little bit better than Trey
- 9:45Speaker 3: Jacobs are a little bit better than Vederian Lowe as
- 9:47Speaker 3: your swing tackle, that's a positive. And we know he
- 9:50Speaker 3: can play the left side because he did it in college,
- 9:52Speaker 3: so if he can flip back and forth another positive.
- 9:55Speaker 1: All right, well, we're going to gear up for joint
- 9:57Speaker 1: practices on Wednesday, probably a walk through tomorrow. They set
- 10:00Speaker 1: the stage for that. If you're around though, If you're
- 10:02Speaker 1: able to make it down here for joint practice, it's
- 10:04Speaker 1: definitely recommend it. But if not, you can tune into
- 10:06Speaker 1: Patriots on Filtered. We'll be live from training camp and
- 10:08Speaker 1: if you can't listen to that, tune into the campcast.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Right after we'll break down the full joint practice and
- 10:13Speaker 1: everything that went down, so we'll see you then.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
