- 0:19Speaker 1: Monday.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Everybody, Welcome to the Seat O'Connell Show on ESPN seven
- 0:26Speaker 2: ninety two one FM. We are oh so close to
- 0:30Speaker 2: the beginning of a college football season that to be fair,
- 0:35Speaker 2: it's gonna be a little bit nutty.
- 0:37Speaker 1: It's gonna be a little bit crazy.
- 0:40Speaker 2: The uh Protect College Sports Act that we thought was
- 0:43Speaker 2: gonna bail us out from some of this nuclear arms
- 0:47Speaker 2: race of increase spending maybe has died on the vine
- 0:52Speaker 2: a little bit. Injunctions and temporary restraining orders and all
- 0:57Speaker 2: of that. The billable hours winning the day yet again,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and it's going to be a sincere relief to be
- 1:05Speaker 2: able to just put all that to the side.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And talk about actual football.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It is a game week week zero for a lot
- 1:16Speaker 2: of teams around the country. The one of the more
- 1:20Speaker 2: interesting non conference preseason type games in the Big Twelve
- 1:25Speaker 2: will take place this weekend, bright and early ten am,
- 1:30Speaker 2: Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland, North Carolina TCU. That again, that's
- 1:37Speaker 2: a fascinating game for the sake of the Big twelve
- 1:40Speaker 2: conferences standing relative especially to the ACC, but to the
- 1:48Speaker 2: other power leagues. Really, the one that you have to
- 1:51Speaker 2: beat and have to establish yourself over is the ACC.
- 1:56Speaker 2: If this were TCU versus Iowa and TCU beat Iowa,
- 2:01Speaker 2: there's not a person on the planet who's gonna say, oh, Okay,
- 2:05Speaker 2: the Big twelve is better than the Big Ten. In fact,
- 2:09Speaker 2: the Big Ten the Big Ten could lose every non
- 2:12Speaker 2: conference game and bowl game to the Big Twelve this year,
- 2:16Speaker 2: and no one is gonna come away with the conclusion
- 2:18Speaker 2: that the Big twelve is better than the Big Ten,
- 2:20Speaker 2: just because of the way that we are so stubborn
- 2:23Speaker 2: and moving off of established opinion. At the end of
- 2:26Speaker 2: the day, though, you can firmly establish yourself as the
- 2:30Speaker 2: number three league in the country by winning games like
- 2:34Speaker 2: this one. TCU obviously has the added intrigue of it
- 2:38Speaker 2: being a North Carolina team that is coached by Bill Belichick,
- 2:41Speaker 2: at least for now. San Jose State, USC, North Carolina State, Virginia,
- 2:51Speaker 2: Jacksonville State, North Dakota State, Sacks State, Eastern Michigan, Hawaii
- 2:57Speaker 2: versus Stanford Hawaii coming to the mainland for that one.
- 3:00Speaker 2: New Mexico State, Florida State, Memphis UNLB your week zero games, then,
- 3:05Speaker 2: of course, nine days from today you've got Idaho at
- 3:10Speaker 2: rice Eco Stadium, as Utah will be one of two
- 3:14Speaker 2: preseason ranked teams playing a Thursday nighter in Week one.
- 3:19Speaker 2: That'll be September third. The nighttime slate is really capped
- 3:28Speaker 2: off by Utah, and I guess there's some of you
- 3:30Speaker 2: out there who might also care about UAB versus Illinois.
- 3:34Speaker 2: But and then of course Friday you've got games, Saturday,
- 3:40Speaker 2: you've got games, Sunday you've got three games.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Monday you've got a game. I like that. College football
- 3:50Speaker 1: does this.
- 3:51Speaker 2: No, I love Actually the college football does this before
- 3:54Speaker 2: the NFL kicks off its regular season. College football is
- 3:58Speaker 2: just like, let's just jam pack the weekend. Let's go Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
- 4:04Speaker 2: and we'll even sneak one in on Monday night. That'll
- 4:06Speaker 2: be SMU, a ranked SMU team on the road against
- 4:09Speaker 2: Florida State. We'll obviously be talking about all of these
- 4:12Speaker 2: games up and down. Lee Sterling is going to be
- 4:14Speaker 2: joining us throughout the year to talk to betting odds
- 4:17Speaker 2: on some of these games.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Jeff Schwartz obviously takes special interest.
- 4:21Speaker 2: In the odds and the wagering and things like that,
- 4:24Speaker 2: so we'll get to it with those guys on today's show.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Ari Temkin is going to join us in about half
- 4:30Speaker 2: an hour. Alicten to Eric Elica di Rico is the
- 4:37Speaker 2: Utah volleyball head coach, gonna hop on with us.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Zach Moss.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Is gonna swing by on the show today, and I
- 4:46Speaker 2: think by the time we have a conversation with Zach Moss,
- 4:49Speaker 2: we'll be able to talk about some interesting news regarding
- 4:54Speaker 2: Zach Moss. I'm awaiting, eagerly awaiting some junk mail an
- 4:59Speaker 2: official notice about certain things from the Utah football program,
- 5:04Speaker 2: but nothing as of yet. Yeah, Zach typically is gonna
- 5:10Speaker 2: be at least the plan for now. Typically is gonna
- 5:12Speaker 2: be at one on Mondays during the season. Today he's
- 5:16Speaker 2: moving to twelve thirty.
- 5:17Speaker 3: So we'll see if that news that you're teasing, OC,
- 5:22Speaker 3: you just got us all on the edge of our seats.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Hieball emoji, eyeboll emoji, vague posting.
- 5:27Speaker 3: We'll see if that's out. That official news is out
- 5:32Speaker 3: by twelve thirty when we talk with Zach, and we
- 5:34Speaker 3: could ask some questions about it. I know I have
- 5:37Speaker 3: an idea of what you're talking about because we've talked
- 5:39Speaker 3: about this OC. I'll just say UTS fans are gonna
- 5:43Speaker 3: really love it. Whenever it is made official something I
- 5:47Speaker 3: don't think people are gonna love.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I don't think people here in Utah are gonna love
- 5:51Speaker 2: maybe though maybe maybe there's some folks out there that
- 5:55Speaker 2: are okay with this stuff in the Utah fan base.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I think your opinion it would be heavily swayed by
- 6:01Speaker 2: whether or not Utah benefits from it. And there's no
- 6:03Speaker 2: indication that Utah is benefiting from this anytime soon. But
- 6:09Speaker 2: this is becoming problematic and trendy in college sports, where
- 6:15Speaker 2: guys who have their clup of coffee, their flirtation with
- 6:19Speaker 2: the professional leagues are now returning to college sports. And
- 6:25Speaker 2: the five years to play five eligibility ruling has complicated
- 6:29Speaker 2: this thing, and there's it was a basketball story for
- 6:34Speaker 2: the majority of the summer, and now it's becoming a
- 6:37Speaker 2: football story as and this one is the most specific
- 6:42Speaker 2: of examples. Pethamill and others reporting that former Old miss
- 6:47Speaker 2: tight end Dai Kwon Wright, who the Cleveland Browns picked
- 6:53Speaker 2: up and then put on waivers, instead of trying to
- 7:01Speaker 2: land with another NFL team, he is going to return
- 7:05Speaker 2: to college football and he's going to go to LSU
- 7:07Speaker 2: to play for his old coach from Old Miss Lane Kiffen.
- 7:13Speaker 2: As far as we know, this is the first player
- 7:15Speaker 2: to have an agreement to return to play college football
- 7:17Speaker 2: after signing with an NFL team as an undrafted free agent.
- 7:21Speaker 2: He actually signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was cut
- 7:25Speaker 2: by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was then claimed off waivers
- 7:28Speaker 2: on August eleventh, and he does not want to play
- 7:31Speaker 2: that waivers game anymore. He has been waived by the
- 7:34Speaker 2: Browns and look if already twice. I want to be forgiving.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I want to be understanding to the player, to the
- 7:42Speaker 2: person involved here. Right, if you're a guy who was
- 7:47Speaker 2: an excellent player in college football, it doesn't mean you're
- 7:50Speaker 2: going to be an NFL football player.
- 7:52Speaker 1: We know this, right, Some of the all.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Time great Utah football players, like some of the most
- 7:58Speaker 2: impactful guys that this team has had on big time
- 8:02Speaker 2: seasons and other seasons as well. But in big time seasons,
- 8:07Speaker 2: sometimes those guys that are great, great, great college football
- 8:11Speaker 2: players don't end up having lucrative and lucrative NFL careers.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Oftentimes it's you lack certain measurables. Sometimes you're just you know,
- 8:21Speaker 2: the victim of bad timing. I mean, there there are
- 8:24Speaker 2: Heisman Trophy winners from the past who have not had
- 8:28Speaker 2: NFL careers. Remember when Jason White at Oklahoma won the
- 8:34Speaker 2: Heisman Trophy.
- 8:36Speaker 3: I'll bet you a lot of our audience doesn't remember
- 8:39Speaker 3: that because the story that year was I believe in
- 8:44Speaker 3: undefeated Oklahoma team before the national championship. What undefeated are
- 8:47Speaker 3: one loss? The story that year was like this this
- 8:50Speaker 3: star freshman who's eaten up yards in the back out
- 8:54Speaker 3: of the backfield and Adrian Peterson. But Jason White had
- 8:57Speaker 3: incredible numbers and was on uh maybe an undefeated Oklahoma
- 9:02Speaker 3: team that looked like they were gonna win the national championship.
- 9:04Speaker 3: So yeah, I've bet a lot of people don't remember that.
- 9:07Speaker 3: That's an obscure one who obscure Heisman Trophy winner because
- 9:10Speaker 3: he didn't nothing notable after college. My guy Troy Smith
- 9:14Speaker 3: from Ohio State is another guy. He had one of
- 9:17Speaker 3: the most electric years I had seen up to that
- 9:20Speaker 3: point as a quarterback, especially at Ohio State, which is
- 9:24Speaker 3: not exactly has not exactly been quarterback you until I
- 9:27Speaker 3: guess sort of recently. He did nothing in the NFL.
- 9:33Speaker 3: He was I think a fifth round draft pick and
- 9:36Speaker 3: was like a third string quarterback for most of his career.
- 9:38Speaker 1: So there those guys happened every once in.
- 9:42Speaker 2: A while, Jason White got put on a Tennessee Titans
- 9:46Speaker 2: practice squad or sorry, got signed as like a rookie
- 9:50Speaker 2: tryout for the Tennessee Titans, and then cut and never
- 9:54Speaker 2: given another opportunity as a former Heisman Trophy winner. Right,
- 9:59Speaker 2: So I understand why Daikwon Wright and all these other
- 10:02Speaker 2: guys because there's you know, a couple dozen of them
- 10:05Speaker 2: now are looking at it, and they're saying, like, oh man,
- 10:08Speaker 2: I'm not going to stick to the NFL. Or I
- 10:11Speaker 2: already tried. I had my moment in the NFL and
- 10:14Speaker 2: it didn't work. I would really love to go back
- 10:17Speaker 2: and play another year of college football. And you're looking
- 10:20Speaker 2: at a situation now where the guys that are entering
- 10:24Speaker 2: college football today they have five years. You entered at
- 10:28Speaker 2: a time where you have four, and they're saying, wait,
- 10:32Speaker 2: I should get five. This kid who's eighteen years old
- 10:37Speaker 2: right now is going to get five. I'm twenty two
- 10:39Speaker 2: years old. I just finished I was on campus three
- 10:44Speaker 2: months ago. Give me a fifth year. Like, I understand
- 10:48Speaker 2: why they feel this way. The line that continues to
- 10:52Speaker 2: get blurred, and we continue to hope someone will draw
- 10:56Speaker 2: again and again and again and not blur it over
- 10:58Speaker 2: and over the line.
- 11:00Speaker 1: It has to be drawn somewhere.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I think that being in an NFL uniform or an
- 11:04Speaker 2: NBA uniform and then trying to come back and play
- 11:07Speaker 2: college sports, I think it's absurd.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I think it sucks. I think it's ridiculous.
- 11:11Speaker 2: I think it takes opportunities away from guys that are
- 11:13Speaker 2: already on teams, Guys that are trying to walk onto teams,
- 11:16Speaker 2: guys that are scholarship players on teams. I think that
- 11:19Speaker 2: at some point we have to say, you know what,
- 11:24Speaker 2: you've exhausted your eligibility under the rules set that you
- 11:28Speaker 2: agreed to.
- 11:30Speaker 1: You don't get to do this. But lawyers don't feel
- 11:34Speaker 1: that way.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Billible hours are undefeated, as I've talked about, And if
- 11:38Speaker 2: you're daykon Wright, you're probably like, yeah, dude, my coach
- 11:42Speaker 2: went from Ole Miss to LSU and he's calling me
- 11:44Speaker 2: and he's saying, I want you to come play for me,
- 11:48Speaker 2: and I'm gonna go make more money this year at
- 11:50Speaker 2: LSU than I would have made in the NFL because
- 11:53Speaker 2: I've already been given two pieces of evidence on my
- 11:56Speaker 2: NFL road that I am not the player I thought
- 11:59Speaker 2: I was. They hoped I was whatever. So I am
- 12:03Speaker 2: that dude in college football, I'm not that guy in
- 12:07Speaker 2: the NFL. The barrier to entry in the NFL is
- 12:12Speaker 2: a lot higher. As we're fully aware, we have seen
- 12:15Speaker 2: great Utah football players, great BYU football players, great national
- 12:22Speaker 2: level blue blood program football players like we just mentioned
- 12:26Speaker 2: with the Heisman Trophy winners that they can't get over
- 12:29Speaker 2: the NFL hump. If that NFL hump is standing in
- 12:33Speaker 2: your way, and you can either try to run up
- 12:36Speaker 2: it and climb over it and scrabble for some type
- 12:40Speaker 2: of like momentum or a practice squad spot, or you
- 12:44Speaker 2: can look back and there's a booster or a coach
- 12:48Speaker 2: or a program standing there with three hundred grand, five
- 12:52Speaker 2: hundred grand, seven hundred grand, You're just like, yeah, that.
- 12:57Speaker 1: That's a lot easier.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Also be on the field, I'll also be putting up
- 13:03Speaker 2: stats because I've been there before. I know what it
- 13:07Speaker 2: looks like, I know how to do it at the
- 13:10Speaker 2: college level.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Oh and guess what it also does. It increases the
- 13:14Speaker 1: likelihood that the next.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Time I take a swing on the NFL, they're going
- 13:18Speaker 2: to be like, oh, you know what, he actually improved
- 13:19Speaker 2: a little bit last year.
- 13:20Speaker 1: He's got another year of seasoning. Oh, look at another
- 13:22Speaker 1: year of production.
- 13:24Speaker 2: So for the players in this situation, and thankfully it's
- 13:27Speaker 2: not hundreds and hundreds of them, but for the players
- 13:30Speaker 2: in this situation, it actually makes an incredible amount of
- 13:33Speaker 2: sense that you would capitalize on this. We just had
- 13:39Speaker 2: somebody in studio I was talking to and I brought
- 13:43Speaker 2: up my guy, Steve Savoy.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I hope you're out there listening, boy, I love you.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Dog. Steve Savoy left the University of Utah too early
- 13:51Speaker 2: to try to pursue his NFL dream, and it made
- 13:54Speaker 2: sense for him at the time. Right school wasn't necessarily
- 13:58Speaker 2: his thing. He'd been an unbelieva college football player. He
- 14:03Speaker 2: could change the lives of himself and the people around
- 14:06Speaker 2: him by making it in the NFL. It made perfect
- 14:09Speaker 2: sense for somebody like that to take an early jump
- 14:12Speaker 2: while you still had eligibility. This is before the five
- 14:15Speaker 2: year thing, where you still had another year of eligibility.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I'm going to take a run at it back then
- 14:22Speaker 2: and every year before this year. If you made that
- 14:25Speaker 2: decision and it didn't work out, that was the end
- 14:28Speaker 2: of it. It didn't work out. As unfortunate as that is,
- 14:32Speaker 2: it didn't work out if Steve Savoy had the option
- 14:39Speaker 2: at that time of going and getting cut and waved
- 14:42Speaker 2: by a couple of NFL teams and then bouncing back
- 14:45Speaker 2: and playing at the University of Utah or at that
- 14:48Speaker 2: point the transfer portal. Right, if we're applying this new
- 14:52Speaker 2: rule set to that old team, right, all of the
- 14:55Speaker 2: Utah's great players from the Fiesta Bol team probably would
- 14:58Speaker 2: have been in the transfer portal.
- 15:00Speaker 3: How many of them that were not seniors, right, how
- 15:04Speaker 3: many of them would have followed Urban to Florida.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I mean, so many Urban would have taken.
- 15:10Speaker 2: As it stood, only two people followed him from the
- 15:13Speaker 2: University of Utah to Florida.
- 15:14Speaker 3: And that was the old transfer rule where you had
- 15:16Speaker 3: to sit out of you yes, right, unless you regret.
- 15:19Speaker 1: One of them was on the Utah team.
- 15:21Speaker 2: He was the backup long snapper, right, okay, And he
- 15:24Speaker 2: was on the Utah football team. Butcher shout out to
- 15:27Speaker 2: you because his parents had they were like friends with
- 15:30Speaker 2: the Myers or something like that, Okay, And he was like, Yeah,
- 15:33Speaker 2: I'm gonna I'm gonna go to Florida and he ended
- 15:36Speaker 2: up winning a national championship with that team. So he's
- 15:39Speaker 2: got a ring somewhere.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Good for you.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Butch Ryan Smith was the other guy, not Utah Jazz
- 15:44Speaker 2: owner Ryan Smith.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Wait.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Ryan Smith was a youth football player, freshman corner who
- 15:51Speaker 3: was like a freak athlete speed wise.
- 15:57Speaker 2: It was him and Weddell and we did speed school
- 16:00Speaker 2: in the offseason that you know, post Fiesta Bowl, getting
- 16:03Speaker 2: ready for Kyle Whittingham's first year.
- 16:05Speaker 1: The offseason conditioning program.
- 16:06Speaker 2: They did something in the early early mornings called speed
- 16:09Speaker 2: school and it was just you racing backpedals, you racing
- 16:15Speaker 2: uh you know, full ten yard sprint, twenty yard sprint,
- 16:18Speaker 2: forty yard sprint. You doing a race against other guys
- 16:22Speaker 2: in your position group in like the short shuttle and
- 16:25Speaker 2: things like that. And it was a battle to be
- 16:28Speaker 2: the fastest guy on the team. And it was Ryan
- 16:31Speaker 2: Smith or Eric Weddle, right, those were the two guys
- 16:34Speaker 2: that were going at it all the time. And Ryan
- 16:38Speaker 2: Smith was fast enough that everyone was like this guy
- 16:42Speaker 2: like well, obviously was so fast. He ended up playing
- 16:45Speaker 2: a trillion years in the NFL, maybe a Hall of
- 16:48Speaker 2: Fame career. Ryan Smith was somehow even though he was
- 16:51Speaker 2: like one hundred and sixty five pounds and had gigantic feet.
- 16:54Speaker 2: I think he had sized fourteen feet or something weird,
- 16:57Speaker 2: which would make some we make you think that guy
- 16:59Speaker 2: should be slow.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Under six feet. I think he was about six fasts
- 17:03Speaker 3: six feet.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Yeah, those feet.
- 17:05Speaker 2: He was freakishly fast, right, and he followed Urban to Florida.
- 17:09Speaker 2: I'm taller than that and have smaller feet. Yeah, that
- 17:12Speaker 2: is that is weird foot size. Okay, Anyway, I don't
- 17:16Speaker 2: know why I remember that about him, but he was
- 17:17Speaker 2: so fast that he was a great player, and he
- 17:19Speaker 2: followed Urban to Florida and he played on those Florida teams,
- 17:22Speaker 2: and he won a national championship also, but he was
- 17:25Speaker 2: willing to sit out the year under the at that time,
- 17:28Speaker 2: the current transfer rules.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Right, if these rules existed.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Where Utah football players, college football players from every generation
- 17:37Speaker 2: previous could have taken another crack at it after failing
- 17:41Speaker 2: in the NFL or after not quite sticking in the NFL,
- 17:45Speaker 2: it would have changed everything for those individuals like Joe Krueger.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Remember Paul Krueger's brother, Joe Krueger. He went to the
- 17:52Speaker 2: NFL too early. Joe Krueger made the jump to the NFL,
- 17:56Speaker 2: and it made sense. Big brother had been in the NFL.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Big brother had killed it in the NFL. So yeah,
- 18:02Speaker 2: I'm gonna do the same thing. I'm even bigger than
- 18:04Speaker 2: Paul Is. He's like six seven. He jumped to the
- 18:07Speaker 2: NFL too early. What would it look like? How much
- 18:10Speaker 2: it would would it change things for a guy like
- 18:12Speaker 2: that if he had gone to the NFL realized you
- 18:16Speaker 2: know what, this is not the right time, this is
- 18:18Speaker 2: not the right year for this, and bounce back to
- 18:21Speaker 2: college football and either gone into the transfer portal or
- 18:24Speaker 2: just put himself right back down on a Utah football roster.
- 18:28Speaker 2: It changes everything for the player. It makes an abundance
- 18:32Speaker 2: of sense. And this is the overall conflict that exists
- 18:37Speaker 2: right now. Because it makes sense for the player. The
- 18:41Speaker 2: lawyers say, well, if it makes sense for the individual player,
- 18:43Speaker 2: then by law we have to make it make sense
- 18:46Speaker 2: for the institution, for the team, for the organization. Those organizations,
- 18:51Speaker 2: those teams, those institutions should allow whatever makes sense for
- 18:55Speaker 2: the player. And this makes abundant sense for the player.
- 18:58Speaker 2: So now we're gonna make it makes sense for you LSU,
- 19:02Speaker 2: for you college football, for you whatever, and it just doesn't.
- 19:07Speaker 2: That's the unfortunate reality here.
- 19:10Speaker 4: I have a.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Thought about this oc as to a way to if
- 19:18Speaker 3: and when the Safe College Sports Act or whatever else
- 19:23Speaker 3: that finally draws these solid lines and we can finally
- 19:26Speaker 3: have some structure to these things in college football and
- 19:30Speaker 3: college athletics. You alluded to Jackson Coher playing NBA Summer
- 19:37Speaker 3: League with the Utah Jazz and now he's signed with
- 19:40Speaker 3: BYU to play basketball this season.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I personally.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Am not as against guys who played summer league and
- 19:53Speaker 3: that's all they played, being able if they have eligibility left,
- 19:56Speaker 3: being able to bounce back this situation with with LSU.
- 20:05Speaker 3: This guy played. This guy went all the way through
- 20:07Speaker 3: training camp. He went, He was part of preseason rosters,
- 20:13Speaker 3: like preseason is not summer league, like training camp is
- 20:16Speaker 3: pro or OTAs are probably the equivalent to summer league
- 20:20Speaker 3: an NFL offseason. Would you say, right, I wonder if
- 20:22Speaker 3: that should be like, Okay, you get a camp invite
- 20:29Speaker 3: and you get cut in camp. Okay, fine, you can
- 20:34Speaker 3: retain whatever eligibility you have due to the rule set
- 20:39Speaker 3: or someone got an injunction somewhere, which is what's happening
- 20:42Speaker 3: with this five for five for twenty twenty for class
- 20:44Speaker 3: of twenty twenty two. Fine, you are on a preseason
- 20:48Speaker 3: roster and then you get cut, sorry, like you're an
- 20:52Speaker 3: NFL player at that point.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I feel like that's just.
- 20:57Speaker 3: The NFL doesn't have that clear like exhibit contract that
- 21:02Speaker 3: only summer league guys sign in the NBA. I wonder
- 21:05Speaker 3: if that's something that ought to be adopted when we're
- 21:09Speaker 3: talking about this, If and when permanent rules ever get
- 21:14Speaker 3: set and they're ever enforceable, I don't know.
- 21:18Speaker 2: And I guess when I say right, I have a
- 21:21Speaker 2: bad tendency if I point out problems, but I don't
- 21:23Speaker 2: have viable solutions when I point out those problems. And
- 21:26Speaker 2: so when I say lines need to be drawn and
- 21:29Speaker 2: they need to be enforceable, and they need to be enforced,
- 21:32Speaker 2: I probably should tell you where I need that line
- 21:34Speaker 2: to be drawn. And I think that's what you're doing
- 21:36Speaker 2: here as you're saying, okay, OTAs are acceptable, but training
- 21:40Speaker 2: camp is not well, or even training camp, it's like
- 21:43Speaker 2: once we get to you're on a preseason roster whatever
- 21:46Speaker 2: or whatever, the most people agree to is the line.
- 21:50Speaker 2: But it's just there's certain things that are just camp, right,
- 21:54Speaker 2: that's just practice. You weren't really you're not really in
- 21:57Speaker 2: the NFL. You're just practicing with the team, right and me,
- 22:01Speaker 2: And technically you are. But when it comes to if
- 22:05Speaker 2: we're gonna I think that the logic of that a
- 22:08Speaker 2: lot of people do have a problem with, and I'm
- 22:10Speaker 2: fine with it. With the Hey, you played summer league
- 22:12Speaker 2: in the NBA, Like, okay, you didn't really play in
- 22:14Speaker 2: the NBA. I mean, I wonder what that is for
- 22:17Speaker 2: the NFL. Do summer league guys sign NBA contracts? They
- 22:20Speaker 2: sign what's called an exhibit ten contract, yes, which is
- 22:23Speaker 2: like ten day okay, summer so you're you're you make
- 22:27Speaker 2: an agreement to be a professional.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Yeah, And.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Maybe this is where the line is so muddy, because like,
- 22:36Speaker 2: once you become a professional, you don't get to be
- 22:40Speaker 2: an amateur anymore. But college athletes are not amateurs anyway
- 22:43Speaker 2: these days.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Yeah, So.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Maybe that's where we just need to get over this
- 22:49Speaker 2: and say, all right, the bounce back thing is going
- 22:51Speaker 2: to happen now in both leagues, and by the way,
- 22:55Speaker 2: it'll I guess happened somehow in Major League Baseball at
- 22:58Speaker 2: some point, and it'll hockey it'll happen in hockey, I
- 23:01Speaker 2: guess at some point, I think.
- 23:02Speaker 3: That would be like you sign a minor league deal
- 23:06Speaker 3: and then you spend you spend a few months in
- 23:11Speaker 3: the miners and you're like, oh, I am gonna be
- 23:13Speaker 3: here a while, yeah, and then you go, I could
- 23:17Speaker 3: go back to school, right, I still got a year
- 23:19Speaker 3: of village.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Which, by the way, that used to be a really
- 23:21Speaker 2: really difficult decision for baseball players because if you decided
- 23:26Speaker 2: you wanted to play college baseball, you were committing to
- 23:29Speaker 2: play for three years.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Basically, yeah, it was.
- 23:32Speaker 3: It was the NFL rule right where you have to play,
- 23:35Speaker 3: you have to stay three years in college if you're playing.
- 23:37Speaker 2: And then you were watching your own peers, guys that
- 23:40Speaker 2: you played on these travel teams with, these all star
- 23:42Speaker 2: teams with, and those guys were taking the minor league route,
- 23:45Speaker 2: and some of them are probably still in the minor
- 23:47Speaker 2: leagues fifteen years later, and some of them did their
- 23:50Speaker 2: five hundred at bats in the minors and then got
- 23:52Speaker 2: called up and you're just like, oh, crap, I'm sitting
- 23:55Speaker 2: here at Tennessee and that guy's playing for the Boston
- 23:59Speaker 2: Red Sox. Did I make the right decision here, right,
- 24:01Speaker 2: So baseball players have had to go through this. The
- 24:04Speaker 2: problem is, right, we are erasing and maybe it's not
- 24:08Speaker 2: a problem. I'm calling it a problem. Maybe it's not
- 24:10Speaker 2: a problem. The issue, I'll say is that we are
- 24:15Speaker 2: erasing the distinctions between good choices and bad choices. By
- 24:22Speaker 2: letting everybody take a mulligan on everything, we are completely
- 24:28Speaker 2: eliminating the trial and error process because you're not punished
- 24:32Speaker 2: at all for the error. And I just gave you
- 24:34Speaker 2: a couple of examples of guys that, like I wish
- 24:37Speaker 2: that they weren't punished for their error. Steve Savoy, I
- 24:42Speaker 2: wish that the error hadn't hurt his ability to make
- 24:47Speaker 2: a living playing football because he was good enough to
- 24:49Speaker 2: do so. He just went too early. I think the
- 24:53Speaker 2: same might be true of Joe Krueger right, and your
- 24:58Speaker 2: path right. All of us make these mistakes on our path, like, ah,
- 25:01Speaker 2: maybe I shouldn't have transferred, Maybe I should have stayed here,
- 25:04Speaker 2: Maybe I shouldn't have done that. Now all these guys
- 25:06Speaker 2: transfer every single year. We're the message that we are sending,
- 25:11Speaker 2: and this is where people are just like, okay enough.
- 25:14Speaker 2: The message that we are sending is that you can
- 25:16Speaker 2: just if you make the mistake, you can just do
- 25:19Speaker 2: it over again. You can you can have a do over. Oh,
- 25:22Speaker 2: you committed to the wrong school, no worries. In nine months,
- 25:26Speaker 2: you can transfer to a different school.
- 25:29Speaker 1: And that's probably good on one.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Level, but it's also probably a negative on another level,
- 25:35Speaker 2: just like it is in the real world with job changes,
- 25:38Speaker 2: just like it is in the real world, real world
- 25:40Speaker 2: with relationship changes. Just like it is in the real
- 25:43Speaker 2: world where you buy a house and crap, I should
- 25:45Speaker 2: have bought that other house. I turns out that other
- 25:48Speaker 2: neighborhood would have been better for my lifestyle or whatever.
- 25:51Speaker 2: And in college sports, like, you can't hit the reset
- 25:55Speaker 2: button quite so easily everywhere else, you can't get the
- 25:58Speaker 2: mulligan quite so easily everywhere else. And we are just
- 26:01Speaker 2: like offering unlimited mulligans to these people now to the
- 26:04Speaker 2: point where it's like it was already hard enough for
- 26:06Speaker 2: the traditionalist to swallow. Yeah, this kid can transfer. He
- 26:11Speaker 2: can go to Notre Dame out of high school, and
- 26:12Speaker 2: then it doesn't work at Notre Dame for whatever reason,
- 26:14Speaker 2: he can go to USC instead. And then if he
- 26:17Speaker 2: doesn't like USC, I guess he can go play for
- 26:21Speaker 2: UCLA across town. On it didn't work at UCLA, I
- 26:24Speaker 2: guess fine, he's gonna go play at Arizona State. Right,
- 26:28Speaker 2: that's hard enough for people to get on board with him,
- 26:30Speaker 2: to like, and now we're adding this, right, this guy's
- 26:34Speaker 2: he's going to play in the NFL.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Just kidding, He's not. He's coming back.
- 26:37Speaker 2: And I get this is a unique situation because somebody
- 26:40Speaker 2: waved a magic wand and granted an extra year of
- 26:43Speaker 2: eligibility to people who never thought they could have an
- 26:45Speaker 2: extra year of eligibility. And they're just like, wait, if
- 26:50Speaker 2: I hired the right lawyer and we go to the
- 26:52Speaker 2: right judge, I can come back to LSU, or I
- 26:55Speaker 2: can come back to Old miss or I can come
- 26:56Speaker 2: back to University of Utah and I can score ten
- 27:02Speaker 2: more touchdowns in college football and I can make you know,
- 27:06Speaker 2: one hundred to one point five whatever position I'm playing, Like, yeah,
- 27:11Speaker 2: let me do that right now. Daikwon Wright is the
- 27:15Speaker 2: guy who we know where he's going to end up.
- 27:17Speaker 6: Right.
- 27:17Speaker 1: There are.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Several other players who are currently in training camps in
- 27:23Speaker 2: the NFL, but they're also in the transfer portal on
- 27:26Speaker 2: a justin case basis. Xavian Harris, another former Lane Kiffin guy,
- 27:34Speaker 2: started twenty five games at Old Miss. He was waived
- 27:36Speaker 2: by the New Orleans Saints on August eighth. He is
- 27:39Speaker 2: in the transfer portal SMU running back played in the
- 27:42Speaker 2: Seattle Seahawks preseason opener. Was cut two four and forty
- 27:47Speaker 2: five yards twenty four touchdowns over four seasons at SMU.
- 27:52Speaker 2: He's now trying to go to UCLA. Anthony Hankerson from
- 27:59Speaker 2: Oregon State eight white at Williams junior from the Arizona Cardinals.
- 28:04Speaker 2: He played at Old Miss. Jack Pyburn at LSU had
- 28:09Speaker 2: three tackles in a preseason game. He's now trying to
- 28:12Speaker 2: go back and play college football. It's and by the way,
- 28:19Speaker 2: to use him as an example, sorry to single you out.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Jack.
- 28:24Speaker 2: He already played it three colleges. So at some point
- 28:32Speaker 2: the endless mulligans are gonna run out. Maybe, but it
- 28:41Speaker 2: does not appear that the NCAA has the enforceable authority
- 28:48Speaker 2: to stop this from happening.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Right now, and I'm gonna whisper a couple of things.
- 28:53Speaker 3: We're five days away from the start of college football
- 28:57Speaker 3: season with weeks hereo. We're ten days away from when
- 29:02Speaker 3: Utah starts in the twelve days from when the rest
- 29:04Speaker 3: of the country starts, right, yeah, okay, so let me
- 29:07Speaker 3: whisper this too.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Don't they have to register for school? They don't, did
- 29:12Speaker 1: They like, that's that's the thing that we don't care about.
- 29:16Speaker 3: They've talked to Marvin brought it up tongue in cheek,
- 29:18Speaker 3: just like I did on the Dan Patrick Show. It's like,
- 29:22Speaker 3: kid registered for school yet, and it's like, oh, yeah,
- 29:25Speaker 3: by the way, this is college athletics.
- 29:28Speaker 1: But that's the thing we decided a long time ago
- 29:30Speaker 1: we don't care about.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Yeah, the class is by far the least most important thing,
- 29:37Speaker 2: least most important, might I say that, the least important
- 29:39Speaker 2: thing in college athletics. We don't care about anyone's class load.
- 29:43Speaker 2: We don't, right, don't pretend you do. Don't pretend you
- 29:46Speaker 2: care about them getting your degree. You probably are like, oh, cool,
- 29:50Speaker 2: look you graduated. That's fun. Good to see. If they don't,
- 29:53Speaker 2: you don't actually care, don't pretend that you do. However,
- 29:57Speaker 2: you might care if they have graduated, not in the
- 30:01Speaker 2: literal academic viewpoint, but they've graduated on from college sports
- 30:06Speaker 2: into the NFL, and now they're just like, no, just kidding,
- 30:09Speaker 2: I'm going to come back. The NBA, By the way,
- 30:13Speaker 2: they did this in college sports years ago with a
- 30:18Speaker 2: four year eligibility clock in the NBA, where guys could
- 30:21Speaker 2: go explore the draft process. They could go explore, they
- 30:24Speaker 2: could dip their toes in the water, and if it
- 30:26Speaker 2: wasn't going to work out, they could come back.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:29Speaker 3: It used to be if you hired an agent, you
- 30:31Speaker 3: are a professional, you are no longer NCAA eligible. Then
- 30:35Speaker 3: they soften that by saying, Okay, you can hire an agent,
- 30:38Speaker 3: do some draft workouts, see what happens, come back.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Yeah, And that was always the right thing to do
- 30:44Speaker 2: for NFL football players or potential NFL football players too,
- 30:48Speaker 2: Like let people dip their toes in the water, figure
- 30:51Speaker 2: it out. Can this work out for me? The timing
- 30:54Speaker 2: is complicated for football coaches in that front because all
- 30:59Speaker 2: of that dipping in the waters while you're supposed to
- 31:01Speaker 2: be preparing at your college as well. But if you're
- 31:04Speaker 2: good enough to be a pro player, you could probably
- 31:07Speaker 2: compensate for mispractice time at the college level. It's just
- 31:10Speaker 2: a mess, and it's getting messier, and that is the problem.
- 31:15Speaker 2: We want more clarity, We want more enforcement.
- 31:18Speaker 1: We want more.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Consistency, and we're going the opposite way. We're sliding in
- 31:22Speaker 2: further and further into the chaos. And at the end
- 31:25Speaker 2: of the day, you as a Utah football season ticket holder,
- 31:29Speaker 2: you as a Utah football fan, you as a member
- 31:31Speaker 2: of the rock down at BYU, You're being asked to
- 31:34Speaker 2: just keep swallowing these things and accepting that these changes
- 31:38Speaker 2: are good for you and good for college football, and
- 31:41Speaker 2: they might not be, and at some point people are
- 31:44Speaker 2: going to start making a discernment about whether they want
- 31:48Speaker 2: to continue to be fans of this sport. You're not
- 31:51Speaker 2: going to lose me because it gives me more to
- 31:53Speaker 2: talk about on the show, even if it's stuff that
- 31:56Speaker 2: bothers me or annoys me.
- 31:58Speaker 1: It's content.
- 31:59Speaker 4: Right.
- 32:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna be a college sports fan until I can't
- 32:03Speaker 2: do this anymore. But if I'm the guy who's paying
- 32:08Speaker 2: forty five hundred dollars for my family to have season
- 32:10Speaker 2: tickets and now I gotta go play an LSU team
- 32:14Speaker 2: that has four former NFL players on it, I might
- 32:18Speaker 2: lose a little bit of luster here. We're just getting
- 32:23Speaker 2: started on a Monday. Ari Tempkin is gonna join us
- 32:26Speaker 2: next don't go anywhere. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on
- 32:29Speaker 2: ESPN seven hundred and ninety TWOEFM.
- 32:31Speaker 6: We need no.
- 32:36Speaker 7: You tuned to The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 32:39Speaker 7: Chevrolet Studio of ESPN seven hundred and ninety two to
- 32:42Speaker 7: one a half m.
- 32:50Speaker 6: Doll.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Well, come in our good friend Ari Temkin to talk
- 32:59Speaker 2: all things college football. Big twelve, little NFL sprinkled in.
- 33:04Speaker 2: All right, welcome again.
- 33:05Speaker 1: How are you, sir?
- 33:06Speaker 4: I'm great OC. How are you, buddy?
- 33:08Speaker 1: I'm doing all right.
- 33:10Speaker 2: So I think I'm starting to figure out the best
- 33:14Speaker 2: way for college coaches to maximize their roster. You gotta
- 33:18Speaker 2: have someone on the staff, like a GA or something
- 33:21Speaker 2: who's always got one eye on the transfer portal and
- 33:23Speaker 2: the potential transfer portal. And now you have to add
- 33:26Speaker 2: somebody who's watching NFL preseason games and figuring out who's
- 33:30Speaker 2: gonna get cut, and then you can be the first
- 33:33Speaker 2: one to grab that guy out of the NFL and
- 33:37Speaker 2: put him on your college football roster, because why not
- 33:41Speaker 2: make it even more chaotic? What are your thoughts on
- 33:43Speaker 2: this wave that I hope doesn't become a tsunami of
- 33:49Speaker 2: preseason NFL guys coming back and saying, no, I want
- 33:53Speaker 2: my fifty year of eligibility. I'm playing another season of
- 33:55Speaker 2: college football.
- 33:57Speaker 4: I mean, it seems very black and white, cut and dried, right, Like,
- 34:01Speaker 4: there's no confusion and ambiguity over any of this, right,
- 34:05Speaker 4: It's just totally obvious and easy, and I'm sure it's
- 34:09Speaker 4: really easy for people to figure out, you know, I mean,
- 34:11Speaker 4: it's unbelievable. You know, we've got the Colorado ruling, which
- 34:16Speaker 4: over the weekend was sort of invalidated, So anybody that
- 34:19Speaker 4: just you know, blanket twenty twenty two class is no
- 34:23Speaker 4: longer eligible. I sort of positioned it on my show
- 34:26Speaker 4: like this, and that is, you know, let's say that
- 34:32Speaker 4: they're handing out chocolate milk in your classroom, but then.
- 34:36Speaker 6: They decided you've already had too much.
- 34:37Speaker 4: You already had enough chocolate milk. But then there are
- 34:40Speaker 4: certain people within that class that went to a different
- 34:43Speaker 4: classroom to get chocolate milk. But the people that remain
- 34:46Speaker 4: in the same classroom are no longer getting the chocolate
- 34:48Speaker 4: milk because they already had enough chocolate milk. That's probably
- 34:51Speaker 4: the best metaphor I could possibly come up with, because
- 34:54Speaker 4: I feel like explaining it like a to a six
- 34:56Speaker 4: year old is pretty much the best explanation that I
- 34:58Speaker 4: would need.
- 35:00Speaker 2: It's absolutely crazy that we've reached this point in the
- 35:06Speaker 2: idiocracy of sports where NBA players, guys who played basketball
- 35:11Speaker 2: in an NBA uniform, whether it was in summer league
- 35:13Speaker 2: or not, are now back on college basketball rosters. And
- 35:17Speaker 2: the same appears to be happening in college football, where
- 35:20Speaker 2: you could have been in a preseason game, or at
- 35:22Speaker 2: least in a preseason camp, you could have put on
- 35:24Speaker 2: that Cleveland Brown's helmet or that Philadelphia Eagles helmet, and
- 35:29Speaker 2: now you're going to go back and be at LSU
- 35:32Speaker 2: or at Texas Tech or whatever.
- 35:34Speaker 1: I just I never thought we'd get here.
- 35:36Speaker 4: Ari, I mean truly, you know, and you know, look,
- 35:42Speaker 4: I think in some ways it's interesting the way that
- 35:45Speaker 4: the sort of talent school has gotten deeper, and you know,
- 35:50Speaker 4: I mean it really comes down to money and resources,
- 35:53Speaker 4: right Like, the industries that have the most money tied
- 35:56Speaker 4: to it will be mostly competitive because people want to
- 35:59Speaker 4: access to that money. And so you know, we're seeing
- 36:01Speaker 4: that within basketball, right like, where before guys believe college
- 36:06Speaker 4: to go play and any you know, any part where
- 36:09Speaker 4: they could to get paid to play in basketball, whether
- 36:11Speaker 4: it was in the G League or internationally. You know,
- 36:14Speaker 4: they would just take the first you know plan they
- 36:16Speaker 4: could and do that. And you know, now, because college
- 36:20Speaker 4: is competitive in terms of what they're paying in the
- 36:23Speaker 4: international game against G League teams, you know, suddenly the
- 36:26Speaker 4: arithmetic is a lot different. And you know, it's funny
- 36:29Speaker 4: because I've been talking to some of my friends that
- 36:31Speaker 4: are are former you know, college athletes or professional players,
- 36:35Speaker 4: and you know, it's like so many of them are like,
- 36:37Speaker 4: I just can't believe the ego would kind of allow
- 36:39Speaker 4: you to do that. You know, you feel like you
- 36:41Speaker 4: get to the NFL, like that was the dream, and
- 36:43Speaker 4: even though you know you're still fighting for survival, you
- 36:46Speaker 4: just want to keep fighting for that as opposed to
- 36:48Speaker 4: going backwards one step. And so it is in some ways,
- 36:52Speaker 4: it shows how much I think just the dynamic, like
- 36:55Speaker 4: the internal competitiveness of some of these players have changed.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Everybody.
- 37:01Speaker 2: I know, all of my buddies from the old days,
- 37:04Speaker 2: we've all had a dream at some point, like a
- 37:08Speaker 2: literal sleeping dream where you dream that you're back in
- 37:11Speaker 2: your high school football uniform, and you have like a
- 37:15Speaker 2: weird in the dream guilt trip about the fact that
- 37:17Speaker 2: you know you're not supposed to be there, that you
- 37:20Speaker 2: graduated already and you're not supposed to be playing, and
- 37:24Speaker 2: of course you know it's just a dream. But then
- 37:27Speaker 2: you wake up and there's a certain amount of like
- 37:30Speaker 2: shame involved where you laugh at yourself just like, oh,
- 37:32Speaker 2: I guess I really pequed in high school and I
- 37:34Speaker 2: want to go back there on some subconscious level. And
- 37:39Speaker 2: now we're watching it happen in college football.
- 37:42Speaker 4: Well, and I mean I also like I can't imagine
- 37:45Speaker 4: what the like the team dynamics, So like, let's just
- 37:49Speaker 4: play this out here, because this impacts the NFL in
- 37:53Speaker 4: a big way where you've got guys that are kind
- 37:55Speaker 4: of one foot in, one foot out. But like think
- 37:58Speaker 4: about practice squads, you know, where whereas this is the
- 38:00Speaker 4: time of year where guys, you know, if they weren't
- 38:03Speaker 4: going to make the roster, they were positioning themselves for
- 38:05Speaker 4: a practice squad spot. And you know the reality is
- 38:08Speaker 4: a lot of undrafted free agents are going to end
- 38:10Speaker 4: up on practice squads, you know, and what you do
- 38:13Speaker 4: with that is just based on how much work you
- 38:15Speaker 4: put in and what the organization thinks about you. But
- 38:18Speaker 4: over time, like you can find yourself in an active roster.
- 38:20Speaker 4: It happens for a lot of guys, but it starts
- 38:22Speaker 4: the practice squad and you know, what you can make
- 38:24Speaker 4: there is you know, low six figures for a practice
- 38:28Speaker 4: squad spot, depending on how long you've been in a
- 38:29Speaker 4: league on tw hundred thousand, three hundred thousand. Now, now
- 38:32Speaker 4: these guys go back to college. You know they're going
- 38:35Speaker 4: to most of them are going to be at the
- 38:36Speaker 4: top level of the salary base. So you know, it's
- 38:40Speaker 4: it's it's an easy math problem. They're going to make
- 38:42Speaker 4: more money going back to college than they want the
- 38:44Speaker 4: practice squad. So what does the NFL do to react
- 38:47Speaker 4: as in reaction to it, because they want their feeder
- 38:49Speaker 4: system with the practice squad to be intact and they
- 38:51Speaker 4: don't want to lose a ton of you know, the
- 38:53Speaker 4: talent pool that they have there. And then you know,
- 38:56Speaker 4: so how do they disincentivize that from losing players? And
- 38:59Speaker 4: then on the other side, I mean, the train has
- 39:01Speaker 4: left the station for these rosters. You know, how are
- 39:04Speaker 4: they positioned themselves as players to get back on these rosters,
- 39:08Speaker 4: you know, and again it's important to point out that
- 39:09Speaker 4: like the blank at twenty twenty two class that that
- 39:12Speaker 4: has been stayed by the appeals court, So you know,
- 39:17Speaker 4: no longer are is every twenty twenty two athlete now eligible?
- 39:21Speaker 4: But if you got eligibility from a different state, and
- 39:23Speaker 4: there's you know, Texas and Kentucky and Louisiana and many
- 39:27Speaker 4: other states involved here, you know, like Thomas Castellanos, who's
- 39:32Speaker 4: you know, who looks to be going to Texas Tech.
- 39:34Speaker 4: Now he's part of the Kentucky ruling, so you know
- 39:37Speaker 4: he could still he's still eligible based upon a court
- 39:41Speaker 4: whereas you know, everybody else that just has that blanket
- 39:44Speaker 4: twenty twenty two clearance is not eligible. So it is
- 39:46Speaker 4: again extraordinarily confusing.
- 39:51Speaker 1: It's very strange, and yet here we are. Okay, let's
- 39:55Speaker 1: I'm very excited.
- 39:56Speaker 2: It's week zero now, so we can actually talk about
- 39:58Speaker 2: at least one big twelve matchup. We can talk about
- 40:02Speaker 2: one game involving a big twelve team that is going
- 40:06Speaker 2: to get I think a little bit of a national attention.
- 40:09Speaker 2: North Carolina TCU a Viva Stadium in Dublin, give me
- 40:14Speaker 2: your keys in this one and how important is this
- 40:16Speaker 2: When we talk about the Big twelve, we always talked
- 40:18Speaker 2: about you got to establish yourself in bowl games, in
- 40:21Speaker 2: the non conference, You've got to set your level relative
- 40:24Speaker 2: to the other power For feels like there's a big
- 40:27Speaker 2: opportunity for TCU here to do just that.
- 40:30Speaker 4: Yeah, and in some ways it's kind of a lose
- 40:33Speaker 4: lose from a standpoint of you know, the expectation to
- 40:36Speaker 4: win this game is very high, you know, and so
- 40:39Speaker 4: to your point, like this loss here is almost like
- 40:43Speaker 4: two losses because of what it means to the conference.
- 40:46Speaker 4: Because TCU was expected to be towards the top of
- 40:48Speaker 4: the conference. North Carolina should be better, but there's still
- 40:51Speaker 4: going to be a bottom of the ACC type team.
- 40:54Speaker 4: You know. Bill Belichick, I think learned from some of
- 40:56Speaker 4: the mistakes he made in the portal last year and
- 40:59Speaker 4: made much larger commitment to the high school ranks. So
- 41:03Speaker 4: they've got some playmakers. They flipped a guy from A
- 41:05Speaker 4: and M who's a pass rusher. They got another guy
- 41:06Speaker 4: from Ohio State on the defensive line. They ended up
- 41:09Speaker 4: with double digit four star recruits. They've got one of
- 41:12Speaker 4: the I think it was top fifteen classes in the
- 41:15Speaker 4: country in terms of high school recruiting, and conversely, they
- 41:18Speaker 4: had like the sixty fourth rank transfitportal class, so the
- 41:21Speaker 4: majority of their talent is incoming freshmen. So this team
- 41:25Speaker 4: could be considerably will be considerably better from a talent perspective,
- 41:28Speaker 4: but might not win many more games than they did
- 41:30Speaker 4: last year because their schedule is way tougher this year
- 41:33Speaker 4: than it was last year. And look, there's also no
- 41:37Speaker 4: shortage of drama when it comes to North Carolina too,
- 41:39Speaker 4: and this has nothing to do with Bill Belichick's girlfriend.
- 41:42Speaker 4: There's Michael Lombardi, the drama with him, the GM who's
- 41:44Speaker 4: on indefinite leave based on some improprieties, and he's the
- 41:49Speaker 4: highest paid GM in college football. And then the bigger one,
- 41:52Speaker 4: I think is that Steve Belichick, Bill's son, the defensive coordinator,
- 41:57Speaker 4: was put on medical leave in early August, and you know,
- 42:01Speaker 4: the indication seems to be that he's not going to be,
- 42:03Speaker 4: you know, traveling with the team to Dublin. So you know,
- 42:05Speaker 4: it looks like Bill Belichick, who has not called a
- 42:07Speaker 4: defense at the college level, will be calling defensive plays,
- 42:11Speaker 4: which is not a far cry from what he's done
- 42:13Speaker 4: throughout his career. And he's been very good at it
- 42:14Speaker 4: and very successful at it. But that part it will
- 42:17Speaker 4: be interesting. I think this could be a low scoring game.
- 42:19Speaker 4: I think both teams defenses stand out. And again, you know,
- 42:22Speaker 4: tc sort of built itself, reimagined itself to be more
- 42:26Speaker 4: of a ground and pound offense, and so I think,
- 42:28Speaker 4: you know, that's what we'll see probably, you know, a
- 42:31Speaker 4: new team learning this new offense, playing a little bit
- 42:33Speaker 4: slower against the defense that has some talent. And you know,
- 42:36Speaker 4: I really think very highly of this TCU defense. It's
- 42:38Speaker 4: gonna be one of the best of the Big twelve.
- 42:40Speaker 2: TCU with some of its own drama in the locker
- 42:42Speaker 2: room after they dismissed Jacob Fields, who is a projected
- 42:45Speaker 2: starter on this team, or an assault that happened in
- 42:49Speaker 2: the locker room, I've trying to have been reading between
- 42:52Speaker 2: the lines and reading all the publication on this one,
- 42:55Speaker 2: because look, you can get away with a lot of
- 42:59Speaker 2: Tom Fooler and locker room and you can get away
- 43:01Speaker 2: with a fight with your teammate to a certain extent,
- 43:05Speaker 2: especially if you're a good player like Fields. Is uh there,
- 43:08Speaker 2: there's there's something that it feels to me like there's
- 43:12Speaker 2: something we haven't been told about the situation, even as
- 43:15Speaker 2: all the reporting has effort at giving us the full
- 43:18Speaker 2: truth on it. But I wanted your thoughts on well
- 43:21Speaker 2: two part, how big a loss is Jacob Field's on
- 43:24Speaker 2: the field, and of course, how big of an issue
- 43:28Speaker 2: is this for a TCU locker room that is now,
- 43:31Speaker 2: you know, a few days away from playing a game.
- 43:34Speaker 4: No, I mean, you're you're one hundred percent right. And
- 43:36Speaker 4: this was an aggravated assault charge, so it wasn't just assault.
- 43:39Speaker 4: It was you know, either assault with a weapon or
- 43:41Speaker 4: assault in an extreme manner. And you know, I haven't
- 43:45Speaker 4: heard any reporting in terms of the specifics, but you know,
- 43:48Speaker 4: a locker room fight that's ended with a kid in
- 43:51Speaker 4: the hospital and you know, so you've got to do
- 43:54Speaker 4: something if your sunny dyke' in the TCU program. And
- 43:57Speaker 4: obviously they did. I mean it's a huge void. They
- 43:59Speaker 4: brought and Field, who is the CODE defensive player of
- 44:02Speaker 4: the year in the conference to USA last year. You know,
- 44:04Speaker 4: really take that Bud Clark's spot after losing Clark. You know,
- 44:08Speaker 4: they're really good. They're arguably their best player on defense
- 44:11Speaker 4: is Jamal Johnson. But now they've got to figure out
- 44:13Speaker 4: who's going to play opposite him, and you know he
- 44:16Speaker 4: was he was supposed to be that guy. But yeah,
- 44:18Speaker 4: I mean, you get a guy that basically knocks out
- 44:21Speaker 4: another guy in the locker room and sends him to
- 44:23Speaker 4: the hospital. That's going to cause some some friction and
- 44:26Speaker 4: drama within the locker room. So you know, it is
- 44:30Speaker 4: a bizarre situation. And yeah, like you said, I mean,
- 44:33Speaker 4: this game is no shortage of internal drama and strife.
- 44:37Speaker 4: So we'll see because that is going to be the
- 44:38Speaker 4: one area of concern for this football team. On defense,
- 44:41Speaker 4: like their front seven is pretty stout. I think their
- 44:44Speaker 4: defensive line is one of the best in the Big twelve.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Jamal Johnson is one of the best, you know safeties
- 44:49Speaker 4: in the Big twelve. So you know they're ready to go.
- 44:51Speaker 4: But that was a big spot where they were expecting
- 44:53Speaker 4: Fields to be a major contributor and this is what
- 44:55Speaker 4: he does during fall camps. So the fallout is, you
- 44:58Speaker 4: know who he hit and is that player now going
- 45:00Speaker 4: to be out for an extended period of time and
- 45:01Speaker 4: how much depth will be tested there? And you know,
- 45:03Speaker 4: now what do they do at safety?
- 45:05Speaker 2: There's the other wrinkle to this where you know, according
- 45:08Speaker 2: to some to sources, hashtag sources Fields had, you know,
- 45:13Speaker 2: kind of asked for coaches to intervene with this whole
- 45:18Speaker 2: like tension between him and the easy Konma kid, the
- 45:21Speaker 2: receiver that ended up being the victim of the assault
- 45:24Speaker 2: or the alleged victim of the assault. And those same
- 45:28Speaker 2: sources were saying that Sunny Dyke's never really was given
- 45:31Speaker 2: a full understanding of how severe the tension between the
- 45:34Speaker 2: teammates was.
- 45:35Speaker 1: But head coaches typically don't have to intervene on that level.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Usually this is a GA slash position coach thing that
- 45:42Speaker 2: is like, hey, knock it off, you know, do your
- 45:45Speaker 2: talking on the field and then your teammates in the
- 45:47Speaker 2: locker room whatever. But there was that wrinkle to it
- 45:50Speaker 2: as well, that like there's maybe some negligence on at
- 45:53Speaker 2: least one member of the staff here. If if Fields
- 45:56Speaker 2: did indeed tell a coach like, hey man, this is
- 45:58Speaker 2: going to escalate if you don't get him to shut up,
- 46:01Speaker 2: or you don't get him off me, or whatever else
- 46:04Speaker 2: the coach's job. I mean, it's we're not talking about ari.
- 46:08Speaker 2: I'm preaching to the choir here. I realized that. But
- 46:10Speaker 2: we're not talking about something in springball. We're talking about
- 46:12Speaker 2: they got when this happened, they had a game in
- 46:15Speaker 2: ten days, So like maybe.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Sunny Dice has to address that with the coaching staff too.
- 46:21Speaker 1: I'm not sure.
- 46:23Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I mean it's a great point. And like
- 46:25Speaker 4: I also wonder, you know, it's one of those things
- 46:29Speaker 4: where if you're a coach, you know, did you see
- 46:31Speaker 4: certain warning signs? But did you not realize that those
- 46:34Speaker 4: were warning signs? Is this one of the negative drawbacks
- 46:38Speaker 4: of you know, a really expedited portal. You know, remember
- 46:42Speaker 4: there was only one portal this year, so instead of
- 46:45Speaker 4: you know, two to sort of go through spring and
- 46:48Speaker 4: then make some decisions where maybe this kid goes through
- 46:52Speaker 4: spring and starts to have some disagreement with some of
- 46:54Speaker 4: these other guys, you know, could he have entered the
- 46:56Speaker 4: portal and left, you know, I mean this could be
- 46:59Speaker 4: the result of just the one portal deal where you
- 47:03Speaker 4: had to furiously fill out your roster and you're not
- 47:06Speaker 4: really able to take into account what the chemistry could
- 47:08Speaker 4: could be within that. So I mean, I think it's
- 47:11Speaker 4: a great point in your part too. Also, like you know,
- 47:13Speaker 4: guys are getting after each other this time of year,
- 47:16Speaker 4: like they're sick and tired, of hitting each other's they
- 47:18Speaker 4: want to hit somebody else, and you know, how how
- 47:21Speaker 4: seriously do you take these sorts of things? Because I'm
- 47:24Speaker 4: sure in the past you may have as a coach
- 47:26Speaker 4: heard this, but did you realize did you not you know,
- 47:28Speaker 4: did that not escalate to this point? I would I
- 47:32Speaker 4: would imagine Sunny Dyke's is doing some sort of post
- 47:36Speaker 4: mortem here, because if not, then he's not doing his job.
- 47:40Speaker 4: His job is to evaluate what went wrong here and
- 47:43Speaker 4: how this got get such a bad point and the
- 47:46Speaker 4: chain of command, like what lagged because you know, serious
- 47:50Speaker 4: or unserious of a threat. You know, this leads to
- 47:53Speaker 4: a whole bunch of drama that you don't need right
- 47:55Speaker 4: before your season starts. And the situation that you know
- 47:59Speaker 4: is not is pretty unique, you know, within you your
- 48:03Speaker 4: set of circumstances here. I mean, there's obviously drama on,
- 48:06Speaker 4: there's fighting and stuff, but to like knock a guy
- 48:08Speaker 4: out cold and send him to the hospital.
- 48:11Speaker 1: And allegedly kick him in the head after he was
- 48:13Speaker 1: knocked out cold.
- 48:14Speaker 2: According to another source, that was I mean, that's crazy,
- 48:19Speaker 2: That's that's where the aggravated in the assault comes from.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Yeah, right, like you're you're trying to do more damage
- 48:25Speaker 4: than just you know, shut this guy up like you
- 48:27Speaker 4: are you this guy has bothered you to the point
- 48:30Speaker 4: where you are trying to kill him because that I
- 48:33Speaker 4: don't know how else to take those acts that happened.
- 48:36Speaker 4: And so yeah, I mean again, like football, it's intense.
- 48:40Speaker 4: There's a lot of guys that there's a lot of
- 48:42Speaker 4: s talking this time of year. You know, there's a
- 48:44Speaker 4: lot of new guys you're bringing in. You're trying to
- 48:46Speaker 4: infuse competition while you know, making sure that everything stays
- 48:50Speaker 4: above board. So I'm sure there's an element of like,
- 48:52Speaker 4: I didn't realize it was going to go this far,
- 48:53Speaker 4: but you've got to do a post morning after your
- 48:55Speaker 4: sunny dyke. So it's it's it's a complete breakdown within
- 48:58Speaker 4: your program, regardless of how culpable they are or aren't,
- 49:01Speaker 4: you know, I mean, this happens, and maybe there were
- 49:04Speaker 4: no warning signs, You're still culpable as a coach for
- 49:07Speaker 4: this being a part of your program.
- 49:11Speaker 1: We are, what nine days away from Utah kicking off
- 49:15Speaker 1: their season. Camp is done.
- 49:17Speaker 2: It's now game prep and game installing things like that
- 49:21Speaker 2: all around the Big Twelve Conference and here in Salt Lake.
- 49:23Speaker 2: We've talked about position battles that intrigue us if I
- 49:27Speaker 2: open it up to the whole conference. Is there a
- 49:29Speaker 2: position battle that you were paying close attention to for
- 49:32Speaker 2: any of the Big twelve teams this year because that
- 49:35Speaker 2: should be resolved.
- 49:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think you've got quarterback battles and
- 49:42Speaker 4: two spots. You know, it looks like Carter Bowlie will
- 49:45Speaker 4: be the starter in Arizona State, but we're not entirely
- 49:49Speaker 4: certain of that. And for a team that you know
- 49:51Speaker 4: should at least factor in the top half of the league,
- 49:54Speaker 4: you know, that's pretty significant. Kansas too, but I'm not
- 49:56Speaker 4: sure that you know they're going to factor into the
- 49:59Speaker 4: top half of the league. There's battles for left tackle
- 50:03Speaker 4: in some spots. You know. Obviously Utah's got battles along
- 50:06Speaker 4: their offensive line they're trying to figure out. So you know,
- 50:09Speaker 4: safety Texas Tech has a has a battle opposite Brendon
- 50:12Speaker 4: Jordan as their their other safety on defense. We just
- 50:15Speaker 4: talked about TCU Jamel Johnson and who the other safety
- 50:18Speaker 4: will be there with Jacob Fields out. So yeah, I
- 50:21Speaker 4: think there are some decent battles that rage on here.
- 50:24Speaker 4: And you know, I think with quarterback. That'll be a
- 50:26Speaker 4: really interesting one, especially with you know, last few seasons. Whoever,
- 50:31Speaker 4: there's been guys that were named starters that didn't make
- 50:34Speaker 4: it through a few games. There's injuries that will happen.
- 50:37Speaker 4: You know, we start with sixteen quarterbacks, I'm sure we'll
- 50:40Speaker 4: end up seeing you know, maybe twice as many of that,
- 50:43Speaker 4: you know, across the board. I mean, USCF played five quarterbacks,
- 50:46Speaker 4: had to start five different quarterbacks last year, So that'll
- 50:49Speaker 4: always be an interesting one to me too. As you
- 50:51Speaker 4: sort of survey the Big Twelve, it's also really interesting
- 50:54Speaker 4: to oc to see, you know, like I took a
- 50:57Speaker 4: look at seven different Bowld projections across likes ESPN, College
- 51:02Speaker 4: Football News, AFLON on three, you know, and just to
- 51:06Speaker 4: see the sort of variance of the beliefs of the
- 51:09Speaker 4: Big twelve. All seven that I looked at, zero of
- 51:13Speaker 4: seven had the Big Twelve with the top four seed,
- 51:16Speaker 4: but four of seven had the Big Twelve with two
- 51:19Speaker 4: playoff teams. In fact, Pete Futech had Utah finishing number
- 51:22Speaker 4: twelve but finishing outside the playoff because of that automatic
- 51:25Speaker 4: bid for the group of six. And then there was
- 51:28Speaker 4: one writer that had Utah not even playing in a
- 51:30Speaker 4: Bowl game. So it's interesting to see sort of the
- 51:33Speaker 4: discrepancies that some of these writers will have in terms
- 51:35Speaker 4: of Bull projections. The one other than Utah that was
- 51:38Speaker 4: really interesting in terms of the variants that some of
- 51:40Speaker 4: the writers had was that the two teams that went
- 51:43Speaker 4: zero for seven and bowl projections, the only two teams
- 51:46Speaker 4: that were not in any of those seven bowl projections
- 51:48Speaker 4: were both Iowa stayed in Colorado.
- 51:53Speaker 2: You're doing some some stuff with the Cowboys star time
- 51:56Speaker 2: at the Haymaker Network, and so, yeah, little moment from
- 52:01Speaker 2: a preseason where Schiah's Pete got to play for the Cowboys,
- 52:05Speaker 2: the first Navajo NFL player as far as we know,
- 52:10Speaker 2: and the reaction he got, the support that he got,
- 52:17Speaker 2: the postgame speech, all of it kind of heartwarming if
- 52:20Speaker 2: nothing else. And there's questions about whether or not this
- 52:23Speaker 2: guy's going to be on the practice squad where he's
- 52:25Speaker 2: going to be an active roster type player. He's a
- 52:28Speaker 2: really inspiring story going all the way back to you know,
- 52:31Speaker 2: being raised on a reservation and finding his way into football.
- 52:34Speaker 2: But I wanted, you know, to give you an opportunity
- 52:38Speaker 2: to add more context to it and talk more about it.
- 52:40Speaker 2: Because it was one of the big big things that
- 52:43Speaker 2: came off of social media from a preseason weekend.
- 52:47Speaker 4: Yeah, and the presence of the Navajo tribe at the stadium,
- 52:53Speaker 4: you know, showing him their appreciation. It really was a
- 52:55Speaker 4: remarkable situation. Everything you just outline there. I would encourage
- 53:00Speaker 4: people that have not seen this to go find it
- 53:01Speaker 4: on social media. The video of the standing ovation that
- 53:04Speaker 4: he got, the video of him talk in the locker room,
- 53:07Speaker 4: all of it, and you know, look some of it
- 53:10Speaker 4: you could you could, you know, it's corny or whatever,
- 53:12Speaker 4: but like just the essence of football and like what
- 53:16Speaker 4: football has meant to this person and how much that
- 53:20Speaker 4: person brings to the forefront in terms of you know,
- 53:25Speaker 4: just helping people understand what's happening and being a visibility
- 53:28Speaker 4: for the Navajo, right, Like that stuff is so cool
- 53:31Speaker 4: and I mean there's just nothing like it. I love it.
- 53:34Speaker 4: It really is one of the most unique and amazing
- 53:36Speaker 4: things about sports that you know, suddenly you can see
- 53:39Speaker 4: these stories that you know, transcend the sport itself. You know,
- 53:43Speaker 4: I'm pretty confident he's going to be a practice squad
- 53:46Speaker 4: player for the Cowboys this year. Like they've had this
- 53:48Speaker 4: over the years where they bring in projects along the
- 53:51Speaker 4: offensive line. I certainly think that that's gonna be the
- 53:54Speaker 4: case for him. I don't see him being a you know,
- 53:56Speaker 4: in a hot commodity in terms of, you know, not
- 53:59Speaker 4: being able to past waivers once he doesn't make the roster.
- 54:02Speaker 4: But here's a guy I think over the next couple
- 54:04Speaker 4: of years to watch and track to see his growth
- 54:06Speaker 4: and see if he can become an NFL player, because, like,
- 54:09Speaker 4: you know, it's funny. I think most of the guys
- 54:11Speaker 4: that will start in the Big twelve as part of
- 54:13Speaker 4: the two deep, oh, they all think they're going to
- 54:15Speaker 4: play in the NFL, and the reality is like one
- 54:17Speaker 4: percent of them are going to play in the NFL,
- 54:19Speaker 4: only the top of the top. And so like for me,
- 54:21Speaker 4: it's just really interesting, Like you see these stories of
- 54:24Speaker 4: guys that like had no shot, that are you know,
- 54:27Speaker 4: that are constantly bucking the trend. And I think following
- 54:29Speaker 4: him seeing his career, if he can do it, like
- 54:31Speaker 4: the work that goes into it would be an incredible story.
- 54:35Speaker 2: All Right, the next time I talk to you, we're
- 54:36Speaker 2: gonna have actual college football gameplay to react to.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Wow, wonderful lot that.
- 54:43Speaker 4: It's a beautiful thing and no, no more courts, no
- 54:46Speaker 4: more courts not go on?
- 54:49Speaker 1: Would let's not curse ourselvesously? Are you the man? Thanks
- 54:53Speaker 1: for jumping on again. Appreciate you.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Take care of se Ari Temkin Big twelve today over
- 54:59Speaker 2: on two in Radio. Also doing some work with the
- 55:03Speaker 2: Cowboys for the Haymaker Network Star Time. And if you
- 55:07Speaker 2: did not see what I'm referencing the sort of viral
- 55:11Speaker 2: moment where this young kid from New Mexico State ended
- 55:16Speaker 2: up playing for the Dallas Cowboys, just go check it out.
- 55:21Speaker 2: We saw a mini version of this basically everywhere BYU
- 55:25Speaker 2: women's basketball played this year.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Because Sydney Bentley or whatever.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Her her following among people of not only the Navajo Nation,
- 55:37Speaker 2: but like a lot of the Indian tribes around college
- 55:42Speaker 2: sports was really cool to watch. Like they show up,
- 55:46Speaker 2: they make a bunch of noise, they let the presence
- 55:48Speaker 2: be felt. She's a hero to a lot of these folks,
- 55:52Speaker 2: and the same is true of this. She has Pete
- 55:54Speaker 2: guy that gave an awesome brief postgame speech with the
- 55:59Speaker 2: Cowboy as well.
- 56:00Speaker 1: So pretty neat to see.
- 56:01Speaker 2: If you haven't checked it out, go find it Also,
- 56:05Speaker 2: if you haven't checked out Southern Steer butcher. Yet, I
- 56:08Speaker 2: really don't know what you're waiting for. I've been talking
- 56:10Speaker 2: about it for a few weeks now, but no more
- 56:14Speaker 2: excuses because college football season is upon us.
- 56:19Speaker 1: This week. Zero stuff that we're talking about.
- 56:22Speaker 2: Utah not playing BYU not playing only one Big twelve team,
- 56:25Speaker 2: and TCU is playing a perfect dry run for you

- 56:34Speaker 2: And if you're gonna give it the real shot, if
- 56:36Speaker 2: you're gonna give it the old college try, you gotta
- 56:38Speaker 2: do it with the actual product. You're gonna be making
- 56:41Speaker 2: up for all your guests when they come over to
- 56:44Speaker 2: watch the utes or when you take it up to

- 58:25Speaker 2: starts with volleyball four days from now, the Utah volleyball
- 58:30Speaker 2: team will have its first regular season game, first regular
- 58:34Speaker 2: season match. Their head coach, Alyssa d Rico is going
- 58:37Speaker 2: to join us next on The Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN
- 58:40Speaker 2: seven hundred and ninety two one FMD, you.
- 58:47Speaker 7: Were listening to The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 58:50Speaker 7: Hyundai Studio of ESPN seven hundred and ninety two to
- 58:54Speaker 7: one A f am, Welcome.
- 59:02Speaker 1: Back to the Shot O'Connell Show.
- 59:03Speaker 2: We start our number two with Utah volleyball head coach
- 59:07Speaker 2: Alyssa d Rico, first time on the show.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Coach, welcome, How are you?
- 59:13Speaker 8: I'm great, how are you?
- 59:14Speaker 1: Thanks for having me, Yeah, I appreciate you giving us
- 59:16Speaker 1: some time.
- 59:16Speaker 2: There's a bit of a theme with the fall sports
- 59:18Speaker 2: up there at the University of Utah. You know, you
- 59:22Speaker 2: and Morgan Scaley both taking over as first year head
- 59:25Speaker 2: coaches for legendary predecessors on the volleyball front. Tell me
- 59:30Speaker 2: what it feels like to step in to the big
- 59:33Speaker 2: gap left by your predecessor, Bethlenir.
- 59:37Speaker 6: Yeah, it's it's been awesome.
- 59:39Speaker 8: I feel very fortunate that, similar to coach Scali here
- 59:45Speaker 8: that I was able to be here for you know,
- 59:47Speaker 8: a few years, not as long as hid, but long
- 59:50Speaker 8: enough to know all of the support staff and know
- 59:53Speaker 8: the players and know the administration and really build those connections.
- 59:58Speaker 8: And Bess was great in when I came here. You know,
- 1:00:01Speaker 8: I told her I wanted to be a head coach,
- 1:00:02Speaker 8: and I didn't think that that opportunity was going to be.
- 1:00:05Speaker 6: At Utah, but I'm grateful it was. But she really
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: opened the doors to the program for me and allowed
- 1:00:11Speaker 6: me to be.
- 1:00:12Speaker 8: A part of you know a lot of different meetings,
- 1:00:14Speaker 8: get exposure to how things work behind the scenes.
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: And really had me involved in a lot which helped
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: make the transition pretty smooth. So it's been it's been awesome.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: So you've had a couple exhibition meets here.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: You had Weaber States last Saturday, coming off of one
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: with Oregon number twenty five preseason ranking for the Oregon Ducks,
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: and you know, official scores and stats and things like
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: this not kept. But what did you learn about your team?
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: What did you see in those that either you know,
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: gave you something to work on or that you liked.
- 1:00:50Speaker 8: Yeah, I think both exhibitions were great for us, just
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: to get some exposure, you know, to what we look
- 1:00:59Speaker 8: like against somebody else, you know, it's our Our gym
- 1:01:01Speaker 8: has been super competitive, so it's pretty hard to tell
- 1:01:06Speaker 8: what we're good at and what we're not good at
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: when you're playing against yourself. And so I think we
- 1:01:11Speaker 8: learned a lot about where we are. We had some
- 1:01:13Speaker 8: benchmarks in the off season that we had set of
- 1:01:16Speaker 8: some goals to you know, be at a Sweet sixteen
- 1:01:19Speaker 8: and Elite eight level statistically, and with both of the scrimmages,
- 1:01:24Speaker 8: you know, Weaver State, we met six of those eight benchmarks,
- 1:01:28Speaker 8: and against Oregon we we did really well and you know.
- 1:01:32Speaker 6: Met I think four of those eight benchmarks.
- 1:01:36Speaker 8: Against a really really good team and and played very
- 1:01:39Speaker 8: well throughout the course of that match. So I think
- 1:01:42Speaker 8: lots of good stuff was exposed Offensively. I think we're
- 1:01:45Speaker 8: really physical defensively, also really physical epinet and hard to
- 1:01:49Speaker 8: score on with with a great backcourt behind it. And
- 1:01:53Speaker 8: I think our setters had done an unbelievable job distributing
- 1:01:56Speaker 8: the ball for our offense to to really flow and
- 1:01:58Speaker 8: find that groove.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Give me a sense of what you mean by the benchmarks,
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: Like what target had you set that you were able
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: to hit on some cases and not on others.
- 1:02:07Speaker 8: Yeah, So earning points in volleyball is a big thing,
- 1:02:11Speaker 8: and so one of the biggest benchmarks that we were
- 1:02:14Speaker 8: pretty behind in previous years was points per set earned
- 1:02:17Speaker 8: as a team. We found, you know, from the last
- 1:02:21Speaker 8: I think three years, we did a study and earning
- 1:02:25Speaker 8: over eighteen points a set is.
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: Like a pretty good indicator that you're going to win
- 1:02:28Speaker 6: a lot of matches.
- 1:02:30Speaker 8: And so through our first two scrimmages, right now we're
- 1:02:33Speaker 8: earning over eighteen points a set against both Oregon and Weaver,
- 1:02:37Speaker 8: which was awesome. Kills per set was another big indicator,
- 1:02:41Speaker 8: and we were a couple of kills per set below
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: the benchmark it was fourteen, is like a good good
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: kills percent number for top teams, and.
- 1:02:50Speaker 6: Right now through the first two we've been at like
- 1:02:52Speaker 6: thirteen point nine kills per set, So lots of good
- 1:02:56Speaker 6: little things that we were looking at. And then on
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: the defensive side, our dig percentage.
- 1:03:01Speaker 8: Was about ten percent below where we would want it
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: to be, which is a good good indicator of stopping
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: the opponents from scoring points. And we are right now
- 1:03:13Speaker 8: five percent higher than what the benchmark was that we found.
- 1:03:18Speaker 6: So just lots of good stuff statistically for us to
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: be like, hey, the work we're putting in is paying off.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: You'll have to forgive some dumb questions from like a
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: novice volleyball watcher, you know what I mean. But like, okay,
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: so you know you've got you've got your your blockers
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: at the net, and you want to have good defense
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: behind them and stuff.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: But like in an ideal world, is a.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: Dig the kind of stat that like, yeah, we want
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: to be able to dig it out if it gets
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: to that point, but I don't want you to have
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: to dig it out. Like how how do you approach
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: that as a coach to where it's like, you know,
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: it seems like again novice stuff here where you're like,
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: you don't want that stat You don't want to be
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: great in that stat If you could avoid being great
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: in that's that?
- 1:04:00Speaker 9: Is that?
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Is that correct?
- 1:04:02Speaker 8: Yeah, it's a combination of your front court and your
- 1:04:05Speaker 8: back court defense. So it would be like obviously, your
- 1:04:11Speaker 8: you know, defensive line in football has to be great
- 1:04:13Speaker 8: in order for running backs just not to have free
- 1:04:17Speaker 8: reign you know, down the field.
- 1:04:19Speaker 6: So our front court defense, our blockers have to be
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: really physical in.
- 1:04:25Speaker 8: Order to make our back court defense easier, and so
- 1:04:30Speaker 8: yes and no, like we we want that number to
- 1:04:33Speaker 8: be good because the best teams are are gonna hit
- 1:04:37Speaker 8: around the block, hit over the block, and and our
- 1:04:39Speaker 8: back court has to be able to dig the ball
- 1:04:41Speaker 8: when that happens. But our front court has to do
- 1:04:45Speaker 8: its job to get the ball to the right place
- 1:04:50Speaker 8: or to terminally block it at the end. So one
- 1:04:52Speaker 8: of our other goals was to terminally block close to three.
- 1:04:57Speaker 6: Balls a set, which is really elite. Through the spring,
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: we were at that number. Right now we are below
- 1:05:04Speaker 6: that number.
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: But part of that is also opponent dependent. You know,
- 1:05:08Speaker 8: you can't you can't limit the run game in football.
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: If the opponent doesn't like to run the.
- 1:05:13Speaker 6: Ball, they if they like to throw it, you're gonna
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: have less opportunities to stop this. And so for us,
- 1:05:19Speaker 6: we've we've played.
- 1:05:20Speaker 8: Some teams in Weber and in Oregon that avoided the block.
- 1:05:24Speaker 6: A little bit more, which makes it more difficult to
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: see that stat really where you would want it to be,
- 1:05:31Speaker 6: if that makes sense. So I appreciate the questions.
- 1:05:34Speaker 8: I love trying to explain volleyball and get new fans
- 1:05:36Speaker 8: on board.
- 1:05:37Speaker 6: So no question is a bad question.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: For me, I appreciate that you you change it to
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: football terms for my feeble mind, just knowing that that's
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: probably a place where I might have some familiarity.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: That's that's very nice of you to do.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: When we talk about physicality at the net, this is
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: another thing I'm always fascinated by, like how much of
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: a certain aspect of these games, how much of it
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: in this volleyball, how much of that is coachable?
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: And how much of that is like you just have
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: to recruit the players that have that in them for sure.
- 1:06:09Speaker 8: Yeah, I think physicality is both something you can develop
- 1:06:15Speaker 8: in some ways, but definitely.
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: Something that is you know, you have to recruit.
- 1:06:20Speaker 8: And for me and for us, we don't view physicality
- 1:06:24Speaker 8: necessarily as one hundred percent. You know, how tall you
- 1:06:27Speaker 8: are in volleyball, it's more how high can you jump
- 1:06:31Speaker 8: and how high can you play? So we have a
- 1:06:33Speaker 8: range on our team of you know, six, five to
- 1:06:37Speaker 8: five nine that are all playing front row. But the
- 1:06:41Speaker 8: general theme is that all of our most physical attackers
- 1:06:45Speaker 8: are touching well over ten feet and so you know,
- 1:06:49Speaker 8: you look at a basketball rim and the rims ten
- 1:06:51Speaker 8: feet and I think the highest toucher on our team
- 1:06:54Speaker 8: right now is ten seven and a half, so they
- 1:06:57Speaker 8: could probably they could probably dunk.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: And who is touching ten seven and a half right now?
- 1:07:04Speaker 8: Lauren Helgeson is touching ten seven and a half, but
- 1:07:07Speaker 8: Cameron get bad Low our outside.
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: Is touching ten seven. I think we have eight or.
- 1:07:13Speaker 8: Nine athletes that are you know ten four and higher,
- 1:07:16Speaker 8: so they're easily able to go, you know, touch and
- 1:07:19Speaker 8: grab the rim, which the height of the volleyball net
- 1:07:23Speaker 8: is only you know seven five ish, and so when
- 1:07:28Speaker 8: you look at how high they're jumping and how high
- 1:07:30Speaker 8: they can play, that's a certain.
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: Level of physicality. And at the highest level you're going
- 1:07:36Speaker 6: to see a lot of players on the other team
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: that are touching you know, ten six and above, and
- 1:07:40Speaker 6: so we have to have the ability to go play
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: at that height above the net. But then the other
- 1:07:45Speaker 6: thing is, you know, how hard can.
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: You hit the ball?
- 1:07:47Speaker 8: And I just saw this on ESPN for the pit game,
- 1:07:51Speaker 8: watching it back on TV, and they.
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: Equated digging a volleyball.
- 1:07:56Speaker 8: Hit at fifty five to sixty miles an hour down
- 1:07:59Speaker 8: the line is like facing one hundred and thirty five
- 1:08:02Speaker 8: to one hundred and forty five mile.
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: Per hour fastball in baseball, and so you have to
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: combine the height you play at with how hard you
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: can hit the ball. And that's the most physical players
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: in the country are going to jump really high and
- 1:08:15Speaker 6: hit really hard. So we got to have a mix
- 1:08:18Speaker 6: of both.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: Lauren Helgeson, by the way, for all the local listeners,
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: Davis High School product, so home homegrown, touching ten seven
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: and a half.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: That's wild. Yes, yes, okay, you just brought up another
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: number here.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: That's We had a conversation last week talking about the
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: reaction time required to hit and we were talking about
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: one hundred and five mile an hour fastballs in Major
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: League baseball because we did the math and it's like
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: it's literally quicker than the blink of an eye that
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: you have to just just swing to execute a swing
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: on like a Miserowski pitch this year because he hit
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: one O five point five on the gun or whatever.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: So when when someone's elevating to hit and you know
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: it's a big hitter, you know it's someone that's got
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: power and they're gonna do their best to put it
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: on the correct angle and obviously they're gonna maybe paint
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: those lines and things like that. You don't have less
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: than a blink of an eye to like react right.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: You have to anticipate where that thing is going. Coach,
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: how is that taught? How do you coach that? Is
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: that a film study? Is that this girl's tendency is
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: to go deep with it? Is this someone who's gonna
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: try to spike it right down? Like, give me some
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: sense of how your defenders, especially your backcourt defenders, are
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: trying to anticipate where that hit is going to land.
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, very similar to other sports.
- 1:09:41Speaker 8: We do a ton of scout video on opponents, and
- 1:09:48Speaker 8: this year we changed it a little bit that we
- 1:09:51Speaker 8: basically want you to be an expert on the thing
- 1:09:53Speaker 8: that you're going to see the most. So, if I'm
- 1:09:58Speaker 8: a right side blocker, I'm going to see mostly left
- 1:10:02Speaker 8: side attacks, and.
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: So I need to know where the ball.
- 1:10:06Speaker 6: Crosses the net more often than not, what their you know,
- 1:10:10Speaker 6: arm swing tendency looks like, so that I can put
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: myself in the best position to go try and block
- 1:10:15Speaker 6: at the net against that attacker.
- 1:10:16Speaker 8: But the back court is watching the same thing but
- 1:10:20Speaker 8: with different, you know, different visual attention of do they
- 1:10:24Speaker 8: like to play you know, sharpened down in front of you?
- 1:10:27Speaker 8: Do they like to hit deep and flat?
- 1:10:29Speaker 6: Like, what things should you be expecting based on the
- 1:10:33Speaker 6: set quality and that attacker's tendency. So yeah, same same thing.
- 1:10:37Speaker 8: We study a lot of film try and pick up
- 1:10:40Speaker 8: you know, arm swing traits and characteristics and tendencies, and
- 1:10:45Speaker 8: we have a lot of visual statistics that.
- 1:10:48Speaker 6: We can show them.
- 1:10:50Speaker 8: We call them heat maps that show where the attacker
- 1:10:54Speaker 8: hits the most amount of volleyballs on the court. So hopefully,
- 1:10:58Speaker 8: you know, in game, they can correlate what they've seen
- 1:11:01Speaker 8: on video with what they see happening in front of
- 1:11:03Speaker 8: them in real time.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: We're talking a little Utah volleyball.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: Here on the Sean O'Connell Show, new head coach Alisa
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: d Rico kind enough to join us. I'm gonna give
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: you some unfair questions now, because I think it was
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: the I think it was the Soccer World Cup that
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: really brought this into focus for a lot of people
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: when Team USA got eliminated. Immediately the conversation goes to, well,
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: how do we develop the sport, how do we become
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: a leade, how do we get it better? And that
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: trickled down, of course into the youth sport conversation. And
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: I'm watching a Little League World Series on a TV
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: in front of me right now. And you know, like
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: youth sport obviously becomes high school sport, club sport, and
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: then college sports and hopefully, you know, the love volleyball
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: LVB can continue to thrive, so there's a viable domestic
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: league for your athletes to compete in at the professional level.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: But going to the youth sport front.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: Volleyball is one of these games where it is a
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: very robust business model, where it is a big time
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: commitment that the club volleyball, the travel volleyball is an
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: all encompassing, time consuming, like life gobbling affair for the
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: families that are trying to put their daughters onto a
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: Utah volleyball roster or whatever. And you as a head coach,
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: right you're recruiting these athletes, and there's an argument about
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: letting them play basketball too, and letting them play soccer also,
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: and let them be track athletes. How soon do you
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: specialize if you are going to specialize, And I want people,
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: I want the parents out there listening to hear it
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: from the horse's mouth from the person who is signing
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: the scholarship checks. Effectively, like this is what I need
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: from the development of players if they want to be.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: At this level.
- 1:12:53Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, a couple couple of things.
- 1:12:57Speaker 8: I a lot of clubs with probably not gonna like
- 1:13:00Speaker 8: me for saying this, but I love multiport athletes. I
- 1:13:06Speaker 8: think it counteracts the burnout factor.
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: You know, if you.
- 1:13:13Speaker 6: Specialize too early and it's just the thing that you
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: do because it's the thing that you do, versus the
- 1:13:17Speaker 6: thing that you do because it's the thing that you love.
- 1:13:21Speaker 8: I think that there's something to be said about playing
- 1:13:24Speaker 8: other sports for as long as you can, and you know,
- 1:13:27Speaker 8: specializing once you get to college where it truly is
- 1:13:31Speaker 8: a job.
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: And so I love I love multiport athletes. We have
- 1:13:36Speaker 6: a ton of them on our roster that.
- 1:13:38Speaker 8: Have done multiple sports, you know, anything from softball to
- 1:13:42Speaker 8: track to you know, basketball, right Like, I think that
- 1:13:47Speaker 8: there's there's growth in being the best athlete that you
- 1:13:51Speaker 8: can be when you get to college, and that comes
- 1:13:54Speaker 8: from learning how to move your body in a variety
- 1:13:56Speaker 8: of ways and learning.
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: How to handle and play different sports with different you
- 1:14:01Speaker 6: know details. So I think that that's.
- 1:14:03Speaker 8: Point number one for me.
- 1:14:05Speaker 6: I absolutely love well rounded, you know athletes that have
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: done multiple things. The second thing that kind of goes
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: along with that is for me to succeed at this
- 1:14:17Speaker 6: level and to have a chance to to really make
- 1:14:21Speaker 6: it and thrive, you truly have to love it.
- 1:14:24Speaker 8: And I think again, like deciding you know how when
- 1:14:29Speaker 8: to specialize and to do all of that, like you
- 1:14:32Speaker 8: truly love it if you're doing all of these things,
- 1:14:35Speaker 8: and then you decide that this is the one. Like
- 1:14:37Speaker 8: I played basketball all the way through my senior year.
- 1:14:40Speaker 8: I played softball through my sophomore year of high school.
- 1:14:45Speaker 8: So I think that there's no harm in it. But
- 1:14:47Speaker 8: I think for me being the best athlete that you
- 1:14:49Speaker 8: can be and the best student, which doing multiple things
- 1:14:52Speaker 8: helps with that. And then you know, truly having a
- 1:14:55Speaker 8: passion of love for the game when you get to
- 1:14:57Speaker 8: college is going to get you through the highs and
- 1:14:59Speaker 8: the low of being a college athlete, because there's there's
- 1:15:02Speaker 8: gonna be highs and there's for sure going to be
- 1:15:04Speaker 8: lows and challenging moments that you got to you got
- 1:15:07Speaker 8: to have your why to fall back on and why you.
- 1:15:08Speaker 7: Love what you do.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: All right, focusing again on your team. Regular season schedule
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: begins with a little little tournament. You've got Utah Valley,
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: You've got Utah Tech. What do you anticipate, Uh, this
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: is four and five days from now.
- 1:15:27Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, I think Utah Valley is always good. We're
- 1:15:32Speaker 8: We're really fortunate that the state of Utah has great volleyball.
- 1:15:35Speaker 8: I think the last you know, three four years, we've
- 1:15:37Speaker 8: had four or five teams in the NAA tournament between
- 1:15:41Speaker 8: Utah Valley, Weaver State, Utah State, b yu US, Utah
- 1:15:45Speaker 8: Tech is you know on the rise, and they've they've
- 1:15:48Speaker 8: had a great you know last couple of years as well,
- 1:15:50Speaker 8: and so I think for us getting to play you know,
- 1:15:53Speaker 8: local teams but also know.
- 1:15:54Speaker 6: That we're going to be challenged is awesome to start
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: the year. So I'm excited. I think Utah Valley is
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: always you know, going to.
- 1:16:01Speaker 8: Be a challenge, especially us going down there and playing
- 1:16:04Speaker 8: at their place, but it'll be a great start to
- 1:16:07Speaker 8: the season with them and then Utah Tech on Saturday
- 1:16:11Speaker 8: afternoon before we get to come back here and play
- 1:16:14Speaker 8: Oregon stay at home. So yeah, I expect it to
- 1:16:17Speaker 8: be just really really good volleyball. You know, the state
- 1:16:20Speaker 8: as a whole has a reputation for each program, you know,
- 1:16:23Speaker 8: competing at the top of their conference for conference championships.
- 1:16:27Speaker 6: So it's a good test for us early in the season.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: Coach.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: I know it's a busy time of year and I
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: very much appreciate you giving us a few minutes today.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: Good luck this weekend and thanks.
- 1:16:38Speaker 6: Yeah, thank you so much for having me. I really
- 1:16:40Speaker 6: appreciate it.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: That is Utah head volleyball coach in her first year
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: heading into the initial campaign. Alyssa da Rico kind enough
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: to join us here on the Sean O'Connell Show. All right,
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: we've got a lot lined up on the show today.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Zach Moss is going to join us next. We've got
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: the Daily Dump still to come. We've got some overunders
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: that I want to get into regarding the Utah offense.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: In the one o'clock hour we are rolling to start
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: off the week.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: Utah is number one Sports Talk ESPN seven hundred and
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: ninety two one FM.
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: Who we were, who.
- 1:17:24Speaker 7: Peace peas dot Sean O'Connell show, you were home of
- 1:17:27Speaker 7: the best inside of your uthes. Let's get back to
- 1:17:30Speaker 7: OC from a Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN seven hundred
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: and ninety two one AM.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: Well, welcome back to the shat O'Connell Show. Welcome in
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: the legendary Utah running back Zach Moss, who joins us
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: again to talk a little Utah football, a little big
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: twelve football, a little ball in general.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: Zach Moss, Welcome back to the show. How are you.
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: Doing, Will Man? How you doing?
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: I'm doing all right.
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: Before we get into anything you specific here, I need
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: your thoughts on this strange happening that is occurring in
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: college football right now, where guys who are being cut
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: from NFL preseason rosters, even some who have played in
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: NFL preseason games, are now trying to make their way
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: back onto college football rosters because of the fifth year
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: of eligibility added to everyone's clock moving forward. Guys who
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: graduated last year or who exhausted their eligibility last year are,
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: rather than accepting that and moving on, they're saying, oh, no, well,
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: I'm not going to I'm not quite making it here
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: in the NFL.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: So let me go play for LSU.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: Let me hop back into a transfer portal and see
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: if there's a market for my services as a man
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: who spent time in the league and was an elite
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: college football player and knows what both of those leagues
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: demand of a person. What are your thoughts on guys
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: trying to come back to college football after flirting with
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: It's it's definitely weird. Havn't really paid a ton of
- 1:19:15Speaker 5: attention to it outside of seeing things on social media
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: and stuff like that, but you know, first real reaction
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: to it, it's definitely a weird thing. Just you know,
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: it's never happened before. Uh, I understand it when you
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: are a player who you know, you get cut waves
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: whatever from the NFL as a undrafted or very low
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: round pick, and you know, with the world in I L. Right,
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: because I think that's the main thing that kind of
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: ties it from my from my perspective, as the NIL
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: part of it. You know, if you don't have an
- 1:19:56Speaker 5: I L. I don't think guys actually want to go back.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: To school, right.
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: Because you can make so much more. These guys are.
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: Making way more money in their NIL in college almost
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: doesn't really fully matter, especially if they were, you know,
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: pretty good players in college. You make more money in
- 1:20:15Speaker 5: IL in one year than you would do if you
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: were on a rookie contract that puts you in the
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: sixth or seventh round or obviously undrafted as well. So
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: I think most of these guys understand that the financial
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: gain is there, and I think that's why, you know,
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: people are way more interested, right. I think that's why
- 1:20:39Speaker 5: you're way more interested in going back and potentially grabbing
- 1:20:43Speaker 5: that nil versus you know, trying to stick it out
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: in the NFL, or CFL or USFL whatever those other
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: leagues are and things of that nature, or just moving forward.
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: So let's say, just for the sake of a of
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: a hypothetical here, you're not gonna make an active roster, right,
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: you're one of these guys, you're six seventh round pick,
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: you're an undrafted free agent. You're not gonna make an
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: active roster, but you've got a great chant, a great
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: shot to be on the practice squad, which this year
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: is about if you if you're active on the practice
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: squad for the whole season, it's gonna be two fifty
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: three hundred grand, right, Or let's say the money is
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: comparable if you can go back, if you can bounce
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: back and play for the University of Utah as you know,
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: a great second option at whatever position you're gonna make,
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: you know, two to three hundred thousand dollars there if
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: I put Zach Moss in those shoes and you have
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: to make a decision as a twenty two year old,
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: twenty three year old whatever. You can either go back
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: to college where you will play in actual games, but
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: I'm gonna make the money equal here, so it's not
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: a financial decision for you. Or you can be in
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: an NFL system. You can familiarize with the NFL life.
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: You can get in on a practice squad maybe you know,
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: if you get called up, maybe there's an injury in
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: front of you. Whatever, What would the choice be for
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: you personally?
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: That's that's that's a tough one, uh, because how I.
- 1:22:13Speaker 6: Am shaped mentally, even.
- 1:22:15Speaker 4: With the hypothetical.
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: I think.
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: With the money being equal for me knowing what I
- 1:22:27Speaker 5: know now about taxes, right, it wouldn't. It would just
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: depend on what city, what state.
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: I'm playing in. Okay, Yeah, Like if I'm playing.
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: Practice squad in New York, right, and that two fifty,
- 1:22:43Speaker 5: you know, you take I think it's forty stage of
- 1:22:45Speaker 5: forty eight, which I've played in the state of New York,
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: which is in fun when it comes down to bringing
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: down those numbers, right, or coming back to Utah obviously,
- 1:22:54Speaker 5: I don't know what the numbers are here, uh, because
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: they don't.
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: Have a protein.
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: But I'm taking my chances probably uh, coming back to
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: college football for one more year, and you never know,
- 1:23:07Speaker 5: you you might, you know, just like the same way
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: you can get called up over there. Something you could
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: be that second guy, third guy. Something can happen in
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: college and you you radawaffle a pretty good year.
- 1:23:18Speaker 6: So you know, I'll take I'll take my chances.
- 1:23:21Speaker 4: Of going back to college.
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: You know, it's also pretty stress free life.
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: When you don't you come back another year.
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure you're probably already graduating all those things
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: as well.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: Yeah, you're you're taking basket weaving classes and stuff like that.
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: Probably probably not difficult. Yeah, all right, let's focus in
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: on the University of Utah here for a second. So, uh,
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: camp is over right, three weeks of hammering away at
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: one another. Now do you divide up the ones and
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: the two's and they go off and play against the
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: scout team of an opposing offense and opposing defense.
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: Position battles, for the most part, are supposed to be
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: figured out at this point, and Utah had plenty of
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: questions and important spots like along the offensive line.
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: The the difference for these players now that you're in
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: game prep, now that you're in uh in like season
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: mode instead of in camp. How significant is that difference
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: for these guys right now?
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: Yes, it's a big change.
- 1:24:23Speaker 5: You know, in camp, you're you're letting everything just go right.
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: You're you're just trying to continue to get better in
- 1:24:30Speaker 5: every single way. You're pushing yourself much more than you do.
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: Once you turn into that season mode, right it's a
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: hard switch you gotta you gotta make because you go
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: three weeks and you just you're in there every single
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: day and that's the only thing you know. And then
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: once that comes down to the to the end and
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: you have to switch to season mode. Right now, you
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: have to figure out how to what's my.
- 1:24:55Speaker 4: Routine right.
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: Which is probably the biggest thing because that's how you
- 1:25:00Speaker 5: your day. You dictate everything that's going to happen around
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: your day and how you work with football and how
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: you got to add back will into everything and stuff
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: that nature. So you know, it's a big mental shift
- 1:25:13Speaker 5: because you have to start thinking about X, Y and Z,
- 1:25:16Speaker 5: processing this and putting this over here and just aligning
- 1:25:20Speaker 5: yourself the right way so that you know, the things
- 1:25:24Speaker 5: off the field can run pretty smoothly because all these
- 1:25:27Speaker 5: things that you don't you don't think about, these things
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: are in camps, right. That's the point of being up
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: at the hotel or wherever they have these guys that
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: during that right is to get away from anything outside
- 1:25:40Speaker 5: and just be all ball. But once you come out
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: of that for those three weeks, you know, it's you
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: have to jump right back into real life and managing
- 1:25:48Speaker 5: a lot of different halts.
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: And stuff like that.
- 1:25:50Speaker 5: So you know, the biggest thing is just get into
- 1:25:53Speaker 5: a routine and find what works for you, what works
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: for your body, what helps you feel good mentally, physically,
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: mostly whatever it may be, right, just find the best
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: overall routine because that's what's gonna carry you through, you know,
- 1:26:07Speaker 5: what we hope to be a very long season.
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: Zach Moss our guests here on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: talking all things Utah football. The class load is always
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: an interesting thing because guys are at different points in
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: their academic career, right and it's it's really foreign to
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: me right now what that actually looks like for these players, because.
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: When I was in college it was.
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: There was no nil, There was no expectation that you
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: were supposed to be like a business person in addition
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: to being a college football player. You did your lyft
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: in the morning, you went to class, you got your grades,
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: you practiced in the afternoon, and it was rinse and
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: repeat throughout the whole season. Right, it's a lot more
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: involved now these guys. The time commitment is significant. The
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: guys at the top of the roster right way, Shaun
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: Parker demon Dan Pierre Lance called, these guys have community
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: engagement and they got endorsements and they got all this
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: type of stuff. While also you're supposed to maintain your
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: eligibility and you're supposed to be like a student.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: The student athlete part is supposed to matter at least
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: to some people.
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: And if you're a guy who might not make an
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: NFL roster, you better take it seriously because you have
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: this opportunity to get a free education right now. So, uh,
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: part of that routine you're talking about is a class load,
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: and it varies so much for each person. How did
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: you manage as an elite player with you know, still
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: a slightly different air, but uh, you know, with what
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: football demanded of you and what life was eventually going
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: to need you to have a degree for.
- 1:27:43Speaker 5: How did you managem I think, you know with uh,
- 1:27:49Speaker 5: you know coach with uh in Cyrus. Uh. You know,
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: those two set a pretty good standard on you know,
- 1:27:59Speaker 5: being a student first, right, being actually but being a
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: student first, because you know, you know, for me growing
- 1:28:08Speaker 5: up where I grew up in Miami, you know, the
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: only thing you're thinking about is being an athlete. He's
- 1:28:13Speaker 5: not thinking about being a student first. Essentially, You're thinking
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: about athletic ability and playing in the NFL and things
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: of that nature. So you know, coming here and those
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: guys having the shift and all the players buying in.
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: You know, I think we finished topping EPA for athletes
- 1:28:33Speaker 5: and football every year when I was there, So you know,
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: it was almost like a prizing more so than anything
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: that you wanted to make sure that you wouldn't one
- 1:28:43Speaker 5: of those guys that were just kind of teetering on
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: that line.
- 1:28:47Speaker 4: And stuff like that.
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: Because also you know in the NFL they look.
- 1:28:50Speaker 4: At stuff like that as well.
- 1:28:51Speaker 5: Right, That's that's something that they they pay attention to
- 1:28:54Speaker 5: when it's that time for you to you know, go
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: talk to them, be potentially in the draft and stuff
- 1:28:59Speaker 5: like that. Obviously, you know, totally different, right, you know
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: for me, you know, kind of closer to yours experience
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: a little bit where you know, there is no expectations
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: off the field, right, there is no public appearances, there
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: is no uh this, that and the other. You know,
- 1:29:18Speaker 5: even when in the NFL, right, it was still at
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: least my first three years, you know, it was hard
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: to want to make a uh a footprint outside of
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: being the football player, right, kind of building something for
- 1:29:34Speaker 5: yourself and things of that nature, just because organizations, uh
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: you know still didn't fully like that. Now, I think
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: obviously with the n I L is the doors blown open.
- 1:29:45Speaker 5: You know, I see the guys with through social media,
- 1:29:48Speaker 5: with the different restaurants and things of that nature, which
- 1:29:53Speaker 5: is great. You know, they continue to build. You know,
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: it's pocketed, it's money in they're pocketing right now. But
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: I think you know, the big picture is they're making connections,
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: right that can go a long way, no matter where
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: they may be in life. And that's what it's all
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: about us trying to make connections. And you know, for me,
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: I guess that was the biggest thing that I did
- 1:30:13Speaker 5: that I paid attention to was trying to make connections
- 1:30:16Speaker 5: you know that would do when you never know when
- 1:30:18Speaker 5: you would need them.
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: All right, I'm going to be running some over unders
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: for the year, some statistical overunders past the listeners here
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: in a minute. So I'm gonna give you a chance
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: to answer these. First, we've been examining the passing game
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: when I go, when I put out these hypothetical numbers,
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: and I'm going to stay on that front for just
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: a minute. Here the over under on Utah having two
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: ninety nine point five passing yards. Does Utah have three
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: thousand passing yards this year or more? Or do they
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: stay under that total? Given mac g Kevin mcgiven as
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: the new offensive coordinator, obviously you take into account an
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: offensive line that might not give you quite as much
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: time as you had last year, A healthier version of
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: Devon dam Pier, whatever Bert Fickland's role is, maybe a
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: better wide receiving corps. We'll see where do you think
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: we hit when it comes to that three thousand yard
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: that magic mark of three thousand yards passing over or under?
- 1:31:22Speaker 5: I'll say over. I think I think he had what
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: he had twenty three twenty four hundred last year passing
- 1:31:29Speaker 5: I want to say, so, yeah, I would say, I
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: would say over.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: The passing yardage for Devon dam Pier last year, he
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: had twenty four to ninety and obviously he was even
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: in that case splitting some reps. Utah as a as
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: a total team finished last year with two and sixteen
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: passing yards on the season. There were five teams in
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: the Big Twelve Conference that had three thousand or more.
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: Since of that, Arizona, Texas Tech, TCU, and Baylor all
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: had more than three thousand yards. So three thousand puts
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: you in the top five at least for last year.
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: Like you said, you know, the injuries to himself, the
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: splitting of the reps to some degree obviously, you know,
- 1:32:21Speaker 5: and I mean you talk about the way we rushed
- 1:32:23Speaker 5: the ball last year, with that type of production we
- 1:32:26Speaker 5: had on the ground, he would think that number would
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: probably be a little smaller there. So you know, I'm optimistic,
- 1:32:32Speaker 5: but I agree. I think from everything I've heard, this roster,
- 1:32:36Speaker 5: at least from the wide receiver position, is really really
- 1:32:40Speaker 5: talented and got a lot of death there. So I
- 1:32:43Speaker 5: think they're going to lean into that a lot this year.
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: To Zach's point, last year, Utah the number one rushing
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: offense in the conference, three four and sixty two yards
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: on the ground. The offense averaged six yards of carry
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: no matter who had the ball in their hand.
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: That that's healthy.
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: Yeah, uh any uh any insight you can give us
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: on what you personally are going to be doing. Are
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: we allowed to talk about that yet when it comes
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: to this upcoming football season.
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: I'm not sure.
- 1:33:19Speaker 5: Uh, but yeah, you know, it would be some interesting
- 1:33:24Speaker 5: things happening from that standpoint of things, but more so
- 1:33:28Speaker 5: just you know, looking forward to seeing a lot of
- 1:33:31Speaker 5: wins and right cycles and you know, hopefully getting to
- 1:33:34Speaker 5: that that that championship game, in the conference championship game,
- 1:33:37Speaker 5: and then going to do something in the playoffs.
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: What We're ten days away from Utah kicking off the
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: season against Idahoa up there on a Thursday night, So
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: I know we'll be talking to you next week as
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: well as Zach.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: But it's getting closer, man.
- 1:33:50Speaker 5: We're almost there, yes, sir, almost their football is almost back.
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: Thanks for your time. I appreciate you, no problem, man. Yeah,
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: We're going Zach Moss.
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: Running back legend at the University of Utah, he thinks
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: Utah hits the over on three thousand yards passing. We'll
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: unpack what that would mean for the offense and do
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: some comparisons when we get to it in the one
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: o'clock hour.
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: Take it a quick break here.
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: We're coming back with a little over under, or excuse me,
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: coming back with a little daily dump here on the
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show. It's Utah's number one Sports Talk ESPN
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: seven hundred and ninety two one FM.
- 1:34:32Speaker 10: Feeling out of the loop, Let's catch up on today's
- 1:34:35Speaker 10: biggest headlines and the daily news Dump, where we flush
- 1:34:38Speaker 10: out the biggest stories of the day on the Sean
- 1:34:40Speaker 10: O'Connell Show at Utah's number one Sports Talk ESPN seven
- 1:34:45Speaker 10: hundred and ninety two one FM.
- 1:34:47Speaker 7: Drought to you by Bally Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Just
- 1:34:50Speaker 7: look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: Well, welcome back to the Shot O'Connell show.
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooler, who get up with the
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: daily dump every day that we do a show. The
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: truck with the duck can do the drain cleaning. You've
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: got a leaky faucet, call him or go to Valley
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: Plumbing dot Com. Just make an appointment without even calling.
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: If you have excavation needs, they can handle that. If
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: your conditioner is acting funny, they can handle that. If
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: your furnace making a weird smell when you turn it
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: on in the fall, you have to have the truck
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: with the duck get out there as quick as you can.
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: Tell them OC sent you. They take good care of us,
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: all right.
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: This is a family show, so I'm gonna be careful,
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: gonna be delicate with how I talk about this.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: But NFL owners, man, and they have some weird pre elections.
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: It seems.
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: We all know about Robert Kraft and his affinity for
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: low price massages, right, we learned about that unfortunately some
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: years back.
- 1:36:15Speaker 6: And now.
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: Not only do the forty nine ers have an electrical
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: substation problem, but their owner, Jed York has allegedly been
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: arrested and thrown some charges for being caught up in
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: a sting in Ohio at a trailer park. This is
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: the owner of the San Francisco forty nine ers. People,
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: what are we doing? NFL owners? We talked about how
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: the NBA has like some weird owner situations going on.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: The NFL owners are strange too, and apparently at least
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: two of them have the same tendency to seek out
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: low budget entertainment when they're in cities that they don't
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: live in.
- 1:37:18Speaker 4: This is.
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: Gross and very very very odd. Is the take just
- 1:37:28Speaker 3: that billionaires are weird?
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: I think.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: The thing might be that billionaires and maybe this is
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: how billionaires stay billionaires, because even when they're indulging in
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: vices that they should not be indulging in, they seek
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: out the low budget option, always frugal. Jed York allegedly
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: arranged he responded to an undercover ad on a well
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: established website for a certain type of rendezvous and arranged
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: for a certain level of activity to happen between himself
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: and an undercover plant for one hundred and forty dollars.
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: Arrested in East Palestine, Ohio by the East Palestine, Ohio
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: Police Department the Wheathill mobile home community, which is not
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: a place that NFL owners are frequenting that often. I
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: imagine really no mobile home communities that's not a regular
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: haunt for NFL owners. Yeah, it's I brought it up
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: last week about the weird stuff that's happening and in
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: many of the cases unethical stuffy, possibly even more kind
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: of serious stuff happening in the NBA that's getting on
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: of attention. But NFL's had some weird scandals like this too,
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: just the billionaires who run sports league specifically. Oh see,
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: they're just showing just how weird billionaires are compared to
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: seemingly weird billionaires are compared to the rest of us,
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: who have much less money. For whatever reason, I was
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: just looking up because even as a forty nine Ers fan,
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: I must confess I've not been paying very close attention
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: to their preseason schedule, And I was like, well, why
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: is he in? Why is the forty nine Ers owner
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: in East Palestine, Ohio? Were they like, were they there
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: for a matchup with the Browns or something? No, No,
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: he just decided he wanted to be there for this
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: specific thing. He's originally from Youngstown, Ohio. Oh okay, so ohiokay.
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: I guess that maybe he was back in the back
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: on the home front, back in the home state.
- 1:39:58Speaker 6: This is.
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: Bizarre. Oh see.
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: Shouldn't it be called West Palestine, Ohio? By the way,
- 1:40:06Speaker 3: Like that is far west from Palace from actual Palestine.
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: Actual Palestine. I guess it just depends on your point
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: of reference. What if you're going the other way, I
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: guess if I guess it's east if you go east
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: over the International Date Line instead of west over Africa
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: in Europe, I suppose it's further east of Palestine that
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: it is west of Palestine if you travel east, is there?
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: I wonder if there's a Palestine, Ohio and this is
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: East Palestine, that might maybe that's it almost east of Palaestine.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: Certainly Palestine, Ohio, Palestine village in Ohio. Okay, well there
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: you go. This this East Palestine is east of that.
- 1:40:50Speaker 5: You know what?
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: The you know what, the extra big problem that Jed
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: York has in this story is that far more than Robert,
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: who's I think a lot more recognizable. You know, Like
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: if I if I asked you, hey, do you know
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: what Jed York looks like? I would I would say
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: I have no idea. He'd be like, he looks like
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: every mug shot you've ever seen in every sting that they.
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: Have done on this front. He's a younger guy compare
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: to other owners. He's on the young side.
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: Yeah, but he's still like the mugshot looks like every
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: single undercover sting operation mug shot when someone is trying
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: to get themselves an illicit form of entertainment for one
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: hundred and forty dollars, Jed, Here's what I need you
- 1:41:47Speaker 2: to do. I need you to focus on the electrical
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: substation that is deteriorating the health of your players.
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: Please.
- 1:41:54Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know. I guess you didn't pay
- 1:41:56Speaker 3: attention to that video I sent you last week. It's
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: not really doing that.
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: It is though.
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: You're still You're still right, despite idio of the scientific
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: evidence that may or may not be saying that, it's
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: actually not hurting them more than anything else would hurt them.
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: This the move is still just a move to practice facility.
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: Just move, just move.
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: In his Canter in his Freedom Cantor, in his Cantor
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: Freedom got himself kicked out of an WNBA game Chicago Sky,
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: Indiana fever and former jazz Man Former jazz Man in
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: his Cantor has decided that he's inserting himself into the
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: volatile conversation surrounding transgender athletes and where they should be
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: allowed to compete, where they should not be allowed to.
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: Compete, et cetera.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: It's a major political hot button issue for people obviously,
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: it's something that is kind of ramping up conversationally in
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: the WNBA, and I want to say this about a
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: very sensitive issue. There are a lot of people that
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: are concerned about this issue for the right reasons. There
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: are also a lot of people who are making their
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: opinion on this known for everything except the right reasons.
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: And I think in his cancer might fall into that category. Like,
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: even if you agree with what he is saying, in
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: what his stance is and his stance is that in
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: a place like the WNBA, biological females should be the
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: only ones allowed to compete. That's his stance. I don't
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: think that is a controversial stance. I think that is
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: totally fine. I think that is the way things should be.
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: I am not making this my life's mission because I
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: am not going to go out there and disingenuously pretend
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: that this is the most important thing to me, that
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: I need to be part of this conversation, that I
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: have an emotional stake in it, a political stake in it,
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: or any other kind of stake in it. I'm not
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: going to act like I am indignant over the idea
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: that female athletes are not protected and the like the
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: most diligent way possible. Right the w NBA has a
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: ton of problems. The w NBA needs to get it's
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: you know what in order in a lot on a
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: lot of different fronts. This is not a concern right
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: now in the w NBA.
- 1:44:34Speaker 3: We don't have trans athletes playing in the w NBA
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: R there's no trans athletes playing in college because there's
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: a there's been a law passed. It was an executive
- 1:44:45Speaker 3: order by by the president when he came in that's
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: that banned all of those. So, like, this is not
- 1:44:50Speaker 3: a threat right now. People like Nis cancer cancer excuse me,
- 1:44:55Speaker 3: and it's Canter are using this to get attention. He
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: just wants you talking about him and there and a
- 1:45:05Speaker 3: bunch of the other people that you here talking about
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: it in the similar way that and his Canter is
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: trying to talk about They're trying to score a bunch
- 1:45:12Speaker 3: of political points, and you and I don't have to
- 1:45:15Speaker 3: help them with that.
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: Like it, it's okay to recognize that there is not
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: much of.
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: A threat with this and also agree that if this
- 1:45:23Speaker 3: were to become a threat, yes, we do not want
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: we want we want women not trans women playing women's
- 1:45:31Speaker 3: sports and girls' sports like that, it's okay to have
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: both of those things that you're thinking at the same time.
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: It's I think it's like it's a little bit grotesque
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: to be someone like in his Cantor, who is just
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: you know he it seems as he's sort of he's
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: a very politically minded individual, right, especially when you know
- 1:45:54Speaker 2: he's from Turkey.
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: He got himself banned from his home country because of
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: political advocacy.
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and he like I am, without having a ton
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: of knowledge of it, I am sympathetic to anyone who
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: feels like the ruling class, the leadership in their in
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: their country, is a danger to their their fellow countrymen
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: and fellow country women. And in his case, his family
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: felt felt like their rights were being suppressed and things
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: like that. By all means, go ahead, talk about that.
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: Advocate for or against whatever you want to advocate for
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: or against. This feels disingenuous, and in his canter showing
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: up at a game and getting into a verbal altercation
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: with players on the court and being removed from the game,
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: whether that was the right move for security to actually
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: kick him out of the game or not, it's like,
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: what are you doing there? Why are you putting yourself.
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: Why are you taking the cameras off the female athletes
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: as you that you are pretending to care about so much,
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: trying to be an advocate for what you are pretending
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: to be like, you know, in support of and wanted
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: to pret hecked from this like invisible boogeyman that is
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: not actually a real threat to them right now, why
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: are you now stealing shine from a league that can't
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: afford to keep having side shows happen? Right now, they
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: are having their moment. The WNBA is having their moment
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: of popularity, of rising attention, of revenue. The players just
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: got a new collective bargaining agreement where they ten xed
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: the minimum salary for bad not bad players, but for
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: like borderline players I mean. And yet they still can't
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: get out of their own way with some of the
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: actual administrative stuff, with the way that Caitlin Clark is
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: fouled all the time, with the way that their game
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: is refereed against one another, with the conversation, the sort
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: of sniping back and forth between the biggest players and
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: the top coaches and.
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: Things like that. It's like a perceived lack of leadership
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: from the commissioner. However, true, that is got real problems, man, Inness,
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: you don't need to be there adding to this.
- 1:48:02Speaker 3: Yeah, and listen, if you watch the video, he is
- 1:48:07Speaker 3: not He didn't make the first move. At least the
- 1:48:10Speaker 3: video that was posted, it didn't appear that he made
- 1:48:12Speaker 3: the first move and stepped out of the court to
- 1:48:14Speaker 3: try to approach the Chicago sky player who we got
- 1:48:18Speaker 3: into verbal altercation with. It seemed to be she saw
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: him and she got really pissed and she just made
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: a big bucket and she started she's feeling all the
- 1:48:31Speaker 3: adrenaline from that. She started talking and yelling at him
- 1:48:34Speaker 3: because she got really mad about what we're talking about,
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: the disingenuous stuff. The way that Ennis Canter is seemingly
- 1:48:44Speaker 3: inserted himself into this hot buttoned conversation and made himself
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: the center of it for this moment like that, I
- 1:48:53Speaker 3: think it's fair for her to have had that kind
- 1:48:56Speaker 3: of emotional reaction, and it's fair for her to be
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: talking ish because she's full of adrenaline from making a
- 1:49:03Speaker 3: big shot and you know, from playing in a tight,
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: hotly contested game.
- 1:49:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: I don't know that it was fair for Canter to
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: get thrown out, But also.
- 1:49:18Speaker 3: That doesn't mean that him being there, like you're like
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: you're explaining, oh see, doesn't mean that him being there
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: court side wearing the shirt that he was wearing, which
- 1:49:26Speaker 3: we don't need to go into that, Like you're trying
- 1:49:30Speaker 3: to instigate that reaction. You don't act like a victim
- 1:49:33Speaker 3: when you get thrown out after you get the reaction
- 1:49:36Speaker 3: you're clearly trying to instigate.
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: Well, And it's just very disingenuous, like you're saying.
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: If someone's gonna yell at you and like whatever, Like
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: he's been on the floor before, he's been in that
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: position where somebody said something he didn't like, somebody wore
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: something that he didn't like, and.
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: Maybe he said something, maybe he didn't.
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: I don't have the rolodex of every time I'm in
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: a scant had a conversation with somebody sitting courtside or not.
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: Video is not clear on that either.
- 1:50:06Speaker 4: Yet.
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: It's just weird, man, It's just a It's just it's
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: just a weird look.
- 1:50:09Speaker 2: And one of the things that bothers me about the
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: sort of modern pundit speaker trend in our country is that, like,
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: there are very important issues at play when it comes
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: to the gender politics and things like that, and we've
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: talked about them some on the show, and I made
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: my stance clear. I think that that those athletes, transgender athletes,
- 1:50:31Speaker 2: I think should be given an opportunity to compete in
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: their own space with other athletes that are that share
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: their identity, or that share their biology, or however way
- 1:50:45Speaker 2: you want to say that. I don't think anyone should
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: be kept from competing. I don't I don't think any
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: I think everyone should be given an opportunity. If that
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: means in high school sports, youth sports, pro sports, you
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: have separate categories, different leagues, I'm all for it, Like
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: let people participate in sport. I do think it's important
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: that biological females be competing only against unless they're in
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: co ed sports, only be competing against other from birth
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: biological females because there are physiological differences. That's not a
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: hateful thing to say, that's a practical thing to say.
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: I don't think it's bad that in his Canter has
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: that same belief. I do think that trying to make
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: yourself into some martyr about it, or trying to antagonize
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: about it is the dead.
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: Wrong thing to do.
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: I think that the moral thing to do, I think
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: that the Christian thing to do. I think that the
- 1:51:44Speaker 2: upstanding thing to do is to show compassion for people
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: who want to be participating in sports, who feel like
- 1:51:53Speaker 2: they don't have a place to Let's provide them a
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: place to without compromising the rights or safety, or happiness
- 1:52:01Speaker 2: or fairness for the majority. And pretending that this is
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: like your life's mission now when you jumped into the
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: conversation five minutes ago is disingenuous, and people who are
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: being that way should be called out for Yeah, there's
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: a there's a much better way of going about it,
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: and it's cancer if you are for real about.
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: Being an advocate for women's sports in this way.
- 1:52:29Speaker 3: There's a much there are there are many much better
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: ways to go about it, and I hope for the
- 1:52:37Speaker 3: sake of women's sports, we can get to a point
- 1:52:40Speaker 3: with the w NBA, as far as that's the main
- 1:52:44Speaker 3: league that everyone has their eyeballs on right now in
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: the summertime, NWSL, the AUSL Softball League, that we can
- 1:52:54Speaker 3: we can stop making mountains out of socio political storylines
- 1:53:02Speaker 3: and focus more on what they're doing on the court,
- 1:53:05Speaker 3: what great athletes they are because, yes, we make big
- 1:53:10Speaker 3: deals about socio political stuff that happened in men's games,
- 1:53:16Speaker 3: but they don't become the entire conversation though, the way
- 1:53:18Speaker 3: that it's becoming women's games. And I just think women
- 1:53:22Speaker 3: deserve to be talked about for their athletic prowess, just
- 1:53:25Speaker 3: like we talk about men for the athletic prowess. Amidst
- 1:53:28Speaker 3: a bunch of other controversy.
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: It was bad when everyone decided that Colin Kaepernick kneeling
- 1:53:34Speaker 2: down during a national anthem was the most important thing
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: in the world for them to have an opinion on.
- 1:53:39Speaker 2: That was a bad thing for the NFL, for sports fans,
- 1:53:42Speaker 2: for all like that was stupid for everyone to make
- 1:53:45Speaker 2: that the number one talking point of their political sport
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: locker room, water cooler conversation.
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: That sucked. That was dumb.
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: For Sophie Cuttingham to have said something to the effect
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: expressing kind of what I just expressed. And for people
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: to decide that that is the most important thing that's
- 1:54:07Speaker 2: going on in the WNBA right.
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: Now, that sucks, guys.
- 1:54:11Speaker 2: It does.
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: That is bad for the sport. That is bad for a.
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: League that five minutes ago finally got some attention, like
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: the NFL was always going to survive the Colin Kaepernick
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: thing and was always going to recover from the Colin
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: Kaepernick thing. But that was very polarizing for people, and
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: it was problematic for the NFL for a very short time.
- 1:54:33Speaker 2: And that league had already established itself as the king
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: of everything. The WNBA is nowhere near that status. And
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: this has crept in to become a major distraction and
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: a major detriment to what you're talking about, James, attention
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: being paid to the actual competition. It's a sports soap
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: opera right now instead of being a sports product.
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: And that sucks. Yeah, And.
- 1:55:00Speaker 3: And I say everything that I say not to be
- 1:55:02Speaker 3: like okay, and and everyone has a moral and ethical
- 1:55:05Speaker 3: obligation to watch women's sports. No, like, do whatever you want,
- 1:55:09Speaker 3: but let's let's give it the same kind of treatment
- 1:55:12Speaker 3: that we give men's sports. Amongst controversial stuff that's that's
- 1:55:16Speaker 3: bigger in the game. We still we still talk about
- 1:55:18Speaker 3: how great the games are. We still talk about how
- 1:55:20Speaker 3: great athletes they are. I think there's enough. There's plenty
- 1:55:24Speaker 3: of reason to be doing that if you if you
- 1:55:27Speaker 3: are someone that pays attention to WNBA covers sports like
- 1:55:30Speaker 3: we do and and there's there's talking points that come
- 1:55:33Speaker 3: up to I think there's plenty of reason to be
- 1:55:35Speaker 3: like to focus more on the games and be like
- 1:55:38Speaker 3: this and focus on the great athletic feats that they're
- 1:55:42Speaker 3: doing in WNBA and other women's sports.
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: That we talk I.
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: The way the NFL was able to like there was
- 1:55:50Speaker 2: a certain amount of fatigue over that whole conversation, right
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: and the way the NFL got over it was because
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: the conversation was always going to return to competition.
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: It was always going to return to who's gonna win
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: the Super Bowl?
- 1:56:02Speaker 2: Who is the best quarterback, who's the best running back,
- 1:56:04Speaker 2: who's the best wide receiver, who's the best defense? Right now,
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: it was always going to swing back to that, even
- 1:56:09Speaker 2: if it got distracting for a.
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: While with the socio political stuff. I don't know.
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: I can't speak with any level of confidence that the
- 1:56:17Speaker 2: WNBA is always going to swing back to Hey, look
- 1:56:21Speaker 2: at this Caitlin Clark, best shooter we can see in
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: basketball men or women like that, Like that's an exaggeration,
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: but whatever, you know what I mean, I'm not confident
- 1:56:32Speaker 2: that the WNBA is established enough that the conversation is
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: going to return eventually to the competition, Whereas there was
- 1:56:40Speaker 2: never a question it would after the Kaepernick thing, or
- 1:56:44Speaker 2: after the Ray Rice thing, or after any other innumerable
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: controversies that have happened in the NFL, we always knew
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: the conversation was going to return to the game. I
- 1:56:55Speaker 2: can't say with any level of confidence that the same
- 1:56:57Speaker 2: is true in the WNBA, and that is very, very unfortunate,
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: and it's why they need a new commissioner show better
- 1:57:03Speaker 2: leadership here and to push things in that direction.
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:57:08Speaker 2: I want to put I want you to put this
- 1:57:09Speaker 2: phone number in your phone right now. I want you
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: to take it out. I want you to go to

- 1:57:19Speaker 2: though I'm asking you to save that number in your phone,

- 1:57:24Speaker 2: because if you do, it means that you were probably
- 1:57:27Speaker 2: in an accident. Maybe you had a slip and fall

- 1:58:51Speaker 2: numbers I want to throw at you, and you're gonna
- 1:58:52Speaker 2: tell me if you talk and get over or under

- 1:59:17Speaker 9: for the best youths football coupley Here's o c from
- 1:59:20Speaker 9: the Murdoch Hundai Studio of ESPN seven hundred at ninety.
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: Two to one after am pell smile.
- 1:59:38Speaker 6: Nails.
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Shan o'connall Show.
- 1:59:47Speaker 2: Coming up in our next segment ten minutes from now,
- 1:59:50Speaker 2: we'll discuss a new list from the Athletic naming the
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: top teams from the last fifty years in college Paul
- 2:00:00Speaker 2: who have not yet won a national championship. Where does
- 2:00:04Speaker 2: Utah fall on that list? I will tell you in
- 2:00:07Speaker 2: ten minutes. Right now, I've got an over under I
- 2:00:09Speaker 2: want to explore with you. We talked about it. I
- 2:00:11Speaker 2: teased it with Zach Moss. We let him answer the
- 2:00:14Speaker 2: question first. The over under set for Utah passing yards
- 2:00:18Speaker 2: this coming season two nine and ninety nine point five.
- 2:00:23Speaker 2: Do they get over three thousand yards? Do they hit
- 2:00:26Speaker 2: three thousand yards or not in this Utah offense that
- 2:00:30Speaker 2: has knock On Wood, a healthy Devin Dampierre, that has
- 2:00:34Speaker 2: a wide receiver room that Morgan Scalley has said really
- 2:00:38Speaker 2: nice things about, that has some returning production, although it's
- 2:00:44Speaker 2: player returning production from a passing a pass receiving standpoint,
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: that has a couple of Swiss Army knife type players
- 2:00:52Speaker 2: that will be catching some passes.
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: Things like that. To give it context, three thousand yards
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: would make Utah.
- 2:01:04Speaker 2: The sixth best in last year's offense last year's last
- 2:01:09Speaker 2: year's conference, I should say three thousand passing yards would
- 2:01:14Speaker 2: put them right behind Cincinnati, who had three thousand and six.
- 2:01:18Speaker 2: So let's say you get over three thousand, You're probably
- 2:01:21Speaker 2: not gonna get exactly three thousand. You'd be right there
- 2:01:23Speaker 2: in that top five with Cincinnati from last year. Just
- 2:01:27Speaker 2: being a good passing team by itself, by the way,
- 2:01:30Speaker 2: does not win you a ton of games. Byu runner
- 2:01:36Speaker 2: up in the conference last year was eighth in the
- 2:01:38Speaker 2: conference in passing yards. In passing yards per game, I
- 2:01:46Speaker 2: should say total yardage over three thousand or under three
- 2:01:54Speaker 2: thousand for the University of Utah twenty nine ninety nine
- 2:02:00Speaker 2: point five TCU three thousand, eight hundred and ninety nine
- 2:02:06Speaker 2: passing yards. Excuse me, Texas Tech had that TCU three thousand,
- 2:02:11Speaker 2: seven hundred and seventy one, Baylor three thousand, seven hundred
- 2:02:16Speaker 2: and fifteen, Arizona three thousand, three hundred and eighteen, BYU
- 2:02:20Speaker 2: three thousand, one hundred, Cincinnati three thousand and six. Remember
- 2:02:25Speaker 2: when we were talking about passing yards per game last
- 2:02:28Speaker 2: week and trying to get over two hundred and thirty
- 2:02:30Speaker 2: five yards per game in the passing world, I think
- 2:02:34Speaker 2: Utah again, I think this is a threshold that you
- 2:02:36Speaker 2: kind of have to reach.
- 2:02:39Speaker 1: For two reasons.
- 2:02:40Speaker 2: I think you're not gonna have the number one rushing
- 2:02:43Speaker 2: offense in the conference this year like you did last
- 2:02:45Speaker 2: year with Utah. They'll still be top five in that category.
- 2:02:49Speaker 2: They'll still be very respectable in that category. They've got
- 2:02:52Speaker 2: the quarterback and running back personnel to do it. To
- 2:02:54Speaker 2: be determined if they have the offensive line personnel to
- 2:02:58Speaker 2: do it. And that same question when it comes to
- 2:03:00Speaker 2: the passing game. So as you're asking yourself this question,
- 2:03:03Speaker 2: can you hit three thousand yards or more in the
- 2:03:06Speaker 2: passing game, it is, of course dependent on your quarterback first,
- 2:03:10Speaker 2: and foremost. Secondarily, I do believe it's dependent on your
- 2:03:13Speaker 2: offensive line. I think that the wide receiver room that
- 2:03:16Speaker 2: we're optimistic about is actually the third most.
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: Important piece of this equation.
- 2:03:20Speaker 2: For the University of Utah, having great pass catchers is
- 2:03:28Speaker 2: a wonderful thing. It's especially wonderful if your quarterback can
- 2:03:32Speaker 2: stay up right in the pocket. It's fantastic if your
- 2:03:38Speaker 2: quarterback has the arm and the accuracy to deliver the
- 2:03:41Speaker 2: ball to those pass catchers. The pass catchers are the egg.
- 2:03:46Speaker 2: They're not the chicken. The chicken is the passer.
- 2:03:52Speaker 1: And maybe.
- 2:03:54Speaker 2: Even more than well, the offensive line is like the
- 2:03:58Speaker 2: chicken coop in the chicken in the egg conversation. Does
- 2:04:03Speaker 2: the chicken have a safe place from which to lay
- 2:04:06Speaker 2: its egg? That's where the offensive line comes in. Three
- 2:04:14Speaker 2: thousand yards will Utah hit it over under twenty nine
- 2:04:19Speaker 2: to ninety nine point five for this Utah football offense?
- 2:04:24Speaker 2: Eight seven to seven three five three zero seven hundred.
- 2:04:27Speaker 2: Tell me what you think about that number total on
- 2:04:30Speaker 2: the Utah football front, all right? Who is the best
- 2:04:35Speaker 2: college football program without a national title in the last
- 2:04:39Speaker 2: fifty years? Antonio Morales of the Athletic assigned a scoring
- 2:04:45Speaker 2: system all right, National championship game appearance ten points, AP
- 2:04:50Speaker 2: top five finish eight points, Conference championship six points, a
- 2:04:55Speaker 2: major Bowl game, a BCS game, a New Year's Six game,
- 2:04:57Speaker 2: a college football appearance four points, a ten win season
- 2:05:01Speaker 2: two points, a top twenty five finished two points, and
- 2:05:04Speaker 2: if you had back to back losing seasons, you got
- 2:05:06Speaker 2: doctor point. Those are the scoring criteria over the last
- 2:05:11Speaker 2: fifty years of college football. Who is the best team
- 2:05:15Speaker 2: without a title in the last fifty years? Where does
- 2:05:20Speaker 2: Utah fall on this ranking? We'll get to that next
- 2:05:23Speaker 2: on the Sean O'Connell Shows, Utah's number one sports talk
- 2:05:26Speaker 2: ESPN seven hundred and ninety two one FM.
- 2:05:36Speaker 7: Tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show for the Murdoch Chevrolet
- 2:05:39Speaker 7: Studio of ESPN seven hundred and ninety two one half.
- 2:05:43Speaker 2: Am Oh, Finally, a list from the Athletic that's going
- 2:05:53Speaker 2: to put the Utah BYU longevity of relevance debate to
- 2:06:01Speaker 2: I'm sure that nobody in provo or wearing Royal blue
- 2:06:07Speaker 2: or the stolen Aggie blue that they adopted for a while.
- 2:06:11Speaker 2: I'm sure none of them will disagree with what the
- 2:06:13Speaker 2: Athletic has to say. About the top teams, the top
- 2:06:17Speaker 2: college football programs of the last fifty years that have
- 2:06:20Speaker 2: not won a national title. Who is the best program
- 2:06:24Speaker 2: in the national landscape of college football that has not
- 2:06:27Speaker 2: won at all?
- 2:06:30Speaker 1: James, you haven't looked at this, right, I have not.
- 2:06:34Speaker 2: Okay, I gave you the criteria that was established by
- 2:06:39Speaker 2: an Antonio Morales.
- 2:06:40Speaker 1: I love pieces like this where he just kind of
- 2:06:42Speaker 1: like made this up.
- 2:06:43Speaker 2: You get ten points if you played international championship game
- 2:06:46Speaker 2: but you didn't win. Just the signing points arbitrarily is wonderful,
- 2:06:50Speaker 2: but he obviously put a lot of thought to it.
- 2:06:52Speaker 2: Ten points for a championship game appearance, eight points for
- 2:06:57Speaker 2: a top five finish in the Associated Press POL, six
- 2:07:01Speaker 2: points for a conference championship, four points for a major
- 2:07:05Speaker 2: bowl appearance. That's BCS new Year six College Football Playoff
- 2:07:09Speaker 2: because the last fifty years have seen a lot of
- 2:07:11Speaker 2: alteration of what's considered the most major bowls, a lot
- 2:07:15Speaker 2: of new terminology with all that. Yeah, ten win seasons
- 2:07:18Speaker 2: are good for two points. Top twenty five finishes are
- 2:07:22Speaker 2: good for two points. That's top twenty five outside of
- 2:07:24Speaker 2: the top five. And then if you have consecutive losing seasons,
- 2:07:28Speaker 2: they docu a point for each consecutive losing season.
- 2:07:32Speaker 1: Based on that.
- 2:07:33Speaker 2: Scoring criteria, the best program of the last fifty years
- 2:07:36Speaker 2: that has not won a national championship is is it Oregon?
- 2:07:40Speaker 1: It's Oregon.
- 2:07:42Speaker 2: Oregon has two national championship game appearances for twenty points.
- 2:07:46Speaker 2: They finished in the top five eight times. Yeah, it's
- 2:07:52Speaker 2: a lot.
- 2:07:52Speaker 3: They have been a national championship caliber program for a
- 2:07:57Speaker 3: very long time at this.
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: Point, without actually winning when they win it.
- 2:08:00Speaker 2: Yeah, in fifty years, they've won ten conference championships, They've
- 2:08:03Speaker 2: been in twelve major bowl games. They've had sixteen ten
- 2:08:08Speaker 2: win seasons. They finished inside the top twenty five, but
- 2:08:12Speaker 2: outside of the top five thirteen times, bringing the total
- 2:08:16Speaker 2: to twenty one.
- 2:08:18Speaker 3: Man, that thirteen times. As impressive as that is. Oh
- 2:08:24Speaker 3: see that almost seems low. Yeah, because since was it
- 2:08:29Speaker 3: Dennis Dixon mid mid to late two thousands, almost twenty
- 2:08:33Speaker 3: years ago?
- 2:08:34Speaker 1: Now?
- 2:08:34Speaker 3: Since then, it feels like they've always finished in the
- 2:08:36Speaker 3: top twenty five. But apparently no, So.
- 2:08:40Speaker 2: Oregon is the number one program to never have won
- 2:08:43Speaker 2: a national championship according to this criteria. Number two is
- 2:08:47Speaker 2: one that actually surprised me more. Oregon made sense. You
- 2:08:51Speaker 2: got the guests number two. You want to take a
- 2:08:54Speaker 2: crack at number two. See it's a surprising one to you.
- 2:09:00Speaker 2: For me, it was surprising. Probably recency bias. I'm blanking
- 2:09:07Speaker 2: right now. I've enjoyed making fun of their ineptitude as
- 2:09:10Speaker 2: of late. But again, this goes back fifty years. Texas
- 2:09:13Speaker 2: A and MH is the number two. They've had zero
- 2:09:16Speaker 2: championship game appearances. They've had two top five finishes, They've
- 2:09:21Speaker 2: had seven conference championships in the last fifty years. They've
- 2:09:24Speaker 2: been in ten major bowl games and had ten ten
- 2:09:28Speaker 2: win seasons. They've also finished in the top twenty five
- 2:09:31Speaker 2: nineteen times, so more times in Oregon, more times than Oregon.
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: See that's surprising.
- 2:09:36Speaker 2: You know what's crazy too, They've only had one back
- 2:09:41Speaker 2: to back losing season scenario at Texas A and M
- 2:09:44Speaker 2: in the last fifty years, since the late seven mid seventies.
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: I guess is what that would be.
- 2:09:49Speaker 2: Number three on this list is Virginia Tech, the number
- 2:09:54Speaker 2: one in the Big Twelve Conference comes in at number
- 2:09:58Speaker 2: four on the list.
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: Which Big twelve team is.
- 2:10:01Speaker 3: This number four on the list, number four nationally and
- 2:10:05Speaker 3: it is a Big twelve teams at Oklahoma State. It
- 2:10:08Speaker 3: is TCU.
- 2:10:09Speaker 2: TCU one championship game appearance, three top five finishes, nine
- 2:10:16Speaker 2: conference championships, four major bowl game appearances, thirteen to ten
- 2:10:20Speaker 2: win seasons, and eleven times they've finished in the top
- 2:10:24Speaker 2: twenty five.
- 2:10:25Speaker 1: But they also got docked severely.
- 2:10:27Speaker 2: They've had back to back to back losing seasons to
- 2:10:30Speaker 2: the tune of minus fourteen points, so they got one
- 2:10:32Speaker 2: hundred and thirty eight.
- 2:10:34Speaker 1: One hundred and thirty eight points. Really, it was.
- 2:10:38Speaker 2: All of this, this goes back fifty years. All of
- 2:10:40Speaker 2: this has since two thousand, basically.
- 2:10:42Speaker 3: Yeah, because with TCU and you could say similarly to Oregon, Virginia,
- 2:10:49Speaker 3: Texas a similar one. You maybe go back to nineteen
- 2:10:52Speaker 3: ninety with them, nineteen ninety to like twenty ten, that
- 2:10:56Speaker 3: those twenty years is where they they made all that
- 2:10:59Speaker 3: Hey there with Texas A and M I was going
- 2:11:02Speaker 3: to say it's the opposite.
- 2:11:04Speaker 1: It's like.
- 2:11:06Speaker 3: Without looking at the data. Probably the data probably proves
- 2:11:09Speaker 3: this perception wrong a little bit. But the perception for
- 2:11:13Speaker 3: me OC is from nineteen seventy six or seventy five whatever,
- 2:11:17Speaker 3: the first year with this is to the two to
- 2:11:21Speaker 3: two thousand was when they probably racked up most of
- 2:11:24Speaker 3: those points.
- 2:11:25Speaker 2: You're absolutely right. They've only had three ten win seasons.
- 2:11:29Speaker 2: Of their ten, only three of those have been in
- 2:11:31Speaker 2: the last thirty years. They haven't had a conference titles
- 2:11:34Speaker 2: since nineteen ninety eight.
- 2:11:35Speaker 3: It doesn't surprise me OC because it's like Texas A
- 2:11:38Speaker 3: and M is one of those traditional not blue bloods
- 2:11:44Speaker 3: because they're not a championship team, but traditional uperrational on programs.
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: They're like that, haven't done much lately.
- 2:11:53Speaker 2: Yeah, So TCU the top Big twelve team, and obviously
- 2:11:59Speaker 2: part of their earnings here in the points was when
- 2:12:02Speaker 2: they were a mount West Conference team with Utah and
- 2:12:04Speaker 2: BYU there. UCLA is very similar to Texas A and M.
- 2:12:10Speaker 2: What have you done for me lately?
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: Not much?
- 2:12:12Speaker 2: But they're number five on this list according to scoring criteria.
- 2:12:15Speaker 2: They haven't appeared in a major bowl game since nineteen
- 2:12:18Speaker 2: ninety eight, when they were in the Rose Bowl. Wow,
- 2:12:21Speaker 2: So they accomplished a lot before that. They also have
- 2:12:25Speaker 2: one national title from nineteen fifty four that they claim
- 2:12:28Speaker 2: but doesn't count on this list because this one only
- 2:12:31Speaker 2: goes back to nineteen seventy six. This is fIF in
- 2:12:34Speaker 2: the last fifty years. How many national Number six on
- 2:12:36Speaker 2: the list is Wisconsin. Number seven is Iowa, Number eight
- 2:12:41Speaker 2: is West Virginia. Number nine is the University of Utah. So,
- 2:12:47Speaker 2: according to the Athletics Scoring Criteria, the ninth best non
- 2:12:51Speaker 2: national championship program in the last fifty years of college.
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: Football is the University of Utah.
- 2:12:57Speaker 2: So their top ten in the country in the last
- 2:13:00Speaker 2: fifty years in terms of teams that have not achieved
- 2:13:04Speaker 2: national championship status.
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: Their top ten.
- 2:13:06Speaker 3: So you're saying they're top ten of the teams that
- 2:13:08Speaker 3: are probably somewhere near top fifteen in the country.
- 2:13:11Speaker 2: Every year their top ten, they're number nine of the
- 2:13:14Speaker 2: top seventeen or so. No national championship game appearances, two
- 2:13:20Speaker 2: ap top five finishes, seven conference championships, four times, they've
- 2:13:26Speaker 2: played in a BCS New Year, six Big Time Bowl,
- 2:13:30Speaker 2: eleven to ten win seasons, ten top twenty five finishes,
- 2:13:36Speaker 2: and in the last fifty years they've been docked five
- 2:13:39Speaker 2: points for back to back losing seasons.
- 2:13:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:13:41Speaker 3: See, there's just been a lot of consistency and a
- 2:13:46Speaker 3: high floor, if you will, from Utah football. The worst years,
- 2:13:51Speaker 3: even in the worst years that they've had, not many
- 2:13:54Speaker 3: of those have been losing seasons. We can name three
- 2:13:59Speaker 3: in the last fifteen years. But like, there's so many
- 2:14:04Speaker 3: more programs that in a fifteen year span and a
- 2:14:08Speaker 3: fifty year span that have had way more of those
- 2:14:12Speaker 3: losing seasons consecutively or otherwise than Utah, which is which
- 2:14:18Speaker 3: is a thing that you should be proud of if
- 2:14:19Speaker 3: you're a Utah a football fan, and that program should
- 2:14:22Speaker 3: be proud of. And again, basically all this work has
- 2:14:25Speaker 3: been done in since the mid nineties, since Rodney Bride.
- 2:14:30Speaker 2: Basically all of it has been since him. Houston is
- 2:14:33Speaker 2: number ten on this list, and then it goes Michigan State,
- 2:14:37Speaker 2: Arizona State, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Stanford, Syracuse, Baylor, Kansas State, Louisville,
- 2:14:45Speaker 2: Oklahoma State. So dang near the whole Big twelve Conference
- 2:14:50Speaker 2: is on this list somewhere, but.
- 2:14:54Speaker 1: BYU is not.
- 2:14:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's I will say this part of the scoring
- 2:14:59Speaker 2: criteria is conference championships and independence for a decade means
- 2:15:06Speaker 2: you can't earn any points there.
- 2:15:07Speaker 3: There's that, And I wonder if they're eighty four National
- 2:15:11Speaker 3: championship disqualified them two, But I don't know if it's.
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: Oh wait, no, it would You're right, that's the whole,
- 2:15:19Speaker 1: that's the whole. Yes, that's it. I guess that's it.
- 2:15:21Speaker 1: They won.
- 2:15:21Speaker 2: You're right, I'm an idiot because this list goes back
- 2:15:24Speaker 2: past nineteen eighty four. So BYU is one of those
- 2:15:27Speaker 2: national champ program.
- 2:15:28Speaker 3: The reason I said that kind of as a question
- 2:15:30Speaker 3: is because I don't know if if the the athletic
- 2:15:38Speaker 3: are you.
- 2:15:38Speaker 1: Saying athletics doesn't universally recognize there?
- 2:15:41Speaker 3: Well, I did national championship, which which type of national
- 2:15:45Speaker 3: championship is universally recognized? Because that was the Coaches Pole
- 2:15:51Speaker 3: Championship for BYU, And there's also the Associated Press Poll
- 2:15:55Speaker 3: champion that used to be, and then you had the
- 2:16:00Speaker 3: BCS champion, which was the computers, and then AP still
- 2:16:04Speaker 3: name their own. There's it's very convoluted. It's almost in
- 2:16:08Speaker 3: the like the combat sports world, all the different belts.
- 2:16:10Speaker 2: You can win well, but b y U was consensus
- 2:16:14Speaker 2: national time AP coaches and writers.
- 2:16:18Speaker 3: They were on the undefeated team in the nation that year. Okay,
- 2:16:22Speaker 3: that's my bad. I I thought it was the Coaches
- 2:16:26Speaker 3: Poll champion. They were the consensus champion. So consensus meaning
- 2:16:31Speaker 3: not all of those polls, but enough of those to
- 2:16:36Speaker 3: say you're the you're the undisputed champion. Okay, So the
- 2:16:39Speaker 3: Red aut Sorry Kook's fans, I did not mean to
- 2:16:42Speaker 3: enact violence on you with with my, with my.
- 2:16:45Speaker 2: I think more importantly the rest of the Big twelve,
- 2:16:47Speaker 2: So Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Baylor, Cincinnati, Arizona State, Houston, Utah, TCU.
- 2:16:59Speaker 2: That is eighteen from the sixteen team conference that are
- 2:17:03Speaker 2: among the bridesmaids, but never the brides.
- 2:17:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and there's trying to think of Iowa State is
- 2:17:10Speaker 3: not listed, right or were they? Iowa States them not
- 2:17:13Speaker 3: listed here? If they're not, they're a non national champion
- 2:17:16Speaker 3: that that did not make the list, did not qualify
- 2:17:20Speaker 3: for this list. There's Kansas that would have been Texas
- 2:17:28Speaker 3: Texas Tech was not there or was Texas Tech in there?
- 2:17:31Speaker 1: Texas Tech is not on this list. And because it
- 2:17:34Speaker 1: goes back fifty years.
- 2:17:37Speaker 3: I don't think that they've won they had won a
- 2:17:40Speaker 3: national championship in the seventies or eighties, Texas Tech.
- 2:17:47Speaker 1: You got Arizona also not that did not qualify for
- 2:17:53Speaker 1: this list.
- 2:17:53Speaker 2: Tech as a champion has only won four national championships
- 2:17:58Speaker 2: in athletics history. Yeah, they won the women's basketball in
- 2:18:02Speaker 2: nineteen ninety three with Cheryl Swoops. Dwops they won the
- 2:18:08Speaker 2: men's outdoor track and Field Championship in twenty nineteen, and
- 2:18:14Speaker 2: they've won indoor track and field in twenty twenty four
- 2:18:17Speaker 2: and this.
- 2:18:18Speaker 1: Last year in twenty twenty six.
- 2:18:20Speaker 3: Okay, so track and Field Power Texas Tech. I actually
- 2:18:23Speaker 3: didn't even know that. I didn't know that either. So
- 2:18:26Speaker 3: there's at least four of the other teams that didn't
- 2:18:32Speaker 3: they were not national championship winners as far as we
- 2:18:35Speaker 3: know in the last fifty years, but did not qualify
- 2:18:39Speaker 3: for this list, did not get did not score high
- 2:18:41Speaker 3: enough on this list. So there's at least twelve Big
- 2:18:43Speaker 3: Twelve teams that would have been that could be on
- 2:18:49Speaker 3: this list BYU might be it's the only one I'm
- 2:18:53Speaker 3: thinking of right now of the current Big twelve teams
- 2:18:56Speaker 3: that has won a national championship in fifty years, and.
- 2:18:59Speaker 2: Colorad out of Colorado, that's right. Colorado won in nineteen ninety, so.
- 2:19:04Speaker 1: Maybe two.
- 2:19:06Speaker 3: So the other So there's fourteen potentially that could have
- 2:19:10Speaker 3: qualified to be on this list, but eight of them
- 2:19:12Speaker 3: made it. You love to see it, yeah, Actually you
- 2:19:16Speaker 3: hate to see it because it means that you're not
- 2:19:20Speaker 3: among the Indiana's, Ohio States, Michigan's Georgia's, Alabama's Clemsons, LSUS,
- 2:19:26Speaker 3: Florida States, et cetera.
- 2:19:28Speaker 1: That don't have to carry the dubious distinction of being
- 2:19:31Speaker 1: a great team that just quite can't quite get it done.
- 2:19:35Speaker 3: The other kind of sucky thing for the conference from
- 2:19:38Speaker 3: if you view it from this lens, is they're two
- 2:19:41Speaker 3: champions in the last fifty years. Were those championships are
- 2:19:45Speaker 3: thirty six and what forty two years old? So that's
- 2:19:51Speaker 3: that's the other unfortunate thing. It's almost like they honorary
- 2:19:56Speaker 3: not champion because it was that long ago. You can't
- 2:20:00Speaker 3: really say that about obviously the Big Ten winning last
- 2:20:04Speaker 3: three years, SEC dominating for so many years before that,
- 2:20:07Speaker 3: Clemson in Florida State in Miami holding the flag, holding
- 2:20:12Speaker 3: the banner for acc many times in those fifty years.
- 2:20:17Speaker 3: Big twelve's kind of the only ones that, unfortunately can
- 2:20:21Speaker 3: say that.
- 2:20:21Speaker 2: Nineteen ninety turns out was the biggest year in college
- 2:20:25Speaker 2: football history for the current Big twelve. Okay, because that
- 2:20:30Speaker 2: year the current Big Twelve won the national championship and
- 2:20:33Speaker 2: the Heisman Trophy. Colorado won the National championship. Ty Detmer
- 2:20:38Speaker 2: won the Heisman Trophy. Oh Kansas State.
- 2:20:41Speaker 3: That might have been at the beginning of Bill Snyder's
- 2:20:44Speaker 3: big run of them, like never missing a bowl game
- 2:20:47Speaker 3: and hardly ever winning less than double digit games.
- 2:20:51Speaker 1: Too.
- 2:20:51Speaker 3: There's like a twelve to fifteen year run of that
- 2:20:54Speaker 3: at Kansas State, and that was near the beginning of that.
- 2:20:56Speaker 3: So yeah, the early nineties were huge for the current
- 2:20:59Speaker 3: Big twelve.
- 2:21:03Speaker 1: Who's the last Ohio State Buckeye to win the Heisman Trophy?
- 2:21:10Speaker 1: Troy Smith? I think is he? I'm looking down the
- 2:21:15Speaker 1: list right, so.
- 2:21:15Speaker 3: I'm missing unless I'm missing somebody since two thousand and six.
- 2:21:22Speaker 1: No, you're right, Troy Smith.
- 2:21:23Speaker 3: He's the only one because I've been a fan since
- 2:21:27Speaker 3: about the turn of the century, so he's the only
- 2:21:31Speaker 3: one that I have actually been that I've actually, you know,
- 2:21:35Speaker 3: watched as an Ohio State fan.
- 2:21:37Speaker 2: W that's actually kind of a long time you would
- 2:21:39Speaker 2: for Ohio State. Yeah, thanks for rubbing that in. Who
- 2:21:43Speaker 2: won the national championship that year?
- 2:21:45Speaker 1: You know six? I don't want to talk about it.
- 2:21:48Speaker 3: That was there was a certain lopsided anagram type score
- 2:21:55Speaker 3: that I that I refuse to think about. Oh see,
- 2:21:57Speaker 3: I'm sorry, weird. Your former coach may have coached the
- 2:22:02Speaker 3: national champions You may.
- 2:22:04Speaker 2: Have all right, great stuff from the Athletic Utah, the
- 2:22:11Speaker 2: ninth best non national championship winning team in the history.
- 2:22:16Speaker 1: Of college football.
- 2:22:19Speaker 2: You've heard me give you the number eighth, one eighty
- 2:22:21Speaker 2: five ninety one, many many times. You've heard me tell
- 2:22:25Speaker 2: you that Advance Windows Advanced Window Products, the number one
- 2:22:29Speaker 2: window replacement company in Utah, lifetime warranty. I've given you
- 2:22:34Speaker 2: all of the checkpoints I think you need. But let
- 2:22:36Speaker 2: me tell you something. Let me give you, like the
- 2:22:38Speaker 2: the alternative path here. If you don't call Advanced Windows
- 2:22:42Speaker 2: and you don't get a lifetime warranty on the windows,
- 2:22:45Speaker 2: and you don't go with the number one quality a
- 2:22:47Speaker 2: company that keeps improving their product over and over and
- 2:22:52Speaker 2: over again, and the attention to detail is there, and
- 2:22:55Speaker 2: the service is there, let me tell you what else
- 2:22:57Speaker 2: can happen?
- 2:22:57Speaker 1: All right?
- 2:22:58Speaker 2: I've lived in my current at home for six years now,
- 2:23:02Speaker 2: and we remodeled the house. We bought it in the
- 2:23:04Speaker 2: avenues after I won my big fight.
- 2:23:07Speaker 1: We bought a house.
- 2:23:08Speaker 2: We put a bunch of cash into remodeling this thing, okay,
- 2:23:12Speaker 2: and part of that was replacing windows in the house.
- 2:23:17Speaker 2: And you get twenty five hundred dollars off ten windows
- 2:23:19Speaker 2: or more from Advanced Window products.
- 2:23:24Speaker 1: We replaced like twenty eight windows or something stupid.
- 2:23:27Speaker 2: Okay, it was an expensive remodel project, and I'm not
- 2:23:32Speaker 2: telling you that just to complain. What I want to
- 2:23:34Speaker 2: complain about, though, is the fact that we did have
- 2:23:37Speaker 2: some problems with our vinyl replacement windows, with the frames
- 2:23:43Speaker 2: expanding in the heat and then shrinking in the cold,
- 2:23:48Speaker 2: and it causing some warping and some cracking on the
- 2:23:51Speaker 2: vinyl window frames, which, by the way, Advanced window products
- 2:23:55Speaker 2: their frames don't do that. The company we went with
- 2:23:58Speaker 2: that was a problem, right, and of course they were
- 2:24:02Speaker 2: newish windows at the time. So I made a phone
- 2:24:04Speaker 2: call and I was like, hey, you need to fix
- 2:24:06Speaker 2: this for me, and the run around I got was
- 2:24:08Speaker 2: absolutely ridiculous and is a reason enough that I will
- 2:24:12Speaker 2: never go with anyone besides Advanced Window Products for the
- 2:24:15Speaker 2: rest of my ownership of a home.
- 2:24:20Speaker 1: Because there was no lifetime warranty.
- 2:24:21Speaker 2: There was no one stop shop, there was no well
- 2:24:24Speaker 2: the salesperson and the installer and the warranty is all
- 2:24:28Speaker 2: handled by one person. It was a factory window installed
- 2:24:33Speaker 2: by someone who's a license contractor sold by someone to
- 2:24:38Speaker 2: that license contractor who is not actually an employee of
- 2:24:42Speaker 2: the factory, and so everyone like that Spider Man Meme
- 2:24:46Speaker 2: was just pointing at the other guy, saying, it's his problem.
- 2:24:49Speaker 1: He's got to fix it. It's his problem. He's got
- 2:24:50Speaker 1: to fix it. Yes, it's under warranty, but he's the
- 2:24:53Speaker 1: one who has.
- 2:24:54Speaker 2: To pay for the replacement. He's the one who has
- 2:24:56Speaker 2: to eat the cost. It took me in months to
- 2:25:01Speaker 2: get this thing resolved.
- 2:25:03Speaker 1: That is not the case.
- 2:25:04Speaker 2: It Advanced Window Products eighth one eighty five oh ninety
- 2:25:07Speaker 2: one hundred. That's the call you make to get the
- 2:25:10Speaker 2: sales team on the phone to get the quote for
- 2:25:12Speaker 2: new windows to get the twenty.
- 2:25:14Speaker 1: Five hundred dollars off when you buy ten windows or more.
- 2:25:16Speaker 2: And if you call that same number ten years from
- 2:25:19Speaker 2: now when you have some unexpected problem with the window,
- 2:25:23Speaker 2: they're gonna answer. They're gonna say, yeah, we'll fix that window,
- 2:25:25Speaker 2: because it's ours. It was our installer, it was our salesperson,
- 2:25:29Speaker 2: it was our window manufactured right here in Salt Lake City.
- 2:25:34Speaker 2: Do yourself a favor, avoid the run around that I got.
- 2:25:38Speaker 2: Advance Windows dot Com telemoc sent you. We've got four
- 2:25:43Speaker 2: passes to the Utah State Fair coming up September tenth
- 2:25:47Speaker 2: through the twentieth at the Fair Park. We'll give those
- 2:25:50Speaker 2: away with some topical trivia next on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 2:25:53Speaker 2: ESPN seven hundred and ninety two one FM.
- 2:25:55Speaker 1: That's me in the Corner.
- 2:25:59Speaker 7: You two today on o'connells show for the Murdochrolet Studio
- 2:26:03Speaker 7: of ninety two.
- 2:26:06Speaker 8: One time.
- 2:26:18Speaker 2: Said more passes to the Utah State Fair coming out
- 2:26:27Speaker 2: September tenth through the twentieth at the Fair Park. If
- 2:26:30Speaker 2: you could answer this question at eight seven seven three
- 2:26:32Speaker 2: five three zero seven hundred, I asked an over over
- 2:26:37Speaker 2: under question on Utah's passing offense? Can they hit over
- 2:26:41Speaker 2: three thy twenty nine to ninety nine point five this
- 2:26:44Speaker 2: upcoming season?
- 2:26:45Speaker 1: Are you going over or under that number?
- 2:26:50Speaker 2: Let's say let's say they had hit three thousand last year,
- 2:26:55Speaker 2: probably win one extra game. Where did Utah's passing offense
- 2:27:00Speaker 2: it's rank in the Big twelve Conference last year? We
- 2:27:02Speaker 2: talked about it during the segment. Where did Utah's passing
- 2:27:06Speaker 2: offense rank in last year's Big twelve Conference? You can
- 2:27:09Speaker 2: tell me where out of sixteen teams they came in
- 2:27:14Speaker 2: with their total passing yardage. You'll get four passes. The
- 2:27:18Speaker 2: Utah State Fair coming up at the Fair Park September
- 2:27:21Speaker 2: tenth through the twentieth. The drive with Spence. Check its
- 2:27:27Speaker 2: is next. He's back in the chair. He's here with me.
- 2:27:29Speaker 2: How are you Spence?
- 2:27:32Speaker 1: As a world traveler?
- 2:27:34Speaker 4: Meaning you?
- 2:27:37Speaker 1: Because I was in Orlando over the weekend, I was
- 2:27:41Speaker 1: in Tampa. You should have come to the fights? Oh
- 2:27:43Speaker 1: were you in Tampa?
- 2:27:43Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 2:27:46Speaker 11: I actually should have. We did Universal. Have you ever
- 2:27:47Speaker 11: been to Universal Studios? I have got some good roller coasters.
- 2:27:51Speaker 11: Man your boy over here at Harry Potter World. Yeah,
- 2:27:54Speaker 11: Harry Potter World was awesome. Butter beer sped out.
- 2:27:57Speaker 7: I did.
- 2:27:57Speaker 1: I did, even as a non Harry Potter. I'm not
- 2:28:01Speaker 1: a hater. I just don't anything about it. Yeah. Quidditch, Yeah, okay,
- 2:28:05Speaker 1: good job. Good reference. Voldemort. We're not supposed to say
- 2:28:08Speaker 1: his name. We can here. We're safe from him. Which
- 2:28:11Speaker 1: house are you in? I'm a Gryffindor obviously, Oh okay,
- 2:28:16Speaker 1: isn't that supposed to be the most awesome one? Anyway?
- 2:28:20Speaker 1: What's this?
- 2:28:21Speaker 11: Because our travel scenario was such a nightmare, I got
- 2:28:26Speaker 11: back we were supposed to get back at one thirty
- 2:28:29Speaker 11: and then it turned to six thirty. I got home
- 2:28:31Speaker 11: at midnight. Oh and it's we experienced a new travel fatball.
- 2:28:37Speaker 11: So apparently the guy who was supposed to fill up
- 2:28:40Speaker 11: the plane with gas, like I don't know what the
- 2:28:44Speaker 11: equivalent of a pump is in for a plane. Yeah,
- 2:28:48Speaker 11: but he put the gas pump or whatever in the
- 2:28:50Speaker 11: plane and then like took a coffee break or something
- 2:28:54Speaker 11: overfilled massively. Okay, massive gas spill on the tarmac. Suddenly
- 2:29:00Speaker 11: we're surrounded by emergency vehicles. And then it turned into
- 2:29:06Speaker 11: the whole like the mechanic is like I got to
- 2:29:08Speaker 11: finish my log, Like, dude, get us in the air
- 2:29:10Speaker 11: and finish your log when we're flying. I wondered, with
- 2:29:15Speaker 11: all your travels, you must have some wild delay stories.
- 2:29:19Speaker 11: And I don't know that there's anything worse than sitting
- 2:29:22Speaker 11: on a tarmac in an airplane for six hours.
- 2:29:26Speaker 1: It's bad. Yeah, it's really bad that one.
- 2:29:30Speaker 2: I can't decide if it's better or worse when it's
- 2:29:33Speaker 2: like something like that where you're just like, oh jeez, okay,
- 2:29:36Speaker 2: that's like actually problematic.
- 2:29:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:29:38Speaker 2: The most aggravating thing is when they're just like, yeah,
- 2:29:42Speaker 2: so this happened. This is the most recent delay I experienced,
- 2:29:46Speaker 2: so apparently I didn't even know this until two weeks
- 2:29:50Speaker 2: ago when they closed the door. Part of closing the
- 2:29:55Speaker 2: door is they pressurize the emergency slides inside the door.
- 2:30:00Speaker 2: It like fills up with air while it's inside the door,
- 2:30:03Speaker 2: so that in the event of an emergency, you can
- 2:30:07Speaker 2: blast that door open and the slide is like already
- 2:30:10Speaker 2: just trying to expand out of the door. It's already
- 2:30:13Speaker 2: like filled up and ready to go. Right, I didn't
- 2:30:17Speaker 2: even know that. But get on the plane. They're like,
- 2:30:21Speaker 2: all right, we're ready to take off. The boarding door
- 2:30:24Speaker 2: is closed, and we're off to Wait a second, I'm
- 2:30:27Speaker 2: getting a warning light. The slide inside one of the
- 2:30:31Speaker 2: doors not like all of the doors. The slide inside
- 2:30:33Speaker 2: one of the doors is not working, is not inflating,
- 2:30:38Speaker 2: And we're just like sitting there and it ends up
- 2:30:41Speaker 2: being five or six hours, and I'm like, wait, could
- 2:30:45Speaker 2: we all just sign like a waiver that like, hey,
- 2:30:48Speaker 2: if the plane crashes, we don't really believe that the
- 2:30:52Speaker 2: emergency slide's actually gonna save us anyway, so like let's
- 2:30:56Speaker 2: just go.
- 2:30:58Speaker 1: But they have to do it. They have to check
- 2:31:00Speaker 1: every box on these planes.
- 2:31:01Speaker 11: Yeah, the monotony of hey, look, let's stay safe, right,
- 2:31:07Speaker 11: if the slide happens to save a life, let's get
- 2:31:09Speaker 11: the slide out.
- 2:31:11Speaker 1: But it's the same deal. So it was a two
- 2:31:13Speaker 1: lake flight.
- 2:31:13Speaker 11: We land in Denver and then we're flying from Denver
- 2:31:16Speaker 11: to Salt Lake, and it's the same deal where they
- 2:31:17Speaker 11: have to get up in like your inflatable vests or
- 2:31:20Speaker 11: I'm like, we're flying from Denver to Salt Lake.
- 2:31:23Speaker 1: We're not landing in water.
- 2:31:25Speaker 11: Let's let's know, let's skip over the vest thing when
- 2:31:28Speaker 11: we're flying over the rockies. Okay, it's not applicable. One
- 2:31:31Speaker 11: more question, Okay, as two fathers in here, Yeah, where
- 2:31:36Speaker 11: do you stand on disciplining other people's children, like strangers children,
- 2:31:44Speaker 11: let's say, loose acquaintances.
- 2:31:46Speaker 1: You do not you don't know the family that well.
- 2:31:51Speaker 2: If they are doing something that is going to damage
- 2:31:54Speaker 2: my property or is going to hurt my kid, uh huh,
- 2:31:57Speaker 2: I will discipline them, But beyond that it's for them
- 2:31:59Speaker 2: to hand.
- 2:32:00Speaker 11: Yeah, I'm very anti disciplining other people's children. I'm also
- 2:32:05Speaker 11: very anti allowing my child to be the one that's misbehaving.
- 2:32:09Speaker 1: Yeah, so did you have to make a decision.
- 2:32:12Speaker 11: Well, I look, I'm not going to say anything to
- 2:32:15Speaker 11: anyone else's children. Wife, I'm like the mafia. Okay, wife
- 2:32:20Speaker 11: and kids off limits. Not cann ever say anything bad
- 2:32:22Speaker 11: to your wife or your kids. I'm leaving them alone. Okay,
- 2:32:25Speaker 11: that's disrespectful to you.
- 2:32:27Speaker 1: So I will not do that.
- 2:32:28Speaker 11: But there was a group of children on this aircraft
- 2:32:35Speaker 11: that were left rather unattended.
- 2:32:37Speaker 1: So we had like six or seven right to do that.
- 2:32:43Speaker 11: Children badly misbehaving, making noise, jumping everywhere. But the other
- 2:32:50Speaker 11: thing was like they were having the time of their life.
- 2:32:52Speaker 11: They're having fun, and they're trapped in this tube for
- 2:32:55Speaker 11: six hours. I'm just trying to get some sleep. And
- 2:32:58Speaker 11: even if you throw the earbuds in and turn it
- 2:33:00Speaker 11: all the way up, you still hear these little is
- 2:33:04Speaker 11: it a what?
- 2:33:05Speaker 1: Nothing?
- 2:33:06Speaker 11: You still hear these little rugrats like making noise. I
- 2:33:10Speaker 11: swear one of them soil themselves. So the plane is
- 2:33:13Speaker 11: like suddenly it's reeking, and I look back and their
- 2:33:15Speaker 11: parents are like watching a movie on their iPad. So
- 2:33:19Speaker 11: I didn't say anything with the kids. What I wanted
- 2:33:20Speaker 11: to do is walk up to the parents and be like, look,
- 2:33:23Speaker 11: we're all in this together. Okay, yeah, but your kids
- 2:33:26Speaker 11: are really harsh in my mellow. So let's get up,
- 2:33:29Speaker 11: let's turn them, let's pause the movie.
- 2:33:30Speaker 1: We can watch the movie when we're in flight, and
- 2:33:33Speaker 1: let's just corral the group. Huh. Yeah, didn't do that.
- 2:33:38Speaker 1: Oh I wanted to.
- 2:33:39Speaker 3: I wanted these days, everybody searching for ways to say thank.
- 2:33:44Speaker 1: You, Dan.
- 2:33:45Speaker 11: I wanted to say something to the kids. But again,
- 2:33:48Speaker 11: I have a pretty hard and fast road.
- 2:33:49Speaker 4: You do not.
- 2:33:51Speaker 11: Scold other people's children unless they're putting other people in danger.
- 2:33:54Speaker 2: I had to scold a kid at a park like
- 2:33:57Speaker 2: a year ago because he was probably like ten or eleven,
- 2:34:03Speaker 2: and my four year old was on the slide and
- 2:34:07Speaker 2: he was trying to kick her off the slide, like
- 2:34:10Speaker 2: with the bottom of his foot, like yeah, like sparta
- 2:34:13Speaker 2: kicker off the slide. And so I had to scold
- 2:34:16Speaker 2: that child. But if it's like they're just being annoying,
- 2:34:19Speaker 2: I'm not gonna say anything.
- 2:34:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, that's dangerous behavior.
- 2:34:22Speaker 11: And when you see your kid, especially when they're four,
- 2:34:26Speaker 11: be like physically accosted, it doesn't matter if it's another
- 2:34:29Speaker 11: kid you see red. And so I mean, I mean,
- 2:34:34Speaker 11: I would encourage the community to not act on these emotions,
- 2:34:37Speaker 11: but it's hard to act rational when you see your
- 2:34:40Speaker 11: child in a perilous situation.
- 2:34:42Speaker 1: Yeah, we're glad to have you back. I'm glad you
- 2:34:44Speaker 1: made it back. Good to be back. And I guess
- 2:34:49Speaker 1: I'll ask you.
- 2:34:50Speaker 2: This is Utah football the ninth best team of the
- 2:34:55Speaker 2: last fifty years in college football that has not won
- 2:34:58Speaker 2: a national championship.
- 2:35:00Speaker 11: I heard you talking about this coming in, and I'll
- 2:35:02Speaker 11: have to look at the athletic list. It feels about right.
- 2:35:04Speaker 11: Without knowing exactly what the list looks like. Who's number one?
- 2:35:09Speaker 1: Oregon? Yeah? Do you have the list in front of you? Yes, Okay,
- 2:35:15Speaker 1: read me the eight teams out of Utah. Okay, so
- 2:35:17Speaker 1: it goes Oregon again, goes back fifty years.
- 2:35:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Oregon, Texas, A and M Virginia Tech, TCU, UCLA, Wisconsin, Iowa,
- 2:35:31Speaker 2: West Virginia, Utah.
- 2:35:34Speaker 1: So it's a really interesting exercise. Is this Vannini? Did
- 2:35:36Speaker 1: Vannini do this?
- 2:35:37Speaker 2: So this was.
- 2:35:40Speaker 1: Let me scroll back to Antonio Morales.
- 2:35:43Speaker 11: Okay, it's a really interesting exercise. And without having data
- 2:35:45Speaker 11: in front of me, I feel like I could probably
- 2:35:47Speaker 11: make a case that Utah should be ranked ahead of
- 2:35:49Speaker 11: a few of those teams.
- 2:35:52Speaker 1: TCU stands out really the West Virginia.
- 2:35:54Speaker 2: Certainly, the timeline is what skews it because UCLA hasn't
- 2:35:59Speaker 2: won anything since nineteen ninety eight. Yeah, but you go
- 2:36:03Speaker 2: back fifty years and like the late seventies, eighties, early
- 2:36:06Speaker 2: nineties were very good to UCLA. Yeah, Wisconsin kind of
- 2:36:10Speaker 2: reached their peak about two thousand and hasn't done a
- 2:36:13Speaker 2: whole ton since, so there's a pretty heavy recency bias.
- 2:36:18Speaker 2: Oregon has done a lot in those thirty years or so.
- 2:36:22Speaker 2: Before that, they were no good. Yeah, So the timeline
- 2:36:25Speaker 2: is what makes it pretty interesting.
- 2:36:26Speaker 11: Yeah, Like if this was the past twenty five years, right,
- 2:36:30Speaker 11: like since two thousand and one or whatever, maybe you'd
- 2:36:32Speaker 11: toss higher on that list. But yeah, to your point,
- 2:36:35Speaker 11: you go back, there were some lean years, man lean
- 2:36:39Speaker 11: years before coach Mack kind of started to get things
- 2:36:41Speaker 11: going in the right direction and even coach Max struggled
- 2:36:44Speaker 11: for a minute. So yeah, if you go back fifty
- 2:36:46Speaker 11: I think that makes it different.
- 2:36:47Speaker 2: I actually take umbridge with Iowa being where they are
- 2:36:50Speaker 2: because in fifty years they've won five conference championships, They've
- 2:36:55Speaker 2: made no national championship.
- 2:36:57Speaker 1: Game appearances, They've.
- 2:36:58Speaker 2: Never been in the top five, they've only won five
- 2:37:01Speaker 2: conference championships in fifty years, but they're always in the
- 2:37:05Speaker 2: top twenty five.
- 2:37:06Speaker 1: Yeah, so they got a grip of points in this
- 2:37:08Speaker 1: system for that. Yeah.
- 2:37:09Speaker 11: It seems like Iowa football every year is like the
- 2:37:12Speaker 11: same deal where they're not gonna be fun to watch.
- 2:37:15Speaker 11: It's gonna be like ten to seven weekend and week out,
- 2:37:17Speaker 11: thirteen to ten wins. But they're still gonna win eight
- 2:37:19Speaker 11: games and go to some like respectable bowl but never
- 2:37:22Speaker 11: anything beyond that. But more often than not, not much
- 2:37:26Speaker 11: beneath that. Right, it feels like you can kind of
- 2:37:28Speaker 11: count on them to beat that every single year.
- 2:37:31Speaker 2: Interestingly enough, Also, maybe you heard this, eight of the
- 2:37:34Speaker 2: eligible of the twelve eligible teams in the Big twelve
- 2:37:38Speaker 2: are on this list in the top twenty.
- 2:37:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:37:40Speaker 2: So it's like kind of what we already knew. It's
- 2:37:43Speaker 2: a bunch of like quality respectable. Hey, you're all seven
- 2:37:46Speaker 2: and a half for an eight.
- 2:37:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:37:48Speaker 11: Yeah, and that's kind of that kind of encapsulates what
- 2:37:50Speaker 11: the Big twelve is. So did you say Troy Smith
- 2:37:53Speaker 11: was the last Buckeye to win the Heisman?
- 2:37:55Speaker 1: Yeah? When did did Maurice Clarett win the Heisman? Was
- 2:37:58Speaker 1: he before Troy Smith. Maurice Clerett did not win the Heisman.
- 2:38:01Speaker 11: He did not win the heisman. For some reason that
- 2:38:03Speaker 11: that was the first name that popped in my head.
- 2:38:05Speaker 11: For some reason, I thought he won the Heisman.
- 2:38:06Speaker 1: I was wrong. He was really good.
- 2:38:08Speaker 2: He was really good fun to watch, sir, Stay tuned
- 2:38:12Speaker 2: for the drive. Thanks for listening to the Sean o'conlin Show.
- 2:38:14Speaker 2: Will do it again tomorrow on ESPN seven hundred and
- 2:38:16Speaker 2: ninety TWOEFM
