- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at FindingGodAtWork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is wholehearted, becoming healthier Christians
- 0:31at work.
- 0:33Back in the 1980s, Bob Pazanovich was an
- 0:36executive at a computer company called Zenith.
- 0:39He was a sales leader.
- 0:41Things were going well.
- 0:42He was in his early 30s, doing over
- 0:44a billion dollars in revenue company-wide.
- 0:46He lived in Chicago's Gold Coast, an upclass
- 0:49neighborhood.
- 0:50He felt like he was really winning at
- 0:52life.
- 0:54And then he went into a party in
- 0:56his Gold Coast neighborhood and was offered cocaine.
- 0:59And he thought he'd try it out, and
- 1:00he loved it at first.
- 1:02And then things started to unravel.
- 1:05Now let me read in Bob's own words.
- 1:08Work and my career were so important that
- 1:10I would have done anything to save them.
- 1:12But instead I thought that I had it
- 1:14under control, that I would be able to
- 1:16quit drugs on my own.
- 1:18I'll quit tomorrow, I would say to myself.
- 1:21But tomorrow never came.
- 1:24Fortunately, I was able to get treatment several
- 1:26years after I was fired.
- 1:28Unfortunately, I had to lose almost everything before
- 1:32I was willing to get help.
- 1:36I'll quit tomorrow.
- 1:38Bob does not have that unusual of a
- 1:41story as far as substance use in the
- 1:43workplace is concerned.
- 1:45There's a 2022 study published in the journal
- 1:48Occupational Health Science that shows that about 13
- 1:51.6 million American workers have a substance use
- 1:55disorder of some kind.
- 1:56So that's about 9% of the workforce,
- 1:58almost 1 in 10 workers.
- 2:01And substance use disorders are not the only
- 2:03kind of destructive habit or even formal addiction.
- 2:06So for example, this wouldn't cover pornography addiction
- 2:09or even more informal things like workaholism being
- 2:13addicted to work itself, which can function in
- 2:15a very similar way to a substance use
- 2:17addiction.
- 2:20Many people are caught in a cycle where
- 2:24their lives are dominated by something that's incredibly
- 2:26destructive.
- 2:28And this affects everything in their life.
- 2:30It affects their personal lives.
- 2:31It affects their work lives.
- 2:33And it's often invisible in the workplace.
- 2:35Sometimes you know somebody has a problem.
- 2:37Sometimes you don't.
- 2:39Sometimes people hide really, really well what they're
- 2:42suffering and what they're going through.
- 2:44So just like we talked about with depression
- 2:45and anxiety, even if this isn't something that
- 2:48you personally deal with, you almost certainly have
- 2:51someone you know in the workplace who is
- 2:53facing this kind of challenge.
- 2:55And so having an understanding of how addiction
- 2:58develops, how it works, and what the path
- 3:01toward recovery can look like is something that's
- 3:04really helpful for all of us to learn
- 3:05something about as disciples of Jesus.
- 3:08So in this episode and the next episode,
- 3:11we're going to talk about addiction and recovery.
- 3:13So this is kind of the bad news
- 3:14episode.
- 3:14Sorry to say we're talking about addiction and
- 3:17how it develops.
- 3:17And then we get the good news of
- 3:19recovery and how we can think about that
- 3:21in the light of the good news of
- 3:22Jesus in our next episode.
- 3:25But first just to kind of understand what
- 3:26addiction is in a Christian perspective.
- 3:30We've been building that theological anthropology right of
- 3:32how our thoughts and our feelings, our heart
- 3:35or will, our bodies, and our soul as
- 3:39integrator and receiver and relater, that God created
- 3:43us with all of those aspects and that
- 3:44they're meant to go together.
- 3:46That's that soul is integrator piece that we're
- 3:48meant to function as whole human beings.
- 3:50That Jesus has an implicit holism even in
- 3:53the way that he does his moral teaching.
- 3:55When he says love the Lord your God
- 3:57with all your heart and all your soul
- 3:59and all your mind and all your strength,
- 4:00he's implying that you can deploy all of
- 4:03those aspects of your person in unity towards
- 4:05this purpose of loving God.
- 4:07So there's an implicit holism.
- 4:10That is really, really important when we think
- 4:13about addiction.
- 4:14So rather than doing a definition of addiction
- 4:17like I did from the Mayo Clinic for
- 4:19depression and anxiety, I want to do more
- 4:22of a description of addiction as a life
- 4:25source disorder.
- 4:28Addiction is a life source disorder.
- 4:32Now what do I mean by that?
- 4:33Well why do people use a substance in
- 4:36the first place?
- 4:36And we'll just use substances because that's a
- 4:38more concrete easy one.
- 4:40Again it could be many different cases of
- 4:42what the actual object of addiction is.
- 4:45But why would somebody use a substance in
- 4:47the first place?
- 4:48Like why would you drink a beer?
- 4:50Even something that isn't necessarily immediately damaging?
- 4:53Well it's because you get something out of
- 4:56that experience.
- 4:57You get a little bit of pleasure or
- 5:00sometimes a little bit of distraction, a little
- 5:03bit of an altered state, right?
- 5:05You're looking for something and that substance gives
- 5:09you that thing.
- 5:11Okay now within the Bible, the fact that
- 5:15we are looking for something, that we have
- 5:17desires, that we have needs, is a good
- 5:20thing, right?
- 5:21This is part of the teaching of Scripture.
- 5:23The question is how do we go about
- 5:25getting those needs met in a healthy way?
- 5:29Okay so you could think about it this
- 5:31way.
- 5:31We as human beings have certain needs, like
- 5:34our need for water, and it is good
- 5:36for those needs to be met.
- 5:37So like drinking water is a good thing.
- 5:40But we're also like Goldilocks, right?
- 5:42Goldilocks and the three bears, right?
- 5:44This bed is too big, this bed is
- 5:45too small, this bed is just right, this
- 5:48porridge is too cold, this porridge is too
- 5:49hot, this porridge is just right.
- 5:51It is actually possible to drink too much
- 5:53water.
- 5:54Now most of us, that's not where we're
- 5:55at, but there is a condition called polydipsia
- 5:57where people just have this kind of insatiable
- 5:59need to drink water and that can cause
- 6:01problem.
- 6:02Most of us probably don't drink quite as
- 6:03much water as we need to.
- 6:05My wife, who's a nurse, is always like,
- 6:06Chris, it's bad that you're not hydrating more.
- 6:10So on the one extreme we know we
- 6:12can be dehydrated, on the other extreme we
- 6:14know we can have polydipsia, but that Goldilocks
- 6:17just right middle zone is the right amount
- 6:19of water for a human being.
- 6:21Again, this is because human bodies have a
- 6:24nature.
- 6:25They have a set of needs that can
- 6:27either be met, go unmet, or be met
- 6:31but in an unhealthy way.
- 6:33Okay so what is an unhealthy way to
- 6:36meet your need for hydration?
- 6:39Maybe drinking soda pop, right?
- 6:41Because you're getting the water that you need,
- 6:43but then you're also getting a bunch of
- 6:44sugar and other stuff that you don't need,
- 6:45right?
- 6:46So if you're drinking like, you know, 20
- 6:48cans of Mountain Dew a day, that's, you
- 6:50know, that's not healthy and that will affect
- 6:52your body in specific ways because you have
- 6:54a human nature.
- 6:55You have limits in terms of the amount
- 6:57of sugar and caffeine that your body can
- 6:59process in a good way.
- 7:01Okay so even before we rise to the
- 7:03level of what we would call an addiction,
- 7:05we all know that it's possible to try
- 7:08and meet bodily needs in an unhealthy way.
- 7:12Now that is true for bodily needs.
- 7:14It is also true for emotional needs.
- 7:17So all of us as human beings have
- 7:18deep emotional needs and if those needs go
- 7:22unmet, often we will seek something to meet
- 7:26that emotional need in an unhealthy way.
- 7:29So for example, one of our needs is
- 7:32for beauty.
- 7:33We need experiences of beauty in our life.
- 7:36We talked about this when we were looking
- 7:38at the book from Dr. Gregory Gansal, how
- 7:40in the Christian narrative beauty points the way
- 7:42home.
- 7:43We need beauty.
- 7:44If we don't feast on good forms of
- 7:47beauty, like in nature or art or literature
- 7:50or just observing the beauty of human beings
- 7:54and real embodied relationship with them, we will
- 7:56look for some replacement for that sense of
- 7:59This is one reason why pornography is so
- 8:03powerful, is people hypercharge their attachment to images
- 8:08that are meant to give sexual gratification, but
- 8:10that is not just about physical bodily pleasure.
- 8:13That is an attempt to meet an emotional
- 8:16need, often an emotional need about bonding with
- 8:19human beings, but also the need for beauty.
- 8:22Like the idea that you would reflect upon
- 8:24images in a way that feels transcendent.
- 8:28That's good.
- 8:28That's good.
- 8:29That's part of how you're designed to work
- 8:31as a human being, but then the images
- 8:33that you're choosing can be very unhealthy and
- 8:34very destructive in their effects.
- 8:37Okay, so why do I call it a
- 8:40life source disorder?
- 8:42Because behind all of these particular cases, like
- 8:45we need water, we need food, we need
- 8:48shelter, we need beauty, we need bonding with
- 8:51other human beings, we need friendship, whether it
- 8:55needs our biological or emotional or a mix
- 8:57of the two as is often the case,
- 8:59right?
- 9:00You give your friend a hug, that's a
- 9:01biological thing and that's a social thing and
- 9:03an emotional thing.
- 9:05Regardless of what it is, what we're ultimately
- 9:07looking for is life.
- 9:10We are looking for the things, the conditions,
- 9:14the substances, yes, the relationships that will give
- 9:18us life, that will give us what we
- 9:21need to really be alive and feel alive.
- 9:27And this is one of the bedrock teachings
- 9:28of Scripture that we need life and we
- 9:30will look for life in various places.
- 9:33And it's not a bad thing.
- 9:34This is a good thing.
- 9:35It is a good thing that you have
- 9:35a desire and that you have a need
- 9:38for life.
- 9:40The question again though is where is that
- 9:42need going to be satisfied?
- 9:44At its deepest level, philosophically we could call
- 9:46it an existential need.
- 9:48What will satisfy your need for life existentially
- 9:52at the deepest level of your being?
- 9:55So I'm gonna go to Psalm 16.
- 9:57Okay, so this is a Psalm that Jesus
- 9:59would have been familiar with and that gets
- 10:01cited in relation to Jesus's resurrection in the
- 10:04book of Acts.
- 10:05But I just want to look at a
- 10:06few verses towards the end here.
- 10:09Starting in verse seven.
- 10:12I bless the Lord who gives me counsel.
- 10:14In the night also my heart instructs me.
- 10:17I have set the Lord always before me.
- 10:20Because he is at my right hand, I
- 10:23shall not be shaken.
- 10:25Therefore my heart is glad and my whole
- 10:27being rejoices.
- 10:29My flesh also dwells secure.
- 10:32For you will not abandon my soul to
- 10:34Sheol or let your Holy One see corruption.
- 10:37You make known to me the path of
- 10:39life.
- 10:40In your presence there is fullness of joy.
- 10:43At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
- 10:48Okay, now this is a Psalm of David
- 10:50and what David is giving us is a
- 10:54statement about how human need can ultimately existentially
- 10:59be satisfied.
- 11:01And did you notice how David is also
- 11:02working with this implicit holism in the different
- 11:05ways he referred to himself, right?
- 11:07He mentioned his heart in the night.
- 11:09Also my heart instructs me.
- 11:11He mentioned his hand.
- 11:12Because he is at my right hand I
- 11:14will not be shaken.
- 11:16He mentions his heart again and then he
- 11:17uses this word translated as whole being.
- 11:21The footnote for my ESV translation says that
- 11:23could also be translated my glory.
- 11:25But again that idea of like there's something
- 11:27about me that's like all of who I
- 11:29am.
- 11:29My whole being rejoices.
- 11:31My flesh also dwells secure.
- 11:33So getting at that his body is also
- 11:35part of the picture here.
- 11:37For you will not abandon my soul to
- 11:39Sheol.
- 11:41Okay, so David's saying all the different aspects
- 11:44of who I am they have needs.
- 11:47My heart needs instruction.
- 11:49My right hand needs to not be shaken.
- 11:52My heart again needs gladness.
- 11:54Our heart needs positive affect.
- 11:56My heart is glad and my whole being
- 11:58rejoices.
- 11:59My flesh needs to dwell secure.
- 12:02My body needs to not see corruption.
- 12:04It needs to not rot in the So
- 12:08David has all these needs.
- 12:09But then what is the focal point of
- 12:11fulfillment for these needs?
- 12:14It's the presence of the Lord.
- 12:15That's how the Psalm ends.
- 12:17You make known to me the path of
- 12:18life.
- 12:19In your presence there is fullness of joy.
- 12:22At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
- 12:27The human person is designed to have needs.
- 12:31Those needs can go met.
- 12:32Those needs can be met.
- 12:33They can go unmet or they can be
- 12:36met in unhealthy ways.
- 12:38The fuller teaching of Scripture is that our
- 12:40ultimate need, our ultimate existential need, can only
- 12:45be met fully and in a healthy way
- 12:48by the presence of God.
- 12:52That is why addiction is a life source
- 12:55disorder.
- 12:56It's a way of looking for something that
- 12:57will give you life that you can only
- 13:00ultimately get from the Lord.
- 13:02You can only ultimately receive that goodness from
- 13:06the Lord.
- 13:08So that's why the word addiction, a modern
- 13:10psychological term, doesn't show up in the Bible.
- 13:14But a word that does show up in
- 13:16the Bible quite often is idolatry.
- 13:20Now this is a weird word in our
- 13:22social context.
- 13:22Like if I were to talk with a
- 13:23friend at the food bank who's not necessarily
- 13:25a follower of Jesus and say like, hey
- 13:27do you feel like you ever suffer from
- 13:28idolatry in your life?
- 13:30They'd be like what?
- 13:31You know like it's not a term that's
- 13:32used in our context.
- 13:34But what idolatry means in the context of
- 13:37Scripture is worshipping a God who cannot give
- 13:42life.
- 13:43Let me give another example from the Psalms.
- 13:45This is from Psalm 115 starting in verse
- 13:482.
- 13:49Why should the nation say, where is their
- 13:50God?
- 13:51Our God is in the heavens.
- 13:53He does all that he pleases.
- 13:55Their idols are silver and gold, the work
- 13:57of human hands.
- 13:59They have mouths but do not speak, eyes
- 14:01but do not see.
- 14:02They have ears but do not hear, noses
- 14:04but do not smell.
- 14:06They have hands but do not feel, feet
- 14:08but do not walk, and they do not
- 14:10make a sound in their throat.
- 14:12Those who make them become like them, so
- 14:15do all who trust in them.
- 14:18Those who make them become like them.
- 14:21The problem with idols is not just that
- 14:23they're different from the one true God, the
- 14:26God of Israel as presented in the Hebrew
- 14:28Scriptures.
- 14:29The problem is that they don't give life.
- 14:32They can't see, they can't hear, they can't
- 14:34talk, they can't interact with you in any
- 14:37real and genuine way.
- 14:39They can't give you what you're looking for
- 14:41and the effect of that on you is
- 14:44destructive.
- 14:45The effect of that on you is those
- 14:47who make them become like them.
- 14:49You no longer have life because you have
- 14:51dedicated your life.
- 14:52You have sought your life source from something
- 14:55that cannot give you life.
- 14:57That's what idolatry means.
- 14:59And so if you think about the rhythm
- 15:01of that passage as it relates to a
- 15:03substance use disorder or a pornography addiction or
- 15:05even workaholism, somebody who's built their life around
- 15:08something that they think is going to give
- 15:10them life.
- 15:11They have hands but do not feel, feet
- 15:13but do not walk, and they do not
- 15:16make a sound in their throat.
- 15:17Those who make them become like them, so
- 15:20do all who trust in them.
- 15:22The booze or the cocaine or the sex
- 15:25or the work will not give you the
- 15:27life you are looking for.
- 15:29Addiction is a life source disorder.
- 15:34Okay, now for friends who I have that
- 15:36are outside of a faith context, I've never
- 15:39met somebody who's like a champion for addiction
- 15:41who's just like, what we need is for
- 15:43more people to be addicted to more substances,
- 15:45right?
- 15:45Maybe there are people out there like who
- 15:47are making money off of addiction that that
- 15:48would want that.
- 15:49But almost everybody, regardless of their specific faith
- 15:51convictions, agrees that like addiction is bad, right?
- 15:54When somebody gets caught in that cycle, that's
- 15:56bad.
- 15:56Somebody might even recognize in their own life,
- 15:59well I know that I'm caught in something
- 16:01and that that is bad for me.
- 16:03The question is if you know that is
- 16:05bad for you, then what is good for
- 16:08you?
- 16:09And this is why a holistic conversation about
- 16:12addiction can't be separated from a conversation about
- 16:15faith.
- 16:15It's the claim of the Scriptures that God
- 16:19is good for you.
- 16:22And unless you find that life in Him,
- 16:26you'll always keep chasing for it somewhere else.
- 16:28Maybe not in terms of a formal addiction,
- 16:30but in different ways that don't meet that
- 16:32ultimate existential need.
- 16:36So all of us stand at the crossroads.
- 16:39All of us have an option to say,
- 16:41will I embrace this to give me life
- 16:43or will I embrace that to give me
- 16:45life?
- 16:46We have a choice, a decision to make.
- 16:48Here we are back at the will.
- 16:51And Dallas has a fantastic quote, Dallas Willard,
- 16:53about the will as it relates to addiction.
- 16:56So I just want to read that.
- 16:58This is from a lecture that he gave.
- 17:00The function of the will is to deliberate,
- 17:02to consider desires, but also to consider the
- 17:05wider picture, to be freed from obsession.
- 17:09Okay, I know about that, but is it
- 17:10good?
- 17:11Is it best to consider alternatives?
- 17:14If you allow your will to be dominated
- 17:16by desires, then you will no longer be
- 17:18able to deliberate.
- 17:20You'll say, I have to have this.
- 17:22That is almost never true.
- 17:24An addict is a person who has surrendered
- 17:26their will to desire.
- 17:32You So when we don't have our life
- 17:36source operating for us in the way that
- 17:39it's meant to, we end up imprisoned by
- 17:42desire.
- 17:43We end up losing the capacity to deliberate
- 17:45and choose what is best.
- 17:48We end up stuck doing things that we
- 17:49know we ultimately don't want to do.
- 17:52We are trapped.
- 17:53We are shackled.
- 17:54We are enslaved.
- 17:55We are imprisoned.
- 17:57We need freedom.
- 17:59And that's what we're gonna talk about starting
- 18:01in our next episode.
- 18:06Lord Jesus, thank you that you are so
- 18:07patient and gentle with us, that you know
- 18:10the real needs and real desires that can
- 18:12lead us into these destructive places.
- 18:15And you are not ashamed to meet us
- 18:17right where we're at.
- 18:19Give us all the courage to see how
- 18:22we have chosen, how we have developed the
- 18:25habits that we have to see clearly where
- 18:27we're looking for life.
- 18:30Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 18:32do our work with you.
- 18:38Thanks for listening.
