- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families podcast. It's the podcast for.
- 0:07Speaker 2: The time poor parent who just wants answers.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Now from a waitressing point of view, when you get
- 0:12Speaker 1: to the table and there's been kids there, you're going
- 0:14Speaker 1: to spend an extra six to ten minutes cleaning up
- 0:16Speaker 1: that table compared to the one where a couple of
- 0:18Speaker 1: bad odds of evening.
- 0:18Speaker 2: It's a spaghetti house, much less. And now here's the
- 0:23Speaker 2: scars of our show, My Mum and Dad, Kylie.
- 0:27Speaker 1: This is going to be a jam packed loads of
- 0:30Speaker 1: fun this week. Aga in parenting. You're so good at that,
- 0:38Speaker 1: we should make a promo out of that and just
- 0:41Speaker 1: get it out there that everyone knows. I love this
- 0:43Speaker 1: podcast episode. This is trash talk. This is looking at
- 0:46Speaker 1: what parenting's happening in the news, what people are talking
- 0:49Speaker 1: about when it comes to paring in the news. And
- 0:51Speaker 1: I've been collecting over the last couple of weeks a
- 0:52Speaker 1: whole lot of articles where parenting has gone absolutely crazy.
- 0:58Speaker 1: We've got way too many news articles about parenting to
- 1:00Speaker 1: talk about, but I think that we should just dive
- 1:03Speaker 1: into it and get cracking. For those of you who
- 1:05Speaker 1: needed the podcast once a month, we basically look at
- 1:07Speaker 1: what's happening in parenting in the news, and we laugh
- 1:10Speaker 1: about it, or we comment on it, or we just
- 1:12Speaker 1: keep you up to date. I what people are talking
- 1:13Speaker 1: about with stuff that relates to kids and parents.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Okay, well I want to talk about the no kids
- 1:18Speaker 2: allowed in the restaurant. Right a popular Italian restaurant New
- 1:22Speaker 2: Jersey will be turning away children under the age of.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Ten BBS to Hiss. Dave Cralin explains why Nettie's House
- 1:28Speaker 1: of Spaghetti is doing this. So this is an article
- 1:31Speaker 1: that was on kids Spot just recently. It's based on
- 1:33Speaker 1: something that was happening in the United States. I can
- 1:35Speaker 1: see it happening in Australia as well, though I don't
- 1:37Speaker 1: think this is a uniquely US kind of thing. Kidspot
- 1:40Speaker 1: dot com dot Au have got this article called we
- 1:44Speaker 1: Love kids, but It's time to take control. Restaurant bans
- 1:48Speaker 1: anyone under ten. A popular restaurant has sparked debate over
- 1:52Speaker 1: its decision to ban children under the age of ten
- 1:53Speaker 1: from dining there. Neddie's House of Spaghetti in New Joysey
- 1:57Speaker 1: made the announcement last week on their Facebook page, explaining
- 2:00Speaker 1: their reasoning, we love kids, We really truly do but
- 2:05Speaker 1: lately it's been extremely challenging to accommodate children at Nettie's.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Between noise levels, lack of space for high chairs, cleaning
- 2:11Speaker 1: up crazy messes, and the liability of kids running around
- 2:14Speaker 1: the restaurant, we have decided that it's time to take
- 2:16Speaker 1: control of the situation. This wasn't a decision that was
- 2:18Speaker 1: made lightly, but some recent events have pushed us to
- 2:20Speaker 1: implement this new policy. As of March eighth, the day
- 2:23Speaker 1: we return from our winter break, we will no longer
- 2:25Speaker 1: allow children under ten to dine in the restaurant. We
- 2:29Speaker 1: know that this is going to make some of you
- 2:30Speaker 1: very upset, especially those of you with very well behave kids,
- 2:32Speaker 1: but we believe this is the right decision for our
- 2:34Speaker 1: business moving forward. Thanks for understanding, Kylie. What do you
- 2:38Speaker 1: think is it okay for restaurants to ban kids? I
- 2:41Speaker 1: think that you love this. I can tell them from
- 2:44Speaker 1: your face. You're thinking, what's the problem here? Why is
- 2:46Speaker 1: this news? So for the.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Longest time, while ever we have had young children, we
- 2:52Speaker 2: have rung restaurants and said, what time do you open
- 2:54Speaker 2: your doors? We want to be in and out before
- 2:57Speaker 2: another person comes in, because it is hard.
- 3:01Speaker 1: We would make five pm bookings like four p thirty
- 3:04Speaker 1: if we could, let's just get in, get out, get
- 3:06Speaker 1: it done.
- 3:07Speaker 2: So we will choose takeaway over taking kids out. So
- 3:10Speaker 2: I don't have a problem with the restaurant saying that
- 3:13Speaker 2: it's an adult's only zone. Yeah, Like, if they've said
- 3:16Speaker 2: you can take your ten year olds, I'd be quite
- 3:19Speaker 2: happy if they said no kids. Not that I would
- 3:22Speaker 2: want every restaurant to do that, but I don't have
- 3:25Speaker 2: a problem with there being you know, a handful of
- 3:27Speaker 2: places where adults going to go. I mean, you've got
- 3:29Speaker 2: smoke free signs, smoking zone, Like, I don't have a
- 3:33Speaker 2: problem with that at all.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I think it's great because when you and I go
- 3:36Speaker 1: out for dinner, I really like to not have the
- 3:40Speaker 1: drama of kids. And you can get it from a
- 3:42Speaker 1: like from a watering point of view, waitressing point of view.
- 3:45Speaker 1: When you get to the table and there's been kids there,
- 3:47Speaker 1: you're going to spend an extra six to ten minutes
- 3:49Speaker 1: cleaning up that table compared to the one where a
- 3:51Speaker 1: couple of adults of even.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It's a spaghetti house, for goodness sake, can imagine mess.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I know what my two year olds would do with spaghetti.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I just yeah, I don't have a problem with it
- 4:00Speaker 2: at all.
- 4:01Speaker 1: And what I think as well is from a restaurant
- 4:04Speaker 1: point of view, there's gonna be a lot of restaurants
- 4:05Speaker 1: that are quite happy to have you and your kids.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But if a restaurant says, nah, we're just done with it,
- 4:10Speaker 1: I'm totally cool with that. But that was in the news,
- 4:13Speaker 1: kidspot dot com, dot you. I am curious, like when
- 4:17Speaker 1: it comes to ten being the cutoff. I can imagine
- 4:20Speaker 1: some families like, Oh, we really like Neddie's House of
- 4:22Speaker 1: Spaghetti though, and we've got a nine year old. We've
- 4:24Speaker 1: got an eight year old. What are they going to
- 4:26Speaker 1: do ask for the births. Let's just go and check it.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Let's just tell them that they're ten, and we'll get
- 4:30Speaker 1: them in there anyway. So I think this is just
- 4:32Speaker 1: kind of like the nightclub entry. I remember when you
- 4:36Speaker 1: were sixteen or seventeen, you want to sneak into the
- 4:38Speaker 1: night club. We're gonna have all these eight nine year
- 4:39Speaker 1: old sneaking into Netti's house to get So that's the
- 4:43Speaker 1: first story. I thought it was a fun one with
- 4:45Speaker 1: parenting being in the news, I mean, they're talking about
- 4:48Speaker 1: having kid free suburbs, and kid free communities, and it's
- 4:52Speaker 1: the same thing, right, if that's what you want, field
- 4:54Speaker 1: your boots. There's plenty of places that kids can go
- 4:56Speaker 1: and plenty of places that you can eat. Well.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I think we just we have to acknowledge it takes
- 5:00Speaker 2: types to make the world go round.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Yeah, right at the day, so really Rihanna performing with
- 5:08Speaker 3: authority right as a musical icon, but also with subtle
- 5:11Speaker 3: nods that yes, she is pregnant again. And it was
- 5:15Speaker 3: no mistake that the soon to be mother of two
- 5:17Speaker 3: started and ended her show alone on a floating stage
- 5:21Speaker 3: at what her producer said was the top of the world.
- 5:24Speaker 1: So number two Rihanna at the super Bowl, Rihanna made headlines,
- 5:29Speaker 1: credited motherhood for headlining the super Bowl and said you
- 5:32Speaker 1: can do anything. So she's literally one of the world's
- 5:35Speaker 1: biggest stars. She steps out onto the super Bowl stage
- 5:39Speaker 1: in front of like one hundred million people basically because
- 5:42Speaker 1: of the way it's televised and goes around the globe.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And she did it, perform for fifteen minutes or something
- 5:47Speaker 1: like that. All of her biggest hits while she was pregnant.
- 5:50Speaker 2: You make it sound like it's a massive feet.
- 5:52Speaker 1: It was all over the news. Everyone was making a
- 5:54Speaker 1: big deal of it.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I haven't seen Rihanna, So did she do like some
- 5:57Speaker 2: major dance moves or something.
- 5:59Speaker 1: She just up on stage and she performed and rocked
- 6:02Speaker 1: the place while she was pregnant, And people are saying,
- 6:05Speaker 1: this is a really, really, really big deal. I love
- 6:13Speaker 1: how you're like, why is this a big deal? I
- 6:16Speaker 1: love that because so what she was pregnant and she
- 6:20Speaker 1: performed at a concert Like that's okay, right, yeah, okay,
- 6:23Speaker 1: big news. Hey, this is that's this week in parenting.
- 6:27Speaker 1: The third story for this week in parenting.
- 6:33Speaker 2: This week in Parenting, Yes, is all about instant noodles.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Did you know instant noodles accounts for almost a third
- 6:39Speaker 1: of childhood burn injuries. A study published in the journal
- 6:43Speaker 1: Burns examine the data regarding all pediatric patients. Okay, this
- 6:47Speaker 1: was on nine honey, and I just can you trust
- 6:51Speaker 1: nine honey?
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:52Speaker 1: Yeah? Are you saying can you trust ninety? Calling me
- 6:55Speaker 1: honey is because that's what it sounded like. Can you
- 6:56Speaker 1: trust nine honey? Yes, you can absolutely. That's that's where
- 7:00Speaker 1: Chanel nine, That's where the upcoming season two of Parental
- 7:02Speaker 1: Guidance will be.
- 7:03Speaker 2: You can definitely totally trustweay.
- 7:05Speaker 1: The headline is instant noodles or a leading cause of
- 7:07Speaker 1: child burn injuries, says a new study. Now this almost
- 7:11Speaker 1: made it into the doctor's desk, but I decided that
- 7:13Speaker 1: it was probably a little bit more this week in
- 7:15Speaker 1: pairenting the doctor's desk. It didn't feel like it was
- 7:17Speaker 1: serious enough science for me. But let me share this
- 7:20Speaker 1: with you. A popular and convenient, low budget snack is
- 7:23Speaker 1: proving to be dangerous for young kids. According to a
- 7:26Speaker 1: new US study, instant noodles account for nearly a third
- 7:29Speaker 1: of childhood burn injuries. Now I remember when I was young,
- 7:33Speaker 1: I would I never actually spilt it on me, but
- 7:37Speaker 1: burn the inside of your mouth with that hot water
- 7:39Speaker 1: like that, there's pain going on there. The study, carried
- 7:43Speaker 1: out by Research as the University of Chicago and published
- 7:45Speaker 1: in the journal Burns, analyzed data of children who were
- 7:49Speaker 1: admitted to the hospital with school injuries between twenty ten
- 7:52Speaker 1: and twenty twenty. Of the seven hundred and ninety cases,
- 7:55Speaker 1: thirty one percent were caused by instant noodles. That's a percentage.
- 8:00Speaker 2: That's a huge percentage.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I can feel a class action coming on against the
- 8:04Speaker 1: noodle manufacturers. Furthermore, unsupervised children also faced higher risk, with
- 8:10Speaker 1: forty percent of instant Nordle burns occurring when children were
- 8:14Speaker 1: reported to be alone during the time of injury. Now,
- 8:17Speaker 1: I can't believe that they're collecting this much data, but
- 8:19Speaker 1: they've got the data and that's what they're showing.
- 8:21Speaker 2: You think about the level of burn that scolding water.
- 8:25Speaker 2: A child gets from scolding water, Yeah, this is intense
- 8:29Speaker 2: and depending on how much water we're talking about, that's
- 8:32Speaker 2: the difference between you know, a finger, a hand, an
- 8:35Speaker 2: arm halfway down your body. It's noteworthy.
- 8:39Speaker 1: The researcher in charge of the study, doctor Sebastian v Rell, said, anecdotally,
- 8:44Speaker 1: it felt like every other child we were consulted on
- 8:46Speaker 1: for a burn was injured by instant nordles. It was
- 8:49Speaker 1: a great headline, the instant noodles injured me. So we
- 8:53Speaker 1: wanted to dive into the data to see what the
- 8:54Speaker 1: trend really was and obviously it's a bit of an issue.
- 8:57Speaker 1: So we're raising that if you can, I say this,
- 9:00Speaker 1: if you're one of those parents that lets your kids
- 9:02Speaker 1: eat instant noodles, like we actually have instant noodles in
- 9:05Speaker 1: our house, don't we.
- 9:06Speaker 2: No, we don't. And you know what. This week in
- 9:09Speaker 2: parenting in the Coolson household, our twenty year old who
- 9:12Speaker 2: has had her own stash of instant noodles because I
- 9:14Speaker 2: will not buy them any more. Yes, she has them there.
- 9:18Speaker 2: If we have a yo yo night.
- 9:19Speaker 1: A yoo night for those of you who are unfamiliar
- 9:21Speaker 1: with the term, is that you're on your own night
- 9:23Speaker 1: where Kylie and I just say we're not cooking for you.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Figure it out for yourself.
- 9:27Speaker 2: And so she's too lazy to do anything else. She'll
- 9:29Speaker 2: pull out one of her cups. And she pulled one
- 9:31Speaker 2: out the other night and she said, you know what,
- 9:33Speaker 2: I'm so over these noodles. I didn't think I would
- 9:36Speaker 2: ever hear that.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Disgusting.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I was so excited.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I haven't had instant noodles far. It's got to be
- 9:42Speaker 1: twenty years, maybe more.
- 9:43Speaker 2: It's not really food, is it.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Be careful people listening to the podcast to eat instan noodles.
- 9:48Speaker 1: But if you do, if you do, just make sure
- 9:50Speaker 1: they're cool. Don't burn the kids with them. They're deadly, apparently,
- 9:53Speaker 1: according to the Science.
- 9:54Speaker 2: So story number four kids breaking into phones at school.
- 9:58Speaker 2: The education Minister's being forced defend Essay's controversial school mobile
- 10:03Speaker 2: phone ban only days after it was introduced.
- 10:06Speaker 1: It comes after a series of videos emerged showing students
- 10:09Speaker 1: vandalizing the taxpayer funded pouches used to keep the phones locked.
- 10:14Speaker 1: So Kylie, This story was on news dot com dot
- 10:16Speaker 1: Au The wild Way Australian kids are out smarting the
- 10:20Speaker 1: new school rule. So basically this year in South Australian
- 10:25Speaker 1: high schools, mobile telephones have been banned and the school
- 10:28Speaker 1: bought these pouches that are called yonder pouches. The idea
- 10:32Speaker 1: is that you stick the phone in there and then
- 10:34Speaker 1: it kind of it's locked. There's a special magnetic system
- 10:38Speaker 1: to unlock the phone. It just keeps phones out of kids'
- 10:41Speaker 1: hands while they're in the school yard. But according to
- 10:44Speaker 1: news dot com tell You, Australian students have found sneaky
- 10:46Speaker 1: ways to skirt around new mobile phone bands that schools
- 10:48Speaker 1: have spent thousands of dollars implementing. Basically, what the kids
- 10:53Speaker 1: are doing is the yonder pouches. They've found ways to
- 10:57Speaker 1: break them open and you don't need magnets. You have
- 11:00Speaker 1: to do According to the TikTok videos, where there are
- 11:03Speaker 1: dozens of videos of OSSI students teaching others how to
- 11:06Speaker 1: open the pouches. Is you get the Yonder bag and
- 11:10Speaker 1: you whack it really hard on this part just here,
- 11:12Speaker 1: That's what it says. And the TikTok just whack it
- 11:14Speaker 1: right here on this part. Hit it hard a couple
- 11:16Speaker 1: of times, and what do you know, Abrica dabruh, you
- 11:19Speaker 1: can get access to your phone. I mean it probably
- 11:21Speaker 1: breaks the Yonder pouch, which is worth about fifteen dollars
- 11:24Speaker 1: or thereabouts. It just says, you just want to bang
- 11:26Speaker 1: it a couple of times, really hard. This only works
- 11:29Speaker 1: with the new one, the one with the button. I
- 11:30Speaker 1: guess what this really shows is as parents, we can
- 11:33Speaker 1: come up with every possible solution to keep the kids safe,
- 11:39Speaker 1: to keep the kids offline, to keep the kids away
- 11:41Speaker 1: from their screens. And you know what they're going to do.
- 11:43Speaker 2: They're going to find a way.
- 11:44Speaker 1: They're going to say, don't care, don't care, you can't
- 11:47Speaker 1: make me. I can do what I want, and they do,
- 11:51Speaker 1: and sometimes the things that they do end up being
- 11:54Speaker 1: quite costly because they actually don't care.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Well. Story number five is the mullet.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Story number five. Do we have more stories? How many
- 12:02Speaker 1: more have we got that's it. This is the last
- 12:04Speaker 1: one okay this week compairing. This one caught my attention
- 12:07Speaker 1: because I'm just not quite sure how i'd respond. I
- 12:11Speaker 1: think I do know, but I'd love to get your
- 12:14Speaker 1: response here. Okay, so this was once again on nine Honey.
- 12:17Speaker 1: We will link to the story in the show notes.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Aunt sparks outrage aren't after taking toddler for a mullet
- 12:25Speaker 1: haircut without permission? Do you love it? Stay tuned to
- 12:31Speaker 1: see her reaction. Yes, I was expecting a bigger response
- 12:37Speaker 1: than that. You're just looking at me, So basically, what's
- 12:40Speaker 1: happened happened. So a woman has sparked fury online after
- 12:43Speaker 1: she took her nephew for a bold new haircut without
- 12:46Speaker 1: telling his mum. The aunt, who shared a video of
- 12:49Speaker 1: the process on her TikTok account, described it as a
- 12:52Speaker 1: little prank, but it seems that most people fail to
- 12:54Speaker 1: see the humor. My sister left me in charge of
- 12:56Speaker 1: her child, so I thought it would be funny to
- 12:58Speaker 1: take him to the hairdresser and paul a little prank,
- 13:01Speaker 1: she says in the clip captioned baby Mullet. Now, I've
- 13:04Speaker 1: got to tell you, this kid has got a thick
- 13:07Speaker 1: mop of hair. Little guy hair, lots and lots of hair.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I mean, he's actually a really spunky looking kid. And
- 13:15Speaker 1: she says, I'm not going to tell you guys what
- 13:17Speaker 1: it's going to be, but it's going to be so funny.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Then she holds him up so that you can see
- 13:21Speaker 1: this great head of hair. He sits down and next
- 13:24Speaker 1: thing you know, the hairdresser pulls out the clippers and
- 13:28Speaker 1: the mullet. The mullet is delivered, the sides are shaved off,
- 13:32Speaker 1: there's the ugly stuff at the back. It's really really well,
- 13:37Speaker 1: it's really bad, full stop and a story. Kylie, you've
- 13:41Speaker 1: got a kid. Your sister takes him. And this is
- 13:45Speaker 1: hard for us to imagine because we have six daughters,
- 13:48Speaker 1: but your sister takes our son to the hairdresser at
- 13:52Speaker 1: the age of what two or three?
- 13:53Speaker 2: So the problem is, I am not emotionally attached. And
- 13:55Speaker 2: that little baby is so adorable that regardless what haircut.
- 13:59Speaker 1: You're saying you're seeing, the mullet will still work. You
- 14:01Speaker 1: don't care. He's super super cute.
- 14:04Speaker 2: But if that was my child, yeah, I would lose it.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Yeah, So I mean, you could do it with a
- 14:10Speaker 1: girl as well, though, Like, let's say your sister, one
- 14:13Speaker 1: of your sisters takes one of our kids to the
- 14:14Speaker 1: hairdresser for just a surprise, is for a haircut. She
- 14:17Speaker 1: doesn't give her a mullet, but she gives her a fringe.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Or you've been working on getting some length and she
- 14:22Speaker 1: gives her It.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Wasn't even my sister. I took the kids to the hairdresser.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I had twelve year old and the fifteen year old
- 14:27Speaker 2: in the seat, and I said to them, I will
- 14:30Speaker 2: just go and meet dad because he's got Emily. She's
- 14:32Speaker 2: going to have her haircut after you. By the time
- 14:34Speaker 2: I came back, the twelve year old had made a
- 14:37Speaker 2: decision that we hadn't talked about, and I took one
- 14:40Speaker 2: look at her and I went, what have you done?
- 14:43Speaker 1: You do take haircuts? Seriously? Do you remember the time
- 14:45Speaker 1: when I took the kids for a haircut and you
- 14:47Speaker 1: said they're only allowed to have I don't know what
- 14:49Speaker 1: was it, five centimeters taken off. We just need to
- 14:51Speaker 1: get the ends growing nicely. And I decided to get
- 14:54Speaker 1: the kids to have cut it all off. I said,
- 14:56Speaker 1: let's give them a bob instead. Let's just give them
- 14:58Speaker 1: a nice Bob, they looked gorgeous. You didn't talk to
- 15:00Speaker 1: me for a month, Oh don't. You didn't see me,
- 15:03Speaker 1: made me sleep with the dog.
- 15:07Speaker 2: You make me sound terrible.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I'm just saying, you take your haircuts pretty seriously.
- 15:12Speaker 3: It's a big deal.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. You know what my hairdressers said to me
- 15:15Speaker 1: once when I went in for a haircut and I
- 15:17Speaker 1: was a bit unsure about it.
- 15:18Speaker 2: It'll grow on you.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Don't worry, It'll grow on you.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Yeah. We hope you've enjoyed this episode of This Week
