- Lucas: Luna, welcome back. Ready for another tiny taste of Malay? Luna: Always! What are we learning today? Lucas: Well, last time we did big and small — besar and kecil. Today, let's learn two more useful adjectives: panjang and pendek. Luna: Panjang and pendek. I'm guessing those mean something like long and short? Lucas: Exactly right. Panjang means 'long', and pendek means 'short'. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, these little building blocks add up quickly. The way we keep this ad-free is through listener support — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, and every bit helps us keep making these episodes. Okay, panjang and pendek. Let's hear them. Lucas: Panjang. Say it with me: panjang. Luna: Panjang. That's fun to say. Lucas: And pendek. Pendek. Luna: Pendek. Got it. So how do we use them in a sentence? Lucas: Great question. Let's start with 'The snake is long.' In Malay: Ular itu panjang. Luna: Ular itu panjang. Ular is snake, right? Lucas: Yes! So 'Ular itu panjang' — the snake is long. Can you say that? Luna: Ular itu panjang. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's try 'My hair is short.' Rambut saya pendek. Luna: Rambut saya pendek. Rambut is hair, so my hair is short. Lucas: Exactly. And one more: 'This pencil is long.' Pensel ini panjang. Luna: Pensel ini panjang. So 'ini' means 'this', right? Lucas: That's right. So we have 'Ular itu panjang', 'Rambut saya pendek', 'Pensel ini panjang'. Let's practice them together. Repeat after me: Ular itu panjang. Luna: Ular itu panjang. Lucas: Rambut saya pendek. Luna: Rambut saya pendek. Lucas: Pensel ini panjang. Luna: Pensel ini panjang. Lucas: Now let's reverse it. I'll say the English, you say the Malay. The snake is long. Luna: Ular itu panjang. Lucas: My hair is short. Luna: Rambut saya pendek. Lucas: This pencil is long. Luna: Pensel ini panjang. Lucas: You're doing great, Luna. Now I have a little challenge for you. Imagine you're at a market and you see a long snake and a short pencil. Tell me about them using panjang and pendek. Luna: Okay, uhh... Ular itu panjang, dan pensel itu pendek. Lucas: Yes! You used 'itu' for 'that' and said 'pensel itu pendek' — that pencil is short. Wonderful. Luna: Oh, so 'itu' is 'that'? I remember 'ini' is 'this'. So I can say 'buku ini panjang' or 'buku itu pendek'? Lucas: Absolutely. You're putting it together. Let's do a quick review of all the adjectives we know. We have besar, kecil, panjang, pendek. Can you give me a sentence with besar? Luna: Rumah itu besar. Lucas: And with kecil? Luna: Kucing itu kecil. Lucas: And panjang? Luna: Ular itu panjang. Lucas: And pendek? Luna: Rambut saya pendek. Lucas: You've got it. Now I want you to listen to a short story and see if you can understand. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Saya ada seekor ular. Ular itu panjang. Saya juga ada seekor kucing. Kucing itu kecil. Rambut saya pendek. Pensel saya panjang. Itu sahaja. Luna: Okay, I understood some. You have a snake. The snake is long. You also have a cat. The cat is small. Your hair is short. Your pencil is long. That's it. Did I get it? Lucas: Perfect! You understood almost everything. 'Saya ada' means 'I have'. 'Seekor' is a classifier for animals. But the key point — you understood the adjectives in context. Luna: This is so cool. I can actually describe things now. Lucas: And soon you'll be able to describe anything. Keep practicing panjang and pendek. Say them to yourself when you see something long or short. Luna: I will. Thanks, Lucas. This was another great episode. Lucas: You're welcome, Luna. And to our listeners, keep up the practice. We'll see you next time for another bite of Malay.
