Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Reaching The Summit With SCOTT KENNEDY From BLEED FROM WITHIN
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Scott Kennedy. I'm the singer of Bleed from Within. We're
- 0:03Speaker 1: just about to release a brand new album, Zenith, comes
- 0:06Speaker 1: out on the fourth of April.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Fantastic. Thanks for joining us today's cart.
- 0:11Speaker 1: No problem, Thanks for having me.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Well, this is, as you mentioned, Bla from Within releasia
- 0:15Speaker 3: seventh studio album, Zennith, this Friday, April before.
- 0:18Speaker 2: So how you feel about it?
- 0:21Speaker 1: I'm excited, man, it's been it appears that we've been
- 0:24Speaker 1: waiting so long to drop this album, so I'm buzzing
- 0:28Speaker 1: for it to finally get out. I think it's the
- 0:30Speaker 1: best collection of songs we've ever done, so I'm desperate
- 0:33Speaker 1: for people to hear it.
- 0:35Speaker 3: It actually started the rotting process in spring of twenty
- 0:37Speaker 3: twenty two. By how much did the song's change from
- 0:40Speaker 3: when you started three years ago to the finished result.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I mean they obviously changed, but I wouldn't say like
- 0:50Speaker 1: anything drastic happened. It's just basically get the sort of standard,
- 0:56Speaker 1: the sort of standard way where a song comes together.
- 0:58Speaker 1: You know, it started off from like Gouinsey or Stephen
- 1:02Speaker 1: on guitar would send some riffs and then it would
- 1:04Speaker 1: just sort of build from there, and then Ali would
- 1:07Speaker 1: sort of go and put his own drums to it.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I would put the vocals to it, and then I
- 1:10Speaker 1: guess we would spend maybe like six months to a
- 1:12Speaker 1: year just refining and tweaking all the little parts before
- 1:15Speaker 1: we go into the studio and track the album. So yeah,
- 1:18Speaker 1: they've obviously changed a lot, but it was just sort
- 1:22Speaker 1: of the natural progression of us, like writing a song.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Really yeah, could you get to the album? Be taper?
- 1:28Speaker 3: Basically for us branch Alos thought you were going for
- 1:30Speaker 3: this one. See.
- 1:34Speaker 1: To be honest, we bleed to my thing. There's never
- 1:36Speaker 1: really any there's never really like any like concepts or
- 1:42Speaker 1: anything like that. It's more just about but for me personally,
- 1:46Speaker 1: the songs that are always about sort of what I'm
- 1:48Speaker 1: going through at that point in my life. So it's
- 1:50Speaker 1: always like sort of I always tried to write from
- 1:55Speaker 1: the heart and write songs that are really meaningful and like,
- 1:58Speaker 1: because I don't want to go on age and sing
- 2:00Speaker 1: a song that doesn't really mean anything to me, or no,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I don't just want to go on and sing any
- 2:04Speaker 1: old ship to the crowd, you know. I want I want,
- 2:06Speaker 1: I want everything to come from the heart. And for
- 2:09Speaker 1: me personally, the songs are always just about what I'm
- 2:11Speaker 1: going through at that point in time. But I think
- 2:14Speaker 1: with Bleed with Within, it's just always about writing the
- 2:17Speaker 1: best collection of metal songs that we possibly can, and
- 2:21Speaker 1: I truthfully believe that this is the best collection of
- 2:23Speaker 1: metal songs we've ever written.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Now, the picture Rely says it contains the Bend's heaviest
- 2:29Speaker 3: and catchiest music to die.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Would you agree with this statement one hundred percent? The
- 2:34Speaker 1: first track on the album is that with It I
- 2:36Speaker 1: doubt the heaviest fastest song Bleach with thin I've ever written.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, actually, that's got a question about that.
- 2:43Speaker 3: A lot of the album happens with Violent Niu, which
- 2:45Speaker 3: is a crashing, brutal song mate, but it's like it
- 2:50Speaker 3: does exactly what the Knights suggested Ballad and Nier, Like,
- 2:53Speaker 3: what was the thought process behind that being the album?
- 2:55Speaker 2: With that?
- 2:56Speaker 1: I just wanted to you know, I think so many
- 3:01Speaker 1: times and so many bands have always started the record
- 3:04Speaker 1: with this big epic intro that just takes so long
- 3:07Speaker 1: to get in. You know, sometimes when you when you
- 3:09Speaker 1: want to listen to metal, you just want to get
- 3:11Speaker 1: straight to it, you know, Like, and there's been so
- 3:13Speaker 1: many times that I've put on some of my favorite
- 3:15Speaker 1: metal records and I've always skipped to track two because
- 3:18Speaker 1: I can't be arfwaying on like some big intro it
- 3:21Speaker 1: and for us, we'll let's just get to the point
- 3:24Speaker 1: straight off the bat. And that was that was That
- 3:26Speaker 1: was the basically the agenda behind.
- 3:28Speaker 3: That did that is all effect? Might I throw furnature
- 3:32Speaker 3: around the room and shape when I was listening to that?
- 3:37Speaker 1: That's what it was written for. That's exactly what it
- 3:39Speaker 1: was written.
- 3:41Speaker 3: And the modernize of streaming and songs that are played
- 3:44Speaker 3: out of order, how much emphasis and how much thought
- 3:46Speaker 3: actually goes into the track listing in the album's first song.
- 3:53Speaker 1: See. To be honest, I don't really I don't really
- 3:54Speaker 1: take a lot to do with that. It's more like
- 3:56Speaker 1: the boys in the band that play the instruments, you know,
- 3:58Speaker 1: like the songwriters and the band there the ones that
- 4:00Speaker 1: mostly take to do with that stuff. So I don't
- 4:02Speaker 1: feel like I could really forge a good enough opinion
- 4:06Speaker 1: on that subject, to be honest with you.
- 4:10Speaker 2: You can.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Also, there's also the presence of strings throughout the album,
- 4:13Speaker 3: and you've got the creasy guitar on edge of infeedity,
- 4:16Speaker 3: but minds your experiment with that sort of stuff this time.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I don't know. I think we always just want to
- 4:21Speaker 1: try and experiment with new things. Like our last record, Shrine,
- 4:24Speaker 1: had so much strings on it, so we didn't want
- 4:26Speaker 1: to do that too much on this record. So that's
- 4:28Speaker 1: why we started to, you know, play about with different
- 4:31Speaker 1: stuff like there's and bagpipes on there, you know, like
- 4:35Speaker 1: we just we're always wanting to explore new ideas like that.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And I think that the bagpipes in a Place your
- 4:42Speaker 1: hair was the best one I've ever done yet, So
- 4:44Speaker 1: I'm pretty stoked on that.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Hell hard is it? Just sort of like they say,
- 4:47Speaker 2: you are experimenting with them decide.
- 4:48Speaker 3: I don't know how they'll all sell together, I guess,
- 4:51Speaker 3: So how hard is the process of making them fit together?
- 4:55Speaker 1: I guess it's actually fun. It's more fun than anything,
- 4:58Speaker 1: you know, when you have the time. As you said,
- 5:00Speaker 1: we started writing this in twenty twenty two and it's
- 5:03Speaker 1: now twenty twenty five, so there's so much time there
- 5:06Speaker 1: to play with and experiment with that stuff, and it's
- 5:08Speaker 1: it's really fun hearing it all come together.
- 5:11Speaker 2: It's bigging of experimenting.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Bro like Ali speak quite at the side that there's
- 5:15Speaker 3: been so much growth, but we still have so much.
- 5:17Speaker 2: To experiment with as a band.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Like when do you say experiment, Like is that something
- 5:23Speaker 3: you might hear on another album.
- 5:24Speaker 2: And you say it woe wind trying it?
- 5:25Speaker 3: Or is it got completely outside of the box and
- 5:27Speaker 3: doing something out of your comfort signe?
- 5:29Speaker 2: Like how do you get skates experiment?
- 5:31Speaker 1: Action think it's completely going to Yeah, I think it's
- 5:35Speaker 1: more just going out of the box and trying new
- 5:37Speaker 1: things that are out your comfort zone. I mean, like
- 5:38Speaker 1: the song edge of Infinny, We've never done anything that's
- 5:41Speaker 1: soft before, Like you know, the songs get more clean
- 5:43Speaker 1: vocals in it than it does screaming. That's that's completely
- 5:47Speaker 1: new for us. We don't really do stuff like that
- 5:48Speaker 1: a lot. And as we spoke about before, violent Nature
- 5:52Speaker 1: being the fastest song I've ever written, Like it's just
- 5:55Speaker 1: all about trying new things and experimenting and doing stuff
- 5:58Speaker 1: stem at yourself outside of comfort zone, you know. And then,
- 6:01Speaker 1: as I said before, you have the time to try,
- 6:03Speaker 1: so yeah, and you've.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Got two awesome guest vitalists on day Josh Middleton from
- 6:08Speaker 3: Sarsis on the remixed single heads of saying then you've
- 6:11Speaker 3: got Bretton Dalla Promsted on on a motor design, Like,
- 6:14Speaker 3: what was it like first you working with them? And
- 6:16Speaker 3: why did you choose eyes to your particular without songs?
- 6:20Speaker 1: They were just big fans of their voice, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 1: like Josh Josh has been sorry, I'm just grabbing my
- 6:25Speaker 1: coffee And Josh has been a good friend of the
- 6:27Speaker 1: band for a long long time. And I think like
- 6:33Speaker 1: Josh is mostly known even though he's Josh is the
- 6:36Speaker 1: vocalist in Cylosis as well as a guitar player. I
- 6:38Speaker 1: feel like Josh is more known for being a guitar player,
- 6:41Speaker 1: you know, He's like that. I feel like that's what
- 6:45Speaker 1: he's sort of quote unquote famous for. But I love
- 6:47Speaker 1: his vocals and I really wanted to get him on
- 6:52Speaker 1: this record as as a guest vocalist and not a
- 6:54Speaker 1: guest guitar player, and brand Davers genuinely just one of
- 6:59Speaker 1: my favorite of singers. Like we're all we're all massive,
- 7:02Speaker 1: massive fans of Masterdon and we've all like we had
- 7:04Speaker 1: so many nights on our bus, you know, having a
- 7:07Speaker 1: few beers got mastered on on him. All we ever
- 7:09Speaker 1: talk about is how incredible his voice is. So I
- 7:12Speaker 1: feel like it was just like sort of and we
- 7:15Speaker 1: just had to do it, you know, we just had
- 7:17Speaker 1: to have him on a record singing. So yeah, thanks.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Thankfully we reached out to him and he was he
- 7:23Speaker 1: was up for it. So nice, Yeah, nice, nice.
- 7:26Speaker 3: And what's the album comes here? Bro, You've gotta got
- 7:28Speaker 3: a bit of chor to mine. You've got some big
- 7:30Speaker 3: festivals coming up.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Yeah, so we're we're leaving three weeks to go to
- 7:34Speaker 1: America for a month with Bullet from a Valentine and
- 7:37Speaker 1: Trivium and the Yeah, we have loads of festivals and
- 7:41Speaker 1: the summer and we're working on getting down your way soon,
- 7:46Speaker 1: which there should be more information about sound soon.
- 7:50Speaker 2: So right, nice.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Before I got bro, I've got any segment on started
- 7:54Speaker 3: called fire out bombs, So basically before we talked, I've
- 7:56Speaker 3: got three social media and ours and fire outs and
- 7:59Speaker 3: all be more of it out. I felt this one
- 8:02Speaker 3: like what if it did you guys get kicked off
- 8:04Speaker 3: the tour bush?
- 8:08Speaker 1: No, that was actually a festival we played somewhere in Europe.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It was a football field too. It would just let
- 8:13Speaker 1: the dugout in a football field more. We're just I
- 8:16Speaker 1: don't know why. We just felt like sitting there looking
- 8:19Speaker 1: like idiots taking a phoe. So yeah, it wasn't. It
- 8:22Speaker 1: wasn't at the side of the road. It was it
- 8:23Speaker 1: was a side of a football pitch.
- 8:25Speaker 2: It looks like in the middle of that way.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I know it really does. I think that's why, as
- 8:30Speaker 1: a photographer just said, just sit down there and let's
- 8:33Speaker 1: take a phoo.
- 8:34Speaker 2: And I've got this one.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Bran Like, there's quite a lot of fire eyes in
- 8:37Speaker 3: there view doing this, but yeah, sort of right, might
- 8:42Speaker 3: like what running through how you're feeling and like the
- 8:45Speaker 3: invition you're going through the mind on this when you're
- 8:47Speaker 3: in the crowd, they're holding you up and you're fucking
- 8:49Speaker 3: feeling at all.
- 8:52Speaker 1: See, if I'm honest, I just don't think about it.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Like see when I'm in the moment on on on stage,
- 8:57Speaker 1: the last thing I'm doing is thinking like it's the
- 8:59Speaker 1: only time my life where I can just you know,
- 9:01Speaker 1: escape any sort of like.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Thoughts.
- 9:06Speaker 1: You know, I'm just like, I just do it. And
- 9:08Speaker 1: I've done that on the last song for every I've
- 9:10Speaker 1: done that every show on the last song for god
- 9:14Speaker 1: knows how many years, probably like ten years. So I
- 9:16Speaker 1: just do it, like even if there's only ten people
- 9:18Speaker 1: in the crowd. I will still be standing on top.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Of them if I ever like decided I wanted to
- 9:23Speaker 3: KP you and just switched you away from the front.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Yeah they have done before. Yeah I've actually I felt
- 9:29Speaker 1: as well and smashed my head on the floor and stuff.
- 9:32Speaker 1: It's just good fun of it.
