- 0:00Our number 2, Mallory Condon, welcome back and glad you're
- 0:02with us. We'll talk sports with you for
- 0:04another hour. Tune things over at the top of
- 0:06the hour. Off the bench come Sean Roberts
- 0:09and Lucas train. They will take you until 5.
- 0:11Bottom of the hour, John Bowen, camp, Associated Press, Iowa
- 0:14college hoops.com. We'll recap with John.
- 0:17Couple of things. Obviously the Iowa, Robert
- 0:19Moore's game last night, a little World Series
- 0:21conversation. Let him gloat a little bit about
- 0:23his Dodgers. It's time for the cap man,
- 0:25though. Off to Chicago we go.
- 0:27ESPN 1000 and Caps YouTube channel Hello Cap, how are you?
- 0:32I'm doing awesome. I'm doing great.
- 0:34The weather's nice, a little chilly for my taste, but the sun
- 0:38is shining and the bulls are 6 and one and the bears are five
- 0:43and three. Trying to get the six to three.
- 0:45All's good. Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:47Yeah, The Bulls are a surprise so far, but I don't go back to
- 0:50the biggest surprise, at least late in the early window on
- 0:53Sunday afternoon. That was the comeback.
- 0:55I mean, what a final couple of minutes of that football game.
- 0:58So you're watching the game, Cap.
- 0:59Obviously, you had to believe, like most of the country did,
- 1:02that. Oh, my God, the Bears are going
- 1:04to let this one get away. Cincinnati.
- 1:06Flacco is going to do it to them.
- 1:07What's going through your mind in the final couple of minutes,
- 1:10Cap? I'm guessing in a roller coaster
- 1:12of emotions. So I'm watching the game with my
- 1:15son and, you know, so many friends of mine go and I get
- 1:19invites, all if you want to go to the game.
- 1:21Absolutely not. The last time I saw the Chicago
- 1:24Bears play at Soldier Field 2001, and people are just blown
- 1:31away by that. They're like, what?
- 1:34Well, I was always in the studio doing TV and once I gave that
- 1:37up, I got a great set up in my basement.
- 1:41It's my job, so it's business. I got A5 TV set up with the
- 1:45games all go. It's like my own sports book.
- 1:47Like why would I want to go make that trek down the Soldier
- 1:51Field? No shot.
- 1:52I am going to see them at Lambeau in a few weeks, December
- 1:557th. I've seen them there before.
- 1:58I've been to see them in Jacksonville and in Kansas City,
- 2:01I think. But my point of the whole thing
- 2:04is like I'm locked in on every game, every second, I'm taking
- 2:08notes, I'm doing the whole deal and now they're going to try A2
- 2:13point conversion. And I said to myself, why would
- 2:16you go for two here? Why wouldn't you make it a 7
- 2:18point game? Of course they make the two.
- 2:22Now I'm terrified. If they get the onside kick now
- 2:25they can beat us. This is horrible.
- 2:28And they get the onside kick. And I saw it clear as day.
- 2:32I'm watching the ball and I see it hit Daniel Hardy's foot and
- 2:36I'm like, Daniel, I understand your job is to be engaged with a
- 2:40blocker. That's how you're taught.
- 2:43You're taught. You just engage that guy right
- 2:45there. But you got to have some
- 2:46self-awareness, man. You got to look down and go, oh,
- 2:49oh, balls coming my way. Boom, right off his leg.
- 2:53They recover. And as soon as they recovered, I
- 2:56knew Flacco was going to score. Absolutely, 1000% was convinced
- 3:02they're going to score. They do.
- 3:05They kick the extra point, we're down.
- 3:08I was not devastated. I was kind of stunned that we
- 3:12put ourselves in that position, but I knew Caleb Williams was
- 3:16taking us down to get a field goal, but I didn't know if we'd
- 3:19make it because our special teams were horrible.
- 3:22And so that's not a shot at Cairo as much as bad snap or
- 3:28this or that. Something's going to go wrong
- 3:31here because special teams had a horrible day.
- 3:34And then Caleb drops a dime in between four guys and Colston
- 3:38Love into the house. Holy cow was that cool.
- 3:42There was a lot of yelling. I used a word that my 10 year
- 3:46old asked and I said I I fish was what I said.
- 3:49I didn't actually say fish when I was hollering at the TV after
- 3:52they touched down. They did it.
- 3:54Special teams. It started at the beginning of
- 3:56the game. Charlie Jones runs by and back
- 3:58almost ended with an on side Richard Hightower.
- 4:01He was the only coordinator that was retained by Ben Johnson.
- 4:06Got to got to feel like he's maybe got a pretty short leash
- 4:08after that performance out of the special teams and kind of
- 4:11what we've seen in many parts of the season.
- 4:14You know, ironically, I am driving right now, this second,
- 4:19I'm passing Charlie Jones High School.
- 4:23He went to Deerfield High School where my kids went, and that kid
- 4:29brings it back first thing. It pops in my mind.
- 4:31Remember the movie Any Given Sunday?
- 4:34Remember in the first playoff game they won, then they got
- 4:37knocked out, and then he left to go run that new team in
- 4:41Albuquerque, NM and that first one, the opening kickoff, they
- 4:47took back. And immediately in my mind, I'm
- 4:50thinking of Al Pacino when he goes.
- 4:53Nobody said we're going to win by shutout.
- 4:54We're good. It's only 7, nothing.
- 4:56So that's how I rationalized it in my mind.
- 5:01We end up offensively having a great day.
- 5:04Caleb plays really, really well. But the defense not good.
- 5:09The special teams worst. Somehow, someway, you had to
- 5:13find a way to win a football game and they did, absolutely.
- 5:16Did five and three right now. Here come the Giants on Sunday.
- 5:20You'll watch it at home. We know that already.
- 5:23So this is a winnable football game cap and six and three looks
- 5:26like a pretty good spot as far as yeah, they've still got a lot
- 5:29of work to do, obviously. And the schedule does get
- 5:32significantly tougher, I think looking at it.
- 5:35But six and three, if they can find, do they need to find four
- 5:40more? Just do you need to win 10?
- 5:44I think you do. I think, well, did you finish
- 5:46nine and eight and you've cleaned up the culture to the
- 5:50degree that looks like they have?
- 5:52And I was talking to Kevin Byard last night.
- 5:54We did a show together. He said, he said you can't
- 5:57imagine how different the culture is around here.
- 6:00He said this, this man is like an assassin, Ben Johnson, like
- 6:04he is all in 24/7. And he said he was sitting at
- 6:10their team meeting on what's today, Wednesday.
- 6:13On Monday, they had a team meeting.
- 6:15CJ Gardner Johnson's been there with them one game.
- 6:18He's been there like 4 or five days.
- 6:20And he said, Ben Johnson said, OK, let's next guy, next team
- 6:24up, force him to quit. Let's dominate him.
- 6:28That's how I want to take the field.
- 6:29And he said CJ Gardner Johnson, who's like Dennis Rodman, like a
- 6:33maniac, He's been on a handful of teams because he's a little
- 6:36crazy. He said, oh wow, this is the
- 6:40best guy I've ever played for. I love this guy.
- 6:43He's an absolute animal. That's what Ben Johnson is.
- 6:47He is an animal about how they prepare, how they play.
- 6:52There's no let downs with this team.
- 6:54That doesn't mean they can't have a bad game.
- 6:56They did Detroit, they rallied. But yeah, I'm really excited
- 7:01about this opportunity. You've got to run the football
- 7:04more than you did last week although.
- 7:06Menon Guy was terrific. He was great, but I'm not saying
- 7:09you're going to get 280 yards rushing.
- 7:11That's rare. But you have to run it in terms
- 7:14of number of carries because they've got Brian Burns, Abdul
- 7:19Carter, Kaylin Thibodeau can all rush the passer at an elite
- 7:23level. I think Burns has 11 sacks
- 7:27really tough. That means you got to run right
- 7:29at him. You can't let him pin his ears
- 7:31back and try and sack the quarterback.
- 7:33So if you use the run a lot, you can then use Caleb and his
- 7:38ability to get plays in the passing game down the field.
- 7:42So my prediction is that the Bears are going to run the ball
- 7:45a ton at the Giants got a block, Dexter Lawrence, That's not an
- 7:49easy task, the nose guard, but that's going to allow Caleb to
- 7:54have deep shots. I'm talking deep shots that they
- 7:58may be able to score on. To that culture point, I saw
- 8:01interview with Zacchaeus who's also played for a lot of
- 8:04organizations during his career, I think 4 different ones over
- 8:07the last six years. So he's been around the league
- 8:10and talks about setting the standard.
- 8:12We hear so much about this culture, how different it is.
- 8:15You see the the post game locker room speech by Ben Johnson and
- 8:18everybody fired up and everybody engaged with it.
- 8:20Yet it's still an undisciplined team.
- 8:22When you look at the penalties, you look at just some of the the
- 8:25boneheaded mistakes that they make.
- 8:27How do you marry those two? Because like you said, it does
- 8:29feel different. Yet there's still some of the
- 8:32mistakes that, well, plenty of the dumb Bears teams of the past
- 8:34have made. Yeah, that's a very good
- 8:37question. I think that they are getting
- 8:40better in terms of the penalties are one thing, but understanding
- 8:45your assignments, playing with your hair on fire, those things
- 8:50have become, there's only one way that's how we're going to
- 8:54play or you're not going to play here.
- 8:57Some of the pre snap penalties, look, you've got a offensive
- 9:01line unit. Theo Benedict, he wasn't even on
- 9:04the team last year. He was on injured reserve.
- 9:06You didn't have Joe Tooney, you didn't have Drew Dahlman, you
- 9:09didn't have Jonah Jackson, you did have Darnell, right?
- 9:12They're trying to come together as a unit.
- 9:15Caleb's trying to learn this really complex offense, his
- 9:19cadence, those new guys, it's all different.
- 9:23You got a rookie running back this week or this past week.
- 9:26I don't know if he'll start again.
- 9:28We'll hear on DeAndre Swift probably today, so some of that
- 9:32can be understood, but no excuses, man.
- 9:36You've got to clean the penalties up.
- 9:38They were a little bit better this week.
- 9:40They've got to be even better on Sunday.
- 9:43They have to be. That's a game you've got to
- 9:45have. I'm sorry, they're two and seven
- 9:48in your building. They don't have neighbors.
- 9:51They don't have Scatabo. That's a game you cannot lose.
- 9:54You have to have it. The Bears were one of the teams
- 9:57that went out and did something at the trade deadline.
- 9:59What can you tell us about Joe Tryon Shokinku?
- 10:04So he was the 32nd pick in the first round, I believe, out of
- 10:07Washington. He's OK.
- 10:10He's a depth piece. You know, I was asking a
- 10:13baseball GM about the trade deadline and I said, do you have
- 10:17guys that you could pick up the phone?
- 10:20They go, hey, man, I need a fifth starter.
- 10:22Hey, man, I need a bullpen arm and what do you need?
- 10:27And you give him a prospect and it looks on the service like,
- 10:30wow, they helped you out big time, he said.
- 10:33Because if I'm up the track, if I have a good relationship with
- 10:36that GM, I'm going to do the same thing for him.
- 10:39Oh, you need a fifth outfielder? Just throw me a Class A guy.
- 10:42Here you go. And don't forget me three years
- 10:44from now, if I'm in the race and you're not, I want the same type
- 10:47of treatment back. He said people don't understand
- 10:51that because they want to kill you in every deal.
- 10:54They want to win every deal. He said if you kill people in
- 10:57every trade, you're going to find out they're going to stop
- 11:00A, trading with you and B, you're never going to get
- 11:03anybody to help you when you really need it.
- 11:06Hey, man, can you help me with a pass rusher?
- 11:09I can't give you a high pick. Just give me somebody.
- 11:12I got a little cap room, I'll take the money and they help
- 11:15you. And I wouldn't be shocked if two
- 11:18years from now, Ryan Polls said, hey, I'm making a trade with the
- 11:22Cleveland Browns and I'm sending this guy because we were
- 11:26probably going to end up having to release him.
- 11:27So I'm helping the Browns out. That wouldn't shock me.
- 11:30That's how business gets done. We were just having a
- 11:34conversation on the Chiefs with our guy Nick App, and he was
- 11:36saying that Brett Veach, he's running into that right now
- 11:39because he's won every trade and there were only two teams that
- 11:42would engage with him at trade talks.
- 11:43And I think that goes hand in hand with what you're saying.
- 11:46Point. That's an excellent point.
- 11:47Yeah, well, they wanted Breece Hall and they were seriously
- 11:53involved on Breece Hall because the Bears made some calls on it
- 11:57and they offered a fourth round pick for Breece Hall and The
- 12:00Jets said Nope, it's a third round pick if you want them.
- 12:05In the end, Brett Beach waited right up to the deadline
- 12:08thinking they were going to give us the 4th.
- 12:10He's a friend. They said sorry, good luck to
- 12:13you, hope you win in the playoffs and they wouldn't trade
- 12:16him. They set a price.
- 12:17Good for them and by your by your what you said I.
- 12:20Think that's a misstep on their part.
- 12:22That's too bad. Anyways, By who?
- 12:24By by who? By the Chiefs not not giving up
- 12:27a four. I mean, you've given up a three.
- 12:28I think Bruce Hall is a difference maker.
- 12:30That's the missing part for for the Chiefs.
- 12:33They get a running back of his ilk that makes them and it just
- 12:36takes them up. Makes them even better in my
- 12:38opinion. Yeah, The thing is, if you're
- 12:41the GM of The Jets and you give in, why the next time they just
- 12:47not think you're going to give in again.
- 12:48You'll blink. Yup.
- 12:49You'll blink. You'll blink, you'll blink.
- 12:51Cap 3 weeks ago whatever was when the when the Cubs season
- 12:55and we started, you know, discussing what they may look
- 12:58like next year. You thought, you know what, I'm
- 13:01not sure sure that the Cubs are going to that Imanaga will be a
- 13:05Cub in 2026. You were spot on.
- 13:09He's not going to be a Cub in 2026, is he?
- 13:13No, I mean they could offer him a qualifying offer, but the
- 13:16qualifying offer will be more than what he would have gotten
- 13:21had they picked up his option now.
- 13:22The option guaranteed him three years, not just one.
- 13:26So there is a little difference, but the average annual value of
- 13:29the contract will be more if you give him a qualifying offer and
- 13:34he accepts it. But what I'm being told if they
- 13:37give him the qualifying offer, he's going to reject it and try
- 13:41and get more guaranteed money over more years.
- 13:45So I'm pretty confident when he's thrown his last pitch.
- 13:48Here's the deal on this. If, if they take the money that
- 13:53they save the 15,000,000 that his option would have paid him
- 13:57this coming year and they traded away the 9 million of Andrew
- 14:01Kittredge, it was a $1 million buyout.
- 14:04So let's call it A1 billion dollar saving and now you add
- 14:08that together and you have a few other veterans, 6,000,000 off
- 14:12Justin Turner being one of them. All of a sudden you should if
- 14:18you're not signing Kyle Tucker and I don't think they're going
- 14:21to. I want to hear you playing in
- 14:23the deep end of the pool for pitching, whether that is Framer
- 14:28Valdez, Dylan Cease, there's a bunch of guys out there that you
- 14:33can go get. I want 2 starting pitchers.
- 14:36Like I listed all their starters yesterday.
- 14:38They've got eight guys that I'm not saying that would be in
- 14:41their rotation. They have 8 guys that could make
- 14:45a start for you. Obviously Jameson Dione,
- 14:48obviously Cade Horton, Matthew Boyd, Colin Ray.
- 14:54Jordan Wicks is on their roster. Javier Assad is 6.
- 14:58They're going to bring up Jackson Wiggins eventually.
- 15:01It's seven. I think he pitches here this
- 15:04coming season. Justin Steele is going to be
- 15:07back maybe June 1 thereabouts. So all of a sudden you got a
- 15:12plethora of quality arms. I got to go get at least one if
- 15:16not 2, probably 1 high end starter and then one Matthew
- 15:22Boyd type guy where I'm like OK now I have no need to rush
- 15:27Justin Steele back, no need to rush Wiggins up.
- 15:32That's where I'm at. After that, you still have the
- 15:35bullpen to figure out and Kittridge gets traded to
- 15:38Baltimore. Keller, Pomerantz, Steel Bar.
- 15:40All those guys are impending free agents.
- 15:43Really the only high leverage guy from the playoff run is what
- 15:46we saw from Palenci on the back end.
- 15:48We'll see what part of Hodge develops into Ben Brown is a
- 15:50bullpen or starter for for him. What do you anticipate here?
- 15:53There are some big names in the bullpen that are going to be a
- 15:57free agents that they could sign.
- 15:59Are they going to go big fish hunting here or is it going to
- 16:02be more old veteran? Give it a shot, take a group of
- 16:05guys and and see what you get build.
- 16:07How does this bullpen come together?
- 16:09I don't think they're a big game hunting bullpen crew.
- 16:13I just don't think Jed, Theo, you know, all the guys in that
- 16:16tree, I don't think they believe in that.
- 16:18They'll acquire 1 during the season and then cut ties quick.
- 16:23Or all this Chapman, Wade Davis they acquired for one year.
- 16:28Who's the kid that we had that was always hurt?
- 16:31Brandon Morrow, types of guys. Craig Kimbrel who they brought
- 16:36in mid season. That's more their MO, not hey,
- 16:40Josh Hader for five and 100. No, we're not doing it.
- 16:42Or Edwin Diaz or any. I don't see the Cubs doing that
- 16:46because philosophically, I don't think they believe in it.
- 16:49And now they'll say to you, why should we give Brad Keller?
- 16:52Let's call it, I'm hearing 3 for 30 is the projection.
- 16:57Why should we give Brad Keller 3 for 30?
- 16:59Let's go find the next Brad Keller that we signed on a minor
- 17:02league deal, get him in our pitch lab, and all of a sudden
- 17:05he becomes Brad Keller, who was really, really good for us.
- 17:08So that's where I think they're going to go.
- 17:12Could I see a veteran signing? Could I see Field Bar back here
- 17:15as a lefty specialist? Maybe.
- 17:18I'll be surprised if they sign Keller and I like him, but I'll
- 17:21be surprised if they give him 30 or 40 million guaranteed
- 17:25dollars. That will surprise me.
- 17:27Good stuff, Cap Appreciate it. As always.

- 20:03Congratulations. Yeah, as I told Trent off off
- 20:08air, it was not a championship. This was a coronation.
- 20:12That was you should have a great time.
- 20:14Not only did they have all the money in the world, but then

- 20:27Have you were you impressed at all by the team that they
- 20:30dispatched in extra innings in Game 7?
- 20:34Oh, yeah. You know, I, I, because the
- 20:36funniest thing is I watch the game, but I also have the game
- 20:39cast that, that MLB does on MLB.com.
- 20:42And just to see where pitches are and all that.
- 20:45And it shows the box score and it shows the, the, the, you
- 20:49know, the batting averages for those guys in the post season.
- 20:52And there was not a bad guy in that line, you know, And I mean,
- 20:57I think back to the NLCS when, when the Brewers were there, I
- 21:00was looking at lineup and like, well, when they get past this
- 21:02guy, there's four or five guys that aren't a problem.
- 21:04Right. You know, I mean, that was the
- 21:06difference. And you know, and the other
- 21:08thing is too about these playoffs is with the Phillies,
- 21:12Brewers and Blue Jays, they were all likeable teams.
- 21:14There was nothing I didn't like about them.
- 21:16I like their managers. I like the way those guys
- 21:19played. It was, you know, you with the
- 21:22Padres you hate. I mean, that's, that's just, you
- 21:25know, that's just that just the territory.
- 21:27But but you know, with these teams, I was like, I didn't hate
- 21:30him. It was like it was fun baseball.
- 21:33In my mind, it really was. It was great for baseball, I
- 21:35think. I think baseball had a great
- 21:37month of October, personally. We should have ended
- 21:39differently. But to the winner go the spoils.
- 21:42Congratulations, John. We are America's We are
- 21:45America's team now. Kirk Behrens even referenced
- 21:47them yesterday. So anyway, anyway.
- 21:51Well, there's one guy to certainly celebrate.
- 21:53Jack Dreyer, the Johnston Kid, the Iowa Hawk guy and another
- 21:58world championship. And I saw they had a graphic
- 22:01from Big 10 Network and it was Dave Roberts.
- 22:06What, UCLA? There was another.
- 22:10Oh, Mark Pryor. Mark Pryor, USC.
- 22:12Yeah. And then a real Big 10 guy and
- 22:14Jack Dreyer. Those are the only three with
- 22:15Big 10 affiliations. So they claimed the other two.
- 22:17Yes, they didn't. They absolutely put them in
- 22:19there. Put them in there.
- 22:20All right, let's get into basketball.
- 22:22Last night, we opened the show with this John and this Iowa
- 22:26basketball team. We watched a lot of Drake last
- 22:28year. We knew.
- 22:29And yet it felt like maybe Ken and I were a little bit tepid,
- 22:33skeptical. Yeah, got to see it.
- 22:35A portion of the fan base, probably that way.
- 22:38It's one game against Robert Morris.
- 22:40However, boy, that was different.
- 22:43Yeah, it was fun, you know, and I mean, I, you know, he went
- 22:47with a line up last night. That starting line up was that
- 22:50was familiarity to him. You know, I mean, four of those
- 22:53guys were former Drake players and and then you had Cooper Koch
- 22:56in there and they started so well.
- 22:59I mean, it was a 17 two run to open the game and that place
- 23:03got, you know, the I mean, there was there was that was a decent
- 23:06crowd for I mean, it was 99000, you know, and I mean it was kind
- 23:10of a late arriving crowd. I was a little worried, but it
- 23:14was a lot. It got loud and it was kind of
- 23:16fun and it was fun to watch him play.
- 23:18It was fun to watch him play defense.
- 23:20I mean, there was a lot of time. They got a couple shot clock
- 23:22violations. They forced some bad shots late
- 23:26in the shot clock. It was just really fun
- 23:29atmosphere. Now second-half, you know, it
- 23:31kind of got a little stagnant there a little bit, but but but
- 23:35for a 40 minute game and that was as good of opening night
- 23:39performance as you would want for this program now in this new
- 23:43era. The defensive intensity, just
- 23:45something we haven't experienced watching Hawkeye basketball for,
- 23:49you know, the last decade. It was great to see John.
- 23:51That was my biggest take away with this, Trent said.
- 23:54We saw a lot of Drake last year. Sure you did as well.
- 23:57You, you, you knew what to expect in a way when you're, you
- 24:00know, playing teams that in the Missouri Valley Conference,
- 24:02admittedly, but we we saw that with our own two eyes at Carver
- 24:07Hawkeye Arena. And I expect we'll see that a
- 24:09whole lot more coming up in the winter months.
- 24:11And it was great to see. Yeah.
- 24:13I mean, these are all, I mean, the guys that came with him,
- 24:16we're all really solid basketball players
- 24:19fundamentally. They hustle.
- 24:21They did you again play defense, which you know you really want
- 24:24to see. And so like I said, you saw a
- 24:27lot of good things out of them. I say again, there's some things
- 24:30they're going to have to work on.
- 24:31But I think what you saw last night was this was a good team
- 24:34that if you fix, need to clean some things up, could be a very
- 24:37good team once you get into Big 10 play.
- 24:40So I think it was a surprise. We didn't see fool Garris in the
- 24:43starting line up. We also didn't see Hassan out
- 24:46there who I think we're, I don't know.
- 24:49I think I had both those guys in pen that were going to be
- 24:51starters, not first. Off the bench, Hassan, I'm not.
- 24:53Sure. No, he was, I think late.
- 24:56Yeah, he was way down there. He was like the 9th or 10th guy
- 24:59off the bench. I.
- 25:00Thought he was. You look at this now, found out,
- 25:04Bennett, Sturt says. They don't know until they're
- 25:06getting ready to go on the floor who's going to start.
- 25:08It's something that Mccullum's always done, wants to have
- 25:10everybody on their toes, everybody ready, engaged and
- 25:12ready to go. But is it something to be said
- 25:15about both of those guys, anticipated starters?
- 25:17Is it just the understanding of what he wants in the Drake guys?
- 25:20What do you kind of go into that starting lineup?
- 25:21I know it's about who finishes who, not who starts.
- 25:24But it's fun hearing your name called on these starting
- 25:26lineups. Yeah, and he did say last night
- 25:29he did say that that this was the starting lineup for that
- 25:32game. It could be different Friday
- 25:34night. It could be different next week
- 25:36against Xavier. You know, with with Fulgaris,
- 25:39you know, he's made some kind of references to him that he's real
- 25:42good that there's sometimes where he maybe kind of takes
- 25:44some things off. And you know, and then with
- 25:47Austin, he kind of handed the other day, he said some of our
- 25:51really good shooters aren't there are best defenders.
- 25:54So, you know, again, there's there's probably some things
- 25:56there. And so he's trying to figure out
- 25:58a way where to where to work them in.
- 26:00And I think and so again, the way they were used last night, I
- 26:04thought worked very well. You know, eventually full
- 26:07Garrison gets into the starting line up.
- 26:09I really think that at the same time it all goes back there.
- 26:12Well, how many minutes are they going to log during a game?
- 26:15And, and I, and I think you know both of them, both of them will
- 26:19see their time as the season goes on.
- 26:22Any more on basketball? Trent football press conferences
- 26:26yesterday. Back to the gridiron this week,
- 26:28Here comes Oregon. John, this the build up for this
- 26:31game. It's been a while at least I
- 26:34kind of get that feeling since, yeah, the the Penn State game,
- 26:37etcetera. But there's so much to play for
- 26:39now that we're into the month of November for this Hawkeye team.
- 26:43It just feels like we're on the cusp of a pretty big spot. 2:30
- 26:47afternoon, Kinnock Stadium. Well, now you're in position,
- 26:51you know, you're 20th in the CFP rankings.
- 26:53You're you know, if you win on Saturday, you're going to get
- 26:56into the national polls, both of them.
- 26:59I mean, you're in the coaches one now.
- 27:01This is a big moment for them because it again, you've built
- 27:05to this point now can you take it to that next step?
- 27:08And so, and again, this is a really good Oregon team coming
- 27:12in. There's a lot of excitement
- 27:14about this game. And I, and I think if you would
- 27:16have told me 4 weeks ago, 5 weeks ago that there would be, I
- 27:19would have been really skeptical.
- 27:21But they put themselves, they have put themselves into the
- 27:24spot They've had that they've had the off week to prepare.
- 27:28I will, I think they will come out and play a very good
- 27:32football game. And I don't see any reason why
- 27:34they couldn't win the game. This Oregon team is talented,
- 27:39they are young in some spots including quarterback or Dante
- 27:41Moore and and he looked through Kurt talked about a couple of
- 27:44their freshman defensive lineman who look impressive.
- 27:47These numbers though, just absolutely left off the page to
- 27:50me with Oregon. All right, 4 running backs, all
- 27:53four guys 250 or more yards this year.
- 27:55He'll take a look. 7.4 per carry.
- 27:58Let me finish 3.9 for Davison. Whittington 3.8, Lamar 3.8.
- 28:04That is yards after contact, not yards per carry, yards after
- 28:08contact. These guys run hard.
- 28:10They run in space and Iowa, they played much better defensively.
- 28:14But they have to tackle, They have to wrap up and not let that
- 28:17play. That's going to go for six, go
- 28:19for 10. And they're also going to have
- 28:21to be really good up front because I think this is a really
- 28:23good Oregon offensive line. And it's like if you get these
- 28:26running backs ahead of Steam, then they are pretty hard to
- 28:29bring down. So again, it's going to have to
- 28:31take a total defensive front and back.
- 28:34And so that is going to be to me to me, the key on Saturday is
- 28:39how can they control the line on both sides of the ball.
- 28:41And if they can do that, they have a really good chance of
- 28:44winning this game. But you can't let them get a
- 28:46newer rhythm, especially in the running game.
- 28:48You know you can't let them dominate the line because at
- 28:51that point you're, you're chasing them the rest of the
- 28:53day. Back-to-back former PAC 12 teams
- 28:56lie ahead with the trip out to USC next week is of the two
- 29:01John, I mean it's it's Oregon. Where were they ranked 7th
- 29:04yesterday and whatever they were in in the in the playoff
- 29:08rankings, they're top ten team and then USC they're in the top
- 29:1125. Is next week more difficult just
- 29:14because of the trip out West? I mean, it's been such a bugaboo
- 29:18for ferrets. Yeah, they never, they for
- 29:21whatever reason, they've never solved that problem.
- 29:23And so that's why I think this week is so important because if
- 29:28you drop this one, that puts a lot more pressure on next week.
- 29:32And you know, if you get this one, then you want to go get
- 29:35next week. It's going to be a tough place
- 29:37to play. It's a tough trip.
- 29:38It always is. You are playing in the City of
- 29:41Champions, so you can take something off that.
- 29:44But but no, I seriously, I mean, I do think this is, this really
- 29:48is the next two weeks really set up for what the post season
- 29:52looks like for them. And that's what you want.
- 29:55That's what you you built yourself to this point.
- 29:57Now how can they finish? They're in place to.
- 29:59They're in position to do so. Yep.
- 30:01John to Saturday again with Oregon.
- 30:05We talked, they're good. I mean, that's a really talented
- 30:07team. There's at times you get those
- 30:10feelings, John, I, I've I've heard you plenty of times when
- 30:12you just you have that feeling that starts to seep in.
- 30:16Are you getting it this week? Are you getting that feeling
- 30:18going back to 2016 against Michigan where just there a fair
- 30:23and special is up this? Do you see that happening?
- 30:25This week. It it almost feels like
- 30:27everybody's trying to will it into existence this week.
- 30:30How do you see it? Yeah, I, I, you do kind of get
- 30:34that feeling and oh, by the way, look at the weather forecast
- 30:36this. Saturday.
- 30:38You know, and it, it that could, that could make that game even
- 30:42more interesting. So I, I just, there's just so
- 30:47much of a feeling around this. And I've covered enough games
- 30:50there to know when you have that feeling.
- 30:52I think back to the Penn State game a couple years ago when
- 30:54they were both top five and you just had that feeling.
- 30:57This game has that feeling. And you know, so I do think
- 31:02Saturday is going to be, I think Saturday is going to be a really
- 31:05good day. So it should be a lot of fun.
- 31:08Bring your poncho with that walk into that climate controlled
- 31:11press box where you'll sit and watch.
- 31:13I'll. Just be out tailgating, I'll be
- 31:15soaked by the time I get to the stadium.
- 31:17You won't be alone. And then the food.
- 31:18You know the carving table. I have hot dogs and burgers.
- 31:23Good stuff. associatedpress.com I would call it hoops.
- 31:27I read your piece and I would call it hoops as I always do, as
- 31:29a really good read. As always.
- 31:31John Iowa College hoops.com for our buddy John Bowen Camp.
- 31:36We like talking to him, despite his baseball team.
- 31:40Good to talk to you, bud. We'll talk to nation.
- 31:43So you've said talk to you in a couple of weeks.
- 31:45See you, pal. You have a good one.
- 31:47See it. John Bowen Camp loves his
- 31:49Dodgers. Yes, he does.
- 31:51And he just didn't jump on the bandwagon.
- 31:53We should put that out there as well.
- 31:56God, that was a hell of a series.
- 31:57It really was. Bieber's staying.
- 31:59Did you see that? Is he?
- 32:01Yes, I don't know. They had fun up there.
- 32:05We'll see where it goes. Anyways, good stuff out of John
- 32:09Bowen Camp, good stuff out of Ben Mccollum's team yesterday.
- 32:12I love the fact, as you said, they I guess they carry that
- 32:15over from the Drake tradition, running around and slapping,
- 32:18slapping hands, not fans, hands up fans, just thanking them for
- 32:23being there. So that was that was pretty cool
- 32:25to watch and that was a fun game to watch, even though it's
- 32:28Robert Moore's excuses for, you know, maybe being a little bit
- 32:31over the top factor in the the competition, but.
- 32:35We admitted that we. Did, but it was just so
- 32:37different to watch them. The effort on the defensive end
- 32:41of the floor trend it was. There's a breath of fresh air.
- 32:44Night and day out, Yes it look like a different program.
- 32:48And it is. It is.
- 32:49Do you think now Friday they take on Western Illinois?
- 32:52Yeah, OK. But the following Friday they
- 32:56get Xavier, an appliance that people know now Xavier kind of a
- 33:01a bubble ish team coming into the year.
- 33:03That's where the projections are.
- 33:04But it's at least it's a brand. Yep, what kind of on a Friday
- 33:08night semi final Friday night 'cause I'll be in the Dome
- 33:10that's. Right.
- 33:12What kind of attendance do you anticipate for you know, can
- 33:15they push to 1213 thousand I. Was going to say they better top
- 33:18blow by 10. Yeah.
- 33:21I would like to see I I have to think last night went a long way
- 33:24towards that goal, I really do. I will tell you in one of the
- 33:28many text groups I and M1 of them to the guys completely
- 33:31checked out. Just couldn't watch it anymore.
- 33:33They play basketball in high school.
- 33:35They were good defensive players.
- 33:36They they couldn't stand watching it anymore last night.
- 33:40They're starting to make some plans for making some treks
- 33:42over. Today they were engaged.
- 33:44And I'm going to guess that those are not the only two
- 33:46people that saw my wife, talked about her at the top.
- 33:49Not a big basketball fan. When she saw McCullum throw the
- 33:53hands up, the smile on her face, I'm like, yeah, all right, when
- 33:56we when are we going over? But we taking the kids, What are
- 33:58we going to do it? What are we going to make it
- 34:00happen? It's just that kind of
- 34:02excitement. It builds and it can happen
- 34:04quickly. We know how good the Iowa
- 34:06basketball fan base can be because we see for the women's
- 34:08team and we've seen in the past, obviously for the men's team,
- 34:12Mccollum's a guy that a. Distant past, sadly.
- 34:14Yeah, it's been a long time. It's been a long time.
- 34:17There is there's a lot of tumors that need to be removed and and
- 34:22they go all the way back to the way it ended for Doctor Tom.
- 34:24A lot of people 25 years ago can't get over that.
- 34:28Steve Alford, Pierre Pierce, the disaster that was Licklider,
- 34:33McCaffrey and the kids. There's a lot of scar tissue.
- 34:37I'll. Call him the guy.
- 34:40So far I was, I was encouraged. I and you know what is I was
- 34:45watching it unfold last night and it wasn't lost on me just
- 34:48how much of A battle Cyhawks going to be on the especially
- 34:51defensive end of the floor because we know how I always
- 34:53take it. Yes.
- 34:55They just they they're not going to defence.
- 34:58They're not if you don't play defence, you're going to play
- 35:00This is this has got some it's got some cash 8 to it coming up
- 35:03in December. It really does.
- 35:05All right, tense plays of the day.
- 35:06They are next circus sports sponsor those Glad you're with
- 35:10us. Our final segment coming up
- 35:12next, Miller and Condon talking sports with you on the Iowa
- 35:14Sports Radio Network. I'm Melody Condon.
- 35:23Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network, Des Moines Sports
- 35:26Station One O 6.3 KXNO. Our final segment trends, plays
- 35:32of the day, Circus sports sponsored those plethora of
- 35:35college hoops today. Is that where you will be
- 35:37involved? Can I interest you in some
- 35:39action? Yes, yes you can.
- 35:41Both games. One game, no one game's got a a
- 35:45big number. The game Toledo Northern
- 35:48Illinois game seemingly plays every action and it's usually
- 35:52pretty good. I'm not sure tonight will be,
- 35:53but Toledo's one of those teams, Trent.
- 35:57They never cover as the favorite or very seldom.
- 36:00Yeah, Jason Candle's terrible as a.
- 36:02And outright loses a favorite and they're they're 15 point
- 36:06favorites at Circa. Well, I'm going to grab the 15
- 36:09points and give me the Huskies not playing that trend.
- 36:13Northern Illinois, really good defensively.
- 36:14They're awful offensively. Is that what it is?
- 36:17Because they're both, they're both two and two, correct?
- 36:19I think it's conference. Well.
- 36:21Or maybe one, maybe Northern Illinois one and three, but not
- 36:24a big difference. But it's not like ones at the
- 36:25top of the standings and ones at the basement.
- 36:28They're about right now in the middle there.
- 36:29Yeah, we're grabbing the points, going to grab the 15 with the
- 36:32Huskies in that one. And then it got 2 basketball
- 36:35games now. Awful start.
- 36:36College basketball, I told you a year ago, college basketball.
- 36:39It just never clicked for me last season, which is normally
- 36:42my sport. That is by far my best.
- 36:44Well, 57% of favourites have covered so far.
- 36:47That's a problem for me. That is a huge problem for me.
- 36:50What am I doing? Right back to the well again
- 36:52with two dogs tonight. I'm grabbing Southern Hill in
- 36:54Indiana and the 22 1/2 tonight as they take on the Butler
- 36:59Bulldogs. ESPN +4 that one also grabbing
- 37:03the points. You can get 23 Caesars.
- 37:06I might need it. I'm grabbing Tarlton State.
- 37:10Billy Gillespie is the coach there.
- 37:12Yeah. Say what you will about him as
- 37:13an individual, yeah, he's different.
- 37:15And there's there's plenty of things to say.
- 37:17Yeah, very few of them. But as a basketball coach, that
- 37:20dude can coach. Is there more in that profession
- 37:22than other professions? Say what you want about him as a
- 37:25person, but as a Bowser, we'll go.
- 37:27I think there's a lot of them that fall into that category.
- 37:29Absolutely. New LSU don't love kind of what
- 37:33they have roster wise this season, so we're going to grab
- 37:35the points and Gillespie 15 1/2. It's an ugly card.
- 37:38Southern Indiana, Northern Illinois, Tarleton State, which
- 37:42is not a state. Did you see the pushback on
- 37:44that? Oh, I didn't.
- 37:45So they played Abilene Christian in football over the weekend,
- 37:48OK. And they just had, you know, one
- 37:49of those graphics that the social media people put out,
- 37:52Charlton, not a state, ha ha. There was an apology that came
- 37:57from Abilene Christian admonituring their social media
- 38:01team for putting that out there. It is not the they said it's not
- 38:06a state. They didn't call them names.
- 38:08Right. Well, what are they?
- 38:10Where? Where are they?
- 38:11A state. They're not and not Yeah, on top
- 38:13of it. It's a fact, right?
- 38:16Yeah, it's good to. Say, I mean, somebody in the
- 38:19corner office must have got upset about that one and had
- 38:22some pushback. This is on the hardwood though.
