Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: What we need to learn from the Bondi attack
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: If you've just woken up twelve people dead at Bondai Beach.
- 0:04Speaker 1: After Bondai now seems obvious that anti Semitism is out
- 0:09Speaker 1: the gate, particularly in Australia with a large population who
- 0:12Speaker 1: hail from the Middle East, but increasingly so in this
- 0:14Speaker 1: country and increasingly so around the world. And I don't
- 0:17Speaker 1: think the genie is going to be put back into
- 0:19Speaker 1: the bottle anytime soon. The conflict in Gaza, starting with
- 0:23Speaker 1: a Hamas attack on the music festival in October twenty
- 0:25Speaker 1: twenty three, has only intensified the conflict between faiths, and
- 0:30Speaker 1: of course we don't want a victim blame, but Israel's
- 0:32Speaker 1: reaction to the original attack has not calm the situation,
- 0:35Speaker 1: but in fact further radicalize Muslims. And I've presented talkback
- 0:40Speaker 1: on the Gaza situation over the past two years. I
- 0:43Speaker 1: was always at pains to separate the Israeli state from
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Jewish faith, but that has been impossible to do
- 0:49Speaker 1: for both sides, and not helped by NETANYAHUO, who goes
- 0:53Speaker 1: out of his way to make sure you know, the
- 0:55Speaker 1: faith is the state and the state is the faith.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Any talk of the Ghazan bloodshed by Israel is always
- 1:02Speaker 1: pulled back and sheeted home to October seventh, twenty twenty
- 1:06Speaker 1: three in the moves by Hamas, and any talk about
- 1:08Speaker 1: the Hamas atrocity is always linked back to the Israeli countermoves.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Any criticism of Israel's actions is always branded anti Semitism
- 1:19Speaker 1: by supporters of Israel. Both sides now locked in a
- 1:23Speaker 1: deadly dance with no middle ground of peace, a dance
- 1:27Speaker 1: that has been there since nineteen forty eight, but today
- 1:30Speaker 1: is more furious than ever. Blessed are the peacemakers, they say,
- 1:35Speaker 1: but where are they? One reported blessing is that the
- 1:38Speaker 1: Australian hero who disarmed a Bondai attacker was himself an Arab,
- 1:43Speaker 1: a local fruit shop owner, hopefully showing that the killers
- 1:46Speaker 1: are not indicative of all Muslims, and hopefully that might
- 1:51Speaker 1: ease the wave of Islamophobia that is almost inevitable. But
- 1:55Speaker 1: I don't think so. For more from early edition with
