- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, we're back.
- 0:01Speaker 2: iHeart Music Lounge Tonight's guest artist Dan.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hurley with us.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Do you ever play music?
- 0:10Speaker 1: Were you ever an instrumentalist of any kind of years?
- 0:12Speaker 1: You Taughtta what I was using? I know you love music.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Well, things have changed.
- 0:17Speaker 4: I mean like in Jersey City growing up, if you
- 0:20Speaker 4: walked home with a musical instrument, I mean some another kid,
- 0:25Speaker 4: would you know?
- 0:27Speaker 3: Beat the heck? That wasn't It's different where I grew
- 0:29Speaker 3: up was different.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I know.
- 0:31Speaker 2: And we realize that that's also in the book. By
- 0:34Speaker 2: the way, never stopped new book. We're going to talk
- 0:37Speaker 2: a little bit more about that, but we're still on
- 0:39Speaker 2: the roster thing. Let's talk about recruiting freshman Braylen Mullins,
- 0:44Speaker 2: great player out of Indiana and Eric Riba, who we
- 0:48Speaker 2: got to see you against BC.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Both of those guys.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Uh So, the characteristics of guys young guys, you know,
- 0:55Speaker 2: they got talent. Obviously you're not going to mess around
- 0:57Speaker 2: with recruiting them if they don't have, you know, high
- 1:00Speaker 2: level talent.
- 1:00Speaker 1: But what other qualities do you need from guys like that?
- 1:03Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:03Speaker 4: So you know, they got to fit the way that yeah,
- 1:05Speaker 4: that we want to play, right, they got to be
- 1:07Speaker 4: a system fit. They got to be smart, you know,
- 1:09Speaker 4: they because because we do a lot of both ends
- 1:13Speaker 4: of the court. It's a you know, like there's a
- 1:16Speaker 4: lot of chance, there's a lot of opportunities to these
- 1:17Speaker 4: guys to make plays on the court and improvise. But
- 1:22Speaker 4: we play, you know, with relatively a high amount of
- 1:26Speaker 4: structure and what we're trying to do. So got to
- 1:29Speaker 4: be able to process the game. You gotta be able
- 1:31Speaker 4: to read things. You gotta be able to remember things,
- 1:33Speaker 4: got to be able to understand concepts.
- 1:35Speaker 3: So they have to be smart. They have to love
- 1:38Speaker 3: the game.
- 1:40Speaker 1: But don't most guys say they love the game.
- 1:42Speaker 4: No, you could tell if they love the game or
- 1:44Speaker 4: don't talk in the game. I mean, you watch film
- 1:46Speaker 4: I do want to visit for an hour and you
- 1:49Speaker 4: see who's lost interest within ten minutes. You know when
- 1:53Speaker 4: you lose interest something in ten minutes. You don't love it,
- 1:58Speaker 4: not the way that we love it, not the way
- 1:59Speaker 4: I love it, not the way Cam Spencer loves it,
- 2:01Speaker 4: not the way Snogo and Andre Jackson love it. So
- 2:05Speaker 4: you know, and then you you you so yeah, I
- 2:07Speaker 4: mean do they share because if the person that you know,
- 2:10Speaker 4: if I care. You know, if I'm obsessing over something
- 2:14Speaker 4: at the maximum level and I'm in an organization with
- 2:17Speaker 4: somebody that just likes it, there's gonna be a lot
- 2:20Speaker 4: of conflict there. You know, there's gonna be resentment. So yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 4: you've got to be on our level relative to the
- 2:26Speaker 4: commitment that's going to be necessary. And then at you know,
- 2:31Speaker 4: at that point, you just start looking around at parents.
- 2:34Speaker 4: You know, are they gonna think you you know, has
- 2:38Speaker 4: the guy been coached? Is he coming in with a
- 2:40Speaker 4: baseline of understanding where you're not starting? You know, he
- 2:44Speaker 4: doesn't have like a third grade ringing level relative to basketball,
- 2:47Speaker 4: like he's he's got an understanding and a baseline of things.
- 2:52Speaker 4: So yeah, I mean it's you know, there's a kid
- 2:54Speaker 4: on his phone on the visit, you know, like you're
- 2:56Speaker 4: at meals and you're spend so much time together. When
- 2:58Speaker 4: you get around there, you know, are they going to
- 3:02Speaker 4: bring something to the relationship or you're going to have
- 3:05Speaker 4: to drag them through your program?
- 3:07Speaker 3: You know, like things like that.
- 3:10Speaker 2: You can't miss either, right, I mean you got to
- 3:12Speaker 2: you have a short time to really assess this.
- 3:14Speaker 4: No, because we don't bring I mean, we're only moving
- 3:16Speaker 4: forward we're going to bring in one or two, maybe
- 3:19Speaker 4: three freshmen in a class that maybe one may be
- 3:23Speaker 4: a starter, another may be an impact player meeting like
- 3:28Speaker 4: a top seven, top eight rotation player that's going to
- 3:31Speaker 4: get real minutes. But then the third guy is, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 4: it's going to be fighting for his life to get
- 3:36Speaker 4: on the court. You can't play that many freshmen in
- 3:40Speaker 4: today's college basketball, so you've got to insulate your freshman
- 3:43Speaker 4: the way we did with Steph Cassel, you know, insulate
- 3:47Speaker 4: the you know, the freshman, the way we did with
- 3:49Speaker 4: Donovan Klingen and Alex as freshman. We didn't do as
- 3:53Speaker 4: good a job of that for Liam McNeely, you know,
- 3:57Speaker 4: and I think we did a much better job of
- 3:59Speaker 4: that for Braylin, And then we'll do a much better
- 4:02Speaker 4: job of that hypothetically if anyone else has committed to
- 4:06Speaker 4: our school in the future class.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Eric Raibo the other day, left hander, seven footer. Maybe
- 4:12Speaker 2: folks saw them. I saw him, we were at the arena.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We saw him. He looks like he has a huge upside.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, this guy's can be and it just it
- 4:21Speaker 4: hasn't been good for Tarist to miss so much time
- 4:24Speaker 4: because part of why Tarris played you know, so much
- 4:28Speaker 4: better at Yukon than he did at Michigan. Was because
- 4:31Speaker 4: of you know the practice, like the work in the summer,
- 4:35Speaker 4: you know, these twenty hour weeks that we're in with
- 4:37Speaker 4: the team on the court. Now, like that's where he
- 4:40Speaker 4: made a big jump and became so much more efficient
- 4:43Speaker 4: and better than he was at Michigan. So but Taris
- 4:47Speaker 4: being out has allowed us just to like really zero
- 4:50Speaker 4: in on Eric, and Eric's been put in uncomfortable positions,
- 4:54Speaker 4: which you know, starting to Boston College exhibition, not having
- 4:59Speaker 4: Taris to lead on the way Donovan did with Adama.
- 5:02Speaker 4: I mean, Donovan used to be able to come into
- 5:04Speaker 4: a game and play against the center that had been
- 5:07Speaker 4: just beat the hell by Adama. So now then Donovan
- 5:12Speaker 4: comes on the court. This just got you know, destroyed
- 5:15Speaker 4: by a Doma. That guy's battered, and now here comes Donovan,
- 5:19Speaker 4: whereas Eric now is getting the opportunity to get like
- 5:22Speaker 4: the Michigan State experience that he's going to get on
- 5:24Speaker 4: Tuesday night at at the People's Bank.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I'm trying to get used to that.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, so's he's he's going to be special though
- 5:33Speaker 4: he's very skilled. This guy has not missed a practice.
- 5:38Speaker 4: You know, he's seven foot so he's a big guy.
- 5:40Speaker 4: It was just there's so much to learn at that position.
- 5:43Speaker 4: There's so much to learn at center and point guard.
- 5:45Speaker 4: So but this guy. I believe so much of what
- 5:48Speaker 4: this guy is going to become. And he's in a
- 5:50Speaker 4: perfect situation. You know, support taris number one. We're gonna
- 5:54Speaker 4: get tariffs back in the court. And then number two.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Once once Eric is able to be that Donovan freshman
- 6:03Speaker 4: as a sophomore, Eric will be able to like, it'll
- 6:06Speaker 4: be his thing, and then and then let's go.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And Riba didn't look like he got discouraged the other night.
- 6:11Speaker 1: A couple of.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Things went wrong for him, missed a layup or two.
- 6:14Speaker 2: He didn't hang his head. I mean, he was just
- 6:17Speaker 2: right back at her. He knows like that, Yeah, he knows.
- 6:19Speaker 2: He missed more than two layups. We covered it all
- 6:24Speaker 2: over the course the next couple of days. But he
- 6:27Speaker 2: he doesn't blank. You know, he doesn't blank.
- 6:29Speaker 4: The guy comes from a great you know, great great family,
- 6:32Speaker 4: great parents. His mom's a firefighter, I mean, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 4: Martinez a firefighter in Switzerland.
- 6:39Speaker 3: He's from Jerremany.
- 6:40Speaker 4: They moved there, so he just comes from really good people,
- 6:43Speaker 4: and the guy's gonna be an excellent player. And for
- 6:45Speaker 4: an opening night there, I thought he handled himself really well.
- 6:49Speaker 4: And Tuesday night, though, it's gonna be it's gonna be
- 6:52Speaker 4: a tough challenge for him versus like a Big ten
- 6:55Speaker 4: team that's that physical, So that'll be just a great preparation.
- 6:59Speaker 4: That was a mistake we made last year. We didn't
- 7:01Speaker 4: play hard enough exhibitions. So then when we got to
- 7:05Speaker 4: those non conference games where we saw Memphis for the
- 7:08Speaker 4: first time and we didn't play harder exhibition games, that
- 7:13Speaker 4: hurt us early.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Right, No, that's not going to happen this year, all right,
- 7:15Speaker 2: Dan Hurley with us back in just a moment. The
- 7:18Speaker 2: Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show here on Liar Field
