- 1:25journey through Jeremiah 18,
- 1:271-6 and reminds us that God never
- 1:31throws the clay away and that there is restoration in the potter's house.
- 1:36Hello, and thank you for joining us in this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries.
- 1:40We're going to take a look at Jeremiah 18, 1 through 6, and I want you to look
- 1:46at this passage of Scripture through this lens of 2 Peter 3, 9.
- 1:51The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness,
- 1:56but is long-suffering to usward, not willing that any should perish,
- 2:02but that all should come to repentance.
- 2:06There isn't a person ever born that the Lord did not want to spend eternity with him.
- 2:13There has never been a person who has done anything that was further than the hand of God could reach.
- 2:21There's never been a person whose actions, behavior, whose being was beyond
- 2:30the love and the grace and the mercy of Jesus Christ.
- 2:33And we often put ourselves in these places where we hold ourselves to a standard that can't be met.
- 2:40Simply because we are human. And we hold ourselves in a higher standard than
- 2:49God himself does, because God has grace that we often do not bestow upon ourselves.
- 2:55And God gives mercy to us that we often withhold from ourselves.
- 3:01And more importantly, God's love is unconditional.
- 3:05Not only do we seem to love others conditionally,
- 3:10We often love ourselves on the condition that we are getting what we want,
- 3:15doing what we want, or that we're meeting some standard that's arbitrarily set
- 3:21by either us or those around us.
- 3:24But the truth of the matter is, everybody loves.
- 3:29Is loved by God, and everybody who submits themselves to God is fashioned on the potter's wheel.
- 3:41Let's read. The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
- 3:46Arise and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.
- 3:52Then I went down to the potter's house, and behold, he wrought a work on the
- 3:56wheels, and the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter.
- 4:01So he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
- 4:06Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, O house of Israel,
- 4:11can I not do with you as this potter, saith the Lord?
- 4:17Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.
- 4:26May the Lord have his richest blessing on the reading of his word.
- 4:31There's some interesting things right in the get-go of this chapter.
- 4:37The first one that strikes me is that the word came to Jeremiah from the Lord.
- 4:43Jeremiah had to be a person who was acquainted with God.
- 4:48Now, we know that from what we know of Jeremiah. but think about it from this perspective.
- 4:56The Lord sought out Jeremiah to speak to him, and Jeremiah recognized his voice.
- 5:07And I think too often we are so busy in our lives that when God is nudging us
- 5:13or saying something to us, we simply don't hear it.
- 5:18And we have so much noise of the world in our lives that we often nudge God out completely.
- 5:26But I want you to know that Jeremiah understood who God was.
- 5:33And he could understand his voice. And when he said,
- 5:37Arise and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear
- 5:42my words, he heard him tell him to go, and in his obedience, he then met him there.
- 5:52See, this is a continuous process that speaks to Jeremiah's relationship with God.
- 6:01First, God comes to Jeremiah. He hears his voice, and he tells him to arise and go.
- 6:09And when you get there, I'm going to talk to you.
- 6:13So Jeremiah, in all essence, is going to the potter's house out of straight
- 6:20obedience with an expectation to hear from the Lord.
- 6:26And I believe that should cause all of our hearts and our minds to stir.
- 6:31When is the last time you were listening for the voice of God?
- 6:36When is the last time that you expectantly waited and was still and knew that
- 6:43he was God like we're told to do in Psalms 46.10?
- 6:47If you were honest with yourself, would you have obeyed with that expectation?
- 6:56Arise and go. And when you get there, I'll tell you what you need to know.
- 7:03Most of us aren't wired that way. We're wired to get the whole story,
- 7:08the whole plan, the whole shebang.
- 7:11And then we decide, is it worth our effort?
- 7:15That's really what we're deciding when God calls us to do something and we weigh
- 7:21it. we're determining whether or not it's worthy.
- 7:28And then we're determining whether or not we're willing to do it.
- 7:34But it all starts with being able to hear him.
- 7:37The psalmist David tells us plainly that if we hide iniquity in our heart, God will not hear us.
- 7:44And so Jeremiah is showing us right here, if you want for God to lead you and
- 7:51direct you, you're going to have to submit to him and you're going to have to follow his commands.
- 7:58If you're interested in knowing what God wants you to do, you're going to have
- 8:04to spend some time talking to him through his word and through prayer.
- 8:09And then you've got to do it with a purpose in your heart that you'll follow what it is he says.
- 8:17Because just as the potter has a plan for the clay, so too does God have a plan for you.
- 8:26You weren't haphazardly made. We're told that he knew you in your mother's womb.
- 8:31You weren't an afterthought, an accident, a mistake.
- 8:36No matter what the world has told you or people that you love have told you,
- 8:41the truth is you were wonderfully and beautifully made.
- 8:46And God has had his hands on your life all of your life.
- 8:53And he has a plan for you. He tells us in Jeremiah 29, 11, For I know the thoughts
- 8:59that I think toward you, sayeth the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil,
- 9:02to give you an expected end.
- 9:04God has a plan for you, and it's a good one.
- 9:08Regardless of what you have or haven't done, he's waiting with open arms and.
- 9:14Nail-scarred hands, already proving his love for you.
- 9:19He's waiting to receive you unto himself.
- 9:23I think we forget how very precious we are.
- 9:29In Genesis 1.27, we are told that so God created in his own image,
- 9:36in the image of God created he him, male and female created him them.
- 9:42You're not a mistake. You're not an error. You're not a marred piece of clay.
- 9:47The things you've done do not define who you are.
- 9:53They demonstrate some things about you, but they're not definitive of who you are.
- 9:59One mistake does not erase hundreds of doing things right.
- 10:06That's why in no academic setting? Are you required to get all of it right?
- 10:12Even to get the A, you don't have to get 100. We are fallible human beings,
- 10:17and he said we're to strive towards the prize of the high calling.
- 10:21We are to live our lives in such a way that we are seeking God's will,
- 10:26and we are obeying his voice.
- 10:29But we were made in his image. You bear his image, and as Christians,
- 10:35you bear his name. He's invested in you.
- 10:39There is no way that he won't drop you or leave you.
- 10:45He's not going to drop you or leave you. There's no way he's going to forsake you.
- 10:51In Hebrews 13, 5, he says he'll never leave you nor forsake you.
- 10:55You are his creation.
- 10:59We are wired as humans to love those we create.
- 11:05We are wired as people to take care of and love the things that are ours,
- 11:15the things that resemble who we are or are demonstrations of what we can do.
- 11:20But in 1 Corinthians 6, 19 through 20, he says, What?
- 11:26Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you?
- 11:32Which ye have of God, and ye are not of your own, for ye are bought with a price.
- 11:37Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.
- 11:42This entire account in Jeremiah 18, 1 through 6 is an account that teaches us
- 11:48many lessons, but one of them for sure is that we matter.
- 11:52You matter to the Lord. You cannot escape his love.
- 11:58You cannot escape his
- 12:02presence no matter how high you go
- 12:05how far deep you go no matter how far left or
- 12:07right whether you're in the light or in the dark he is
- 12:10there he's created you and he has bought you with a price it was a great price
- 12:18god sent his son to die on the cross of calvary that those who receive him as
- 12:26Savior would have everlasting life,
- 12:29and it cost Jesus his life.
- 12:34You were bought with the sinless, spotless, priceless blood of the Lamb of God.
- 12:41Its value is not measurable.
- 12:45And you know what? That's a concept we can understand.
- 12:50Because when we buy a fancy car, we protect it. You insure it. You wax it.
- 12:58You park in two parking spots so nobody can dent your car or ding your bumper.
- 13:04You look at it. You park it in light places. You talk about it.
- 13:10Things that we spend a lot of money on, we keep track of because they're valuable.
- 13:19You take care of the things that you have bought with a great price.
- 13:24And you'll use it until you can get every drop of benefit or value from it.
- 13:31It's kind of like the toothpaste.
- 13:34You really don't pay a lot for a tube of toothpaste in the end,
- 13:38but for a tube of toothpaste, it's a lot of money.
- 13:42And so you'll roll the end up, you'll smash around on it, you'll get every drop.
- 13:49Or your favorite conditioner for your hair. You'll bang that thing on the side of the shower.
- 13:54You'll do whatever you can to get that last drop out because you've probably
- 14:00paid an absorbent amount of money for some designer hair conditioner.
- 14:05So it is of great value to you.
- 14:08So you watch it, you hold it, you take care of it.
- 14:12Perhaps you have an expensive vase from Blinko or an expensive painting.
- 14:19You paid a great price for it. And so you as humans and myself, we take care of it.
- 14:28We don't mistreat it. We don't ignore it.
- 14:33We don't give up. We don't leave it unprotected.
- 14:38How much more will Jesus Christ, who created us in his image,
- 14:43who bought us with his own life, work with us and take care of us and get every
- 14:50bit of benefit and usefulness out of us.
- 14:53This is what we learn from the potter's house.
- 14:57Jeremiah has a relationship with the Lord, and we as Christians have a relationship with him.
- 15:03Jeremiah knew his voice, and he trusted him enough to go exactly where he says
- 15:10so that he can get the more information that comes with being obedient to the word of the Lord.
- 15:19Jeremiah could trust the Lord because he absolutely knew that nothing was going
- 15:26to separate him from him.
- 15:29As we continue to look at this, he goes to the potter's house,
- 15:32and when he goes down to the potter's house, he sees the potter working on the pottery wheel.
- 15:41The Lord was making a point to Jeremiah.
- 15:46You know how Jeremiah understood, at least to the extent that all of us understand,
- 15:52how a pottery wheel works, the role of the potter on the wheel.
- 15:59But he didn't choose to tell him at his house.
- 16:05He asked him to trust him and to go so that he could see the analogy he was making.
- 16:15Sometimes God will ask us to do things, and it confounds our minds.
- 16:21It'll seem so easy or so logical or so simple that we decide that can't be from God.
- 16:34But Jeremiah here shows us that when God says, Arise and go,
- 16:39you don't need to qualify, quantify, evaluate, or analyze what he's going to say next.
- 16:46You need to arise and go. And when Jeremiah goes to the potter's house,
- 16:54something amazing happens.
- 16:57The Lord is going to reveal to Jeremiah through this process that he can see,
- 17:04hear, and understand how we too are the clay, and he is the potter.
- 17:12Jeremiah is going to pen an incredible lesson here.
- 17:18And so in verse 4, we see, and the vessel that he made of clay was marred in
- 17:23the hand of the potter. It was messed up.
- 17:26It wasn't exactly what the potter had envisioned it would be.
- 17:32And so he says, so he made it again another vessel, asking good to the potter to make it.
- 17:40I want you to see some things here. First of all, I want you to see he did not
- 17:46throw the clay away because it was marred.
- 17:53I want you to also notice that he didn't change his mind about using the clay.
- 18:01He simply remolded the clay.
- 18:04God has a plan for you, as we spoke about earlier. it's a good plan,
- 18:09and he's not going to change it on a whim.
- 18:14He has picked out the perfect plan for the skill set he's given you,
- 18:20for the personality he has created in you, for the work he has planned for you to do.
- 18:28And just because you've gotten a late start because you may have made some other
- 18:33decisions does not in any way mean that you've disqualified yourself from the work of the Lord.
- 18:40Just because you have made some mistakes in your life or come to know him late.
- 18:50Not mean he's not using you because he's always the potter and we are always the clay.
- 18:57So he doesn't change his minds because of your mistake.
- 19:02And he doesn't throw you away.
- 19:06He simply molds you into what he wants you to be.
- 19:11Now let's talk about this process for a moment.
- 19:15He puts some pressure on that clay, and he turns the wheel.
- 19:22And to make it do certain things, he puts more pressure, and then as it's doing
- 19:28what it needs to do, he puts a little less pressure, and when he needs to make
- 19:32a change, he puts a little bit more.
- 19:35This is how God works. And at any time in this process, if something goes awry,
- 19:42he doesn't throw the clay away.
- 19:45He picks it up, puts it on the wheel, and he continues to work with it.
- 19:51And Romans 8, 38 and 39 explains why God doesn't throw the clay away.
- 19:57He says, For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels,
- 20:03nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present,
- 20:07nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able
- 20:14to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.
- 20:19You can't get away from the love of God.
- 20:24You can't disqualify yourself from the love of God.
- 20:29You can't be so bad that God won't love you. You can't make too many mistakes.
- 20:37You were created in his image.
- 20:40He has a purpose and a plan for you, and he's gonna see it through.
- 20:45That's how much he loves you.
- 20:49But on that wheel requires absolute obedience.
- 20:56That piece of clay has no resistance.
- 21:01The knowledge of God that Jeremiah exhibits in the opening of this chapter is
- 21:08one that shows us the value of obedience.
- 21:13Those that would know God's mind must observe his appointments and attend to his words.
- 21:20Jeremiah had an appointment with the Lord, and it was at the potter's house.
- 21:26If at any time in this process, Jeremiah had chosen not to be speaking to the
- 21:31Lord at that time, he wouldn't have gotten the message to go to the potter's house.
- 21:37Got the message to go to the potter's house, and he was just a little too tired,
- 21:41or he didn't like the potter, or he didn't care for pottery at all,
- 21:47and said, nope, I'll pass on this one.
- 21:51Had any time Jeremiah not been obedient, he would have missed what God had to
- 21:58say to him, not where he was, but where God had sent him to in our lives.
- 22:05We sometimes get comfortable. We're comfy Christians.
- 22:09We like it in our little church. We like it in our Bible study.
- 22:14We like it in our small group.
- 22:16And then God says we need to get up and arise and go somewhere else where they
- 22:21don't know us for a moment to teach someone whom we may not have a relationship with,
- 22:29even to go and assist and help someone that perhaps we have a bad relationship with.
- 22:36To go somewhere we've never been.
- 22:39Have great respect for every missionary God has ever called and who went.
- 22:46What a sacrifice.
- 22:48They hear the call and they go. And we've all not been called to be missionaries,
- 22:53but we've all been called to hear the voice of God and to go when he says go
- 22:59that might mean a hospital visit that might mean showing up at the avocado aisle at Kroger's,
- 23:06at a certain time that might mean passing your favorite gas station to go to
- 23:12the one that God says go and when you get there not only is the word of the
- 23:16Lord inserted in you to say to someone else but someone else has been helped,
- 23:22because you were where you're supposed to be.
- 23:26We have to keep our appointments with God. I encourage all of you,
- 23:31have a set time to read and to pray.
- 23:35That doesn't mean it's the only time you do it.
- 23:37But every day, make an appointment with God. He's there.
- 23:42And then you get victory over the blanket if it's an early morning one or a late night one.
- 23:48And you come and you show up because he will be there. and in the obedience
- 23:52to study his word, to know it and rightly divide it.
- 23:57He will tell you things that you don't know, and oh, other way would you know,
- 24:04that are beneficial and helpful, not only for the purpose he has for you,
- 24:10but for your life and enjoyment in this world.
- 24:13He said in John 10.10, I have come that they might have life and have it more
- 24:17abundantly. He loves you, but it requires us to leave our comfort zone.
- 24:25Eye yourself and to take up his cross and to follow him, as he tells us in Matthew 16.24.
- 24:31Jeremiah didn't go to prepare a sermon, but he went to receive a message.
- 24:36He didn't go to speak. He went to receive.
- 24:41He was told to go to the potter's house, and he knew where it was, and he went.
- 24:47Are you familiar with God's word?
- 24:50When God is speaking to your heart, do you know where to go?
- 24:55It's no crime to not know it, but it is a dreadful sorrow to not seek it.
- 25:03We need to be in the Word. We need to study to show ourselves approved.
- 25:08We need to be equipped, because He's already given it to us.
- 25:13From Genesis to Revelations, we have everything we need to be holy in this world and godly.
- 25:19But we got to know him. He had a relationship with him that allowed Jeremiah
- 25:25to know God and to trust him.
- 25:29My question to you is, do you?
- 25:32And perhaps, as we look at this potter and the wheel,
- 25:39one of the most amazing things that is revealed is that God has the power to
- 25:46form you and to transform.
- 25:50He has formed you in His image. We learned that in the beginning.
- 25:54And somewhere down the line, we may have stepped left or right of the center
- 25:58of God's will. We may have made some bad decisions.
- 26:02We may have fallen into sin.
- 26:04We may not even be able to know how we got where we got.
- 26:09But it was one small step after another, and we just found ourselves away from God.
- 26:15But God was always there.
- 26:17He didn't leave us. The distance you were feeling wasn't him.
- 26:22His arms were reaching for you. You were running from him.
- 26:27Formed you in his image he bought you with his his blood
- 26:30and he can transform you if you've gone astray if you've moved left or right
- 26:36of the center of god's will god's absolute power to shape and mold his creation
- 26:42is shown in the fact that he tells us he is just like the potter and the potter
- 26:47shapes and molds his creation.
- 26:52Action of transforming marred and broken and messed up clay into different vessels,
- 27:02it symbolizes God's ability to reshape and redeem his people,
- 27:09even when they're false, which is all of us.
- 27:12Every one of us has skeletons in our heart that we don't let anyone else know
- 27:17about, but God knows about him, and he still loves you. You know how I know that?
- 27:22Because in John chapter 4, when the woman at the well came to him,
- 27:27he began to talk to her, and he told her everything she'd ever done, not to condemn her,
- 27:35not to bring shame to her, but to let her know, I know everything there is to
- 27:40know about you, and I'm still waiting at this well for you, and I still love you.
- 27:46Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
- 27:51But it requires the clay to be pliable in the hand of the potter.
- 27:59God is so powerful that there is destruction.
- 28:04If you choose not to allow him to shape you and to mold you and to make you
- 28:08into what you ought to be.
- 28:10But it's your choice to not get on the potter's wheel.
- 28:14It isn't that the opportunity isn't given to you. God is reaching out with nail-scarred
- 28:20hands, and he's asking all you, come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy
- 28:23laden, and I will give you rest.
- 28:25Take my yoke upon you. It is easy, and my burden is light.
- 28:31Jesus loves me, this I know. And you must be responsive to God's hand and his voice.
- 28:39There's a human responsibility for us to be responsive to God's hand and to
- 28:46be like the clay in the potter.
- 28:48To avoid his judgment and embrace his transforming power and his transforming
- 28:53work in our lives, we have to submit ourselves under the mighty hand of God
- 28:58that he would exalt us. in due time.
- 29:02God's not finished with you. And maybe today was a great day.
- 29:07And maybe tomorrow will be your
- 29:09day you make your mistake. Maybe 25 years ago, you made a bad decision.
- 29:14You fell into some sin and you did some things you can't take back.
- 29:18But the Bible says, but there is therefore now no more condemnation to them
- 29:22that are in Christ Jesus.
- 29:25We have been forgiven. Yet many in this day have elevated themselves above God
- 29:34and are judging themselves as unworthy.
- 29:38The only thing that keeps you from the potter's wheel is the choice to not be on it.
- 29:45God's not finished with you.
- 29:48You think you failed. God takes broken pieces, and he makes something beautiful
- 29:54and useful again, and he doesn't give up on you.
- 29:58God loves you. And the truth that we see in this passage of Scripture in Jeremiah 18,
- 30:061-6, is that God's power is so strong that we can't resist it when we're on the potter's will.
- 30:15It's easy for God to do whatever he wants with us and to change us however he chooses.
- 30:21We can't resist his power when he forces it upon us.
- 30:26And that's the problem in destruction.
- 30:28When we've chosen not to be pliable and we've gone away from his will and we've
- 30:37led ourselves astray from his commandments.
- 30:40We're not on the potter's will, but we're safe on the potter's will,
- 30:45even if we're flawed and marred, because those nail-scarred hands are putting
- 30:49just the right amount of pressure to create exactly what he wants us to be,
- 30:53and he's transforming our mistakes into stepping stones of glory and tests for
- 30:59testimonies, and he's making us into something that says, I once was lost, but now I'm found.
- 31:05I once was blind, but now I see.
- 31:07I once walked in darkness, but now the light of the Lord is in me.
- 31:11This is what he does when we sit on the potter's wheel.
- 31:16Just one turn of his hand, one turn of the wheel, it alters the shape of the clay.
- 31:23It remakes it, it creates it, it makes it new.
- 31:27So too are we in the hands of God. Don't strive against Him.
- 31:35The Lord is much more capable than the potter.
- 31:43He creates, and he transforms. He makes, and he molds. God is sovereign.
- 31:52Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord.
- 31:56And their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us, and who knoweth us?
- 32:02Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay.
- 32:07For shall the work say to him that made it, He made me not?
- 32:11Or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it? He had no understanding.
- 32:18Isaiah 29, 15 through 16 shows us the sovereignty of God.
- 32:23God has a clear title to dominion over all of us.
- 32:28Much more than the potter has over the clay. God has absolute power.
- 32:33The potter can only shape what is there, but God has given us matter and form.
- 32:39And he reshapes and he shapes and he loves and he's merciful and he's graceful.
- 32:45As the clay is in the potter's hands to be shaped and molded,
- 32:49so are we in God's hands, but we must submit to him and put ourselves on the potter's wheel.
- 32:56We're safe there. God is sovereign over us.
- 33:01He's not a debtor to us. He doesn't owe us anything.
- 33:04He can do what he wants with us, and he's accountable only to himself.
- 33:11He's not accountable to us.
- 33:14It would be crazy to think that this potter with a lump of clay on this wheel.
- 33:22This clay had more power than the potter.
- 33:26Yet we live our lives knowing that he is the potter and we are the clay.
- 33:32But we take the reins from his hands. We take decisions in our own minds.
- 33:40We walk away from who he is.
- 33:43We move ourselves from his correction.
- 33:47And then the plan he has for us of our own choosing.
- 33:52It doesn't come to fruition, but now, O Lord, thou art our Father.
- 33:57We are the clay, and thou art potter, and we are all the work of thy hand.
- 34:03So many times in Scripture.
- 34:07Correlates potter and clay to him and us. Under the similitude of how the potterer
- 34:14molds the clay, the Lord himself molds and makes us if we would just turn ourselves over to him.
- 34:23See, you're not so far that you can't get back on the potter's wheel.
- 34:28His hands are outstretched. He's asking you to come unto me, all you that labor.
- 34:35He's asking you to come back to him. Those that are wayward, he's saying, I am here.
- 34:41You don't have to do a thing. Just as the water is splashed upon the clay and
- 34:48it makes it pliable and moldable,
- 34:52that water of life that springs within Jesus Christ, that never runs dry,
- 35:00splashes on us, it covers us.
- 35:04It gives us life, and he's always waiting with loving arms to welcome you back
- 35:11and place you on the potter's clay, and he will remove your flaws.
- 35:16He will take away the effects of sin.
- 35:19He will make you usable and beautiful and all you ever were meant to be.
- 35:25He says in 1 John 1.9 that if we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to
- 35:30forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 35:35Jesus loves me. This I know. For the Bible tells me so.
- 35:41Oh, my friends, I want you to see clearly.
- 35:48But now, oh Lord, thou art our father. We are the clay and thou our potter.
- 35:54And we all are the work of thy hand. you see a potter can only mold the clay
- 36:02when it lies completely in his hand it requires complete surrender.
- 36:10Words from Corrie Ten Boom. He's the potter, and we are the clay.
- 36:16And when he speaks, we've got to be listening.
- 36:22And our relationship has to be such that we trust him.
- 36:27And obedience must be our mantra.
- 36:31It must be our way, the way of obedience.
- 36:37Obedience requires complete surrender,
- 36:41and if we're going to be molded and shaped into what God wants us to be,
- 36:48we're going to have to surrender your past won't keep you from being what God
- 36:53wants you to be it comes down to this one choice will you surrender,
- 36:59and present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God,
- 37:04which is your reasonable service.
- 37:07Come to the Potter's house. Redemption is for all.
