- 0:28Welcome to the Shift podcast episode 156.
- 0:31Permission to feel confident. This is actually a podcast
- 0:34episode that I have been wanting to do for a while and I've been
- 0:40putting it off, putting it off, putting it off.
- 0:41And then all of a sudden this is the topic that I have been
- 0:43coaching on inside my one-on-one and inside my programs lately.
- 0:47So I realized this is a week that we're going to do it.
- 0:49So today we're going to just talk about confidence.
- 0:53And what I'm noticing is a lot of people pulling back and being
- 0:59fully out confident and giving them permission to play out
- 1:04fully confident because of this thought air that they have that
- 1:08they don't want to be overly confident or cocky.
- 1:11And I want to talk about this for a second because I think
- 1:14that this thought right here really has people not create big
- 1:19things for themselves and not play out big when you're afraid
- 1:25of being cocky or overly confident, we have to like
- 1:28breakdown what the definition of that is.
- 1:31And for me, when I think about cocky, I think about cocky means
- 1:35to me like if you're cocky, you think that you're better than
- 1:39someone else. And I just think for the people
- 1:43that I work with and the majority of you guys listening
- 1:46and you, it's like really asking yourself, is it possible that
- 1:50you could ever get to the point of feeling like you're better
- 1:52than someone else? And when I truly am honest and I
- 1:55ask myself that, I don't think that I can get to that.
- 1:59I don't think that that's possible for me.
- 2:00I know my limitations. I know what I'm good at.
- 2:04I know what I'm not good at. And I just never go in my mind
- 2:07to, I think that I'm better than anyone else.
- 2:09So I think it's like when you actually play out, what does it
- 2:12mean to be cocky? Is it possible to asking
- 2:15yourself, is it possible that you think that you could be
- 2:17better than anyone else? And if you're really honest and
- 2:20the answer is no, then just allow yourself to play out big.
- 2:26Give yourself full permission to be confident in who you are,
- 2:31what you know, who you want to be, the things that you're
- 2:35really, really good at. I do want to offer you.
- 2:38When you give yourself permission to play out big and
- 2:41be confident, you give others permission to.
- 2:43And that's like really a thought that I've held on to as a nurse,
- 2:48especially in critical care and as flight.
- 2:50I knew what my limitations were. I knew that I was a really,
- 2:54really good at being transparent, saying the hard
- 2:56things in the moments, being able to say, hey, I'm not that
- 3:00familiar with that device or I'm not that familiar how to do
- 3:02that. Can you show me this or ask a
- 3:06bunch of questions? I wasn't afraid to say, I don't
- 3:09know, can you show me? And also I was super confident
- 3:13in being able to find the resources, the person or ask the
- 3:16right questions to know what that is.
- 3:18And so I think confidence is really honesty with yourself
- 3:22too, of like, what are the things that you're really,
- 3:23really good at? What are the things that you're
- 3:25not so good at? And giving yourself permission
- 3:28to play out on what those things were.
- 3:30So as a flight nurse, for example, one of the things that
- 3:32I was really good at was saying the hard thing in the moments
- 3:36that it needed to be said, being willing to be truthful with both
- 3:40myself, my patient, or the team that I was receiving the patient
- 3:44from or letting the patient go. And then there was some
- 3:49situations where people didn't agree with me and so I had to
- 3:54ask myself, I know all of you guys have those situations where
- 3:57you're afraid to be overly confident because you are afraid
- 3:59to have someone say something about your confidence.
- 4:03So when that did happen, which it did because I do show up very
- 4:09confident in myself no matter how I am feeling in the inside,
- 4:13when those situations did happen and they were brought back to
- 4:16me, I had to ask myself whether it was like they were being rude
- 4:19or she was talking over me. I had to ask myself was I doing
- 4:24that in that moment and be honest?
- 4:26And sometimes I was. Maybe it was for whatever
- 4:29reason, and that's never an excuse.
- 4:32Maybe for every reason there was a time constraint or we need to
- 4:34get the patient going or something, whether was coming in
- 4:37or something. And so I asked myself in those
- 4:40moments when people do criticize me or give me that feedback, was
- 4:45I being rude in that moment? If the answer is yes, then I'm
- 4:48going to critique and and self reflect and do what I need to do
- 4:52to do better next time. But if the answer was no, then I
- 4:56have to be honest with myself. And this is where you have to be
- 5:00willing to feel an emotion when someone disagrees with your with
- 5:06your level of confidence or when someone disagrees with you.
- 5:10And so if I wasn't, if I did ask myself, was I being rude?
- 5:14Was I being any of those things? And the answer was no, then I
- 5:18have to be willing to feel an emotion.
- 5:20And for me, the motion I have to be willing to feel is
- 5:23misunderstood and I have to be willing to allow myself, give
- 5:28myself permission to be confident and then be willing to
- 5:30feel misunderstood if I was not being that person and so
- 5:35misunderstood. Sometimes it's discomfort,
- 5:40sometimes it's disappointment. Ask yourself the question of if
- 5:46you are not being that person or rude or whatever they're saying
- 5:50you're being accusing of, what's the feeling that you have to
- 5:53allow when someone disagrees with how you behave and know
- 5:58what that is? And for me, because I could name
- 6:00it, I knew it was misunderstood. I knew that that sometimes with
- 6:04confidence comes the feeling of being willing to feel
- 6:07misunderstood. Another thing that stops people
- 6:12from being confident is a negative emotion that they don't
- 6:16want to have. So sometimes we try to push away
- 6:20whatever that is instead of just allowing it.
- 6:23So I'm going to give you guys an example.
- 6:25I've been really talking about how I had to deliver this
- 6:29discussion slash topic message to about 150 to 200 youth from
- 6:36the ages of 12 to 18. And when they first asked me how
- 6:39to, they first they asked me to do this about six weeks ago, I
- 6:43had a lot of fear and I had this thought of like, why me?
- 6:46Why are they asking me? And I had a lot of anxiety.
- 6:50And I two weeks into after asking me and spinning and like
- 6:54not sleeping and thinking about it a lot, I asked myself like,
- 6:57why am I having so much anxiety about it?
- 6:59And I realized I was having anxiety because I was having
- 7:02fear of rejection, fear of failure, all of these things.
- 7:06And when I realized that I could just allow the feeling instead
- 7:10of pushing it away, I realized that I could just bring the fear
- 7:15with me. And I realized I was having
- 7:17anxiety because I was trying to push down the fear and get rid
- 7:20of it. And at that two week mark in of
- 7:23them asking me and I said to myself, wait, this is just fear.
- 7:27I can allow fear to be there. I just went ahead and brought it
- 7:31with me. And I think sometimes when we're
- 7:33taking big actions, we're doing big things.
- 7:36When we're making big goals for ourselves and then going out
- 7:39there and trying to achieve them, a negative emotion comes
- 7:43up and we try to get rid of it. And we think, well, we can't
- 7:46have fear and we can't be confident at the same time.
- 7:50And so when I finally recognized, oh, wait, this is
- 7:52normal. I'm having fear of rejection.
- 7:54I'm having fear of failure. I'm going to just bring this
- 7:57with me. And I can still show up
- 8:00confidently. Like holding space for those
- 8:02both may be opposing emotions. I was like, oh, wait, I've done
- 8:08this before. I've landed at scenes with
- 8:11multiple accidents and multiple bodies and multiple things going
- 8:14on. I had fear, I had doubt.
- 8:17And I still confidently figured it out.
- 8:19So this was just an example of of just allowing whatever the
- 8:24hard emotion is or negative emotion, bringing it with you
- 8:28and realizing that you can be confident at the same time.
- 8:33Another thing that really helped me as I was preparing for this
- 8:37talk is I asked myself, and I want you guys to think about
- 8:41what is the big thing you're working towards?
- 8:44What is the big goal you're trying to accomplish?
- 8:46Or maybe it's just like I'm trying to get higher than this
- 8:49department or I'm trying to have a better relationship with a
- 8:52family member. I want you guys to to ask
- 8:56yourself, what is the feeling that I want to have after I've
- 9:01accomplished or done the thing? What is the feeling that I want
- 9:05to have after I've accomplished or done the thing?
- 9:07So for example, when it comes to this talk, when I asked myself
- 9:11that, the feeling that I wanted to have that I knew that I was
- 9:16going to have after I did, it was the feeling of proud.
- 9:20And so I just asked myself, how can I generate feeling proud
- 9:26now? And I gave myself all of these
- 9:29answers. I'm proud of accepting the
- 9:33challenge. I'm proud of writing the talk.
- 9:36I'm proud of thinking about how I can serve this subset of youth
- 9:41and group. I'm proud of the message that I
- 9:44know that I'm going to deliver. I'm proud of, however it goes,
- 9:47just doing the hard thing and showing up.
- 9:51And so I want to offer you guys the same thing.
- 9:53Ask yourself these two questions.
- 9:55What's the feeling you're going to have after you've done the
- 9:58thing or accomplish the thing? And then how do you generate
- 10:02that feeling now? And I know that that's kind of
- 10:06sounds opposite because we think, oh, it's not okay to feel
- 10:09that until after it's done, but this is what's going to move you
- 10:12through this. And So what I held at the same
- 10:17time was these feelings of fear and also turning up generating
- 10:25the emotion of being proud. And when I did that, it allowed
- 10:29me to step into who I wanted to be now, not waiting to be her at
- 10:34the end of the talk. I stepped into her now.
- 10:38And that created a lot of peace for me.
- 10:42It allowed me to realize I don't have to wait to feel proud.
- 10:45I can feel proud now. So whatever The thing is you're
- 10:48working on, ask yourself, what is the feeling that you want to
- 10:51have at the end of this? And start generating that
- 10:54feeling now. This is the work that we're
- 10:56doing inside the shift. This is what we are tackling as
- 11:00we're creating big things and also asking ourselves as what we
- 11:03want as we're shifting into the life we want to live and being
- 11:07willing to take both. Maybe opposing emotions with
- 11:10this at the same time. So feelings of fear, feeling of
- 11:13confidence at the same time. How do I, how do I be both?
- 11:17I can have fear and I can be confident.
- 11:20And I want to offer you guys join us inside the shift.
- 11:23This is the work that we're doing.
- 11:26Give yourself permission to play out confidently.
- 11:29Give yourself permission to play out big.
- 11:32Go all the way. Be overly confident.
- 11:35Let yourself be who you know that you're meant to be.
