Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Heck, why can't I win the New York City Marathon?
- 0:02Speaker 1: You know, why can't I metal at the Olympics or whatever?
- 0:04Speaker 1: So I feel like just a big confidence swing for sure.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I just don't have any doubts in myself.
- 0:25Speaker 2: What's going on? Emily Avadi? Here you are listening to
- 0:29Speaker 2: episode three hundred and twenty five of Hurdle, a wellness
- 0:32Speaker 2: focused podcast where I talk to inspirational people about everything
- 0:36Speaker 2: from their highest highs and toughest moments to essential tips
- 0:39Speaker 2: on how to live a healthier, happier, more motivated life.
- 0:43Speaker 2: We all go through our fair share of hurdles. My
- 0:46Speaker 2: goal through these discussions is to empower you to better
- 0:49Speaker 2: navigate yours and move with intention so that you can
- 0:52Speaker 2: stride towards your own big potential and of course, have
- 0:56Speaker 2: some fun along the way. I am elated to bring
- 1:01Speaker 2: you my conversation today with Dakota Lynn Worm her new
- 1:05Speaker 2: married name Dakota Payne. She actually got married last weekend
- 1:11Speaker 2: and just yesterday ran the New York City Marathon. We
- 1:16Speaker 2: had the opportunity to catch up while she was in
- 1:19Speaker 2: New York, and I was so stoked to have it.
- 1:22Speaker 2: She has been on the show before, I'm gonna link
- 1:24Speaker 2: that episode in the show notes to talk about her
- 1:27Speaker 2: best practice tips for new runners, but this is her
- 1:32Speaker 2: dedicated episode. We get into all of the goodness, from
- 1:35Speaker 2: how she got into running after a childhood stint playing hockey,
- 1:43Speaker 2: the important person that motivated her to give running a try,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and what the journey's been like as she's had her
- 1:50Speaker 2: quote unquote running glow up. She talks to me about
- 1:53Speaker 2: what it's like to be a big name in the
- 1:56Speaker 2: sport now, how she was able to step away from
- 1:59Speaker 2: her other job as a paralegal, and we also talk
- 2:03Speaker 2: a lot about what her experience was like at the Olympics,
- 2:07Speaker 2: sharing the highs, the lows, and everything in between from
- 2:11Speaker 2: one of the most special races of her life. She
- 2:15Speaker 2: also shares all about her recent wedding, what it feels
- 2:18Speaker 2: like to be a missus, and what I most appreciate
- 2:22Speaker 2: about this conversation is Dakota's sense of self belief. She
- 2:27Speaker 2: is so tenacious and so firm in her own potential,
- 2:32Speaker 2: truly believing that there is no limit to what she
- 2:35Speaker 2: can do, and so we dive into that. She gives
- 2:38Speaker 2: me her insights as to how anyone can really be
- 2:41Speaker 2: their own biggest type man and offers up the tools
- 2:44Speaker 2: and the tricks that she uses when self doubt creeps in,
- 2:48Speaker 2: which I think is a really important note right that
- 2:50Speaker 2: each of us, no matter how much we believe in
- 2:53Speaker 2: our own potential, we're all going to have intrusive thoughts.
- 2:56Speaker 2: But it's how you react to those thoughts that makes
- 2:59Speaker 2: all the difference, and that is something that we dive into.
- 3:02Speaker 2: She also shares some really beautiful sentiments about how she's
- 3:06Speaker 2: handled grief since the passing of her mom in twenty twenty,
- 3:09Speaker 2: knowing that there are going to be some smaller flowing
- 3:13Speaker 2: waves that feel difficult and some big crashes, but she
- 3:16Speaker 2: is equipped to handle all of it. A huge thank
- 3:20Speaker 2: you to her sponsor at Puma for connecting us. I
- 3:23Speaker 2: could not have been more grateful to be able to
- 3:24Speaker 2: step into the most stunning studio at their office space.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And it goes without saying that, no matter what happened
- 3:30Speaker 2: yesterday at the marathon, another hurdle conquered, I can promise
- 3:35Speaker 2: you a recap coming very shortly. With that, make sure
- 3:39Speaker 2: you are following along with Hurdle over on the socials
- 3:42Speaker 2: It's at Hurdle Podcast and over at Emily a body
- 3:46Speaker 2: with that. Let's get to it. Let's get to hurdling.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Today.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I am sitting down with Dakota Pain otherwise previously known
- 4:02Speaker 2: as formally known as It's like your rapper name, Yes,
- 4:05Speaker 2: formerly known as Lynn Worm.
- 4:07Speaker 3: How are we doing today?
- 4:08Speaker 1: I am good here in New York City. It's a
- 4:11Speaker 1: pretty nice day out. It's so warm here.
- 4:13Speaker 2: It's warm today, but thankfully it will not be warm
- 4:16Speaker 2: on Sunday totally, which the weather for Sunday. I think
- 4:20Speaker 2: we're close enough now that it's not like a jinx moment,
- 4:22Speaker 2: like it's not going to change.
- 4:24Speaker 3: It's really great marathon and weather.
- 4:25Speaker 1: It's kind of perfect. Honestly, I'm really excited for it.
- 4:28Speaker 2: You know, the last time I saw you, we were
- 4:31Speaker 2: in Paris, very different also very different weather and a
- 4:35Speaker 2: very different course. And I remember something that really stuck
- 4:39Speaker 2: with me was that you said I want to go
- 4:42Speaker 2: out and pull a Coal Hawker. So, for those that
- 4:45Speaker 2: may not know, coal Hawker surged in his race in
- 4:48Speaker 2: the Olympics out of nowhere, came in first. Now, you
- 4:52Speaker 2: didn't win the gold in the Olympics, but I kind
- 4:56Speaker 2: of would argue that a bit of you pulled a
- 4:59Speaker 2: coal Hawker. Can you talk to us a little bit
- 5:01Speaker 2: about your Olympic experience.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Yeah, totally, I am assuming you're talking about Oh by Versall,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I kind of pulled a jah.
- 5:07Speaker 2: You just you know, it's your racing was so impressive
- 5:12Speaker 2: and watching you out there, everyone that was watching on
- 5:16Speaker 2: their phones and the bars that I was at, they
- 5:19Speaker 2: were all cheering and they were like, this woman is
- 5:22Speaker 2: crushing it like you were crushing it out there, and
- 5:26Speaker 2: to see you just so strong with all of these
- 5:29Speaker 2: other runners and paving your own way, I was like,
- 5:32Speaker 2: whether or not you platform and do this gold. You
- 5:37Speaker 2: showed us something really stellar that day. Yeah, oh, I
- 5:39Speaker 2: appreciate that.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I loved my Olympic experience, which I'm really grateful for
- 5:43Speaker 1: because I know, you know, sometimes people go there to
- 5:45Speaker 1: their first Olympic experience and they don't have the day
- 5:47Speaker 1: they were hoping for. And of course I would have
- 5:50Speaker 1: loved to be tenth or first or whatever, you know,
- 5:53Speaker 1: but I all in all loved the experience. I mean,
- 5:57Speaker 1: the first fifteen k was really hectic and crazy, and
- 6:00Speaker 1: then I really lost contact with the leaders for I
- 6:05Speaker 1: don't know, maybe in a good five to ten k
- 6:07Speaker 1: after that, when we were climbing like the really long
- 6:10Speaker 1: gradual hill. But during the time I had lost them,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and then I found Emily for a little bit, and
- 6:15Speaker 1: then eventually.
- 6:16Speaker 4: I caught back up.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Because the way I race is very consistent, like whatever
- 6:20Speaker 1: I'm running at mile one is probably what I'm running
- 6:23Speaker 1: at mile twenty six.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Like I like to just stay even keeled.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I don't do the surging, I don't do the like
- 6:29Speaker 1: progressive type racing, I guess, And I mean.
- 6:32Speaker 4: The leaders were just ebbing and flowing. They were.
- 6:36Speaker 1: At one point they went past me and I was like,
- 6:38Speaker 1: is this like the last four hundred meters? Like they
- 6:40Speaker 1: were sprinting past me and it was crazy. So eventually
- 6:44Speaker 1: caught back up to them out by Versailles, and when
- 6:46Speaker 1: I took that turn, I don't know what happened.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Like I've watched the feed, I've went back in my memory.
- 6:52Speaker 1: It literally feels like I took a short cut because
- 6:54Speaker 1: Alson is like in a snap, I'm leading in like
- 6:57Speaker 1: pretty aggressively. I'm not just like at the front of
- 6:59Speaker 1: the pack. I've got like a gap on them. I
- 7:02Speaker 1: literally looked left and right and I was like, where
- 7:04Speaker 1: did everybody go? Like what just happened? But I was
- 7:06Speaker 1: just running consistent and they were kind of doing that
- 7:08Speaker 1: ebb and flow and fart like type racing, I guess.
- 7:11Speaker 4: So, yeah, it was. It was awesome and to you know,
- 7:16Speaker 4: be top twelve is pretty pretty great. I'm all in all,
- 7:19Speaker 4: I'm happy with it.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Sure, the farther I get away from it, the happier
- 7:22Speaker 4: I am, for sure.
- 7:23Speaker 2: And that's understandable, that approach, right because right in the
- 7:26Speaker 2: think of it, right after, there are so many feelings,
- 7:28Speaker 2: there's so much processing to do totally. So to have
- 7:31Speaker 2: this opportunity now to be a bit more removed. Yeah,
- 7:34Speaker 2: and look at the fact twelfth fastest marathon or of
- 7:39Speaker 2: the best of the best, right, that's outrageous.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And it was a great field too, So it's not like,
- 7:45Speaker 1: you know, it's not like I came to a low
- 7:47Speaker 1: key race in place twelfth. It was a really awesome
- 7:50Speaker 1: field and I'm really proud of how I put my
- 7:52Speaker 1: nose in it.
- 7:53Speaker 2: There is so much for us to talk about today,
- 7:55Speaker 2: but I have to say and again like I'm sitting
- 7:57Speaker 2: here with chills because when I think about what you
- 8:01Speaker 2: did in Paris, and then I think about New York
- 8:04Speaker 2: and I think about the weather, I walked in today
- 8:06Speaker 2: and I was like, I'm about to sit down with
- 8:08Speaker 2: the woman who could win the New York City Marathon.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Do you feel that way?
- 8:11Speaker 4: I do. I'm gonna I'm getting chills now.
- 8:14Speaker 1: It was like maybe a month ago, I had like
- 8:16Speaker 1: a really good workout and I very humbly and almost
- 8:20Speaker 1: embarrassingly said to Montana, my now husband, I was like,
- 8:24Speaker 1: I think I think I could win, Like, I like,
- 8:27Speaker 1: there's a chance. At New York. You just never know
- 8:29Speaker 1: what's gonna happen. It's anybody's day because it's so it's
- 8:33Speaker 1: just typically race championship style, so you just don't. I mean,
- 8:36Speaker 1: look at Chilean a few years ago and he was like,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you know, it's weird. I've been having that feeling too,
- 8:41Speaker 1: like you could win. So I just keep I have
- 8:44Speaker 1: these moments where I'm like, it could be me?
- 8:46Speaker 4: Why not me?
- 8:47Speaker 1: You know? And I think that's my mentality always is.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Like why not me? Why why can't it be me?
- 8:54Speaker 1: Even if I'm not technically you know, ranked in number
- 8:57Speaker 1: one or you know, I don't go into the trials
- 8:59Speaker 1: be being a top dog.
- 9:01Speaker 4: I don't know. I've always believed that I can still
- 9:03Speaker 4: do crazy things.
- 9:04Speaker 2: That concept of I've always believed I could do crazy
- 9:07Speaker 2: things truly always. Or is this something that as you've
- 9:11Speaker 2: progressed in your professional career you feel more confident saying
- 9:16Speaker 2: I've got this, I can stand on my own two feet.
- 9:18Speaker 1: No, I think it's been I mean, my parents just
- 9:20Speaker 1: really ingrained it in me. When I was young, I
- 9:22Speaker 1: played hockey and they didn't have a women's professionally at
- 9:25Speaker 1: that time. So growing up, if somebody asked me what
- 9:27Speaker 1: I wanted to do, I very sincerely would say, oh,
- 9:29Speaker 1: I'm going to be a professional hockey player. I'll play
- 9:32Speaker 1: for the Minnesota Wild like I'll play with the men,
- 9:35Speaker 1: like I've always had that, Like wait, why not me?
- 9:37Speaker 1: Why can't I be the first girl to play hockey?
- 9:39Speaker 4: Or whatever?
- 9:40Speaker 2: How would you recommend or suggest that's someone else channel
- 9:44Speaker 2: that really special level of self belief, because it's not
- 9:48Speaker 2: easy for many people to stand on their two feet
- 9:51Speaker 2: like that, to say I've got this, to say, I'm
- 9:54Speaker 2: going to dream really big and what's the worst that
- 9:56Speaker 2: could happen?
- 9:57Speaker 3: You know?
- 9:57Speaker 1: I think I'd love to say like, oh, I'm just
- 10:00Speaker 1: so confident and I've got all this belief in myself.
- 10:03Speaker 1: But I think the biggest thing is being surrounded by
- 10:05Speaker 1: people who are willing to put you on your two feet.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Both my parents have always been so adamant that I
- 10:12Speaker 1: could do anything, so like, I don't know, I just
- 10:15Speaker 1: never knew Noah was an answer. And then just you know,
- 10:18Speaker 1: my friends and now my husband there, they just believe
- 10:21Speaker 1: I can do anything. So when I whisper these crazy dreams,
- 10:25Speaker 1: they're like.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Yeah, you can do that. My coach is another great example.
- 10:28Speaker 1: So I think just surrounding yourself with the right people
- 10:30Speaker 1: is like the first big step.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, surrounding yourself with the right people. You said her
- 10:34Speaker 2: name before, Shelaine. Have you talked to her at all?
- 10:37Speaker 1: I haven't, I mean, not about New York or anything,
- 10:40Speaker 1: but yeah, I mean I was sitting on my couch.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I can still pitch her when she kind of took
- 10:44Speaker 1: the last fourner meters and I was like, oh my gosh,
- 10:47Speaker 1: an American's gonna win New York.
- 10:49Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, this episode's coming out on Monday, and
- 10:51Speaker 2: I'm sitting down with Slaine on Saturday tomorrow morning at
- 10:54Speaker 2: the Expo at ten, so.
- 10:56Speaker 4: We'll tell her.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I said, Hi, I'm channeling now, I'm channeling my inner
- 10:58Speaker 1: Shelaine perfect.
- 11:00Speaker 3: We love it and you.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I hope you also get to yell expletives as you
- 11:03Speaker 2: cross as you cross the finish and maybe Puma will.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Make a T shirt.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Yeah, that'd be awesome.
- 11:08Speaker 2: You also said you're now husband, so before we continue
- 11:11Speaker 2: so many other things, congrats, Yeah, thank you. I listened
- 11:15Speaker 2: to your conversation with Lindsey and it was funny because
- 11:18Speaker 2: you said to her, you know, I might whenever we
- 11:21Speaker 2: get married, it won't be super big. I don't want
- 11:23Speaker 2: to say we'll elope, but it will be kind of small.
- 11:26Speaker 2: And then literally last weekend, Yes, you did the damn thing. Yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 2: tell us about it.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:31Speaker 1: So, once we got engaged, we did the you know,
- 11:34Speaker 1: normal thing of like, okay, what are we going to do?
- 11:36Speaker 1: We start looking at venues, we started putting together guest list,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and we were both we looked at each other and
- 11:40Speaker 1: we're like, it's overwhelming, it's too much. We both have
- 11:44Speaker 1: huge families, big rand groups, where like this would be
- 11:46Speaker 1: like a five hundred person wedding if we went and
- 11:49Speaker 1: did it all and so, and that just isn't like
- 11:52Speaker 1: meaningful for either of us.
- 11:53Speaker 4: I guess like we would have a good time no
- 11:55Speaker 4: matter what you do.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Everybody enjoys their wedding, but we're both pretty introverted and
- 11:59Speaker 1: hate the center of attention also, so we thought, let's
- 12:02Speaker 1: just do something really special with just our most immediate family.
- 12:06Speaker 1: And so we literally planned it all in a month.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I'm not going to say we, because I did have
- 12:11Speaker 1: a wedding planner who that's what she does. She puts
- 12:13Speaker 1: together like micro weddings or elopements.
- 12:15Speaker 3: However, you want my micro weddings.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like a micro wedding.
- 12:18Speaker 3: May got how trendy of you?
- 12:19Speaker 4: Yes, so trendy. And so she did it all. I
- 12:22Speaker 4: just had to find a dress, which was super easy,
- 12:23Speaker 4: and get my nails done.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Those were the two. Those were my tasks and I
- 12:27Speaker 1: could handle those before a marathon.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Oh, I was going to say, now you had your
- 12:30Speaker 2: wedding nails, or now your marathon nails.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I know, I get my nails done before marathon anyway,
- 12:34Speaker 1: So I was like, oh, it's a two for one.
- 12:36Speaker 1: I get to save a little you know, I get
- 12:37Speaker 1: to say fifty bucks or whatever.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I get to save fifty bucks. I would be remiss
- 12:41Speaker 2: if you mentioned money. So now I'm going to pivot
- 12:43Speaker 2: us to the fact that you just stepped away from
- 12:45Speaker 2: your job as a pairalegal.
- 12:47Speaker 4: I did.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Can you talk to us a little bit about how
- 12:50Speaker 2: you first started working as a paralegal, because I think
- 12:53Speaker 2: that's super interesting, and then we'll get into this this
- 12:55Speaker 2: decision that you've made.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Yeah, So the owners of the law firm and it's Brooks,
- 13:00Speaker 1: Cameron and Hips. Brooks is like the founder of the company,
- 13:04Speaker 1: and he and his wife actually have supported our team,
- 13:06Speaker 1: Minnesota Distance Deleete for a long time. They're both runners.
- 13:10Speaker 1: They are big in the running community. And just through
- 13:14Speaker 1: like happenstance, I got one of my teammates a job
- 13:17Speaker 1: at the firm and he worked there for like six
- 13:20Speaker 1: months and just really enjoyed it. And then this paralegal
- 13:22Speaker 1: position came open and he was like, Dakota, you would
- 13:26Speaker 1: actually be really good at this because you're very type
- 13:29Speaker 1: A like I like to follow an agenda, I have
- 13:32Speaker 1: a planner. I like to cross things off, and that's
- 13:34Speaker 1: what a paralegal does is like keep other people on track.
- 13:37Speaker 1: So I went in for the interview, and you know,
- 13:42Speaker 1: I was like, Yeah, this is gonna be a great
- 13:44Speaker 1: job for me. In the Brooks Edward Brooks was like, well,
- 13:47Speaker 1: what's gonna happen when you make the paras Olympics.
- 13:49Speaker 4: And this was in like twenty twenty two, twenty twenty one.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Back when I wasn't really like a big name, and
- 13:55Speaker 1: I like, you know, I really wanted to believe I
- 13:58Speaker 1: could make that team. But I laughed and I was
- 14:00Speaker 1: it's like, oh, you know, like I don't think we
- 14:01Speaker 1: really have to worry about that.
- 14:04Speaker 4: But yeah, I had a really great.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Like two years with them, and then once I made
- 14:08Speaker 1: the team, they were very gracious to say, like, do
- 14:11Speaker 1: you want to take a leave of absence? And I
- 14:13Speaker 1: did take that because it was it was hectic for sure,
- 14:15Speaker 1: and I didn't have forty hours a week to put
- 14:18Speaker 1: towards the job. So for a little bit, I worked
- 14:19Speaker 1: like twenty hours and then I was just I was overwhelmed.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I wanted to go to Paris knowing that I had
- 14:24Speaker 1: done my very best to get there and like had
- 14:29Speaker 1: given it my all in those.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Last six months basically.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And then when the Olympics went pretty good, and I
- 14:35Speaker 1: was like, you know, it was time to like have
- 14:38Speaker 1: the conversation about like when I would be coming back
- 14:41Speaker 1: to work or if I would be coming back to work.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I sat down with Montana and I, you know, just
- 14:46Speaker 1: kind of made the pros and cons because I really
- 14:47Speaker 1: did love my job. I loved having something outside of
- 14:50Speaker 1: running that was like, you know, whether my workout goes
- 14:53Speaker 1: really well or really bad. I got to get you know,
- 14:55Speaker 1: I got to clock in and I've got to do
- 14:57Speaker 1: this other thing to take my mind off of running.
- 15:00Speaker 1: But we sat down and we're like, I just don't
- 15:02Speaker 1: have forty hours in a week anymore to.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Put towards a different job.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I'm taking care of my body a lot better than
- 15:08Speaker 1: I ever had, which is nice.
- 15:10Speaker 4: And yeah, I just I'm doing way more interviews, way
- 15:13Speaker 4: more you know, podcasts.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Stuff like this, which I really really enjoy and I
- 15:16Speaker 1: want to be able to soak up this time. When
- 15:19Speaker 1: I get to do this, I can always go back.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I we left on great terms, so I think I
- 15:23Speaker 1: could always take my position back if I ever wanted to.
- 15:27Speaker 4: But for now, I'm living the pro runner.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Life, living the pro runner life.
- 15:30Speaker 2: And I mean I do follow you on Strava, but
- 15:34Speaker 2: I cannot recall in your peak weeks, like what kind
- 15:37Speaker 2: of mileage were you running? I was really one thirty okay,
- 15:40Speaker 2: And then in the build up for New York. What
- 15:42Speaker 2: kind of what was it the kind of the same
- 15:44Speaker 2: or pretty similar.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I only got up to one thirty four one week,
- 15:47Speaker 1: but I was like, I think like five one thirty,
- 15:50Speaker 1: which was basically like me going from you know, like
- 15:53Speaker 1: no mileage back into it because we didn't have a
- 15:56Speaker 1: lot of time after the Olympics.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Yeah, so to think about getting that time back, knowing
- 16:00Speaker 2: that time is literally our most valuable resource, right Yeah,
- 16:04Speaker 2: So getting that time and then getting that forty hours
- 16:07Speaker 2: from the work back to your life because you need balance,
- 16:10Speaker 2: right totally. I can't even imagine putting in the time
- 16:13Speaker 2: to run one hundred and thirty miles and then maintain
- 16:16Speaker 2: a full time job.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I don't like when I look back, it's one of
- 16:19Speaker 1: those things you don't know how you're doing it, Like
- 16:21Speaker 1: you're just when you're in the storm, you're just putting
- 16:24Speaker 1: one foot in front of the other and you're just
- 16:25Speaker 1: getting it done. But when I look back, I'm like how.
- 16:27Speaker 1: And I was just so much more beat up after
- 16:29Speaker 1: the Olympics. I just spent a lot of time in
- 16:31Speaker 1: PTE Cairo acupuncture, So I just wouldn't have worked out,
- 16:35Speaker 1: I don't think.
- 16:36Speaker 2: And when you say you were more beat up after
- 16:38Speaker 2: the Olympics. What did that look like for you?
- 16:40Speaker 1: So if you watch the Olympics, you'll recall there was
- 16:43Speaker 1: like this insane downhill, insane like dangerously downhill is how
- 16:48Speaker 1: I called it. And I I just in general have
- 16:51Speaker 1: some SI just dysfunction that I deal with generally. In
- 16:55Speaker 1: all that downhill just compounded into my ass side joint,
- 16:58Speaker 1: so it was super locked up for a long time time.
- 17:00Speaker 1: So yeah, we were just working on getting that mobile
- 17:03Speaker 1: again because that.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Baby was like stuck.
- 17:06Speaker 1: She was she put all I put all my pressure
- 17:09Speaker 1: back there, so she was not happy, which then like
- 17:11Speaker 1: led to some Achilles issues, which I also deal with.
- 17:14Speaker 1: But those things aren't normally something that like get super
- 17:18Speaker 1: aggravated after a marathon, but they were after Paris.
- 17:20Speaker 2: I appreciate the discussion of a pro con list for
- 17:26Speaker 2: making the decision on what you wanted to do about
- 17:29Speaker 2: the job.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Is that an approach you take in other areas of
- 17:32Speaker 3: your life?
- 17:32Speaker 1: I'm I think I do pro con lists for everything.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Do I go to the grocery store today?
- 17:37Speaker 4: What are the pros?
- 17:38Speaker 3: What are the kind?
- 17:40Speaker 4: Yeah? No, I feel like I'm pretty a logical thinker for.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Ueah, Yeah, and I mean, I remember I made a
- 17:47Speaker 2: pro con list when I was deciding to leave one
- 17:49Speaker 2: of my first jobs out of college. I was working
- 17:52Speaker 2: as a journalist and an editor for a digital property
- 17:56Speaker 2: where I was writing and editing content about a lot
- 17:59Speaker 2: of different topics news, entertainment, health, et cetera. And then
- 18:03Speaker 2: I was potentially shifting into a role as an editor
- 18:08Speaker 2: for a publication where it was just health and wellness.
- 18:10Speaker 2: And I was so nervous, right, I was so nervous
- 18:12Speaker 2: and thinking to myself, is it going to be boring?
- 18:14Speaker 2: Am I going to get tired of this? Am I
- 18:16Speaker 2: limiting myself by sticking to one thing? Ultimately I made
- 18:19Speaker 2: the choice to make the leap, and then look here
- 18:21Speaker 2: we are now.
- 18:22Speaker 3: But the pro con list is a helpful tool.
- 18:25Speaker 1: It really is, because then you have it all laid
- 18:27Speaker 1: out and you can reference back to it. Because it's
- 18:31Speaker 1: not like I made that decision in an hour or anything.
- 18:33Speaker 1: It took me probably a week to really go back
- 18:35Speaker 1: and forth, and I just kept looking back and just
- 18:38Speaker 1: trying to relate to what felt more important on that
- 18:40Speaker 1: list the pros or the cons, and the cons of
- 18:43Speaker 1: leaving were really that I just I loved my job,
- 18:46Speaker 1: and that was you know, that was it.
- 18:48Speaker 4: It's not like I financially needed the job. It's not
- 18:51Speaker 4: like it. You know, it's important for my lifelong dream
- 18:55Speaker 4: of running. If anything, it's taking away from that.
- 18:57Speaker 1: So I mean, it was only just me having to
- 18:59Speaker 1: get over or the fact that I loved my coworkers
- 19:01Speaker 1: and I love the position.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and I appreciate you saying it wasn't like I
- 19:05Speaker 2: needed the money. But what a job like that does
- 19:07Speaker 2: provide is a bit of stability totally.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, because I don't have I never had to
- 19:11Speaker 4: go into a.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Race and be like, okay, I have to place X,
- 19:15Speaker 1: or like I said before, it was nice to be like, Okay,
- 19:18Speaker 1: I had a really bad workout this morning, but I
- 19:20Speaker 1: got to jump on a call, you know, like and
- 19:21Speaker 1: it just it helps you flush away those you know,
- 19:24Speaker 1: those bad workouts or even the good workouts sometimes so
- 19:26Speaker 1: you don't get on like an ego high or whatever,
- 19:28Speaker 1: and it just creates.
- 19:30Speaker 4: I don't know, normalcy in your life.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it just takes away, like it just reminds you
- 19:34Speaker 1: running is not everything.
- 19:36Speaker 2: So now that you've removed that, what's the verdict, How
- 19:39Speaker 2: are you feeling so far?
- 19:41Speaker 4: Really good? I am happy with the decision. I never
- 19:44Speaker 4: could have.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I don't.
- 19:45Speaker 4: I just never could have done it well. I could have,
- 19:47Speaker 4: I would have. I just wouldn't be sitting here as
- 19:49Speaker 4: fit as I am.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I think it feels really good to be all in
- 19:52Speaker 1: on running, and I think what is super helpful for
- 19:55Speaker 1: me is.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Having a home life that's pretty normal Montana.
- 19:59Speaker 1: My husband is he runs with me, but he's not
- 20:01Speaker 1: a runner, So like our conversations when I'm home.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Aren't revolved around that.
- 20:06Speaker 1: He'll ask all the workout went, We'll have those types
- 20:08Speaker 1: of conversations, but I get so much more normalcy from
- 20:12Speaker 1: him because he's just like, I don't know, he's just
- 20:14Speaker 1: a regular guy kind of thing, you know.
- 20:16Speaker 4: So I get that normalcy from him, for sure.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 20:20Speaker 2: And I also really appreciate when you said the sentence
- 20:24Speaker 2: back when I wasn't a big name.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Oh yes, yeah.
- 20:29Speaker 2: I don't want to simply ask what's changed since you've
- 20:33Speaker 2: become a big name, because I feel like that's kind
- 20:35Speaker 2: of a generic question. Yeah, But more so I want
- 20:38Speaker 2: to ask, and what's changed about how you feel now
- 20:42Speaker 2: that you have more eyes? You're really dedicating your entire
- 20:48Speaker 2: being to this sport. How do you feel now that
- 20:51Speaker 2: you are this quote unquote big name.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I feel so much more confident. I mean I've always
- 20:57Speaker 1: had that kind of like I can do anything attitude,
- 21:00Speaker 1: But I get on a starting line and be like
- 21:02Speaker 1: look left and right and be like, oh maybe I
- 21:03Speaker 1: belong a rollback here, you know, But now I feel like, heck,
- 21:07Speaker 1: why can't I win the New York City Marathon? You know,
- 21:09Speaker 1: why can't I medal at the Olympics or whatever? So
- 21:12Speaker 1: I feel like just a big confidence swing for sure.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I almost I just don't have any doubts in myself.
- 21:20Speaker 3: That is.
- 21:21Speaker 2: So I'm just sitting here again with the goosebumps thinking
- 21:24Speaker 2: about how inspiring that is. And I also feel as
- 21:28Speaker 2: though it's important to point out that you can feel
- 21:32Speaker 2: as though you don't have any doubts in yourself, but
- 21:34Speaker 2: you can also experience anxiety or have a moment where
- 21:38Speaker 2: you're like, oh my god, am I going to do this?
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 21:40Speaker 4: What do you do to.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Combat those intrusive thoughts and let the positivity be the
- 21:46Speaker 2: prevailing vibe.
- 21:47Speaker 1: So I'm taking this from my coach one hundred percent.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I set an alarm for race day so it'll be
- 21:54Speaker 1: like an hour before race day. I'm not allowed to
- 21:56Speaker 1: have any negative thoughts, any anxiety. I'm not allowed to
- 21:59Speaker 1: be nervous until that alarm goes off on race day.
- 22:02Speaker 1: So when like last night, I was lying down and
- 22:04Speaker 1: I was like, oh, like, I'm running a marathon in
- 22:06Speaker 1: a couple of days, Like I'm a little anxious, I'm
- 22:09Speaker 1: you know, getting excited, and I'm like, oh, it's not
- 22:11Speaker 1: time yet, Like it's not time to be nervous. It's
- 22:14Speaker 1: just time to you know, think about Okay, tomorrow, I've
- 22:16Speaker 1: got a podcast tomorrow, I've got to get dinner.
- 22:19Speaker 4: With these people or whatever, you know.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Like I'm just taking it one day at a time,
- 22:22Speaker 1: and I'm just when those things come in my head
- 22:25Speaker 1: and say, it's not time yet, it's not time to
- 22:27Speaker 1: have those thoughts.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah, And you're setting a hard boundary for yourself, and
- 22:31Speaker 2: when you do that, you're less likely to reneg on
- 22:36Speaker 2: the contract that you've made with yourself. All right, Yeah,
- 22:38Speaker 2: you're like, this is how it is now. Yeah, Yeah,
- 22:40Speaker 2: we don't do that. That's just not how it is.
- 22:42Speaker 2: This is how we do it exactly. And it's so
- 22:44Speaker 2: empowering to hear that. And I also think really humanizing
- 22:47Speaker 2: that you can admit like, but I also do have
- 22:50Speaker 2: these moments where I don't feel so shiny and so
- 22:52Speaker 2: confident and so sufially like I'm not.
- 22:54Speaker 4: I'm a human for sure, you know.
- 22:56Speaker 1: And no matter what day of the week it is,
- 22:59Speaker 1: twenty six point two miles is a long way. I
- 23:01Speaker 1: know what's going to be painful. I know it's going
- 23:03Speaker 1: to be hard, but it's not time yet to worry
- 23:05Speaker 1: about that.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Yeah, now you are a Minnesota girly running with the
- 23:09Speaker 2: Minnesota distance lead.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you bet you there she is.
- 23:14Speaker 2: For those that aren't familiar with your experience running, I
- 23:17Speaker 2: do want to give a little bit more insight, especially
- 23:21Speaker 2: if they didn't listen to your previous episode, which I'm
- 23:22Speaker 2: going to link in the show notes. But I would
- 23:25Speaker 2: love to give a little bit more insight as to
- 23:27Speaker 2: how you first got started with running after your fun
- 23:30Speaker 2: experience with hockey. Yeah.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Yeah, So I went to a small Division two school.
- 23:36Speaker 1: It's called Northern State University. It's in the middle of Aberdeen,
- 23:40Speaker 1: South Dakota.
- 23:41Speaker 4: It was a walk on and just.
- 23:45Speaker 1: After like a year or so, one of my teammates
- 23:47Speaker 1: was having a lot of success and I was very
- 23:49Speaker 1: I don't want to say envious, because I like, I'm her,
- 23:52Speaker 1: she's my best friend. But I was very much like, oh, Sasha,
- 23:55Speaker 1: I can do that. I want to be able to
- 23:56Speaker 1: do that. So she kind of took me under her wing,
- 23:58Speaker 1: and you know, we stayed late after practice doing cores
- 24:01Speaker 1: and these extras, and I'd go on my easy runs
- 24:04Speaker 1: with her, and I tried to hang on to her
- 24:05Speaker 1: during workouts and she just really helped me get to
- 24:08Speaker 1: another level where I was qualifying for national meets.
- 24:12Speaker 4: I still wasn't doing that great. I mean, it's Division.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Two, so it's not as competitive as Division one, but
- 24:17Speaker 1: it's fairly competitive. But I wasn't getting like all Americans
- 24:20Speaker 1: or anything until my last year. And then when I
- 24:23Speaker 1: was getting close to graduating or had just graduated, my
- 24:26Speaker 1: college coach was like, you know, like what's next with running?
- 24:29Speaker 4: And I was like, I don't know.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Run a few five k's, ten k's and he's like,
- 24:33Speaker 1: I think you could qualify for the Olympic trials in
- 24:35Speaker 1: the marathon. And I was like, so this is like
- 24:38Speaker 1: probably like twenty seventeen, and I was like, I don't
- 24:40Speaker 1: even know what that means. Like I to this day,
- 24:43Speaker 1: I'm not what I would consider myself a running nerd.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I know what I have to know about other runners,
- 24:48Speaker 1: but like I knew about like you know, like care Gouger,
- 24:50Speaker 1: Dus Linden and Shlaane.
- 24:52Speaker 4: I knew these women, but I didn't really realize there's.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Also kind of like the subset of women who are
- 24:57Speaker 1: like sublite, who kind of do it part time and
- 25:00Speaker 1: can still qualify for the Olympic Trials. I didn't even
- 25:02Speaker 1: know how you qualified for the Olympic Trials. I had
- 25:06Speaker 1: no idea what like a world championship was or any
- 25:08Speaker 1: of those things. So he I literally went into his
- 25:11Speaker 1: office the next day with a pen and paper and
- 25:13Speaker 1: he said, tell me everything you need that I need
- 25:14Speaker 1: to know how do I qualify for the Olympic Trials?
- 25:17Speaker 1: And I probably spent an hour in there just drilling,
- 25:21Speaker 1: like getting all the information I needed. And he had
- 25:24Speaker 1: a connection with Minnesota Distance Elite through an old teammate
- 25:28Speaker 1: of his, and we reached out to the coach, Chris
- 25:30Speaker 1: Lundstrom he's my coach today, and basically begged him.
- 25:34Speaker 4: To take me on.
- 25:35Speaker 1: I wasn't, like, you know, I wasn't a CHRISA. Schweitzer
- 25:39Speaker 1: coming out of college who like had all these opportunities
- 25:41Speaker 1: at Parker Velby. I was very much nobody, so I
- 25:46Speaker 1: quote unquote like walked on to Minnesota Distance Aly. I
- 25:48Speaker 1: didn't get any of their like stipend or you know,
- 25:51Speaker 1: medical help or anything. Basically, Coach Londo was just coaching
- 25:55Speaker 1: me and I could show up to practice, so, you know,
- 25:57Speaker 1: just over time, obviously, I proved myself a little better
- 26:00Speaker 1: and better every year, and in twenty I don't know,
- 26:04Speaker 1: twenty nineteen, I think I signed with them officially and
- 26:07Speaker 1: became a part of the team.
- 26:09Speaker 3: It is so impressive to me that you had the.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Awareness to remove the ego and walk back in the
- 26:20Speaker 2: next day with the patent paper.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 26:22Speaker 2: That is something that I believe a lot of individuals
- 26:26Speaker 2: struggle with when they think something or they have a
- 26:31Speaker 2: inkling that maybe I should try this, but there is
- 26:34Speaker 2: so much unknown and you have to get past that
- 26:37Speaker 2: point where you're willing to say I don't know it
- 26:40Speaker 2: all and that's okay, yeah, right, because no one gets
- 26:43Speaker 2: to the top of the mountaintop on their own, right, right.
- 26:48Speaker 2: And after that conversation, you know, you then had a
- 26:51Speaker 2: new coach with Chris, and you had a team that
- 26:53Speaker 2: you worked with, and so many people, as you said before,
- 26:55Speaker 2: have helped you on your way to make you the
- 26:57Speaker 2: best that you can be. But it started with your
- 27:01Speaker 2: willingness to be like I don't know everything and that's okay.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think it kind of goes back to
- 27:06Speaker 1: that earlier conversation of like my college coach just believed
- 27:09Speaker 1: in me and said like, oh, I think you can
- 27:10Speaker 1: do this, which creates like that comfortable space to be like, okay,
- 27:13Speaker 1: so tell me more about it. And like I said,
- 27:15Speaker 1: I literally knew nothing and I tried to google it
- 27:18Speaker 1: and I'm like, this is so confusing. So just there
- 27:20Speaker 1: was just that comfortable space that I've walked in and
- 27:23Speaker 1: I felt okay to ask questions.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Taking a break to give some love to my sponsor
- 27:30Speaker 2: at Element.
- 27:31Speaker 3: Element helps anyone.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Stay hydrated without the sugar and other dodgy ingredients found
- 27:36Speaker 2: in popular.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Electrolyte and sport drinks.
- 27:40Speaker 2: We know that an electrolyte deficiency or imbalance can cause headaches, cramps, fatigue,
- 27:45Speaker 2: brain fog, and weakness. And let's be real busy ladies here,
- 27:49Speaker 2: we don't have time for that. That's where Element comes in.
- 27:53Speaker 2: It's a zero sugar electrolyte drink mix and sparkling electrolyte
- 27:57Speaker 2: water born from the growing body of research revealing that
- 28:00Speaker 2: optimal health outcomes occur at sodium levels two to three
- 28:03Speaker 2: times government recommendations.
- 28:06Speaker 3: I am a huge fan of Element.
- 28:08Speaker 2: It is what I brought with me to Staten Island
- 28:11Speaker 2: over the weekend, and it is what has fueled my
- 28:13Speaker 2: training and my journey to the starting line, and I
- 28:16Speaker 2: cannot imagine my day to day without it. They also
- 28:21Speaker 2: just re release their Element Chocolate Medley which includes chocolate mint,
- 28:25Speaker 2: chocolate Chi and chocolate raspberry.
- 28:27Speaker 3: I'm so amped.
- 28:29Speaker 2: I love to add a half a stick of chocolate
- 28:31Speaker 2: Mint to my morning coffee to make a mean mocha
- 28:34Speaker 2: or cozy up in the evenings with a chocolate Chi
- 28:37Speaker 2: mixed with hot water and a splash of cream chef's kiss.
- 28:42Speaker 2: It is delicious. Now you have to get some for yourself.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Head on over to drink Element dot com. That's drink

- 29:14Speaker 2: Aside from the relationships that have been so helpful for you,
- 29:18Speaker 2: what would you say the other pieces to the puzzle
- 29:21Speaker 2: are that have helped you really thrive. I would say
- 29:25Speaker 2: over the last few years within running, because we're in
- 29:28Speaker 2: a very different place now than when you and I
- 29:31Speaker 2: sat down before the Boston Marathon, which I think was
- 29:34Speaker 2: in either twenty twenty one or twenty twenty two.
- 29:36Speaker 4: You might have been twenty one.
- 29:38Speaker 3: Yeah, in twenty twenty one, yeah, yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 4: I think.
- 29:42Speaker 1: This is something that again I feel like my parents
- 29:45Speaker 1: ingrained in me, is I'm just a very hard worker.
- 29:46Speaker 4: Like no matter if I was doing a paralegal job.
- 29:49Speaker 1: If I am, if I would have went out of
- 29:51Speaker 1: college and taught like my how I got a degree in,
- 29:54Speaker 1: I would be doing anything I could to like the very.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Best of my ability.
- 29:58Speaker 1: It doesn't matter if if I'm vacuuming the house or
- 30:01Speaker 1: going out for a long run, Like, I want to
- 30:03Speaker 1: do everything really well. And I don't know, I just
- 30:06Speaker 1: have like a really a really strong work ethic that
- 30:08Speaker 1: I saw in both my parents my grandparents, and I
- 30:11Speaker 1: think that combination of having a good support system and
- 30:14Speaker 1: believing in myself plus being able to back it.
- 30:17Speaker 4: Up with work helps.
- 30:20Speaker 2: I'm still sitting here and I'm like, Okay, you can
- 30:22Speaker 2: be a hard worker but still not be at the
- 30:24Speaker 2: top of your sport, right, Like, you can try really hard,
- 30:27Speaker 2: so there's got to be another level too. It's like that, yes, okay,
- 30:31Speaker 2: we have ingredient one, ingredient two, but if you don't
- 30:33Speaker 2: put the yeast in the pizza dough, it's not going
- 30:36Speaker 2: to be right.
- 30:36Speaker 1: I think the yeast in the pizza dough is probably delusion.
- 30:40Speaker 1: I think it might have been Daz you said at first,
- 30:43Speaker 1: But just being like stupid enough to believe in yourself
- 30:46Speaker 1: is really like the biggest piece of the puzzle, because
- 30:48Speaker 1: if you have any doubts, if you at all are
- 30:52Speaker 1: saying like, oh, this might not work out, like it's
- 30:55Speaker 1: not gonna you know, this is a crazy sport where
- 30:58Speaker 1: only a few people get to the top.
- 31:01Speaker 4: And I don't know, I think you have to just
- 31:03Speaker 4: kind of be de Lulu about it.
- 31:05Speaker 2: I think when you're Delulu also, like the first time
- 31:08Speaker 2: that you're Delulu and you see it pay off, you're like,
- 31:11Speaker 2: holy shit, why haven't I been approaching.
- 31:13Speaker 3: Everything this way?
- 31:14Speaker 4: Totally?
- 31:15Speaker 2: Right?
- 31:15Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 31:15Speaker 2: And so I mean I feel the exact same way
- 31:18Speaker 2: about this weekend, despite the fact that you and I
- 31:20Speaker 2: will be running very different races. But you know, I
- 31:23Speaker 2: came into a training cycle without any expectation, like literally
- 31:27Speaker 2: just excited for the opportunity to run twenty six point
- 31:30Speaker 2: two miles around my favorite place. Yeah, and then like
- 31:33Speaker 2: things just started working out in a really fun way,
- 31:35Speaker 2: and it's like, oh, well, why not me to your
- 31:38Speaker 2: point before? Why not go out there and be a
- 31:40Speaker 2: little delusional. I think it's great. I think it's so great.
- 31:43Speaker 2: And speaking of being a little delusional, you like to
- 31:46Speaker 2: engage a lot with the crowd when you're running, like
- 31:48Speaker 2: you're dialed into what you're doing in your body, but
- 31:51Speaker 2: you're also very aware. And I know this because of
- 31:55Speaker 2: your mission to find the sweet little human that was
- 31:59Speaker 2: running alongside you the paras Olympics, who you ran with
- 32:01Speaker 2: in New York recently. Yes, yeah, can you tell us
- 32:05Speaker 2: how that part happened that you guys were united here?
- 32:08Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
- 32:09Speaker 1: So for those of you who don't know the story
- 32:11Speaker 1: at thirty five k, because everything's in kilometers and Europe,
- 32:15Speaker 1: a little boy ran alongside of me in the marathon
- 32:19Speaker 1: when I was kind of going through a hard time
- 32:21Speaker 1: mentally and when I say, like, you didn't just run
- 32:23Speaker 1: alongside me for like a couple of seconds, it felt
- 32:25Speaker 1: like minutes. Like this guy he was like ten years
- 32:28Speaker 1: he's ten years old. His name is Jackson, and he
- 32:30Speaker 1: was crushing it.
- 32:31Speaker 4: I'm like, who is this kid?
- 32:32Speaker 1: Like somebody signed him to a contract? Now, Puma, get
- 32:35Speaker 1: on it. And I just had mentioned it in an
- 32:39Speaker 1: interview post marathon, I think with Runners World, and they
- 32:42Speaker 1: put it out there and eventually I actually had a
- 32:45Speaker 1: few people DM me and be like, that's my kid,
- 32:47Speaker 1: that's my kid. And you know, once I had a
- 32:49Speaker 1: few us a little bit like skeptical because I'm like, oh,
- 32:52Speaker 1: anybody's gonna you.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Know, can't be everybody's Yeah, it can't.
- 32:55Speaker 4: Be everybody's kid.
- 32:55Speaker 1: But of course people want, you know, their kid to
- 32:57Speaker 1: be in the limelight a little bit. So I finally
- 33:00Speaker 1: this his name is Terrence sent me a video of
- 33:03Speaker 1: Jackson running alongside me, and I knew immediately.
- 33:05Speaker 4: I saw the outfit. I knew the exact spot, So.
- 33:08Speaker 1: You know, I sent them some of my stuff because
- 33:10Speaker 1: I just felt so thankful for him, Like him being
- 33:13Speaker 1: right where he was was so important for me because
- 33:16Speaker 1: it really like kind of snapped me back, and his
- 33:18Speaker 1: cheers like actually were super helpful. And I think that's
- 33:22Speaker 1: really important for anybody cheering for a marathon, just know,
- 33:24Speaker 1: like you being out there is really important. That's why
- 33:27Speaker 1: I like to interact so much, Like twenty six point
- 33:29Speaker 1: two would be really.
- 33:30Speaker 4: Boring without all the crowds.
- 33:32Speaker 1: So anybody out there supporting is just like my superhero
- 33:36Speaker 1: for sure. But I've just been in contact with his
- 33:39Speaker 1: family since they live in New York, just forty five
- 33:42Speaker 1: minutes north of the city or so, so as it
- 33:45Speaker 1: was getting closer, he texted me and said that Jackson
- 33:49Speaker 1: was allowed to skip first period, which is Jim class,
- 33:53Speaker 1: on Wednesday, So instead of going to Jim, Jackson and
- 33:56Speaker 1: I ran a couple miles around the park and we had.
- 33:59Speaker 4: Some great conversation. He's an amazing kid.
- 34:02Speaker 1: I think we got to watch out for him in
- 34:03Speaker 1: twenty like thirty six or whatever whatever Olympics.
- 34:07Speaker 4: That'll be.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Oh my god, how special is that? What a core
- 34:10Speaker 3: memory for both of you?
- 34:12Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, he is.
- 34:13Speaker 1: He's the greatest little kid too, And yeah, I'm super
- 34:16Speaker 1: grateful for him.
- 34:17Speaker 2: I also don't recall, like is running a couple of
- 34:19Speaker 2: miles at ten normal thing to do.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. So he's like kind of an all
- 34:23Speaker 1: star little runner. He's in a run club, and I
- 34:26Speaker 1: don't know. I was like, I know, that's what I
- 34:31Speaker 1: was like, are you going to be tired for practice
- 34:33Speaker 1: the next day? Like when's your next race? Like I
- 34:35Speaker 1: was really worried about, like, oh, we're doing it for him.
- 34:37Speaker 1: But we just took it nice and easy and had,
- 34:39Speaker 1: you know, some good conversations.
- 34:41Speaker 3: Jackson, what an MVP.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Yes, that's so special to your point about it's so
- 34:46Speaker 2: helpful and important when people show up. I mean, we've
- 34:48Speaker 2: already reiterated the importance of your people showing up for
- 34:52Speaker 2: you when you're not on the race course. But I
- 34:55Speaker 2: do think that's a really great thing to highlight, is
- 34:58Speaker 2: that there is so much gratitude that people have for
- 35:02Speaker 2: the people that show up on the sidelines, right Really,
- 35:05Speaker 2: it wouldn't be the same without them. And so that's
- 35:09Speaker 2: always my biggest tip, or one of them, for sure,
- 35:12Speaker 2: to anyone who may be going out there for the
- 35:14Speaker 2: first time, whether you're running a five k or a
- 35:17Speaker 2: mile or a marathon, it's like, if you have people
- 35:21Speaker 2: that are coming out to support you, do your best.
- 35:23Speaker 3: To know literally exactly where.
- 35:25Speaker 4: They're going to be.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Absolutely and because you get like you get an energy
- 35:29Speaker 1: bowl like none other, No caffeine pill, no good, no
- 35:35Speaker 1: tail end. Whatever you're taking is going to give you
- 35:37Speaker 1: as much energy as seeing your loved ones out there.
- 35:39Speaker 1: And I don't know, I think it's really a magical moment.
- 35:43Speaker 1: And I don't know, like they're so proud of you
- 35:45Speaker 1: for what you You know, they're going to be proud
- 35:47Speaker 1: of no matter what your result is, but they're so
- 35:49Speaker 1: proud to see you out there, and I think it's awesome.
- 35:51Speaker 3: It's so awesome. You mentioned nutrition.
- 35:53Speaker 2: I do recall that you missed a bottle at the Olympics. Yes,
- 35:58Speaker 2: and you spoke about how that really got in your
- 36:01Speaker 2: head for a moment. Yes, Yeah, How did you let
- 36:04Speaker 2: it go?
- 36:05Speaker 1: Well, first of all, when you're talking about the expletive
- 36:08Speaker 1: of Slane plan again, the camera on me that have
- 36:11Speaker 1: to bleep me out completely, I was not super I'm
- 36:15Speaker 1: not super proud of how I like handled that for
- 36:17Speaker 1: a few minutes within myself though, you know, because for
- 36:20Speaker 1: a while I was like well, and then of course
- 36:22Speaker 1: my calf started to cramp not long after, and I
- 36:24Speaker 1: was like, well, it's because I didn't get my electrolytes,
- 36:26Speaker 1: and you know, you just start to spiralf and so
- 36:30Speaker 1: I I guess you just just figure it out. You know,
- 36:33Speaker 1: you start to think about, Okay, well my next bottle,
- 36:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna instead of just drinking half, I'll drink three
- 36:38Speaker 1: quarters of it, or I'll grab a water bottle next
- 36:41Speaker 1: time I can see it. And you just gotta you
- 36:44Speaker 1: gotta pull yourself out and know that especially for a marathon,
- 36:47Speaker 1: less so for those shorter races when you know it
- 36:50Speaker 1: doesn't really matter what your nutrition is.
- 36:52Speaker 4: That stuff.
- 36:53Speaker 1: We we only get to do a marathon every now
- 36:55Speaker 1: and again, like two three times a year, pretty max.
- 36:59Speaker 4: You know, So you got to.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Be able to take yourself out of those dark situations
- 37:03Speaker 1: because you don't get a lot of opportunities to get
- 37:05Speaker 1: them right.
- 37:06Speaker 3: What kind of mental fitness do you do?
- 37:09Speaker 4: You know, I don't do anything on you know, I guess,
- 37:13Speaker 4: like on purpose or anything.
- 37:14Speaker 1: But every time I go out for a run, I'm
- 37:17Speaker 1: usually cycling through moments in a marathon, I think about
- 37:21Speaker 1: hard times that I had in other marathons. I think
- 37:24Speaker 1: about potential hard times I'll have in New York, for example,
- 37:27Speaker 1: going up the quiet bridges waiting for like hell and
- 37:30Speaker 1: Obiri to surge those moments like the things that are
- 37:33Speaker 1: going to be really hard, and I figure out how
- 37:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna work through it, how I'm going to react,
- 37:37Speaker 1: what kind of mindset I'm going to have in that moment,
- 37:40Speaker 1: and I just try to play out everything as much
- 37:41Speaker 1: as possible so I have no surprises on race day.
- 37:44Speaker 1: That's that's what I always try to tell people, Like
- 37:46Speaker 1: you have hours and hours during the week to mentally
- 37:49Speaker 1: prepare for the marathon.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Right right, and that visualization really helps you get to
- 37:56Speaker 2: where you hope to be when you meet that moment.
- 37:59Speaker 3: It helps you to meet that moment.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Because when something goes weird, like if you know you
- 38:03Speaker 1: have this hard moment, you're like, oh, I already prepared
- 38:05Speaker 1: for this in my head.
- 38:06Speaker 4: This is what I was going to do, So here's
- 38:08Speaker 4: how I'm going to react.
- 38:09Speaker 2: But then there's the moment where it doesn't go as
- 38:12Speaker 2: you had hoped, like at the Olympics for me, when
- 38:15Speaker 2: I hit these huh, non intentional. When I have a
- 38:19Speaker 2: hurdle like that and I am trying to respond a
- 38:24Speaker 2: little bit more than I want to react. I am
- 38:28Speaker 2: a big just take a few seconds, and literally I'll
- 38:33Speaker 2: count to four and then I'll be like, all right, now,
- 38:36Speaker 2: what would you do? Because if I do what I
- 38:38Speaker 2: like think instinctively maybe to do in the media, it's
- 38:42Speaker 2: probably not how I would react four seconds later, totally.
- 38:46Speaker 2: And that's so helpful, right, It's just a small step back.
- 38:48Speaker 2: And I think that approach has actually instilled in me
- 38:52Speaker 2: that you always have four seconds or I mean even
- 38:56Speaker 2: take six, right, like you always have the time. It's
- 38:59Speaker 2: very rare that you don't have the time to be like,
- 39:02Speaker 2: let me just take a beat before I respond to
- 39:04Speaker 2: this email, or before I deal with the fact that
- 39:08Speaker 2: I don't want to go here on Thanksgiving and someone
- 39:10Speaker 2: wants me there and we need to be in five
- 39:11Speaker 2: different places like whatever it might be, you know, And
- 39:13Speaker 2: so I'm always like, you have a few seconds, yeah, yeah.
- 39:16Speaker 4: Especially a marathon.
- 39:17Speaker 1: You've got a lot of time in a marathon to
- 39:19Speaker 1: figure it out, a lot of seconds.
- 39:21Speaker 4: Yes, absolutely.
- 39:22Speaker 2: I do like the concept of visualizing how you want
- 39:25Speaker 2: to handle the difficult moments and putting yourself in them.
- 39:28Speaker 2: And I think it is really special knowing that you
- 39:31Speaker 2: had gone previously to Paris to see the hills even
- 39:34Speaker 2: and what you would be dealing with there, it then
- 39:36Speaker 2: helps you. Really, I feel like it's like a level
- 39:39Speaker 2: of investment in yourself. Right, It's like, I'm going to
- 39:42Speaker 2: invest what I need to do to show up. How
- 39:45Speaker 2: I know that I want to show up so that
- 39:46Speaker 2: you can truly just be proud of whatever happens when
- 39:48Speaker 2: you're out there.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, Because at the end of the day, if
- 39:50Speaker 1: I were to place eightieth or whatever last is, and
- 39:55Speaker 1: I had done everything to the best of my ability,
- 39:57Speaker 1: and I had prepared properly and everything went as best
- 40:02Speaker 1: as I could have hoped for, if I were to
- 40:03Speaker 1: play Stadia, what's what's there to be mad about?
- 40:06Speaker 4: If you give it your all, you know.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not saying that I'll always go back to
- 40:10Speaker 2: that all it takes is all you've got, and you're
- 40:13Speaker 2: gonna have. You're gonna have different things to give on
- 40:15Speaker 2: different days, Right. I think that that is kind of
- 40:18Speaker 2: the challenge looping back on our Delulu combo, It's like,
- 40:22Speaker 2: sometimes that's the challenge in me getting delusional, because I
- 40:26Speaker 2: also recognize and have this level of self awareness that
- 40:29Speaker 2: I want to have enough grace with myself if it's
- 40:32Speaker 2: just not the perfect storm of a Delulu dayah, Right,
- 40:36Speaker 2: Like if I have a goal A on Sunday, which
- 40:39Speaker 2: was to have a great day, Like my truly A
- 40:42Speaker 2: goal is to go out there and have the most
- 40:45Speaker 2: fun and embrace it and enjoy it because I have
- 40:49Speaker 2: had New York City marathons where I was too dialed
- 40:52Speaker 2: in on other things and it's just the energy and
- 40:55Speaker 2: the people and they're wonderful.
- 40:56Speaker 3: That's the A goal.
- 40:58Speaker 2: If I go out there and run my A goal,
- 41:00Speaker 2: which is to have a great day, and then maybe
- 41:01Speaker 2: run my B goal, which could be something like a
- 41:03Speaker 2: three point thirty. If I'm in pursuit of B and
- 41:07Speaker 2: it doesn't feel like A anymore, we have to abandon B. Yeah, right,
- 41:10Speaker 2: And I feel like that's up to each of us.
- 41:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 41:13Speaker 2: It's like you can be both, Like you can see
- 41:16Speaker 2: the greatness in yourself and be willing to be a
- 41:19Speaker 2: little bit de Lulu, and then you can also be
- 41:21Speaker 2: a realist.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Absolutely, and in a lot of ways when you're setting
- 41:24Speaker 1: your goals, you need to be a realist because you
- 41:26Speaker 1: can't ask your body to do something you didn't do
- 41:28Speaker 1: in practice right during a marathon, for sure. So I
- 41:32Speaker 1: mean it's hard because you just have to that Delulu
- 41:35Speaker 1: part is seeing like I got a glimpse of that
- 41:37Speaker 1: in practice. I saw a little bit of that from
- 41:39Speaker 1: myself in practice, so in like kind of running with
- 41:42Speaker 1: that and not me sitting here and like it would
- 41:44Speaker 1: be completely unrealistic for me to sit here and be like, yeah,
- 41:47Speaker 1: I want to run at two fifteen on Sunday, Like,
- 41:49Speaker 1: I've never seen that from myself in practice, right, So
- 41:51Speaker 1: have I seen a two twenty two in practice?
- 41:53Speaker 4: Absolutely, so you know glimpses of it.
- 41:56Speaker 1: It's not guaranteed, but so that would be like, you
- 41:59Speaker 1: know that where that Dululu Park comes in.
- 42:01Speaker 2: This is coming from the woman who said that one
- 42:03Speaker 2: of her favorite workouts and the bill to New York
- 42:06Speaker 2: City Marathon was twenty eight miles at six oh five pace.
- 42:09Speaker 3: Just for the mere mortals listening to us. That is
- 42:14Speaker 3: so impressive.
- 42:15Speaker 4: It was really fun too.
- 42:17Speaker 3: She had goal a angle beat. Yeah it was.
- 42:21Speaker 4: It was super fun. Yeah.
- 42:22Speaker 1: I love the long run and I loved to crush
- 42:24Speaker 1: the LongRun, especially because our team is a mix of
- 42:26Speaker 1: male and female. So I love to kind of go
- 42:28Speaker 1: out there and be like I'm gonna stick my nose
- 42:30Speaker 1: in it with the voice today and like make them.
- 42:32Speaker 1: You know, they call it like getting chicked or whatever,
- 42:35Speaker 1: so I like that. Uh, I get to push them too.
- 42:38Speaker 2: My mouth just agaped when she said getting chicked.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what that's what they call it when guys
- 42:43Speaker 1: like get beat by girls.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Or my goodness. Also, I just caught a glimpse of
- 42:47Speaker 2: your rings tattoo.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Oh yes, oh my god.
- 42:50Speaker 1: If you got carries, yes, yes, and I went together.
- 42:55Speaker 1: She was one of the first members of Minnesota Distance
- 42:57Speaker 1: Ely so when I made the team, she was like me,
- 42:59Speaker 1: and we're gonna go, like I want to finally go
- 43:01Speaker 1: get them.
- 43:02Speaker 3: So, oh my god, that's so special. Yeah. Do you
- 43:05Speaker 3: have any other tattoos?
- 43:06Speaker 1: I have two others, One for my mom who passed
- 43:09Speaker 1: in twenty twenty, and then when I was eighteen, I
- 43:11Speaker 1: got a Bible versa on my calf.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Thanks for sharing that. Yeah, what did your mom pass
- 43:16Speaker 2: away from lung cancer?
- 43:17Speaker 3: Okay?
- 43:19Speaker 2: How did it feel for you to get this, to
- 43:22Speaker 2: meet this moment without her?
- 43:25Speaker 4: That?
- 43:25Speaker 1: Uh one of I mean, it was one of the
- 43:28Speaker 1: most magical moments in my life, but also one of
- 43:29Speaker 1: the hardest for that reason, because she's She's actually the
- 43:32Speaker 1: reason I started running. She I played hockey growing up,
- 43:35Speaker 1: and I was super invested in hockey, but she really
- 43:39Speaker 1: believed that, you know, great athletes are good in a
- 43:42Speaker 1: lot of things and that I should broad in my horizons,
- 43:44Speaker 1: which in that moment, I was like, Mom, you hate me.
- 43:47Speaker 4: You don't believe in my dreams. You don't think I
- 43:48Speaker 4: can be a professional hockey player.
- 43:51Speaker 1: But it turns out Mom was right that I did
- 43:53Speaker 1: just need to broaden my horizons, make some new friends,
- 43:55Speaker 1: get some new friend groups, and yeah, I went out
- 43:58Speaker 1: for track because she was forced me to try something new,
- 44:01Speaker 1: and she was my biggest supporter. Like she literally knew
- 44:05Speaker 1: nothing about running. If she'd always say, if I'm running,
- 44:07Speaker 1: I'm running away from something, So she just she had
- 44:12Speaker 1: no idea what was ever happening. She didn't know how
- 44:14Speaker 1: long a marathon was, She had no idea how long
- 44:16Speaker 1: a ten k was. That they were all the same
- 44:18Speaker 1: to her. But she was always so proud of me,
- 44:21Speaker 1: whether I won or took last, Like if she was
- 44:24Speaker 1: on the finish line, she was bawling.
- 44:25Speaker 4: Her eyes out with fries.
- 44:26Speaker 1: So uh, it's tough that she never got to see
- 44:30Speaker 1: me like become a professional runner with Puma. She didn't
- 44:32Speaker 1: get to see me when Grandma's marathon. She didn't get
- 44:35Speaker 1: to see me make an Olympic team. Those are well
- 44:38Speaker 1: she in my opinion, she did get to see me.
- 44:40Speaker 1: It's just help that I didn't get to celebrate those
- 44:42Speaker 1: moments with her.
- 44:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it's uh, it's clear that you got your sense
- 44:48Speaker 2: of relentless self belief from her.
- 44:51Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, Yeah, so some day I'll get to go
- 44:55Speaker 1: to heaven and thank her for all of this.
- 44:56Speaker 3: Yeah, oh my god.
- 44:58Speaker 2: And I'm sure all so a bit difficult considering the
- 45:04Speaker 2: circumstances to then your small wedding, right yeah. I think
- 45:08Speaker 2: that that's something a lot of people can really relate to,
- 45:11Speaker 2: is carrying with them and holding someone so close to
- 45:16Speaker 2: them who's no longer with us, and continuing to live
- 45:19Speaker 2: in celebration of them, rather than frustration that, oh I
- 45:24Speaker 2: wish they could be here for this. It's another both moment,
- 45:27Speaker 2: right yeah.
- 45:27Speaker 3: For sure both?
- 45:28Speaker 1: Yeah, because I for sure Mother's Day comes around and
- 45:30Speaker 1: I'm frustrated all day, you know. You see, I've to
- 45:33Speaker 1: almost not be on Instagram because you get that almost
- 45:36Speaker 1: selfishness of why do all these other people have moms?
- 45:40Speaker 1: You know, and it's really hard, but I do know that,
- 45:44Speaker 1: you know she's she's watching from somewhere else, and that's
- 45:47Speaker 1: just what I have to hold on to and believe in.
- 45:49Speaker 1: And I'm really lucky that her sister, my aunt obviously
- 45:53Speaker 1: is growing up. She was always like a second mom
- 45:56Speaker 1: to me, so I still have her here with me,
- 45:57Speaker 1: and she got to like be my mom. I'm at
- 46:00Speaker 1: my wedding, she got to come and give me away
- 46:02Speaker 1: in a way.
- 46:03Speaker 4: So it's nice to have that too.
- 46:06Speaker 2: What do you think has been the most helpful tool
- 46:08Speaker 2: for you in navigating your own grief.
- 46:12Speaker 1: I not too long after I lost my mom, maybe
- 46:16Speaker 1: a couple days after my grandpa, her dad sat me
- 46:20Speaker 1: down and said, it's going to be like waves in
- 46:22Speaker 1: the ocean. Sometimes they hit you really hard out of nowhere,
- 46:26Speaker 1: and sometimes they're nice and soft. Most days, it's gonna
- 46:29Speaker 1: get nice and soft. You're not gonna get hit by it.
- 46:32Speaker 1: But then you're gonna smell something that's gonna remind you
- 46:34Speaker 1: of her. It's gonna hit you like a tidal wave.
- 46:36Speaker 1: And it's so true. Like now, it's been over four years.
- 46:40Speaker 1: Most days, you know, I think about her probably every day,
- 46:43Speaker 1: and most days that's fine, but every now and again,
- 46:46Speaker 1: something will happen and I'll just lose it like it's
- 46:49Speaker 1: like it happened yesterday. So I think that's been really
- 46:54Speaker 1: a good When that happens, I just think of my
- 46:56Speaker 1: grandpa and say like, oh, it's just one of those
- 46:57Speaker 1: big ways today and that's okay. Normal, And nobody's grief
- 47:01Speaker 1: is the same. So however, I grieved as not the
- 47:03Speaker 1: same way my dad grieved, you know.
- 47:05Speaker 2: Mm hmm, exactly, And a reminder that you navigated all
- 47:10Speaker 2: of the hard moments up until this point and you're
- 47:13Speaker 2: still standing exactly. And so when you think of it
- 47:17Speaker 2: that way, even in the ones where you feel as
- 47:21Speaker 2: though you are in a dark room and incapable of
- 47:25Speaker 2: opening the curtains and all you want is the light outside.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Right in those moments, you say to yourself, but I've
- 47:31Speaker 2: been here before totally and we're okay.
- 47:34Speaker 1: And I think that goes forward to like all hard things,
- 47:36Speaker 1: Like I've been through so many hard things in my life,
- 47:38Speaker 1: and so when it gets hard on Sunday, I've been
- 47:42Speaker 1: through way worse that I can get through. I can
- 47:44Speaker 1: get through another hard moment.
- 47:46Speaker 4: Very sure.
- 47:46Speaker 3: What are you excited about right now?
- 47:48Speaker 2: Aside from Sunday knowing that this airs after the big
- 47:52Speaker 2: race foreshadow moment.
- 47:53Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I'm really excited, honestly, Like, I'm very
- 47:56Speaker 1: excited for the race, but I'm also very excited for
- 47:59Speaker 1: after the race. This is It's been kind of a
- 48:01Speaker 1: crazy year, so I'm very very ready for like a
- 48:05Speaker 1: solid two weeks off.
- 48:06Speaker 4: Of running for two weeks.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Yes, I always take one week, but I told my coach,
- 48:10Speaker 1: I want this to be an exception. Maybe I'll run
- 48:12Speaker 1: in that second week, but I don't want it to
- 48:14Speaker 1: be mandatory. I just want to, like, if I feel
- 48:17Speaker 1: i'll go run with Montana, I'm sure whatever he's doing
- 48:19Speaker 1: that week. But I'm just excited to have a step
- 48:22Speaker 1: away from running for a little bit.
- 48:24Speaker 2: I know that you plan out like a year or
- 48:27Speaker 2: two and an ideas.
- 48:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I won't make.
- 48:30Speaker 2: You tell me what's on the horizon, but is there
- 48:32Speaker 2: anything you can share?
- 48:35Speaker 1: You know, I can always share that I'll be at
- 48:36Speaker 1: Grandma's Marathon. I'm unsure if I'll do the marathon or
- 48:40Speaker 1: the half this year because we have a World Championship
- 48:43Speaker 1: in September. If I get selected, I can tell you
- 48:45Speaker 1: this too. If I get selected for that team, I'm
- 48:47Speaker 1: going to take my spot. So in that case, I'd
- 48:49Speaker 1: run the half marathon at Grandma's.
- 48:50Speaker 3: But and that would be your first worlds, it.
- 48:52Speaker 4: Would be my first worlds.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, I'd love to go to Tokyo and be
- 48:57Speaker 1: really competitive there, but I'll do a spring mare on.
- 49:01Speaker 1: People can probably guess what's fun, but I yeah, I
- 49:06Speaker 1: love to do a marathon, so.
- 49:07Speaker 3: I don't know. They might be able to guess whusch one.
- 49:09Speaker 2: But also like, if worlds are in Tokyo, then maybe
- 49:11Speaker 2: you want to go to Tokyo again. You never know,
- 49:13Speaker 2: You're totally inferring, Like you could probably guess it's going
- 49:16Speaker 2: to be Boston, But in my head, I'm like, could
- 49:18Speaker 2: be a really great preview.
- 49:20Speaker 4: Yeah, it really had over. That's true. That is a
- 49:22Speaker 4: good point.
- 49:23Speaker 3: I'm just here to help them keep guessing.
- 49:24Speaker 4: With Yes, I'm just confused.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Right now, someone goes to your Instagram feed and they
- 49:31Speaker 2: see a woman who, in her own words, is now
- 49:34Speaker 2: a quote unquote big name, someone that is a stellar
- 49:39Speaker 2: marathon or someone who also just got married. But when
- 49:42Speaker 2: you look in the mirror, what is it that you
- 49:44Speaker 2: see looking back at you.
- 49:46Speaker 4: Oh that's a deep, deep question.
- 49:48Speaker 3: You're here, Okay, I'm here. She just got cozy. She's like, oh,
- 49:52Speaker 3: now we're settling in.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Yeah, oh gosh. That's like it's so introspective. I feel
- 49:58Speaker 1: like I see somebody who loves to run, who is
- 50:02Speaker 1: living their dream. Like, I wait, you know they say like,
- 50:05Speaker 1: you don't work a day in your life if you
- 50:07Speaker 1: do what you love. That's me, Like, that's so cliche
- 50:09Speaker 1: and so corny, but that's one hundred percent me.
- 50:11Speaker 4: I feel like I am living a fairy tale. Just
- 50:15Speaker 4: married the best man on the planet. In my opinion,
- 50:18Speaker 4: running's going great. Knock on wood. I've got great friends,
- 50:22Speaker 4: great family.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Yeah, outside of running and spending time with your partner,
- 50:28Speaker 2: what is it that you enjoy doing the most?
- 50:31Speaker 1: So that's another reason I'm excited for after the marathon.
- 50:34Speaker 1: I'm a big golfer and pickleball player. Which pickleball I
- 50:38Speaker 1: really take a step back from when I'm in marathon
- 50:41Speaker 1: training because it's a lot of lateral movement.
- 50:43Speaker 4: I get sore from it. Golf not so much.
- 50:46Speaker 1: You can kind of do that through marathon training, but
- 50:47Speaker 1: I do taper off for sure. So I'm excited to
- 50:50Speaker 1: like have time to do the other things that I love,
- 50:52Speaker 1: like those those activities.
- 50:54Speaker 2: I want to circle back to the specialness that is
- 50:57Speaker 2: Jackson for a moment, because he is just an example
- 51:00Speaker 2: of so many of the younger individuals. And I want
- 51:06Speaker 2: to say specifically also young women that now look up
- 51:10Speaker 2: to you and they're like, I want to be like Dakota.
- 51:12Speaker 2: When I say that to you, how does that make
- 51:14Speaker 2: you feel?
- 51:16Speaker 4: It's crazy for sure.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Yeah, you have a hard time putting yourself in this
- 51:21Speaker 1: box of like I looked up to Daz or I
- 51:24Speaker 1: looked up to.
- 51:25Speaker 4: Especially like care Gaucher.
- 51:26Speaker 1: As a Minnesotan, it's hard for me to put myself
- 51:29Speaker 1: in this box of like, oh, people are going to say, like, oh,
- 51:31Speaker 1: I looked up to Dakota. But it makes every hard
- 51:35Speaker 1: day of running worth it. Like if I can inspire
- 51:37Speaker 1: one little kid to keep going, if I can inspire
- 51:40Speaker 1: one college walk on to really give it there all,
- 51:43Speaker 1: or you know, try for the Olympic Trials after college,
- 51:47Speaker 1: that makes every hard mile, every hard.
- 51:49Speaker 4: Day worth it for me.
- 51:51Speaker 2: If you had to sit down with someone and bring
- 51:54Speaker 2: your notebook and learn something new these days, is there
- 51:58Speaker 2: anything that you're interested in exploring that you haven't done
- 52:00Speaker 2: so yet.
- 52:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say the world of ultra.
- 52:06Speaker 1: I think that's like a little foreshadowing for in a
- 52:08Speaker 1: few years. I would love to get into that world.
- 52:11Speaker 1: I'd love to learn more about how you train for that.
- 52:14Speaker 1: I'm wanna take down Des London's world record.
- 52:17Speaker 2: I was just gonna say, we just need to get
- 52:18Speaker 2: you and Dez together and have a chat.
- 52:21Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
- 52:22Speaker 1: I think that's a world that I know very little about,
- 52:25Speaker 1: and I would love to learn more. And I think
- 52:27Speaker 1: place to my strong suit. So yeah, I want to
- 52:29Speaker 1: have some world records to.
- 52:30Speaker 4: My name it.
- 52:31Speaker 3: You know.
- 52:31Speaker 1: Unfortunately, after watching Chicago, I know that's not going to
- 52:34Speaker 1: happen in the marathon.
- 52:36Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, that was so fast.
- 52:38Speaker 1: But so I think I'm gonna have to look more
- 52:40Speaker 1: towards the fifty k fifty mile.
- 52:42Speaker 2: Wow, But there was a time when you weren't quite
- 52:45Speaker 2: yet at the marathon distance that I'm sure you had
- 52:47Speaker 2: some of those same feelings, right, you're like twenty six
- 52:50Speaker 2: miles five k, ten k sure, but twenty six yea.
- 52:53Speaker 3: So it's the same vibe and you've done quite well here.
- 52:56Speaker 4: Yeah, that's yeah, that's true.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Anything else you want to do before you New York?
- 53:00Speaker 2: As if I'm running this marathon.
- 53:02Speaker 1: You know, I want to go get some good New
- 53:04Speaker 1: York pizza, get some good beer on old fashion.
- 53:08Speaker 4: I'm excited to let loose for sure.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Oh my god, I'm so excited, so hard, so hard
- 53:13Speaker 2: fought and very well deserved. I will be thinking of
- 53:17Speaker 2: you over the weekend of you.
- 53:19Speaker 3: Oh, oh my god. And Jackson, I'm do you know
- 53:22Speaker 3: where he's going to be on the course.
- 53:23Speaker 4: I think he's going to be around mile twenty one.
- 53:25Speaker 2: Oh so, well, make sure you have exact coordinates. We
- 53:28Speaker 2: need to know northwest corner, northeast corner.
- 53:31Speaker 1: So yeah, I think I could hear him anywhere they're
- 53:33Speaker 1: trying to go, specifically where it's pretty quiet.
- 53:35Speaker 2: Great, Yeah, that's up the fifth Avenue. Help on twenty one.
- 53:39Speaker 2: That might be it's on the way, it's you're on
- 53:40Speaker 2: the way there, I know exactly. It's good. It's a
- 53:42Speaker 2: good area. Well, I will to look for Jackson. Yes,
- 53:45Speaker 2: right now, you have an opportunity to offer yourself a
- 53:47Speaker 2: piece of advice. I want to go back to when
- 53:49Speaker 2: your mom pushed you into running, and you're this hockey
- 53:52Speaker 2: girl who is so determined to go one way, so
- 53:55Speaker 2: determined to go right when somebody else important do you
- 53:58Speaker 2: want to you to go to left knowing what you
- 54:00Speaker 2: know now and seeing everything that you've done. What would
- 54:03Speaker 2: you tell that younger version of yourself?
- 54:06Speaker 4: I would say, listen to your mom.
- 54:08Speaker 1: She literally always knows what's best and you're gonna have
- 54:11Speaker 1: to like eat your words later that you say to her.
- 54:13Speaker 1: So yeah, just like buckle up, try something new. You
- 54:17Speaker 1: just don't know where it's going to take you. And
- 54:20Speaker 1: she was right, like great athletes are great a lot
- 54:22Speaker 1: of things, so you just never know what's going to happen.
- 54:24Speaker 3: You never know.
- 54:25Speaker 2: I'm so happy and like so grateful that we were
- 54:28Speaker 2: finally able to sit down one on one and again
- 54:30Speaker 2: I'll be cheering for you this weekend.
- 54:32Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 54:32Speaker 2: For those that don't follow along with you just yet,
- 54:35Speaker 2: how do they keep up with you on social? Give
- 54:36Speaker 2: us the info?
- 54:37Speaker 1: Yeah I am now I'm stuckond guessing it. I'm either
- 54:41Speaker 1: Dakota Lindworm or Dakota Popaine on Instagram.
- 54:43Speaker 4: I switched it. I think my handle's technically still Dakota.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Lindworm Okay, let me check, and then I changed my
- 54:50Speaker 1: name to Dakota Popain.
- 54:53Speaker 3: You are yes, you did?
- 54:55Speaker 4: Yes?
- 54:55Speaker 3: Oh wow? Do you think you'll keep the handle.
- 54:57Speaker 1: At some point I'll change a handle verified on Instagram,
- 55:01Speaker 1: so I've got to like, this is something I didn't know.
- 55:04Speaker 1: You have to submit your photo ID to get verified,
- 55:07Speaker 1: like I had to send them a picture. So once
- 55:08Speaker 1: I get my actual Dakota unquo pain, then I'll sweat
- 55:11Speaker 1: check because I don't want to lose my check mark.
- 55:13Speaker 3: Of course not. We need to keep the check mark.
- 55:14Speaker 4: I fought hard for that thing.
- 55:15Speaker 3: So small time, big time athletes need checkmarks.
- 55:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I am over at Emily a Bodi and at
- 55:22Speaker 2: Hurdle Podcast.
- 55:23Speaker 3: Another Hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time
