- 0:03Speaker 1: Nationals manager Blake Buttera is with us here at spring
- 0:07Speaker 1: training at NAT's camp. So, Blake, how is camp your
- 0:10Speaker 1: first experience here running this team going for you?
- 0:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been a blast. Guys are awesome. West Palm
- 0:17Speaker 2: Beach is awesome. We're just talking about food and restaurants
- 0:19Speaker 2: around and yeah, nothing to complain about.
- 0:22Speaker 3: The players have been outstanding.
- 0:24Speaker 2: They've they've all shown up early and have been ready
- 0:27Speaker 2: to work, and staff's been awesome, and.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Yeah, everything's good. What's your first meeting?
- 0:31Speaker 3: Go first union?
- 0:32Speaker 4: Are you a writer down on the paper or are
- 0:35Speaker 4: you just winging off your Yes.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I jot down like a few notes, but I'm better.
- 0:39Speaker 2: It's just kind of talking. I feel like when I read,
- 0:41Speaker 2: it's just it doesn't feel real. So I just kind
- 0:44Speaker 2: of kind of get it started off the paper and
- 0:46Speaker 2: then go from the heart.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Get anyone's name.
- 0:50Speaker 5: You have to introduce to everybody, and there's like four
- 0:52Speaker 5: hundred staff. I had them all introduce themselves.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been there seeing Cashy do it every year.
- 1:00Speaker 5: I'm not making that he forgets like the fourth team
- 1:02Speaker 5: doctor that he's never seen. He's like and that's uh
- 1:06Speaker 5: out there. Yeah, usually it's me that he forgets. He's like,
- 1:08Speaker 5: who's that guy?
- 1:09Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 1:09Speaker 4: Do you think you're a player? What?
- 1:12Speaker 5: What?
- 1:12Speaker 4: What's your What was your message to the guys?
- 1:15Speaker 2: I mean the big part of it is like I
- 1:17Speaker 2: want this to be a player led clubhouse. I just
- 1:19Speaker 2: feel like when players hold each other accountable, it means
- 1:21Speaker 2: a lot more than when the coaches have to do it.
- 1:23Speaker 2: At the end of the day, like, this is their career,
- 1:25Speaker 2: So making sure they understand like our job as a
- 1:27Speaker 2: coaching staff is just to be here and provide whatever
- 1:30Speaker 2: they need necessary. We'll we'll kind of basically like keep
- 1:33Speaker 2: the train on the tracks, but it's up to them
- 1:35Speaker 2: to control their career and anything they need. We're gonna
- 1:38Speaker 2: be in their corners and support the heck out of them.
- 1:42Speaker 7: Are you willing to be able to be the guy
- 1:44Speaker 7: that lays the discipline down or do you feel like
- 1:47Speaker 7: a Randy Nor one of your other coaches is going
- 1:49Speaker 7: to be that guy?
- 1:51Speaker 4: No?
- 1:52Speaker 2: I think yeah, if it comes to it, I will
- 1:55Speaker 2: be if if that's what it takes. Hopefully we get
- 1:58Speaker 2: to a point where these guys have to hold themselves accountable.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But I'm sure there will be things that come up
- 2:02Speaker 2: throughout the year. Where I'm gonna have to step in
- 2:05Speaker 2: and say something, and yeah, certainly ready and willing to
- 2:08Speaker 2: do that.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Who's more nervous the first day? Was it you or Paul.
- 2:14Speaker 5: When you had to get when you both got up
- 2:16Speaker 5: in front of the team for the first time, because
- 2:17Speaker 5: this is his first time running an organization, Yeah, this
- 2:20Speaker 5: is your first time being the guy who was Who
- 2:22Speaker 5: do you think was more nervous?
- 2:24Speaker 2: It's a good question, I think, Yeah, yeah, if you
- 2:29Speaker 2: was Rock I've been there for like a month and
- 2:31Speaker 2: a half.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I was ready to go.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Hey, Blake, I have a question in terms of how
- 2:38Speaker 1: you put your stamp on everything that you're going to
- 2:41Speaker 1: do now you, Paul and the rest of the new
- 2:43Speaker 1: staff there. How much background did you do on what
- 2:47Speaker 1: was happening before you guys got there, say, over the
- 2:49Speaker 1: last year or two or three, And then how do
- 2:52Speaker 1: you take that and say, okay, cool, scratch a few
- 2:55Speaker 1: of these things. Let's evolve a few of these things,
- 2:57Speaker 1: like did you do almost like conversations on the phone
- 3:00Speaker 1: with players and say, hey, let me get everything that
- 3:02Speaker 1: you guys did and then let me see what I
- 3:04Speaker 1: was doing at other spots and what we can bring
- 3:07Speaker 1: over there.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it was definitely collaborative. So I reached out to
- 3:15Speaker 2: the guys that have been here the longest and just
- 3:16Speaker 2: wanted to hear about like, hey, you know, what are
- 3:19Speaker 2: what are some things that we can improve upon anything.
- 3:22Speaker 2: It could be the food, it could have been, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 2: the workouts, the timing of what time things happened, and
- 3:30Speaker 2: just kind of got some feedback on what we could
- 3:32Speaker 2: make improvements on. And obviously we couldn't do everything, but
- 3:35Speaker 2: I told them that, like, whatever was the most important
- 3:38Speaker 2: and whatever is the most consistent that we're hearing from
- 3:40Speaker 2: the guys, like, those are the things that we're going
- 3:41Speaker 2: to fix. And then secondly, bring in our coaching staff
- 3:45Speaker 2: from all different organizations, just kind of bending their ears
- 3:48Speaker 2: on things that they did with other organizations that they liked,
- 3:51Speaker 2: they didn't like, and just kind of mesh all that together,
- 3:54Speaker 2: and which requires a lot of meetings with the staff,
- 3:57Speaker 2: of course, but just trying to find a blend of things.
- 4:00Speaker 4: That we like that can make adjustments to.
- 4:02Speaker 6: What's one of the things that you made adjustments to.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think early on was just Spring training as
- 4:10Speaker 2: a whole, and a lot of organizations as I'm sure
- 4:13Speaker 2: I mean, Eric, you've been in a lot of spring
- 4:15Speaker 2: trainings and AJAU as well, Like they're all different, But
- 4:19Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing is like we asked these
- 4:21Speaker 2: guys get to the field so early, and also just
- 4:24Speaker 2: being cognizant of the fact that, like a lot of
- 4:25Speaker 2: these players have families, wives, kids, and during the season
- 4:28Speaker 2: they're going to spend a lot of time away from
- 4:30Speaker 2: them with the travel. So during spring training it's like,
- 4:32Speaker 2: what are we trying to accomplish? And when we asked
- 4:34Speaker 2: you to be at the field, Let's make sure we're
- 4:35Speaker 2: efficient with our time and we're getting to work in
- 4:37Speaker 2: we need to get in versus just like being here
- 4:40Speaker 2: at six am and not leave until three o'clock and
- 4:42Speaker 2: it's like you go home and you're like, what did
- 4:44Speaker 2: I even do? I took like twelve swings and took
- 4:46Speaker 2: a few ground balls that I was there for seven
- 4:48Speaker 2: eight hours. So making sure that like the time we
- 4:51Speaker 2: do ask them to be here, that they're getting a
- 4:52Speaker 2: lot out of that.
- 4:54Speaker 6: What is your managing style?
- 4:55Speaker 7: If somebody would say, Okay, I see this in him
- 4:59Speaker 7: every single day, what would you say your managing style
- 5:03Speaker 7: is and will be in the big leagues.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I think being the same person every day. Like the
- 5:09Speaker 2: consistency is probably the biggest thing, you know. It's funny
- 5:12Speaker 2: I tell you, like my wife and others, a lot
- 5:15Speaker 2: of times they're like, do you ever get you know, mad?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Or do you ever get super happy? And sometimes I
- 5:19Speaker 2: wish i'd do, but I think just part of my
- 5:21Speaker 2: my nature is just being like very consistent and like
- 5:24Speaker 2: just yell at.
- 5:25Speaker 4: The guys if they make it, If they make you angry,
- 5:27Speaker 4: you're gonna break.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I've better at a handful of times before, whether granted
- 5:31Speaker 2: it was the minor leagues, but yeah I can. I
- 5:32Speaker 2: can get there a lot. Yeah, yeah, you feel better
- 5:38Speaker 2: afterwards sometimes, Yeah, it hasn't happened that frequently to know
- 5:43Speaker 2: if I feel sometimes when you.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Go home, do you feel bad about it and you
- 5:47Speaker 5: tell your usually your family, like gosh, I snapped today.
- 5:54Speaker 5: I love it.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I think, just yeah, being the same person, Like this
- 5:57Speaker 2: is a really hard game. I was released as a
- 5:59Speaker 2: player and I get it, Like this is it's really
- 6:01Speaker 2: really hard what we're asking these guys to do every day.
- 6:03Speaker 2: So just understanding, like if these guys are giving their
- 6:06Speaker 2: best and they're running balls out and then we can
- 6:08Speaker 2: tell they're giving a good effort. Like just bearing with
- 6:11Speaker 2: them and making sure they know we're in their corner
- 6:13Speaker 2: and we're gonna help them along the way.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Hey, Blake, can you throw out a name or two
- 6:18Speaker 1: that you think are showing signs of significant improvement so far?
- 6:21Speaker 1: Of course, you know we're not going to talk a
- 6:23Speaker 1: ton about results. It's early spring training, and even spring
- 6:26Speaker 1: training stats in general. You got to take with a
- 6:28Speaker 1: grain of salt, but maybe a player or two that
- 6:30Speaker 1: you identified when you were studying this team and said, hey,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I think we can unlock a thing or two here
- 6:36Speaker 1: with some fresh voices.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I think the first couple that come to mind is
- 6:41Speaker 2: like Kie Cavali. He's been unbelievable so far, just the
- 6:45Speaker 2: work he's put in this offseason, the mindset he has.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I'm not sure if you have got a chance to
- 6:50Speaker 2: talk to him yet, but he's he's so competitive and
- 6:55Speaker 2: just as a monster from the mound, oozes confidence and
- 6:58Speaker 2: just wants to win, wants to be great.
- 7:00Speaker 3: He's been.
- 7:00Speaker 2: He's been outstanding so far. And then CJ Abrams is one.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I know everyone loves to talk about CJ. He's an
- 7:06Speaker 2: incredible player, but you know, just the first couple of
- 7:09Speaker 2: times we've talked with CJ. Is like he wants to
- 7:11Speaker 2: get better defensively at shortstop. He wants to be one
- 7:14Speaker 2: of the top ten shortstops in baseball overall, not just
- 7:18Speaker 2: offensive shortstop, but he wants to be that total package,
- 7:21Speaker 2: Like he wants to be a good defender, he wants
- 7:23Speaker 2: to steal bases, he wants to hit for a.
- 7:25Speaker 3: High average and home runs.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And I think just kind of tapping into those those
- 7:29Speaker 2: other parts of his games, whether it be base running, defense,
- 7:32Speaker 2: I think we're gonna have a really good year out
- 7:34Speaker 2: of CJ.
- 7:36Speaker 5: Who what do you need to be successful this year
- 7:39Speaker 5: as your first year manager? And maybe it's not a
- 7:41Speaker 5: maybe it's a team thing. Maybe it's something for you,
- 7:44Speaker 5: but what do you need to see? Because people are
- 7:47Speaker 5: looking at this team saying, Okay, they're in a tough NL.
- 7:50Speaker 5: Least it's tough National League overall, what do you want
- 7:53Speaker 5: to see your first year as a manager.
- 7:55Speaker 4: You can walk away from this year and say it
- 7:57Speaker 4: was a successful year.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think I want to see these players.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I mean they've all said it right, like they they're
- 8:03Speaker 2: not finished products like that. There's a constant theme and
- 8:06Speaker 2: message from these guys of like Hey, like we want
- 8:09Speaker 2: to get better, like individually, Like we're twenty three, twenty
- 8:13Speaker 2: four to twenty five years old. We're in the big leagues, yes,
- 8:15Speaker 2: but like there's still a long ways that we can
- 8:17Speaker 2: go and we want to reach our ceiling. So it's
- 8:20Speaker 2: it's kind of building out those those daily routines, those
- 8:22Speaker 2: daily habits of whether it be offensively defensively on the
- 8:25Speaker 2: basis and just continue to push these guys individually as
- 8:28Speaker 2: players to come better.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I think when you, you know, when.
- 8:32Speaker 2: You show up at the park early and you see
- 8:34Speaker 2: you know, CJ working on his defense before the fans
- 8:36Speaker 2: are in the stands, when you see James out there
- 8:38Speaker 2: running balls down in the outfield, and just the early
- 8:42Speaker 2: work and the attention of detail, like those are the
- 8:45Speaker 2: things to me that that stand out the most.
- 8:47Speaker 5: And I want to see us do a really good
- 8:48Speaker 5: job of best Boston college baseball player.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Currently or ever ever. Oh man, there's a lot of
- 8:54Speaker 2: good ones. Michael King probably right now over overll sal
- 9:00Speaker 2: and King at the close one I played with Michael King,
- 9:04Speaker 2: so you're going in that was right after me.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Okay. We just have Sala with Team Italy, so love
- 9:09Speaker 3: so okay.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Hey, that's my last point here, real quick, Blake, how
- 9:14Speaker 1: locked in are you going to be to the WBC?
- 9:16Speaker 8: And I mean we had Vinny P.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Pascortino on the other day and he talked about how
- 9:20Speaker 1: important you were to that team.
- 9:22Speaker 8: So I think they're gonna miss you.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Man, No, I love those guys. They're they're gonna be
- 9:26Speaker 2: great there. They'll be just fine. There were some some
- 9:29Speaker 2: really good dudes on that team. And just an All
- 9:32Speaker 2: Baseball Classic in general, Like, it's such a cool, cool tournament,
- 9:35Speaker 2: cool event. This morning we got to the gym, turned
- 9:38Speaker 2: on the Korea and check game and just all the
- 9:41Speaker 2: guys are locked in. It's just a lot of fun
- 9:43Speaker 2: seeing these guys compete their countries. And I think whenever
- 9:46Speaker 2: you can get international baseball in the grand stage, like
- 9:49Speaker 2: it's just it's just a blast.
- 9:51Speaker 5: Every time I see Piazza, Mike Piazza, who obviously he
- 9:54Speaker 5: defends you. He defends this guy like you're part of
- 9:58Speaker 5: his family. I don't know when you got higher. We
- 10:00Speaker 5: were like, man, he's young to be a manager. In Piazza,
- 10:02Speaker 5: lay off my guy, But terror he's my guy. He's
- 10:04Speaker 5: gonna be great. I saw him a couple of months ago. Hey,
- 10:08Speaker 5: how you interviewed you Terry Yet he's awesome And I'm like,
- 10:11Speaker 5: what do you guys have with each other?
- 10:13Speaker 4: And I forgot that you guys run? Yeah yeah, he
- 10:16Speaker 4: was like, that's my guy. I leave him alone.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Yeah yea.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Yeah, he's been awesome.
- 10:20Speaker 2: He reaches out, always checking on things and giving advice,
- 10:23Speaker 2: and I know he's uh, he loves the team speeches.
- 10:26Speaker 3: That's what he lives for.
- 10:27Speaker 2: So he's like, Hey, if I ever need to jump
- 10:29Speaker 2: in there and fire the boys up, let me know.
- 10:33Speaker 8: That's good.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Well, Blake, thank you for the time. Good to see
- 10:36Speaker 1: enjoy the rest of spring.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Thanks Scott, Thanks Eric, thanks to a j appreciate you guys.
- 10:42Speaker 1: We've got James Wood from the Nationals joining us right
- 10:44Speaker 1: now over at Camp.
- 10:46Speaker 8: James, how's everything going?
- 10:47Speaker 1: And I want to know how camp is with kind
- 10:50Speaker 1: of a new regime taking over here, including front office
- 10:53Speaker 1: and your manager, Blake Puterra.
- 10:56Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean Camp's been good so far. I mean
- 10:58Speaker 9: I think everyone's just been super excited. I mean it's
- 11:02Speaker 9: it's a lot of new faces, so just getting to
- 11:04Speaker 9: know everybody and come to with these guys, and I
- 11:07Speaker 9: mean it's a lot of new ideas so.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Way, what have they brought for you?
- 11:12Speaker 9: I mean there's nothing, but nothing crazy. I mean, just
- 11:16Speaker 9: just a lot of defensive stuff. I mean we're trying
- 11:19Speaker 9: to hammer that. I mean I feel like that's that's
- 11:22Speaker 9: one area that me, myself and and and a lot
- 11:25Speaker 9: of these guys feel like we can make.
- 11:27Speaker 4: A lot of strides.
- 11:28Speaker 5: So what about offensively, I'm on there and hit forty
- 11:32Speaker 5: driving a hundred, I.
- 11:33Speaker 9: Mean yeah, that'd be nice. But I mean yeah, just
- 11:36Speaker 9: just controlling the zone. I mean just they're just super
- 11:38Speaker 9: big on that. I mean, I feel like once you
- 11:41Speaker 9: do that, I feel like the results kind of come
- 11:43Speaker 9: with that.
- 11:44Speaker 5: Before we dig really deep in the Nationals. I want
- 11:46Speaker 5: to know, you're from Maryland, grew up in Maryland, but
- 11:49Speaker 5: then you moved.
- 11:49Speaker 4: To IMG Academy. Why why? Why did you?
- 11:52Speaker 8: Why do you?
- 11:53Speaker 4: How does the guy from Maryland end up at Bradenton
- 11:55Speaker 4: andt IMG.
- 11:56Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I just felt like going there, like, well,
- 12:02Speaker 9: in Maryland, I played basketball and baseball, so I always
- 12:06Speaker 9: kind of knew like baseball is kind of gonna be
- 12:09Speaker 9: my main focus. But I think once I went there,
- 12:11Speaker 9: like that was kind of I was making a decision
- 12:14Speaker 9: to really just lock in on baseball, and I just
- 12:16Speaker 9: feel like that was the best place.
- 12:17Speaker 6: To do it. Do you miss basketball?
- 12:21Speaker 9: Uh, not a whole lot. I mean I like, I like,
- 12:24Speaker 9: I miss like playing pick up like one, three on
- 12:27Speaker 9: three and all that, But I feel I feel good
- 12:31Speaker 9: where I'm at now, so I don't miss it a
- 12:32Speaker 9: whole lot.
- 12:33Speaker 5: I heard there's a wicked pickup game here among the coaches.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Now you can't play it, but I heard the coaches
- 12:37Speaker 5: in the front office of them.
- 12:39Speaker 9: Really, I gotta ask you about that.
- 12:41Speaker 5: You might find out, you might post, you can post play.
- 12:48Speaker 9: Hey, find out about that.
- 12:51Speaker 8: James question for you.
- 12:53Speaker 1: So going back to what I was asking at the top,
- 12:55Speaker 1: when you get a new group in, right, I know
- 12:58Speaker 1: they try to do some homework and speak to some
- 13:00Speaker 1: players that have been there for a minute and say, hey,
- 13:03Speaker 1: what did you love and we won't change it? What
- 13:05Speaker 1: did you not love and we'll try and change it.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Did you get asked that, and if so, what was
- 13:10Speaker 1: your answer?
- 13:13Speaker 9: I mean, yeah, I didn't. I didn't really have a
- 13:15Speaker 9: whole lot to say. I mean, I just think the
- 13:18Speaker 9: main thing for me was just like just try and
- 13:20Speaker 9: build a good relationship with these guys. And I feel
- 13:23Speaker 9: like the rest will kind of take care of itself.
- 13:25Speaker 9: I feel like once everyone's sort of comfortable around each other,
- 13:28Speaker 9: then then I feel like we can we could, we
- 13:30Speaker 9: could start to iron some things out. But I mean,
- 13:33Speaker 9: this group's been super open. It's been a lot of
- 13:36Speaker 9: good conversations, so I feel like it's we've done some
- 13:40Speaker 9: good things so far.
- 13:41Speaker 4: How long does it take you to learn the staff
- 13:43Speaker 4: and what they're looking for out of you? How long
- 13:45Speaker 4: does that take as a player?
- 13:47Speaker 9: Honestly, not too long. I feel like a couple of
- 13:50Speaker 9: conversations here and there and you can kind of get
- 13:53Speaker 9: a good idea. And obviously beginning of spring there's a
- 13:56Speaker 9: good amount of meetings, so you kind of get a
- 13:58Speaker 9: good gist of how they want to go about things
- 14:01Speaker 9: during that too.
- 14:02Speaker 7: So what are what are some goals for you? Can
- 14:06Speaker 7: you tell us what the goals for this season are
- 14:08Speaker 7: offensively or even defensively because you kind of hit on
- 14:11Speaker 7: it a little bit with the defense.
- 14:14Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, I just think I want to I
- 14:16Speaker 9: want to stay healthy the whole year played. I want
- 14:19Speaker 9: to play every game if that's possible. And I mean
- 14:22Speaker 9: I feel like this all season I've been working with
- 14:24Speaker 9: the training staff and I feel like, I put some
- 14:27Speaker 9: good work in. I feel like my buddy's in a
- 14:29Speaker 9: good spot to do so so well, they let you play.
- 14:32Speaker 4: One sixty two because we don't we don't believe in
- 14:34Speaker 4: load manager. This ain't the NBA now, no, no, if
- 14:36Speaker 4: you can play two games in a row.
- 14:37Speaker 9: Actually, I told him if I'm healthy and I can play,
- 14:42Speaker 9: I want to be in the lineup.
- 14:43Speaker 7: So how did you feel at the end of the
- 14:45Speaker 7: year last year, Because sometimes you know, this is your
- 14:48Speaker 7: first actual full season in the big leagues this past year,
- 14:52Speaker 7: how did you feel at the end of the year.
- 14:53Speaker 7: Were you like, oh, yeah, I was good, I'm fine,
- 14:56Speaker 7: or was it like coming down to stretch, we got
- 14:59Speaker 7: a little tired.
- 15:01Speaker 9: Yeah. I mean there's definitely some some games or some
- 15:04Speaker 9: weeks where you don't feel great, but you know, I
- 15:07Speaker 9: feel like everyone's kind of kind of fighting that battle
- 15:09Speaker 9: in the league too, So I mean I felt pretty good, honestly.
- 15:13Speaker 9: Like there's some spots where I was I was like,
- 15:16Speaker 9: who like it kind of hit me a little bit,
- 15:18Speaker 9: but then I feel like you get a second win
- 15:20Speaker 9: and at other points during the year.
- 15:22Speaker 1: So hey, James, how do you think the league was
- 15:26Speaker 1: attacking you last year? And you know, how did it change?
- 15:29Speaker 1: Like what did you study? Do you do that over
- 15:31Speaker 1: the offseason? You know, even for a fan like me
- 15:34Speaker 1: looking at the basic right, this guy has a lot
- 15:36Speaker 1: of opposite field pop. Maybe they're going to be a
- 15:38Speaker 1: little more careful on the outside. What did you see?
- 15:42Speaker 9: Oh? Yeah, I mean I feel like it's sort of
- 15:44Speaker 9: individual to each pitcher. And I mean I think once
- 15:47Speaker 9: you start facing teams in certain arms more and more
- 15:50Speaker 9: you kind of can formulate plans against each guys. But
- 15:54Speaker 9: I feel like it's always kind of that cat and mouse.
- 15:56Speaker 9: But I feel like for me, the biggest part is
- 15:59Speaker 9: just kind of trolling the edges of the zone and
- 16:01Speaker 9: just just waiting for my mistake and just being ready
- 16:04Speaker 9: for that.
- 16:05Speaker 7: Do you feel like you're a baseball junkie? Do you
- 16:07Speaker 7: feel like you're somebody that's like, I'm just gonna give
- 16:10Speaker 7: take all the information when we get them to plane
- 16:12Speaker 7: after a day game, I'm gonna watch a game afterwards.
- 16:15Speaker 7: Or are you able to step back and do other things?
- 16:19Speaker 4: No.
- 16:20Speaker 9: I think that's that's one thing I kind of had
- 16:22Speaker 9: to learn throughout the minor leagues. I mean, it's it's
- 16:24Speaker 9: it's a hard game, so you don't want to try
- 16:28Speaker 9: and eat yourself up over it. Like I think it's
- 16:30Speaker 9: just good to take a step back. You know, obviously
- 16:33Speaker 9: still gotta go over what happened, what you did well,
- 16:36Speaker 9: you what you could have done better, and kind of
- 16:39Speaker 9: decompress that way, and then once once you're done with that,
- 16:42Speaker 9: sort of just move on and just be be a
- 16:45Speaker 9: person after that. I mean, I feel like that's a
- 16:48Speaker 9: big part of balancing the ups and downs of baseball.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Hey, James, I think you're the perfect person to ask
- 16:56Speaker 1: this too. So you're still a very young player in
- 16:59Speaker 1: the sport, but you're one of the big guys on
- 17:01Speaker 1: this team. So now we all of a sudden have
- 17:04Speaker 1: this new wrinkle added to the mix, the ABS challenge system.
- 17:09Speaker 1: It is partially created for moments like ninth inning. You're
- 17:13Speaker 1: up right and there's dudes on and you have a
- 17:16Speaker 1: chance with one swing to win the game. So my
- 17:18Speaker 1: question to you is, as a pretty humble rising star
- 17:22Speaker 1: into sport, do you recognize that those challenges are getting
- 17:26Speaker 1: saved for you, Like they're going to want you to
- 17:28Speaker 1: use that in those spots, right, And sometimes they might
- 17:31Speaker 1: want the nine hitter on the team to not challenge
- 17:34Speaker 1: something in the third inning because they want James Wood
- 17:36Speaker 1: to be able to challenge a three to two pitch
- 17:38Speaker 1: that or a two to two pitch whatever that he
- 17:41Speaker 1: disagreed with that gets them to three to two, that
- 17:42Speaker 1: gets them to that home run in the eighth.
- 17:46Speaker 9: Uh. I mean yeah, I mean I kind of got
- 17:49Speaker 9: I got the chance of experimenting within TRIAA, and it
- 17:54Speaker 9: wasn't very good at it. Then I think the thing
- 17:55Speaker 9: when I got right and I challenged on accident, I
- 18:00Speaker 9: mean before before I get to get to that point,
- 18:03Speaker 9: I'm gonna have to practice it a little bit and
- 18:06Speaker 9: try and try and improve my my average.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Feel bad when you do the like for the umpire.
- 18:12Speaker 4: You know, the umpire doing his best.
- 18:14Speaker 5: And everyone has to watch and then he fails missering.
- 18:18Speaker 4: I mean, we all make mistakes.
- 18:20Speaker 9: So I mean sometimes I gotta swing out a curveball
- 18:25Speaker 9: in the dirt and look at myself on the big screen.
- 18:27Speaker 5: So do you ever ever have you seen some of
- 18:31Speaker 5: the games that have happened, were five six challenges in
- 18:34Speaker 5: the first couple of each of these umpires.
- 18:35Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's tough.
- 18:37Speaker 9: I always I always feel bad too, when it's like
- 18:40Speaker 9: when three of them are like missing.
- 18:41Speaker 4: By about this much of an inch.
- 18:44Speaker 9: Yeah, Like I think some of some of the guys,
- 18:46Speaker 9: like there was one pitch and it was it was
- 18:49Speaker 9: during spring and like it was either like it was
- 18:52Speaker 9: one of those where it was like a tenth of
- 18:54Speaker 9: an inch and like the dude the I'm kind of
- 18:56Speaker 9: just laughed it off. So, I mean, I asked him,
- 18:59Speaker 9: I was like, don't they don't docu that much for
- 19:01Speaker 9: missing that todays? So I mean, I think there's some
- 19:04Speaker 9: calls where it's like it's tough for them, But I
- 19:08Speaker 9: mean other times, I feel like.
- 19:10Speaker 4: How the guy knows that it's that it's a tenth
- 19:12Speaker 4: of an inch to play?
- 19:13Speaker 9: Yeah, I think sometimes I'm just hoping.
- 19:17Speaker 7: Who would you say you spend the most time with,
- 19:19Speaker 7: whether it's off the field or texting in the off season.
- 19:22Speaker 6: On the current roster.
- 19:27Speaker 4: I don't know. I mean I feel like.
- 19:30Speaker 9: I feel like in the locker room, I feel like
- 19:33Speaker 9: we all kind of chop it up a good amount.
- 19:36Speaker 9: Like I feel like the position player group we got,
- 19:38Speaker 9: I feel like we kind of mets around with each
- 19:41Speaker 9: other a lot of it's a whole bunch of different personalities,
- 19:44Speaker 9: Like I know last year, a lot of for most
- 19:46Speaker 9: of the Year was Jacob Young Dylan Cruise, and I
- 19:50Speaker 9: see him in CJ. So, I mean we we'd chop
- 19:54Speaker 9: it up with those. Those are most of the guys
- 19:56Speaker 9: that are there for most of the years. So, I mean,
- 19:58Speaker 9: I feel like we've got a good drink you're living with.
- 20:00Speaker 9: Here's a roommate training, t J.
- 20:01Speaker 5: White.
- 20:02Speaker 9: He's a minor league guy. I played with him in Haya,
- 20:04Speaker 9: So who would give Oh, I mean we just kicking
- 20:10Speaker 9: watch TV gaming. Yeah, yeah, I get on the six
- 20:14Speaker 9: a little bit.
- 20:15Speaker 6: I feel like that.
- 20:16Speaker 9: That's kind of where I'm I'm locked in out during spring.
- 20:18Speaker 9: I'm on the game a bunch.
- 20:19Speaker 4: You're a Rocket League craft as a Rocket.
- 20:21Speaker 9: Leaguer really yeah, No, I'm not that that game. That's
- 20:24Speaker 9: a tough game. Yeah, Like if you're good at that game,
- 20:27Speaker 9: like you got my respect, that's a tough game.
- 20:31Speaker 6: Who do you?
- 20:32Speaker 3: Who do you?
- 20:33Speaker 7: Who would you say you give the hardest time to
- 20:35Speaker 7: of that crew that you just said, you said you
- 20:37Speaker 7: guys chop it up in the clubhouse like it's a
- 20:39Speaker 7: rain delay. Who would you say, you guys just start
- 20:42Speaker 7: needling the most.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Uh, I don't know. I feel like it rotates.
- 20:48Speaker 9: I mean, I feel like, I feel like Jy wears
- 20:50Speaker 9: it a lot, but I mean it CJ might get
- 20:54Speaker 9: might wear it a little bit. I mean it's it's
- 20:56Speaker 9: like a rotating table.
- 20:58Speaker 6: What about for you?
- 21:01Speaker 4: I don't catch it too much.
- 21:02Speaker 5: But he's bigger than everybody crowds and who's gonna say anything,
- 21:07Speaker 5: so just grab him by their ear and carry.
- 21:10Speaker 7: So that's when the that's when the little chihuahuah comes
- 21:13Speaker 7: around and they start barking at the big dog.
- 21:15Speaker 6: That's what happens, Like they start who's that guy?
- 21:18Speaker 7: Who's that guy that's always just biting at your heels
- 21:21Speaker 7: like and you're like, man, get away.
- 21:25Speaker 9: I mean no, it's definitely Chiuha's huh So he's probably
- 21:28Speaker 9: the guy parking.
- 21:29Speaker 1: At That's good. Well, uh James. We appreciate the time, man,
- 21:35Speaker 1: awesome to talk to you.
- 21:36Speaker 8: Good luck. The rest is spring and we'll catch it
- 21:39Speaker 8: during the season.
- 21:40Speaker 9: Appreciate you guys.
- 21:41Speaker 5: Thank you. All right.
- 21:43Speaker 1: We're sitting down now with Kid Kobali. We're live at
- 21:45Speaker 1: Nationals camp. Kid, great to have you on here. Thank
- 21:47Speaker 1: you for the time. And how's camp going for you?
- 21:50Speaker 1: How you feeling, how's everything looking? Your name has popped
- 21:52Speaker 1: up multiple times I'll tell you from others that we've
- 21:55Speaker 1: spoken to that things look like they're coming out really
- 21:58Speaker 1: well out.
- 21:58Speaker 10: Of the hand.
- 22:00Speaker 11: Yeah, I appreciate you all having me on cam spin
- 22:03Speaker 11: great and a lot of new faces. I'm gonna feels fresh, exciting,
- 22:08Speaker 11: and I love the talent that we got here. I
- 22:10Speaker 11: love culture that's being put in place, and I'm pumped
- 22:14Speaker 11: to get going.
- 22:14Speaker 5: What are we doing? Let's talk? What do we got?
- 22:17Speaker 5: Where do we go? And the bar Raleigh fingers?
- 22:19Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean you just said it and you do it.
- 22:21Speaker 11: This is inspired by Raleigh. So we're gonna we're gonna
- 22:25Speaker 11: rock with it. We'll see how it goes, hopefully performs.
- 22:27Speaker 5: Well, you have the flax, see you put it? Oh yeah?
- 22:30Speaker 5: How long does it take?
- 22:31Speaker 10: Not very long?
- 22:32Speaker 11: I mean I've been doing it, so I really just
- 22:35Speaker 11: started curling before camp. But once you start curling a
- 22:38Speaker 11: little bit more, it gets trained. So I'm waking up
- 22:41Speaker 11: and it's like it's ready to be curled.
- 22:43Speaker 5: You train your mustache.
- 22:45Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, it's a it's a whole training process.
- 22:49Speaker 5: It's a lot.
- 22:51Speaker 10: I'll submit, We're committed to it.
- 22:54Speaker 5: I'll commit it.
- 22:54Speaker 7: Because baseball players fans are listening. They want to know
- 22:58Speaker 7: what baseball players are thinking, like, is it one start?
- 23:03Speaker 7: Is it one great start and you're good for like
- 23:06Speaker 7: three more starts? Is it one eh start?
- 23:11Speaker 10: We'll see. I don't know.
- 23:12Speaker 11: We're gonna play it by year as the season goes on.
- 23:16Speaker 11: My wife doesn't really like it, but I told her
- 23:18Speaker 11: she has to live with it for a little bit.
- 23:19Speaker 5: So that was gonna be my next Yeah, no, no,
- 23:23Speaker 5: and be gone one bad story. Yeah, it can be
- 23:25Speaker 5: gone one bad no way. No, it'll wake up and
- 23:29Speaker 5: his wife will have cut it when he sleeped it.
- 23:31Speaker 5: He won't even know.
- 23:32Speaker 7: It'll look good. It'll look good on an All Star poster.
- 23:35Speaker 7: How about that?
- 23:37Speaker 10: I would like that. That'd be nice.
- 23:39Speaker 11: It's got no point where I'm talking to people and
- 23:40Speaker 11: I could just see their eyes moving down.
- 23:42Speaker 10: Looks like they're looking at my lips.
- 23:44Speaker 5: Don't eyes up here? Yeah I go, I've go yeah
- 23:48Speaker 5: about this region right here.
- 23:50Speaker 10: Yeah, keep your eyes up.
- 23:51Speaker 5: It's hard not to look at it.
- 23:53Speaker 10: Yeah, I thought you do it kind of sols.
- 23:55Speaker 5: Yeah, you're like trying to look at your eyes. But
- 23:57Speaker 5: I'm just infatuated with the curl.
- 24:00Speaker 10: Yeah. Yeah, we'll see what happens.
- 24:02Speaker 5: Okay, all right, you going a hundred again, what's the truth?
- 24:05Speaker 5: Right around at on the v We're right around there
- 24:07Speaker 5: because you hit a hundred last year, right, Yeah, what
- 24:10Speaker 5: they put in your arm when they redid it.
- 24:13Speaker 11: I was up to the hundred before surgery, so it's
- 24:16Speaker 11: been there. We just needed to take the bronx forse
- 24:19Speaker 11: you know.
- 24:19Speaker 5: So what what's what's the spring? Looking? Any new pitches?
- 24:23Speaker 5: We should be talking about it. Yeah, I'm like a
- 24:25Speaker 5: cutter splitter ball.
- 24:26Speaker 11: Uh No, I wish, but we went with a sweeper
- 24:30Speaker 11: this year, so I was a reverse split guy last year.
- 24:33Speaker 11: Handle left these well, brit these not as well as
- 24:37Speaker 11: I did lefties, and we needed something to expand the
- 24:39Speaker 11: zone left with my curveballs in the north and south.
- 24:44Speaker 11: I got a change up a sinker, so everything's going
- 24:46Speaker 11: into him, and we needed something horizontally that can get
- 24:49Speaker 11: away from a barrel and uh over the off season.
- 24:53Speaker 11: Pretty early on in the off season, Simon and Doolittle
- 24:56Speaker 11: got on a zoom call with me and just stuck
- 24:58Speaker 11: the ball up the screen like this as a grip
- 25:00Speaker 11: you're gonna throw.
- 25:01Speaker 10: I want you to throw it exactly like your curveball.
- 25:05Speaker 11: And they told me it's gonna be pretty pretty bad
- 25:07Speaker 11: at the beginning, because it was a seam shift pitch
- 25:10Speaker 11: where if you're not with good intent, it's not gonna
- 25:14Speaker 11: do what you want.
- 25:14Speaker 10: So I started throwing it this offseason like, man, I
- 25:17Speaker 10: just need to throw a slider, Like this is bad.
- 25:20Speaker 11: And then as I got going, started ripping it harder
- 25:23Speaker 11: and harder, we saw the numbers start to creat more.
- 25:25Speaker 10: And you know, it's a depthy pitch.
- 25:28Speaker 11: I'm throwing it just like my curveball, but we're getting
- 25:31Speaker 11: it's kind of a flip flop on the numbers horizontally
- 25:34Speaker 11: to like if it's fifteen and six for my twelve six,
- 25:38Speaker 11: it'll be like eight to ten with fifteen going that way.
- 25:44Speaker 5: So no, I did what your cog.
- 25:45Speaker 10: Sorry, yeah, I thought you would.
- 25:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I've put it before. We have all that, right.
- 25:51Speaker 5: We just actually feel like we're talking about numbers on
- 25:53Speaker 5: the yeah.
- 25:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:55Speaker 10: So we're just trying to get some of the turning left.
- 25:57Speaker 5: Yeah, like you want to be a nastace, just turn yeah,
- 26:00Speaker 5: just keep turning left, baby, you know, I do a
- 26:03Speaker 5: little way through path. Yeah, I mean, but he's the
- 26:05Speaker 5: one beaching you and break the ball, and he just
- 26:08Speaker 5: threw heater at Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 10: Yeah, he's developed.
- 26:10Speaker 5: Did you ever see him? You ever seen him pitch?
- 26:12Speaker 8: Oh?
- 26:12Speaker 5: Yeah like this? Oh yeah?
- 26:14Speaker 11: We uh we rehab together whenever he was here, I
- 26:18Speaker 11: was here down here, reabit, so I spent a lot
- 26:20Speaker 11: of time.
- 26:20Speaker 10: Together before he was a coach.
- 26:23Speaker 7: What does that strain feel like, because it's for what
- 26:26Speaker 7: you said, the sweeper is more of an intent pitch.
- 26:29Speaker 7: Do you feel any extra strain when you started really
- 26:32Speaker 7: ripping on it here now that we're harsh way part
- 26:35Speaker 7: of the way into spring.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Not at all.
- 26:37Speaker 11: It's not like a strain thing because I'm throwing it
- 26:39Speaker 11: exactly like I do my curveball. I'm telling you, like
- 26:42Speaker 11: the exact same. So whenever I throw it, the exact
- 26:44Speaker 11: same because it is staying up a little bit higher
- 26:47Speaker 11: and seeing the north south, I have to think about
- 26:50Speaker 11: burying it, and then it stays right at the bottom
- 26:52Speaker 11: of the zone. So there's no difference in like manipulating
- 26:57Speaker 11: my hand trying to sweep around it. I'm not throwing
- 27:01Speaker 11: like a vert sweeper. It's still depthy. It's like we're
- 27:04Speaker 11: calling a turbo slurve here. And because it's been eighty
- 27:08Speaker 11: five eighty seven, so the strain is the same. It
- 27:11Speaker 11: feels good on my arm and we've gotten some whiff
- 27:14Speaker 11: on it from righty, so we're happy about it.
- 27:17Speaker 5: Can you check the numbers every pitch and the wullfen
- 27:19Speaker 5: and then when you're on your start and do you
- 27:21Speaker 5: get them between innings?
- 27:23Speaker 10: No? No, I don't really look the numbers a whole lot.
- 27:26Speaker 10: I let them explain for ten minutes about a Well,
- 27:28Speaker 10: I understand what though coaches are explaining to me. You
- 27:31Speaker 10: got to understand what they're talking about. So I'm not
- 27:34Speaker 10: a guy that's gonna like throw a pitch.
- 27:36Speaker 11: Look see, I mean if you're working on something and
- 27:39Speaker 11: I'm not chasing certain numbers, I'm chasing a shape with
- 27:42Speaker 11: my eyes that.
- 27:43Speaker 10: I think it's gonna be effected to a hitter. So
- 27:45Speaker 10: and those guys know a lot more than I do,
- 27:47Speaker 10: and they can explain it to me.
- 27:50Speaker 5: All right. So you seem like somebody that competes.
- 27:53Speaker 7: Did you compete in the live at bats against your
- 27:55Speaker 7: teammates this spring?
- 27:58Speaker 11: Yeah, on a per san Man trying to get to
- 28:01Speaker 11: get body and do you get And I got a
- 28:04Speaker 11: call up with that smack too. I'm not necessarily talking smack,
- 28:09Speaker 11: but I want them competing at the same level.
- 28:10Speaker 10: I am.
- 28:11Speaker 11: I want to bring that energy to the backfield. I
- 28:13Speaker 11: don't really care who's in the stands or whatever. Like,
- 28:16Speaker 11: once I get the ball, it could be in my backyard.
- 28:18Speaker 11: I'm trying to get you out.
- 28:19Speaker 5: So James Wood, you punch him out your right, that's right,
- 28:22Speaker 5: that's right. I got you.
- 28:23Speaker 10: We hit it. Yeah, I got you. He's a hard,
- 28:26Speaker 10: hard guy to punch out.
- 28:27Speaker 5: That's so hard to hard. Got to keep him in
- 28:30Speaker 5: the yard.
- 28:30Speaker 10: Yeah, that's right.
- 28:31Speaker 5: But if he gets you, though, can you talk about.
- 28:34Speaker 10: I mean, yeah, I don't say you got me? Why not?
- 28:38Speaker 11: Some people have with when you were playing with you,
- 28:40Speaker 11: would you let you guys know which if you got him?
- 28:42Speaker 5: You do know a long long you know anything about that?
- 28:44Speaker 5: I do know I probably, yes, exactly more than more
- 28:50Speaker 5: than Yeah. So what's the sweeper? I know you're talking
- 28:53Speaker 5: about sweeper, you're talking about change. If you're talking about
- 28:55Speaker 5: trying to get it to go lest how do you
- 28:57Speaker 5: incorporate that without overused without falling in love with sweet?
- 29:02Speaker 11: No, that's a hard thing to navigate because early on
- 29:05Speaker 11: in spring, whenever you got a new toy, you're in
- 29:08Speaker 11: love with like, I'm like, man, when can.
- 29:10Speaker 10: I use this and you're trying to see spots that
- 29:12Speaker 10: you can use it.
- 29:13Speaker 11: And that's a conversation that we've been having because there
- 29:16Speaker 11: are moments where I go to my pitch, the curve ball,
- 29:19Speaker 11: and I chosen to throw the sweeper over it, just
- 29:21Speaker 11: because I'm kind of falling in love with this new toy,
- 29:24Speaker 11: trying to see the spots that I can go pick
- 29:26Speaker 11: with it. So just trying to find that balance, and
- 29:29Speaker 11: obviously these guys are dialed in on it, and we're
- 29:33Speaker 11: just gonna try to pick our right spots with it.
- 29:35Speaker 7: You had forty eight innings last year. You talked about
- 29:37Speaker 7: conversations with the organization. Did they talk to you about
- 29:41Speaker 7: an innings limit? You're always hearing it with younger pitchers,
- 29:44Speaker 7: guys that are now coming to their first full season
- 29:48Speaker 7: after an injury.
- 29:49Speaker 5: Did they talk to you about it.
- 29:53Speaker 6: No.
- 29:54Speaker 11: I got two one hundred and twenty innings last year
- 29:56Speaker 11: over the course of the season.
- 29:57Speaker 10: Through Triple A and the big leagues. I would like
- 30:02Speaker 10: to go get one to eighty.
- 30:04Speaker 11: Let it ride, kind of make thirty two starts go
- 30:07Speaker 11: compete every everything year.
- 30:08Speaker 5: Is that the natural progression? Would you say you had
- 30:10Speaker 5: one twenty last year and then jumped to one eight hault.
- 30:13Speaker 11: Yeah, it was originally supposed to be around one hundred,
- 30:16Speaker 11: and I felt great. At the end of the season,
- 30:18Speaker 11: I asked for the ball and they let me go
- 30:20Speaker 11: five each, five innings.
- 30:22Speaker 10: For five starts.
- 30:23Speaker 5: You're on the Garrett crocheted for out program. Yeah, and
- 30:26Speaker 5: then he went out.
- 30:27Speaker 10: Last year and throw one hundred and eighty.
- 30:28Speaker 5: Almost wanted to say young, right, so that next for you.
- 30:31Speaker 10: I would love that. I mean, that's that's why I work.
- 30:34Speaker 10: I want to go. I mean, if you're doing that,
- 30:36Speaker 10: you're helping your team. So okay, I agree.
- 30:39Speaker 5: Starters that take the ball everything, they are so valuable
- 30:43Speaker 5: in this game that you can do it and make
- 30:45Speaker 5: thirty two stars no One. Tip my cap to you
- 30:47Speaker 5: and say way to go, sir.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Hey, okay, this is great man. Thank you for joining us.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Appreciate it doing here.
- 30:54Speaker 5: Here he goes. You know, he said he likes to
- 30:56Speaker 5: talk trash, so I get to talk a little trash.
- 30:58Speaker 10: Jo.
- 30:59Speaker 5: So he went to bigs Be High School, Oklahoma. My
- 31:02Speaker 5: son last year played Bixby High School. They came onto
- 31:05Speaker 5: the field crowds you like this. They had this boom
- 31:08Speaker 5: box and they had this big bus. We were pending, right,
- 31:11Speaker 5: they had this whole thing, and they were out in
- 31:13Speaker 5: the outfield stretching, and our teams out there, you know,
- 31:16Speaker 5: our little tall, small team from Florida, and they were
- 31:19Speaker 5: barking at them the whole time, and they're like, you know,
- 31:21Speaker 5: we're the big dogs in this yard, We're the big guy.
- 31:23Speaker 5: They're all barking at our team. And then TFA went
- 31:26Speaker 5: out whooped their ass. And then they're like, you ain't
- 31:27Speaker 5: barking out, bitch. So that's my tragic you can go. Yeah,
- 31:32Speaker 5: we were like that when I was live. Still, I
- 31:34Speaker 5: promise you that I can't believe that they're doing. They're barking.
- 31:38Speaker 5: They were barking at boom boxing. Yes, they had a
- 31:41Speaker 5: big boom box and we got to clean that out.
- 31:42Speaker 10: Bixby that that's tough.
- 31:48Speaker 1: They might go a phone call from CAID. Maybe maybe
- 31:51Speaker 1: if something called lean it up, clean it up. Well, okay,
- 31:55Speaker 1: now I can thank you. Appreciate the time. Man, keep
- 31:58Speaker 1: doing your thing in spring. We're watching we're following black.
- 32:01Speaker 10: Yes, sir, I appreciate y'all. Thank you.
- 32:09Speaker 5: M
