- 3:25Speaker 4: in now our good friend Taylor gew from the Clay Center.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Good morning, and welcome to the show.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Good morning, Thanks for having me, Thank.
- 3:32Speaker 4: You for being here. You always come here with big
- 3:34Speaker 4: news for us. And of course last time you hear
- 3:37Speaker 4: you dropped the announcement here on the show that Chicago
- 3:40Speaker 4: was coming in concert, and we'll get to that coming
- 3:43Speaker 4: up a little bit later on. Appreciate that. But you're
- 3:45Speaker 4: here now, got the drum rolls and all the stuff
- 3:48Speaker 4: go because you have got a big announcement about a
- 3:50Speaker 4: big show that families are going to love.
- 3:53Speaker 6: Yep, whether you've got younger ones at home, grandkids, nieces
- 3:56Speaker 6: and nephews, or you're a kid at heart, you will
- 3:59Speaker 6: be three and over the moon to know that this
- 4:02Speaker 6: summer we are bringing Blue Eat back to Charleston for
- 4:06Speaker 6: two nights July twenty eighth and twenty ninth, both.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Shows at six pm. It's the running show that they've had.
- 4:15Speaker 6: They've brought in new elements though, and it's always me
- 4:18Speaker 6: having a young one. We watch Blue Ee every morning
- 4:21Speaker 6: and read a blue book every night we're going to sleep.
- 4:23Speaker 5: So it's gonna be one of.
- 4:24Speaker 6: Those shows that definitely sells quick and the kids are
- 4:27Speaker 6: going to love.
- 4:28Speaker 4: And one of the dates again.
- 4:30Speaker 5: July twenty eighth and twenty ninth.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Okay, so explain this whole because again I don't have kids,
- 4:35Speaker 4: and if I got on here and I talked about
- 4:37Speaker 4: how great Blue he was, people would think it was
- 4:39Speaker 4: just weird. Okay, all right, But I know in talking
- 4:41Speaker 4: to Dale Cooper, you know, the boss, that he's got
- 4:45Speaker 4: a young one and they're all about So explain the
- 4:47Speaker 4: whole blue phenomenon to those of us that don't know,
- 4:50Speaker 4: I think what.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Truly makes it special is that it provides such a
- 4:53Speaker 6: realistic look at what it's like to be a kid
- 4:56Speaker 6: as well as to be a parent, and it does
- 4:59Speaker 6: it in such a fun and interactive way. And I
- 5:02Speaker 6: mean I know that I love and I'm always inspired,
- 5:04Speaker 6: but by how the parents and Bluie are interacting with
- 5:08Speaker 6: their kids, how they get really involved into the imagination
- 5:11Speaker 6: and the creativity. I mean, even something as simple as
- 5:15Speaker 6: you know, playing the game keep Yuppie where you have
- 5:17Speaker 6: a balloon and you just have to keep it in
- 5:18Speaker 6: the air and you know, you go out of your
- 5:20Speaker 6: way and make obstacles.
- 5:21Speaker 5: It's just it makes the.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Simple things feel big and grand and fun, and it's
- 5:27Speaker 6: just it's truly magical.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Now, how long has Blue been around.
- 5:31Speaker 5: Well, Blue's been around for quite a few years now.
- 5:33Speaker 6: I mean one of the things that was special is
- 5:35Speaker 6: I believe that it started to come out during COVID.
- 5:39Speaker 6: It was a family down in Australia who they were
- 5:43Speaker 6: in the house with their kids and you know, we're like,
- 5:46Speaker 6: what can we do? And so they came up with
- 5:48Speaker 6: this concept of Blue and it has really taken off.
- 5:51Speaker 6: It's probably the number one show on Disney.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Is that where it is? I was going to ask
- 5:55Speaker 4: you this. It is on Disney, but I have seen
- 5:56Speaker 4: a lot of the merchandise, because you know, you can't
- 5:59Speaker 4: be a true bona fide kids star kids, you know,
- 6:02Speaker 4: cartoon or whatever if you don't have the merchandise and
- 6:04Speaker 4: you walk into your local store, you see blue stuff there.
- 6:06Speaker 4: I do know that much.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Oh yeah, Blue is everywhere. I can confirm.
- 6:10Speaker 6: I have three different variation sizes of blue stuffed animals
- 6:13Speaker 6: in my house that talk and sing and.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Well it's a good thing to have kids.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Oh those are mine.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Okay, all right, So Bluey's come in July twenty eighth
- 6:23Speaker 4: and twenty nine nine, and tickets will go on sale.
- 6:25Speaker 6: Tickets will go on sale to Clay and Remembers on
- 6:27Speaker 6: Wednesday at ten am and then on Friday to the
- 6:30Speaker 6: public at ten am.
- 6:31Speaker 4: And this is going to be a huge, huge, So
- 6:32Speaker 4: how many times has Blue you been here?
- 6:34Speaker 6: Last time we had Blue was in fall of twenty
- 6:36Speaker 6: twenty four, and the tickets for that show sold out
- 6:39Speaker 6: in about three or four days.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Okay, we were.
- 6:42Speaker 6: Able to get them back for two nights, so we
- 6:44Speaker 6: can get as many families in as possible.
- 6:45Speaker 4: So plan on getting there and getting your tickets again
- 6:48Speaker 4: when they go on sale. All right, So last time
- 6:50Speaker 4: you're here, we talked about the Chicago show. I know
- 6:53Speaker 4: that a couple of our sister stations here have been
- 6:55Speaker 4: give it away tickets to that tickets are still going
- 6:58Speaker 4: really really well for that, I understand.
- 7:00Speaker 6: Yeah, we have been moving out the ying yang with
- 7:04Speaker 6: ticket sales for Chicago. I can tell you that we're,
- 7:07Speaker 6: you know, in that last stretch. You know, I'd say
- 7:10Speaker 6: easily two thirds of the tickets are sold, which you know,
- 7:12Speaker 6: having tickets go on sale and Bianzi on the first
- 7:14Speaker 6: two weeks and having that type of movement is phenomenal.
- 7:17Speaker 6: We expect to be a sold out show. So it's
- 7:19Speaker 6: one of those that definitely want to get your tickets
- 7:22Speaker 6: sooner rather than later. And I know they have a
- 7:24Speaker 6: lot of VIP options, and you know, some VIP shows
- 7:27Speaker 6: are you know, simple meet and greets or you get
- 7:28Speaker 6: a picture, but the VIPs for Chicago are extremely extensive
- 7:32Speaker 6: and there's very few of those left. So if that's
- 7:33Speaker 6: something that you are considering, I would definitely make that
- 7:35Speaker 6: decision sooner rather than later.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Talking with Taylor gew again from Clay Center of Dave
- 7:39Speaker 4: Allen Show and five ATY Live, brought to you in
- 7:40Speaker 4: part by your hometown baseball team, The Charles The Dirty
- 7:43Speaker 4: Birds getting ready for the upcoming season, Your season tickets,
- 7:45Speaker 4: merchandise and more waiting for you at Dirtybirds Baseball dot com.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Of course, it is spring break, I think understand for
- 7:51Speaker 4: students in Kanawa County this week. Anything going on at
- 7:54Speaker 4: Clay Center.
- 7:55Speaker 6: For yes, Yes, we've got lots of special activities. One
- 7:57Speaker 6: of the ones that's probably my favorite is down on
- 8:00Speaker 6: our lower level in the back room of mind.
- 8:02Speaker 5: Tell me this space called maker Space.
- 8:05Speaker 6: We've got all these hands on activities and three D printing,
- 8:07Speaker 6: And one of the things we're doing is we have
- 8:10Speaker 6: these three D printed three D dinosaurs, so you.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Can make this.
- 8:14Speaker 6: It's about a twelve inch by twelve inch tarodactyl that
- 8:18Speaker 6: you can hang from your ceiling. You can do three
- 8:21Speaker 6: printed ornaments, laser cutting, a lot of really really cool
- 8:25Speaker 6: hands on things and that's only going to be happening
- 8:27Speaker 6: this week for spring break. So if that's something if
- 8:29Speaker 6: you're looking for something fun to do, a nice little
- 8:31Speaker 6: take home, it's definitely something you should consider.
- 8:33Speaker 4: We were talking about Blue. You had a text here Taylor.
- 8:36Speaker 4: It said Dollar Tree has lots of blue and Bingo
- 8:38Speaker 4: theme products, not just toys, but kitchen and bath merchandise
- 8:41Speaker 4: as well, which just goes to show you the power
- 8:42Speaker 4: of blue. I guess right.
- 8:43Speaker 6: I mean I would be surprised if there's not bluey
- 8:46Speaker 6: laundry detergent and you know, bluey hair clips and blue shoes.
- 8:51Speaker 4: You know, if we can make money on it, and
- 8:53Speaker 4: you know my motto abs always be selling, So somebody,
- 8:56Speaker 4: somebody's going to be making a lot of money and
- 8:58Speaker 4: they already have been. What else do you got going on.
- 8:59Speaker 6: To clays Well, I can say that if you haven't
- 9:02Speaker 6: a chance to come and see our Wildcraft's Traveling Exhibit,
- 9:05Speaker 6: I would recommend you come. On Saturday, March twenty first,
- 9:09Speaker 6: we are going to be having an Ocean Family Fun Day,
- 9:11Speaker 6: so we're partnering once again with West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
- 9:14Speaker 6: They're going to be there giving out a lot of
- 9:16Speaker 6: Wildcrafts activities.
- 9:17Speaker 5: We're going to have a lot of ocean themed activities.
- 9:20Speaker 6: The event sponsor, which is Smart five to nine, is
- 9:22Speaker 6: going to be there providing a lot of educational resources,
- 9:25Speaker 6: so there is it's going to be a full jam
- 9:28Speaker 6: pack day with kids being able to do a lot
- 9:31Speaker 6: of crafts and activities.
- 9:32Speaker 4: All right. Now, there's always something going on at the
- 9:34Speaker 4: Clay Center. And now as we think you talk, we
- 9:36Speaker 4: talked about this last time you were here. Now that
- 9:38Speaker 4: we're starting to get out of the cold weather months,
- 9:40Speaker 4: at least to a certain extent, people are going to
- 9:43Speaker 4: want to get out. They're going to want to go somewhere.
- 9:45Speaker 4: I know a lot of families took advantage of stuff
- 9:48Speaker 4: that you had because of the winter, because you had
- 9:50Speaker 4: things that you could do indoors. But knowing the weather
- 9:51Speaker 4: warms up and we all know of me, people want
- 9:53Speaker 4: to get out and they want to go do stuff.
- 9:54Speaker 4: And there's always great stuff going on to the Clay Center.
- 9:56Speaker 6: Always fun things going on between Planetarium filmed and shows,
- 10:01Speaker 6: Discovery cards.
- 10:02Speaker 5: I mean, it's never end to get the Clay Center.
- 10:04Speaker 4: All right. So let's go back and recamp the big
- 10:06Speaker 4: announcement that you broke on this show. And I appreciate
- 10:09Speaker 4: that Blue is back by popular demand. July twenty eighth
- 10:12Speaker 4: and twenty ninth, tot Clay Center. Talk about it again.
- 10:14Speaker 6: That is right, twenty eighth and twenty ninth, Blue is
- 10:16Speaker 6: going to be coming Blue's big play. Both shows will
- 10:19Speaker 6: be at six pm, and just like we've done with
- 10:21Speaker 6: some of our last family focused shows, the Clay Center
- 10:24Speaker 6: will stay open prior to the show for those families
- 10:27Speaker 6: who have tickets, so you can come early, let your
- 10:29Speaker 6: kids run around in the museum, get a little energy
- 10:32Speaker 6: out before going in and taking your seats to take
- 10:34Speaker 6: in the spectacular show of Blue.
- 10:35Speaker 4: All right, Taylor, Taylor, do you from the Clay Center.
- 10:38Speaker 4: We'll have you on again real soon. Because every time
- 10:40Speaker 4: that you get in touch with us here, you say
- 10:41Speaker 4: I got a big announcement coming and you and you
- 10:43Speaker 4: always break it here first. I consider that to be
- 10:46Speaker 4: an honor. Thank you very much.
- 10:47Speaker 6: I'm happy to so, yeah, make sure you stay tuned.
- 10:49Speaker 6: March twenty fourth. I have a special announcement for those

- 15:15Speaker 10: Robert, good morning. It's it's a it's a long walk
- 15:18Speaker 10: from my studio to yours. Yes, yes, as we get old.
- 15:22Speaker 4: As we get old as we get Naomi Bays is
- 15:25Speaker 4: here as well for West the Roses West Side Neighborhood Association.
- 15:28Speaker 4: She had to sit in on a conversation between us
- 15:31Speaker 4: earlier when we were talking about what we watched as kids.
- 15:34Speaker 4: We were talking about they made the announcement that Blue
- 15:36Speaker 4: He's coming to the Clay Center, and of course I
- 15:38Speaker 4: had to. I mean, I've heard of Blue, but I
- 15:40Speaker 4: don't have kids, so it'd be really weird if I said, oh,
- 15:42Speaker 4: have you seen episode three?
- 15:45Speaker 10: I don't know, but the TVD commentary, yes, it's the best.
- 15:49Speaker 4: So what I did was is Rob and I were
- 15:52Speaker 4: talking about things we watched and growing up, and I
- 15:54Speaker 4: said I didn't even watch kids shows when I was
- 15:56Speaker 4: a kid and you and you looked at me and said,
- 15:58Speaker 4: Naomi went, what's wrong with you? But it's not. I
- 16:01Speaker 4: mean I was never what happened whatever the current thing.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Like I was a kid in the seventies, I did
- 16:06Speaker 4: not watch Sesame Street. I didn't watch an Electric Company
- 16:09Speaker 4: or I was aware of it. I was more interested
- 16:11Speaker 4: in watching the news. I was watching the news. I
- 16:14Speaker 4: was watching, but I was watching. I did watch a
- 16:17Speaker 4: lot of the classic sitcoms, you know which Some of
- 16:19Speaker 4: them weren't they were new at the time. But I
- 16:23Speaker 4: did like the Warner Brothers stuff, the Bugs, Money and
- 16:26Speaker 4: all that other because I mean, that's basically cartoons made
- 16:28Speaker 4: for adults anyway. They weren't made for kids. They were
- 16:30Speaker 4: made for adults exactly.
- 16:31Speaker 10: I think Naomi just stumbled across the title of your
- 16:33Speaker 10: upcoming memoir, What's wrong with You?
- 16:36Speaker 4: Do you know how many people have said that in
- 16:38Speaker 4: my fifty five years, including the woman I'm married to
- 16:41Speaker 4: on a daily basis. All right, Naomi, basis your why
- 16:44Speaker 4: said Neighborhood Asociation, Rob real, We're getting ready for dad
- 16:47Speaker 4: jokes coming up on the twenty first, first, right, and
- 16:51Speaker 4: give us the wins and the wares.
- 16:52Speaker 2: All right, we are having a dad joke comedy battle
- 16:55Speaker 2: to benefit the West Side Neighborhood Association. It'll be at
- 16:58Speaker 2: the Capitol Theater at one Summer Street, March twenty first,
- 17:02Speaker 2: Doors open at five, show begins at sick.
- 17:05Speaker 4: And you got this guy to be your MC, I understand.
- 17:07Speaker 2: We managed to snag him again for a second year.
- 17:10Speaker 2: It was crazy.
- 17:11Speaker 4: It was so much fun last year.
- 17:12Speaker 10: Yeah, I've been jokingly calling it the second almost annual
- 17:16Speaker 10: because we did it in June last year, and the
- 17:20Speaker 10: smart ladies who were in charge of this thing were like,
- 17:22Speaker 10: let's let's move it up to March and take advantage
- 17:24Speaker 10: of a better open date. And I'm like, I'm your
- 17:27Speaker 10: dancing chicken. Put me on this, put me on the stove,
- 17:29Speaker 10: turn on the heat. I'm good. But it's not been
- 17:32Speaker 10: quite a year. I had a couple of people ask me,
- 17:33Speaker 10: didn't y'all just do that? Well nine months ago, so
- 17:36Speaker 10: it's almost a.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Year, almost a year, but it's dad jokes.
- 17:40Speaker 4: Yeah are you Yeah? Well, tell you what do you do?
- 17:42Speaker 4: You have enough laughs in your life that you don't
- 17:44Speaker 4: need to come.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Oh, we need this.
- 17:46Speaker 4: I was talking to Taylor from the place a little
- 17:48Speaker 4: bit earlier and she said that. She said, I have
- 17:50Speaker 4: a dad and a stepdad. She said, so I've got
- 17:52Speaker 4: double the fun, so I could completely understand it. For
- 17:55Speaker 4: those that weren't there last year, don't know the way
- 17:57Speaker 4: this thing works now, and we explain the way that
- 17:59Speaker 4: old Dad Joke's competition works.
- 18:01Speaker 2: We take regular contestants off the streets. So if you
- 18:04Speaker 2: are interested in coming on stage and doing that, definitely
- 18:08Speaker 2: reach out to us. You don't have to be a dad.
- 18:10Speaker 2: It's just a vibe. I'll be able to tell the jokes.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Get on stage, we'll have we're changing it up a
- 18:15Speaker 2: little bit, so we'll have a couple of rounds, you know,
- 18:18Speaker 2: well you'll tell your jokes and at some point it'll
- 18:20Speaker 2: go head to head and we have a panel of
- 18:23Speaker 2: three judges. We have Logan and we have Woody and
- 18:27Speaker 2: we have Morgan Robinson.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Okay, good line up.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and then you know they'll also do the judging
- 18:33Speaker 2: and robill MC and corral all the chickens and make
- 18:38Speaker 2: it all better and.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it is a bit of hurting cat. So Robert,
- 18:42Speaker 4: you've done this again last year. So how does one
- 18:45Speaker 4: MC a dad jokes competition? What's what's what's it like
- 18:47Speaker 4: for you?
- 18:48Speaker 10: Very carefully, you know, they're they're the typical notes and
- 18:52Speaker 10: sponsors and that sort of thing. But it really is
- 18:54Speaker 10: a matter of trying to be trying to be trying
- 18:58Speaker 10: to be the glue, trying to be the trying to
- 19:01Speaker 10: be the broth.
- 19:02Speaker 4: I guess that keeps that stew going. I don't know.
- 19:06Speaker 4: I was on the analogy team in high school.
- 19:08Speaker 10: We were like, no, I got nothing, So yeah, it's
- 19:14Speaker 10: it's keep it moving, it's keep everybody in the right
- 19:17Speaker 10: place even beforehand. It's there are varying levels of what
- 19:21Speaker 10: I call stage comfort for these folks. We had some
- 19:24Speaker 10: folks who were like big deal musical theater and have
- 19:27Speaker 10: performed on stage their entire life, and we have folks
- 19:30Speaker 10: who the biggest crowd for which they've ever done comedy
- 19:34Speaker 10: is Thanksgiving dinner. And so it's kind of balancing that,
- 19:37Speaker 10: making sure everybody is comfortable with how things are going
- 19:40Speaker 10: to work with being on stage. Some of them it's
- 19:43Speaker 10: getting them to their mark. Some of them it's getting
- 19:45Speaker 10: them to obey the red light when it goes off,
- 19:48Speaker 10: because you know, stage time is stage time, and trying
- 19:51Speaker 10: to have some fun in between integrating the judges and
- 19:54Speaker 10: all that. I was kind of put on the spot
- 19:57Speaker 10: in our inaugural.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Because we had that tie.
- 20:01Speaker 10: Yeah, we had a we had a stone cold tie,
- 20:05Speaker 10: and even in the face off, we couldn't get anyone
- 20:08Speaker 10: to to blink as it were, And so I kind
- 20:11Speaker 10: of made a command decision on the stage in the
- 20:14Speaker 10: middle of everything, and we just declared it a tie,
- 20:16Speaker 10: and off we went and had a good time.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that was the one scenario that we did not.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Everything else.
- 20:24Speaker 2: I thought that there would be a clear winner. We
- 20:27Speaker 2: did not anticipate the ability to hold back last Okay,
- 20:31Speaker 2: So now who won last year? Oh I don't remember,
- 20:38Speaker 2: but they performed regularly with the alban theaters.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Okay, it was two of those folks. Okay, all right,
- 20:45Speaker 4: So now are they eligible to enter again or they
- 20:48Speaker 4: can come back.
- 20:48Speaker 2: And defend their title? Okay, we know that the second
- 20:51Speaker 2: runner up, Lynn, she's coming back.
- 20:54Speaker 4: So okay, I didn't know if it was like, you know,
- 20:56Speaker 4: once you want it, you can't wait.
- 20:58Speaker 2: You should defend your title.
- 21:00Speaker 10: Yeah, it's not Miss America or any what exactly what
- 21:03Speaker 10: exactly do they get?
- 21:05Speaker 2: Well, we got them a crown and a handmade snash,
- 21:10Speaker 2: and then we also we took trophies that may or
- 21:15Speaker 2: may not have been girls.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Sports and it's one of my favorite things.
- 21:19Speaker 2: And and out of clay, we made like little dad
- 21:23Speaker 2: joke things on it, like we put like a new
- 21:25Speaker 2: balance shoe on a baseball bat and stuff and just
- 21:29Speaker 2: like grill stuff. And then we spray painted them like
- 21:31Speaker 2: you know, gold, silver and bronze.
- 21:33Speaker 4: That's killer. That's what you should have. Ye, yes, because
- 21:36Speaker 4: you know every dad well, but every dad is like, well,
- 21:39Speaker 4: don't throw that away. Don't throw away that stick. I
- 21:41Speaker 4: can use that. I need that for something. So that's
- 21:43Speaker 4: what you did with these trophies.
- 21:45Speaker 10: And every dad is like, I got that in eighth grade,
- 21:47Speaker 10: JV whatever, I'm keeping that trophy.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Well, that's the funny thing is that when I go
- 21:51Speaker 2: to the the antique stores looking for trophies, I can
- 21:54Speaker 2: only find like girl sports trophies. I rarely find any
- 21:58Speaker 2: male trophies.
- 21:59Speaker 4: Like what we're doing, That's what's what you're doing. Right,
- 22:02Speaker 4: So how does the judging work? I mean, you said
- 22:03Speaker 4: you got Woody Woods from one of seven three to beat.
- 22:06Speaker 4: We got Logan Scott FROMV one hundred, Morgan Robinson, very
- 22:08Speaker 4: well known media all over Charleston. So how do they
- 22:12Speaker 4: what's they're responsible? How do they judge them?
- 22:14Speaker 2: So Samantha has created a rubric for them, and so
- 22:17Speaker 2: that's what they do. They kind of go through the
- 22:18Speaker 2: rubric and then they hash it out among themselves.
- 22:21Speaker 10: That's a fancy way Dave of saying there's criteria that
- 22:24Speaker 10: that you know, stage pressing and originality.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Okay, you know with Dave, you got to talk in
- 22:30Speaker 4: small work, Okay, I said it out. Yeah, I like
- 22:36Speaker 4: it all right again we're talking about that means something different. Okay,
- 22:38Speaker 4: we're talking to Naomi Base from the West Side Neighborhood Association,
- 22:41Speaker 4: Rob Real from ninety six one k WS. The Dad
- 22:44Speaker 4: Joe Competition is coming up by next Saturday night Capital Theater,
- 22:48Speaker 4: and talk about the West Side Neighborhood Association. This is
- 22:50Speaker 4: what you're here for. And you guys do things throughout
- 22:52Speaker 4: the year, you and Samantha and the entire organization, but
- 22:54Speaker 4: talk about the talk about what you did.
- 22:56Speaker 2: So the westid Neighborhood Association celebrating thirty years. Thirty years
- 23:00Speaker 2: and it's always been based around volunteers and the neighbors,
- 23:03Speaker 2: and so we've really centered ourselves around that. We organize
- 23:06Speaker 2: cleanups and do beautification projects and just how to build community,
- 23:11Speaker 2: get people to get to know each other. And it's
- 23:13Speaker 2: a great time and we try to sprinkle in silliness
- 23:15Speaker 2: wherever we can. You know, we were on the show
- 23:18Speaker 2: promoting our Magic on Magic Island event, which is a
- 23:21Speaker 2: meet cute cleanup and so we'll Paul we have something
- 23:23Speaker 2: like that again this year and we just try to
- 23:25Speaker 2: have fun.
- 23:25Speaker 4: When I interviewed you guys for that, I'm going to
- 23:30Speaker 4: say after next, well what is today? Next? Today is
- 23:34Speaker 4: the tenth So yeah, seven days from today will be
- 23:37Speaker 4: my thirty eighth year in radio. Okay, I've very rarely
- 23:41Speaker 4: ever gotten nervous. But when we started talking about this
- 23:45Speaker 4: event that you guys did, I was like, what exactly
- 23:48Speaker 4: is this?
- 23:49Speaker 2: Yeah, we had to explain what a meet cute was
- 23:51Speaker 2: to do the yeah, and cuffing season.
- 23:53Speaker 4: And cuffing season, Rob, I learned all about what cuffing senes.
- 23:56Speaker 10: Now as much old stuff as you've watched, I would
- 23:59Speaker 10: think you would know a meet cute from you know,
- 24:01Speaker 10: classic thirty screwball comedies and that sort of thing. But yeah,
- 24:05Speaker 10: the cuffing season, that's that came a little after our.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Time, okay, which well I learned it. I learned, and
- 24:10Speaker 4: I learned what cuffing season wasn't it? And then I
- 24:13Speaker 4: walked up to HR, which I have a normal seat anyway,
- 24:16Speaker 4: I just walked in and said, well, should I come
- 24:17Speaker 4: back tomorrow or you need somebody to watch the vans
- 24:20Speaker 4: here at ten o'clock on Tuesdays, we have a standing appointment. Yeah,
- 24:23Speaker 4: we just kind of go up to Ashley's office every day.
- 24:26Speaker 4: What do you got this week? All right, all right,
- 24:28Speaker 4: so we had a text here, what exactly is a
- 24:30Speaker 4: dad joke? The term hasn't been around very long, Rob,
- 24:33Speaker 4: you want to take that. A great example would be
- 24:36Speaker 4: what's a pirate's favorite letter?
- 24:38Speaker 11: Are?
- 24:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it's so that sort of things? Cornball, yes, clean,
- 24:43Speaker 4: mostly can Yeah, absolutely that your dad would tell Yeah,
- 24:49Speaker 4: and hey Dad, I'm hungry, Hey hungry, I'm dad.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:53Speaker 10: I think that may be the that may be the prototypical,
- 24:56Speaker 10: the proverbial dad joke.
- 24:58Speaker 4: And we aim to.
- 24:58Speaker 10: Keep this one family friend. Yes, so you know, bring
- 25:02Speaker 10: the youngsters. We're going to have ourselves a good time.
- 25:05Speaker 10: It's it's safe for everybody. And before the thought gets
- 25:09Speaker 10: away from me, I do want to give a special
- 25:12Speaker 10: extra bit of love to Sam because she is so effervescent,
- 25:17Speaker 10: She's so bubbly and brings so much fun to these
- 25:20Speaker 10: sorts of things. She's working her muggle job today, which
- 25:22Speaker 10: is why she wasn't able to be here with us.
- 25:24Speaker 10: She was just recognized by the y w c A
- 25:28Speaker 10: for being being a big deal around here in their lunch.
- 25:32Speaker 2: And before ye she was nominated and awarded the Woman
- 25:36Speaker 2: to Watch and I told her, I was like, I
- 25:39Speaker 2: got my eyes on you.
- 25:40Speaker 4: Yeah, you probably should.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I should, especially during cuffing season.
- 25:46Speaker 10: Yep, ten two o'clock or ten o'clock on Tuesday, right
- 25:50Speaker 10: on time.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:50Speaker 4: But but but you and Samantha do a great job
- 25:52Speaker 4: in the entire organization here and again we talk about
- 25:55Speaker 4: the events that you do, but the events and the
- 25:58Speaker 4: fundraisers whatever make the other things that you do, uh,
- 26:01Speaker 4: in the in the community. So so talk about that.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Yeah. So all the money that we're raising from this
- 26:07Speaker 2: will actually it's slated to go towards an oral history
- 26:11Speaker 2: project that we're working on. Since we're celebrating thirty years,
- 26:15Speaker 2: we're gonna start interviewing folks on the West Side that
- 26:19Speaker 2: have been doing good work over the years. And so
- 26:21Speaker 2: we're going to do some oral history because we've got
- 26:23Speaker 2: some folks that have been you know, Tom Tolliver, he's
- 26:26Speaker 2: ninety three years old, he's been doing community gardens were
- 26:28Speaker 2: like fifty years, you know.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Mister Tolliver. I think it's been on the show.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, And so like we want to talk to
- 26:33Speaker 2: them and capture this on video and then you know,
- 26:36Speaker 2: do a fun campaign with that, but then also have
- 26:38Speaker 2: a long form video from that at the end.
- 26:40Speaker 4: And it always amazes me, you know me, in the
- 26:43Speaker 4: time that I have done this show, the way that
- 26:45Speaker 4: the West Side folks come together for these things, whether
- 26:49Speaker 4: it's something like this or like you said, the community
- 26:51Speaker 4: gardens or so on and so forth. And there's a
- 26:54Speaker 4: pride in the West Side of Charleston. I mean there
- 26:58Speaker 4: really really is, and from people that will tell me,
- 27:01Speaker 4: like you know, you say, it's in a lot of
- 27:04Speaker 4: and Robs lived a lot of places because you've been
- 27:05Speaker 4: fired a lot. Yeah, so so there. So you have
- 27:09Speaker 4: these townspeople go in, they say, well where are you from,
- 27:11Speaker 4: and you'll say, well, you know, Charleston or South Charleston,
- 27:13Speaker 4: whatever the case may be. I've noticed that when in Charleston,
- 27:15Speaker 4: a lot of people will say west Side Charleston. They
- 27:18Speaker 4: don't necessarily say not everybody says with all due respecting
- 27:20Speaker 4: the neighbors, they don't always say South Hills or they
- 27:23Speaker 4: don't always say East End. But with Western people, they
- 27:26Speaker 4: they they're proud of that Charleston West End.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Absolutely. We recently I led a resident engagement session. So
- 27:34Speaker 2: as part of the work that we do, we get
- 27:35Speaker 2: with together with other West Side orgs and we talk
- 27:37Speaker 2: about how can we together promote the west Side, and
- 27:41Speaker 2: so we were doing this resident engagement thing, and we
- 27:43Speaker 2: were talking about the through lines, like what are some
- 27:45Speaker 2: of the key words and themes that you think about
- 27:47Speaker 2: when and like that's what you said, like hope and
- 27:50Speaker 2: pride and like coming together. Those were all the through
- 27:54Speaker 2: lines that we kept coming up. So our next steps
- 27:57Speaker 2: will be how can we create a campaign from that
- 28:00Speaker 2: so that people really know, like the West Side is
- 28:02Speaker 2: a place where you can be and you can know
- 28:03Speaker 2: your neighbors and you can take pride in your community.
- 28:06Speaker 10: And I think my favorite part about that is knowing
- 28:07Speaker 10: that the West Side has a fascinating and somewhat complicated history.
- 28:13Speaker 10: If you walk around down the folks know I walk
- 28:15Speaker 10: about there are plenty of the historical markers for things
- 28:20Speaker 10: that have gone on in the West Side over the
- 28:22Speaker 10: past hundred and fifty years. There's a lot to learn
- 28:25Speaker 10: and to have that kind of that kind of cohesive
- 28:29Speaker 10: togetherness for the west Side.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Is there is a lot of history there. Yeah, there's
- 28:34Speaker 4: a lot to learn on the West Side, all right,
- 28:36Speaker 4: And you can learn a lot of dad jokes and
- 28:38Speaker 4: you can practice up Now, when would be the last
- 28:41Speaker 4: moment for somebody to say I want to enter this competition.
- 28:45Speaker 2: We will take you up until I believe Monday or Tuesday.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Of next okay, and how do people enter?
- 28:51Speaker 2: You can go to Westside Neighbor dot org or you
- 28:53Speaker 2: can find us on the socials, Facebook and Instagram and
- 28:55Speaker 2: follow the links from there.
- 28:57Speaker 4: And they should plan to their their performance to be
- 29:00Speaker 4: approximately how long. I remember, I'll say what's the limit.
- 29:03Speaker 4: I'll say that.
- 29:04Speaker 2: They should probably have all together about ten to fifteen
- 29:07Speaker 2: minutes worth of jokes.
- 29:08Speaker 4: And it doesn't have to be we allow props, right,
- 29:11Speaker 4: and it doesn't necessarily have to be like like a
- 29:13Speaker 4: classic stand up comedy routine. From what I understand, Rob,
- 29:16Speaker 4: I mean, you can just go out and just say
- 29:18Speaker 4: if you want to cut, and you can use note
- 29:20Speaker 4: books and you can use note.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Car on your arm.
- 29:22Speaker 4: I don't know, you can write on somebody else's arm
- 29:24Speaker 4: if you want to. Bun back to the mingle again.
- 29:26Speaker 4: But so you you don't have to you don't have
- 29:29Speaker 4: to look like like Jerry Seinfeld up there. I mean,
- 29:32Speaker 4: you can come out and just do joke after joke
- 29:34Speaker 4: after joke.
- 29:34Speaker 10: You could be long form storyteller Allah Jerry Seinfeld, Nate Berghatsi,
- 29:39Speaker 10: you could be just a rapid fire one liner like
- 29:42Speaker 10: Henny Youngman get all the way to Geechee guy. However,
- 29:45Speaker 10: you tell your dad jokes.
- 29:46Speaker 4: We're going to make it work, all right, as the

- 38:20Speaker 4: some text here, tex says Dave. My friends are saying,
- 38:23Speaker 4: now I didn't vote for Trump until I show them
- 38:26Speaker 4: all the texts I received from them, says a text.
- 38:30Speaker 4: I appreciate the text. I will say this for my
- 38:32Speaker 4: friends that are hardcore Trumps supporters, I have I have
- 38:39Speaker 4: not experienced that now not and I appreciate the text.
- 38:43Speaker 4: Not saying that the Texters, you know, lyne are incorrect.
- 38:46Speaker 4: They know what they know I'm just saying that in
- 38:48Speaker 4: my antidotal here, I have not seen that. I have
- 38:51Speaker 4: had a lot of texts of the show about it, though,
- 38:54Speaker 4: and Trump's support is eroding in many areas. The interesting thing,
- 39:00Speaker 4: and I saw on the show, I'm sorry, I'm going
- 39:05Speaker 4: on the show, saw some polling, I should say, over
- 39:07Speaker 4: the weekend that said that the majority of people Republicans, Democrats, independence,
- 39:14Speaker 4: they be one of the few really favorable things that
- 39:18Speaker 4: President Trump has as far as polling goes right now
- 39:24Speaker 4: is the is the way he's handled the border. Now,
- 39:27Speaker 4: hold up, don't run off the road. When I say
- 39:29Speaker 4: handling the border, what I mean by I'm not talking
- 39:31Speaker 4: about ice. I'm talking about handling the closing of the border.
- 39:35Speaker 4: The majority of Republicans, Democrats, and independents do support what
- 39:40Speaker 4: President Trump has done at the border. According to National Pope. Now,
- 39:44Speaker 4: the economy and his handling of the economy and the
- 39:47Speaker 4: Ice situation seems to be the Achilles heel right now
- 39:52Speaker 4: for the President. Texas says, going along with that, my
- 39:58Speaker 4: church used to praise Trump, now not so much. Starting
- 40:02Speaker 4: to part ways. Well, I don't get into religious discussions
- 40:06Speaker 4: with people, but I would say that if you're well,
- 40:09Speaker 4: I probably shouldn't say that. I'm just going to say
- 40:11Speaker 4: that if your church is promoting any politician, you might
- 40:17Speaker 4: want to look for a different church. I'm just saying
- 40:19Speaker 4: that's that's personal opinion on me. I'm I'm kind of
- 40:23Speaker 4: a big believer in that. I talked to a lot
- 40:24Speaker 4: of my pastoral friends debts. There's no place for that
- 40:29Speaker 4: in the pulpit in my opinion. Texas Davis discussing that
- 40:34Speaker 4: video companies a Department of War putting up videos of
- 40:38Speaker 4: this Iron conflict did have to have to have to
- 40:43Speaker 4: have a little bit more context on that, I guess.
- 40:45Speaker 4: But Dave Iland show in five eighty Live is brought
- 40:47Speaker 4: to you in part by Morgan to Morgan. If you're injured,
- 40:49Speaker 4: hired Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. Texas, Dave,
- 40:53Speaker 4: I miss Biden, and I'm an independent voter. Well, you
- 40:57Speaker 4: may be the only one appreciate the text though. On
- 41:02Speaker 4: the Military Texas Day, why are military leaders telling soldiers
- 41:05Speaker 4: that this war with Iran his armorgeddon, this should never
- 41:08Speaker 4: happen again. I have I've seen a lot of hyperbole
- 41:11Speaker 4: about this, but I've not seen those words specifically. All right,
- 41:17Speaker 4: So I'm going to get into something here and this
- 41:20Speaker 4: is from the old man yells at Cloud's department, and
- 41:25Speaker 4: that would be me. And I'm gonna tell you about
- 41:27Speaker 4: something that happened yesterday. Set the stage with me. Just
- 41:33Speaker 4: I just got in from work yesterday afternoon, early evening.
- 41:37Speaker 4: Wife was off work, getting getting ready for dinner. And
- 41:42Speaker 4: let me just kind of preface this by saying, I
- 41:45Speaker 4: am in no way, no way, whatsoever, trying to discourage
- 41:52Speaker 4: anyone from making a living. I appreciate the hustle, abs,
- 41:55Speaker 4: that's my motto, always be selling. I appreciate that. So yesterday,
- 42:00Speaker 4: late afternoon, almost early, my wife is walking through the
- 42:03Speaker 4: living room and we have the front door open because
- 42:05Speaker 4: it's a very nice evening, and so we got the
- 42:09Speaker 4: door open and she just happened to be walking through
- 42:12Speaker 4: the living room and she says to me, Okay, someone's
- 42:15Speaker 4: walking up the driveway. And let me just say, because
- 42:19Speaker 4: I genuinely don't like people at my house, I simply
- 42:23Speaker 4: stepped out of the porch and met the person. And
- 42:27Speaker 4: this person just explained to me that they were in
- 42:31Speaker 4: the neighborhood and made up the name of a neighbor
- 42:36Speaker 4: that we don't have and telling me that hey, we're
- 42:42Speaker 4: just doing some work for her. Okay, well that's that
- 42:46Speaker 4: name is not any of my neighbors. But okay, and
- 42:50Speaker 4: it doesn't really matter. Well okay, I mean i'll tell you,
- 42:53Speaker 4: I'll tell you it was. I'm not going to mention
- 42:55Speaker 4: the name because it's not necessarily the company's fault. It
- 42:59Speaker 4: was an internet. So the person explains to me that
- 43:05Speaker 4: the company is expanding and just says, hey, I'd like
- 43:10Speaker 4: to talk to you about this, and I just cut
- 43:13Speaker 4: him off because I wasn't interested. And if I've always
- 43:20Speaker 4: been a believer that if someone is is or is
- 43:23Speaker 4: not interested, you know, I cut to the chase. If
- 43:25Speaker 4: somebody you know, says to me, hey, would you like
- 43:28Speaker 4: if I'm not interested, I'll just say no, save you time.
- 43:30Speaker 4: I'm not interested. All right. So this person explains me, Hey,
- 43:35Speaker 4: my company, we're in the neighborhood. We're over working at
- 43:38Speaker 4: so and so's house again a neighbor that doesn't exist, uh,
- 43:41Speaker 4: and would like to talk to me. And I explained
- 43:44Speaker 4: to him that we're perfectly happy with our current provider.
- 43:47Speaker 4: And this was a legit guy. Okay, I mean, he
- 43:50Speaker 4: you know, had the uniform odd and the name tag
- 43:52Speaker 4: you know it was. It was a legit person. I
- 43:54Speaker 4: explained to him that we're happy with our current provider
- 43:58Speaker 4: and I'm not interested. He then begins to talk to
- 44:03Speaker 4: me and ask me about the internet speeds that we have,
- 44:05Speaker 4: and again I explain, we're not interested, perfectly happy with
- 44:10Speaker 4: our current provider. I'm not making this up. He then
- 44:14Speaker 4: asked to see my phone, and it wasn't in a
- 44:17Speaker 4: threatening kind of way or anything like that. He just
- 44:20Speaker 4: said he have you got your phone? I will show you.
- 44:22Speaker 4: And I was like, okay. At this point, I'm getting
- 44:23Speaker 4: a little pissed, not gonna lie, all right. I then
- 44:28Speaker 4: point to him that there is a sign at the
- 44:31Speaker 4: top of the hill as you enter into our subdivision
- 44:34Speaker 4: that plainly says no soliciting. Okay, And I'm not really
- 44:39Speaker 4: sure what part of no soliciting that this person didn't understand,
- 44:44Speaker 4: but it's like he just won't stop. And again, I
- 44:49Speaker 4: appreciate the hustle, I really really do, but I don't
- 44:55Speaker 4: do well when people when I tell you I'm not interested,
- 44:58Speaker 4: I'm not interested, and then you keep going and asked
- 45:03Speaker 4: to see my phone because uh, you're in it starts
- 45:06Speaker 4: asking me all these questions, and when I said, okay,
- 45:10Speaker 4: very nice and the conversation was good. Okay, Well like
- 45:14Speaker 4: I was, you know, neither one of us was threatening
- 45:16Speaker 4: each other or anything like that. I said, when you
- 45:19Speaker 4: came to the neighborhood, there's a giant sign this says
- 45:22Speaker 4: no soliciting. That means what you're doing now, sir, And
- 45:32Speaker 4: so I kind of took away. Even if I were
- 45:35Speaker 4: interested in what this person was selling and changing companies,
- 45:41Speaker 4: I wouldn't go with that company. And again it's nothing
- 45:44Speaker 4: personal against the guy just trying to make a living.
- 45:48Speaker 4: But if I could give you a little advice from
- 45:51Speaker 4: somebody who's done a lot of sales in my life,
- 45:53Speaker 4: not door to door, but I have done a lot
- 45:55Speaker 4: of sales and promotions, saying, maybe not be so pushed
- 46:00Speaker 4: next time, because if I were interested in you just
- 46:04Speaker 4: lost me with the whole thing after I told you
- 46:07Speaker 4: I'm not interested, and you just continue to stand there
- 46:09Speaker 4: on my front lawn and you ignore a signed this
- 46:11Speaker 4: as no. So just saying Dave Iland show on five

- 50:46Speaker 4: I said, sure, call you tomorrow. And that was twenty
- 50:49Speaker 4: twenty three.
- 50:50Speaker 11: So.
- 50:52Speaker 15: Not bad.
