- 0:22Hi everybody. Welcome to the Impact Ready
- 0:23podcast. I'm so glad you're here.
- 0:26This episode is a conversation that is going to center around
- 0:31this idea of taking up space in our lives.
- 0:34And that can actually mean a lot of different things.
- 0:37But in general, it means being the most authentic version of
- 0:41yourself and letting your energy be big.
- 0:45And for the purpose of this conversation, it also means
- 0:47resisting the urge to shrink in whatever way you feel the urge
- 0:53to make yourself smaller, whether it's your personality or
- 0:57your energy or your leadership, your sense of humor, your
- 1:02bravery or your ideas. It's about letting all of that
- 1:07take up space. And you think I would be having
- 1:11this conversation with mostly women in my day-to-day coaching
- 1:16clients. But the reality is I'm having
- 1:18this conversation with everyone, people from all walks of life,
- 1:23all different careers, different backgrounds, different ages.
- 1:28It seems to be a bit of a universal feeling and I think
- 1:32it's worth addressing. There's a lot of reasons why we
- 1:37might make ourselves smaller. I don't know if you can remember
- 1:41the first time that you somehow found yourself shrinking in a
- 1:47situation. Maybe it's the first time you
- 1:50knew the answer to a question in a classroom and you didn't raise
- 1:53your hand. Maybe it was a time where you
- 1:56were in a group of friends and you wanted to say something, but
- 2:00you didn't because you knew it wasn't going to be cool or
- 2:03wasn't going to be accepted. Maybe it's in a romantic
- 2:07relationship where you had a need or you didn't like
- 2:11something that was happening and you kept your mouth shut because
- 2:15you didn't want to make waves or cause a conflict of some kind.
- 2:21Maybe it was at work when you had a really good idea and you
- 2:25wanted to put it out there and take a risk and take a leap and
- 2:29you didn't because you felt like you couldn't.
- 2:33You didn't have the ability to bring it to life.
- 2:36You felt like it was too big of a risk, that it was going to
- 2:38cause too much disruption. All of those situations are
- 2:43circumstances where we are playing small, where we're
- 2:47hiding, making ourselves shrink a little bit.
- 2:50Sometimes it's an energetic thing.
- 2:53Sometimes we just don't want to be as happy as we feel or as
- 2:58excited as we feel or passionate because it's not acceptable or
- 3:04it's not cool or it's sort of looked down on within your group
- 3:08or your community or your family.
- 3:11All of these situations happen on the daily.
- 3:14I talk about it with my coaching clients.
- 3:16I've been in these situations many times myself.
- 3:20I can remember what it was like with groups of friends when I
- 3:24was in high school or middle school, even in college where I
- 3:28wasn't who I really wanted to be.
- 3:32I shrunk down. I made myself smaller to fit
- 3:36into something that I thought was cool or I thought was a
- 3:39worthy cause. Ultimately, though, we're going
- 3:43to talk about what that does to us and why it doesn't serve
- 3:47anybody in the long term. There's a lot of reasons why we
- 3:52might make ourselves smaller. Sometimes it's because we want
- 3:55to fit in. Like I was saying, we we don't
- 3:57want to be different from the people around us, especially
- 4:01when we're younger. And so we create these patterns
- 4:04of behavior and thinking and we end up showing up in ways that
- 4:08are smaller than who we are, ways that are contained and
- 4:12controlled and predictable. But here's the thing, team,
- 4:16something that I've told myself many times, middle school is
- 4:18long over and many of us need to let that sentiment go.
- 4:22It's OK to be who we are. It's OK to be that person
- 4:26proudly, to take up the space that we deserve and that we
- 4:30require to be able to share our guests with the world because
- 4:35you know it. We talk about it on this podcast
- 4:37all the time. You have unique gifts that we
- 4:41need. The world needs your positive
- 4:44impact. We can let go of that old
- 4:47teenage mentality that it's cool to not care.
- 4:51You remember that? You know that feeling.
- 4:53It couldn't be further from the truth.
- 4:55It's OK to be excited about your life, and in fact, it's a lot
- 5:00more fun when you are. Life is bigger and brighter and
- 5:04more beautiful. When you.
- 5:05Feel the spectrum of emotions and express them outwardly.
- 5:10When you can be the biggest version of yourself and stand in
- 5:14your power proudly, that is what makes an exciting, joyful life.
- 5:20Another reason we make ourselves small is because we've let other
- 5:24people influence how much space we take up.
- 5:28Some of that stuff can be really old.
- 5:30It can be from parenting or childhood friendships with
- 5:34teachers or coaches, maybe the kids in the neighborhood.
- 5:37Whatever the circumstance, whoever the person, whatever the
- 5:41relationship, I'm not saying that that didn't hurt or wasn't
- 5:46real or what you felt isn't valid.
- 5:49What I am saying is that now is now and the reality is that you
- 5:54are a whole capable, resilient person.
- 5:59We can't let the stories from the past be dictating the way
- 6:02that we show up now. I always think to myself, God,
- 6:07if I let my teenage stories and perspectives rule my life, I'd
- 6:14be in a world of trouble team. I can't have my 15 year old self
- 6:20drive the car anymore. In terms of my thoughts and my
- 6:23beliefs in the way that I show up.
- 6:26I need my wiser, more experienced, more self accepting
- 6:3144 year old version of myself to stand here now and take up the
- 6:36space that is rightfully mine and that will actually serve the
- 6:40world in a much more impactful way.
- 6:44I had a coaching client. He's actually a pretty big dude.
- 6:48He's 63, ex football player and one of the things that we've
- 6:52worked on so much is having him practicing being bigger.
- 6:59Over the years he's shrunk himself down not just because of
- 7:03his physical size but also because he always felt like he
- 7:07he had to be controlled and stoic.
- 7:10I think partly because he was so big, he didn't want to be overly
- 7:14emotional or overly excited or too passionate because it was
- 7:18intimidating to people. And so he'd gotten himself into
- 7:21patterns of saying yes to things that he didn't really want to
- 7:26say yes to and not showing emotion when he really felt like
- 7:30he needed to. And the result is that he was
- 7:34feeling a lot of resentment and frustration that was bottled up
- 7:38inside. And our message all throughout
- 7:41coaching, the conversation we would consistently reinforce is
- 7:45be bigger. Take up the space you deserve.
- 7:48Make yourself seen and known. It was really challenging for
- 7:53him in the beginning, honestly. He had in his mind that he was
- 7:56already a big guy, so he really shouldn't be any louder or more
- 8:00assertive because that would just be overbearing.
- 8:03But ultimately, he started to understand a few distinctions.
- 8:07You can take up space and have the big energy you need without
- 8:11being overpowering or overbearing.
- 8:14You can show emotion and say how you feel without it being too
- 8:18much for people. And that brings me to my last
- 8:22point. We are so often afraid that we
- 8:27are too much, that our emotions and our feelings and our needs
- 8:32are too much for other people to be able to manage.
- 8:35And this is especially true for all of you out there who are
- 8:39caregivers or nurturers. It's very easy for you to put
- 8:43your needs second. But I strongly feel like the
- 8:47very thing that we think will help minimize our disruption to
- 8:51other people is the thing that actually keeps us from being
- 8:54helpful to other people. That keeps us from building
- 8:58connection with other people, that helps us express ideas and
- 9:03emotions to other people. It's this idea of making
- 9:07ourselves small, and I think that making yourself small
- 9:11actually suppresses your light that you put out into the world.
- 9:14And in fact, it is a disservice to ourselves and to our families
- 9:20and our kids and our colleagues. We think that shrinking
- 9:25ourselves down and taking up less space will be easier for
- 9:28the world. But in fact, it's stealing our
- 9:30impact, something that the world needs so, so badly.
- 9:34You were never meant to shrink. You were never meant to make
- 9:38yourself small to fit into someone else's picture of you.
- 9:43You were never meant to be a version of yourself that fits
- 9:45into a box that someone else created for you.
- 9:50You are meant to be your authentic self.
- 9:54So my question to you this week, the rest of this week, is where
- 9:59in your life are you playing small right now?
- 10:04Where are you hiding? Where are you not raising your
- 10:07hand? Where are you staying quiet when
- 10:11you know that you need to be a little bit louder?
- 10:14Ask yourself those questions and see what comes up for you.
- 10:19It happens to all of us. It's such a human thing, and
- 10:21it's nothing to be ashamed about or feel bad that you haven't
- 10:26corrected yet. It's just a matter of practicing
- 10:30being more you, being more true to yourself over a period of
- 10:34time. And the first step is
- 10:36understanding where you hide, where you play small, where you
- 10:39shrink down. I'm guilty of it just like
- 10:42everybody else, and it just starts with awareness.
- 10:46So I hope you can look at that and I hope that this episode
- 10:49serves you and spurs on some thoughts so that we can feel the
- 10:53power of those unique gifts that you bring.
- 10:56I appreciate you being here and listening.
